Hi Everyone Well, welcome back to what is been a really soggy start to 2011 for our area. After seeing the flooding events of the last week both south and north of the Sunshine Coast – it would seem that a soggy start is getting off lightly. In an area such as ours where community spirit runs high there have been many individuals and groups within our community who are keen to help assist the recovery efforts in flood affected areas. Already collections have been undertaken by Rotary and raffles are underway by local businesses, and collections are being organised for furniture and other household items, which we have included stories about in this edition. We have also included a story by Pastor Brendan Edwards about his experience on the week-end volunteering to assist in the cleanup in Brisbane on page 24. While our area did not suffer
the devastating effects of water inundation throughout homes and businesses, the area definitely saw plenty of localised flooding in our creeks, across roads, in parks, and across plenty of farming land. Thanks to the local photographers who captured what was happening in their properties, streets, and towns, we have been able to include some of the dramatic images in this edition. I am sure that there will be many more fundraising initiatives organised by individuals, groups and local business in the coming weeks and GCNews is keen to ensure that we promote all of them. So if you are planning something and would like to let the rest of the community know, please email us on editorial@gcnews. com.au Regards,

At 4.00am most mornings, Brisbane’s Rocklea Markets is typically abuzz with the state's fruit and vegetable sales, but last Thursday morning, it was five to six metres under and rising. The state’s largest fresh fruit and vegetable market closed its gates last Wednesday after flood waters rose, leaving 58 fruit and veg stall owners and agents no where to store or sell produce from. Following emergency negotiations late last week, Gowinta Farms at Beerwah has stepped in to act as a storage and distribution centre, with produce agent Paul Alroe from Don Alroe & Sons temporarily moving his operation to Gowinta.

The Brisbane Markets at Rocklea goes under This ensures that not only do farmers have a place to send fresh produce, but retailers can also continue receiving shipments of fresh fruit and veggies. Gowinta Farms has eight cold rooms with the capacity to hold over 100 pallets of fresh produce and over 1,000 sq metres of dry storage. Gowinta marketing manager James Ashby said it was a win-win situation for all. "These temporary arrangements will ensure there is a steady flow of fruit and veg to our region and beyond, and it will all be facilitated out of Beerwah," Mr Ashby said. Don Alroe & Sons is an Agent for growers and will only sell to supermarkets, independent grocery stores, gruit shops and fruit amd vegetable wholesalers in bulk amounts but is not able to sell to the general public.

No rest for local SES volunteers Across the state, they’ve been hard at work for days upon days, saving life and property from the unrelenting fury of mother nature, and even though our region has been spared the worst of it, our local SES volunteers have seen their fair share of difficult times in the past few weeks. As local river levels peaked last week, our local SES volunteers responded to many calls for assistance, particularly from elderly residents, assisting them with flood damage and the impact of the fast flowing flood waters. SES team member Dave Erbacher said the crew’s busiest day was last Tuesday, when
they responded to 20 jobs in the Glasshouse area between 8.00am - 11.00pm. “We were kept busy all day, helping people deal with the effects of the rising flood waters and covering leaking roofs,” Dave said. He said local crews were stretched to the limit, with only 15 of the 29 members available to help out, as a number of volunteers themselves stuck outside the region. Group leader Robert Barry said it was a timely reminder to consider volunteering for the SES. “We are always on the lookout for new members, young or old,” he said. The Glass House Mountains SES meets on the first and third Thursday of the month at 7.00pm at their training facility on Beerwah Parade, opposite the Beerwah RSL. For more information about becoming a SES volunteer, contact Robert on 0427 894 182 or Dave on 5496 9637.

Floods claim a victim in local roads
While most of us have been spared the full extent of mother nature’s flooding fury, local roads have not fared as well. Last week, a 100m section of Steve Irwin Way, between Nursery Road and Moffat Road, was reduced to one lane from Thursday as Main Roads attended to a badly damaged section of the road. Works were expected to continue over the weekend and be completed by Tuesday, weather permitting. A Department of Transport and Main Road spokesperson said over the coming weeks the department will complete normal maintenance activities on Steve Irwin Way to repair damage at other locations. Visit www.139140.qld.gov.au for more information about Sunshine Coast traffic conditions.

In the aftermath of the state’s flooding crises, as the clean up continues, our local Glasshouse community has shown the true extent of their generous nature by supporting local fundraising efforts and donating mountains of household goods including clothes, furniture and other items. A number of local businesses have come on board, raffling donated prizes. Some are raffling off a bear or porcelain doll from a local resident’s (who wishes to remain anonymous) award winning collection, while others are raffling other prizes also generously donated. Those businesses supporting the flood appeal include (but are not limited to) the local IGA supermarkets in Beerwah, Glass House

Glasshouse community rallies behind flood victims
In the past our community group has raised funds for the bush fire brigade in our local area following the Glasshouse-Beerburrum fires, and more recently the Victorian bushfire appeal. Most of us have no concept of what it would be like to lose all personal effects, our business or livelihood, precious mementos and even the clothes we wear. We would now encourage the community to come together and support us to raise funds for those who have suffered trauma
and loss in these terrible floods. A fundraising plant sale will be held on January 22 at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre (opp the post office). The focus of the sale will be to launch our new Richmond Birdwing Butterfly brochure, and to encourage everyone to plant a vine to bring back this beautiful and rare species to the Sunshine Coast. Other local plants will also be for sale for $1.00. Weather permitting, a sausage sizzle will be held throughout the morning, or alternatively morning tea will be provided. Please come along and purchase a plant for the flood victims. Absolutely all proceeds from food or plant sales will go to the flood appeal. Enquiries to Gwen 5493 0029 or Yvonne 5438 7118.
Local Rotary club’s impressive fundraising efforts Contributed by George MacKenzie, president On Wednesday, January 5, under the supervision of Trevor Taylor, (who is Rotary’s District 9600 Flood Disaster Organiser), Trevor, George MacKenzie and Sue Brumpton held a Flood Disaster Relief fundraiser.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people and businesses of Beerwah for their generosity. This generosity was similar to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal when people were amazing with their donations. It is great to see how Australian people pull together in a time of crisis. In just two and a quarter hours we raised $1072.00, and after that another $300.00 was donated. This was on top of the $500.00 that the Rotary Club of Glass House Mountains donated to the appeal. This was an amazing response, and there are some businesses who are still collecting for Rotary, namely Curves and Eden in Glasshouse. If you wish to donate to our Rotary Flood Relief appeal, please either drop in to these businesses or phone Trevor on 0427 949 518. All Rotary Clubs in District 9600 have been activated to assist in all flood affected areas and 100 per cent of money raised will go to the people most in need. Once again, many thanks for the generosity of the people of Beerwah.

Aussie World hosts Christmas celebrations for deserving families For the eighth year in a row, Aussie World continued a long running Christmas tradition of hosting Christmas Eve lunch for hundreds of Salvation Army families from across the Sunshine Coast. Just as Santa was about to leave his cold home to head towards the warmer climate of the Sunshine Coast, Aussie World threw open the front doors to the Salvation Army and welcomed hundreds of less fortunate families to share in some Christmas cheer, unlimited rides and a hot lunch. Salvation Army family case worker Katrina Steel said the day increases the self esteem of the parents as they are able to relax and have fun with their children. “Christmas Eve at Aussie World raises the spirits and it gives our families something wonderful

Another avenue to resolve water complaints is now available, in the form of the Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland (EWOQ). Energy and Water Ombudsman Barry Adams said residents and small businesses serviced by Allconnex Water, Queensland Urban Utilities and Unitywater will now have another avenue to resolve their water and wastewater disputes. Mr Adams said EWOQ is funded by scheme participants so it is in the water entities’ best interest to resolve complaints quickly and fairly the first time, without the need for investigation by EWOQ. EWOQ can assist all residential water customers and small businesses whose consumption is less than 100 kilolitres per year, with issues such as bills, credit, customer service, restricted supply, customer connections, and sewerage blockages and spills, but it can't investigate complaints about price, water quality or complaints which originated prior to January 1. As with energy, water customers must give their water entity an opportunity to resolve their complaint first. If they are not satisfied with the outcome people can contact EWOQ on 1800 662 837, email complaints@ewoq.com.au or online at www.ewoq.com.au

Small business operators are being urged to get to know their rights and responsibilities under new laws and procedures that have taken effect from January 1. These include changes to industry codes on fair conduct, the definition of what is a small business employer for unfair dismissal provisions, and the introduction of the paid parental leave scheme. The new Competition and Consumer Act puts in place tougher enforcement powers that apply to all industry codes, including the Franchising Code of Conduct. Changes from January 1 include a new definition of small business employer for the purposes of unfair dismissal laws. A small business employer will no longer be a business with fewer than 15 full-time equivalent employees, but a business with 15 employees based on a simple headcount. The Government’s Paid Parental Leave scheme is also effective as of January 1 – with a sixmonth phase-in period for employers. Eligible working parents of babies born or adopted from January 1 will receive 18 weeks Parental Leave Pay at the National Minimum Wage – currently $570.00 week before tax. Further information is on the changes to the unfair dismissal laws is available from www.fairwork.gov.au A summary of recent regulatory changes to the Franchising Code of Conduct can be found on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s website at: www.accc.gov.au More information on the Australian Consumer Law can be found at:http://www.consumerlaw. gov.au/content/Content.aspx?doc=home.htm

Doing Business Be your own boss with James’ Home Services Robert James started washing cars at Caloundra nearly 20 years ago. As his business grew, he saw the potential for home services. Now there are more than 400 franchisees throughout Australia. Regularly washing cars in the hinterland, Robert said he has seen massive growth in the area, and believes it will continue to do so. In fact, he loves the area so much, he lives in Mooloolah with his wife and family. James’ Home Services growth to a national company is due to a solid, proven business system in the market place, where it counts. When you join James’ you get ongoing support from your fulltime business coach, including ongoing training and on going marketing. Every week there is a national advertising campaign on Channel 7’s ‘The Morning Show’, combined with local advertising. What this means to you is you are guaranteed work because of our strong brand awareness in the community. We urgently need house cleaners. Every week our national call centre, situated at head office in Mooloolaba, receives an enormous amount of calls from people wanting their houses cleaned and lawns mowed. Even with the influx of new franchisees joining, we cannot keep up with the demand. If you are keen to be your own boss with Australia’s premier home ]services team call ]Rhonda James on 1800 1james.
Expecting a baby this year?
Then here’s your at-a-glance guide to the new paid parental leave scheme. The paid parental leave scheme began on January 1 and applies to eligible parents of children born or adopted on or after this date. After January 1, the current Baby Bonus will continue for those who are either not eligible or choose not to receive the paid parental leave. Eligible parents will receive up to 18 weeks paid parental leave, paid at the National Minimum Wage (which is currently $570.00 a week before tax). You can elect to take it at any time in the first year after birth and you can take it before, during or after any other employer benefits you might have, such as paid maternity leave, annual leave or long service leave. For twins you will receive the parental leave for the first child and the baby bonus for second and subsequent children. To be eligible you need to be an Australian resident and be the primary carer of your baby. You must also have personally earned less than $150,000 in the previous financial year (your partner’s income won’t be taken into account). Finally, you must meet a ‘work test’. To meet this test, you must have: • been in paid work for at least 10 of the 13 months prior to the birth / adoption of your child, and • worked at least 330 hours in that 10 month period (just over one day per week), and had no more than an eight week unpaid break between working days. A working day is a day on which you worked for at least one hour. ‘Working parents’ include full-time, part-time, seasonal and casual workers, contractors, the self employed, and people who have had multiple employers. For most parents, the payment will be received from the Family Assistance Office (FAO) in fortnightly instalments. From July 1 employers will take over the payment responsibility for their long-term employees and you will receive your parental leave pay in the same way as they pay your wages or salary. If you are not a long-term employee (casual, seasonal, recently commenced) then the Family Assistance Office will continue to make your payments. Irrespective of who makes the payment, you lodge your claim through the FAO, in the same way as other family benefits are claimed. The paid parental leave is taxable income and the FAO will deduct 15 per cent PAYG tax before crediting your bank account each fortnight; if the payment is being made by your employer they will also deduct PAYG tax before paying you. If you return to work, the payments will stop. Alternatively, you and your partner can ‘share’ the paid parental leave, so make sure to talk over the options to assess what is best for you and your family. Health Check
The Wellness Lifestyle
'Wellness' is a word that we are hearing much more frequently these days. With chronic conditions such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes killing more Australians than ever before, we should all be more aware of a wellness approach to healthcare. My idea of wellness care is of moving towards health and wellness, as opposed to running away from sickness and disease. Antibiotics, pain relievers, steroids, vaccines, etc are all valuable resources that help you get away from sickness and disease, but how many of your daily activities are moving you towards health, so these interventions are less frequent? The chiropractic approach to health and wellness hasn't changed since 1895. Your brain and nervous system control every function in your body, from breathing, to immune function and digestion. Misaligned vertebrae, known as subluxations, interfere with the messages in your nerves, and the functions of your body. The chiropractor’s role is to remove the interference from the nervous system (subluxation), allowing the body to move towards normal, healthy function. I am offering a free monthly lecture series at the Beerwah Library covering nutrition, exercise, stress, positive thinking, and more, with the first session on Saturday, February 5, at 11.00am. Space is limited, ring Beerwah Wellness Chiropractic on 5494 0499 to RSVP.
No more excuses...IT IS TIME! 2011 is the time that you phone your podiatrist and get those aches and pains in your feet checked out. Finally! Podiatrists are Bachelor degree qualified foot and ankle specialists that can diagnose any problem associated with your foot and ankle. Common problems that podiatrists deal with every day include arch pain, heel pain, weak or sprained ankles, ball of foot pain, bunions and stress fractures. Podiatrists also specialise in ingrown toenail removal, safely and hygienically. Podiatrists assess the foot growth of children and can diagnose any problems that may occur later in adulthood. Now is the time to bring your children to your podiatrist so that they get properly fitted for the right school shoe for their foot type. Footwear is extremely important in foot health and a poorly fitted shoe may be the problem for many foot complaints. Stepping Out Podiatry is conveniently located at three locations around the Hinterland, in Landsborough, Beerwah and Maleny. Phone 1300 881 082 for an appointment today. What’s your excuse?

SES Dramatic Rescue on Mt Tibrogargan By Dave Erbacher
On Thursday, January 6, during heavy rain, three young Brisbane men decided it would be nice to climb Mt Tibrogargan. They set off at 1.00pm and despite the continuing rain and inadequate footwear, they managed to reach the summit just before dark. When starting to descend they realised that the conditions were very dangerous and called for help. The Glasshouse SES was called out at 7.30pm and was quickly on the mountain but conditions were very slippery and dangerous. While one team continued to the top to meet the young men, others set up series of ropes down the mountain to enable the young men to be lowered down in safety harnesses. The whole rescue was particularly slow due to the weather and the conditions of the mountain. As always, safety was paramount. During the rescue concerned parents arrived. The rescue was completed at 1.00am. While the young men were most appreciative of the efforts of the SES Vertical Rescue Team, they were given a severe dressing down by both the Police and parents. While the rescue was successful in this instance, it never ceases to amaze members the lack common sense of some climbers. The SES Group carried out 10 rescues during 2010, thanks to the team of Jason, Tim, Dave, Fred, Robert B, Ross, Louise, Roger and Darren Mc. Group leader Robert Barry said the rescue was a ridiculous call to attend. “The three individuals were completely unprepared and ignored the conditions and the warnings on the mountain,” he said. “The wet, slippery conditions were very dangerous for our crew, and if there was another shower of rain that evening, I would have called the rescue off until the next morning. “These individuals showed no consideration at all. As it was, we had to replace some of our rescue equipment following the incident,” he said.

The education tax refund - what is it, and are you eligible? The Education Tax Refund (ETR) helps with the cost of educating primary and secondary school children. Eligible parents, carers, legal guardians and independent students are able to get money back on education expenses. These include items like computers, educational software, textbooks and stationery. You may get 50 per cent of the money you sepnt on these items back. If you get Family Tax Benefit (FTB) Part A, you probably are eligible for the ETR. There are also some payments that prevent you from receiving FTB Part A, but which still entitle you to receive the refund. You can also claim the refund if you are an independent student. You can claim the ETR for children in primary and/or secondary school. You need to keep your receipts as you need them to calculate your entitlement and you may need them as proof of purchase. You can claim the ETR even if you do not have to lodge a tax return. Q: What if my child is home-schooled or doing secondary school at TAFE? A: You can still claim the ETR. An eligible child includes students who are home-schooled and those doing a secondary school level of education at an educational institution such as a TAFE, but does not include general TAFE courses. Q: Can I claim for tertiary expenses? A: No. Q: What if my child did not go to school for the whole year? A: Your child will be eligible if they have attended primary or secondary school or received home-schooling for at least one day in a six-month period, commencing July 1 or January 1. Even if they have only attended for part of the year you can still claim for that period. This also applies to independent students. Q: My children’s grandparents paid for their computer. Can the grandparents claim the ETR or can I claim for the computer? A: No. The grandparents are not eligible as they do not receive Family Tax Benefit Part A for the children. You are unable to claim for the computer as you did not incur the expense. You can only claim for items which you have paid for yourself. Q: My children use our home-based business computer. Can I still claim the cost of the computer and associated costs? A: Yes, but only the amount that your business is not claiming as a tax deduction, or is not subject to another tax offset. Q: How do I work out my expenses if my internet connection is bundled with my other utilities — for example phone? A: To calculate your internet expenses, you will need to look at your statement from your internet provider. If you are still unsure, your provider may be able to give you details of your internet charges for each financial year — July 1 to June 30. Q: Can I share the expense for an item between my children? A: Yes. You can share the expense provided all the school children have access to the item that has been purchased. For example, you can share the expense of a computer between all children provided they all have access to it. Q: Do I have to keep all of my eligible education expenses receipts? A: You need to keep records to help you or your tax agent prepare your tax return or claim. You will also need receipts to ensure that you are able to prove your claim for your expenses if you are asked to by the Tax Office. Eligible education expenses must be listed separately on invoices. Q: What if I am not required to lodge an income tax return — can I still claim the refund? A: Yes. If you do not have to lodge a tax return, you will need to use the Education tax refund for individuals 2011 (NAT 72621) form. Your refund will be paid as a cheque or an electronic payment into your nominated bank account. Q: Can I claim the ETR in my tax return if my spouse received the Family Tax Benefit Part A entitlement? A: No. You cannot claim the refund in your tax return if you did not get Family Tax Benefit Part A. The person who receives Family Tax Benefit Part A must be the one who claims the ETR. Q: Will my tax agent tell me I need to claim the ETR? A: Not necessarily. If you know you are eligible for the refund, tell your tax agent so they can claim on your behalf. You will need to show them your receipts for eligible education expenses. For more information about the Education Tax Refund, go to www. australia.gov.au/educationtaxrefund.

Gift giving in January
Christmas may be over for another year but gift giving continues at Glasshouse Country Christian College. The College is donating 40 Dell laptop computers to the underprivileged in Fiji for livelihood projects run by the Fiji Bible College. Neil and Annette Daniels of Beerwah lead mission trips to the college in Fiji and were very excited when the Principal of GCCC first approached them. Mr Daniel said the timing was perfect. “The Fiji Bible College train pastors but they also teach livelihood projects such as IT and they are in desperate need for computers.” The computers are as tough as army boots and after two years of constant use by children of all ages, they are still in good condition. However, without wireless internet compatibility the computers’ usefulness to Glasshouse Country Christian College has come to an end. Mike Curtis, the Principal of GCCC said he was happy that the computers were going to such a worthy cause. The first shipment of laptops should arrive in Fiji late January.

Wet weather
Welcome to 2011
It is shocking to hear of the loss of life and see the massive and widespread damage caused by the unprecedented rainfall that we have had across Queensland. It is encouraging to see the sun is out, but the cleanup will take a very long time. I encourage all Sunshine Coast residents to help out wherever you can and also to take care and make sure that you stay away from swollen creeks and rivers and other dangerous water sources. The flooding has been a shocking and frightening event and it is important that everyone takes care to avoid becoming a New Year statistic.
Australia Day
Well I don’t know about you but the family and I certainly didn’t get to the beach as much as we would have liked over the Christmas / New Year period. It came to us! But a break is a break, and I hope you and yours managed to enjoy some time off over the Christmas and New Year period. I am certainly looking forward to many more exciting challenges in 2011 and wish all Glass House constituents a happy and prosperous year ahead. Remember, if you need to contact me you can call the office on 5435 2013, send an email to glass.house@parliament.qld. gov.au, visit www.andrewpowell.com.au or follow me on facebook.
As we begin the New Year, the first major milestone for the nation is of course Australia Day. I encourage all residents of Fisher to take time this Australia Day to remember the many good things that make our country the envy of many nations around the world. We are a happy, tolerant and accepting nation; we have a relatively high living standard and we live in relative peace. On top of that, the region boasts an enjoyable climate, great beaches and warm friendly residents. We have much to be thankful for. I will this year be hosting the 12th annual Fisher Community Australia Day Awards, to recognise local residents who make significant personal sacrifices to make our community a better place to live. While few volunteers make their contribution with the expectation of receiving recognition, I believe acknowledging these people should be part of our community Australia Day celebrations.
Flood relief
The organisation devoted to the health of our kidneys is regularly urging Australians to have their kidneys checked regularly by the doctor. Kidney Health Australia advises that up to two million Australians may be affected by Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and not even know it. People can lose up to 90 per cent of the use of their kidneys and be unaware they have a problem because of a lack of obvious symptoms. If detected early, it is treatable and its progression can be delayed so patients may never have to revert to dialysis. More information is available at http://www.kidney.org.au/
Pool owners would now be well aware of the changes that came into effect from December 1, 2010 relating to new pool safety standards. The changes are quite significant and will require pool owners to comply with quite strict guidelines involving pool barriers and gates. I have fact sheets in my office that can be mailed to anyone who is interested or wants more information. It is also worth looking at www.qld.gov.au/poolsafety for more information as well. Any pool owner who would like a free CPR sign to attach to their pool fence can contact or visit my office.
Kidney health
It is amazing to see how many community groups have put their hand up to support those people affected by the flood crisis. Our communities really do come together in times of need and I am so honoured to have so many within the Glass House electorate. St Vincent de Paul are one of the main Australia wide charities that are collecting donations of food, blankets and furniture etc and they can be contacted on 1800 173 349. In our own local area, I am aware that the Maleny Branch of the QCWA are supporting flood victims through the Public Rural Crisis Fund, visit website www.qcwa.org.au for more information. Also the Maleny Uniting Church will be collecting donated items weekdays from 9.30am to 3.00pm. The Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal has also been set up to take monetary donations and contact details can be found on website www.qld.gov.au/ floods.

Flood victim appeal kicks off in Caloundra
Free public transport to help with SEQ flood recovery
Caloundra residents can come to the aid of the state’s flood victims this week. I have organised a collection point for the next fortnight for clothing, linen and manchester goods at the Golden Beach Indoor Bowls Club in Burke Street to be distributed amongst flood victims in the southeast. The centre will be open between 10.00am and 2.00pm for goods drop-off while volunteers will continue sorting the donations through until 5.00pm. The donated goods will then be moved by trucks to various distribution points. I would urge residents to back the campaign to help flood victims. Many Coast residents have in the past experienced a similar plight, either here in southeast Queensland or indeed in many other parts of this great state. We are a nation which experiences the most extreme conditions yet we always band together to help each other out. This time we have been relatively lucky being spared the brunt of major flooding but many of our friends in the city and the country are hurting. Some of these people are literally left with nothing but grief and heartache and I’m sure they will appreciate the donations from Sunshine Coast residents. I would like to pay tribute to the band of volunteers who helped organise the flood relief appeal and to Gowinta Farms and Affordable Home and Business Removals for the use of their vehicles.
As part of the State Government’s flood recovery support efforts, public transport in the state’s south east, including Sunshine Coast’s Sunbus services, will be free until Friday, January 21. Premier Bligh said the public transport network is vital to the region's recovery. "Many people don't have cars, and many others have lost them in the floods. I'm also sure there are also numerous residents who've lost their Go Cards. "We want to help as much as possible and making the network free for a week will keep unnecessary cars off the road, help people do some shopping and get around to help others if needed. Minister for Transport Rachel Nolan said the measure was intended to assist the flood recovery, and not a ticket to rubberneck, with non-essential travel not encouraged. Ms Nolan said planned fare rises would still go ahead when fares were reinstituted from Saturday, January 22.

How to lend a hand to the flood appeal Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbot said council is encouraging people to email their details and offers of assistance to customerservice@ sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. He said when the email is processed, customer service officers will send a return email asking ‘Do you have any objections to us providing your details to Volunteering Sunshine Coast who are coordinating coastal volunteers?’, a necessary step for insurance purposes. Cr Abbot said before volunteers are contacted, council will await actual requests from neighbouring regions. “It will take some time for these regions to work out the logistics of relocating people, given they have all allocated respite areas organised and we ask that those registering as volunteers wait until such requests come through,” Cr Abbot said.

Plantation forests closed in south east and central Queensland Forestry Plantations Queensland Pty Ltd would like to advise the closure of its forest plantations due to the prolonged and extreme wet weather being experienced in south east and central Queensland. The affected plantation areas include the Fraser Coast, Elliott River, Mary Valley, Jimna, Yarraman, Pechey- Esk, Passchendaele and Byfield areas. The plantations are closed to all unauthorised access until further notice. Many of the plantation roads and tracks are either still flooded or have been damaged creating a serious risk to people attempting to use them. The current forecast for further heavy rainfall and flash flooding increases the risk to life and property. Forestry Plantations Queensland is appealing to the public to respect this closure so that safe and responsible access to the plantations can be restored to the public and FPQ’s customers as soon as possible. Further information and contact numbers for Forestry Plantations Queensland Pty Ltd offices can found at www.fpq.net.au

With the New Year now full steam ahead we now have a few more things to settle in before long; for example getting the kids to school and settled without too much drama. Coming into a new class, a new teacher, a new school and even a new home can be very unsettling for some children. They could begin to have nightmares, eating changes, behavioral changes, crying more, and all before they even get there. Some children are very shy and timid and this can be very daunting for them, even leaving home can be a challenge. While others are very robust and can simply step into the next phase without any problems. These problems can occur prior to the start of school and during the first few weeks of school. “What I love is that I can help you with using Homeopathy medicines. These are really suited

A Child’s Wonder A precious moment in time has been captured in this engaging photo of a mother and child. A passing butterfly landed briefly while the pair waited for service at an outdoor restaurant in Stockdale Mills, Ontario, Canada. The child’s sense of wonder at this new discovery is evident. A powerful triangle exists between the two faces and the butterfly drawing it all together, along with some very strong diagonals. The photo was processed in photoshop to produce a black and white image with the butterfly left in colour to focus the viewer’s attention on the object of the child’s wonder at this creature and thus drawing him or her in as a participant.
Photo by Graeme This image was taken on a Pentax K10 camera with a 40mm lens set at an exposure of 1/160 at f9. The ISO was set at 400 on a cloudy day with strong diffused light. Google Stockdale Mill, Ontario and click on Images.

Change someone’s life with Mater Healthy Start Olympic Volleyball player Natalie Cook will be joining the line-up of participants in this year’s Mater Healthy Start program to help raise funds for patient care and world-class medical research at Mater. The New Year is a great time to kick start those healthy habits. Queenslanders can do something life changing this month by taking up a healthy habit, or give up a bad one, for one month and ask their friends and family to sponsor them online. “Mater Healthy Start is a great way to start 2011 on the right foot. As a professional athlete I watch what I eat pretty closely. However, after a hard day of training I can’t go past a piece of chocolate with a cup of tea and when I get a chicken salad I have french fries too. I’m NOT going to eat chocolate and french fries for all of January!” Natalie Cook said. “You never know when you or your family will need the services of Mater. You hope you never will but there are 500,000 people each year that do, so I encourage everyone to participate in January just like me.” It can be hard to make a healthy lifestyle change, but the benefits are certainly worth it. Increasing exercise or improving your diet can have huge health benefits including reducing your risk of life-threatening and life-changing illness like cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Participants can feel better this January in three easy steps: • Challenge yourself to take up a healthy activity for the month (for example, walking half an hour each day). • Feel the health benefits of this change. • Ask your friends and family to sponsor you online and raise funds to help Mater provide exceptional care to patients and conduct world-class research into diseases like cancer and diabetes.

Some healthy start initiatives could be walk for 30 minutes a day, cycle 5 km a day, swim 500 metres a day, drink two litres of water a day or eat two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables each day, quit smoking, or give up alcohol or coffee for the month. Mater Foundation Executive Director, Nigel Harris said, “Mater Healthy Start is a fun way to start a healhty lifestyle change and raise funds that will benefit patients and medical research at Mater. So please join me in Mater Healthy Start and support our life-saving work.” Other ambassadors include Network Ten sports presenter Bill McDonald. All his children were born at Mater and he received care for the birth of his latest son in Mater Mother’s Neonatal Critical Care Unit. Maleny Festival of Australian Films The Maleny Film Society is presenting their annual Maleny Festival of Australian Film on Friday and Saturday January 21 and January 22 at the Maleny Community Centre. This year the special Festival guest is Australian writer director Shirley Barrett. The Festival begins on Friday, January 21 at 7.15pm with local Maleny film-maker Robyn Hofmeyr’s 30-minute film ‘The Ration Shed’. This film follows the transformation of the ration shed at the old Cherbourg mission into a museum celebrating the life and struggles of the residents. Following at 8.00pm is a screening of ‘The Tree’. Beautifully shot in Boonah, south-east Queensland, this mystic story centres on a young girl who, after the sudden death of her father, is convinced that he is speaking to her through the leaves of her favourite tree. On Saturday, January 22 the doors open at 2.15pm with the screening of Shirley Barrett’s film ‘South Solitary’. Set in 1927 and wonderfully evocative of time and place, this film lightly charts the misadventures of 35-year-old Meredith, when she goes to a remote island off the Australian coast to care for her uncle, the new head lighthouse keeper. After the matinee screening, Maleny writer Steven Lang will engage Shirley Barrett in conversation for about an hour about her screenplay for ‘South Solitary’, which won the Queensland Premier’s Literary Award for Best Script 2010. Doors to the Centre will reopen at 6.00pm for dinner by Pomodoras Restaurant, then at 7.15 pm the MFS will screen another of Shirley Barrett’s films – ‘Love Serenade’. This version was recently restored by the National Film and Sound Archive, under the guidance of the original production team. Full Festival passes are $35.00 (or $13.00 for each session), and for further information phone Ken Munsie at 5494 2882 or visit www.malenyfilmsociety.info

There’s probably no need to add further comment on the devastation caused by last week’s flooding throughout our country but instead it is helpful to reflect on what we may be able to observe or learn from these things that bring such change upon our society. Having spent the last two days shovelling mud and pulling up wet carpet from units and houses in the West End and Graceville suburbs in Brisbane, I saw first-hand an amazing transformation in those communities. Apart from the obvious mess and smell of wet rubbish, the contrast in people’s attitude was awesome. In areas where next-door neighbours rarely knew each other’s names, perfect strangers were sharing their stories while scraping mud out of a lounge room floor, without even knowing who the owner of the home was. In the home I was working in, we moved about a hundred wheel barrow loads of mud out of a yard and into the park across the road. People worked hard all day, always cheerful and helping with the most unglamorous tasks without hesitation. One girl walked two blocks to find me a bike pump for my wheel barrow, didn’t know the

person who loaned it to her, then she took it all the way back once I had used it. Our street had more free food available than we could eat. We even had cold trifle in eskies handed out by ladies who came in from other areas! Unfortunately I heard a pastor state that this was God’s judgment upon a sinful city. He obviously hasn’t met the people I met yesterday. I think rather, God is using this disaster to reveal His love through people. Relationships are being built and restored through this crisis. My neighbour (from Glasshouse) spent time with his son (in Brisbane) for the first time in years because his house went under the muddy water. Of course this is no comfort to those that have lost loved ones in the flood, but as we continue to get together, pray and serve like this, the healing and comfort will be miraculous for those most affected. It’s as if the people of Brisbane have memorised this passage from Romans 12:9-13. “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” God bless and see you in Church this Sunday!

Glasshouse Country
Bromeliad Society Inc. Contributed by Bob McLean Phone: 0427 606 240
This large and imposing bromeliad is from the sandy soils of costal Brazil. The branched, feathery yellow and red flower spike reaches up to two metres high, forming an excellent feature in sunny, rocky landscapes or near the beach in exposed locations. The plant will cope with some shade, but leaf colour will be inclined to stay green in this location. The most dramatic leaf colour develops when the plants are grown in full sun and are slightly hungry (short of nutrition) in soils similar to the native environment behind sand dunes of the Atlantic coast of Brazil. A number of different cultivars, both unnamed and named, are becoming available, such as red, gold, orange and yellow. These are well worth growing, although there is considerable debate over whether they are true cultivars or just variations caused by light and nutritional differences. Environmental factors have a huge impact on the expression of genetic traits such as colour in this species, and several others like it. Even two plants planted in pots side by side can vary, simply because the potting mix may have not been evenly blended and therefore contain slightly different nutrient levels.
Happy New Year to all and what a start we have had to 2011. I thought that the wet start to summer last December may have even been a bit too much for some bromeliads, with them suffering from wet feet. Now the start to 2011 has tested the plants even more. The next few months will be ideal for diseases to infect your plants, and so a maintenance program should be put in place. The points you need to include are to ensure the plants have good airflow; give your plants a top up with a high potassium (K) fertiliser; and for black spot and white scale a spray with Dimethoate 300 at a rate of 1ml per litre of water. In a previous column, I wrote about the bromeliad Aechmea blanchetiana as this spectacular plant is flowering at present, and I would like to share more information about this species. This plant could be said to be the princess of the bromeliad family. The majestic plant grows to more than one metre across, commanding the attention of those walking by. The fiery orange leaf colouring is unusual in the plant world and thus very useful in a landscaper’s portfolio. Although this plant is extensively used in tropical and subtropical landscapes, it is not suitable for use outdoors in the more temperate climates south of Aechmea blanchetiana - (left) grown in mostly shade and (right) grown in full sun Sydney.
If it’s feral, it’s in peril January is Feral Month – where the ABC is running a ‘dob in a feral animal’ project via their website. The national broadcaster is asking people to report any feral animal sightings across the country during the month of January. Whether it’s a wild dog, fox, Indian myna bird, feral pig or even a cane toad, the ABC wants to know about it. Reports of pesky pests can be made via SMS, email, the Feral Month website or on Twitter. The Feral Month website has an interactive map where you can see all the reports from around Australia – just go to www.feralmonth. crowdmap.com The information will go to help the Invasive Animals CRC and other research bodies looking at how to deal with the feral animal problems facing our farmers and land managers. The Feral Month initiative is a prelude to the launch of a national web-based feral animal mapping and reporting tool called FeralScan (www.feralscan.org.au) which will go live on Australia Day. This ‘citizen science’ project is a national cooperative which will provide information and mapping directly to farmers and individuals to better deal with pest animals and their impacts.

mud and debris. Carefully stack the wet photos between sheets of wax paper and seal them in a Ziploc type plastic bag. If possible, freeze the photos to inhibit damage. This way photos can be defrosted, separated and air-dried later when you have the time to do it properly. People can also get in touch with Beerwah Photographics and Ilia will advise on how to proceed. Below are some more tips for handling water damaged photographs: Try to get to flood-damaged photos within two days or they will begin to mould or stick together, making saving them much more unlikely. Begin with photographs for which there are no negatives, or for which the negatives are also water damaged. Photos in frames need to be saved when they are still soaking wet, otherwise the photo surface will stick to the glass as it dries and you will not be able to separate them without damaging the photo emulsion. To remove a wet photo from a picture frame, keep the glass and photo together. Holding both, rinse with clear flowing water, using the water stream to gently separate the photo from the glass. If they do not come apart, leave them with the glass and take them to a photograhic professional. It is important to note that some historical photographs are very sensitive to water damage and may not be recoverable. Older photographs should also not be frozen without first consulting a professional. You may also want to send any damaged heirloom photos to a photographic professional for restoration.

This article by Kimberly Powell is most pertinent in these unfortunate times and may be of help. Pass the information on to family and friends who might find it useful. Whatever you do, don’t throw the photos out in desperation, they can be salvaged. Better to have some small memories than nothing at all. When disasters hit, most people don’t mourn the refrigerator or the couch. Instead, the loss of precious family photographs, scrapbooks and memorabilia is what brings them to tears. While it may seem unlikely when facing piles of soggy, mud-spattered photos, papers and other valuables, saving them may be possible. Most photos, negatives and colour slides can be cleaned and air-dried using the following steps: Carefully lift the photos from the mud and dirty water. Remove photos from water-logged albums and separate any that are stacked together, being careful not to rub or touch the wet emulsion of the photo surface. Gently rinse both sides of the photo in a bucket or sink of clear, cold water. Don’t rub the photos and be sure to change the water frequently. Unfortunately, home-printed inkjet photos might not be salvageable. If you have time and space right away, lay each wet photo face up on any clean blotting paper, such as a paper towel. Don’t use newspapers or printed paper towels, as the ink may transfer to your wet photos. Change the blotting paper every hour or two until the photos dry. Try to dry the photos inside if possible, as sun and wind will cause photos to curl more quickly. If you don’t have time right away to dry your damaged photos, just rinse them to remove any

Sports Results (week ending January 16) The green has had its annual renovation since closing on December 5 and the surrounds, hedges and car park have had some major maintenance over the last couple of weeks. Thanks goes to those dedicated members who provided their time and efforts to help renovate the green and assist in the two ‘working-bees’ to prepare the Club for the 2011 bowling year. Thanks also goes to our Greenkeeper, Terry Little, who has had a real challenge to prepare the green under adverse conditions, including in excess of 1200mm of rain since the green was taken out of play. We had our first game back for 2011 on Saturday afternoon with 32 players enjoying a Club selected game. The triples winners were D Hume, M Bertram and G Richardson from runners-up, L Henderson, M Freshwater and J Aitken. In third place was the fours team of D Sutherland, R White, K Capern and T Little. Our regular weekly bowls events will commence with Ladies’ Day (men are welcome) at 9.00am on Wednesday, January 19 with the usual ‘Open Pairs’ the following day. Next Saturday afternoon, January 22, will be a Club selected social game. The monthly ‘Two Bowl Triples’ will be held at 9.00am on Monday, January 24, and there is still space for another team or two. The 2011 Club Championships will commence

No laughing matter!
A Polish man named Ziggy moved to Australia and married an Australian girl. Although his English was far from perfect, they got along very well until one day he rushed into a lawyer’s office and asked him if he could arrange a divorce for him - “very quick.” The lawyer said that the speed for getting a divorce would depend on the circumstances, and asked him the following questions: Lawyer: “Have you any grounds?” Pole: “JA, JA, acre and half and nice little home.” Lawyer: “No, I mean what is the foundation of this case?” Pole: “It made of concrete.” Lawyer: “Does either of you have a real grudge?” Pole: “No, we have carport, and not need one.” Lawyer: “I mean, what are your relations like?”

This is the time to look at your life, your family, your plans, your work, and your environment. This is the time to get out of the rut and do something different with your life. New opportunities will show themselves. A change of residence is possible, perhaps even connected with work interstate or overseas. Don’t leave anything to chance. Check your work and make sure you are on the right track. Ask for confirmation in writing. There will be some changes in your work as well as a change in the home. Allow yourself time to make these important decisions. Favourable travel will give you a new lease of life. PISCES February 20 – March 20
Conversations and thinking can be intense. If a loved one confided in you make sure that you do not over act. This is a time to spend more time together and stop worrying about money and any other problems that come up. You will be alright. New opportunities will show themselves and open many new doors. ARIES March 21 – April 20
aaronp@gcfn.com.au
Whatever decisions you have made, this is an excellent time to commence them. This can be a turning point in your life. Your home your career and your friends can change dramatically. Travel is also possible at this period. Opportunities can appear out of the blue.
Communications will be extremely important at this time. Follow your intuition. Influential people can come into your life that will become close friends in the future. This is a good time to get in touch with your subconscious and evaluate with absolute honesty your methods and how you respond to others. You may need to stop and look at a situation that you have been putting off for some time. This can be a time of great changes. Make sure you know what you want before going for it. Letting go of the past will be important as well as looking at new ways of earning money. A reunion is also likely.

Important decisions may need to be made. An unexpected call from a friend can help you to make some decisions. There will be a need to keep in touch with your inner self. Your professional and personal life may be in conflict, so some changes may need to be made.
Examine your role in relationships and see if you’re receiving as much as you give. If you are not getting back what you are giving, it is time to change this. Meditation would be excellent and start pampering yourself. A waiting period with a home or business venture can be quite frustrating.
