2017 GAS Member Juried Exhibition on view May 28, 2017 - July 16, 2017 Glass Wheel Studio, in partnership with The Glass Art Society, hosted the 2017 GAS Member Juried Exhibition in conjunction with the 46th annual GAS conference, Reflections from the Edge: Glass, Art, and Performance in Norfolk, Virginia. In fall 2016, GAS member artists working in all glassmaking processes, as well as those creating video pieces that documented glass-related performances, were invited to submit applications of their recent work for consideration. Guided by benchmarks of originality, craftsmanship, and the creative exploration of the material of glass, distinguished jurors Kimberli Gant, McKinnon Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Chrysler Museum of Art, Paul Sacaridiz, Executive Director of Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and Cheryl White, Director of Glass Wheel Studio carefully selected pieces from a pool of over 250 entries. Ranging from delicate blown and flameworked sculptures, to 500-lb interactive musical instruments, to live performances with models clad in glass skin, the breadth and quality of works included in this exhibition are a testament to the versatility and vitality of contemporary glass today.

Shaun Conroy | 1st Place Clyde-Stew #1, 2016 Mixed media sound sculpture, glass, metal and friction mallets Clyde-Stew#1 is a sculpture and musical instrument. It is an interactive sound sculpture utilizing friction mallets that excite resonance in the sculpture. It is designed to invoke participation in the process of art making and to inspire viewers to create musical sounds. In an attempt to extend the range of his upright bass, jazz musician Clyde Flowers first introduced his superball mallet to a group of session musicians in California in the 1960s. These musicians ultimately shared the friction mallet concept with their friends and it gained popularity with its ‘other worldly’ sounds. New York City-based multi-instrumentalist Mark Stewart advanced the concept further by attaching two superballs of varying sizes to produce different pitches and the ability to play chords when simultaneously played. Stewart and Conroy explored the superball mallet concept while members of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology glass band. Inspired by these two musical pioneers, Conroy designed and named this sound sculpture in their honor.

Janis Miltenberger and Susan Taylor Glasgow |2nd Place Couplet, 2017 Kiln-formed and lampworked glass Couplet is a chandelier featuring lampworked objects by Janis Miltenberger and structural and kiln-formed components by Susan Taylor Glasgow. After mutually admiring one another’s work for years, they were finally able to collaborate during a 2016 joint residency at the Pittsburgh Glass Center. Their guiding tenant was to honor each artists’ styles and processes in balanced and beautiful ways. The resulting chandelier marries not only their master skills and individual aesthetics, but also their commitment to the collaborative nature of glassmaking.

Ji Huang | 3rd Place Remembrance of Space 7, 2017 Cast Glass Throughout history, glass is most often used to create containers. Huang’s work uses glass as a container for his memory of space. Some of the artist’s earliest memories are a recollection of non-visual, tactile sensations subconsciously computed for cognition of space. His investigation in glass seeks to recreate these memories of space in physical form using the materiality of glass, its translucency, and the way it reveals interior space. Huang uses the computational physics simulation of an elastic plane to generate the form for the inner void and to insinuate the formation and fluidity of our spatial consciousness.
