Radio-controlled boat on Brown’s Inlet

The boats are back at Brown’s Inlet!

Starting May 10, the radio-controlled boats are back on the pond at Brown’s Inlet every Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., weather permitting. Members of the Rideau Nautical Modellers Club bring their boats and sail the high

seas of the Glebe. Anyone interested is welcome to stop by of an evening.

Members of the Rideau Nautical Modellers share an interest in building and operating various types of radiocontrolled water craft, including both surface craft and submarines.

On August 12 at 7 p.m., club mem-

bers will spend an evening in the Glebe sailing on Brown’s Inlet. Members will be there from 7:30 p.m. until sunset. We will be “lighting up the night” with our radio-controlled ships, having timed course runs. All are welcome.

Great Glebe Garage Sale on Saturday, May 27

A reminder about the Great Glebe Garage Sale (GGGS): the date for this neighbourhood-wide garage sale and celebration of spring is coming up soon, on Saturday May 27, from 8 a.m. till 3 p.m., though keen shoppers may be out much earlier.

Many Glebe households will already be sorting and preparing the items they plan to sell or planning their bake sales or other food offerings. The Bank Street merchants are also getting ready for their fantastic sidewalk sale.

Everyone is encouraged to give 10 per cent of sales to the Ottawa Food Bank, which the GGGS has supported for many years. The Food Bank provides food and support, including

basic baby supplies such as diapers, to over 41,500 people in Ottawa every month, 36 per cent of whom are children. It supplies food to shelters, food cupboards and meal programs as well as school and summer day camp lunches. It gets under three per cent of its funding from government sources.

Because it purchases large quantities and has a number of food industry partners, every dollar you donate is worth about $5 in food.

This year, donations are requested to be made online through the Food Bank’s website at www.ottawafoodbank.ca/donate, by selecting “Great Glebe Garage Sale” on the dropdown menu on the donations page.

Donations can also be mailed to the Ottawa Food Bank at 1317B Michael Street, Ottawa, ON K1B 3M9. The

Food Bank will not have a table at the Glebe Community Centre this year.

Parking and traffic are always challenging on the day. Remember that you must not block any part of the sidewalk or road. Roads must be kept clear for emergency vehicles. There will be parking restrictions on a number of emergency routes and on Bank Street. Keep in mind that, with the extra traffic during the sale and the road closures associated with Race Weekend, it may take you longer to drive in and out of the neighbourhood, so give yourself extra time.

New this year, the Glebe Community Association (GCA) will partner with Kind Canada, a national not-forprofit organization that encourages Canadians to help create a culture of kindness from coast-to-coast-to-coast.

The GCA will run several activities during the GGGS to promote and encourage kindness within our community. You will see posters with suggestions for small acts of kindness; you may also encounter a GCA volunteer who will capture your stories of kindness to share through social media. Please stop and say hello!

If you are planning to sell hamburgers, hotdogs or other cooked food, it is important to know and comply with the city’s food regulations. You’ll need to apply to the city at least two weeks before the sale (it’s free). The city’s website at www.Ottawa.ca provides information about health and safety requirements and the online application.

Have fun and enjoy the Glebe’s annual celebration of spring and communal spring-cleaning! The sale is a great way to sell old treasures and buy new ones, catch up with friends and neighbours, enjoy the sunshine and support the Ottawa Food Bank, all in one fabulous morning. The New Art Festival

The organizers of The New Art Festival are working hard to get everything ready for a great 25th edition on the weekend of June 10 – 11! We have a super group of participating artists.

It’s exciting to include many new artists who are hearing about the quality of the festival and applying from all over Quebec and Ontario. Local food purveyors will be on hand and the Ottawa Art Gallery summer crew will present children’s activities. There is everything you need for a great day out in Central Park in the Glebe during the art festival weekend.

As many people know, the festival was initiated by the Glebe’s own Bhat Boy. Art in The Park, as it was called for its first 15 years, began as a true grassroots festival with local artists joining Bhat in the park for a day of showing their art, playing music, picnicking and generally having a lovely time under the long-gone huge old maple tree in the middle of the lower park. The festival has grown over the years and its reputation as a vibrant community-oriented event has travelled far and wide.

One exhibitor, potter Dale Mark, comes all the way from Burlington, ON as he finds it one of the best summer shows in all of Ontario for the lovely setting, the quality of the work and the great response he gets from visitors. Another artist who keeps returning to the festival is Jacob Rolfe.

Currently based in Nova Scotia, Jacob grew up near Central Park and used to hang out at Patterson’s Creek as a teenager in the 1990s. He says it’s always a pleasure to return and spend time in the park under the lovely trees.

Ross Stuart from Amherst, ON builds musician-quality stringed instruments, often using discarded tin cans as resonating chambers. “I look forward to returning to The New Art Festival because I love the park setting and the people who visit over the weekend are eager to participate. The audience is informed, educated, eager to know more and to return home with a new family heirloom.”

We have been delighted to get applications from artists who also participate in the highly regarded Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition held at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto each July.

It’s a real treat for Ottawa art fans who come to the festival. There is so much great original art to see and artists to talk to about their work.

We often hear from visitors that they wait to buy a special piece of art until the festival rolls around, as it’s so meaningful to buy from the artists themselves.

So if you have never been to Ottawa’s first and biggest juried fine art and craft festival, do yourself a favour and come to our 25th year celebration!

The Glebe loses a long-time resident, we lose a friend

I’m confused. The advertisement in the Glebe Report from my Member of Parliament says that she is “working for you.” I recall her musing there will be a carbon tax levied against every Canadian, causing a change in our energy use that will lead to better lives through breathing cleaner air. Then I see her standing in front of a microphone in British Columbia announcing the tripling of fossil fuel flows to Vancouver harbour, an environmental disaster begging to happen.

To triple the flow you have to triple the input, which necessitates generating more carbon emissions, not less.

If I follow her train of thought, she and her government will approve of every 18-year-old inhaling marijuana smoke into their lungs, increasing the likelihood of the onset of mental illness. And when these 18-year-olds stand on the corner inhaling pot combined with cleaner carbon-taxed air, is that how she is working for us?

Dr. Gail Beck, Clinical Director of Youth Psychiatry, Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, says, “Regular users of cannabis can actually see, over a period of time, a decrease in their intelligent quotient, in their IQ.” Dr. Beck recommended that my member of parliament not support legislation that would legalize cannabis before the age of 25. This was ignored. I’m confused. Is she working for us or against us?

My mother-in-law, Olga Costanza (Olga’s Deli and Catering), is 86. Her best friend, Sophia Walkowiak, a resident of the Glebe for 70 years, is 91. It is said that it takes a village to raise a child. I would argue it also takes a village to care for our elderly.

Olga and Sophia have spent 85 per cent of their days together for the past two years. Whether it’s watching TV, sitting on Sophia’s front porch in the Glebe or sharing a meal together at Olga’s Deli, they are true BFFs. On Sunday, March 26, my husband and I picked up “the ladies” and brought them back to our house for a sleepover. It started with a bubble bath, followed by their favourite dinner, KFC. We went out for an hour, and when we returned, they were sitting together, sharing a blanket and watching TV. After a sweet snack and a cold drink, it was bedtime. We set them up in a room with two twin beds and closed the door for the night.

Monday morning, as I was getting ready for work, Sophia wandered into the hallway, asking where the bathroom was. In she went and a few minutes later, we heard a bang. My husband Ezio rushed in and found Sophia lying on the floor, barely breathing.

I dialled 911, panicked. So many questions! What is her breathing like?

What do you mean by laboured? Can you get her on her back? Can you start CPR? During the barrage of questions, all I could think was why can’t I hear the sirens? “Please hurry,” I said.

Ezio was amazing. While he performed CPR, I salted the driveway and steps that were covered in ice. Of course, what felt like hours was 10 minutes, and a fire truck, two police officers, an ambulance and eight emergency response personnel arrived.

One phone call brought all this help.

how remarkable Canada is, with our universal healthcare. When I told the police officer I didn’t have a health card for Sophia he said “don’t worry, she’ll get the care she needs, we can worry about the card later.” Oh Canada!

Sophia left the house with a strong pulse and in great care, but unfortunately, that wasn’t enough. Sadly, she passed away that evening, one day before her 92nd birthday.

Sophia was a World War II concentration camp survivor. She was the mother of five children, had an incredible green thumb and made the most amazing plum jam using plums from her own tree. But most of all she was my mother-in-law’s best friend. Her last night on earth she spent with her best friend of 50 years, after a bubble bath and a favourite meal, nestled under a blanket, watching TV. We should all be so lucky.

RIP Sophia. Your friendship will be missed.

talks about getting young people good jobs. (If their IQ is on a downward trajectory, that may be challenging.) Good jobs are created through effective tax policy that encourages everyone to invest. Programs on borrowed money are a fool’s game with a bad ending.

Could you imagine every MP building an independent job creation program in their respective riding rather than concentrating on macro issues with pan-Canadian impact?

Let’s move on to “here to help you,” the ad slogan of my Member of Provincial Parliament. Scott Heaney, in last month’s Glebe Report, has it right.

Management of the energy file by the Ontario Liberal government has been a train wreck. Yasir Naqvi says he is here to help, yet people who live in rural Ontario must choose between food and their electrical bill and young people in Toronto cannot afford a home. If you live outside, say, Perth, Ontario, Mr. Naqvi’s government significantly increased your property taxes and hydro rates. While the Honourable Catherine McKenna was trying to get you into the middle class, Yasir Naqvi was doing his best to keep you out. That family outside Perth has a high efficiency propane furnace that now attracts a carbon tax and they use Hydro One electricity. The unintended consequences of public policy are that they now use their fireplace to burn wood and the emission footprint from their property is likely tripled.

I’m confused. Who are our elected officials working for and who are they here to help?

Booksellers should not profit from charities Editor, Glebe Report I attended the Mutchmor Public School book sale this April. Sales such as these allow a person to stumble onto great books and for a few dollars, help to fund community schools.

When bookshop owners arrive, they unbalance the relationship. They gather the books they know will sell, depriving other people of the chance to find a special book. A book that might have fallen into the hands of a student, elderly person, or anyone with little money now falls into the hands of someone who will mark it up and sell it for a profit.

A book that costs $1 might be marked up to $4 and the school receives none of the profit. Many of the sellers I saw had boxes of books,

so multiply the mark-up. A well-established bookshop has a year-round stream of donations, but a charity book sale is an annual event. Schools have only a few days per year to gather their funds.

I understand that the used book market is slower than it used to be, but it is unethical to profit from a charity event. While booksellers pay large sums for the books they buy, it is nothing compared to the profit they earn.

In doing so, they deprive schools of much-needed money and ordinary people of the magic of discovering a book they’ve always wanted to read.

Perhaps it is time to make these book sales fair for schools and the people who support them.

The Arboretum is a treasure, but it’s vulnerable

I recently spoke with Eric Jones, past president of Friends of the Farm.

Jones says there isn’t a best season to visit the Arboretum; they all have their charms. In spring many trees push up showy blossoms to attract birds, competing for avian attention. Nearly all trees have blossoms, in fact some are so small that humans don’t notice them but the birds and insects do. In summer, deciduous trees are at their leafy peak and in autumn they blaze with colour. Winter is the season of trunks, branches and silhouettes.

People need to connect with green space every day. “In the city, we don’t get enough exposure to trees and nature,” says Jones. “We need to cherish these spaces. We also need to protect them and resist encroachment. The pressures of development aren’t going to go away and, if we aren’t vigilant, our green space will decline. There are parts of Ottawa that are plant deserts.”

Jones stresses that the Arboretum is both precious and precarious. Its central location makes it exceedingly vulnerable to development creep. The Friends are concerned that the 1998 designation of the Farm as a national historic site is chiefly symbolic and does not safeguard it from potential development.

The Arboretum is not in the Glebe, but it is close enough that many of us can walk or bike to it in less than half an hour. And we do, in all seasons. We stroll, run, cycle, walk the dog, picnic, bird-watch, take pics, have our wedding photos done, toboggan and more. It’s a treasure that many of us consider part of the ’hood.

Originally the Dominion Arboretum, this magnificent park is an integral part of the Central Experimental Farm. Its 26 hectares (64 acres) within the 400 hectare (1,000 acre) Farm are home to an astonishing 1,700 tree and shrub types.

The Farm was founded in 1886 as the central research station for the federal Department of Agriculture, now Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

It is impossible to talk about the Farm and the Arboretum without reference to the Friends of the Farm, a not-for-profit

organization of volunteers dedicated to the continued health and welfare of these important assets. In addition to offering an array of events including popular tree tours, the Friends have prepared two reference guides replete with brilliant photographs. In 2017, for Canada’s sesquicentennial, the Friends released Blooms: An Illustrated History of the Ornamental Gardens at Ottawa’s Experimental Farm by Richard Hinchcliff. It’s a gorgeous book and well worth owning; see www.friendsofthefarm.ca.

For the Love of Trees: A Guide to the Trees of Ottawa’s Central Experimental Farm Arboretum appeared in 2007 but it remains a beautiful and useful guide.

It offers a photographic record of a great number of trees including the ash trees that, over the past decade, have fallen victim to the emerald ash borer. The vast majority of the trees featured in the book can still be seen today.

While the Friends understand that a new modern care facility is needed, they are deeply concerned by the erosion of the integrity of the Farm and its scientific purposes. They are dismayed that 15 to 20 acres of the 60-acre campus could be designated for above-ground parking.

Creating a lasting green legacy for future generations

One of Ottawa’s most unique characteristics is its particularly large geographical scale. Its total land surface of 2,758 km² is large enough to encompass the cities of Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Much of our City’s land surface is made up of rural and farming areas that boast a rich and diverse green space and tree canopies.

As our city’s population grows, so do our family-centric suburbs and vibrant urban neighbourhoods. Ottawa is working with numerous partners and organizations on tree planting initiatives that will see thousands, if not millions, of trees planted in our city this year alone to keep our urban core green and our neighbourhoods beautiful.

events and celebrations planned for our nation’s sesquicentennial, special projects are being implemented to leave a legacy for future generations. One of the legacy projects is the Canada 150 Maple Groves project. The City of Ottawa will plant a grove of 150 native Canadian maple trees in each of our 23 wards. These groves, which may take the form of a formal cluster of trees, linear groupings, or maples planted in a reforestation site or natural area, will consist of native Canadian sugar, red and silver maples. The sites within each ward have already been selected and tree planting will start this month.

Canada’s 150th birthday has also inspired Ecology Ottawa and Tree

Ottawa’s One Million Trees legacy project. This ambitious project is a great example of collaboration, as local schools, community associations, corporations, charities and residents will work together to plant one million trees in the city of Ottawa.

Ottawa 2017 announced last month that the Red Bull Global Rallycross championship event will be held in Ottawa for the very first time. The series’ organizers have committed to planting 3,000 trees to offset the event’s carbon footprint in support of the One Million Trees project and to further support this important legacy of the sesquicentennial year. The legacy would not be complete without honouring Ottawa’s history as a lumber town. Ottawa’s Canadian Football League and 2016 Grey Cup Champions the Redblacks announced last season that for each touchdown the team scores at TD Place Stadium, a tree will be planted at the OC Transpo Trim Park and Ride in recognition of the thousands of football fans who use transit services to get to the games. The newly planted green space, the Redblacks Forest, will be a mix of different species of trees. 26 trees, the number of home touchdowns for the Redblacks in the 2016 season, will be planted in June.

Ottawa football fans who cheered the Redblacks can now also celebrate the addition of green space. The Redblacks Forest is a great example of the city’s commitment to supporting an environmentally sustainable Ottawa while leaving a lasting green legacy for future generations.

We were delighted by the many poems we received on the theme of Canada’s 150th birthday, including the poems by students published in the February 2017 Glebe Report. In this issue, we are very pleased to offer poems on Canada’s sesquicentennial submitted by the wider writing community.

My small connection with reality, my ever fleeting sanity, this transient mortal being sensing this brief and short-lived clarity.

I wanted to make a present for Canada’s 150th birthday.

I thought, what is strong and resilient like Canada and I thought of a rope.

But a rope is made of identical fibres

and they all lie perfectly aligned, and the fibres all look and smell and feel the same.

And a rope isn’t very flexible.

This rope is nothing at all like Canada.

So I decided to make a truly Canadian rope

The refuge for this refugee, all my belongings I’ll give up to thee, just save me this patch of land, and in the end let me be buried here, this here, where I stand.

I wove together a thin piece of worn brown leather together

with a strip from a mosaic quilt, colourful and unexpected.

Then I added a maple sapling because it bends

and it has youth and enthusiasm.

Next I took a piece of hemp because,

.....well....just because.

Then to this I added three more things.

A lace from a hockey skate, A long piece of duct tape because sometimes

that’s the only thing that will work, and a shaft of wheat that is golden and lithe.

And I thought, this is it. This is Canada.

Doors Open at Abbotsford

Les Scharfe will be posted just outside the heritage house to show off a special antique when Abbotsford at The Glebe Centre takes part in the annual Doors Open Ottawa event on Saturday, June 3.

Scharfe and his 1930 Model-A Ford will get a prime parking spot at Abbotsford House, across from Lansdowne Park, for Doors Open, which is a free, annual architectural event to celebrate the community’s built heritage.

Scharfe hopes his antique car draws people of all ages to the heritage stone house at 950 Bank Street to check out his car and tour Abbotsford. The historic house itself is celebrating 145 years. Tea and scones will be for sale inside.

heads when touring around the Glebe.

Scharfe has babied his vintage car for the past 30 years and, since his retirement, he’s spent countless hours restoring every inch of it.

Scharfe said that while many young people lack nostalgia for old cars, the Model-A will often stir memories in seniors.

“Mostly older people remember those cars,” said Scharfe. “I like to hear their stories and memories.”

Abbotsford at The Glebe Centre will also unveil at noon on Doors Open Day a special collaborative project recently commissioned to mark Canada’s 150th birthday. The seniors’ centre received a community grant from the province to create a project to commemorate the celebration. With that in mind,

Almonte artist and blacksmith Randy Gill was tasked with designing and building a bench where people can sit with a view of Bank Street.

Gill received design ideas and artistic input from 16 Abbotsford seniors. “We came up with an overall design approach and I carved out a section, a tableau to render their ideas into iron,” said Gill.

“It’s about 300 pounds, all forged iron, and I took into account the people who will be using it and researched the best ergonomics for seniors.”

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, Capital ward Councillor David Chernushenko and Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi will be on hand for the bench’s unveiling at noon on June 3.

But that’s not the only 150th birthday celebration at The Glebe Centre in June.

A Block Party is planned for June 10 and the whole neighbourhood is invited.

Most of Monk Street will be blocked off to make way for a bouncy castle, petting zoo and musical entertainment

for visitors of all ages.

Making college and university education available for all kids

Our community of Ottawa Centre is fortunate to be home to one of the most educated work forces in North America. Ottawa has more university graduates per capita than any other city in Canada, and most major American cities. In today’s knowledge-based economy, education is vital to being competitive in securing employment and in markets at home and abroad.

Too often, students and their families face barriers applying to college or university because of tuition fees.

Deserving students should have equal access to a post-secondary education regardless of their background or economic standing. That is why we are modernizing the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) to help more students pursue higher education based on their ability to learn – not on their ability to pay.

OSAP is a financial aid program that can make it easier for students and families to go to college or university.

The program offers funding for school through grants and loans.

students will access the new OSAP, which is making tuition free for more than 210,000 students that would either have been unable to pursue college or university education, or have graduated with burdensome levels of debt.

In addition to providing free tuition to hundreds of thousands of students each year, the new OSAP will also provide more generous grants. By next year, it is estimated that some 230,000 students receiving OSAP will have less debt as a result of these changes.

Young or old, I encourage all prospective students to visit www.ontario. ca/OSAP to use the new online calculator to quickly determine how much financial assistance they are eligible for

– which may be more than you expect!

The OSAP calculator is a powerful tool. If, for example, you are a single parent with three children and earn $60,000, the tool can show that you are eligible for grants totaling more than $16,000, making tuition free if you decide to attend college.

Life does not stop for education, so we ensured the new OSAP program is available for adult students, married students, students with children, dependent students and single independent students. Students with children may also be eligible to receive funding for childcare costs.

I am confident that through the new OSAP, the Ontario government

is implementing the most ambitious reform of student financial aid in North America. Removing the financial barriers to higher learning and making post-secondary education more affordable is part of our government’s plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.

City approves 8 storeys on Bank Street – what is the future?

We all know the narrative: the Glebe is full of NIMBYs who complain about development.

So after the divisiveness of Lansdowne, the Glebe Community Association (GCA) wanted to reset the relationship with the city and developers. We worked constructively to find solutions to meet their needs as well as the needs of the community.

More recently, we helped move forward significant proposals on Bank Street, Queen Elizabeth Drive and Bronson Avenue, to promote development that “fits in and works well” with the character of the established, lowrise neighbourhood while promoting intensification and achieving the city’s Official Plan (OP).

The city told us not to expect a Secondary Plan for the neighbourhood intended to tailor city policies to local circumstances, and that there wasn’t much opportunity for development on Bank Street so it was not a priority. So we launched ImagineGlebe, a visioning exercise that produced a community vision for the future of Bank Street. It calls for development that reflects the heritage and established low-rise neighbourhood character and was supported by over 900 Glebe residents and visitors.

The eight-storey Beer Store proposal was officially submitted last August. We met frequently with the developer to review plans, provide feedback and share ImagineGlebe results. Four storeys was fine (current zoning by-law is four storeys), six stor-

What is the city’s vision? With no Secondary Plan, it’s not clear. If the city wants to allow additional height and massing that is a departure from Traditional Mainstreet zoning, we think this should be determined through a robust planning process

The latest OP (still under appeal) says: “This [Official] Plan supports mid-rise building heights up to six storeys on Traditional Mainstreets unless a Secondary Plan states otherwise.”

Why would the city completely ignore this direction? Why were the amendments we proposed to make this project work refused?

We were advised there is no basis in current policy for refusing the request for additional height. But the policy says that, in order for greater height to be considered, a proposal must comply with all policies in the OP, including compatibility, urban design, respect for neighbourhood character, etc., and in addition, must meet one of five subjective conditions. The city stated that this project met two of the five conditions: • The building has access to an arterial road, and • A built form transition can be considered appropriate.

But the first condition actually reads, “The proposal is in an area characterised by taller buildings on an arterial road, not simply “has access to an arterial road.” Why did the city exclude this critical aspect of the condition? Perhaps because stating it correctly highlighted an obvious contradiction, as in the very

next sentence they describe the area as “characterised by a lower built form.”

When Lansdowne was proposed, concerns were raised that a precedent would be set by the taller buildings (i.e. the “Vibe” condo at Lansdowne combined with the Lord Lansdowne residence).

Both buildings are located at what the city refers to as “gateway” locations that can support additional height. The city’s response to this concern: “No. All development proposals will be considered on their own merit taking into account relevant policies.” It turns out that this response was completely disingenuous, as the two “gateway” buildings are indeed being used as precedents to meet the condition for additional height.

If the city’s interpretation of what constitutes “an area characterised by taller buildings” stands, it makes the six-storey height limit on Traditional Mainstreets meaningless.

Regarding the second condition, “building transition,” eight storeys or even six storeys this close to two-storey homes does not make for “building transition.” A one-metre building stepback (on the northern portion) along Bank Street does not make for a pedestrian-friendly “podium” effect. In 2011, eight-storey buildings proposed as part of Lansdowne facing Holmwood Avenue and Bank Street were reduced to five storeys after a successful Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) appeal because they also did not result in effective “building transition.”

Afterward, Mayor Watson wrote, “I am very proud to be the mayor of a city in which such a compromise can be found by citizens working together.

You and your neighbours have created…a turning point in the city’s working relationship with the neighbouring community.”

The GCA has proposed reasonable amendments that are no different from the types included in Secondary Plans for Stittsville and Centretown, even if members of Planning Committee have chosen to ignore this. The city has room within its policies to support the amendments but has chosen to interpret them broadly to allow this incompatible development. Unfortunately the community has no choice but to go back to the OMB. Mayor Watson, do we really want to turn the page back again?

GCA 1983 to 1987: reminiscent of the GCA’s traditional concerns with planning, landscape control and traffic.

The GCA had become a mature organization and an ongoing irritant to some of the great and good at City Hall.

Lansdowne and the Ex

Lansdowne’s major tenant, the annual Exhibition (the Ex), learned nothing from experience and continued to operate with blissful neglect of its impacts on the surrounding community. It came to a head after the 1983 Ex when, in response to a call

by Alderman Howard Smith, an angry crowd of 300 met at the community centre. Also attending were Mayor Marion Dewar, aldermen Marlene Catterall and Jim Durrell (a director of the Ex), and police and city staff.

Complaints concerned front yard parking (pro and con); traffic; congestion and circulation problems; and noise, vandalism and general rowdiness. The basic problem was the city’s refusal to take action to manage average daily inflows of 100,000 people and to mitigate the excesses of unbelievably noisy rock concerts.

In the next few years, thanks to the work of aldermen, city hall key staff, the GCA, and the new Ex general manager (former mayor Don Reid), huge improvements were made via front-yard parking bans, street closures, bus shuttles, taxi zones, enforcement of noise bylaws and normal police presence, all measures that were considered highly novel. The 1986 Ex was considered by the GCA to be “the best in many years.”

Our community was not unanimous about the Ex. Some residents living near Lansdowne saw lawn parking as a way to make money. Others didn’t like the continual spot-seeking traffic.

But the Ex was only the tip of the Lansdowne iceberg. The 10-day use of the park for this increasingly obsolete annual fair effectively sterilized it for alternative uses or for other development. The Ex operated rent free, banking its surpluses towards a highly theoretical future move to other quarters. However, research by GCA directors, in particular Don Ray, showed that it simply could not accumulate the resources to fund a move.

egy: work to minimize the Ex’s disruption to the community while advocating at City Council and with the Ex Board itself for it to move elsewhere. Neither the city nor the owners of Lansdowne nor the GCA had thought through the eventual use of Lansdowne, though the city had adopted a goal of developing Lansdowne as a multi-use centre for spectator and participatory sport and leisure, plus trade shows. The city’s goal was subsequently amended to also consider minimizing negative impacts on the Glebe. Efforts towards this future were desultory during this period: in 1986 we saw a proposal for a commercial water park development, but little more.

Market Value Assessment (MVA)

The GCA Board failed to apprehend the significance of an Ottawa City Council decision taken in its 1982– 1985 term to request an “impact” study of adopting the new for Ontario system of market value assessment.

And nobody warned the GCA. The study’s report landed at Council just before Christmas 1985. It became clear that the immediate effect was to shift the balance of taxation revenue from the suburbs to the central wards.

Alderman (and former GCA president) Rob Quinn and five other aldermen who mostly represented older central wards.

Council would have defeated MVA adoption if two central ward aldermen had not unexpectedly voted for it.

Opposition to this reassessment was a major GCA effort that included preparation of a brief explaining our rationale and offered a more socially equitable alternative: a push for improved relief provision for impacted lower-income property owners and a series of workshops, to be held jointly with the Ottawa South Community Association, to assist residents in preparing appeals of their assessments. …and much more

We also carried out the traditional work of a community association. Our approach was to stick to the Glebe Neighbourhood Plan, developed by community members under city supervision from 1978 to 1980. Strict consistency with the plan and zoning bylaws was not always possible in a neighbourhood that conformed to so little in the planners’ handbooks. Bal-

ancing these concerns made and still makes much of the GCA’s work so difficult and interesting. We dealt with: • redevelopment of the “Whyte House” at 520 Queen Elizabeth Driveway, a lengthy and frustrating adventure culminating in the unnecessary destruction of a prominent landmark; • redevelopment of the old Avalon Theatre on Bank Street, in a model of developer-community cooperation; • expansion of a group home for men recovering from alcohol and drug dependencies, which the GCA did not oppose in spite of neighbours’ demands; • elimination of high-rise zoning on Patterson near Bank and subsequent construction of a wellintegrated townhouse development adjacent to Central Park; • an overly dense townhouse project at Fifth and O’Connor, which we successfully opposed; • the sudden emergence of the Ritz restaurant after the NCC had said no more than a small snack bar on the site (we objected); and • Region’s review of its Official Plan, especially on traffic planning, e.g. potential Queensway expansion.

Community building

The GCA also undertook to better integrate local businesses into the community. Based on a survey, the GCA worked with businesses to establish the Glebe Business Group under the effective leadership of Ernie Saar. Our inaugural GCA/GBG project was the installation of angle parking on several avenues off Bank Street, followed by a competition to develop our Glebe logo.

Another community-building project, combining commerce with fun, was the GCA’s initiation of the Great Glebe Garage Sale, first held in June 1986 is still going strong. Prominent organizers were Don Finless and Linda Thorne. More purely fun were the GCA’s entries in the Winterlude (Hospital) Bed Race. Speed was not our forte, but we were twice winners for best-decorated bed.

FACES (First Avenue Churches and Community Embracing Sponsorship) hopes to raise $100,000 this year to sponsor more refugees.

A recent headline in the UK newspaper The Independent reminded me of the unbelievable scope of the refugee problem: “Syrian civil war: More than five million refugees flee conflict as global support for resettlement wanes.” The italics are mine, as if the statement itself is not cause for disbelief.

According to the UNHCR’s website www.unhcr.org, 53 per cent of the world’s refugees come from three countries: Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia, and nearly 34,000 people are forcibly displaced every day (UNHCR italics this time) as a result of conflict or persecution.

Around 18 months ago, headlines and statistics like these drove governments, community groups and citizens in Canada and around the world to initiate and follow through on the rewarding task of refugee sponsorship and resettlement.

FACES (First Avenue Churches and Community Embracing Sponsorship),

like many other groups in Canada, formed to do something immediate and tangible to help. The three churches on First Avenue joined together with a like-minded community group in 2015 to gather what was necessary to support resettlement: volunteers, stuff and money. With the support of the church organizations and groups like Ottawa’s Refugee 613, we began learning the basics of what we could do to help families resettle in Canada.

And we’ve been successful! We have sponsored two Blended Visa Office Refugee (BVOR) families, where the first year cost is shared between government and the sponsorship group; we’ve helped nine GovernmentAssisted Refugee (GAR) families with support for navigating the “system” and we’ve provided funds and contributions to Matthew House, an organization that directly supports refugee resettlement in Ottawa. We will sponsor another refugee this spring. We’ve contacted CCI (Catholic Centre for Immigrants)

We’ve learned that supporting refugees requires networks of organizers and volunteers with high levels of enthusiasm and a deep desire to help, and sufficient financial resources to fund the work. FACES is hoping to sponsor three or four additional individuals and families over the next year, and for our volunteers to be successful, we’ll need additional funds. We’ve set a fundraising target for 2017 of $100,000. We want to ensure we have the financial reserves before we make a commitment to the individual(s) we are sponsoring, and this is why we are launching our campaign in May 2017.

The goal of our multi-denominational group is to share resources to sponsor refugee families. FACES

will be inclusive and open to refugees regardless of country of origin, faith, ethnicity, sexual orientation, abilities or health condition. St. Matthew’s, St. Giles and Glebe St. James will be reaching out starting in May to talk about the campaign, and to remind their parishioners and the community at large of our successes over the past year. Each of the churches will accept donations (please mark “Refugee Support” on the cheque) and can provide tax receipts for amounts above $25.

J How to speak emoji L Under the language options on my phone, I have English, Arabic, Korean, and emoji. What is this strange emoji language, and who speaks it?

Emoji is a “digital language” used to clarify text-based communication via electronic devices. The goal of using emoji is not to pontificate but rather to succinctly transmit a message. Since emoji is represented by images and animations, some have compared it to our generation’s answer to ancient hieroglyphics.

Most academics are nonplussed by emojis, which many claim waters down our language. However, I found digital language particularly useful while in a hospital in Korea.

Despite spending hours trying to learn the nuances of the Korean language, when I found myself in an emergency situation, all of my studies went out the window. Riddled with pain, my main objective was not to be eloquent, but rather understood. Instead of using my newly acquired Korean words, I ges-

ticulated wildly to a nurse. Then I showed her a picture of an animated emoji fainting, which I felt was an accurate representation of what was about to happen to me should I not receive some assistance. The nurse instantly knew what I meant. She rushed to fetch me some water and medicine. Oddly enough, the language of emojis proved an effective and speedy method of cross-cultural communication.

Don’t get me wrong; I do find the use of emojis a little depressing. Charles Dickens’ “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” captures infinitely more depth and humanity than a mere sad-face and angry-face emojis. However, I think we have to accept that emojis are here to stay, and all we can do is J. Wet Monday or Dyngus Day

There is an age-old tradition in central Europe, mainly Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and parts of Austria and Germany, where people douse each other unceremoniously with water on Easter Monday. Originally, it was associated with pagan spring rites and the perception of the life-giving nature of water. Christians assimilated these rites and nowadays the dousing is just a fun way of celebrating Easter. In parts of U.S. where there are sizable Slavic communities such as in Buffalo N.Y., Easter Monday is dubbed Dyngus Day. In true American spirit, they celebrate it with costume parades, musical bands, perogy feasts and splashing everyone with water.

In Europe it’s more about water pranks. Older folk sprinkle each other gently and humorously. The young don’t have such constraints and let their imaginations run riot. Prankish felonies are not far off, and pity the unprepared. It’s not uncommon to have buckets of water, not always clean water, dumped on the unsuspecting passing under a window or balcony. Water-gun wars rage in shopping malls, dousing passersby. The law appears to be helpless in the face of this tradition and police may even participate in the splashing. In the home, a common prank is a bucket of water attached to a doorframe greeting

the unwary opener with cascading icy water. Kids have great fun hiding with water guns in unlikely places waiting for their quarry. No one is safe.

I remember both fondly and shamefully one Easter long ago when we had family friends staying with us. They had a 10-year-old girl called Basia with them, so my and my younger brother Jan’s target was obvious. Early Monday morning, Jan went quietly up to the guest bedroom and knocked.

“Basia, are you up? I’ve got something to show you.” Basia, still in her pajamas, opened the door. “What’s up?” she asked sleepily. I grabbed her from behind and Jan took her legs, and before she realized what was happening, we dumped her in the bathtub of cold water. Basia shrieked, while we laughed our heads off. My mother shouted, “What’s going on up there!” and was immediately doused with water. She retreated to the dining room and we heard laughter as the adults sprayed each other.

Basia, like the true sport that she was, came seeking revenge. We let her splash us generously. I know she forgave us in the end, but it was a close call. Later, she often told her children the story of her cold-water dip, after she had succeeded in dousing them with icy water.

Queen Pigtoria Day Celebration!

The Glebe is buzzing with preparations for Queen Pigtoria’s birthday.

“Guinea pigs and monarchy are like bread and butter. Destined to be together!” explains Master Bubbles, chief coordinator for Parties ’n Pigs R Us and graduate from the esteemed British Butler Institute. “The guinea pigs’ roots in British history run very deep, very deep, indeed!” adds Master Bubbles.

It began with European traders begging guinea pigs to sail with them from the Andes in the 15th century.

Curious by nature, the furry quadrupeds agreed. “Historical records further show that guinea pigs played a pivotal role in navigation. Carbon studies have recently discovered guinea pig hair as well as excrement traces on early maps, clear evidence they were more than just passengers,” explains Fabienne Pigière, historian and author.

By the 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I, smitten by the delightful creatures, had secured their place in history and as popular companions among the

elite and middle class across Europe.

Famously, multi-coloured guinea pigs Floof and Fluffen feature in both Jan Brueghel the Elder’s and the Younger’s paintings, including “Feast of the Gods,” “Flora & Zephyr,” “Putti Dancing and Making Music” and “The Return from War.” Among the younger generation, piglets feel closest to Peanuts the agouti guinea pig who attended school with Lady Diana. Many claim Diana would not have passed maths without Peanuts, though the guinea pig is credited publicly only with providing Diana early fashion advice.

A s t h e f a b u l o u s we e k e n d approaches, Glebe guinea pigs will not be alone in their celebrations.

Worldwide preparations are being synchronized with the largest event occurring at the Pigtoria & Albert Museum in London, which will host over 500 royal pigs as well as special guests Adele, Ed Sheeran and Cashew from House of Cards (Season 2).

Sometimes you find yourself initially rooting for the bad guys in a film.

This love – hate relationship develops with surprises in Hell or High Water, a production with strong engaging characters.

The bad guys are two brothers who live on their family ranch in west Texas. Tanner (Ben Foster), the ex-con older brother, is wild and unpredictable. Toby (Chris Pine) is more thoughtful. He has two boys, is divorced, pays child support and cares about his kids. He wants to make sure they have a good future.

The Texas landscapes are not what we are used to seeing. There are few people on the streets, and beyond the small towns are desolate country roads that loom in the distance.

We learn that the ranchers’ mother recently died and that their land is being unfairly threatened by foreclosure. They decide to rob a series of the same company’s bank branches in retaliation, banks without any obvious security. They seem, for the most part, to be badly protected. Modus operandi: The brothers steal a car, enter a bank wearing ski masks, demand money and then flee down a narrow alley at crazy speeds to escape pursuit. Afterwards, they use a tractor to bury the cars on their land.

The brothers eat in little diners between robberies. One waitress asks, “What don’t you want.” The film is quirky. Enter two new characters: Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton (Jeff Bridges) and his half-Comanche sidekick Alberto

(Gil Birmingham). Hamilton constantly insults Alberto. The humour is unconventional but we understand that he really cares about his partner. After another robbery Hamilton asks the waitress if she has seen the two brothers.

She refuses to identify them, probably because she found one of the brothers to be very cute.

One robbery is unusual. They steal a small amount of money plus a truck.

They pay a shady car dealer to let them steal the truck. The deal is that the truck won’t be reported stolen until the end of the week so that they can get away.

The younger brother wants to give the ranch to his kids. He tells them, “Don’t be like us. Whatever you do, you do it different.”

Then their lives become two brothers vs two rangers.

After arriving to rob a bank that is closed (bummer), they raid a bigger bank. This is Tanner’s rash idea, not Toby’s. Big mistake. The problem is that in a larger bank, all the people have guns, and the locals chase them.

The brothers decide to separate.

Ranger Hamilton is contacted and joins the chase. He wants to catch these guys before his impending retirement.

The older, crazier brother has a machine gun.

There’s a very strange ending….

Sombre, melancholy and a trifle ponderous, this lushly photographed melodrama from François Ozon (“La Nouvelle amie,” “Eight Women” and “The Swimming Pool”) is a peculiar film for reasons I am hard pressed to put a finger on, but, for all that, a very compelling film.

Frantz takes as its starting point a 1932 Ernst Lubitsch film called Broken Lullaby, and at first blush appears to be a story about regret and remorse, a lost love, love found and then apparently lost again. In the opening scene, a young French veteran (Pierre Niney, Yves Saint Laurent) is seen visiting a cemetery in a provincial town in post-First World War Germany. His name is Adrien and he is laying flowers on the gravesite of a German soldier named Frantz who was killed in the last months of the war. In the Ozon version, however, the narrative is more from the standpoint of Anna, fiancée of the late Frantz, who now lives with his parents. A daily visitor to the cemetery herself, Anna observes Adrien by the gravesite and wonders who he is.

A word here about Ozon, who is one of France’s most prolific directors: It is said that he is wary of being labelled an auteur director, which perhaps explains why each film and the dazzling black and white cinematography that so convincingly conveys the mood seems a complete departure from everything he has done before.

Frantz is no exception; the lugubrious atmosphere of postwar Germany and France serves only to enhance the sui generis nature of this film.

It is the spring of 1919, scant months after the end of the war, and with tension between the two nations still running high, Adrien’s reception in Frantz’s hometown is frosty to say the least. Still, Anna (a very sympathetic performance here from German actress Paula Beer) is intrigued and wants to know about the stranger. And so the deception begins. We know that Adrien had wanted to talk to the boy’s father, but was rebuffed. And whatever he was going to tell the father, that he and Frantz met in one of these inexplicable “fog of war” encounters, he could not possibly repeat to Anna. So he invents a series of meetings in Paris where he and Frantz visit the Louvre and Adrien coaches him in his violin technique.

All this is plausible as Frantz apparently studied in Paris before the war.

As Frantz’s parents, who have by now warmed to Adrien, listen to these stories – stories that bring them closer to their son – Adrien is trapped by his deception and subsequently beset by inner turmoil.

It is not revealing too much to state that he eventually breaks down and reveals to Anna the story he had intended to relate to the father.

Along with the complex web of deceit, there are other familiar themes: the father’s conservative friends talking over beer of “humiliation” and “restoring the Fatherland to its rightful place” and later in a Paris bistro, with a somewhat shocked Anna looking on, traumatized French veterans toasting their fallen comrades and singing a full-throated rendition of “La Marseillaise.”

Interestingly, the flashback sequences outlining the “encounters” between Adrien and Frantz in Paris were shot in colour, setting them off from the main narrative. These scenes are oddly evocative of Truffaut’s Jules and Jim and one may wonder if Adrien is not in fact fantasizing about what might have passed between the two of them had they actually met in Paris.

The second part of this very layered film, where Anna travels to Paris to look for Adrien after her letter has been returned undelivered, moves at a faster pace. Indeed, Anna seems to come alive at this point and we see her adopting the same protective stance toward Frantz’s parents that Adrien adopted toward her at the outset.

Frantz is a very high-toned affair with lots of literary references, Verlaine and Rilke among them. I must admit, I am at a loss to explain the numerous references to Edouard Manet’s painting of “Le Suicidé,” or why it should afford such comfort to Anna as she views it in the Louvre.

Then Anna is made of stern stuff and I think it is fair to say that Paula Beer’s performance carries this most unusual film.

In German and French with English subtitles.

Running time: 113 minutes.

the neighbourhood cat Harry is no ordinary cat. Everyone who lives on the canal side of Bank Street knows him. If you’re new to the Glebe or haven’t had a sighting of this famous cat, here are a few places you can look: Fifth Avenue Court, Fourth Avenue Wine Bar, Mrs. Tiggy Winkle’s, Wild Oat Bakery, KV Dance Studio or practically anywhere on Third, Fourth or Fifth avenues.

Now, to really understand this fiery orange cat you need to know his story, how he became the loving Harry he is now. It all started with Harry living on a farm in Cochrane, Alberta. He lived with a kind woman, Judy Baily, who had been expecting an indoor cat but got the opposite. Harry was a cat who wanted to roam the land. Judy was ready to give him up to the Humane Society when she remembered a little boy named Brody Rector who loved Harry. After giving it some thought, she gave Harry to Brody and his mother Shannon.

Harry was definitely not the first animal on the Rector’s farm. There were three horses, two dogs, two other cats and 24 chickens. That’s how Harry got used to having lots of company around. A few years later, Brody, Shannon and Harry moved to Ottawa

Harry the neighbourhood cat, a.k.a. Harry the English Gentleman and other aliases. Catch him on Instagram @fourthavenueHarry.

to live near their close relatives, the Innes family.

T here a re so ma ny ways to describe Harry, but these are the best. Harry thinks he’s human: he can ring doorbells, sneak into cars or suddenly appear from under your bedcovers. He always lets people pet him; more accurately, he chases them down the street until they pet him. Whether you believe it or not, Harry is famous. He’s the only cat to give and receive Christmas cards and he even has his own Instagram account (@fourthavenueHarry).

Harry has lots of nicknames like “Harry the Human,” “Harry the Stately Cat” and “Harry the English Gentleman.” Recently, I was talking to my good friend Ella Lambert when Harry walked up my front steps. Ella thought he looked like a tiger but I think he looks like Firestar, the Thunder Clan leader from Erin Hunter’s famous book series, Warriors.

Like every cat, Harry has a negative side. As you know, he loves the outdoors but every day there’s a time when he has to come indoors.

Let’s just say Harry doesn’t like that

time. He can get quite grumpy and do strange things, like drag clothes from the upstairs wardrobes until he is fed. No matter what trouble Harry gets into, Brody and Shannon always shower him with love and affection.

So many things go into making our community great. Harry the neighbourhood cat is certainly one of them.

Sophie Innes is a Grade 5 student at Mutchmor Public School – another place where famous cats like to hang out. But that is another story.

Maestro: a hilarious spoof of NACO

The Gladstone’s 2016 – 2017 season concludes with an orchestral flourish as Plosive Productions presents the English-language première of Québécois playwright Claude Montminy’s hit comedy Maestro, from May 25 to June 10, 2017. Maestro depicts the hilarious offstage antics of members of the NAC Orchestra. Nina Lauren and Danielle Ellen translated the play into English.

In the play, the NAC Orchestra’s principal second violin is gunning to be concertmaster, and invites her eccentric new conductor to her home to convince him to promote her, but the Maestro has something else in mind. To make matters worse, her ex-boyfriend composer shows up and insists on making himself a third wheel for the tête-à-tête. How low will they stoop to conquer the Maestro?

Directed by Gilles Provost, former artistic director of Théâtre de l’Île, this

new production will be performed by a trio of Ottawa-Gatineau actors: Manon Lafrenière, Serge Paquette and myself (last seen in The Gladstone’s Finishing the Suit), with shows alternating between English and French.

I learned of the living legend that is Gilles Provost the day after I moved to Ottawa, 20 years ago. Not only does he have an amazing six-decade career under his belt, he’s one of those rare artists who bridges the English – French divide. It’s a thrill to finally be directed by him, in both languages, no less, and to bring his talent to Plosive Productions. And what better way to do it than with a production that’s at once an English-language première and a first French-language show for The Gladstone!

I love the Glebe and find every excuse to spend time here, whether it’s visiting friends and family, shopping or in this case rehearsing a play.

Some neighbourhoods get their trendy moment in the sun, but the wonderful thing about the Glebe is that it’s got such a rich history and a bright future!

And it’s blessed with such great institutions as The Avalon, which has played host to several Plosive creations and served as a great venue for our production of Billy Bishop Goes to War not long ago. I look forward to many more Plosive shows being rehearsed and sometimes presented here, and spending more time in my favourite neighbourhood.

If you have never tried community theatre, you really should. What happens down at the Glebe Community Centre for a week at this time every year is just great stuff.

Whether or not you are a natural fan of live theatre, you will appreciate the performance itself – the story that they tell and the wonderful talent that you see.

But as a local resident, you will also see and be moved by the story within the story: the fact that you are watching your neighbours, whole families (seven families in the case of Fiddler) coming together to deliver such an enjoyable evening.

Mary Tsai, executive director of GNAG and a choreographer for Fiddler, shares a laugh with Dr. Ruth Westheimer, mother of Joel Westheimer, who played the lead character Tevye.

The play is in fact the culmination of an acting course offered by the Glebe Neighbourhood Activities Group (GNAG). So the actors have paid to take the class and have worked for six months to bring this production to their community. Add in a mix of

volunteers who run the lights, move the props, prepare the costumes and paint the set and what you have is a wonderful neighbourhood experience.

This year, the gang tackled the moving story of Fiddler on the Roof and the production was sold out to the rafters and performed to 1,200 people over five days. It is the story of Russian Jews 100 years ago, as told through the perspective of Tevye, a peasant who is struggling to raise his family of five strong-minded daughters, and maintain his Jewish traditions while contending with growing anti-Semitic sentiment that ultimately forces them from their village. It is a challenging story and the team handled it with charm and a pride that touched their audience.

The cast was 46 strong with a mix of people of all ages ranging from 6 to 69. What I enjoy most is watching the kids. This is very hard work with countless rehearsal hours, but children come back year after year, many stepping far out of their comfort zones to perform in front of large audiences.

Joel Westheimer’s performance in the lead role of Tevye was wonderful by any measure. The story that is told in Fiddler touches Joel’s own family history. Joel’s mother attended all six shows “I am 88 years old. To see my son play Tevye…I’m not going to miss a single minute”. She is a Holocaust orphan, forced from Nazi Germany at the age of 10 and sent to Switzerland. She never saw her family again.

She spoke of how it warmed her heart to watch her son perform and of how difficult the play was for her to watch.

moments; the opening monologue by Tevye while Neve Sugars-Keen played her fiddle so well from the roof and the skill of the dancers, particularly at the wedding reception, making the audience guests at the reception. The wonderful singing, especially when the entire cast came together in chorus. And, of course, the song, “Do You Love Me” between husband and wife, that elicited reactions from several couples in the audience.

Hannah Bindman, a veteran of many GNAG productions, played Hodel, her first role outside the chorus.

“One of the biggest challenges is when I’m singing solo parts on stage. There is no one but myself to rely on. It’s only my voice that everyone is hearing.” “Everyone” included her mom.

“I always knew that she could act but I had no idea that she could sing so beautifully.”

In a touching final scene, the villagers, carrying all of their possessions, walked slowly out of their village. As Joel Westheimer stood in the wings preparing for his final scene to close the play, he said with a heavy sigh, “What a brutal end.”

The lights faded as Tevye guided the fiddler away.

A dramatic and difficult play tells an important story and was delivered beautifully by a cast of your neighbours. A story so very well told. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Simple Nettle Soup

Take young spring nettles and chop them finely. Fill a soup pot half full with them. Cover with water and bring to a boil, while finely chopping and adding some onion and salt. After they’ve simmered for a few minutes, add some milk and serve.

The winter famine for what is fresh, growing and green is not known to us as it was to our ancestors in Europe and in this hemisphere. Our world always seems to hold a surfeit, but what of quality? Though many means are employed to keep the produce in our stores looking beautiful, we know that it has travelled from far away and that it has been a very long time since it was growing in the ground. A longing for something fresh arises.

The long winter is over. Green returns to earth. The nettles spring up. How wonderful to prepare food from a plant that was picked as short a time ago as the walk in from the garden, or that we gathered in a basket on an urban hike or country stroll. The nettles jump out from the black earth as they emerge from the loam of old stories. Nettles have fed us, have fed our animals, have clothed us, made our sails, linens and fishing nets.

Burial cloths from the Bronze age were made of nettle. In the ancient tale of the children of Lir, the wild swans could not be transformed into their human shapes again until coats of nettle were woven for them. For the fishnet of Loki, the trickster of Norse mythology, and the nets and ropes of the indigenous ones of North America, nettles have been used and praised, and greeted with welcome recognition and gratitude when they appeared each spring to relieve the green famine of winter.

Dandelion and Potato

Like nettles, which hold a great wealth of vitamins and minerals, the dandelion is a wonder to eat in the spring. They’re bitter, a taste that in traditional cultures was recognized as having the property of cleaning the liver. To make them palatable, combine them with potatoes by panfrying the potatoes and tossing in dandelion leaves at the end of cooking. Another way is to boil potatoes, cool and cut them in chunks, then dress them with olive oil, red wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar. Add salt and the chopped dandelion leaves.

Kitchen-to-Kitchen – a Glebe Report recipe exchange

Triple citrus cheesecake: a daughter’s gift to mom Marisa Romano is a foodie and former scientist who appreciates nutritious and interesting foods and is the prime instigator of the Glebe Report’s Kitchen to Kitchen recipe exchange.

Rachelle Perras shares the cheesecake recipe that she made for her mom’s birthday. “It was a delicious surprise,” says Brenda Perras. “My favourite cheesecake ever.”

Rachelle is an enthusiastic cook who serves the best suppers at the Perras home where the family shares cooking duties. She has enjoyed toiling in the kitchen from a very young age. Now, just turned 18, she has developed a special eye for good recipes to try and to modify, and has started developing dishes that her family is eager to taste.

Cooking is not Perras’s only passion. She is a tenacious hockey player and a volunteer at Christie Lake Kids Camp. You can see her radiant smile at Metro Glebe where she works as a cashier after school.

This triple citrus is a classic cheesecake made very special by the addition of zest and the juice of three citrus fruits: lemon, lime and orange. Fresh and tropical, the acidic tang of the fruits counters the rich buttery taste of the cream cheese for a great summer flavour. The recipe comes from the back of a package of graham cracker crumbs and is available on the Kraft Canada website www.kraftcanada. com/recipes/ where you can also tap into a variety of other mouth-watering

Triple Citrus Cheesecake a triple threat!

Triple citrus cheesecake

(from the Kraft Canada website) Prep time: 10 min.

Total time: 6 hr.

Servings: 12 servings, 1/12 recipe (98 g) each

Ingredients: 1-1/4 cups graham crumbs 1/4 cup butter, melted 3 pkg. (250 g each) Philadelphia Brick Cream Cheese, softened 3/4 cup sugar 3 eggs zest and 1 tbsp. juice from 1 lemon, 1 lime and 1 orange Directions: Heat oven to 350°F. Mix graham crumbs and butter; press onto bottom of 9-inch springform pan.

Beat cream cheese and sugar in large bowl with mixer until blended. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing on low speed after each just until blended. Stir in the citrus zest and juice and pour over crust.

Bake 45 to 50 min. or until centre is almost set.

Run knife around rim of pan to loosen cake; cool before removing rim.

Refrigerate cheesecake 4 hours.

Glebe chefs sink their teeth into Canadian Eats

Justin Way can’t wait to put Canada on a plate.

The head chef at Erling’s Variety already has some savoury plans for Canadian Eats, the new Glebe food promotion that will turn the neighbourhood into a playground for food lovers for 40 days and 40 nights.

The promotion will run from Victoria Day to Canada Day with participating restaurants in the Glebe creating one signature dish they feel captures the spirit of Canada. These dishes will be shared on a collective Canadian Eats menu for the duration of the event, and available for food lovers to taste and taste again.

And local chefs agree that Canadian cuisine needs a little bit more attention.

“You look everywhere and everyone is cooking other ethnicities’ foods from around the world, but nobody really focuses on Canada and we’ve got the best soil in the world,” says Way, chopping up veggies at the Strathcona Avenue restaurant. “Canada is so underrated when it comes to this.”

It didn’t take long for Way and Erling’s owner Liam Vainola to concoct a dish that is “everything Canada,” as it’s typically what the restaurant does on a regular basis. But they’re pulling out all the stops for their sunflower seed barley risotto with rabbit and crème fraîche for Canadian Eats.

“We didn’t want to use rice, because that isn’t typically Canadian, so we can use oat, barley and sunflower seeds,” adds Vainola. “Canadian music, Canadian art, Canadian dance, Canadian film, theatre, television isn’t cool until

the rest of the world thinks its cool. So we are breaking ground right here.”

Head chef and co-owner of Pomeroy House, Rich Wilson, agrees, but he finds it difficult to define Canadian cuisine as such because we are a geographically large country and the flavours from province to province differ so greatly. While prairie plates are featuring Alberta beef and pancakes, east coasters are boiling up lobsters and scallops. But Wilson is up for the challenge.

“I think defining a cuisine as ‘Canadian’ is difficult because we have such a range of influences to draw from. Our country is so big that we have cod coming from Fogo Island off the coast of Newfoundland, different types of salmon coming from

the Pacific plus everything land-based in between,” says Wilson.

“Our game meat is difficult and expensive to source. What coastal provinces are doing seems to be quite different from what Quebec or Ontario is doing. Plus, you look north and it’s a completely different style of eating.”

This is what is driving Canadian Eats, finding the answer to the difficult question: “what is Canadian cuisine?”

There are obvious and simple answers such as maple syrup or poutine, but is that all there is to it? Therein lies the fun: how to unravel the question and help define what makes a dish, well, Canadian. The food celebration will help Canadians understand the food we eat, why we eat it and where it comes from, and it’s all happening as we cele-

brate 150 years as a country. Clearly it’s time to look at our own menu.

“The first time I ate poutine, I fell in love with it,” admits Kim Nguyen, owner of Sen Asian at Lansdowne. The local restaurateur moved to Canada from Vietnam when she was a teenager and she has slowly expanded her palate to include the creole-type Canadian fare in her Asian-fusion kitchen.

Nguyen intends to create a Canadian spin on a Vietnamese dish; something that captures her own culture and embraces Canada all in one bite.

“We wanted to do things a bit more authentic. If we do chicken, Canadians have a certain way of preparing it and we have a different way of preparing it and it’s very authentic to our roots,” she says.

“We want to bring something more authentic to our culture but something that is relatable to Canadians. It’s really about the same type of food but how we both interpret it differently. Food has evolved so much over the years and I think there are ways that we can fuse it to make it very relatable.”

Canadian Eats will entice food lovers, both near and far, to come down and explore first-hand what Canadian food is all about. It will generate a conversation and an appreciation for how rich our cuisine is and how lucky we are to be Canadian.

The Never-ending “to do” list

Monique was at the end of her wits.

When she first called me seeking a coach, she was considering taking a leave of absence from work. Balancing her responsibilities as manager at a large advertising firm with being a spouse and mother of two teenagers felt overwhelming and her doctor was concerned about her blood pressure.

At our first meeting, Monique and I discussed her daily routine, interests, family, work and all the things she enjoyed doing. We very quickly identified the focus of our coaching program: for her to connect to what deeply mattered to her and to what brought her ease and joy.

From the start, I observed a sense of urgency in Monique’s expression.

When she spoke, words tumbled from her mouth so quickly she appeared not to take a breath.

Weekdays, Monique literally sprang out of bed at 6 a.m., jumped into the shower, made breakfast for the family and prepared lunches for the kids. She rarely sat down, moving about and sipping her coffee as she orchestrated everyone’s schedule in the kitchen.

When the kids were finally out the door, her husband dropped her off at work. Some evenings she would work late and have to take a bus or taxi home. At the end of a long day Monique resented the fact that the family still expected her to make supper for them. Weekends were spent driving her son to sports practices and

her daughter to dance lessons. She literally had no time for “me” left.

Monique and I met every three weeks over the course of our sixmonth coaching program, focussing on conversations and practices that would help shine a light on how to find that path to the ease and joy she so deeply longed for and felt was unattainable.

Our work together was slow, steady and deliberate. One of the practices I designed for Monique she found hugely challenging. I asked her to transcribe the “to do” list she carried

in her head onto paper twice a week for three weeks, numbering tasks in terms of their importance to her that day. Then I asked her to post the list on the refrigerator door where she and the family could see it. Every day she had to remove one task from the list and replace it with an entry called “Time For Me.” It was up to her to decide what “Time For Me” would entail. It could be anything from taking a walk around the block to reading a magazine article, reciting a poem, calling her brother or pausing for a cup of tea.

The key was to keep the activity short,

no more than 10 minutes long.

For Monique to make the changes that would result in finding more ease and joy in her day, she would have to become deeply aware of her habitual pattern of not including herself on the “to do” list. By deliberately bringing attention to her habit and by introducing one new element to disrupt the habit, the “Time For Me” activity, Monique would gradually develop the “muscles” to be able to shift to a new way of being, a shift from feeling selfish to feeling deserving.

Initially, Monique struggled to remove anything from the “to do” list and replace it with an activity for herself. Gradually, she began to see how random the list was and realized the pressures she was putting on herself to constantly deliver on all fronts.

One of the first activities she chose, a 10-minute walk, gradually became an hour-long healthy habit.

Monique decided to take a sixmonth leave of absence from the office at the completion of our coaching program together, a decision she felt good about and which her husband and children supported. And when she checked in with her family doctor she was delighted to find that her blood pressure was back to normal.

The Sequel trap

Backstory problem

The number one problem in sequel writing is, “How much of the first novel do you need to retell?” The sequel must be written for three groups of readers. In my case, the first to please are the ardent fans who absolutely loved The Underling, memorized every nuance and have named their first-born after their favourite character.

Next are those who enjoyed warm fuzzies on reading The Underling five years ago, but time has diminished the details. (“Was there a girl and some gold?”)

Finally comes the new reader who just returned from seven years in Antarctica studying dystopian aspects of penguin society, and has stumbled upon the second novel, The Incrementalist, as their first experience with your work.

How do you prepare a feast that will satisfy them all? Too much backstory is boring for your devotees. Too little backstory leaves the new reader confused about personalities and plot threads.

Rightly or wrongly, I opted for the “99 to 1 solution.” Ninety-nine per

cent new material, one per cent brief review of the essentials. The main character Frances McFadden earns $125 a month as a secretary at the Bank of Canada, yet she lives in an apartment that rents for $170 a month?

Explanation required. If Paul Roderick is her love interest and Wilbur Grace is her mentor, and Huey Foo is her business associate, well, how did a bank clerk bump into such a motley crew?

Artistic growth problem

The sequel writer has other demons to grapple with. Just as any first experience such as baking an angel food cake or changing a diaper or sharing love should provide direction for subsequent, improved experiences, a writer hopes to grow from earlier efforts. While the reader might be calling for more of the same, an internal voice is beckoning the writer to new horizons. So it becomes a balancing act that reflects the best of the old, but provides scope for untrod paths.

Readers who liked The Underling want more of Frances McFadden, the harried secretary at the Bank of Canada. They do not necessarily want more of Ian McKercher (a humbling fact). They mentioned it to me so that I can put in a word if I bump into Frances in the produce aisle at McKeen’s.

The Expectation problem

You have a delicious serving of Aunt Mabel’s peach cobbler and you want more! You anticipate that the second serving will be just as good. With my

first novel, there was zero expectation that I could string three words together coherently. I had no identity as a writer of fiction. Many friends and neighbours made the “pity purchase.” The “he came to Emma’s ballet recital, I guess we have to buy his book” purchase. One acquaintance reluctantly confessed, “I read your book… and… it was….good.” (tonal subtext: “Knowing you as I do, how is that possible?”)

I felt prompted to apologise for not meeting his expectations.

Now, suddenly, where there was no standard at all, the bar has been ratcheted to the eaves. Having completely dissipated all my creative verve, dug deep, emptied the cupboard, exhausted every possible cliché, now readers want new material? Better material?

What if that was all there is?

Rightly or wrongly, I took the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach to the sequel and just quietly carried on writing another 43 chapters of the same novel. Don’t tell anyone.

It is heartening to have people rave over your first novel. But these five seconds of good cheer evaporate when the earnest fan exclaims, “When’s the sequel coming out?”

Writing, publishing and marketing a novel have all the attributes of an Ironman competition. The author stumbles across the finish line, exhausted, wishing only to sleep for 100 years. What the enthusiastic reader wants (quickly) is “more of the same, but different.”

Writing a sequel should be easy, right? You’re blooded. You’ve established a nest of characters in a familiar setting. You’ve mastered plot development and an ironic tone of voice. Ah, but reflect for a moment on your own experiences with second efforts.

Second child? Second marriage?

Second career? There were similarities, but what likely stands out in your memory are the differences.

I would go so far as to claim that any piece of art is unique and cannot be adequately defined by its position in a sequence. So, there is no such thing as a second novel. Each novel is a new first.

Although first published in 1997, Christophe Blain and Elisabeth Brami’s simple story about differences, neighbours and walls is quite relevant today.

This story is an allegory of friendship, growth and how these things can support one another. It is also a sweet, beautiful book that can be enjoyed by even the earliest of readers.

The Sunnyside Branch of the Ottawa Public Library will be closed over two periods this spring and early summer for renovations. The first closure is from Monday, May 8 to Thursday, May 18; the branch will reopen on Friday, May 19. We will be closed again in late June to complete the renovations for which specific dates have not yet been confirmed. Book drops will be open during these periods so customers can continue to return library materials at Sunnyside.

Sunnyside is one of the top 10

branches in the Ottawa Public Library system by virtue of having a high number of physical library items, on average 1,000 a day, being checked out and an average 650 to 700 customers visiting daily! As our popularity increases, we are working on ways to keep up with demand and best serve all library customers. To do this, the Library will be moving to a single point of service model. Over the past five years, this model has been adopted by the nearly all of the 33 library branches in Ottawa.

Here’s what you can expect from this service:

• With a single point of service on each f loor customers will no longer need to decide which of our two desks to go to for answers. Gone will be the long Cards and Accounts desk that separates library employees from customers. Instead, we will be focusing on the customer as our service point.

• New accessible shelving and kiosks for check out of library materials means that all of our customers will move more easily in the branch and be able to access our collection.

• We are refreshing our collection to ensure that it is appealing, useful and interesting to our customers. This means that outdated materials, materials that are no longer of interest or in demand, duplicates and worn or damaged copies will be removed.

Most items removed from our collection go to the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association (FOPLA), who in turn have wonderful sales that earn funds for the Library.

• A sor ting mach ine will be installed to do the repetitive work of checking in books, which will allow employees to be on the floor helping customers, offering more programs in the branch and working more outside of the branch in the community.

Gloria! A festival of flowers

You can never get too many flowers on your birthday, which is why we at Christ Church Cathedral Ottawa are organizing Gloria! A Festival of Flowers, to be our sesquicentennial gift to the people of Ottawa. The church will be ablaze with more than 10,000 blooms in the fiery colours of Pentecost from June 2 to 4.

Flower festivals are regular features of churches in Great Britain; many places hold one annually. Salisbury Cathedral’s festival takes more than 500 volunteers to create. (We’re only about 475 volunteers short).

The Cathedral has held a flower festival before, in the early 1980s, and the idea of doing another one has been brewing for a few years. Somehow the time was never right until we started looking for a gift to mark the sesquicentennial of confederation. There was even a ready-made occasion: this year, Pentecost and Doors Open fall on the same weekend, June 2 – 4.

Doors Open is a weekend when historically and culturally interesting buildings all around the capital can be visited for free. Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended in tongues of fire, allowing the disciples to preach the Gospel so everyone could understand, is an occasion Dean Shane Parker has been working to elevate to the same level as the other great feasts.

It is also when Bishop John Chapman holds the diocese’s annual confirmation service in the Cathedral.

Adding a festival of flowers in the colours of the flames of the tongues of fire will transform this important day in the Cathedral’s year into an opportunity to celebrate with the people of Ottawa and Gatineau.

So what’s in store on these very special three days? (Technically, Doors Open Ottawa runs just Saturday and Sunday, but we’ve added Friday, from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, we’re open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.)

First, the flowers. We are very fortunate that three other parishes accepted our invitation to participate in this event. Flower arrangers from St. James Manotick will be decorating the pillars, Christ Church Bell’s Corners is in charge of the lobby, and St. Aiden’s have signed on to create the decorations for the centre aisle.

Members of the Cathedral will look after the chancel (if you’d like to join in, please contact coutts@magma.ca).

Ah, but there’s more! As is usual for Doors Open, there will be tour guides to show you around the church, giving you a wonderful opportunity to learn more about our 185-year-old parish and our 144-year-old building. The tours will take you through the nave and chancel then proceed to the crypt, to see the columbarium and visit special displays of some of the Cathedral’s magnificent vestments and hangings, as well as memorabilia of the Royal Family.

If you’re looking for refreshment after your tour, Cathedral Women will be running a tearoom and boutique in the Great Hall.

Two musical performances are scheduled for Saturday, June 3: The Nepean Songsters will perform at 11 a.m. and the Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces String Ensemble will perform at 2 p.m.

Big Soul – moving forward together Fourth Avenue Baptist Church will host a concert on May 13 at 7:30 p.m.

Joining the choir will be a new and fresh voice on the Ottawa jazz and gospel music scene, Michael Curtis Hanna from Detroit, the progeny of the late Sir Roland Hanna, world acclaimed pianist and composer. 1980 and was hailed “a genuine musician” by Isaac Stern.

Since then, he has played in over 40 countries, in venues including the Lincoln Center in New York City, Salle Pleyel in Paris, the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Sydney Opera House and Tokyo’s Suntory Hall.

Dang was born in Hanoi but raised in the country during the Vietnam War and was introduced to the piano initially through the works of Chopin, the only composer whose works were locally available. He was, at the age of 19, admitted to the Moscow Conservatory after being discovered by a touring Russian pianist.

Among his major early distinctions was the occasion when the great Sviatoslav Richter chose Dang to replace him for a solo appearance in Japan.

Dang settled in Japan following his 1980 competition win and eventually relocated to Montreal, his official city of residence to this day.

In addition to his busy international performing career, Dang is in high demand as a teacher, collaborative pianist and juror, adjudicating at the most important international piano competitions around the world each year.

Dang Thai Son has performed as a soloist with orchestras including the St. Petersburg, BBC and Moscow

Philharmonic orchestras, the Orchestres Symphoniques de Montreal and Paris, the Vienna, Zurich and Royal Swedish chamber orchestras, and the Virtuosi of Moscow, appearing with conductors including Neville Marriner and Pinchas Zukerman.

He has further collaborated with luminaries such as Yo Yo Ma, Seiji Ozawa, Kathleen Battle, Mstislav Rostropovich, Murray Perahia and Vladimir Ashkenazy, and recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, CBS Sony, Analekta and Victor JVC. Dang’s June MPRS program includes works by Chopin (Prelude in C-sharp minor, Op.45; Scherzo No. 3 in C-sharp minor, Op.39), Liszt (‘Les Cloches de Genève’ from Années de pèlerinage I, S.160/9; Réminiscences de Norma, S.394) and Schubert (Sonata No. 21 in B-flat major, D.960) This is a concert serious piano lovers will not want to miss. Sex, violence, chamber music: Seventeen Voyces presents Venus & Adonis Seventeen Voyces, Ottawa’s longest established chamber choir, is ending its 20th season with John Blow’s Venus & Adonis. The show will run for two nights, May 26 and 27, at Southminster United Church.

The choir will feature soprano Bronwyn Thies-Thompson as Venus, Joel Allison as Adonis and countertenor Ryan Patrick McDonald as Cupid. Seventeen Voyces will also be joined by The Ottawa Baroque Consort and Makin’ Moves Children’s Dance Theatre.

Venus & Adonis was written and composed around 1683. It is considered the earliest known English opera and serves as the precursor to Henry Purcell’s better-known Dido & Aenaes. Purcell mentored under Blow for much of his career as a baroque composer.

Seventeen Voyces’ founder and director Kevin Reeves chose Venus & Adonis because of its close relation to Purcell’s work, which has been performed many times in recent years. “The musical language is very similar, and even though it may not have the same dramatic thrust as Purcell’s opera, it is just as heartachingly tragic.”

While the choir has performed excerpts from Venus & Adonis, Reeves believes it’s never been performed in full in Ottawa.

The mini-opera, sometimes referred to as a masque, tells the story of Venus, who falls in love with a young hunter after she is pierced by one of her son Cupid’s arrows. At the sounding of the horn, Adonis, her beloved hunts-

“How can one go wrong with an early baroque opera containing sex and violence?” asks Reeves. “Con-

veniently, Cupid is on hand to give Venus relationship advice and to teach spelling to the younger cupids, represented by our guest ballerinas from Makin’ Moves.”

The chamber choir, now celebrating its 20th year, has made a name for itself by never shying away from multidisciplinary and multimedia presentations.

Each year, they put on a choral accompaniment of a classic silent film. In February, Seventeen Voyces paired excerpts from Handel’s oratorio “Israel in Egypt” with Cecil B. DeMille’s 1923 epic The Ten Commandments.

Venus & Adonis will be no exception to the choir’s rule of unique presentations. The Ottawa Baroque Consort, a period orchestra normally composed only of strings and a harpsichord, will be augmented for the evening with baroque recorders and a theorbo, which Reeves describes as “a lute on steroids.”

The group will be joined by dancers from Makin’ Moves, a children’s dance studio on Sunnyside Avenue. To round off the evening, Andrew Ager, the accompanist for Seventeen Voyces, will be premiering a brand new composition.

Seven-year-old Clea is learning to navigate the turbulent waters of French (and English) in Canada.

of walking my grandchildren home from school in both the French and the English languages is that some of the most gifted, most bilingual people in Canada are Franco-Ontarians and especially those from Ottawa. I’ve come to the conclusion that our school system is very good. My children never attended anything but First Avenue and Hopewell, then Glebe, but when we went to France for a year, they both did very well in the French system. I’m not sure French school kids coming to Canada for a year could fit in so seamlessly as Emma and Julian did in our little French village.

The year we spent in France found my son Julian lumbered with a very tough year, the grade just before the

Lycée, which determines who will go forward to that august level and who won’t. It was just a little country school and many students didn’t move on, but Julian attained the grades needed. I’m proud to say you can hear his voice to this day on any OC Transpo bus, as it was his voice chosen to announce each coming stop in French and English.

Julian’s French is good enough that Clea will deign to speak to her uncle in French in spite of the fact that he didn’t attend St. Francois, which I figure is the ultimate compliment, but not one I’m likely to achieve any time soon.

Clea is only seven but she is already a determined French language critic.

She doesn’t like me speaking French to her. Apparently, I don’t speak as they do at her school, St. Francois, and therefore it would be best if we stuck with English. She is not alone with standards. One day walking home from school with the children I heard a schoolmate of Felix’s accuse him of not speaking French well. This upset him and we had a bit of debate about what speaking well was. How was Felix supposed to sound? Like someone from France? Welcome to the francophone world.

When my future son-in-law, Sebastien, asked for my daughter’s hand in marriage, I said I couldn’t imagine a better son-in-law but I did have one request.

We always speak French together. A promise Sebastien has kept and en plus, has never complained or corrected my accent or grammar, something I much appreciate because it can wobble between Acadie and Ottawa, depending on what I’m talking about.

English-language speakers don’t have this prickliness around their language. Everyone just mucks in and where the verb tenses, adjectives and accents land is as varied as the speaker. No one moves to London, U.K. because they want to talk like a Londoner, but people do move to Paris because they want to be surrounded by the sound of French as it is spoken in Paris. Sometimes the move is less dramatic but I have relatives who belong to a particular parish because they like

the way the congregation speaks there.

If I can’t explain to my seven-yearold granddaughter that my French is okay and so is hers, I doubt that I can explain to you. It’s a complex stew. Home for me has always been the sound of both French and English.

My mother being a Londoner and my father Acadian, I feel at home in both languages, but being at home in the French language is more difficult. Part of it is because French is a minority language outside of Quebec and in the ROC [Rest of Canada] you are always conscious that the other person may not speak or understand what you say in French. So you’re always listening and asking yourself, should I switch to English? Am I being rude? And if you listen to that little voice all the time, you almost never speak French because English is so dominant and there is always someone who feels more comfortable in that language.

I have a cousin who began spelling his name Doucette so that it would sound English. One of the benefits of this switch is now when he speaks French, he’s told with surprise, “your French is good,” which is a genuine compliment, not a qualified one.

For there are always two measures behind the popular phrase, “your French is good”: one for an anglophone and one for a francophone.

When a francophone says to a francophone (who lives outside of Quebec), “your French is good,” it doesn’t mean it’s good. It means that for someone who has grown up in an Anglophone environment, it’s “not bad.”

I was having a hard time supporting my back in my early twenties. I was well acquainted with daily back pain due to severe scoliosis, which offered me very little sleep, usually with heavy medication. I wore a corset with metal bars so I could survive sitting during university lectures. The guard helped me get through the day, but my spine was getting weaker and a wheelchair journey was on the horizon. I tried to be strong, often hiding the pain, as it was not cool for a young woman to “live like an old lady.”

Many of us are not strangers to some form of pain, and back pain is one of the most common. It is not always evident what to do about it, even after a medical diagnosis. We try to rest, use painkillers and do physiotherapy, a little bit of something, but it’s not enough to make a big change. When pain becomes chronic and severe enough, it turns your life upside down. How do I know? Because I have been there.

I was introduced to yoga by chance, right here in the Glebe. Even though initially my back was not willing to be challenged, I was excited and hopeful for a change. I knew I was on the right track after a few weeks of experimentation. The pain did not go away, but it felt different. I could distinguish qualities of sensation and I could actually feel areas of the body I had had no access to before.

I was learning to pay attention and to stay open to the experience.

I thought that even if the pain

remained, there was an exciting world out there to be discovered.

This careful observation and holding space for things to come up and to be felt proved not only exciting but also useful in changing the experience of my body. It felt as if my back was teaching me where to take it to free it from its shackles.

I was willing to work outside the box. I created new strategies; I let them go; I worked one angle, then changed it, adopting new things that worked. I decided to study anatomy, Chinese medicine and acupuncture.

I picked the brains of body workers I worked with. Then I would go back and experiment in my body world … and listen some more.

My back responded, working with me as a team. I could gradually make shifts and changes. I was no longer fighting the pain. I invited my back to the table to work with me. I offered it various options and it gave me feedback and provided boundaries.

It actually became a fun, bilateral coaching project!

I had to learn to work gently, giving my body some space to breathe by opening and softening. Then, gradually enticing the weak links to work up a little sweat. Initially, I did most of the work on the floor, keeping my back stable, while all the support systems had to learn how to engage in a new way. I found that working in diagonal lines was very efficient in building my own corset while maintaining length and space in the spine.

always giving plenty of opportunity to create traction. I fell in love with the yoga wall; you can hang from it in various configurations and use it for building stability once the body foundations have shifted.

It took a while to turn the ship around, but I am now mostly free of pain. It was a no-brainer to share what I have learned with others. I became a yoga teacher to keep learning more and to help other people find their way to a better body vehicle. How? Through deep listening and learning ways to create space, stability and fluidity. Yoga, practised intelligently, can offer great tools to achieve just that.

Freeing my body from its restrictions, my own and those of others, became an obsession. I often walk through the Glebe neighbourhood and

All I want to say is: make a few changes, work a little; some of the problems can be reversed or corrected and you can take deeper, easier breaths.

Learn and listen. Yep, it takes a bit of time… so what?! It took some years for me to gradually get my life back, but it was worth it! Now, instead of a wheelchair stroll, I mountain bike on funky trails, lift heavy weights, hike some amazing mountains and sit comfortably economy class on a plane going to Asia. I am no longer in my twenties – a few years back I celebrated my 50th birthday. My back has never felt better! Perhaps yours can feel much better too.

Residents of Old Ottawa East welcome the return May 6 of the Main Farmers’ Market to its home on Main Street.

After two years at the Museum of Nature, the Main Farmers’ Market has returned home to the heart of its community, where it all began: Main Street.

With the construction and rehabilitation of Main Street concluded, the Market opened its stalls on May 6, 2017 in the parking lot next to The

Green Door Restaurant, across from St. Paul’s University. Vendors and the entire market team are looking forward to a season filled with great food and fellowship in the heart of Old Ottawa East.

The market will run every Saturday, from May 6 to October 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

When my grandmother suffered a stroke decades ago, medical advice at the time warned us she would not talk or walk again. I recently learned how much the prognosis for stroke victims has changed since those days long ago.

Dr. Dale Corbett, CEO of the Canadian Partnership for Stroke Recovery, the leading research partnership in the world focused on stroke recovery, spoke at the Chartwell Lord Lansdowne Retirement Residence on April 6. The free talk outlined promising discoveries and therapies that can help over 400,000 Canadians recovering from stroke. Canada is a world leader in stroke research and recovery.

Dr. Corbett brought current insights into stroke prevention, acute care and stroke recovery. Among other things

he told of how the brain repairs itself after a stroke. Brain-mapping techniques help make rehabilitation therapies more effective. Exercise, which is important for recovery, can be tailor made for individuals. Robotic devices, iPads and smart phones extend the work of physical therapists.

Stem-cell research is opening further exciting possibilities for repairing stroke damage.

When the winter season takes up nearly half the year in Ottawa, most of us are more than ready to welcome spring by the time it finally rolls around. We experience a profound sense of renewal as the snow melts, the days get warmer and brighter, and beautiful, multi-coloured flowers bloom. Everything feels fresh and new and ripe with possibilities. We feel invigorated and ready to take on new challenges. At least, that is how many of us feel when we aren’t plagued by seasonal allergies, otherwise known as hay fever.

The Canadian Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Foundation estimates that between 20 and 25 per cent of Canadians suffer from seasonal allergies. This means that, over the course of the year, more than seven million Canadians are laid low by the symptoms of seasonal allergies, which can include runny, watery, itchy eyes; sneezing and coughing attacks; dark circles under the eyes that don’t go away with sleep; a sore, irritated throat; fatigue; headache and a host of other unpleasant symptoms.

The immune system is a complex and fascinating entity. With a wisdom forged over the millennia of human evolution, the immune system must differentiate between cells that are harmful and those that are healthy.

The immune system then goes to work seeking out the harmful cells, enveloping them and breaking them down

be reacting to them. The optimist in me interprets this to mean that, with adequate systemic balancing, there is genuine hope for allergy sufferers.

So what can we do to support our bodies through seasonal allergies?

Natural antihistamines

When our bodies come into contact with an allergen, such as pollen, ragweed or dust mites, it makes chemicals called histamines that are largely responsible for the unpleasant symptoms that we associate with seasonal allergies.

Antihistamines, as their name might suggest, reduce or block histamines thereby reducing or alleviating allergy symptoms.

While many seasonal allergy suffers are well versed in their pharmaceutical antihistamine options, did you know that there are natural antihistamines, such as quercetin, bromelain and Vitamin C? Gay men experience gaps in health care

• Develop training and education for medical professionals and people working in the health care system in Eastern Ontario; and • Work with a community advisory group to ensure research and program development is relevant and meaningful.

The researcher will be looking into what it will take to meet gay men’s health needs in our area.

Once established, we envision this position becoming a hub for a network of centres of excellence in gay men’s health across Ontario. Teaching materials for medical school curriculums and continuing education courses will also be developed.

Gay men’s health – the situation

We know little about it; however, we do know these few facts from surveys and health records: • 30 per cent of gay men in Ottawa report symptoms of depression as compared to 10 per cent in the general population.

• Gay men are at increased risk of developing anal cancer.

• Their rate of HIV infection has not dropped in Ottawa in more than 10 years, although the rate has dropped for the general population.

• Gay men in Ottawa are 10 times more likely to have hepatitis B or C than the general population.

• The health care gay men receive fails to incorporate health concerns specific to gay men.

• Most physicians say they want training in gay men’s health, but there is little available.

How do I know all of this? I was invited to a focus group on gay men’s health care about two years ago as part of a research study. Participants spoke of their struggles to access health care, such as not feeling comfortable to speak to their family physician about their needs. For others, when they spoke up, their physician was uncomfortable or unable to help.

I made a suggestion at the end of the session to establish an endowed research chair in gay men’s health so that research could be undertaken to understand why gay men and their care providers are struggling, why public health efforts are failing them and what can be done about it. A group of health-care-interested gay men met in the fall of 2015 and began working on a proposal for a research chair at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

We met with executives of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation, The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and interested physicians to discuss it. The head of the communicable diseases unit Dr. Jonathan Angel, mental health services Dr. Katharine Gillis and urology services Dr. J. Stuart Oake endorsed the proposal, which received unanimous and wholehearted support from the hospital’s committees and board.

The purposes of the chair are to: • Strive to improve the health of gay men and their interaction with the health care system through research, clinical program development, and community engagement; • Encourage collaboration on gay men’s health issues across health disciplines;

The Ottawa Hospital Foundation was given the task in October 2016 of raising funds over the next three years to establish the chair. Although donations are welcome at all levels, for this to work we need donors who can pledge $50,000 or more per year for five years. Alternatively, a donor of $1 million is entitled to name the chair – a lovely legacy. Donations at all levels can be made to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation, which will issue charitable tax receipts.

Reckless

The course in “Writing Your Memoirs,” offered at Abbotsford House and taught by Anne Le Dressay, has brought out some wonderful stories by local residents. The following memoir

by Cheryl Green is one. It takes place in southeast England.

Martin Mill is a tiny railway station in the middle of nowhere. The lady at the tourist information had said it was about a two-mile walk to St. Margaret’s Bay, which I particularly wanted to visit. Miriam Margolyes, a celebrated British actress now in her seventies, had a bungalow there on the cliff tops and Noel Coward had lived there for a few years. A blue plaque marks the house.

Anyway, what the tourist office lady had actually said was, “Better take the bus love, it’d be quicker.” But I preferred the train, just a 15-minute ride through the lush, undulating countryside. Small, arable fields enclosed by hedges of hawthorn, elder, blackthorn and hazel. I walked for about half an hour along a narrow country lane of hills and valleys, a cloudless sky, a simmering hot day. No sign of any settlement let alone a glimpse of the sea. I decided to cut my losses, turn left and head back to Deal, the small Georgian town where I was renting a terraced cottage.

There was a track of sorts, narrow and stony with large chunks of chalk and flint for my flip-flopped feet to navigate but I ploughed on, thankful

for the odd tree providing welcome shade. The track petered out, crossing fields of stubble. I tasted the blackberries and sloes, the bitter flavour hadn’t changed but I was reminded of the delicious sloe gin that Charles used to make; a bluey-purple liqueur to be sipped beside a log fire at Christmas.

I trudged along keeping the sun at my back or left shoulder to stay on course, thinking I could make the estimated seven miles back, if I didn’t sprain my ankle first, with only the odd crow or seagull to hear my cries.

And I knew if I could make it halfway to the Zetland Arms, a delightful

Shepherd Neame pub, there was a decent paved flat coastal path from there and I looked forward to a half pint of cider at a trestle table overlooking the shingle beach.

The path also led past two Tudor castles, shaped like Tudor roses, built

by Henry VIII. Walmer Castle, the first one that I would pass, was occupied by Nelson for 23 years. The Deal castle was a Tudor artillery base. The whole area is steeped in history. This southeastern corner of England was always threatened by invading armies.

A few miles to the south the imposing fortification of Dover castle perched on the white cliffs. This castle, dating

from the 11th century, was the one that Hitler had envisaged as his headquarters during the Second World War. Shells were to be directed to flatten the town and leave the castle untouched.

The town of Deal is not without its share of pretty notorious history either, much of it connected to smuggling. Contraband, including bolts of cloth, playing cards and tobacco were freely imported from the continent, only 23 miles distant at the closest point and visible on clear days. Prime Minister William Pitt sent in troops to destroy the town’s boats in 1785 and smugglers were deported to Tasmania following later confrontations, at which time Deal was described as “a most villainous place” and “full of filthy looking people.” Today the town is charming, with colourful street planters, window boxes and polished brass doorknockers, and has regular bandstand concerts and antique markets during the summer months.

Musing on all of this, I finally made it back to the cottage after a pretty shattering afternoon. Exhausting and reckless, probably. Enjoyable, totally.

I went to St. Margaret’s Bay later in the week. A friend visited from London with his car. Descending into the bay from the top of the cliffs, we read the warnings not to go too close to the cliffs, which regularly crumble, or to go round the headlands on either side of the bay and risk being cut off by the tide. Very reckless….

The Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) will be opening a new elementary school in 2017 for families in the Glebe, Sandy Hill, Centretown, Old Ottawa South and Old Ottawa East. The new French Catholic elementary school will accommodate up to 250 students from junior kindergarten to Grade 6. The CECCE is also looking to open a daycare in the same building for the coming school year.

The new Finnish-inspired elementary school will have a global outlook and will offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme.

CECCE director of education, Réjean Sirois, believes that this approach will appeal to many families. “Parents will have the opportunity to choose a school whose pedagogy is based on the latest developments in the field of education. Teaching periods will be shorter and will alternate with breaks

for physical and outdoor activity.

Several additional projects will tie in with the sustainable development and green school values that are extremely important to the CECCE. I want to emphasize that parents will be actively involved in their children’s academic life and will collaborate in developing each student’s full potential.”

Students will be housed in a temporary location at 88 Main Street near Saint Paul University at the beginning of the 2017 school year while Ashcroft Homes completes work on the permanent site in the heritage building at 330 Gilmour Street in time for the 2018 school year. “Over the longer term, this modern urban building will cater to an active community that cares about the environment and sustainable development. Students will enjoy safe access to a rooftop schoolyard and green spaces,” said project

GCA partners with Old Ottawa South for first-ever bike rodeo

Our neighbours on the Old Ottawa South Community Association (OSCA) have been kind enough to invite Glebe residents of all ages and abilities to join them for the inaugural Capital Spokes Bike Rodeo in Windsor Park on June 11. The event will run from 10 a.m. to noon and will feature all varieties of bike-related fun.

The concept for the event is quite clever, really. Groups of cyclists will gather at rally points in various central neighbourhoods including the Glebe, and will ride to the event at Windsor Park en masse. For those of us in the Glebe, the rally point will be Glebe Memorial Park on Glendale Avenue. Any interested cyclists will meet there at 9:15 on the morning of June 11, and then try out some of the Glebe Neighbourhood Cycling routes on our way to Windsor Park.

Once there, the City’s Safer Roads Program will be providing instruction for kids and adults on bike safety and riding skills.

Younger cyclists will have an opportunity to demonstrate some of their know-how in obstacle courses specially designed to improve their skills. Meanwhile the tennis courts will be turned into fenced-in safety corrals where riders can practise turns, bike balance and hand signals. OSCA is particularly keen to have parents participate with their kids and hopefully take away tips that

will help them when riding with their kids.

In addition to the bike people on site, the Ottawa Police will be coming to demonstrate how their new one-meter sonar device works for enforcing the one-metre cycling law and the Ottawa Paramedic Service will be there to give out medical data carriers for kids to put on helmets. Finally, the always-popular firefighters will show off their trucks as only they can and at the same time provide tips on how cyclists should behave around these large vehicles. And as always, Safer Roads Ottawa will be armed with reams of safe cycling gear to distribute (arm bands, ankle straps, bells and lights).

So what can you do to be part of this exciting event? First, you can bike over to Glendale Park on June 11 to join the big ride to Old Ottawa South. Nobody wants to be bullied

Nobody wants to be bullied, and least of all our children who are most vulnerable. How can we help children to become empowered, rather than victims, if and when a bully strikes?

The following six steps can educate and prepare children for social challenges they may encounter: 1. Understanding boundaries

The first step in safeguarding a child from being bullied is to clarify how to establish personal boundaries. These include the limits we maintain to protect ourselves physically, emotionally and mentally. Being able to say “no” without guilt, to express oneself when uncomfortable with a situation, to ensure others’ needs are not prioritized over one’s own, to make independent decisions, to balance giving and receiving, and to follow one’s conscience rather than please others, are qualities that reflect healthy boundaries. Children who know how to set boundaries early in life learn to value and respect their individuality and not be defined by others.

2. Profiling the bully

Once a child is fully aware of rights and boundaries, s/he will more easily recognize the characteristics of a bully. Bullying can be extremely subtle, which is even more of a reason for children to practice their personal boundaries and identify someone who has crossed the line, made them feel uncomfortable or infringed on their personal space. A bully exhibits aggressive behaviour to intentionally abuse someone emotionally, physically, verbally or psychologically. The bully usually seeks easy targets, those that reflect an imbalance of power.

Today, cyber bullying through technologies such as emails, cell phones and social networking sites is preva-

lent. For this reason, parents must be extra vigilant as their children are exposed to social media.

3. Communicating actively

Teach children to seek adult intervention or guidance without hesitating if they feel bullied or threatened.

Encourage children to use their voices and act on behalf of others being bullied, again by alerting and seeking help from adults. Communication is a powerful tool and defense against being bullied. Children are well armed when they have a confident voice along with the ability to communicate and express their needs. Introduce children to vocabulary and references that connect them to their inner feelings and support honest self-expression.

A strong obstacle to self-expression is the fear of being judged by others.

There is always an element of risk in communication, but far more is gained than lost. By accepting our humanness and the fact that we all make mistakes, we experience greater freedom, which is reflected in our ability to communicate with confidence and transparency.

It is also helpful for parents to share with their children how they dealt constructively with challenging situations socially or at work.

5. Practicing compassion

Adults tend to overlook the practice of compassion in guiding children to protect themselves against bullies.

Feeling compassion for an aggressor can be misconstrued as weakness.

On the contrary, by recognizing that bullies do not act from a position of strength but rather from an unhealthy state of mind can deflate the image, influence and power of the bully. There are many profiles of bullies; they can be popular, in a position of authority and the list goes on. Yet, according to a 2007 study carried out by Brown

University that analyzed responses from a parent survey, researchers found that individuals classified as bullies were more than twice as likely to experience depression, anxiety, and attention deficit disorder. Compassion for others is always empowering and brings our sense of humanity to the forefront, the very quality lacking in the bully, a quality we ourselves never want to lose.

6. Acting from a position of strength

As children become grounded in their own values and self-worth, they will act from a position of inner strength, discovering for themselves what Anna Freud experienced: “I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence, but it comes from within. It is there all the time.”

4. Building social skills, emotional intelligence and conflict resolution skills

Children are expected to manage their emotions, read others’ emotions, engage appropriately with peers and practice conflict resolution skills, often without much coaching or support. These skills, like any others, need to be cultivated. Children with advanced social skills, emotional intelligence and conflict resolution skills have an advantage in identifying and protecting themselves against individuals trying to exert a negative influence on them.

Sandy Bulchak will retire from Good Morning Creative Arts and Preschool in June.

Good Morning Creative Arts and Preschool will bid a fond farewell in June to beloved teacher Sandy Bulchak who is retiring after 12 years with the centre. Sandy came to Good Morning after a career in the arts. She trained as a dancer and teacher at the National Ballet School and York University, and worked as a performer, writer and choreographer. She also founded Wonderstruck, an integrated arts program for young children.

Good Morning children, parents and staff will sorely miss Sandy’s dynamic presence. As we prepare to send Sandy off to her well-deserved retirement, she has a few words of farewell to share: Goodbye-ish

I was asked recently if I could be interviewed for a little piece in the Glebe Report; maybe share a bit about my impending early retirement and include some photos of my time here at Good Morning Creative Arts and Preschool. I offered instead to write a bit of a wrap up, a thank you and a goodbye.

I realize now that this is easier said than done. It is hard to wrap up 3,600 days in 500 hundred words or less, and even more difficult to capture in words the moments that rendered me speechless.

I was hired in September 2005 to share my creative arts background on a short-term basis while Karen Cam-

eron was on maternity leave. That was 12 years ago, an entire lifetime for Karen’s daughter Molly and more than half a lifetime ago for my own nowgrown-up girls. But how I got here is less important than why I have stayed.

What I found here in the basement of 174 First Avenue was a caring community, a place to share what I hold dearest, creativity, with the people I adore the most, children. I’ve never really thought of it as a job; it is a place I go to play, create, share, sing, dance, explore and get messy.

Preschoolers are magical creatures and I have learned as much as I have taught. I have learned: that it is more fun to paint with a brush in both hands; that what looks like sun pouring through a window in a painting could just as easily be Rapunzel’s hair; that you can never make enough “ice cubes” out of play dough; that to build a Duplo structure taller than you is indeed an amazing feat; that pickles with hummus-covered squishy bread is a terrific snack; that hugs do make it all better; that there is no end to the things that you can teach to the tune of “The Farmer in the Dell;” that collectively teaching a snowflake to land softly never gets old; and that whether you are dealing with life lessons or mark-making, “ish” is a brilliant concept.

And it is “ish-ly” that I say goodbye.

That is to say, I will not be completely gone. I am moving on with my own creative endeavours. I will finish my two plays that have waited patiently for the attention they deserve. I will travel with my husband, camera inhand, to places I have only dreamed of visiting. I plan to volunteer as a reader at CHEO and I hope to share my Doula training with families I have built relationships with as well as new Canadian families. But I will never leave my Good Morning family behind. I will drop in often and supply-teach when needed.

I am grateful for all of the families I have had the pleasure of working with over the past 12 years. I know there is no greater gift than parenthood, so I thank you again for sharing your little ones with me. And to fellow staff members past and present: Liane, Ernest, Penny, Gerrian, Sarah, Melanie and Karen, thanks for the memories.

Other Good Morning news

The centre held its annual vernissage on May 11 during which the entire building at 174 First Avenue was transformed into the biggest and best (we’re sure!) children’s art show in Ottawa. Artwork created by Good Morning children from preschool to Grade 6 was on display for their families and the public to enjoy. Proceeds from the sale represent the centre’s biggest fundraiser of the year and the event is always an exciting social occasion for Good Morning families, especially for the children.

Looking forward to the summer months and beyond, there are still spaces available in our summer camps for three- to six-year-olds and registration is open for our after-school programs for kindergarten and school-aged children for the 2017 – 2018 year. More information can be found at GMCAPS. com.

It’s a cruel, cruel summer

School this year started on a warm September day, The class was set up for learning and play.

The older class was made up of kids who already knew the scene, As to GCNS they had already been.

They ran in – happy to be back at school, Thrilled to show their teachers what was toddler-cool.

The younger class was composed of a group of new girls and boys, Shy and curious about all the new toys.

Some ran into the room without any fears, Others wouldn’t leave their parents without a bucket of tears.

Though eventually all the kids learned to love the place, And their clingy, teary, parents learned to give them some space!

They painted and did crafts and learned more than one great song, And were often sad at the end of the day to say “so long.”

Guests came by teaching music, drumming and dance, And the kids put on plays worthy of Guildenstern and Rosencrantz.

Special visitors included a vet, a dentist and even a member of the police force, To complement the every day fun and learning, which was just as special, of course.

There were parties at Halloween and Christmas and soon this spring, There will be an exciting event, known as the Spring Fling*.

Then Mother’s Day tea, Father’s Day drop-in and graduation, Before they are forced to leave for summer vacation.

I am not sure how other parents plan to break the vacation news, But I know my toddler will be sad, no matter what method I choose.

I am not trying to sound too gushy and sappy, But GCNS makes her so happy.

So thank you to the teachers for all of the caring and love and learning and fun, If only school could be this great for everyone!

Good Morning is a cooperative, parent-run organization that offers preschool programs for two- and three-year-olds, low-ratio afternoon programs for kids ages 3 – 5, and after-school art classes for children in JK to Grade 6.

*Please come check out the Spring Fling, Saturday, May 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the Glebe Community Centre. There will be music, crafts, games a bouncy castle, animal balloons, food and more!

Glebe Collegiate tackles U.N. Sustainable Development Goals

We should never trivialize or ignore sustainability. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015 are crucial, but are generally unknown and unheard of. This is why it is so important to inform everyone about the role they can play in helping to ensure that the SDGs secure our collective future.

The SDGs focus our efforts on some of the most serious threats to our wellbeing today and tomorrow. There are 17 different goals, highlighting the need to strengthen universal peace and freedom, eradicate poverty, integrate gender equality into all policies and practices, protect our imperilled environment and acknowledge the need for economic growth and innovation.

Participants in the Specialist High School Major Program (SHSM) at Glebe Collegiate are ready and determined to tackle these 17 goals. They organized a week-long awareness campaign. The SHSM program allows high school students to receive a “major” with their diploma, and Glebe Collegiate’s program focuses on not-for-profit studies. With that focus, Glebe’s students have enthusiastically taken up the SDGs. Over the course of the week, each day was be devoted to one of the five “P” pillars of the SDGs: People, Peace, Planet, Prosperity and Partnership.

First up was “People” on May 8.

eliminating world hunger, promoting good health and wellbeing, enabling quality education for all, championing gender equality and providing clean water and sanitation. On this first day, an informative assembly offered an overview for students of what the week would entail. It included a presentation on all 17 goals and an overview of the world crises surrounding us.

Following “People” was “Peace” on May 9. On this day, students targeted reducing inequalities and the need for peace, justice and strong institutions in an unruly time.

Social media pages followed throughout the week, each highlighting the importance of the day’s particular “P.” And on day two, an exciting “Social Justice Poetry Night” featured amazing

local poets addressing pressing SDG issues through the powerful force of poetry. Funds raised went towards the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) important work in responding to the crisis in South Sudan.

“Partnership” day focused on fundamental goal #17: Partnerships.

Without partnerships, there would be no progress. Glebe Collegiate decided to partner with organizations that are championing the SDGs for a resource fair. There were booths offering presentations and information about their SDG-related work. The fair included such groups as Oxfam Canada, the United Way and SOS Children’s Villages, who are making a real difference in helping to realize the SDGs. Materials were available for students to help them build understanding and offer them suggestions for action.

Day four was all about “Prosperity,” emphasizing the need for affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation and

infrastructure and integrating sustainability into cities and communities.

The final day featured the “Planet” pillar. We partnered with an environmental group to promote the SDG goals, highlighting the importance of responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water and life on land.

Melded together, the 5 “Ps” provided the fabric of Glebe Collegiate’s SDG week.

Former UN Secretary-General BanKi Moon said, “Ours can be the first generation to end poverty and the last generation to address climate change before it is too late.” Because change begins with each of us, we each have the responsibility to do all we can to realize the SDGs and the hope they offer for a just and peaceful world.

Glashan Intermediate School at 28 Arlington Avenue, built in 1979

The original Glashan school was built in 1895 and renamed in 1905 for Dr. J.C. Glashan, Inspector of Schools.

Glashan marks 125 years Glashan Intermediate School, the oldest public school in Ottawa, is celebrating its 125th anniversary on Thursday, June 22, 2017. Former and current students, staff and families are invited to attend this important event at Glashan school, 28 Arlington Avenue, from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by a post celebration at the Ottawa Curling Club, 440 O’Connor Street, from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

A one-room schoolhouse called Hugh Street School (named after what is now Kent Street) with one teacher and 99 students was originally built in 1888 on the site where Glashan now stands. It soon became overcrowded,

so in 1892 a new four-room school was built on the site and renamed Archibald Street School (now Arlington Avenue). In 1905 this school was renamed Glashan School in honour of Dr. J.C. Glashan, Inspector of Schools from 1876 to 1910. The original architect of this new school and future additions was Moses Chamberlain Edey, who also designed the Cattle Castle (Aberdeen Pavilion at Lansdowne) and the Daly Building.

The original Glashan building was torn down in the summer of 1979 and replaced on the east side of the same lot with the existing Glashan Public School.

Glashan goes to Terrace, BC – field trip of a lifetime My first steps down those white aluminum stairs attached to the small jet left me shaking. My nose was flooded with waves of impossibly fresh air, cold and raw. The crisp breeze washed over me and invaded all my thoughts.

I began the overwhelming task of processing what lay before me; impossibly majestic mountains, crystal clear skies, trees bigger than I had ever known they could be. Even the clouds seemed to possess some sort of light that shone brighter than I can describe.

The scents of the damp snow drifted in the air, mixing with the blooming notes of pine adding yet another layer to the paradisiacal environment.

I hadn’t even made it down the steps of that plane before I completely fell in love with Terrace, British Columbia.

Fifty Grade 7 students from Glashan went on an exchange with 65 students from Skeena Middle School from February 27 to March 7. Experiences Canada, a registered Canadian charitable organization, facilitated this experiential learning opportunity. The idea is for us youth get a chance to explore our history, culture and current challenges and opportunities by meeting other youth across this expansive land and developing our sense of Canadian identity. The Department of Canadian Heritage pays generously for the transportation and students are billeted in each other’s homes. The students from British Columbia will visit Glashan and Ottawa from May 29 to June 5.

The entire experience was incredible, eye opening, unique and life changing. Little did we know that amazing things awaited us when we stepped into Glashan for the first time last September. But thanks to a lot of hard work from our amazing teachers, Barbara Brockmann and Renée Blais at

Glashan and Susan Brouwer at Skeena Middle School, the three parent volunteers, all our parents at home and the incredible support from the organization Experiences Canada, less than six months later 50 Glashan students made their way onto a plane. Our destination: The adventure of a lifetime!

Every moment of the trip surpassed even the wildest of our expectations.

We viewed and ventured into forests beautiful beyond comparison, saw the Pacific Ocean and went skiing in the glorious mountains that we had only ever seen on postcards. We met some of our fellow Canadians and formed connections we never would have had. We were welcomed into their houses and into their families, and got to do a variety of activities with the entire group

from Skeena Middle School (our twin school) from fun and casual bowling, to live performances for a local telethon.

Every moment we spent together was made magical. But if I was to pick the thing that made this trip so special, the thing that had the biggest impact, that still swims through my head today, it would be the history and culture that we were so lucky to learn about. We visited two self-governing indigenous communities, the Nisga’a nation and the Kitselas nation, and they shared some of their incredible culture with us through museums and tours, displaying their heritage preand post-European contact through artifacts and modern art and for that I will always be grateful. We went to the North Pacific Cannery national historic site and received one of the most interesting and exceptional tours any of us had ever had.

We were welcomed into Northwest Community College and got the chance to see master and learning carvers at work in the Freda Diesing School of Art. This is a wonderful school that is continually adding to the expression of current indigenous art of northwest British Columbia. We connected with a group of younger students in Terrace when we led a drama workshop at Suwilaawks Community School. We explored the local

history of Terrace during a pioneer cemetery walk and learned about an important industry at the Rio Tinto aluminum smelter. And we had fun the entire time.

The trip completely changed what school was to me as the things we experienced and the things we saw were worth a thousand lessons in class.

Within that one week I got to spend in Terrace, I learned so much, but more importantly, I experienced it. I didn’t just listen to lectures and read textbooks about British Columbia, I got to live there for a week and realize firsthand some of the things that make up Canada, my homeland. I now understand a whole new meaning of the word Canadian, a meaning I couldn’t have just looked up in a dictionary, a meaning that completely changes my sense of the word. I didn’t head to Terrace expecting to learn these things, but as always life surprises us. And sometimes the surprises can be as amazing, life changing and incredible as this trip was.

Top five things you may not know about the OTLBC

You can really tell when spring is in the air and summer is just around the corner when you start to see a steady migration of smiling people, tennis rackets slung over their shoulders, strolling with purpose through the community of Old Ottawa South.

As the weather starts to warm, you’ll also start spotting front porches lined with drying towels as happy, tired kids wander back from a day of swimming, playing or summer camp, while enjoying a freezie with friends.

What amazing paradise are all these happy people coming and going from?

They are members of the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club, otherwise known as “your cottage in the city,” or simply the OTLBC. My family of four has always wanted to join. We aren’t from Ottawa and don’t have a cottage retreat, so we look for a summer escape when we’re in the city. Over the years, we’ve heard many convincing reasons why we should become OTLBC members and 2017 is the year we take the plunge!

My missions for this season is to blog my way through my family’s first summer as OTLBC members and share all the fantastic things the club has to offer. To pique your interest, I thought I should start with some amazing but surprisingly little known facts about the club.

The Club has the best patio in the neighbourhood. Why have dinner on a patio facing busy Bank Street when you can enjoy a peaceful view from the patio off the second floor of the OTLBC clubhouse? What many people don’t realize is that you don’t have to be a member to drop in for a drink or dinner. The Royal Oak operates a unique onsite pub where kids can wander freely and safely inside the confines of the club while their parents enjoy a social hour or meal. The club puts on a popular movie night on summer Fridays to entertain the younger set while the adults unwind from a busy week.

Not just tennis. Tennis is an amazing sport, don’t get me wrong, but the OTLBC is much more than just a tennis club. There is a fabulous outdoor pool with lots of green space in which to lounge with a blanket and a picnic.

The grounds also host beach volleyball games, kids’ summer camps, and a wide variety of events for all ages and interests. Have you met the club’s general manager Maria? Her motto is: “We love to say yes and try our best to make things happen.” If you have an idea for something you would like to see happen at the club, let them know!

One-week memberships are free from May 6 to 20! The OTLBC is open to everyone during that time, so drop by the club and pick up a oneweek voucher that will give you access

to everything the club has to offer. Just make sure you sign in at the front desk when you arrive. The in-ground pool opens later in the season, so if you would like to test the waters, grab your bathing suit and visit during the weekend of May 27.

There is no lawn bowling. Sorry about that. The club has been in existence since 1881. It decided to keep its original name because lawn bowling has been such a large part of the club’s history. Tradition and a strong sense of community contribute to making the OTLBC so special.

Membership isn’t one-size-fitsall. Unlike most chain-style sporting

facilities, the OTLBC has a creative approach to membership. The club’s staff is happy to help find the best plan for anyone interested in joining.
