KEY
Microtonal divisions - flat - 1/4-tone flat
- 1/8-tone flat
- 1/8-tone sharp
- 1/4-tone sharp
- sharp 3/8 and 3/4-tone subdivisions are not used in this score.
Noteheads and various notations
- Normal tone, present. Sustain for the duration of the line. - Air sound. Do not completely relax your embouchure – a trace of pitched air should always r remain. Sustain for the duration of the line.
- Teeth on the reed. Present sound. Reed fully vibrates. Not always a stable sound. See the notes on the next page. - Teeth on the reed. Air sound/ghost tone. Barely any pressure from the lower jaw. A faint, but stable sound. See the notes on the next page.
- Multiphonic. Resulting pitches are not specified, as the dynamic may strongly affect the tuning. Fingering always provided next to the event. - The only multiphonic that has no attached fingering. Occurs in the bass saxophone part. The sound does not have to be stable at all. This event is merely a notation of the techniques applied to the low b-flat fingering. Multiphonic embouchure with simultaneous tongue mute. - Tonguing density indication, notating the speed between sparse tonguing and maximum speed, when playing normally and without having teeth on the reed. - Tonguing density indication, notating the speed between sparse tonguing and maximum speed, when playing with teeth on the reed. When playing this articulation, use as much of your tongue as possible. Articulate assertively, so that the squeaky toothy overtones and the fundamentals of the fingered pitches are interspersed and sporadic, creating complex polyphony. - Voicing. Approximate vowel shaping the air sounds.
- Tongue mute. Mostly applied in air-only passages. Place as much of your tongue on the reed without stopping the air flow.
- Brush the tongue against the reed either in a side-to-side, front-to-back, or circular motion, to create an erratic faint rubbing sound.
- Transition from one state to another.
Conducting and time
The score and parts are subdivided into measures of four beats. The measures are shown with solid vertical lines, and the beats are shown with dotted vertical lines. The tempo indication currently is 72bpm to the beat; however, the tempo can be slowed down significantly if the ensemble finds it to be effective. The tempo should not rise above 76bpm. The timing of events in between the marked beats is subjective, unless an event begins or ends precisely on a bar/beat line. A steady attack or fade-in entry is more important than its timing precision, although the very beginning of the piece is a place of ultimate togetherness. The piece may also be performed from the score and without a conductor at the pace that the ensemble finds most appropriate for the acoustics of the concert space. For unconducted performance please use the alternative score without the time grid, which is provided after the subdivided score.
Breathing
All sustained sounds should be continuous, and breaths can only be taken where indicated with apostrophes in parentheses. Otherwise, the sustained exhaling should seamlessly transition into inhaling, even if it means loss of pitched tone. When inhaling, make sure to match the volume and the general sound to the vowel of exhaled sounds. When inhaling, the sounds tend to be quieter and more “hollow. If that occurs, lift the tongue up in the oral cavity and bring it closer to the reed. That will make the air resonate more and create more hiss. However, this technique also makes the vowel sound more closed. To adjust the vowel, open your throat to a much more hollow position. If the players can circular breathe, they can employ the technique only during the passages where full tone is produced, like the first page in soprano saxophone parts. At all other times, like when using sustained teeth-on-the-reed sounds, the players should employ the breath cycling technique described above.
Teeth on the reed sounds
Bottom teeth are placed approximately here ----->
Bottom teeth are placed approximately here ----->
The lower placement is largely dependent on the opening of the player’s mouthpiece. Basically, the lowest placement is
directly above the “fulcrum,” so that teeth pressure can still influence the pitch and presence of sound. For the most part, the sound of teeth on the reed technique in this piece should yield a variety of unstable sounds, even when notated with solid lines. For many players and depending on the instrument/reed, producing steady teeth on the reed sound may involve consistently greater pressure from the lower teeth. If that is the case, find the least possible lower jaw pressure that produces a sound that is on the verge of ghost tone/faint whistling air and sustained fuller sound. That is your default lower jaw pressure and the PPP dynamic. Even when notated with a solid line, the teeth on the reed sounds should only be totally consistent when the dynamic of the part achieves P or above. PP, PPP, or PPPP are highly fragile sounds that come in and out, like crickets or birds. When the teeth on the reed stave uses dashed lines, the sound should not break past the ghost tone territory. Very little air is needed to yield an adequate “ghost sound” with teeth on the reed. Aim for faint whistling by using slightly less air than usual and barely applying any pressure with the lower jaw. It should be just enough to turn air sounds into something with a trace of an extremely high pitch.
Vowel hierarchy The vowels used in voicing are pronounced similar to their phonetic lookalikes. Below are the sounds in the order of increasing roundness, openness, and depth of throat. [i] – pronounced like “need”
[e] – pronounced like “send” [a] – pronounced like “fun” [o] – pronounced like “bored” [u] – pronounced like “look”
Seating
The players should be seated in one row in a spaced out semi-circle. They should be seated in descending order from left to right, with Soprano Sax I on the left end from the conductor and Bass Sax on the right end from the conductor.
