THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

T

Susan Schulli schulli@glencoe.org

hanks to Bryan Wright, last year’s President, for his great passion for the Club and for setting a number of precedents for this column. Here I go…

It is official! Calgary has survived the coldest February on record and so has The Glencoe Golf & Country Club. All reports are positive from our amazing grounds crew that, despite the cold, the course has wintered well. Positive temperatures this week make it feel tantalizingly close to spring. I am a native Calgarian and I know that is a dangerous statement, but there, I said it! I have now accomplished my duty of speaking about the weather in The Flag in my first column as President. I expect it won’t be the last time it is mentioned. Another precedent set by the Past President is the discussion of books, specifically those relating to golf. If a book about golf can be “occult,” Golf in the Kingdom by Michael Murphy fits the bill. Lent to me by an old friend who received it as a gift from his father years ago, you would think that it really has little to do with golf, until you find yourself on the course channeling your inner “Shivas.” I will leave it at that. There are lots of exciting things to look forward to in the upcoming months including the Opening Cocktail Party on April 26. We hope to see you all there as it is a great time to meet and greet your fellow members, brag about your golf travels over the winter and set up a few rounds for the season.

There are capital improvement projects in the offering for the Club including a new maintenance building and great improvements to the Clubhouse that are currently being costed. We have 45 holes in the best shape of many years so now we need to keep the other land and buildings in step. You will be kept posted as we have more information. I would like to give a huge shout out to our Privileged Member Jaclyn Lee. After a fabulous college golf career, Jaclyn qualified for the LPGA and has embarked on her first professional season. Her first tournaments under her belt included a tie for 22nd at the Australian Women’s Open which earned her her first professional prize money. To top it off, Jaclyn is working online to finish the last term of her degree at Ohio State. Lastly, the Glencoe has been asked to bid for the 2020 Canadian Men’s Amateur Golf Tournament. After being considered by the appropriate Committees, a recommendation was made to the Board of Directors. The Board agreed and the bid will be submitted. This is a very prestigious event and it would showcase the Glencoe as the beautiful and challenging track that it is. If we are successful, there will be many great volunteer positions available to allow you to be front and center. See you on the links!

THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

W

Ash Chadha achadha@glencoe.org 403-240-7385

In the coming months we will be launching our new Member Guest Pass Booklet. Each of these booklets have nine Guest Green Fee passes (18 Holes) which members may use when bringing guests or family to the Club. We will only be offering 100 of these booklets on a first come first serve basis for $999+GST each. It’s a great opportunity for golf members to show off their Club at a discounted guest fee rate.

elcome to the 2019 golf season! As I write this, its wonderful to have some spring-like weather as the snow is melting and we are hopeful to be open and golfing in a couple of weeks. I hope that the winter season was a good one for you and that you are ready for a great season of golf at The Glencoe Golf & Country Club. We have been working diligently this winter reviewing 2019 operations and figuring out ways to improve your experience. In conjunction with the various Member Committees, we have an exciting year of golf and social activities lined up for you and look forward to seeing you soon and often. Please take the time to look at not only this edition of The Flag but also the various emails and social media postings we put out regularly, so you can stay on top of what is happening at your Club. Earlier this year we launched our “Trial Membership” program exclusively for our Downtown Glencoe Club members who were never members of the Golf Club. To date, we have had 20 members join and take up this opportunity to experience the full member benefits and privileges of what it’s like to be a member! We have restricted the amount of Trial Members which we will bring in, so that current members or new members don’t experience any challenges with desired tee time access. We have put a high emphasis on protecting the interests and investments of our current members who have paid full entrance fee or are in process. Our intention is to add new members through this program for long-term sustainability. The Board of Directors also approved funding for us to further investigate Clubhouse renovation plans along with an on-course maintenance utility building. At the moment, the scope is simply to get detailed drawings on these two projects and get proper costing before going back to the Board for further action. You will be hearing from us if these projects are approved by the Board before any work begins. More details to follow in due time.

I am very pleased to announce that Lisa Rosengarten has been hired as the new Membership & Marketing Manager at the Club. Lisa is a born and raised Calgarian who spent the last few years at Hockey Calgary holding the title, Manager of Marketing, Communications, Events and Sponsorships. We are actively recruiting for new members to join Glencoe, if you know of someone who may be looking to join our Club, please let Lisa know and she will surely get in touch with them. I am also very pleased to introduce Jordan Cameron as our new Executive Chef at the Club. Jordan is also from Calgary and was most recently the Executive Chef at the Bearspaw Golf & Country Club for the past couple of years. Jordan is a SAIT graduate who in past has worked at The Glencoe Club as a Sous Chef as well. Jordan is creative and is a very detail-oriented person that I strongly believe will elevate the food program at The Glencoe Golf & Country Club. In conclusion, I look forward to spending as much time as I possibly can with you this season. I hope to see you at the Club and hope you will take the time to let me know how we are doing. Your continued feedback is critical to me so that adjustments to operations can be made quickly and with minimal impact to your experience. Hope to see as many of you as possible at the Opening Cocktail Party on April 26. Friendly reminder: this is event is open to Glencoe Golf Members and Significant Other, 18+ only. We are all looking forward to making this the best golf year possible and hope to see you at the Club often.

GOLF COMMITTEE

Rob Heaton Golf Committee

t is the middle of March and Calgary is just coming out of the fourth coldest February on record. In 2016 and 2017 we already had access to the golf course, the course opened March 11 & 9 respectively. What will be the opening day for 2019? Will the season be longer than 2018? These questions are on our minds and only time can answer. As this is the first edition of The Flag for 2019. That signals the start of another golf season, so get your clubs cleaned, your balls purchased, and get set for another enjoyable year of golf. I am excited and honoured to be the chair of the Golf Committee for the 2019 season. I have the privilege to work with great committee chairs. This year’s Golf Committee is as follows: Men’s Committee: Derrick Newman, Men’s Captain Stuart Wigmore, Men’s Vice-Captain Ladies Committee: Emily Gauthier, Ladies Captain Liz Young, Ladies Vice-Captain Junior Committee: Erin Murphy-Vicq, Junior Chair Greg Duerr, Junior Vice-Chair Grounds Committee: Larry Strong Tracye Osler, Vice-Chair Invitational Committee: Dale Goehring, Invitational Chair

CELL PHONE POLICY

#golfcommittee

This group of individuals volunteer their time and work alongside Management and the Professional Team to provide services and events to the golf membership. Thank you for chairing your Committees and volunteering! I would also like to thank Richard Emery, past chair of the Golf Committee; for his leadership and direction over the past two years to the Glencoe Golf Committee. Richard had previously been involved with the Junior Committee and has given many volunteer hours to the Glencoe Golf community, which has moved the club to a better place than when he started. Thank you, Richard. A reminder that USGA’s modernization or update of the rules golf have come into effect for this season; the goal being to speed play and make the game more enjoyable. Good idea to familiarize yourself with the changes; I will try to highlight a change each month. New Rule: Under Rule 13.1d, there is no longer a penalty if a player (or opponent) accidentally causes the player’s ball to move on the putting green.

If this isn’t enough to get you excited about the golf season, then the Opening Cocktail Party on April 26, 5 – 7 pm should clinch the deal. Complementary to all golf members plus one significant other 18+ a great way to catch up with old friends, meet new members and find out what has happened over the winter. See you on the course!

The use of cellular and Wi-Fi enabled devices is permitted in all areas of the Clubhouse. The use of any device, with camera capabilities, is not permitted in the locker rooms. As a courtesy to other players, it is requested that cellular and Wi-Fi enabled devices on the Golf Course and Practice Facility be used only in case of emergencies or when their use will not be offensive to others.

MEN’S COMMITTEE

A

#menscommittee

re those birds chirping outside my window I hear? Is spring truly around the corner? Well, we can all hope the polar vortex that encapsulated the city of Calgary has finally subsided and forecasts of sun and above zero temperatures appear to be in the offering. Welcome back to golf season!

I am honoured to be serving as your Club Captain this season. I’ve been a member for as long as I can remember. I once worked side by side with Bruce in Outdoor Services and helped hold up the counter for Steve in the Golf Shop as well. The Glencoe Golf & Country Club has been a home away from home for me my entire life, and so I’m excited to give back and lead the Men’s program in 2019. Derrick Newman Men’s Committee

Have your finger on the trigger on April 1 as event sign-ups open the first of the month. Always an easy way to plan your year and not regret missing any events because you forgot to sign up. The Captains Dinner, Stampede Stableford and Member Guest will go quick, so make sure to reserve your spot!

Kicking off the Men’s golf calendar this year will be the Burn Your Bridges event… hopefully. Last year, we had to postpone and eventually cancel it as mother nature had other ideas. It’s a great event though, with two teams squaring off in alternate shot and best ball formats. To the winners go steak and lobster and to the losing squad wieners and beans! Let’s fill this event up and have some fun. The unofficial kick-off event of the Men’s season, the Captains Dinner, will be taking place on May 28 this year. We can “almost” guarantee no snow this late in May, so we are hoping our planning saves us from moving the date around in 2019. The Member Guest will look to build momentum off last year’s success with the same one-day format in place and great value of $299 all-in cost. We will do our best to accommodate as many players as possible, while keeping an eye on having the best event experience. Capping off the season will be the Club Championships on the August 23 – August 25 weekend. The marquee event on the calendar will close out the event season with a weekend of golf, games, horseraces, food and drink for all as we celebrate the year in golf. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Club soon!

Congratulations Tom Pinder on winning his first Men’s Club Championship at his winter Club of Indian Ridge.

GROUNDS COMMITTEE

#groundscommittee

I

t’s a privilege to chair the Grounds Committee for 2019. This is my third year on the Committee and I would like to recognize Robyn Hemminger (past Chair) and Scott Dutton (past Vice-Chair) for their service. Your Grounds Committee is composed of returning members Tom Christie, Rick Lancaster, Trayce Osler and Brian Ward. Larry Strong Grounds Committee

I would like welcome new members to our Committee this year: Peter Denhamer Tim Hogan Adam McBride Our first meeting was held in February where several topics were discussed. A key component of all our meetings is Brock Coates’ Superintendent Report. The course has wintered well and snow cover is adequate. After a slow start winter, activities have picked up (cross-country skiing, skating). The polar vortex over a lot of North America is hopefully behind us such that we can start thinking about swinging the clubs sometime this spring.

Outside of normal capital equipment spending, one important near-term project the Board is considering is a future auxiliary maintenance building, above the Elbow River flood plain at the south end of the property. This will free up space for Turfcare’s needs in their current facility. The Grounds Committee overseas all physical assets within the confines of the property, not just the 45 greens we play. Our mission is to “provide conditions across the property that will make the membership proud to call the Club their own while enjoying the golfing experience to the fullest.”

We look forward to a successful 2019 season working closely with Management, Brock and his team. In addition, we are here for the members to get your feedback and welcome any comments/ concerns for future discussion at our Committee.

DID YOU GOLF DURING THE WINTER MONTHS?

HOW IT WORKS:

I

Before entering you score into the handicap computer use the following to adjust your hole-by-hole scores and adjust your total score if necessary:

f you did, you are obligated to enter your scores into the handicap computer. The Golf Canada handicap rules state: “Scores made in an area during its ‘Active Season’ must be recorded”. For example, winter in Arizona is part of its active season. (Alberta’s active season is April 1st to October 31st). You would adjust your scores using the Golf Canada Equitable Stroke control system and enter them into The Glencoe Golf & Country Club handicap system. If you play more than 20 games it is only necessary to enter your last 20 games as your Golf Canada Handicap Factor is calculated utilizing the lowest 10 of your last 20 scores (handicap differentials).

WHAT IS EQUITABLE STROKE CONTROL (ESC)? Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) is the downward adjustment of individual hole scores for handicap purposes in order to make Handicap Factors more representative of a player’s potential scoring ability. It sets a maximum number that a player can post on any hole depending on the player’s Course Handicap. THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB | glencoegolf.org | 12

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD PROFESSIONAL

T

he entire Golf Operations team is very excited to welcome the membership back for the 2019 season. We hope you have wintered well and look forward to seeing you and getting the various programs underway.

• Elimination or reduction of “ball moved” penalties: There will be no penalty for accidentally moving a ball on the putting green or in searching for a ball; and a player is not responsible for causing a ball to move unless it is “virtually certain” that he or she did so.

One of the hot topics this winter and going into this

• Relaxed putting green rules: There will be no penalty if a ball played from the putting green hits an unattended flagstick in the hole; players may putt without having the flagstick attended or removed. Players may repair spike marks and other damage made by shoes, animal damage and other damage on the putting green and there is no penalty for merely touching the line of putt.

spring has been the new Rules of Golf introduced by

Judy Forshner, PGA, BEd Head Professional jforshner@glencoe.org

the USGA and the R&A. Alberta Golf will be putting on several sessions throughout the city this spring to review the Rules of Golf and these new changes. A session will be held here at The Glencoe Golf & Country Club on May 6 at 7 pm.

We are looking forward to a fantastic season and to seeing you all soon. Best wishes for fabulous golf and may the wind always be at your back!

As well, we will be providing refreshers here at the Club on the first tee throughout the season. Members are also encouraged to go to the Golf Canada website (golfcanada.ca) and take the complimentary level 1 Rules of Golf education series. Level 1 provides a great way to learn the basics of the Rules of Golf. According to USGA and R&A the most significant adjustments made to the Rules of Golf include: • Dropping procedure: When taking relief (from an abnormal course condition or penalty area, for example), golfers will now drop from knee height. • Measuring in taking relief: The golfer’s relief area will be measured by using the longest club in his/her bag (other than a putter) to measure one club-length or two club-lengths. • Removing the penalty for a double hit: The penalty stroke for accidentally striking the ball more than once in the course of a stroke has been removed. Golfers will simply count the one stroke they made to strike the ball. • Balls lost or out of bounds: Alternative to Stroke and Distance: A new Local Rule will now be available permitting committees to allow golfers the option to drop the ball in the vicinity of where the ball is lost or out of bounds (including the nearest fairway area), under a twostroke penalty.

THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB | glencoegolf.org | 14

• Relaxed rules for “penalty areas” (previously called “water hazards”): Red and yellow-marked penalty areas may cover areas of desert, jungle, lava rock, etc., in addition to areas of water; expanded use of red penalty areas where lateral relief is allowed; and there will be no penalty for moving loose impediments or touching the ground or water in a penalty area. • Relaxed bunker rules: There will be no penalty for moving loose impediments in a bunker or for generally touching the sand with a hand or club. A limited set of restrictions (such as not grounding the club right next to the ball) is kept to preserve the challenge of playing from the sand; however, an extra relief option is added for an unplayable ball in a bunker, allowing the ball to be played from outside the bunker with a twostroke penalty. • Imbedded ball rule: Free relief is allowed if your ball is embedded on the fairway or in the rough (but “embedded” means that part of your ball is below the level of the ground) • Relaxed rule for striking your own equipment: No penalty if your ball hits you or your equipment accidentally after a stroke • Pace-of-play support: Reduced time for searching for a lost ball (from five minutes to three); affirmative encouragement of “ready golf ” in stroke play; recommending that players take no more than 40 seconds to play a stroke and other changes intended to help with pace of play.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD PROFESSIONAL

There are three publications available that will provide guidance to assist golfers with applying the rules: 1. The Player’s Edition of the Rules of Golf which is a condensed, user-friendly set of the Rules. It is intended to be the primary publication for golfers. 2. The Rules of Golf which is the full edition of the Rules and a more thorough version of the revised Rules, and 3. The Official Guide to the Rules of Golf which replaces the Decisions book and contains interpretations of the Rules, committee procedures and the Modified Rules of Golf for Players with Disabilities. All three of these publications are available in the Golf Shop.

We look forward to the start of our many leagues and encourage all members to participate. There is something for everyone. The leagues include Tuesday Ladies Day, Tuesday Men’s Night, Wednesday g.l.e.e. Ladies, Men’s Wednesday Afternooners, Thursday Senior Men’s & Ladies, Thursday Junior League, Friday White Tee Ladies and Friday Black Tee No Strokes Men. aving just returned from ten days in San Jose del Cabo, I’m currently experiencing a bout of weather change depression. I’ve gone from playing golf at Cabo del Sol in 28 degrees to returning to Calgary when it was minus 17. In early spring Flag articles it’s customary to comment on the weather so I can now tick that item off my to do list.

Steve Thomson, PGA PGA Associate Professional/ Golf Services Manager sthomson@glencoe.org

As we have done the past three seasons, we sent part of our Professional team to attend the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando. Glenn Boswell, Gord Newis, and I attended this year’s show. We were able to compile a list of several great ideas and products from the Demo Day and our two days at the show. As always there were some great speakers and educational opportunities. One of our highlights was listening to Greg Norman speaking on the main stage about several new ideas and technologies coming to the game. Set the date of May 5 in your calendars as we will be putting on our annual Gala Demo Day from 10 am – 4 pm. This is the perfect day to try out all the new equipment for 2019. All our equipment vendors, sales representatives and your entire Professional team will be on hand to assist you with all your equipment needs. We will have Club Fitting Days from 12 am – 4 pm every Friday from the beginning of May through July. In addition, we will have our team of Professionals providing club fitting appointments on a weekly basis. Please contact the Golf Shop to book your appointment, or to obtain more information on our club fitting program. Building our Golf Operations team is well under way for the 2019 season. We want to provide the members with an experience that makes them feel like the Club is their second home. At this point it appears that we will have several returning employees who will be a major asset to our team. Our entire team will be looking forward to seeing you again at the start of our golfing year. Each day we are receiving several orders of our new Golf Shop inventory. We are always excited in the spring to unpack all the new product. Processing all these orders is a huge task and I want to thank our entire team for their efforts during this very busy time.

Every year at this time the countdown begins. As I am writing this article on March 8 it is currently 41 sleeps until the beginning of The Masters. There might be a little extra energy around this year’s Masters with Tigers resurgence into the top ten of the world rankings.

Naturally we shall end this article with a little Master’s trivia: In 1986 which two players had a putt on the 72 hole to force a playoff with Nicklaus? Seek me out in the Golf Shop if you know the answer.

Gearing Up!

A

Brock Coates, AGS Head Superintendent bcoates@glencoe.org

lthough the weather to start off winter was enjoyable, it wasn’t an ideal start when it comes to caring for turfgrass. A little bit of snow followed by the nice mild weather created ice formation on several greens across the property. The continued mild weather along with great effort moving any remaining snow allowed for decent melting of most of the ice. The small areas that remain should be more manageable than years past with our major concern being some mechanical damage on a few greens from the snow clearing effort. As of today, the putting surfaces look quite manageable to start off the season. Last October’s major snow event created ideal conditions for the growth of negative turf pathogens. There was significant snow mold growth on many of the mature Meadows and Bridges tees and fairways. We did see some recovery throughout October once the snow disappeared but anticipate that more recovery will be needed this spring. To aid in the fairway recovery program and help alleviate the severity of future winter damage, an early spring de-thatching and topdressing program is being planned for. Although there may be some more noticeable blemishes short term, we will see the benefits and increased playability this golfing season.

DRESS CODE

• Blue Jeans, in good repair are only permissible in the Clubhouse. • Pants/Shorts/Skorts/Skirts that are in good repair. It is advised that skorts/skirts sold in the Golf Shop or major golf retailers would meet both the style requirements and the length of “reasonable standard” regardless of brand and or fit differentials on different body types. • For Ladies, shirts may have sleeves or a collar but must have one or the other. Tank top styles are not permitted.

As the snow starts to disappear from the property our efforts will focus on getting the Practice Facility hitting mats accessible and usable as soon as possible. Having the Bridges course open for play will be the next priority.

Having a few extra days in the spring to clean up the flax straw sandwich tarp system on the Meadows goes a long way to have the property neat and tidy as early as possible. As Mother Nature takes care of the remaining snow and wet conditions, courses will open as soon as they are playable. After the miserable second half of winter we are excited to be experiencing some decent weather and are chomping at the bit to get out on the property. We hope to see the courses busy with play in the immediate future!

• For Men, golf shirts with sleeves and collars are required. Shirts must be tucked in at the waist at all times unless designed to be worn untucked. (Defined as buttoned from collar to hem, hemmed and evenly cut around the bottom.) • Golf footwear with soft spikes or laced athletic running shoes on the golf courses are acceptable. All other styles of footwear would be considered unacceptable.

Gardening & Mental Health

W

inter, it seems, is coming to an end which means it’s time to dust off the trowels and start gearing up for spring! Mental health has been a very prominent topic in all industries as of late. I want to take the opportunity to discuss it as it pertains to gardening and how the two can impact each other. Dani Creighton Landscape Manager

There are two dominant theories in understanding the impact of gardening on mental health, attention restoration theory and psycho-physiological stress reduction theory. Both are psycho-evolutionary theories, based on the biophilia hypothesis—the idea that humans have an innate need to affiliate with the natural environment. In recent history it seems that people have become increasingly removed from the natural environment. It has been estimated that people typically spend 95-99 per cent of their time indoors!

It’s important to know that people have two types of attention: direct attention (requiring effort, e.g. when we problem solve) and fascination (non-goal oriented and effortless attention). Direct attention is a limited resource that can be overloaded (causing stress) and that people need to use the alternative system—fascination—to restore it. Fascination is thought to be dominant in natural environments, such as gardens, where there are captivating stimuli to hold attention. Gardens often have three qualities that contribute to a restorative environment: being away (allowing a person to mentally and physically move to a different space), extent (providing a sense of being connected to a larger world) and compatibility (the ability of an environment to meet the needs and interests of the person). THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB | glencoegolf.org | 18

Gardening can offer more than simply contact with nature. They are usually social interactions, providing opportunities for people to interact with others. They also enable people to engage in a meaningful activity, developing specific knowledge and skills. These social and occupational factors may play a key role in promoting a sense of belonging and enhancing social inclusion for people experiencing mental health difficulties. Gardening also involves physical exercise, recognized as helpful in the treatment of common mental health difficulties. For people experiencing psychological distress, who may not feel able to meet the demands of the human world, sensory contact with the natural environment enables connection and communication on a simpler, safer level. This may in turn lead to opportunities to begin to confront personal difficulties.

Studies have shown that benefits of gardening can include significant reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety and significant increase in attentional capacity and self-esteem. There are also benefits such as; emotional (reduced stress and improved mood), social (growth of social networks and improved social skills), vocational (learning new skills and changing attitude towards work), physical (improved sleep and physical health), and spiritual (feeling more connected to nature and fascination with plants). These are just some of the great reasons for us to dig our shovels in deep and smell the roses more often! Happy planning, and as usual, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call, email or come find me down in Turfcare!

I am excited to announce that Jordan Cameron has joined our team as Executive Chef. Jordan began cooking at age 15 as the fryer cook at an A&W. Following high school, he spent time cooking in the Yukon and then transitioned to a small conference centre in the Gulf Islands for four years. Upon returning to Calgary he attended the Professional Cooking program at SAIT, graduating with honours in 2008. He also interned at Thomas Keller’s restaurant, Bouchon, during the summer of 2007. During cooking school, he was hired as an apprentice cook at The Glencoe Club. Over the next 8 years, he progressed to the Banquet Chef role and finally to the Executive Sous Chef position. In 2017 he left Glencoe to take the Executive Chef role at Bearspaw Country Club. Having the opportunity to build a strong team and positive culture in the Bearspaw kitchen over the past two seasons was a career highlight and he is excited about the opportunity to lead the kitchen at The Glencoe Golf & Country Club. Katie Collin is returning for her second season and will be our Clubhouse Supervisor. Katie will be focusing on the day to day operations as support to ensure our service standards are being met. Cathy Butterfield is joining our Glencoe Golf Team as our On-Course Supervisor. Cathy brings a wealth of experience with her. These two Supervisors are here to make an impact in your service experience.

I

Ryan Anderson, PGA, B.Mgmt. Head Teaching Professional 2016 & 2017 PGA of Alberta Teacher of the Year 2016-2018 US Kids Top 50 Instructor randerson@glencoe.org

deally, you’ve managed to keep swinging through the winter, either by getting away, playing on simulators or hitting into nets during the winter months. If this is you, congrats, you’ve been maintaining your golf and it will be a lot easier to transition back the course this spring. Now, double congrats, if you are that person who manages to work on your flexibility, cardio and improving your strength in the off season to help prepare for the new one ahead of us. PGA tour professionals have evolved a great deal from twenty years ago. The dominance of Tiger Woods on tour has really brought fitness to the forefront of golf. Players have noticed and now are working on their fitness continuously. It is becoming the norm on tour to use fitness to enhance mobility, strength, stamina and even swing speeds to play better golf and to play injury free. Players like Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnston, Brooks Koepka and Lexi Thompson are some of the top players on tour who are dedicated to improving their golf fitness level. I believe this is giving them an edge on Sunday when the grid of the week is at its toughest point. In a perfect world we all would be practicing and training for the upcoming season. However, for most of us that is not possible. If life has gotten in the way and you haven’t been able to keep your golf game in shape during the off season, you need to start slow and build on it to avoid injuries. The most common golf injury is back pain and it is a very difficult injury to return to golf quickly. Most people’s daily activities do not involve the twisting and turning of the upper and lower body. If not careful or trying to do too much, too fast and too soon it can quickly turn into an injury that will put your golf game on hold indefinitely. If returning to the game from an absence focus on the following to get back into high gear quickly: 1. Flexibility Areas to focus on are shoulders openers, quad, hips and hip flexors, psoas, hamstring stretches and lower back mobility. Pick on of your favourite stretches and build a mini warm up routine to prepare for swinging the club.

THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB | glencoegolf.org | 22

2. Balance Good balance is a necessity to be able to hit and repeat good shots. Good balance and stability give you the chance to produce faster clubhead speeds and hit your shots consistently. My favourite balance drill is a standing one leg with a torso twist. This dynamic movement incorporates many of the movements in the golf swing while focusing on balance. To begin, start with feet shoulder width apart. Then raise one foot in air and balance on the other for 10 seconds. Repeat on both sides. Then if successful, move on adding a twist. To do this setup in golf posture and cross your arms onto your shoulders. Lift one leg, stay in balance and add a twist with your upper body while keeping your lower body quiet. Repeat exercise on both legs. 3. Build a training and playing schedule In order to have endurance and to stay healthy you need to start with sessions that are appropriate for your fitness level. Map out your practice and playing schedule on a calendar to help you find the right balance for you. This blueprint will help you stay committed and will help you better assess if you are doing the right amount of practice and play for your body. Make sure you have flexibility in this plan and add or scale back as needed. A good general rule on practice versus play is a 1:1 ratio. The best practice routines are ones that combine full swing and short game using a random style of practice that you focus more on target and less on repetition. 4. If you need help seek it Your local professional can and will help you play better golf. We have trained eyes, technology, drills and experience that will help you play your best golf this season. A lesson or a series of lessons will expedite your learning and understanding on how to swing the club efficiently with minimizing the risk of injury.
