THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

T

his last month has certainly flown by and with it there has been a complete transformation of the Golf Club from the quiet winter to almost full swing. I have seen a number of you hardy folks out on the links with your many layers of golf course chic. The crew have done an amazing job to get as many holes as they can ready for us to play. By the time you are reading this, we will be fully operational for another season! Susan Schulli schulli@glencoe.org

Master’s weekend has now come to an end, and an exciting end it was! It is a reminder of the “home away from home” atmosphere that we strive for when a gang of folks huddled around the TVs in the downtown gym together watching the last two holes. Apparently “old” guys can still golf! We have many upcoming events that are well subscribed. There has been a healthy signup for the Rules Seminar on May 6 which is very positive. The goal of many of the rule changes is to encourage speed of play, which we all appreciate!

On a different note, rumours abound around the city about the financial health of a number of local clubs. We are very fortunate at the Glencoe to have a very good debt position and are therefore able to invest in capital projects to keep the Club in the shape it should be to keep and attract members. This is why the success of the Trial Membership project is so important. A healthy membership allows us to continue to invest in our future. To date we have sold 30 Trial Memberships and the excitement voiced by many of these new members is great to hear. We are also in the fortunate position of having 45 holes to accommodate everyone very comfortably for tee-times. We hope they love the Club as much as we do and that we will see a number of these folks for many years to come. Here’s to upcoming golf in short sleeves!

THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

hat a difference a year makes! It is wonderful that we had golfing and 36 holes open this April. This time last year we had over three feet of snow. Congratulations to Brock and our Turfcare team on the excellent spring course conditions. Ash Chadha achadha@glencoe.org 403-240-7385

Did you know that you can now book a golf lesson directly online through our website? Yes! No need to call the Golf Shop to book a lesson. Our PGA of Canada Professionals have posted their teaching availability schedule online, which ALL members can access.

We have been working diligently this winter reviewing 2019 operations and making changes to improve your experience while here. Please take the time to look at the monthly Flag, as well as the various emails, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook postings we put out regularly to stay on top of what is happening at your Club. Also, please download the Glencoe Golf APP! This mobile app is the easiest way to connect electronically with the Club and I encourage you to download and start using it as soon as possible. Please see any of the staff if you have any questions or need assistance with any of this technology. Our Trial Membership offer, which is only open to downtown Glencoe Club members, has been well received. To date we have 30 new members who have taken up this opportunity to experience The Glencoe Golf & Country Club. We have also recently welcomed six new full members to the Club. If you come across any of these new members, please make them feel welcome and part of the Glencoe community. If you know of anyone looking to join a golf club, please let our new Membership & Marketing Manager, Lisa Rosengarten, know... your referral is the best advertising! May marks the beginning of all the golf programming at the Club. I hope that you will take advantage of the various programs available to all age groups, from Juniors to Seniors and in between. We do have something for everyone! I also invite you to experience all our food services. We have been working diligently to improve all aspects of the Food & Beverage operations and welcome your patronage and feedback. We have simplified the booking rules and rates for guests. Our green fee rate is $129+GST on any course you wish to play and you are only restricted from bringing guests weekends and holidays prior to 12 noon. We have also upgraded our golf cart fleet this year. Members will now experience brand new Club Car golf carts complete with USB charging plugs and cushion seats. Furthermore, new this year, all our beverage carts will be using wireless iPads as point of sale units. No more clipboards and paper for member charges! Members can sign for their purchase directly on the iPads and have the receipt emailed to them (if they would like)! We are very excited about the positive impact these changes will have on your experience. In conclusion, I look forward to spending as much time as I possibly can with you this season. I hope to see you in the practice areas, Clubhouse or golfing and I hope you will take the time to let me know how we are doing. Your continued feedback is critical so that adjustments to service can be made quickly and with minimal impact to your experience. Cheers to a great 2019!

LIGHTNING POLICY

In the event of a lightning strike within an eight-kilometer radius, a police siren will sound. It is recommended shelter be taken. All play will be suspended for all Club leagues and tournaments when a lightning delay is in effect. An intermittent horn will sound when it is safe to resume play.

GOLF COMMITTEE

T Rob Heaton Golf Committee

he 2019 Masters is in the books and what an exciting start to the first major of the year! This year’s play was no exception with a grouping of great players within striking distance, the sudden changes in the leaderboard shows how punishing golf can be. Masters weekend is the unofficial start of the golf season and we had a course open. The Bridges started our season followed by The Meadows and The Forest, with Slopes soon to be completing the 45 holes; after our spring snow melts that is! Kudos to Brock and his team! I have heard the word from other members and experienced it myself, that the course is in great shape for April. Water and heat will green the course up beautifully. This year in an effort to bring new members to The Glencoe Golf & Country Club an invitation was extended to non-golf members of The Glencoe

THIRD ANNUAL

Club to come and try the Golf Club for a season and hopefully realize the gem in their backyard and become permanent members. This offer was for Downtown members only and only until May 1; to date 30 trial members have taken advantage. There have been six new full memberships to The Glencoe Golf & Country Club as well. This month’s new PGA rule: Accidentally moving the ball during a search is now without penalty.

If you want to find out all the changes in the rules of golf the Glencoe is hosting a Rules Seminar on May 6, ask in the Golf Shop for details. On behalf of all the Committees that work hard and innovatively to improve the Club, we welcome you to the 2019 golf season.

Two 30-man teams randomly selected by the Professionals. You and your assigned partner take on a pairing from the other team in 9-hole alternate shot match play. For the back nine you shift to take on a separate twosome in a 9-hole scramble. 60 player maximum. 2 teams, 2 nines, 2 separate tees, 2 separate pins. (You will love the pins on the back 9!)

sn’t this nice? Golf in April. What a difference a year makes as we are off and running in 2019!

Event registration is now open for all events. Make sure to go online and register before it’s too late. The first event on the docket is Burn Your Bridges. This event is the perfect way to kick off the year. A team format event with 18 holes of best ball and alternate shot competition. The winning team will be treated to Steak and Lobster while the losing team will be treated to the finest Wieners and Beans! Friendly ribbing and jabs are encouraged. A tasty addition to Men’s Night in 2019: During every Men’s Night we will be offering pints of a feature beer for $6 per pint.

We will have one keg available for each Men’s Night which we will tap at 4 pm and will have available at the feature price until we run out. The feature beer selection will rotate and change throughout the season. Feature brews will be selected by the Food & Beverage team. The rest of our craft beer lineup will be available at its regular price per pint ($7 or $9). This year the Food & Beverage team is focused on providing a value driven lineup of local, craft beers that they are thrilled to introduce to the membership. Make sure to visit the Spike Lounge after your round to have a taste! Another small change to Men’s Night is in reference to the payouts of Snips and Deuces. In the past,

you have been awarded cash in those little brown envelopes for winning either Snip or a Deuce. Moving forward, these winnings will be awarded to your Credit Book account. In relating Credit Book news, you will now be allowed to use your Credit Book earnings in all food and beverage entities throughout the Club. There should be no excuses for buying your buddy a beer post round now after you make a 2 on the 13th hole this year. The Captain’s Dinner is sold out yet again. Looking forward to hosting this great event as the official kick off to the 2019 season that will be played in late May. Last but not least, I’d like to take this chance to welcome all the new and returning members of the Men’s Committee in 2019. • Vice Captain: Stuart Wigmore • Committee Members: Henry Schultz (new) Rob Widdowson (new) Ron McCrimmon (returning) Sean Godfrey (new) Tyler Brill (returning) Wayne Hohner (returning) As always, if you have any questions, comments, concerns, please reach out to any one of your committee members. GROUNDS COMMITTEE

S

ome of you may remember the Chicago song from 1970 “25 or 6 to 4.” Pundits have interpreted it to represent an exhausted song writer trying to finish his lyrics into the wee hours of the morning. My “25 or 6 to 4” was the morning of April 5 with the clock saying 3:34 am and me lying awake musing about playing golf on Bridges in 12 hours! Larry Strong Grounds Committee

It's very impressive that we are playing golf this early considering the low temperature March 2 was -31ºC. Brock and his team have worked hard to get the course ready and didn't disappoint that afternoon of the 5th. Many courses in Calgary still aren't open at time of writing due to the brutal winter and one of the deepest frost levels in 30 years. The Grounds Committee had the pleasure to meet in early March at the course. This tour focused on the Turfcare building which many of us probably have never set foot in. It was an eye opener to see the sheer volume of equipment stuffed into the existing space. If you've been down at the range you'll see a cleared area behind 9 Bridges green where the potential new Maintenance building will be situated. This site if approved by the Board will take pressure off the existing building and sit above the flood plain in the unlikely event Mother Nature decides to dump another 200 mm of rain in less than 48 hours (remember 2013).

GOLF RULE

#groundscommittee

We understand now what keeps some of the the team busy all winter – caring for over 45 mowers, almost 200 carts, sharpening over 130 cutting units, sanding and staining thousands of pieces of “kit” such as benches, rocking chairs, bins, etc. We also stood in the staging area where every morning at 5:30 am during the golf season up to 70 staff prepare to get after the mowing, raking, pruning and watering of our 45 holes. In April, our Committee had the pleasure to see some of the on-course improvements that have taken place over the winter. Standing on the first tee of The Forest you will now be able to see the 18th green due to brush and tree removal. The Forest finishing hole will now be able to bask in more sunlight and on the day of our tour looked in midseason form. This was one of the many projects that the Turfcare team undertook during the off-season. Opening additional holes on course is top of mind for everyone so stay tuned. Some heat to melt the snow and moisture to bring life to the grass will be important factors to consider.

Members’ guests are allowed to warm-up on the Practice Facility only if they are registered to play golf the same day. If you encounter slow play on the golf course you are encouraged to call the Golf Shop at 403-571-0055.

HANDICAP COMMITTEE

T

he primary role of the Handicap Committee is to protect the playing field at large by ensuring that all the members are playing with accurate and current handicap factors. The Handicap Committee has the authority to monitor individual handicaps and take action when necessary. All acceptable scores must be adjusted as per the Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) formula and entered into the Handicap Computer. It is important that scores be recorded consecutively and as soon as possible. Players must have an established handicap factor to be eligible to participate in Match Play competitions, Interclub, Handicap tournaments and many other special events. Please see a committee member or a Club Professional if you need assistance establishing your handicap. Always Post Your Scores If: • You play a 9-hole round. (The computer will make any necessary adjustments.) • You play at least 13 holes in an 18-hole round or 7 holes in a 9-hole round. On the holes you did not play, record par plus any handicap strokes you would have received. • You are playing stroke play or match play, including scores made in team competitions.

#handicapcommittee

PACE OF PLAY POLICY • The maximum allowed pace of play is four hours and five minutes for an 18-hole round of golf on a fully occupied Glen Meadows and four hours and 15 minutes for an 18 hole round of golf on a fully occupied Glen Forest. This is the longest it should take on a full course. It is not the required minimum pace. • A group that falls behind the required pace of play will receive two warnings and then be moved up into the proper position. • First Warning: A group falling behind the required pace of play shall be asked to speed up. • Second Warning: If the group is spoken to a second time they shall be informed that if the pace of play does not improve they will be moved up into proper position. • Third Warning: The group will be moved up into the proper position. • Please remember: “Your place on the golf course is immediately behind the group in front, and not immediately in front of the group behind.” Etiquette dictates that a group with an opening ahead of them, yet maintaining a reasonable pace, should let the group behind them play through, if the approaching group is playing at a quicker pace. Please do not expect to complete your round in less than three hours and 30 minutes. • Members encountering slow play on the golf course are encouraged to call the Golf Shop at 403-571-0055.

Do Not Post Your Scores If: • You play fewer than 13 holes of 18 or fewer than 7 holes of 9. • You play in a competition limiting the types of clubs used (i.e. irons only, 3-clubs). • A majority of holes are not played in accordance with the Principles of the Rules of Golf, as in “scramble” or “alternate shot” formats. • Scores are made on a course with no Golf Canada or USGA Course and Slope Rating. • An 18-hole course is less than 3000 yards.

This event is for you and one other couple (guests or members). There is no charge for green fees.

COURSE ROTATIONS & PRACTICE FACILITY There are a few changes to the course rotations and Practice Facility hours to increase consistency and maximize member access. The changes are as follows: Aeration Tuesday, May 21: Bridges will close at 4 pm and the Lakes will close at 5 pm.

AUGUST 28 TO SEPTEMBER 1 If you would like to volunteer, please go to shawcharityclassic.com for more information.

Bridges to Lakes will open at 7 am and the Slopes will be closed until Turfcare advises it is open for play. This process will be repeated for the August 6/7 fall aeration as well. Early Morning Slopes Bridges Rotation The Slopes Bridges rotation will be open starting at the first tee time for 12 tee times on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (also holiday Mondays). There will be no early morning tee times on the Slopes/ Bridges Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Bridges standalone would open 9 am Tuesdays and Thursdays.

THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB | glencoegolf.org | 14

Forest and Practice Facility access on Wednesdays Every Wednesday, The Forest and Practice Facility will be open at 9 am. This would fluctuate in the spring/fall when first tee times are later than 9 am. The rotation each Monday morning will initially be Slopes/Bridges. The Lakes/Slopes rotation will begin at 11 am.

RULES OF GOLF - BUNKERS No more local rule allowing the removal of stones from a bunker. The new Rules of Golf no longer allows for the Club’s local rule deeming stones in a bunker to be moveable obstructions. Stones are loose impediments and loose impediments can now be removed in a bunker. However, if in the act of removing a stone, the ball moves, it is a one stroke penalty and the ball must be returned to its original position. The removed stone does not need to be replaced. Relief options for a ball unplayable in a bunker A player decides that his or her ball in a bunker is unplayable. The player has four options as per the following diagram: 1. For one penalty stroke, the player may take stroke-and-distance relief. 2. For one penalty, the player may take back-onthe-line relief in the bunker. 3. For one penalty stroke, the player may take lateral relief in the bunker. 4. New: For a total of two penalty strokes, the player may take back-on-the-line relief outside the bunker based on a reference line going straight back from the hole through the spot of the original ball.

GOLF SHOP

O

ur Golf Operations team includes the Golf Professionals, the Golf Shop Assistants and our Outdoor Services crew. This team consists of approximately 40 people. One of the favourite aspects of my role as Golf Services Manager is getting to work along side all these great people and seeing them develop over their years at the Club.

Steve Thomson, PGA PGA Associate Professional/ Golf Services Manager sthomson@glencoe.org

On of our longer serving team members is our Golf Shop Assistant Team Lead, John Moss. This is John’s seventh season at the Club and he is taking on a lot of new responsibilities this year. John’s plate will be covered with club repair, defective products, event billing, training and several other daily Golf Shop operational duties. John provides great service to the members and a great deal of support to our team behind the scenes. We are very lucky to have John on our team and I want to sincerely thank John for everything he has and will be doing for Golf Operations. I hope you enjoy the interview I had with your reigning Glencoe Club’s Men’s Curling Club Champion, John Moss. When did you first begin playing golf? I first began playing golf when I was about 5 or 6 years old but weirdly enough I only liked to practice. Luckily, I grew out of that phase and have never looked at a driving range since! I really got interested in golf when I was 12 years-old and had a good group of buddies to play with. Who played the biggest role in teaching you the game of golf? My dad introduced me to golf (and pretty much every other sport) when I was 5 or 6. We were members at Earl Grey and I would spend hours at the range and chipping green and finish it off with a mini putt extravaganza around the putting green and the winner would get a plate of bacon and a chocolate milkshake. Long story short, my Dad taught me to gamble… I mean golf at a very young age (don’t tell my mom). What is the best score you have ever shot for 18 holes and at which golf course? 70 at Bootleg Gap in Kimberly, a few 73’s at Earl Grey. What is your favourite golf course and favourite golf hole? My favourite golf course is probably Tobiano in BC. My favourite hole no longer exists but was the

THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB | glencoegolf.org | 16

7th at Earl Grey. It was a beautiful par 3 on the reservoir with an island green type feel. How long have you worked at The Glencoe Golf & Country Club and in what capacity? I am currently in my 7th year at the Glencoe Golf & Country Club and have worked in Food & Beverage and the Golf Shop. This year my role is as Golf Shop Team Lead and we are off to a great start with some awesome returning staff and a few new faces as well. What do you find most enjoyable about your role working on the Golf Operations team? The best part about working at a Golf course are the people. As a member of the Glencoe Downtown Club my entire life, most of the members out here are pretty much family to me. Also, I think most of us can agree there aren’t many places they would rather be than a golf course so everyone is usually in a great mood. There are enough of Steve Thomson’s putters in the pond for me to use the word usually and not always. What do you like to do in your spare time other than golf? I love to play hockey, squash, curling, baseball and brew beer! Congratulations on being a member of the Glencoe’s 2019 Men’s Curling Club Championship team. Was there a highlight or two from that event that stand out to you? We had an exceptional year including an 8-ender and went 23-1 to win the Tuesday Night Men’s League! The highlight of my Club Championship was winning it with my dad. It’s cool enough to have your name immortalized on the Glencoe wall but it’s really special to be up there with my Dad.

lthough we can see many areas of turf affected by winter the overall conditions across the property are well ahead of last years start. Thank you, Mother Nature, for a much calmer start to the season, despite the recent snow.

Brock Coates, AGS Head Superintendent bcoates@glencoe.org

As the grass starts to grow and the property turns colour, the Turfcare team will hard at work perfecting bunkers, cleaning up all the detail work and starting the agronomic practices. Fairways on the Bridges and Meadows have had a build up of thatch over the years and are due for some attention. Frequent sanding, aeration and material removal will be taking place early in the season. Although the initial disturbances will be noticeable, all surfaces will be back to expected conditions for the prime playing months of the season.

Projects and focus points you can expect to see throughout the summer will be as follows • • • • •

Creek work Addressing some Meadows bunkers Fairway and Approach expansions Forward tees Expanding Low Input Areas

Each member of the Turfcare management team will be submitting Flag articles on interesting turf topics all season long so stay tuned!

FROM THE TEACHING CENTRE LAG PUTTING To be a successful putter you must have the right combination of speed and hitting your putt on the correct line. Out of these two skills, I believe that having the right speed is the more important as you need it to have be able to make that putt that hit on the perfect line. Without the right speed, you’ll be leaving your putts long or short and making it hard to make that second putt. Ryan Anderson, PGA, B.Mgmt. Head Teaching Professional 2016 & 2017 PGA of Alberta Teacher of the Year 2016-2018 US Kids Top 50 Instructor randerson@glencoe.org

I follow two guidelines for hitting putts to the hole the correct distance. On putts 20 feet and closer your ball should make it to the hole and end up 18 inches by the hole. On longer putts leaving your putt within 3 feet of the hole. This distance away gives you a good chance of making the next putt. The average on the PGA from 3 feet away is 95 percent.

BROCHURE AVAILABLE ONLINE AND AT THE GOLF SHOP

Here are two great drills to improve your lag putts over 20 feet: Ladder Drill 1. Start about 30 – 50 feet away from the edge of the green. 2. Putt your first ball as close to the edge of the green as possible. 3. Repeat without going past your last putt. 4. See how many times you can do it before you end up 10 feet away from where you are standing. 5 in a Row 1. Start about 30 feet away from the hole. 2. Hit 5 putts to the hole trying to stay within 3 feet of the hole. 3. Measure putts to see if they are all within 3 feet of the hole. If within 3 feet of the hole increase distance by 10 feet to 40 & 50 feet and repeat. 4. Make the drill harder and more realistic by doing your set of 5 putts from various lengths in a random order (ex. 30-50-40-60-20 feet). Both drills are great to work on your distance control and you can keep track to measure if you are improving your lag putting. In on time you’ll be feeling more confident with your putting and lowering your putts per round total.
