ell, hasn’t this been a tease? The hardy of us were out en masse as soon as the course was open. (I loved all the balls sitting on the ice in various places). And then we were closed. To allay our dismay though, we were treated to the fantastic Opening Cocktail Party, our new Executive Chef Jordan’s baptism by fire. We had a great turnout and the weather held. Not so for the wedding the following day where, not only did our Food & Beverage staff again surpass expectations, our grounds crew stayed late into the evening to clear the parking lot and the road so that the wedding guests were able to come and go. As always, our staff were ready and willing to do whatever was required. We are very fortunate. I hope that you have your volunteer hats at the ready! The annual Glencoe Invitational is coming in June and promises to have a line-up of very accomplished young golfers.

And if you needed more evidence that golf is a complete mind game, even for the pros, The Economist magazine published a piece titled “It’s all in the mind.” Researchers from the University of Denver tested the loss-aversion bias involved in the changes of par 5s to par 4s at the major tournaments. They looked at the second hole at Pebble Beach and the ninth at Oakmont as both had been played in two major championships as par 5s then par 4s. Even though the scores to par got unsurprisingly worse on those two holes, the total scores improved by an average of one. It was not explained by better play, nor better equipment, but it seems to have been motivated by the need to protect par. As the piece points out, this is not rational as the players play against each other and not the course. The par should be irrelevant, but, of course, we know it is not.... Better weather is on the way. The leagues are about to begin, and I hope to see you soon!

We are very proud to have been awarded the Canadian Amateur hosting privilege for 2020. Our staff, together with Tourism Calgary, put together a very impressive package. This tournament will highlight our stunning property and facilities as well as give us an opportunity to see some amazing golf on our home course. Cara Bonney-Barr will be the tournament chair and will be looking to fill roles as the planning progresses.

LIGHTNING POLICY

In the event of a lightning strike within an eight-kilometer radius, a police siren will sound. It is recommended shelter be taken. All play will be suspended for all Club leagues and tournaments when a lightning delay is in effect. An intermittent horn will sound when it is safe to resume play.

THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

A Ash Chadha achadha@glencoe.org 403-240-7385

fter an early start to the golf season we experienced typical May weather in Calgary: cold and rainy… with a touch of snow!

In preparation for the flood season, we will be installing the Tiger Dam again this year at the Club along the north road. The installation process begins after May long weekend and should be completed by early June. The Tiger Dam will then remain in place until late early July. During this time, the north road will not be available for use for vehicle or foot traffic. You will also see increased Turfcare traffic through the middle of the property. Thank you in advance for your patience during this time. June is the time of the season when the level of activity in the Clubhouse and on the courses reaches its maximum. You can expect things to be very busy around the Club right through to the middle of September. Please look at the website calendar, posters on the bulletin boards, Clubhouse TVs and social media to know what is and what will be happening at any given time.

The Invitational will take place again this year and we are excited about the field and are expecting to see more great golf from some of the best golfers from across Canada and the USA from June 20 – 22. There is lots of information about the event later in this edition of the Flag for those that want it. Thanks to all the members that volunteer their time to make this event second highest ranked event in men’s amateur golf in Canada. We had our second quarter financial results come out and I am pleased to confirm that ALL our departments remain on budget to date. With hopes of a long and hot summer ahead of us, I‘m confident we will have stable financial results this fiscal. We have lost some of our Monday corporate events this season, so if you know of someone or some groups who are looking to host their corporate event at Glencoe, please have them contact Julie Repp. I have had some members ask about some of the bunker restoration work which we did on some bunkers on Slopes/Lakes courses. These bunkers

were selected based on the poor drainage and disintegrated liner underneath the sand, both items had completely succumbed in these bunkers (as in many other bunkers) due to age. Brock and his team did an excellent job in completely rebuilding these bunkers with installing new drainage and a new liner (sod liner) to keep the rocks down. We expect by mid June once the sod liner gets fully knitted to add sand back into these bunkers and make them fully operational. Also, we did extensive tree removal behind #6 Slopes green. The trees were removed from this area primarily for the health of the adjacent green. The simple fact is that the more sun greens can have throughout the day, the healthier these greens will be. Before such projects (bunkers or tree removal) are undertaken, we discuss the situation, conditions, timing, budgets and staffing with the Grounds Committee and have them consider the situation from a member’s perspective. Once we all have complete education and due-diligence completed we proceed with such projects to continuously enhance our golf course. May also saw arrival of our new golf cart fleet. At this time, we only purchased 80 of these new carts which are fitted with cushion seats and USB ports. Our white carts will now be used primarily for access to the Practice Facility by members and the new green carts will be for member use on the golf course. These next four months are the busiest of the season at the Club. I ask that you please contact me with any comments, good or bad, that you have so that they can be dealt with immediately. We need your feedback so that we can consistently deliver the service you, your family and guests expect and hopefully, much more than that. I am excited by what I have seen thus far this season and hope you are too… we want you to want to be here because of the great experiences you receive. Have a great month of golf this June!

The Burn Your Bridges event in early May had 32 players and excellent weather for the first time in its brief history. Team Thomson was victorious as they devoured the “Steak & Lobster” while the losing squad looked on in jealously. This is a can’t miss event so be sure to put this on your reminder list for 2020. We have a lot of great events upon us as The Glencoe Invitational tees it up when the best amateurs from Canada and North America take on The Forest. This year, you can have the opportunity to show your support for this great event by taking part in the Invitational Experience. The Experience gets you a round with one of the top ranked amateurs in the event, a guest green fee to be used at a later date, a ticket to Richard Zokols clinic and two complimentary drink tickets on course. If you are interested, please speak with one of your Golf Professionals or any of the Golf Shop staff.

A Erin Murphy Junior Committee

big thank you to all who attended the Junior Opening Mixer in May. Despite the snow this was a great event. We had at least 66 children and their parents come through and it was lovely to see so many new faces. There were a few children who were just being introduced to the game and getting their first set of clubs! It is so exciting to see young people developing an interest in golf and to see the game growing in our young members. All the volunteers and staff brought such energy and enthusiasm to this event, giving our juniors a warm welcome to the Club. What a great way to kick off the season.

This month provides many opportunities for Juniors to get out on the course:

June is here and the season is underway. The weekend Junior Programming is off to a strong start with attendance high in the JPD, JVPD and Swinging Sunday programs. Glencoe Junior Nights on Thursday evenings have also been well attended. Please be in touch with Ryan Anderson or Glen Boswell to learn more about any of our programs.

• Finally, June 26 is the girls Wild Wednesdays. This is a great time for girls to get together on the course, I hear there are often milkshakes involved!

• June 8 is the Mentor Mixer where Juniors are able to play in a team format with one of our Privileged Intermediate players or Professional staff. This is a very popular event so register early! • June 9 brings the Don Price Tournament with categories available for all ages and skill levels. This is a great way for your child to be introduced to tournament play in a fun, kidfriendly environment.

I look forward to seeing you all at our wonderful events this month!

(Ages 6 - 18)

DON PRICE TOURNAMENT Competition is the engine that drives every player’s development in the game. In the Don Price tournament, juniors learn how to score, have fun and succeed in a kid friendly environment. All skill levels are welcome to play in this event. ince my last post for the Flag we are now playing on a full 45 holes. Slopes was the last nine to open May 11 but the wait was worth it. The irrigation system is fully functional, ponds are filling up and water is running throughout the course. Our practice area is now off mats.

Larry Strong Grounds Committee

A lot of you may have seen the Turfcare team has been working hard on refurbishing bunkers on #9 Lakes, plus #1, #2 Slopes. In addition, the treed area behind #6 Slopes green has seen major changes with all the trees and brush removed. Along with being more playable the green will now receive more sunlight and less competition from tree roots. The bunker projects started with removal of the existing sand and exposing the base. Drainage was updated/reworked to ensure water drainage. Some of you may have been surprised to see turf in the bunkers. Once “knit” this layer helps provide a solid base for the sand to sit on and prevent stones migrating up into the sand via frost heaving. New

sand will then go over the turf as the final step. These projects should be completed in two to three weeks weather dependent. I’d also like to highlight the work around #2 Slopes green and fringe. Roots were starting to take over the connecting area between the second green and third tee box. Several poplars were removed and combined with the renovation of the bunkers these have been welcome improvements. May and June are the rainiest months of the year thus the Tiger Dam will be going up along the north side of the property that borders the Elbow River.

With the cooler than average temperatures in May, turf recovery on The Meadows, especially the front nine, has been slower than expected. Just getting back to normal temperatures will aid in greening up the fairways and rough.

Treat your Dad to an amazing brunch before or after his round at The Glencoe Golf & Country Club!

e have received a lot of positive feedback from the membership regarding course conditions. This is very encouraging news to hear at the start of a new season. We would like to remind everyone of the importance of our golf course etiquette. During the back nine of my first trip around The Forest our group couldn’t help but notice a large quantity of unrepaired ball marks. You could tell that a fair number of these ball marks were quite fresh. We would like to remind everyone of the importance of repairing your ball marks, raking the bunkers and filling your divots with the provided mixture. Sadly, we had to cancel our Gala Demo Day in May due to poor weather. We have rescheduled this event for Wednesday, June 5 from 3 – 7 pm. All our equipment vendors and your entire Professional Team will be on hand to assist you with all your equipment needs. If you need a break from hitting balls as you are trying out some new toys you will be able to enjoy a hot dog and a beverage from the BBQ we will have at the Practice Facility. The early money is leaning towards Gord Newis as the Professional most likely to consume the most hot dogs during this fun event.

On Saturday, June 8 from 11 – 3 pm we will be hosting another FootJoy Fitting Day. A fitting expert from FJ will be at the Club to ensure you are fit into the proper shoe size and answer any questions you may have about the FJ shoe line. Given the walking distance of a round of golf, having properly fitting shoes is very important to avoid discomfort and fatigue. Members may book appointments for this event by phoning the Golf Shop. All FootJoy shoes will be 10% OFF for this day only. June is US Open month and we will see the US Open return to historic Pebble Beach. Previous winners of the US Open at Pebble include Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tom Kite, Tiger Woods, and Graeme McDowell. US OPEN TRIVIA: The first player to ever reach 10 under par in a US Open accomplished this feat at Pebble Beach in 1992. Can you name him?

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD PROFESSIONAL

I Judy Forshner, PGA, BEd Head Professional jforshner@glencoe.org

Best wishes for fabulous golf and may the wind always be at your back.

am very fortunate to work with the Starter/Player Assistant Team here at The Glencoe Glencoe Golf & Country Club. Gerard Gottselig has been a critical and fabulous member of our team for many years and I thought members would like to know a little more about him. We asked him about his past and he provided the following:

Mixed Events Don’t miss the second Mixed Fun Night of the 2019 season. It takes place on Friday, June 7. This Italianthemed event is a 5 pm shotgun on The Meadows followed by dinner, prizes and entertainment. This event is for you and one other couple (guests or members). There is no charge for green fees.

As I enter my 17th year here at the Glencoe, I took some time to look back and see how I arrived at this point in my life. I spent 20 years in the financial industry, the last four as Vice President for Western Ontario and then VP for the Prairie Region. After leaving the financial industry, I started a company reselling long distance telephone services, built it to over 50,000 customers and then sold the company.

Tee It Forward Here at The Glencoe Glencoe Golf & Country Club we promote the Tee it Forward program. This program is designed to help golfers have more fun on the course and enhance their overall experience by playing from the set of tees that is best suited to their abilities. By playing the course at a length that is aligned with their average driving distance, golfers can experience an exciting, new approach to the game that can produce more enjoyment and increase their desire to play more golf. A 2012 survey of Tee It Forward participants indicated that: • 56% played faster • 83% hit more-lofted clubs into greens • 85% had more fun • 93% will Tee It Forward again

I needed something to occupy my time and knew a fellow through my previous business that was a Player Assistant at The Glencoe Golf & Country Club. He mentioned to me that there was a position open and he introduced me to Judy and as they say ‘the rest is history.’ I really enjoy golf and when I first started working at the Club, I would play a few times a week. Unfortunately, I was in an accident in April 2008 and the injuries I sustained have reduced the amount of golf that I am able play. The highlight of my golf here at the Glencoe was a hole-in-one on Slopes #5 in August 2003.

AUGUST 28 TO SEPTEMBER 1 If you would like to volunteer, please go to shawcharityclassic.com for more information.

I enjoy the staff and appreciate the excellent work they do. We have an incredible group of employees who are very dedicated to ensure that the Glencoe members feel like this is their second home. There are several Club members that are now staff and are very impressed with everything the staff members do for the Club. The main role of being a Starter is to meet and greet the members and help them get their round started on time (frost delays being the exception) and to supply them with any pertinent information for the day; cart rules, backroad closure, food and beverage cart availability, etc. One thing that I find very interesting is listening to the stories from the members of past events at the Club. I have heard some very funny ones over the years. My years here have been very enjoyable and I look forward to more of the same.

TURFCARE

@glencoegccturf

WHERE ARE ALL THE RAKES?!

T Brock Coates, AGS Head Superintendent bcoates@glencoe.org

hat is one of the most common comments we receive at the Club. This isn’t an isolated epidemic but rather a widespread industry phenomenon.

Rake placement around the bunkers isn’t an afterthought. Great attention and even some math is used when figuring out proper rake placement. The goal is to ensure that members and guests should never have to walk more than a few paces to leave the bunker in a playable state for the groups behind them. At the beginning of everyday the Turfcare team re-places the rakes in the ideal location for entering and exiting the bunkers. When hitting a shot out of a bunker please enter from the rake location, grab the rake, hit your brilliant bunker shot pin high, then smooth out your foot marks back to the location the rake was originally taken from. This will ensure that the rakes remain in the ideal locations. If you are sure the rake has been left in an improper spot, you can look for the green painted rake placement markers that are around every bunker. I can actually leave a Pitch Mark on The Forest greens! It’s great to hear the positive feedback carrying over from last season when it comes to how The Forest greens are receiving golf shots. We will see some firmer conditions as temperatures get warmer but overall, we very happy where these surfaces are at given their age. There is a huge task the membership and their guests can take on for continued playability of all the putting surfaces, fixing Pitch Marks. We are seeing an alarming increase in unrepaired Pitch Marks. A properly fixed mark will heal in days whereas an unrepaired mark will take several weeks or even months to heal properly. This damage will cause balls to bounce offline and is the prime entry point for weeds like Poa Annua. Please do your part by fixing your Pitch Mark’s (plus a few others!) and returning bunker rakes to the proper locations. These little steps will go a long way towards keeping the course conditions at high levels for all players throughout the day. It will also allow the Turfcare team to focus on other details and practices that will keep the course in the conditions we expect.

DRESS CODE

• Blue Jeans, in good repair are only permissible in the Clubhouse. • Pants/Shorts/Skorts/Skirts that are in good repair. It is advised that skorts/skirts sold in the Golf Shop or major golf retailers would meet both the style requirements and the length of “reasonable standard” regardless of brand and or fit differentials on different body types. • For Ladies, shirts may have sleeves or a collar but must have one or the other. Tank top styles are not permitted.

THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB | glencoegolf.org | 12

• For Men, golf shirts with sleeves and collars are required. Shirts must be tucked in at the waist at all times unless designed to be worn untucked. (Defined as buttoned from collar to hem, hemmed and evenly cut around the bottom.) • Golf footwear with soft spikes or laced athletic running shoes on the golf courses are acceptable. All other styles of footwear would be considered unacceptable.

HORTICULTURE

G

ardening season is officially here in Calgary, and every day I see more people ready to purchase soil for their new raised or in-ground beds. They are often looking for the cheapest place to buy “topsoil” and so I felt this article is timely.

Dani Creighton Landscape Manager dcreighton@glencoe.org

First, a definition: What is topsoil? According to Better Homes & Gardens “Topsoil is the top layer of the earth’s surface. Topsoil is dark in color and high in organic matter, which makes it very easy to till and fertilize ground for growing plants. It is scraped from the ground and sold in bags or bulk, often called ‘black dirt.’ I thought this was an interesting definition, and it touches on the points I want to make. Topsoil is not always dark in color or high in organic matter. In the Calgary area, topsoil is usually what is scraped off by developers as they create new neighborhoods and may not be very high in organic material at all. (It may also incorporate a lot of the sub soil, as our topsoil is not always very thick.) As the soil is processed, the soil biology is destroyed, and many of the volatile nutrients, such as nitrogen, are lost to the air. What is left is generally very high in clay, and low in organic material or humus. This is in a local garden. You can see the clay that has baked in the sun, and the weeds that are trying to grow. So what? Well, let’s talk about which plants grow well in degraded soil. Weeds! The initial colonizers of degraded soil are weeds such as pigweed or stinkweed. They don’t mind the lack of organic material too much. They can grow well in compacted soil. The high clay content of our local soil means that topsoil is likely to become compacted very easily. Clay is the smallest particle, and it bonds easily together. This is why potters use it to make dishes. When it is protected from the sun by a thick layer of decaying organic material, and the soil biology is intact, clay can be an excellent growing soil, as it holds nutrients and water well.

However, once it loses that protective layer and the aeration caused by worms and other organisms, clay can bake in the sun and become hard-pan, which prevents water and plant roots from penetrating and leading to the inability of plants to access the nutrients in it. Does tilling help? Well, yes, in the short-term tilling can loosen the clay and allow roots to penetrate, but it does nothing to help the soil biology recover, and the clay will bake again on the first sunny day after a rain. What are the alternatives? In my experience, most gardens do not need more topsoil—because they already have enough clay. Instead gardens need that rich layer of humus, also known as compost materials. Commercially available compost will add nutrients and organic matter to the soil below, and if it is fresh and alive, it will also contribute to the soil biology. So, I don’t need topsoil? Probably not, unless you’re using it for grading or building up the level by more than 3-4 inches. That clay content works really well for creating the structure of your land, as compost just sloughs off in the rain. However, if you’re creating a raised bed to grow vegetables, or planning to add sod, or creating a bed to grow trees, shrubs or perennials, compost is a must. What do I do if I’ve already added topsoil? If you’re finding the soil is really high in clay, very heavy and hard, then you can add a product called zeolite. It is a volcanic mineral that breaks apart clay both physically and chemically. Zeolites have a porous structure that can accommodate a wide variety of cations, such as Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+. Clay soil is lacking in cations which is what makes it difficult for plants to grow. By adding zeolite or just plain calcium (eggshells) or magnesium (Epsom salts) you will be increasing the cation exchange capacity and therefore the soils ability to share nutrients with plants. Otherwise, simply add two to four inches of compost and turn it into the clay soil and top it all off with a layer of mulch. This will protect the soil from the baking sun and will allow nutrients to penetrate below as the soil organisms create micro pore space. When in doubt, add organic matter!

FROM THE TEACHING CENTRE

T

o create maximum distance in your shots you will need to learn how to build resistance in the lower body while trying to be relaxed and tension free at the same time. Learning these two skills will help you generate more power and distance on all your full swing shots.

Ryan Anderson, PGA, B.Mgmt. Head Teaching Professional 2016 & 2017 PGA of Alberta Teacher of the Year 2016-2018 US Kids Top 50 Instructor randerson@glencoe.org

Create resistance with your body Golf swings come in many shapes and sizes. Some players have small backswings and others have big long backswings that swing past parallel. The key to finding the perfect size backswing for you is to swing back as far as your flexibility will allow without cheating. To do this, focus on creating resistance by rotating your upper body against your lower body during the backswing. When starting the backswing with your upper body, the lower body is trying to stay stable and quiet. The best way to get this feeling is to try and keep your trail leg almost motionless by keeping it in a similar position to your address position during the backswing. Creating this resistance, you are building a power source that you’ll be able to use in your downswing. Your backswing is done when you’ve turned to the limit that your flexibility will allow. To check that you’ve created this resistance, swing to the top of your backswing and hold—it should feel difficult to hold for more than a few seconds. Once you’ve completed your backswing, it is time to use your lower body to turn to the target by using your core and pelvis. This will create the proper sequence and you’ll find a new source of power in your shots. Relax Now that you’ve created some resistance it is time to focus on trying to be relaxed and tension-free during your swing. A common fault when hitting golf shots is to grip the club too tight. Too much tension restricts movement and slows the golf swing down. Try loosening your grip and taking the tension out of your shoulders and forearms. Adding a waggle like Jason Dufner will help you stay relaxed prior to hitting your shot. Finally, prior to hitting the shot, take a deep breath in and exhale—now you are ready to begin your swing. Sweet swinging!
