often reflect on what a beautiful property it is that the Golf Club occupies. When we are able to share it with visitors, their enthusiasm gives added emphasis to the reflection. A lovely hot summer day, dodging the swirling thunderstorms or heading out after a good rain, all hold their special moments. On a Wednesday evening in late June our group waited out the storm and headed out after a lovely dinner provided to the g.l.e.e. group. It was very still, and the course was pretty quiet, save our foursome. The geese were lying quietly by the pond when the furor arose... and the coyote was in their midst. No dinner for the coyote, but a National Geographic moment for us. Then the hawk swooped down with dinner in its talons. Pretty amazing. As the Member Guest tournaments for the various categories approach, we have the opportunity to share our great facility and hospitality with our friends. Our staff do such an exemplary job in making these such memorable experiences. I’m sure that this year will be no different (except, of course, Judy’s outfit). A huge thanks to all the staff and members who came out to the Canada Day festivities. It was especially great to the see the younger crowd out in full force including a number of Glencoe Club members who took advantage of the invitation to come to the Golf Club.

There were so many great touches however the one that struck many of us was the biggest ever sandbox created in the bunker. A number of us have changed our attitude towards sand traps... if you see us with our shoes off in the bunker, you will know why. Perhaps the addition of a few little shovels and pails would help to lighten the moment. For the past year the Board and Management have been working on conceptual designs for two potential projects: A Clubhouse renovation as well as a reconfiguration of the staging area between Outdoor Services building and the Clubhouse; and a Turfcare Auxiliary Building located between the Bridges nine green and the Practice Facilities. At the Board retreat in January the Board reviewed the conceptual plan and directed Management to contract consultants to develop detail design to get to the point that we can get a firm budget number for the project. The Board has not made a decision to build, only to get a firm budget. We expect to have a tender budget in mid-September and the Board will then review and determine if it is financially feasible to begin construction of the project. More detailed information on the projects is available on the website including floor plans and renderings. It is hard to believe that, as you read this, summer is hurtling towards fall. As we know, the best golf weather is probably ahead. Enjoy!

Phenomenal course conditions combined with great F&B service made up for a great weekend. Special thanks to Ashley and Gord for there efforts in organizing this event.

Please join me in congratulating Paul Kenno on being appointed as the new Food & Beverage Manager at Royal Colwood Golf Club in Victoria, BC. This is a great professional move for Paul who has been with Glencoe for five golf seasons. Paul has family on Vancouver Island and is expected to start his new job is late August. Paul has been such a steady hand in our F&B operations, always playing “chief host” providing exceptional service to our members and being a great teammate. We wish Paul the very best in his new role and are rooting for his continued success. For the past year we have been working on conceptual designs for a Clubhouse renovation and on a new Turfcare Auxiliary Building behind nine Bridges. The Clubhouse reno involves slight expansion as well as a reconfiguration of the staging area between the Outdoor Services building and the Clubhouse. The new Turfcare Auxiliary Building is being planned to be used as a mixing station for all the food & medicine which we put out on the course, plus act as a storage for some of our turfcare equipment during winter months. The firmer plans will also be reviewed by the Golf Committee but prior to exposing the plans to the membership, the Board wanted to make sure that there was a firm budget and a feasible plan to finance the project. If it is not financially feasible to build or renovate at this time, the project will be shelved until becomes feasible to do these projects. We had a great time hosting the Men’s Member Guest and Ladies Member Guest (both sold out with waitlist). Thanks to both Men’s and Ladies Committees for all their help in planning these two big events. We are always excited and look forward to giving our esteemed guests a taste of Glencoe hospitality. As we enter the last couple of months of the season, I am asking for your help in letting us know how we are doing in meeting and hopefully exceeding your expectations. In the event of a lightning strike within an eight-kilometer radius, a police siren will sound. It is recommended shelter be taken. All play will be suspended for all Club leagues and tournaments when a lightning delay is in effect. An intermittent horn will sound when it is safe to resume play.

t will soon be August, and the endless thinking on how to spend the summer is working overtime to get all those thoughts into action plans. How quickly the golf season can pass by. July had some big name sporting events. Kick starting the month was the “all white” event of Wimbledon, which provided some exciting moments in tennis. Then moving into sightseeing the French country side as one watch cyclists endure climbs, and weather as they push for precious seconds in the Tour de France. Then the British Open was queued up. Known simply as the “Open” golf ’s oldest tournament and challenge; this year’s Open lived up to that challenge. The golf gods let the elements and tough course conditions determine the winner, the champion golfer of the year. Song could be heard as Shane Lowry, the Irishman not far from Royal Portrush walked to the #18 green on Sunday to claim the championship of the 148th British Open. There is still time for you to hone your golf skills and be a champion. Our Club Championships are

coming. There may not be a song on 18 as you walk to the final green, there may not be a trophy for you, but there will be the self-fulfillment that you participated. You took part in one of your Club’s premier events. You had a few laughs and fun with your fellow members. There is a category to fit each ability and a stableford format for those that prefer. Keep the weekend of August 23 - 25 available, you can sign-up online. As July cames to a close we saw a mixture of weather in Calgary, some good for television watching and some more for enjoying the outdoors. No matter how or what you spent your time doing this July I hope you found it enjoyable and healthy. As always, I and my fellow Committee Members are always looking for new ideas, so please don’t hesitate to send us a comment card. We always want to hear what the members are thinking. Saturday’s agenda includes a full slate of tee times on The Meadows while a shotgun format will be played on The Forest. This is where the stableford participants join the golfing fray as their 36-hole weekend competition kicks off. All of this is followed by an incredible lunch buffet and the annual Glencoe Horserace open to all participants. For all those who have never played in a horserace, this is a can’t miss event, so saddle up with a partner and enjoy the ride.

With all the amazing events in 2019, the best is yet to come with the Men’s and Ladies’ Club Championships set for August 23 – 25. An event aimed at all skill levels where players can choose to grind over that three-foot putt to save their quadruple bogey in our traditional stroke play format or enjoy a less stressful round in our stableford points format.

Championship Sunday is undoubtably one of the best days of the year out at the course. Final round tee times on both courses with everything wrapping up on the #18 green of The Forest course where complimentary food and beverages will be served, while powercarts are provided and encouraged for people looking to go watch the final groups battle it out in the stroke play competition. When all is said and done, all new flight champions and our new Men’s and Ladies’ Club Champions are crowned as we close out the summer schedule in style!

The stroke play event will be a three-day affair starting on Friday August 23 at 1 pm. The event really kicks off that night with our annual Champions Cocktail Event where we honour Glencoe’s history and our past champions. Jammed into this great night, there will be food and beverages consumed while you can battle your buddies out on the lawn with various skills challenges including a closest to the pin down to the #9 green on the Lakes.

adies, August is here! That means a month that is chalk-a-block full of amazing events coming your way!

Before we get to that though, I just wanted to extend a big thank you to the Ladies who were involved in putting on the Ladies Member Guest. It was an enormous hit, as always! Special thanks to Joanne Feick and Tricia Gray who continuously do an outstanding job putting this event together for our Ladies and their guests! Solheim Cup goes August 9 – 11. This super exciting event features two teams going head to head in three different match play events. The Black team will be trying hard to battle back to win after losing to the Green team last year (and the year before that, and the year before that….) Can the Green team make it a five-peat this year?! We’ll find out! Senior Ladies Club Championships are August 13 and 14 and will feature some amazing golf. Bonnie Zaoral and Tracye Olser were our Senior and Masters Champions in 2018. Can’t wait to see who takes home the top prizes this year! Club Championships will be held August 23 – 25 and both the Ladies and Men’s Committees are working extra hard to make this the event of the season! Jordan Matheson was our 2018 Champion and we are excited to see another battle out there this year. Whether you’re playing in the stroke play or stableford event, you are sure to have an amazing weekend (weather guarantee not included ). A couple other events not to miss this month are the Wednesday Evening Member/Friend Event and the Glen Derby. The Member/Friend is happening on August 14. This fun two-person team event allows Ladies to bring out a guest for 9-holes followed by dinner. Fun is the order of night! The Glen Derby is on August 27 and is a morning full of fun and horsey betting! If you haven’t played before, consider this your warning! This exciting

team competition is followed by luncheon and that’s when the real competition begins! September… (I can’t believe I’m writing about September already!) is when we hold our annual Ladies Member/Member Triad and Closing Luncheon. This amazing event, held Saturday, September 7, is open to all our Ladies and we encourage you all to grab a partner and sign up! If you want to make a new friend, please sign up as a single and be ready to mingle! This is a netted event where we play three different formats, six holes each! Lots of fun, food and of course, wine will be served up that day, along with the closing prizes and mentions from some of our year-long competitions! Let’s Play the Team Way continues to be going strong, with the Red team leading at the time of print! All the events that were mentioned above are eligible to garner your team points, so make sure to sign-up online! chool may be out, but July was still a busy month for our Glencoe Juniors. The first week of July you may have noticed as a large group of our Juniors, led by Ryan Anderson, explored all aspects of the golf course during the Full Week Golf Crew. This gang got to tour Outdoor Services, take part in a baking competition, film golf training videos and they played a little golf too. Team Glencoe had a busy month hosting Country Hills and Pinebrook for the Calgary Junior League and got to play a round at Springbank Links. This league is a very fun way for kids to meet golfers from other clubs and have the opportunity to play a variety of courses in a scramble format. If your child will be 8 – 13 years old next golf season, please speak to Glenn or a Junior Committee Member to learn more about this league.

Our Glencoe crew clearly knows how to make Juniors feel welcome. In addition to hosting the Junior Ryder Cup, Glencoe was also host to the PGA of Alberta Pro-Junior in July. It was so fun to see PGA of Canada Professionals and Juniors from around the province out to play a round. The matching outfits were a hit and the enthusiasm for

the game demonstrated was infectious. Thank you to Glenn and all the Glencoe staff who made this a successful event. All hands were on deck to greet visitors, many of whom had travelled from the farthest corners of Alberta. Unfortunately, our Junior Bring a Friend event did not run in July due to the limited number of registrations. This was a new event introduced by the Junior Committee this year to give juniors the opportunity to bring a guest to the course for 9 holes of golf followed by a BBQ at the range. The Committee will evaluate the feedback we have received to see if we can improve attendance for this event in the 2020 golf season. Junior Club Championships is August 17 and 18. With 5, 9 and 18-hole options there are opportunities for all ages and skill levels in this tournament and we would love to see your child participate. Registration is online or through the Golf Shop. The final Junior event of the season, the Mother/ Daughter Father/Son tournament takes place September 8. Mark your calendars!

estaments to the quality of any golf course are the opinions of guests who experience the layout. I recently played The Forest with a guest who plays a lot of golf in the Calgary area through his participation in Interclub.

Larry Strong Grounds Committee

He has seen the progression of The Forest since the devastation of the 2013 flood. In his opinion our Forest is the best course in the Calgary area. Sometimes for us as members we take for granted the quality of this track. In addition, he marveled at our practice area, which is one of the best in Western Canada. Preserving and enhancing the quality of our 45 holes, range and grounds in general takes dedicated staff. We’re very fortunate to have a team of employees that day-in and day-out take care of the property in all kinds of weather conditions which has been a challenge with all the moisture in June and July. And speaking of challenges the volume of geese on the property have been reduced due to the efforts of a wildlife management company that relocated several of them.

On the Committee’s recent tour, we looked at the Native Areas. Examples of these include #2 and #7 Lakes and #7 and #8 Slopes. Not that we’re trying to compete with the rough similar to Portrush, home of this year’s British Open but it does add a look and feel of a traditional links course. We also stopped by Forest #6 to review recent efforts to remove Poa. This is painstaking work to ensure it doesn’t encroach, which would compromise ball roll when putting. With all the rain members may have noticed The Forest greens playing a little slower but with drier weather they will speed up. I am also pleased to report The Meadows fairways that had some winter kill earlier this season are now back to normal. As we are now at the midpoint of the golf season looking back several projects are shaping up nicely. These include the bunker rehab on Slopes, improved drainage on Meadows, planning for the new Turfcare Auxiliary Building behind the practice area and cart path maintenance/curbing. Also, it’s very nice to see the Tiger Dam coming down for another season. Looking forward, the Practice Area East Tee is expected to be re-surfaced in mid-August.

e are very fortunate to have a great team of Golf Shop Assistants for the 2019 season. This team plays a huge role in the success of both the Golf Shop and the golf events we run throughout the season. We have four returning team members and their experience will be an asset to the newcomers and the Professional Team. We always tell our new Golf Shop Assistants that their biggest challenge is learning the vast amount of information required in their role. If we are lucky, we have one of these folks with us for three or four seasons which helps them gain all the knowledge required. With the Golf Shop being the center point of member contact this team will field questions about every aspect of the Club’s operations. In a busy 30 minutes they might need to know how to register a member for an event, know what food is being served for next week’s Ladies shotgun, how the Club’s new app works, what days a Semi-Active Spousal member is allowed to play and what time the Professional’s do club fittings on Saturdays. In addition to basic Golf Shop operations this team provides a great deal of help to the Professional Team. Each Golf Shop Assistant will be involved assisting the Professionals with inventory control, promotions and the running of tournaments and leagues. ABBIE GINGRAS

Why were you interested in the position at the Glencoe? My family golfs at the Glencoe and I have heard great things about working here from the staff. I became interested in the position because the community here is so genuine and supportive of each other which makes this such a positive work environment. What has been the most challenging for you to learn in your new role? The most challenging thing that I’ve had to learn since working here is probably being able to figure out our computer system Northstar since it isn’t always consistent. What has been the most enjoyable part of the job? What I have enjoyed the most has really been connecting with the members and getting to know lots of different people. I am a very social person, so coming into work and being able to meet new people has been great! What are your favourite leisure time activities? In my spare time I enjoy doing classes like spin, circuit and barre because I like to try and stay active. I also appreciate the time spent with my friends and family. What advice would you give to someone joining the Golf Shop team? It takes time learning everything in the Golf Shop, you won’t have all the answers right away so don’t be afraid to ask for help! JOHN BOSWELL

Why were you interested in the position at the Glencoe? I had work experience in a Golf Shop, having worked for a number of years at Lynx Ridge. The Glencoe has always been a great place to golf and eat and I’ve been lucky enough to have my Dad, Glenn, have me come play with him and the family during the summers. I was thrilled to hear about an open position, as the Glencoe is a world-class Golf Club.


GOLF SHOP What has been the most challenging for you to learn in your new role? With so many members here, I would say learning and remembering people’s names.

Glencoe as I have worked the previous two seasons in the backshop and grew up as a Junior at the Club. I always heard such great reviews about working in the Golf Shop and influenced me to want to work here.

What has been the most enjoyable part of the job? My co-workers and the members are all fantastic.

What has been the most challenging for you to learn in your new role? Learning how the Northstar program works and getting proficient with it so I can efficiently help members.

What are your favourite leisure time activities? I love watching and playing sports, music, and hanging out with friends. What advice would you give to someone joining the Golf Shop team? These are nine-hole events on The Meadows for you and one other couple (guests or members). The theme is Asia and it is a 5 pm shotgun with dinner, entertainment and prizes to follow. There is no charge for guest green fees. A very fun evening out with friends! The leagues all wrap up for the season the second week of September. These include Ladies’ Day and Men’s Night on Tuesdays, g.l.e.e. Ladies and Men’s Afternooners on Wednesdays, Men’s and Ladies Seniors on Thursdays, and Black Tee Men’s and White Tee Ladies leagues on Fridays. We thank all that took part in the leagues this season. Your participation is greatly appreciated.

CELL PHONE POLICY

One of the most interesting par stories of the season may belong to one of the players in the Glencoe Invitational. He pulled his tee shot on the fourteenth tee of The Forest and the ball ricochet off one or more trees and ended up on the fifteenth green. The player then took a drop off the green, proceeded to lay up down the fifteenth fairway, on the fourteenth green in 3, and two putted for his 5. Routine par! Following on the heels of the 2019 Rules of Golf rule changes, there will be a new handicap system as of January 1, 2020. Rather than the six handicap systems currently used world-wide, there will be a single World Handicap System. It will provide all golfers with the ability to compete on any course in any format on a level playing field. Some of the changes will include: • The current number of holes needed to establish a handicap will be reduced from 90 to 54. • The maximum handicap for both men and women will be increased to 54.0 to encourage more golfers to keep a handicap. This will allow them to track their performance to increase their enjoyment of the game. • An average of a golfer’s eight best scores from their last twenty will be used rather than the best ten from their last twenty. • Net double bogey will the maximum score on a hole for handicapping purposes. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A GREENSKEEPER 3:30 AM The alarm goes off and it’s time to start your day. Sneak around the house to not wake anyone up while grabbing a coffee.

5:45 AM Although it can be a challenge, we hope that by now all 80+ staff are out on course maximizing our maintenance window ahead of the first groups of golfers.

4:15 AM Arrive at the Club to open the gates, it’s a 50/50 chance that another manager is already on the property! 4:30 AM After getting the coffee brewing (very important) it’s time to gear up and take a look around the course. Even in the morning darkness you can get a sense of what might have changed from the night before. Has Mother Nature brought down a tree or just debris from the over night storm? Can the scheduled maintenance go ahead as planned or does the plan need to change? Has an irrigation head stuck up running and washed out a fairway or bunker? A quick morning tour gives us these answers. We can now make the best plan for the day ahead. 5:00 AM It’s time for a quick stand up meeting to decide if we are all good to execute the plan made the day before. 5:15 AM It’s now time for some of our operators to head out on the course and start mowing. Although some were waiting for the gate to be opened it is finally light enough to safely get out onto the property. 5:30 AM Front line staff receive their tasks from the job board and some further instructions from the management team before heading out to get the courses ready for play.

DRESS CODE

• Blue Jeans, in good repair are only permissible in the Clubhouse. • Pants/Shorts/Skorts/Skirts that are in good repair. It is advised that skorts/skirts sold in the Golf Shop or major golf retailers would meet both the style requirements and the length of “reasonable standard” regardless of brand and or fit differentials on different body types. • For Ladies, shirts may have sleeves or a collar but must have one or the other. Tank top styles are not permitted.

5:45 AM – 1:30 PM This is go time! On the property we are assisting front line teammates with their tasks, calling audibles where needed and putting out whatever fires that inevitably come up. This is the best time of the day and it always goes by in the blink of an eye. 1:30 PM – 2:00 PM Time to say goodbye to the front line staff, then sit down and plan the following day. By far the most important time of day. Making sure we have the best plan in place is paramount to maximizing our time on the property ahead of golfing traffic. 2:00 PM and onward Once the plan is set, the management team will head back out on course to finish any of their unfinished projects, hand water greens or start something new on the never-ending list. Playing nine holes of golf isn’t unheard of either! Coming back in the evening to get some extra water on the turf or utilizing the golfer free time to apply products on greens or tees isn’t typical everyday but happens a few nights a week whenever it makes sense. The commitment from every member of the Turfcare team, be it front line staff, equipment technicians, landscape and the management team is unbelievable. Their hard work, specialized skill set and tremendous attitude is on display day in and day out across the entire property.

• For Men, golf shirts with sleeves and collars are required. Shirts must be tucked in at the waist at all times unless designed to be worn untucked. (Defined as buttoned from collar to hem, hemmed and evenly cut around the bottom.) • Golf footwear with soft spikes or laced athletic running shoes on the golf courses are acceptable. All other styles of footwear would be considered unacceptable.

any plants considered to be weeds are actually herbs – rich in proteins, minerals and other nutrients. They’re also free and, most importantly, tasty. Here’s a guide to harvesting an overlooked bounty of easy-to-spot and all-toocommon specimens, beyond dandelions. So, put away the herbicide and get picking!

BUBBLES, BLOSSOMS, BUMBLE BEES & BUTTERFLIES! AUGUST 15 3 – 5 pm the Golf Shop Courtyard Join our Landscape Manager, Dani Creighton, as she tours you through some of our flower beds around the Club. An overview about the various stages of growth and the future plans/designs of these planting beds!

Often mistaken for chamomile, pineapple weed grows along roadsides or driveways. I find that it’s tastiest in spring but good in summer, too. The flowers, dried or fresh, also make a delightful tea.

LAMB’S QUARTERS A close relative of spinach, this weed grows in most gardens. It’s delicious sautéed or boiled and its leaves, shoots, seeds and flowers are edible. Harvest this weed early, so its roots don’t consume other plants. Lamb’s quarters can quickly take over your garden. It’s also tastier when young. Snip the top six- to eight-inches of the plant. If the stem doesn’t break easily, you’ve waited too long and it will be tough to eat. Lamb’s quarters can contain a lot of oxalic acid, which can cause kidney stones or digestive issues. Cooking will destroy much of the acid. Use lemon juice as a neutralizer if using the plant raw in smoothies or juices.

STINGING NETTLE

GARLIC MUSTARD

Nettle leaves are delicious, whether steamed, boiled or sautéed, and they are excellent in soups, stir-fry’s and smoothies. Nettles are packed with vitamins. The best time to harvest them is in early spring, when the leaves are most tender (older growth tends to be bitter).

This invasive species grows almost anywhere and is particularly common in Edmonton and St. Albert. According to the Alberta Invasive Species Council, Garlic mustard releases chemicals into the soil that inhibit the growth of native species. The Government of Alberta has designated it as noxious, meaning all parts of the plant need to be killed. So, let’s eat!

Before you tuck in, you’ll have to overcome one barrier: the nettle’s ferocious stings. I recommend thick gloves when harvesting; keep them on when collecting nettles and during blanching. Boiling the plant for two minutes will remove the stings.

For people, garlic mustard is very healthy. It’s another leafy green similar to spinach. Every part of it, from roots to seeds, are edible. The tastiest part is the stem, especially steamed or sautéed and drizzled with olive oil or butter or chopped up raw and added to soups, salads and other dishes. The leaves and flower buds can be used for Pesto or Hummus. Harvest the top foot of the stem, preferably once flower buds are visible.


HORTICULTURE TIPS FOR THE FIRST-TIME FORAGER Before heading into nature to collect wild groceries, there are a few factors to keep in mind. Do your homework. Never pick or eat a plant you can’t identify. Several edible weeds have toxic look-alikes. Use a reputable foraging guidebook or plant identification app, and take classes or hire a professional guide to teach you. Go organic. Be sure the plants have not been sprayed with pesticides or herbicides and are free of livestock waste or agricultural run-off. Remember, collecting plants from protected areas, public parks or conservation zones is often prohibited.

Cut carefully. Weeds have natural defences to ward off insects and predators. Some of these can make the plant not taste that great. So, when cutting the leaves, make sure to slice carefully, so you do not trigger these defence mechanisms. Use a sharp utensil so you don’t bruise the plant. Do a taste-test. Once you source an edible weed, sample a small amount to make sure you like it before you spend a lot of time harvesting. Eat small quantities when introducing wild plants into your diet to ensure they agree with your system.

Pick them young. Younger plants generally taste better. Avoid thick stems, most of which are too tough to digest.

YAPPY HOUR On Thursday, July 18, we welcomed members of our Club and the downtown Glencoe Club to bring their dogs to the course and go on an adventure. Taking the back road to the rain shelter on Forest #12, the 15 dogs and their owners played games and had a nice cocktail hour along with appies and treats for the pups. It was a great way to socialize and meet new people and their pets! If you have a dog and would like to join in for next season, this is a great way to meet members and make connections.

ow, it’s August already? That was a quick busy month of July. We started off the month with our Canada Day Festivities down at the Practice Facility. This was a spectacular family forward event. Not being deterred by a challenge we hosted our Ladies Member Guest, Men’s Member Guest and Mixed Fun Night all back to back. Thank you to our amazing Golf Shop Team led by Judy who invests so much of her time to ensure the successful execution of these events. Y

ou’ve just hit your approach into the sand next to the green and you need to get the ball close to save/keep your round going. Reading this, does it make you eager to hit the shot or are you hiding behind your bag praying to the golf gods to be kind to you? If you have the right technique you can get the job done without having to stress about it.

Start with club selection. Picking the right one matters. If you don’t have a lot of green to work with you should pick the highest lofted club in your bag. A 60 degree would be great in this situation or if you don’t have one, try opening your 56 degree sand wedge up slightly. If you have more of the green to work with a typical sand wedge should do the trick and if you have a lot of green to work with a gap or even a pitching wedge will help get the ball out and give you the distance you need on the shot. Setup is everything. Setup correctly and you’ll make it easier to hit proper bunker shots. Below are six key points to setting up to hit your best bunker shots. 1. Ball position: The ball should be placed closer to the front foot. Ideally it is 1-2 inches off the instep of the target foot. 2. Slightly open club face: This helps use the bounce of the club in the sand. 3. Slightly open stance: This helps offset the slightly open club face making the ball travel in the direction you want. In addition, it helps create a naturally occurring steeper swing plane. 4. Stance: Snuggle in the feet into the sand and make the feet slightly wider than shoulder

width. A wider stance gives you more stability and lowers you just a little which will help get the club down into the stand easier during the swing. 5. Neutral Shaft/Hands in setup: The end of your grip (top of grip) and your hands should be even with the ball or slightly behind the ball. This will help use the bounce of the club in the sand and make your shots come out higher. 6. Weight distribution: This is one of the most important variables in the whole set up. Weight needs to be more on the front side of the body. I advocate that the weight is approximately 60 percent on the front leg, but I’ve heard other instructors put as much as 80 percent on the front leg in the setup. Keep your shoulders close to level at address and this will help keep more weight on your front side of the body at setup. The swing. Start with hinging the wrist more than your regular shots and swinging the club on a slightly steeper ‘outside to in’ swing path. How far back you swing depends on how far you want your ball to travel. A good follow through is key to getting the ball out of the sand consistently. You want to accelerate and splash the sand an inch or two behind the ball. Keep the swing going by turning your hips slightly so that the club continues to swing to the finish. Practice makes perfect or is it perfect practice makes perfect? Try these tips, but if you are having issues in the bunker, come see one of our PGA of Canada Professionals for a tune up in the sand.
