THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

W Susan Schulli schulli@glencoe.org

ow! The first fall edition of this year’s Flag is here! Fall is generally my favourite time of year to golf, weather permitting. The light in the morning and the evening is lovely and the pace just seems to be different. Any expectations of your game have either been met or forgiven and it is just nice to be outside enjoying the crisp air. By the time you read this, all of the various Club Champions have been decided and the victors will be celebrated at the Member Awards on October 3 at the Golf Club. Also, to be awarded is the recognition award for the Volunteer of the Year, an award that recognizes how integral volunteers are at our Club. We have so many people who give back to our community of golfers. It would be great to see you out there to celebrate all recipients. The Board is still awaiting the cost estimates for the proposed capital improvements to the Golf Club. Thanks to all who have taken time to look at the plans and give us your comments. Based on the cost estimates and the cash flow projections, we will be able to make a decision as to whether or not to proceed. If you have not already had the opportunity to review the proposed additions and changes, I would encourage you to do so by going to our website, everything is listed under the Members tab/ Capital Project Plans. If the decision to go ahead is made, you may see the start of the project very soon. As we wind down the season, be sure to check the updates for the remaining special events. We have had so many successful events this year which have included amazing course conditions, organization and great food. Thanks, as always, to our fantastic staff.

Don’t put those clubs away yet!

Volunteers are needed to fill our Club Committees for the 2020 season. Please contact our General Manager, Ash Chadha for more information and or express your interest. achadha@glencoe.org

ongratulations to Robyn Hemminger and Grace Bell for winning the 2019 Glencoe Golf & Country Club Championship. With great weather, good food and phenomenal course conditions, it was a great championship weekend at the Club. I would like to recognize Brock Coates, Chef Jordan and Jennifer Cox along with Judy Forshner for all their efforts in planning and executing a very successful Club Championship weekend! In August, we also hosted other Club Championship events. Please join me in congratulating Charlie Gingras and Gigi Barr for winning the 2019 Junior Boys and Junior Girls Club Championships. Sandi Maki and Allan Ross for winning the 2019 Senior Ladies and Senior Men’s Championships and Bonnie Zaoral and Ray Lippitt for winning the 2019 Master Ladies and Master Men’s Championships. Cheers to all the winners and thank you to all the participants. We have certainly experienced some “interesting” weather so far this year, too much rain or its been too hot! I hope that we can have a pleasant September to close out the final full month of the golf season. I remain optimistic that we will have a great run of weather until the courses close on October 14. September is scheduled to be another very busy month at the Club. With all the various leagues winding down, we expect to have a very full tee sheet daily. I request that you have patience with access to the courses and food services over the next five to six weeks as we are going to have to deal with frost delays, shortened daylight hours resulting in fewer tee times per day, as well as staff finishing for the season. We will do our very best to mitigate these things, but please be advised that there will be some impacts to our operations going forward. This year, we have had a slow but steady flow of new membership applications, but we still

are looking for more members. I hope that you will consider talking to your family, friends and associates about membership in the Club. I strongly believe that The Glencoe Golf & Country Club has the strongest membership value proposition in the city and will continue to thrive due to our great facilities. End of September our 2019 Trial Membership program will come to an end. This program was offered to Glencoe downtown club members only and we had a total of 38 members make use of this opportunity. By season end, we will know how many of these members wish to continue their membership going forward. As we move to the last full month of the 2019 golf season, the Management team is in full planning and budgeting mode for next season. As we look ahead to 2020, we are going to need some volunteers to work on the various committees at the Club. The committees are: Grounds, Invitational Men’s, Ladies and Junior. If you are interested and would like to know more about volunteering in support of your Club, please let me know. The Committees meet about seven times a year for about one hour per meeting. All Committees contribute greatly to the overall member experience at the Club and it’s a great way to give back to “your” Club. September is a busy month with kids going back to school, winter sports starting at The Glencoe Club and here at the golf Club, leagues winding down and the final rounds completed for the various Match Play Championships. With all this going on, please mark October 3 on your calendar for our Annual Member Awards Night. All the various awards are handed out and it is a great place to recognize your peers. In addition to this, please mark October 24 for the Annual Golf Meeting to be held at the Golf Club. Have a wonderful fall.

In the event of a lightning strike within an eight-kilometer radius, a police siren will sound. It is recommended shelter be taken. All play will be suspended for all Club leagues and tournaments when a lightning delay is in effect. An intermittent horn will sound when it is safe to resume play.

be behind us. The longer rye grass and thick rough on The Meadows has made the straight shot much more rewarding.

The courses are in great condition! Thanks to some rain (LOL) and the hard work of Brock and his team of early risers and dedicated people. The greens on The Forest are receptive and fast, making for some interesting putts. It wasn’t too long ago when members thought these greens were always going to be like a drum. The decisions made six years ago to replace the greens on the newly renovated Forest have come into their own and the years of pain on non-receptive Forest greens may

As the season starts to wind down, I would like members to reflect on what is important to them at the Golf Club. There is a proposed renovation, which can be viewed on the website. I encourage everybody to take a look at this plan and ask – does it meet what you want today? In the future? This is an important time for the Club, as we want our facility to meet the needs of the membership, attract new members, and be something that we all are proud to say is ours. As you review the proposed plan and have questions, please discuss with Board Members and Management. Get their insight and your questions answered. It is your Club.

e are now in the “dog days” of summer. The evenings are coming earlier, cutting into the late day starting tee times. The thought and opportunity is still alive however for one more round better than the last, as we cling to the fading season.

ids are heading back to school and that fluffy white stuff will be sure to fly within the next couple months. The fall finish is upon us as the 2019 golf season is winding down. Don’t cry though, as we still have September left to get in a few more rounds! If we are lucky, we will end the year with some beautiful weather to bring us home. Derrick Newman Men’s Committee

The Men’s and Senior Men’s Member Guest is in the books for another year. Both great events with some of the best value that money can buy. Make sure to add this to the calendar for 2020 if you missed out. Multiple on-course food and beverage stations, cigars and scotch tasting post round followed by a fabulous meal to cap off the night. Sanjay’s Butter Chicken wraps between the 11th and 12th hole still have my mouth watering. Thanks to Gord, Steve, Judy, Ash, the rest of the Golf Professional Team, Bruce and the ODS team, and Brock and the Turfcare crew for bringing these events together and showing our course off for all our members and honoured guests. A special thanks to Bill Levis and Dennis Needham for stepping up and running the Calcutta for the Men’s Member Guest. It’s volunteer contributions like this that make these events even better. We thank you for your assistance in handling all the wagering!

The Glencoe Cup is September 13 - 15 this year. A great event to round out the Men’s program and one you don’t want to miss. This is a three-day event in a Ryder Cup style format. You play alternate shot, best ball and singles matches over the weekend while battling it out against other members on either the ‘A’ or ‘B’ side of the draw. The team draw night is Tuesday September 10 after the Men’s Night Finale. Thanks to Kevin Barr for stepping up this year and taking over the organizational duties after years of commitment from Paul Dame, Dan Moore, and Rick Lea. Congratulations to all who have qualified for the Men’s Night Finale! A season’s worth of commitment to Tuesday night golf will culminate on September 10 full of prizes, great food and tasty beverages. Finally, congratulations to Robyn Hemminger and the rest of the flight winners in this year’s Club Championships! As always, if you have any comments, concerns, questions, or kudos for the Men’s Committee, please don’t hesitate to email, call, or flag me down at the club.

A Erin Murphy Junior Committee

ugust was an exciting month for some of our competitive junior golfers. A big congratulations to Grace Bell, Brooke Frerichs and Carson Rody who were among the hundreds of kids who descended on Swift Current to compete in the Western Canadian Summer Games. We also saw new Junior Club Champions crowned last month. Congratulations to Georgia Barr and Charlie Gingras who won in the Championship flights and congrats to the winners in all event categories. Junior Club Champs is a great way to introduce kids to competitive golf in a friendly atmosphere. This tournament offers a category for players of all ages and skill levels. We would love to see your child out next year. The Junior Committee is always looking for new ways to increase participation in events and encourage our junior membership to make use of our amazing facilities. Trying to remain current,

we are looking for new ways to reach the junior membership with news about upcoming events. We have recently begun posting event dates on Instagram and are looking to gather cell phone numbers for junior members to send out texts reminding them of upcoming events at the Club. If you, as a parent, are interested in having the Club reach your child via text, please send their name and cell phone number to Glenn Boswell at gboswell@glencoe.org. School is back in but there is still one junior event remaining this season. September 8 is the Mother/ Son Father/Daughter event. GROUNDS COMMITTEE

O Larry Strong Grounds Committee

ne of the most rewarding aspects of being on the Grounds Committee is participating in our course tours led by the Turfcare Leadership Team and Management. Our recent tour took us to the first green on Slopes. This challenging hole has seen some recent makeovers this year with bunkers being replaced on the left side of the driving landing area and the trap that guards the right front side of the green. As the days get shorter, we’re reminded of the necessity to get work done on the course postclosing and before the winter winds set in. One of the projects being planned is tree removal on one Slopes. On a course as mature as The Glencoe Golf & Country Club one of the realities is that trees grow and along with that root systems have to fan out in search of water and nutrients. It’s not uncommon for these root systems to extend past the dripline of the branches 2 to 4 times the height of the tree. This results in roots potentially extending out 60 to 120 feet for a mature 30foot evergreen. In the case of #1 Slopes roots are now under the green and trap at the back right of the hole. This fall the Turfcare team will be removing several of the evergreens near the green. Not only will

Back of #1 Slopes showing roots exposed along the green’s apron and fanning out under the bunker

Tree roots exposed between #1 Slopes green and #2 Slopes tee box

MUSIC ON COURSE

#groundscommittee

the trees be cut down but the root systems will be pulled or ground up. Long-term, the health of the green and the apron around it will be in much better shape. Replacement of the back-right trap will follow the same procedure employed for the two other #1 Slopes bunkers completed earlier this summer. In addition, a few trees along the walkway between #1 Slopes green and #2 Slopes tee box will also have to be removed as the root systems are now exposed above ground. Another project in the works is tree and brush removal on the par 3 #5 Slopes. Errant tee shots on the right side either caught the bunkers or landed in thick brush. The plan this fall is to cut back the brush, reshape the bunkers and create a landing area similar to the work done earlier this year on #6 Slopes. Feedback to date for the #6 Slopes brush clearing and tree removal has been positive and we’ll strive to have similar results for #5 Slopes. Similar to #1 Slopes, the root systems from the poplar trees are impacting the health of the green. Combined with the shading of the tree canopy on #5 Slopes has been challenging to maintain healthy turf. Overall course conditions are excellent so let’s get out and enjoy some late summer/early fall golfing!

The playing of music in Powercarts or Pull Carts is permissible so long as the music can only be heard in your immediate area.

GLENCONIAN HIGHLIGHT

CARL WETTSTEIN STARTER/PLAYER ASSISTANT

My, how time flies – I’m just finishing off my 11th year at the Glencoe. After 20 years in the food industry with Burns Meats and 10 years with our own vending company, my wife Sherry and I were fortunate enough to semi retire in 2008. This allowed us more time to travel, volunteer and work at places we enjoy and look forward to coming back to. Three days after pulling the pin on full-time work, I met with Keith and joined the PA/Starter team at the Glencoe. At the course, I usually work as a starter for the (sometimes chaotic) Men’s Night and the (more relaxed) Thursday Seniors mornings. I love talking with members about travel, their plans and sharing favourite destinations and tips.

PRIVACY POLICY

Every year at the Glencoe gets better as we develop and grow friendships with other staff and members. Sherry and I usually spend our summers in and around Calgary. I’ve volunteered with the Calgary Stampede Caravan Committee for 19 years and can be seen at various malls throughout Calgary flipping pancakes during the Stampede. Come the end of the golf season, you can find us travelling with our RV throughout the US, Canada and Mexico, or pet/house sitting trips down-under or abroad with family and friends. Sherry writes a travel blog, now in its 11th year as well, which is the best way to catch up on our travels: sherrytravel.wordpress.com

The Glencoe Golf & Country Club respects your privacy. In creating a sense of community and to share the success of members, we will engage a photographer to take appropriate and professional photographs of Club events from time to time. Please be aware that some of these photographs may be posted to social media outlets such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. If at any time you wish to ensure that your images are not used, please notify the photographer at the event and your privacy will be protected. MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD PROFESSIONAL

I Judy Forshner, PGA, BEd Head Professional jforshner@glencoe.org

t is hard to believe that September is here. We are hoping that there are many more warm and sunny days and rounds of golf to come. Sadly, fall comes with shorter days and the challenges of early morning frost. In a continuing effort to maximize member access, September 29 and October 5 there will be 11:30 am shotguns on The Forest with regular tee times later in the day. September 28 and October 6 there will be 11:30 am shotguns on the Lakes/Bridges with regular tee times to follow later in the day. Speaking of frost, in order to improve communication with the membership, there will be a Players Assistant at the Practice Facility on frost delay mornings with continuous updates as to what time is currently on the first tee. Fall is also a time when we sadly have to say goodbye to many of our seasonal employees. We thank them for the wonderful job that they do and all that they bring to the Club. We wish them every success in the offseason. Congratulations to our latest members of our Hole-In-One Club: »» Fraser MacDonald, #5 Forest on July 22nd »» Dixie Inman, #5 Slopes on August 6th

TURFCARE

@glencoegccturf

SOMETHING IS IN THE AIR As daylight hours wane and morning temperatures are becoming cooler and cooler, it is impossible to ignore the inevitability of what’s around the corner. It truly is hard to think about after having what felt like such an abbreviated summer season, but fall has come knocking at our front door. Just like that favourite neighbour, you can only ignore the pounding for so long before they walk right in. Brock Coates, AGS Head Superintendent bcoates@glencoe.org

The sadness of knowing another season is coming to an end can be dampened by some of the positives that come with this time of year. Shorter days and cooler mornings give the irrigation system a break, as much less water is needed around the property. Growth rates decrease as plants start to concentrate their energy on storing food for winter rather than focused vertical growth. With as many as 50% percent of the staff leaving or have left for the season, reduced mowing schedules are very welcome. Changing colour of the native grasses and trees showcase the beautiful contrast we have across the property. This is also the time of year for playoff baseball, NFL and NHL season openers, and pumpkin spice lattes. So, its not all doom and gloom as we creep towards the end of the season.

A family ent! ev friendly ome! welc All ages ++

There are also few regular consequences of this time of year. The dreaded “F” word! We have our fingers crossed that FROST won’t be playing a major role in day to day operations, but we aren’t holding our breath. As soil temperatures drop, so do seed germination rates. That, coupled with turf concentrated on producing food stores and not sending out new shoots and tillers, recovery from play comes to a halt. This is most noticeable on the driving range and par 3 tees. To combat this, par 3’s may play longer or shorter than normal as tee placements are moved around to areas in best health and we will eventually move to the hitting mats on the range before the season is over. With Mother Nature we are prepared for anything but are hoping for a long and gorgeous autumn.

HORTICULTURE

Dani Creighton Landscape Manager dcreighton@glencoe.org

WHY DO LEAVES CHANGE COLOUR? Every autumn we revel in the beauty of the fall colors. The mixture of red, purple, orange and yellow is the result of chemical processes that take place in the tree as the seasons change from summer to winter. During the spring and summer the leaves have served as factories where most of the food necessary for the tree’s growth is manufactured. This food-making process takes place in the leaf in numerous cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaf its green color. This extraordinary chemical absorbs from sunlight the energy that is used in transforming carbon dioxide and water to carbohydrates, such as sugars and starch. Along with the green pigment are yellow to orange pigments, carotenes and xanthophyll pigments which, for example, give the orange color to a carrot. Most of the year these colors are masked by great amounts of green coloring. But in the fall, because of changes in the length of daylight and changes in temperature, the leaves stop their food-making process. The chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the yellow to orange colors become visible and give the leaves part of their fall splendor. At the same time other chemical changes may occur, which form additional colors through the development of red anthocyanin pigments. Some mixtures give rise to the reddish and purplish fall

THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB | glencoegolf.org | 18

colors of trees such as dogwoods and sumacs, while others give the sugar maple its brilliant orange. The autumn foliage of some trees show only yellow colors. Others, like many oaks, display mostly browns. All these colors are due to the mixing of varying amounts of the chlorophyll residue and other pigments in the leaf during the fall season. As the fall colors appear, other changes are taking place. At the point where the stem of the leaf is attached to the tree, a special layer of cells develops and gradually severs the tissues that support the leaf. At the same time, the tree seals the cut, so that when the leaf is finally blown off by the wind or falls from its own weight, it leaves behind a leaf scar. Most of the broad-leaved trees in the North shed their leaves in the fall. However, the dead brown leaves of the oaks and a few other species may stay on the tree until growth starts again in the spring. Temperature, light, and water supply have an influence on the degree and the duration of fall color. Low temperatures above freezing will favor anthocyanin formation producing bright reds in maples. However, early frost will weaken the brilliant red color. Rainy and/or overcast days tend to increase the intensity of fall colors. The best time to enjoy the autumn color would be on a clear, dry, and cool (not freezing) day.

s we are quickly approaching the final months of golf season, I would like to recap some of the exceptional member events that took place in August!

Congratulations also goes out to those recently awarded Club Champions – Robyn Hemminger, Men’s Club Champion and Grace Bell, Ladies Club Champion!

FARMERS HARVEST DINNER

It was an amazing weekend, full of excitement, thank you to Turfcare for the outstanding conditions of both The Forest course and The Meadows course, as well to Food & Beverage for their contributions to the outstanding food assortment for our members throughout the weekend and to all the Pros and Management team who made the weekend special for our membership.

We saw 40 members participate in the Spruce View Wine Club’s Farmers Harvest Dinner on August 16. The gorgeous set up in the Spruce View Room, done by Courtney Tanaka, hit it out of the park with a rustic look that set the mood for the evening. Not to mention the incredible menu, prepared by Chef Miguel Urrutia, which welcomed ingredients from our friends at Brant Lake Wagyu and Rio Frio Ranch. Every course was a surprise and the presentation was out of this world, the fresh ingredients from Rio Frio made the dishes far exceed any expectations and the final plate that featured the ‘zabuton cut’ wagyu was as soft as butter. The accompaniment of wine from Caparzo ft. Brunello Di Montalcino was perfect with the wagyu. The evening did not disappoint and will not be forgotten as one of the best of the season for our wine club members! The next event now open for registration is our Mystery Wine Club Tour taking place on Friday, September 20. If you are interested in this event or becoming a member of Spruce View Wine Club, please contact Courtney Tanaka at ctanaka@glencoe.org or 587-392-5215.

CLUB CHAMPIONS Congratulations to Sandy Maki (Senior Ladies Club Champion) and Bonnie Zaoral (Senior Ladies Masters Champion). Congratulations to Gigi Barr shooting a personal best of 69 on the final day and Charlie Gingras who won the Ladies and Men’s Junior Club Championships this month! Grace Bell winning the title after making a crucial putt on the second playoff hole to beat Jordan Matheson, made for an exciting Sunday afternoon. Congrats to all Ladies who played in the Medal Play event, you were all very much contenders all weekend long. Robyn Hemminger, teeing off on Sunday knowing he could have potential to catch up to the leading group with, Stu Markevich, Allan Ross and Tom Hogan, made it a tight race right to the 18th hole. With weather delays, Robyn was able to confirm his score with handing in his score card before the storm, where the final grouping had to wait for the horn to be allowed to continue to play on 18. Going back out onto the course in the pouring rain, Allan was one stroke behind of tying up the lead and needed a birdie to cause a playoff as Robyn was ahead by one. Unfortunately, Allan was not able to make birdie in the conditions and made par allowing Robyn to take the title of Men’s Club Champion! Both of our Champions and Runner-Ups deserve a huge congratulations as these were not easy titles, the whole weekend was a marathon and the final day proved to be the most rewarding based on the experience both groups faced. Congrats again to all that participated over the weekend!

The entrance fee at The Glencoe Golf & Country Club is $50,000 + GST. We are pleased to inform you that we will accept a $5,000 deposit for September 30 to secure your commitment for the 2020 season. FROM THE TEACHING CENTRE HOW TO SPIN YOUR SHORT IRONS AND WEDGES MORE

hen the goal is to get your wedge shots to hit the green and stop you will want to try to add more backspin to your ball. Backspin happens when you are hitting down on the ball more and making clean, good contact with the ball prior to taking your divot. Also, it is not necessary to take a big divot as some might think. Instead, we just want to make sure that we have clean ground contact, then make a shallow divot after the ball has been struck. Here are some basics that you’ll want to try to incorporate more spin on your approach shots to the green. 1. Stand taller and closer to the ball. This position will make you swing more upright to create a steeper angle of attack into the ball. The steeper swing plane will help create more backspin on the ball.

3. Play one less club than normal. If the shot is normally a 9 iron, play a pitching wedge and make a more aggressive swing. 4. Add slightly more wrist hinge on the takeaway, then try to make your transition faster from backswing to forward swing while keeping your hands and wrists firm through impact. This extra speed will result in more spin on the ball helping your ball stop faster. If you are still struggling to add extra spin on the ball, another approach would be to play the ball further forward in your stance and you’ll create a higher shot. This shot will come in more vertically and roll out less and if used with the other techniques will enhance the effects of the backspin.

2. Play the ball slightly more back in the stance. Moving the ball back in the setup will naturally make your swing steeper into the ball helping you strike the upper back quadrant of the ball to help put extra spin on the ball.
