THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

WELL, AND SO IT GOES!

T Susan Schulli schulli@glencoe.org

his is my last Flag column as Golf Club President and the time has flown by. The courses are all in exceptional shape as the days are quickly getting shorter. I hope you all have an opportunity to enjoy the last days before closing as fall is a spectacular time of year at the Club.

We have had a year of change (what year isn’t?). We have welcomed our new Chef, Jordan Cameron, to Food & Beverage and he and his staff have done an excellent job. We have lost Paul Kenno and Ashley Van Kroonenburg to great new career opportunities. I’m sure that I have missed others of note; however, it is a tribute to Management that we deal well with change as we move into the end of the season. I have had the opportunity to learn a number of valuable new life skills during my term as President. I am now on Instagram and I played in my first Horserace (and came second, thanks Steve T). I’m pretty sure that I should not be let loose on Twitter however... and, in all seriousness, I have a much deeper understanding of how much it takes to provide the outstanding conditions that we have at our Club on and off the course. It’s a mix of science, art and technology that few of us get to see firsthand. We only get to enjoy the fruits of all the labours of love that happen every day. So, thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving as your President this term. It has truly been an honour and a great experience.

THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

I

t’s hard to believe that the 2019 golf season is coming to an end very soon. September gave us some great golfing weather and I hope you were able to get out on the courses during this last stretch, before our Turfcare team puts the facility to bed for the winter. Please join me in congratulating Brock and his Turfcare team on phenomenal course conditioning.

Ash Chadha achadha@glencoe.org 403-240-7385

I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of our new executive chef, Jordan Cameron, and our new Membership & Marketing Manager, Lisa Rosengarten. Both, Jordan and Lisa started with us earlier this year and they have made a very positive impact on our Club operations. Under Jordan’s leadership food quality, presentation and menu variety has improved along with kitchen organization. Lisa has done well in selling memberships in this tough economic environment, along with continuously looking at ways to make our membership offerings more attractive in this competitive market. I certainly think these two new members of our team will continue to do some great work for our beautiful Club in years to come. As we look ahead to the winter golf season, I want to let you know that the Troon Card is available again. Many members used this card last year with great success. Please contact Julie Repp at our front desk and she will help you out. Please remember that this card is available only to members of The Glencoe Golf & Country Club.

Lately we have been wrapping up our 2019 Committee meetings and I would like to acknowledge and thank all those members who volunteered and gave their time and energy to our Club. It was obvious that here was a group of people that care for each other as well as the Club and that they had a significant role in shaping the Club over their time of service. Thank you! Please consider joining us for the Annual Golf Meeting (AGM) on October 24 at the Golf Club. Also add to your calendars our Annual Family Christmas Parties this December.

All dollars loaded in your

CREDIT BOOK ACCOUNT are now available to be spent in our Food & Beverage areas and in the Golf Shop

As an additional reminder, please note remember that the Food & Beverage operations are open for functions throughout the winter. We are here to host your family event, holiday party or special functions.

In conclusion, have a wonderful and safe winter wherever your travels take you and I look forward to seeing you all back again next spring.

COME SHOPPING OR HAVE DINNER! Check your balance in the Golf Shop or on the My Account page online.

LIGHTNING POLICY

In the event of a lightning strike within an eight-kilometer radius, a police siren will sound. It is recommended shelter be taken. All play will be suspended for all Club leagues and tournaments when a lightning delay is in effect. An intermittent horn will sound when it is safe to resume play.

GOLF COMMITTEE

W Rob Heaton Golf Committee

here has the summer gone? As the days grow shorter and the trees change colours it signals the end of another golf season. The 2019 season will be remembered for the cool and wet, smoke-free days. In fact, there were 71 days of rain this summer. I probably don’t need to remind any of you as golfers those were the days that you would get to the course and decide if you risk going out or go to eat. Let’s hope for an early start and late finish to the 2020 season. Congratulations to our Club Champions for 2019, Grace Bell on the Ladies side and Robyn Hemminger for the Men. This event has become something to look forward to each year with the increased participation. There are a couple of events still ahead: Member Awards evening on Thursday, October 3 and the AGM on Thursday, October 24. The AGM will be held at the Golf Club this year due to the renovations happening at The Glencoe Club. This is the time of year that we are looking for people to participate and be a part of a Committee. This is a great way to meet new people, see and learn how a club of this size operates, and contribute the success of the Club. I hope many of our members will consider becoming a volunteer. It has been an honour for me to serve as your Golf

Committee chair for the past year. If you have any suggestions for next year, let us know as your Committee Members and Management are always looking for ways to improve. This is that final “Flag” of the 2019 golf season. I would like to take the opportunity to say “thank you” to the many Committee chairs that bring great ideas to life. Thank you to the many members that volunteer on Committees, giving of their time so the Glencoe golf community can grow. The many members that volunteer for various events throughout the year. Without these people giving of their time, the Golf Club would not have the thriving community it has today. Of course, great thanks to the people that keep the Club running. Judy Forshner and her amazing team of Professionals, and Brock with his crew that keep the course in the shape and condition we have come to expect. Jennifer Cox and her team in the F&B area that keeps the food and beverages flowing rain or shine. I would like to thank Susan Shulli and Cara Bonney-Barr for their support as I navigate the Golf Committee chair role, and the Administration staff that keeps all this moving forward in a timely manner. Thank-you for a great year!

Volunteers are needed to fill our Club Committees for the 2020 season. Please contact our General Manager, Ash Chadha for more information and or express your interest. achadha@glencoe.org

MEN’S COMMITTEE

WHERE DID THE SUMMER GO? NOT SURE? ME NEITHER.

D

espite not the best weather conditions for the 2019 golf season, we had some fantastic events on the Men’s Calendar this year setting up an exciting 2020 season.

Derrick Newman Men’s Committee

The year was closed out by the Club Championships in late August. Congratulations goes to Robyn Hemminger on his big win. Having played with Robyn in the first round and watching him hole out for eagle on the 11th hole of The Forest, I had a sneaking suspicion it might just be his weekend. With a big 20-foot putt on the 18th hole, Robyn sealed his first ever Club Championship and his name is now etched in Glencoe lore for years to come. The weekend attracted a record number of participants (up 20 percent from years previous), so thanks to all who made the event what it was. We can’t wait to see you again next year! A big thanks to Judy and Gord and the rest of the Golf Professional team for a fantastic year of Men’s programming. The job you do is simply incredible and we are so grateful to have such a talented and tireless group working on behalf of our Men’s program.

DRESS CODE

• Blue Jeans, in good repair are only permissible in the Clubhouse. • Pants/Shorts/Skorts/Skirts that are in good repair. It is advised that skorts/skirts sold in the Golf Shop or major golf retailers would meet both the style requirements and the length of “reasonable standard” regardless of brand and or fit differentials on different body types. • For Ladies, shirts may have sleeves or a collar but must have one or the other. Tank top styles are not permitted.

Thanks to Ash and Julie for all the support from Management and to the Food & Beverage team for stepping up their game this season. Well done! To Bruce and the Outdoor Services team, bravo! Thanks for all you do. Enjoy the winter and hope you don’t have nightmares of cleaning an endless rack of dirty clubs. To Brock and the Turfcare team, wow! The facility is in absolute phenomenal shape from the start of the season through until the end. Your ability to keep it all under control is second to none. Thanks for all your hard work. And finally, thanks to my Vice Captain, Stu Wigmore, and the members of the Men’s Committee. These events don’t create or run themselves and your volunteer contributions are extremely valued. Thank you for all you do and the time you give to this Club. Already looking forward to the 2020 golf season! Have a great winter and stay warm!

• For Men, golf shirts with sleeves and collars are required. Shirts must be tucked in at the waist at all times unless designed to be worn untucked. (Defined as buttoned from collar to hem, hemmed and evenly cut around the bottom.) • Golf footwear with soft spikes or laced athletic running shoes on the golf courses are acceptable. All other styles of footwear would be considered unacceptable.

he Mother/Son Father/Daughter tournament was a great way to wrap up the Junior golf season at the Glencoe. September blessed us with perfect weather and we had an excellent turnout with over 40 adults and Juniors participating. I don’t think the dining room has ever looked better. Glenn Boswell and his team created the perfect Star Wars Cantina and he makes a great Darth Vader. Thank you to the Food & Beverage staff for their creative menu options. I will never look at edamame now without thinking of Yoda. Congratulations to Corey and Carter Code who won in the Father/Daughter category and my son Jack and I were lucky enough to be the winning Mother/Son team. Thanks kiddo, for carrying me to my first and likely only golf tournament win!

always looking for new ideas. If you are interested in being a part of the Junior Golf Committee, please let myself, Ash Chadha or Judy Forshner know. We would love to see you at meetings next year. Thank you to everyone who brought their children out to lessons, events and tournaments this season. Our Junior Glencoe golfers bring such enthusiasm and life to the course and it is wonderful to see little ones embrace this game. They can’t get out there without grown ups to drive them however, so thanks to the parents, grandparents and everyone else who is supporting them! Have a great winter and I look forward to seeing you next year!

t our last meeting of the year the main topics of discussion were centred around the closing of the course. We anticipate (weather permitting) that Slopes will close following play on October 6, and the Lakes/Bridges/Forest following play on October 14. The Turfcare team has a short window to “put the course to bed” which includes decommissioning the irrigation systems, application of plant protection products to prevent snow mold, tarping greens and finally sand application on all the fairways. In parallel with the course shutdown, work will commence on the tree removal and bunker renovations on Slopes #1 and #5 as discussed in last month’s Flag article.

course come into play most often. The ultimate goal of this analysis will be to optimize resources to ensure the best golf experiences for the Members.

Looking back, we’ve had a great year. Despite a cold and wet start to the season, course conditions were excellent on all 45 holes. Mother Nature cooperated with a smoke-free summer which was a welcome relief from the past couple of years. Key projects on course included five bunker renovations on The Meadows, brush and tree removal on Forest #18, tree and brush removal behind #6 Slopes, pathway resurfacing on #8 Lakes and #8 Slopes, and sod replacement on the Practice Facility. Over the last few weeks the USGA Resource Management Tool was deployed. This data will be analyzed over the winter to help us determine which areas of the

I’d like to conclude by thanking my fellow Committee Members: Tracye Osler, Tim Hogan, Adam McBride, Peter Denhamer, Brian Ward, Rick Lancaster and Tom Christie for their time and input this past season. In addition, I’d like to recognize Brock Coates, Brian Thomas and Jon Abel from Turfcare plus Julie Repp, Judy Forshner and Ash Chadha.

MUSIC ON COURSE

We’re also very pleased to have the Turfcare Auxiliary Building approved by the Board, construction of which should commence by midOctober with an estimated completion date of Spring 2020. Over the next few months the property will be prepped for winter activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, shinny and the famous Curling Bonspiel.

the information to the membership as it becomes available. We would like to thank our Committee members for their countless hours of work on the various Club programs, and thank the membership for their active participation. We will be spending the winter months reviewing our tournament, league, and lesson programs and look forward to providing exciting offerings for the 2020 season. It is very sad to see things winding down with the shorter days and colder temperatures. Hopefully we will experience a few more warm days before we hang the clubs up for the winter or head south for warmer temperatures. On behalf of the Golf Operations team, we wish you all a healthy and happy winter.

Riley Waite’s hole-in-one was very timely as it took place during the Senior Men’s & Ladies Windup. It was great to see Riley celebrate with the other participants. It was quite a day for Riley as he also took home the Nielsen Jessiman trophy as the overall Men’s Low Net Champion. Congratulations also to Gord Meurin as the latest member of the Shoot Your Age Club. The Professional Team will be attending the PGA Buying Show this October. We will be purchasing for the Golf Shop for the 2020 season as well as attending education seminars. One of the sessions offered is the new World Handicap System that will be in place for the 2020 golf season. There are big changes coming and we will be passing on Riley Waite (holding Nielsen Jessiman trophy)

GOLF SHOP

A Steve Thomson, PGA PGA Associate Professional/ Golf Services Manager sthomson@glencoe.org

s the 2019 season approaches the finish line, I have reviewed a few Golf Shop numbers for the year.

»» Through September we have sold 19,193 golf balls, which equals roughly 1,600 dozen which if stacked would be 233 feet tall. This would be the same as 38.33 6 foot tall people standing on each other’s shoulders. We have requested that Brock and his Turfcare team start planting more trees and rough on the property to help increase golf ball sales. »» Our Point of Sale system has a “Top Moving Items” report. To no surprise our top moving item of the year was Titleist ProV1 and ProV1X at 5,982, or 498.5 dozen. You can have a beverage of your choice in the Spike Lounge on my tab if you can guess what item sits at number two on this report. »» During the 2019 season, the Golf Shop sold $220,900 in clubs. This is up $23,000 from 2018. Our club fitting tandem of Glenn Boswell and Daryl Patrick put in a ton of time and effort servicing the members with their club fitting needs and I want to thank them for their great season. »» We sold 67 sets of irons this year. Callaway was our number one brand with 26 sets. »» Our number one selling Men’s shoe was Footjoy with 50 pair.

»» Our number one selling Ladies shoe was Ecco with 19 pair. »» Our Shipper/Receiver, Maureen Thompson, received 826 orders this season. Since Daryl and I both must sign off on every invoice that totals a combined 1,652 autographs. That is 214 less autographs than Gord Newis signed after his team captured the 2019 Forest Cup. »» Our Golf Shop team signed out 1,568 demos clubs this season. At the average length of a 5 iron, these clubs laid end to end would be 4,575 feet in length. The Calgary Tower is 626 feet high. »» Our Golf Shop team signed in 5,741 guests through September. After timing one of our veterans we estimate that it takes 45 seconds to check in a guest. The math tells us that our team spent 4,305.75 minutes, or 71 hours checking in guests this year. A friendly reminder that the Golf Shop will have some big sales in October. This is a great time to spend some of your hard-earned Credit Book earnings. The Golf Shop will be closed in early November but will then be open throughout the entire offseason.

s Mother Nature shifts gears towards the inevitability of winter, so does your Turfcare team. This next six weeks is by far and away the most critical time when it comes to having the plant health we expect next spring. Proper application of nutrients, plant protection products and herbicides are important as the turf packs away food for the winter.

With shorter hours and the property not as busy, we can get very focused on whatever the task at hand is. Please do us a favour and get our attention when playing through or by the Maintenance team. We want to be as safe as possible when sharing the property.

You will see less staff managing day-to-day course grooming but with far less need to mow regularly we expect the conditions to remain consistent throughout the fall. The Turfcare team will also be focusing on some bunker projects and tree removal when time and course availability allows.

great fall weather so that we can squeeze as much

TURFCARE

@glencoegccturf

HIGH TECH EQUIPMENT

O Justin Smidt Second Assistant Superintendent

ctober is just around the corner and with the golf season winding down, our jobs in turfcare are ramping up for the big finale of putting the course to bed for the winter. Property wide topdressing, covering Poa annua greens and irrigation blowout all get completed simultaneously in those last two weeks of October, along with spraying our winter protection product application. This application is integral to the health of the turf through the winter and its playability for the next spring when the course re-opens. We are looking forward to this year’s application as this is our first fall season with our GPS sprayers. We began using the GPS technology this spring to apply our liquid fertilizers and plant protection products and we are excited to see how this can improve the efficiency of our fall application. Based on what we have seen throughout the summer, we expect the GPS technology to allow us to complete the entire application more quickly, much more accurately, and with a significant savings in product that we use. The majority of savings in time and product comes from the ability to use GPS to map all of our spray areas. For example, when we spray fairways, those areas are mapped out basically to the square inch. The sprayer knows exactly what to spray and the computerized individual nozzle control hits those areas without any significant overlap into other areas (rough, for example). This was more difficult before without computerized mapped areas and without individual nozzle control. The tablet screen on each sprayer shows in real time what has been sprayed and won’t allow you or the operator on the second sprayer to hit that area again, so there is no possibility of doubling up product on one spot.

PRIVACY POLICY

The tablet screen on the sprayer will be especially handy for the fall application. Since we spray tees, fairways, greens, and rough over a period of several days, the screen will be able to tell us exactly what was sprayed and not sprayed, no matter how many days ago it was or how long it takes us. We can now do this without the risk of human error. Before this year, we would spend a lot of time jumping on and off of the sprayer and paint lines on the grass to indicate where we stopped for the day, stopped to begin a new section, etc. and sometimes that was tough to follow a few days later. This eliminates that hassle and, again, will save us time and money. Another cool feature of the GPS sprayers is the auto steer. Using GPS coordinates, the operator manually gets lined up the desired pass to be sprayed, clicks a button with their foot, and just like that, the machine is doing all the work for you. It can drive itself in a perfectly straight line, with the exact desired overlap, and know exactly when to turn the booms on and off all at the same time. As soon as you are all done golfing for the season, we dive into our busiest, most important time of year in hopes that we can provide everyone just as good playing conditions in the spring that we had throughout the fall. Enjoy your last few weeks of golf!

The Glencoe Golf & Country Club respects your privacy. O Lisa Rosengarten Membership & Marketing Manager lrosengarten@glencoe.org 403-240-7395

ctober? How? Sad to see the season come to an end, as it FLEW BY! I hope everyone was able to enjoy their golf season to the fullest and I wish you a happy and healthy winter season ahead. Whether you are flying away to another home for the winter to continue to enjoy your second round of a golf season or staying put and enjoying all that comes with the snow — have the best off season and we will see you at the downtown Club or next spring! Last month we saw a couple exciting events take place for the membership to enjoy, the Drive in at the Driving Range and the Spruce View Wine Club – Mystery Tour.

A questionnaire went out to the Trial Members asking about their season and 100 percent of them said that their overall experience was what made the Trial so successful. I would like to thank the Members, Food & Beverage, Turfcare and everyone involved in making the membership experience the best possible for these Trial Members to see how lucky we are here and what a great Club life we have throughout the season. From all of the exciting and entertaining events, to the pristine course conditions, to the excellent food and service in the Spike Lounge and Family Dining to the kind and helpful Outdoor Services Team and Golf Shop staff who took the time to get to know these members. Thank you! Quote from one Trial Member; “if The Glencoe Golf & Country Club were to be given an award it would be The Best Club To Join As A New Member Award.”

Thank you to everyone involved in these two fun member events. We hope you enjoyed your time and look forward to continuing to have you come out to these. Feedback is always appreciated. Please don’t hesitate to let us know any additions you would like to see next season! New Member Please welcome, Bernie Bajnok, as a new member to The Glencoe Golf & Country Club. Bernie works as a Starter at the golf course and has been a dedicated member of staff for a number of years. Bernie is joined by his wife Jane and two sons, Jesse and Spencer Bajnok. Trial Membership During the season we welcomed 38 Trial Members to the Club. As their Trial comes to an end with the season, we have seen a handful of them start to commit as full members. We will continue to see them commit as we head into October.

New Member Entrance Fee Installment Plans Recently, we saw the Board approve a New Member Entrance Fee Installment Plan proposal for Seniors ages 70+ to be able to join the Golf Course on a 10 year plan at $5,000/year plus Senior Dues. This member will continue to be on Senior Dues until the entrance fee is paid in full, and will need to hold at least a Permanent Social membership downtown. We hope to see 70+ year olds find the excitement about becoming new members of the Golf Course and the downtown Club. As well, a New Member Associate Installment Plan (limited time offer) was approved. This plan allows Associates (25 – 36) to have a four year extension on their entrance fee payment plans. Where they were previously paying $50,000 until age 36, it is now 40 years of age. This will hopefully become more affordable to the younger demographic allowing them to enter the Club. The Associates will continue to pay Associate Dues until the Age 36. Benefits of the downtown Glencoe Club I would like to remind all of you the benefits of The Glencoe Club, as you have to become a member of the downtown Club in order to become a member at Golf Club. You all hold a certain membership downtown that you will be able to utilize off -season. The Glencoe Club is open year-round and very beneficial to golf members to have in the offseason.

FROM THE TEACHING CENTRE OUTDOOR SEASON WINDS DOWN & INDOOR SEASON BEGINS

T Ryan Anderson, PGA, B.Mgmt. Head Teaching Professional 2016 & 2017 PGA of Alberta Teacher of the Year 2016-2018 US Kids Top 50 Instructor randerson@glencoe.org

he golf season moves pretty fast, if you blink you might miss it. Yes, I can hardly believe that we are at the end of the season. It definitely was a memorable one that started in April with the world watching Tiger Woods resurrection at the Masters winning his 15 major tournaments. Then the rains of April seemed to linger for the whole season and if you wanted to play, you better not look at the forecast and just go because if you tried to wait for the prefect day you might be reading this without very many games under your belt this season. For some, this is it. The season is over, it’s time to put the clubs away for the winter, only to return to them in the spring. For others, a new season is upon us, it’s the indoor season for golf. A time to continue the quest for a better game and to prepare for the future. For a Calgarian that is dedicated to the game this is reality. Indoor golf is essential to keep golf flowing through our veins. Here are some ways to keep golf going during the winter. Practice indoors Yes, indoor practice doesn’t sound very appealing, but if you do it right, it will make a big difference in your game next season. The downtown Club has simulators that make it a little more real. You can play over 30 of the worlds best golf courses in the comfort of warm indoors. Fall and winter golf leagues run in the winter that will help keep your golf game in shape while having some fun along the way. In addition, the downtown Club has hitting nets for practice and a dedicated teaching studio. Use the nets for a few minutes before or after another activity at the Club and you’ll sneak in lots of extra practice to maintain and improve your game. In front of the mats and in the hallway, we have practice mats that are great for hitting a few putts to retain some feel on the greens. We have special teaching mats that show the optimal length and path of the stroke while you putt.

Join our Winter Golf Video Lesson Program and you get unlimited lessons from January 2 to March 7 to refine your skills for the next season. The indoor facility uses the TrackMan radar to measure shots and provide information about the clubface, path, speed and other parameters that will help you understand and improve your game. Also, we have a brand-new training tool called Boditrak. It’s a mat that you hit shots from and it measures the pressure and weight distribution on your feet while you swing. This information is very valuable to understand how to gain more power in the swing. Visit the the Fitness Centre The Fitness Centre at the downtown Club is a great spot to work on your conditioning for the next season. Flexibility, balance and strength are important to develop and maintain your golf game. I’ve noticed in my teaching that flexibility is often the source of swing issues. If you don’t have the flexibility to get the club in a desirable position, then you’ll start swinging the club in an altered way that you try to overcome the deficiency. Seek out the help of a personal trainer to build a program this off season to improve your flexibility over the winter months. Finally, fly south or far away Blending your indoor practice with a golf trip is a great way to stay motivated during the winter months. If you are like me, working towards a goal helps maintain the discipline to practice and train to improve the golf game. There are so many great golf destinations. If you are looking for somewhere to go talk with any of our PGA of Canada Professionals and we can help lead you to a great golf getaway. Thank you all for a great season and look forward to making 2020 even better.
