2016 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon + Shiraz ‘Bin 389’ | South Australia 125 Often dubbed the ‘mini-Grange’ as this will usually see the used barrels from the Grange cellar. Full aromatics of cedar and menthol with an underlying nose of ripe fig. Nice acidity and very well balanced. 2009 Penfolds Shiraz ‘St Henri’ | South Australia 150 First released in 1953 at a time when Grange was still a secret to the world (and even the board of directors at Penfolds!) St Henri has always been a wine of class and style. It is unique that it does not use any new barrels in its maturity, thus delivering a very pure expression of Shiraz. At a decade old this is just starting to show itself. Penfolds is the great historic wine name from Australia. Founded in Adelaide in 1844 by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary. Under the careful watch and large-scale plans of Mary Penfold the company took on the dominant role in the Australian wine market and by 1844 they controlled roughly 1/3 of the entire wine market and was exporting to London. Since the original Penfold’s duo the company has never waivered in its drive for excellence in wine quality and distribution, and as such today remain a qualitative staple in the global market.
