SUMMER 2020 SPECIAL EDITION

THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

T

o say this has been an unusual year for golf and our Club would be an understatement. By midMarch, sporting events around the world were cancelled, and as we moved through April and May we saw cancellation of The Glencoe DC Bank Invitational and soon after learned that the Canadian Amateur we were hosting in August would also be cancelled. These were both disappointments for our members, but understandable and necessary in the circumstances. Our courses were closed as a result of COVID19 before they even opened, but then permitted to open on May 4. Our Turfcare team, which was given three days notice from Alberta Health, did an extraordinary job with a skeleton crew to get the season underway. We started with 9-holes on the Bridges, followed by 18 more on The Forest two days later, and then the Lakes/Slopes as soon as conditions permitted. I want to thank Brock and his crew for their great work getting us golfing as quickly as they did, and working long hours to create the exceptional conditions we are now enjoying.

This of course did not come without its challenges. The many small and big things that all our staff have done to keep us safe are appreciated. Change can sometimes be difficult, but our members have been understanding of the gradual approach we have taken to open the courses and slowing return to something approaching normal. But we need to continue to be cautious as we make more changes, to protect our members and staff alike. One of the biggest challenges has been the huge demand for tee times. You will have seen statistics from Ash and Judy that show that this year we have had some of the busiest golf days in our Club’s history. That’s a good thing – it’s wonderful to see so many families and friends golfing together, but it also has made it more difficult for all of us to get the tee times we want on the course we want. Ash, Judy and the golf team have worked tirelessly, so as not to overreact to short term pressures nor move too slowly in making changes to make access more equitable for everyone. I think they have done an excellent job of managing a difficult problem, and we now have a system that is responding well to the current demand for all members. But of course as long as more people are off work, or students are without summer jobs, or some of our other activities and travel are not available, there will be high demand for golf and pressure on tee times. I want to thank our members for their understanding and our staff for doing everything they can to meet the challenges.

THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

I

hope you and yours are doing well and have endured these past few months as best as possible by spending a great deal of personal time with your loved ones in a safe environment. The last four months have surely been a challenge for all of us. It has involved everything from feeling anxious and uncertain about our own health, to having a golf season at all, to trying to get organized and ready to open on a short notice. With all the new policies and procedures due to COVID-19 and the adjustments we have all had to make in our lives, it has been a little scary and a little stressful at times. It’s been close to two months now since the start of the golf season and it has been crazy busy and hectic. Nothing has been normal this season and I do not think it will get normal anytime soon. One of the good pieces of news is that golf as a game is seeing a resurgence. Members and their families have really reconnected with the game and we are seeing new players being introduced and players reinvigorated who in past may have been involved in another sport. I am optimistic in the long run that this uptake in golf due to COVID will show dividends with higher retention rates!

Ash Chadha achadha@glencoe.org 403-240-7385

What has made our start to this season manageable has been the wonderful people I have the pleasure to work with daily. They have welcomed the challenge and made it all feel seamless. For the first six weeks of the season we operated with ALL returning staff. There were no new hires, which is a testament to our culture at Glencoe. I sincerely appreciate how committed and patient our Management Team has been as we have tried to find a way of dealing with life at work and at home. Most important to me, has been the steadfast hope exhibited by so many that life and the Club will be okay, but more than that, that we will thrive. Staff cannot do it all alone. We need, and we have received, full support from our Board of Directors and Golf Committees. They have been fully engaged and have supported not only Management but also our front-line staff in these very difficult times. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the time and effort the Club Executive has put in since this pandemic started. They have guided both Clubs through these unique times with no playbook to go by! Their leadership has made a difference… Change is difficult for most, but our members and staff have been understanding of the approach we have taken to open during COVID. I want to thank our members and staff for being so responsive. Tough times like these really show the character of your team and the people you work with, for, and depend on. I am proud to say, I am very fortunate to have the people in my life — home and office — who not only support one another but also care for one another! I sincerely hope the worst is behind us and we can all have a great, safe summer with family and friends. Stay safe everyone and see you at the Club… Regards,

LIGHTNING POLICY

In the event of a lightning strike within an eight-kilometer radius, a police siren will sound. It is recommended shelter be taken. All play will be suspended for all Club leagues and tournaments when a lightning delay is in effect. An intermittent horn will sound when it is safe to resume play.

THE GLENCOE CLUB AND THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S MESSAGE

W

hat a unique beginning to the 2020 golf season! With the global COVID epidemic we find ourselves in, golf has provided a solace for members like never before. With the opportunity to connect with family and friends (in a physically distanced way) and to enjoy this wonderful game, it has resulted in record numbers of golf rounds. When I think back to the last 2 – 3 months, two major thoughts come to mind. Pride and Gratitude.

PRIDE Members have commented on the well thought out, and measured approach to the golf season. The membership have also mentioned their pleasure with the service in all areas as well as the conditions of all courses. I, like the membership, am proud of what your staff team have been able to do to have the course, food & beverage areas, and the service of all areas to the high levels members expect, while always focusing on safety. Your team have been driven to provide exceptional experiences, even if it is behind masks and at a distance, and for that I am so proud.

Jan Bloemraad, CCM jbloemraad@glencoe.org

GRATITUDE The staff and Board are grateful to the membership. For your understanding at the beginning of the season, for your patience as we managed through the tee time load, and your dedication to your Club. Speaking of the Board, I personally am grateful to the entire Board on assisting and guiding the management team through this difficult start to the year. As we head into July, I wish all the membership a safe, healthy and happy summer. Your staff team will continue to strive to exceed all your expectations this year, and if there is anything I can personally do to ensure this occurs, please do not hesitate to contact me.

GOLF RULE

Members’ guests are allowed to warm-up on the Practice Facility only if they are registered to play golf the same day. If you encounter slow play on the golf course you are encouraged to call the Golf Shop at 403-571-0055.

GOLF COMMITTEE

W

#golfcommittee

elcome to the 2020 golf season, this year has been different than any other year. I don’t need to let anybody know how quickly the world can change. This is reflected in how quickly a world can change a golf course.

Since opening the course on May 4 under strict Alberta Health Services (AHS) imposed guidelines there has been constant pressure on the course, management, staff and the tee sheet. Some of the conditions imposed by AHS (noticed and unnoticed) include tee times every 15 minutes, check station entering the property, restricted dining capacity, staff masking, changes in cleaning protocol, reduced staffing levels to allow physical distancing, no water stations, no cart service, no complimentary tees and ball washers, booking of practice times, pins not to removed — just to name a few. And many other changes all in the effort to reduce touch points and allow for members to get out and golf. These were the “new” reality on May 4. Today, the end of June, we have seen tee times now at 10 minutes (usual has been 9 minutes), innovative ways of scoring (apps), online printing of scorecards, baggies of tees, eased access to the Practice Facility, and the bringing on of more staff. Thank you to the staff and management that quickly, under unprecedented times, put together an innovative plan and implemented it to get members out golfing. The number of members from all categories wanting to access the course is unprecedented. We have a membership that changed overnight, with more ability to play during the day. This combined with AHS imposed modifications created a perfect storm. The management team worked incessantly to address the issues, and for this we are grateful. Did we get everything right the first time, the second time – no; but without their actions and innovative thinking we would have been in a less desirable position. Something had to be done, decisions had to be made and actions had to be executed. It is known that when a change occurs there is a ripple effect and only by action and not standing still can the results and data be examined and improved. This is what your team did and thank you for your efforts.

In the world of COVID the one thing that we can be certain is what we know today is going to change. From member input, staff, and the many volunteer committees and boards, everybody is working to address the ever changing landscape to ensure all members’ expectations are addressed and memorable experiences are enjoyed by all. In conclusion, I would like to thank the membership for their patience as the Club adjusts to the changing situation. I would like to acknowledge Ash and Judy, and their team for all the effort they have done to adjust policies and procedures to get us out playing golf. Without Brock and his team there would be no golf course, thank you for your tireless hours of work on preparing and maintaining the course. The masked team in Food & Beverage led by Jennifer and Courtney whose efforts given have provided a safe sanctuary to refuel after a round of golf. There are many other staff on and off the course that have stepped into “new” roles to keep the club operating under the new parameters, I thank you. Finally, thank you to all the chairs and Committees that volunteer their time to bring the experience of Glencoe to each member.

Be safe, be respectful, we are all in this together.

In the last few days I have had the opportunity to have a conversation with various committee chairs and gain their insight to events and activities around the Club:

INVITATIONAL COMMITTEE

@GlencoeInv #GlencoeInv

Dale has passion not only for this event but the golf course overall. It was with great disappointment that COVID put an end to the 2020 Glencoe DC Bank Invitational. This year was going to see the addition of a female event, both an amateur side and a professional event. With a total of three categories of golf happening simultaneously this would have been a first and a spectacular event. Dale remains excited and is carrying the momentum that was created into the 2021 event.

JUNIOR COMMITTEE While the start to the 2020 golf season has been unusual, it has been very welcoming to the Juniors. I am very grateful to the Glencoe staff who have cooperated to get the Club open and running! The golf course has provided a way for many Juniors to get outside, see friends and participate in a sport when so many other activities have been cancelled. Junior lessons are in full swing and the Committee is working with the Professional Staff to reschedule

as many junior events as possible. Information about rescheduled Junior Club Championships and other events will be out soon. Please watch your emails and the Club website; you are also welcome to reach out to myself and Glen Boswell with any questions. Junior Match Play has already begun. Due to the late start the numbers were limited. Good luck to all the participants!

GROUNDS COMMITTEE The course is in great condition due to the efforts of our superintendent Brock and his team. They have been working under reduced staffing level, caused by AHS to achieve physical distancing rules. Given one of the wettest and coolest springs in many years they have gotten the course into great conditions. Work on Slopes #5 is under way and almost complete; the tree removal will improve the health of this green. The bunkers on this hole will be clay, which will allow a quicker return to playability. MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD PROFESSIONAL

W

hat a start to 2020! We hope our entire membership has been able to stay safe and healthy.

We are very grateful to the membership for their understanding and cooperation with the new, additional, and continuously changing procedures put in place here at The Glencoe G&CC.

WOW! REPEAT HOLE-IN-ONES Special congratulations to Sheelagh Mercer. On May 25 Sheelagh commented on the possibility of a hole -in-one as she teed up her ball on Slopes #5. She proceeded to have her first hole-in-one. Fast forward to June 4. Sheelagh is again playing Slopes #5 and indicated to her group that the key to the hole is to start the ball out to the right as it runs to the left after landing. First to hit, Sheelagh followed these instructions to a tee and proceeded to have her second hole-in-one. Congratulations again Sheelagh!

WORLD HANDICAP SYSTEM With the introduction of the World Handicap System a few of the key changes include: Establishing a handicap index For a player that has not yet established a handicap index: • The maximum score for each hole played is limited to par plus 5 strokes. • A player needs a total of 54 holes , made up of any combination of 9 and 18-hole scores, to establish a handicap. • The maximum Handicap Index for all golfers is now 54.0. Maximum hole score for handicap purposes For players with an established handicap index: • The maximum score for each hole played is net double bogey and calculated as follows: • Par of the hole + 2 strokes + Any handicap stroke(s) the player receives on that hole

If a player has a handicap of 8 they would receive a stroke on stroke holes 1 to 8. All holes other than those they receive strokes on their maximum would be double bogey. On the holes they receive strokes on their maximum would be par +2+one stroke. For example on a par 4 where they receive a stroke the maximum would be 4+2+1=7. If a player has a handicap of 21 they would receive a stroke on every hole and an additional stroke on stroke holes 1 to 3. On the holes they receive one stroke their maximum would be par +2+one stroke. For example on a par 3 where they receive a stroke the maximum would be 3+2+1=6. On the holes they receive two strokes their maximum would be par +2+two strokes. On the holes they receive two strokes their maximum would be par +2+two stroke. For example on a par 5 where they receive two strokes their maximum would be 5+2+2=9.

Judy Forshner, PGA, BEd Head Professional jforshner@glencoe.org

Best wishes to all for fabulous golf this season. May the wind always be at your back!

When playing 18 holes on The Meadows the stroke holes are allocated using the odd numbers on the front nine and the even numbers on the back nine. Accounting for abnormal course or weather conditions When abnormal course or weather conditions cause scores to be unusually high or low on a given day a “Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC)” adjusts score differentials to better reflect a player’s actual performance. This only applies if the player’s scores are put in same day as Handicap Indexes will now be updated daily. Number of holes played to record a score To post a 9-hole score a player must play 7 to 12 holes under the Rules of Golf. To post an 18-hole score a player must play 14 or more holes under the Rules of Golf.

For example: If a player is a 0 handicap they would not receive any strokes and therefore double bogey would be their maximum on every hole.

GOLF SHOP

I

have a feeling that the 2020 golf season will be one we will be talking about for years to come. From planting over 300 signs on the property, to having to stay in the parking lot until 10 minutes before your tee time, to days with over 600 member rounds of golf played, this will be a season to remember. I wanted to pass along my sincere thank you and appreciation to everyone on our team for their extra time and efforts during the hectic start to this season. Most of our Starter/Marshall team are folks that like to work two or three shifts per week. During the first few weeks of our Club opening these amazing gentlemen were all working six full shifts per week. Part of this need was created with the added attendants on the road coming into the Club, and at the Practice Facility. To properly and safely sanitize all our push and powercarts our Outdoor Services team needed to

TURFCARE

wear a full Tyvek suit, goggles, mask and gloves. Working for any length of time in the full suit was a big challenge as the suit became an oven in a matter of minutes. With the COVID restrictions we reorganized our Demo Club program. To try out Demo Clubs you need to book an appointment with one of our Professionals at the Practice Facility. Our team has a schedule of times for Demo Clubs and Club Fittings seven days per week. Year to date they have completed over 40 club fittings.

Steve Thomson, PGA PGA Associate Professional/ Golf Services Manager sthomson@glencoe.org

I greatly appreciate the extra time and efforts from all our team members in what has been a very challenging time at our Club.

Please watch for our upcoming sales on apparel, shoes, and bags.

@glencoegccturf

H

aving the confidence that the Turfcare team can work in safe environment is a priority at the Club. All personal protective equipment is provided, extensive property orientation and detailed equipment and task training are paramount in having safety as a part of our culture. Two new processes that have been initiated this season also significantly contribute to this priority.

MAINTENANCE GAPS Alternating daily, Monday through Thursday, Turfcare takes to the course from 10 – 11 am after completing their 6 – 9:30 am shift prior to the first tee time of the day. Working in this one-hour block allows the Turfcare team to work efficiently and at a safe distance from unintended wayward golf balls. Many maintenance practices and mowing details are much more effective after the dew has disappeared. We can now allocate workhours to much needed detailing during the second wave through the property.

Brock Coates, AGS Head Superintendent bcoates@glencoe.org

FIRST GROUPS For the groups lucky enough to play immediately after morning maintenance or the above mentioned gaps, we have created a program that allows for speedy rounds while giving our team the time and room needed to groom the property for all member and guest play each day. Please adhere to the directive below to ensure that we keep workers safe and allow them to successfully complete all their tasks. Please respect maintenance and fellow golfers BY NOT HITTING UNTIL TURFCARE HAVE VACATED THE HOLE, this will ensure that all scheduled maintenance can be done for all players that day. First groups will play their round of golf in an AVERAGE of 3 hours and 30 minutes. Some days slightly less and some days slightly more by adhering to the above club directive.

FROM THE TEACHING CENTRE

W

e have all been faced with challenges due to COVID-19 and the game of golf brings so many people of all different ages and backgrounds together to partake in a recreational activity in a safe manner. It has been exciting to see the club busy and everyone at the club enjoying their golf this season. Over the past few months, I’ve heard lots of stories of best shots, most rounds, best rounds and golfers genuinely excited about their improvement in swing, game and scores. One of the best parts of being a Teaching Professional is that we get to share in the success of our student’s achievements and their enjoyment of the game. There is nothing better than being told you are valued for helping someone else succeed. We are all happy to be helping golfers improve and enjoy the game more, especially in these times. One question that has been coming up recently during lessons is how I can I hit my hybrid better? The hybrid was created to be this miracle club that helps hit longest shots the far and high. Here are some tips on getting the best shot out of it. 1. Play it more in the middle of the stance. Often players play their hybrids too far forward making hard to make a descending blow to the ball. 2. Narrow your stance for hybrid shots. This makes it easier to hit down on the ball resulting in better contact. 3. Lean the shaft forward at address to help compress the ball. The leading edge of the face of the club needs to be flush with the ground at impact. Pressing the shaft forward will help get the club to this position at impact. 4. Swing smooth and easy. The harder we try the harder it gets. Relax and keep the tension out of the shoulders and arms to help let the club swing. Think about swinging smoothly right through to the finish.
