Paradise “ Paradise is exactly like where you are right now... only much, much better. “ -Laurie Anderson

Abstract Since the start of time, humans and animals have co-inhabited the earth and lived seperate lives. However, the ways of humans have expedited climate change , altering and implicating the lives of animals. In light of the theme of supernatural climate change , unpredictable and unexplainable phenomenas happen resulting in changing landscapes as well as impacting earth’s inhabitants. Humans and animals confined in the space will have to learn how to adapt and live their lives together in harmony . The banner explores the concept of ‘metamorphosis’ on humans as a change occuring internally, perhaps can alter their external behaviours and thoughts. From it, would come forth a world of union and growth.

Motif development
( references / using image manipulation ) Combination of wildlife pictures and line work sketches inspired from artist reference I imagined metamorphosis to be a big physical change and sought to combine human + animals through giving them physical human attributes such as hands, internal bones , faces. Through image manipulation, better image visualising and placement can be achieved and other elements can be further added through sketching. The animals chosen were based across asia with the exception of the penguin and are either on the endangered list or have a high chance to be.
Motif development ( draft 1 )
1/4 sample of banner layout with existing motifs Sketchy lines and unusal colors creating absurdity
Motif development ( draft 2 ) Seprating the fusion to make animals and humans stand out more Process of sketching out in pencil, bringing it to illustrator to image trace and vectorising it (mainly for easier scaling )
Snow leopard
Orang Utan
White tiger
Vulture
Red Panda
Humboldt penguin
Chinese flowers

Motif development ( Final design + Color scheme )
Human Motifs
Animal Motifs
Nature motifs
First Draf t Layout was messy and did not really tell the story yet. Colors were also not standing out enough and the overlapping of animals and humans was not working. Images had not much size variation too
( layout )
Banner development
Third Draft Increased the size of the motifs and removed some to create more space. This time, animals and humans were more spread out and more interactive with the envionment
Second Draf t Background added with a clearer color scheme. I was trying to fit all the variations of the different motifs i had and sprawled them out randomly to see if they would fit but it wasn’t working and looked too random
Golden st rips / waves can be looked as cascading downwards or coming from the bottom up
Flowers are placed everwhere as if they have fell off the trees in celebration of the union of animals and humans in the same environment

become stepping stones for animals or humans to land / sit on as well as the golden strips that support the animals
Humans placed at the bottom with this gesture as a sign of a grand entrance
Increased overall saturation and contrast to make it more vibrant and added overlay effect so that motifs fit better into the background
Media Wall + explanation
About Animal motifs In this new environment, they thrive and are not afraid of living with humans. They are able to roam about freely and have gain a rational mind to reason and make choices.
About Human motifs They are all female characters and are all doing very flexibile gymnastic postures. This was inspired by chinese dance moves where the dance focuses on being beautiful and elegant. They also have many lines of their internal structure being revealed. This is to denote
some sort of internal change happening inside from being in this new environment. They are also placed everywhere to show movement as well as visual flow
About Color Scheme Mostly warm colors with reds, oranges, yellows and browns to show how warm the environment is as well as to bring about warmth and comfort. Even with the most intense color red, the animal does not look hostile but fits into the whole scene and theme. Creating an overlay effect with the motifs also shows the fusion between living things and environment hence some motifs look more hidden than others.
About Nature motifs Trees are inspired by japanese zen gardens and therefore the enlargement of bonsai trees that grow oddly in shape making them look sturdy and majestic. In building the environment, bonsai trees symbolise harmony, peace, an order of thoughts, balance and all that is good in nature. The flowers are magnolia flower which are
known for their endurance as they as able to adapt to different climates and have lived for millions of years therefore symbolising eternity and long life as well. They also symbolise purity and dignity. The golden waves / strips contribute to the movement of the whole scene and gives an ethereal look. It symbolises the new air that animals and humans
