said Thursday. Sindac said the Russian police was alarmed over the results of recent police operations in the Philippines that involved the rescue of Russian women who were apparent victims of trafficking and exploitation, who ended up working in karaoke and adult entertainment bars in red lights districts. “In the meeting, Kolokoltsev expressed desire to cooperate more extensively with the Aseanapol members and dialogue partners, he delivered willingness to explore every possible area of cooperation and partnership particularly on criminal activities against transnational crimes,” Sindac said. He said as a response to Kolokolstev’s proposal, the PNP leadership immediately worked on a Memorandum of Understanding that will provide the framework for the cooperation between the Philippines and Russia in the prevention of the said issues and concerns “under the basis of reciprocity, mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs.” In exchange, Russia will provide peacekeeping training to the Philippines for the threat of terrorism and human trafficking. 5 PH universities make Asia’s best list
MANILA, Philippines - Five universities in the Philippines made it to the Top 300 Asian universities list of the London-based education and career network Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The state-run University of the Philippines-Diliman remains the country’s top school after it was ranked 63rd in the 2014 QS University Rankings in Asia. UP’s latest ranking was higher than last year’s 67th spot. Its best performance was in 2011 when it was ranked 62nd among Asian universities. It was followed by Ateneo de Manila University at 115th
place from last year’s 109th and the University of Santo Tomas, which ranked 141st from last year’s 148th. De La Salle University remains in the 151-160 grouping. Ateneo de Davao University was included in the 251-300 bracket for the first time. The University of Southern Philippines, which was included in the 251-300 bracket last year, did not make it to the 2014 list. “This is a much more encouraging set of results for Filipino institutions, following on from two years in which many of them have seen their ranking drop,” QS head of

Napoles applies to become state witness MANILA (May 15) — Janet Lim Napoles, the suspected brains in the embezzlement of billions of congressional funds, has applied to become state witness in the government’s plunder cases. The Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed in a television report Tuesday that Napoles asked to be endorsed state witness to the Office of the Ombudsman in the cases linked to the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) and Malampaya fund scams, among others. “Please be informed that our client is willing to help the government by offering to testify ... against those involved in the commission of the PDAF, Malampaya, DOTC and other scams,” Napoles’ lawyers said in a letter to Secretary Leila de Lima. The lawyers also asked that Napoles’ stay in Ospital ng Makati be extended before she is returned to her detention cell in Fort Sto. Domingo in Laguna. After initial assessment, the DOJ may also grant the detained businesswoman status as “provisional” state witness and place her under the Witness Protection Program, along with her former employees now whistleblowers led by Benhur Luy. Once approved by the Ombudsman as state witness, Napoles will be granted immunity from plunder charges filed by the National Bureau of Inves-
tigation. The request came following Napoles’ submission of her sworn statement to De Lima. She also listed down names of her alleged conspirators in the “pork barrel” scam including incumbent lawmakers and Cabinet officials. The Senate Blue Ribbon Committee on Monday issued a subpoena for a copy of Napoles’ list and affidavit. Malacañang said on Wednesday the signed initial affidavit contains names of only three senators, but Napoles’ camp said there are more names tagged by the alleged scam brains. De Lima said, however, that the DOJ is still waiting for the complete affidavit from Napoles, expected to extend the list of names. Napoles is currently detained for charges of serious illegal detention and kidnapping filed by Luy. Philstar

Sandiganbayan issues freeze order on Corona assets MANILA (May 15) -- The Sandiganbayan Second Division has issued a freeze order on the assets of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona and his wife, Cristina. The freeze order covers P130,587,012.75 worth of the couple’s assets. The issuance of the freeze order is in connection with the forfeiture case filed against the former chief justice and his
wife Cristina, who is also the former president and chairperson of John Hay Development Corporation (JHDC), last March 27 by the Office of the Ombudsman. The Coronas are accused of abusing their public positions to amass ill-gotten wealth. The Office of the Ombudsman charged Corona with eight counts of perjury and violation of the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public
Officials and Employees for allegedly misdeclaring his wealth. “Considering that adequate bases exist which satisfy the requirements set forth under Rule 57 of the 1997 Rules of Civil Procedure, the Court hereby resolves to grant the prayer in said Petition of the issuance of a Write of Preliminary Attachment,” the anti-graft court said. Ombudsman Conchita Car-
pio Morales said graft investigators traced peso and dollar deposits of the couple held in different banks as well as real estate properties in Quezon City and Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. The Ombudsman said the combined declared assets of the Corona couple was only P30.37 million while their estimated total net worth was P160.96 million. (abscbnnews)

Ministry of Internal Affairs’ latest equipment from the world’s leading producer of police gear and equipment in October, Sindac said. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation is participating as observer delegation in the ongoing 34th Asean (Association of the Southeast Asian Nations) Association of Police Chiefs (Aseanapol) conference in Sofitel Plaza Manila, where the bilateral talk was held. Meanwhile, the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) proposed a joint agreement with the PNP to combat issues on terrorism particularly in the Southeast Asia and cross-border crimes. Sindac said RMP Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Dig Dato’ Sri Khalid Bin Abu Bakar initiated an anti-terrorism partnership between the Philippines and Malaysia. Bakar said the agreement will facilitate the exchange of intelligence information and the establishment of a system of communication that would help both countries prevents terrorism and which will deliver a quick response when they happen.
Police General Suhardi Alius, Commissioner General of the Indonesian National Police (INP), suggested the joint exercise program for the PNP and RMP similar to the existing Philippines-Indonesia (Philindo) Joint Police Maritime Law Enforcement Exercise (Marlex), which aims to address transnational threats such as illicit drug trafficking, terrorism, arms smuggling, human trafficking, illegal fishing, maritime fraud and other crimes at high seas, which requires enhanced security cooperation, coordination and coordinated maritime law enforcement response between the law enforcement agencies of the two countries in Sulu and Sulawesi Sea. Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines share a vast tri-border corridor in the SuluSulawesi Sea, a vital sea lane for trade and commerce in the Asia-Pacific region. A memorandum of agreement was signed by representatives of the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia in May 2002 to strengthen cooperation, recognizing the value of enhancing bilateral defense, and establishing a framework to facilitate cooperation and interoperability. sunnex

Sowter noted the Philippine universities scored relatively weak on the internationalization indicators, which measure the proportion of international students and staff, and participation in exchange programs. Despite making the top 50 for both academic and employer reputation, UP failed to make it to the top 200 in all four internationalization indicators, Sowter said. The National University of Singapore topped the ranking for the first time. In second place is the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, followed by the University of Hong Kong, Seoul National University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The Chinese University of Hong Kong landed in sixth place, followed by Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, China’s Peking University, South Korea’s Pohang University of Science and Technology and the University of Tokyo. UP has overtaken University of Indonesia (71) in the ranking. Also in the list are Malaysia’s Universiti Malaya (32), Thailand’s Mahindol University (40), Chulalongkorn University of (48), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (56), and Universiti Sains Malaysia (57). The Top 300 universities were ranked by QS based on academic and employer reputation, faculty and student population and international students and faculty, among others. MANILA, Philippines - The traditional Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo rites have merely become a “cultural presentation” and a fashion show, according to a Catholic bishop. Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa Palawan Bishop Pedro Arigo said Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo have been slowly losing its religious relevance. “Ang ating mga Santacruzan ay naging cultural na, naging cultural at fashion show these
previous years.

DepEd approves tuition hike for 244 private schools MANILA (May 15) - At least 244 private elementary and high schools, including in Metro Manila and in Yolanda-devastated areas in Eastern Visayas, were allowed to increase their tuition rates for the coming school year, the Department of Education (DepEd) reported yesterday. DepEd approved the petitions for tuition hike of 172 schools in the metropolis, 23 in Region 12, 21 in Region 4B, 12 in Region 2, 11 in Region 8, three in Region 9, and two in Region 13. Tuition rates in Metro Manila will increase by eight percent, in Region 2 by 9.55 percent and 5.80 percent in Region 4B, DepEd said, adding it is still waiting for reports from other regions. Data showed a total of 285 schools from the National Capital Region, and Regions 2, 4B, 8, 9, 12, and 13 have filed petitions for tuition hike. In Eastern Visayas, at least 19 schools applied for tuition increase but only 11 were approved. DepEd said there are 933 secondary schools
and 2,118 kindergarten and elementary schools in Metro Manila. DepEd assistant secretary Tonisito Umali said the additional fees would be used to raise teachers’ salaries and improve school facilities. Umali said they expect fewer private elementary and high schools to raise tuition this school year than last year. “The number of approved requests did not exceed 10 percent of the total number of schools. Only one in 10 private schools has increased tuition,” he said. Umali said some school officials are worried that any increase in fees may cause an exodus of their students to other institutions with lower tuition rate. Earlier, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) said a total of 353 private universities and colleges have filed petitions for an increase in tuition and other fees this coming school year. Metro Manila has the most number of private high schools seeking tuition hike with 74. Philstar

Aquino: Wrong to instantly fire Cabinet execs on ‘pork’ list MANILA — President Benigno Aquino III will not yet dismiss members of his Cabinet who were named on Janet Lim-Napoles’ supposed lists of officials involved in the pork barrel scam. In an interview with media, Aquino said it is not right to fire officials who are merely accused of wrongdoing but have not yet been proven guilty. “Mali siguro na may nagcriticize, ‘di ba, dapat tanggalin na kaagad. Siguro ang importante: May ebidensya nga ba?,” Aquino said. Aquino made this statement after Budget Sec. Florencio
Abad, Agriculture Sec. Proceso Alcala and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) director Joel Villanueva were included in the different Napoles’ lists that had surfaced. He said firing alleged erring officials without any sufficient proof is not how the law works. “Dito sa bansa natin karapatan ng bawat isa ang pinangangalagaan at isa sa mga tenets ng ating batas ‘innocent until proven guilty’. Hindi ‘guilty until you prove yourself innocent’,” the President said. Abad, a former Batanes congressman, has repeatedly denied that he had transactions

with Napoles, the suspected pork barrel scam mastermind. He has also dismissed claims that he taught the businesswoman how to set up foundations. Alcala has also denied the allegations against him. As for Villanueva, a former party-list representative, the President said the official has already shown him the alleged document implicating him in the pork barrel scam. “’Yung partylist na nakalagay doon sa letterhead, doon sa alleged document from him, ay ibang partylist,” Aquino said. The President admitted earlier this week that he has seen two Napoles’ lists, but their contents do not match. He revealed on Thursday that one of the list included 14 senators while the other — supposedly from Napoles herself — implicated 11. Aquino also mentioned the other list obtained by rehab czar Panfilo Lacson and another one reported by a broadsheet based on the digital records of whistleblower Benhur Luy. The President said the government cannot just file cases against the accused officials without any strong evidence. “So palagay ko obligasyon ko sa sambayanan manigurado (na) ‘pag naghain tayo ng kaso matibay ang ebidensya para talagang maparusahan ‘yung nagkasala,” he said.

“Ngayon, ang kabaligtaran naman ‘non, kung maghain ka lang ng haka-haka... parang walang basehan na akusasyon... madi-dismiss ‘yung kaso,” he added.

Aubrey Miles
How Ai-Ai had ‘it’ restored; The Troy-Aubrey ‘formula’ M
ANILA (May 15) - two presscons the other day were probably the most “howl-arious” the movie writers have ever at tended. Noted (notorious?) for being licentious, unabashedly and unapologetically asking the stars unnerving questions that delve into, would you believe, body par ts (such as, ehem, size and the like). The first presscon was for a “for men only” product, Euphoria Ma x x, a new brand of libido enhancer being endorsed by Troy Montero and Aubrey Miles, his par tner for 11 years with whom he has a five-year-old son, Hunter. (Aubrey has a 13-year-old son, Maurie, from a past relationship.) The photo shoot for the product was calculated to be “erotic” as a nod to Euphoria Ma x x’s claimed enhancing proper ties (including boosting a man’s stamina), depicting Troy and Aubrey as a couple who has been in tip-top shape all these years. According to the manufacturer/distributor (BFPC), Euphoria Ma x x works only for men (Aubrey was included as endorser presumably to prove that it works on Troy), especially those who are suf fering from sexual dysfunction and those who want to be at their per formance level where and when it’s needed. However, it shouldn’t be compared to Viagra which is prescribed for men with erectile dysfunction. As you must have noticed at this point, today’s story is a bit “sanitized” to avoid of fending the sensibility of some readers. Yours truly is treating the subject as clinically as possible, especially the following “for women only” story. Back to Troy and Aubrey who have been keeping a low profile, wi th Troy devoting his

time mostly to a film-processing company where he works. Their life together has been spared from the unsavory rumors that hound other showbiz couples and they are hardly ever talked about. No news is good news, right? “Communication is impor tant between us,” said Aubrey who has maintained her sex y figure (which was showcased in an FHM cover story a few years ago). “We are not the type of couple na away kaagad. We talk things out peacefully.” “We’re fair in raising the kids,” added Troy who, at 40, still looks dashing (he’s a deadringer for Hollywood actor Brendan Fraser, isn’t he?). “We remind them to respect the elders and other people as well. “ The “formula” works pret t y well for Aubrey and Troy. *** If memory serves, I recall that the late Inday Badiday called it “floral arrangement.” Then, the process became known as “landscaping” (no, it has nothing to do with gardening). Dr. Vicki Belo’s Medical Clinic has just stamped a
business name to it — Femilif t. If you’ve been reading the tabs, I guess you know that the procedure has been called (oops! no malice now) Pussykip. Yes, i t’s for women only. “Giving bir th, aging and obesit y can cause stretching and looseness of the muscles,” well, “down there,” so Vicki’s clinic has come up with the Femilif t procedure and enlisted Ai-Ai delas Alas as endorser (“I swear it’s tighter!” she proudly proclaims on the Belo billboards) not because she has greatly “loosened” up but, said Ai-Ai, “I want it to be firmer” (actually she used a color ful Tagalog term which cannot be printed here). The procedure, lasting 10 minutes per session (an additional t wo are needed for premium result), costs P30,000 per. Ai-Ai went through it before she ac-

OULD it be? Or is it made for our imagination to run absolutely wild with?
The Toyota FT-1 (aka Future Toyota 1 or Supra Concept) is definitely elegant in all aspects. Is it the nex t Supra though? Is it nex t in line to the Lexus LFA? This concept as i t’s ti tled, was meant as a realization of Mr. Toyoda’s dictate to install more “waku-doki,” or hear t-palpitating excitement, into the company’s traditionally straight-laced design. Wi th no mechanical specs released, we’re only lef t to use our imagination as to what could possibly be hiding under that hood. Although, I wouldn’t bet much on seeing a turbocharged inline-six, those have been long gone, basically prehistoric. Yet. Imagine seeing a 5.0L V8, now that would be realistic; seeing as the Lexus RC F has it stocked. Having gone through countless pictures, the F1-inspired cockpit is, in my opinion, bare. I mean, sure it has a heads-up display, electronic gauges from the looks of it but, what else does it really of fer? Although, this only being the concept design, many improvements are yet to be seen, displayed in auto shows across America. Beneath a transparent glass front hood, an engine cover hides a vir tual powerplant. Could be gerbils in there, for all we know. But don’t be surprised if the FT-1 eventually makes i t into production. Supposedly rif fing of f

It is an aggressive, track-focused spor ts car concept with a presence that has been amplified for shock and awe.”(Quoted from Driving.ca) With the FT-1 supposedly taking bits and pieces from its predecessors – 2000GT, Celica, Supra, MR2 and current FT-86 and Scion FRS, you can defini tely see the similari ties! T
RAVELING is really essential for all the food fanatics out there who want to taste every thing the world has to of fer. But have you ever visited a place that has a wide variety of international menu to choose from? At Mangkok International Cuisine, you will sure find the food that you’re craving for. They have the most color ful dishes and the tastiest bites. A cuisine is a specific set of cooking traditions and practices, of ten associated with a specific culture or region. Each cuisine involves food preparation in a par ticular style, of food and drink of par ticular types, to produce individually consumed items or distinct meals. It is frequently named af ter the region or place where it originated. It is also primarily influenced by the ingredients that are available locally or through trade. International Cuisine means the dif ferent cooking styles from countries around the world. Each country has its own cooking/ cuisine and each cuisine is an ar t in itself. Some of my favorites cuisines are Italian, Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Mexican, French, Greek, Indian and of course our very own Filipino cuisines. Most countries have a well-known or famous dish or ingredient that is associated with their cuisine. But whatever cooking you try, it is always fun to savor dishes from so many dif ferent countries. We’ve dined at Mangkok International Cuisine, located in 1075 Notre Dame Ave. (beside Subway, close and adjacent to TechVoc). They just star ted their business here in Winnipeg last February 14, 2014. The food was great with excellent service and a warm welcoming ambience. Mangkok International Cuisine derived its name froma MANGKOK which is a round deep dish or basin used for food during the olden times in the Southeast Asian Pacific region. From plain historic crude basin, mangkok has evolved into a decorative display of ar tistic imagination from east to west. Temporary Worker Program needs to be fixed
There has been a shift in thinking on the issue of foreign workers and the role they play here in Canada. Prior to the current Government taking office, Canada received maybe 140,000 to 160,000 temporary foreign workers a year and you rarely heard any complaints. In recent years, the current Government has allowed that
number to hit well over 300,000 in one year. What is the purpose of that dramatic increase? Allegations of wage suppression in Canada, using anti-immigration tactics, and other unflattering accusations are being leveled at the Harper Government. I suspect a combination of factors has caused this swelling of numbers. All I know is that Canada does not need to have 330,000 plus foreign workers. What we need is better immigration policy.

Straight up Justin Trudeau on May 6 stated the following in a question he asked of the Prime Minister: “Mr. Speaker, throughout our history, Canada’s immigration policy has brought people here on a path to citizenship. Yet, because of the government, we are now on track to bringing in more temporary foreign workers next year than immigrants.” Implied in the question is something that I truly believe is important to recognize. OME years ago, then House Speaker Jose de Venecia regaled an audience of US Pinoys at the Philippine consulate in San Francisco with a portrait of a Philippines flying high on every conceivable front. During the open forum, I candidly commented that if it wasn’t because I could see who was delivering the talk, I could have sworn he was describing another country. I showed him several newspaper headlines that contradicted many of the rosy things he had reported. As much can be said about the statements of Noynoy Aquino and the commentaries of authoritative individuals, as well as the media. They are often contradictory, the points of reference are confusing and, as a result, people end up being incredulous. Frankly, trying to understand Noynoy Aquino has become a difficult undertaking. Here’s what he said in a recent speech:
The point I am trying to make is that when dealing with the needs of Canada’s economy, we need to focus on immigration policy first and temporary workers second. It is also important to note that the temporary foreign worker program today plays a critical role in Canada’s economy and needs to be fixed.
OR the past few months, the temporary foreign worker program has been in the news a lot. Let there be no doubt -- the program is broken. Sadly, the limited moratorium that the government recently put in place was completely avoidable. While this moratorium prevents employers who have been misusing or abusing the system from continuing their practices, the freeze is also penalizing businesses that have not done anything wrong except use the program the way the Conservative government has managed it. Both small and large businesses in communities all across Canada have been adversely affected by the moratorium.

Going by the unimpressive record of performance of Roxas, one could believe that Aquino was referring to him in warning against “ampaw” candidates and leaders who would be unable to “continue and improve” on the “reforms” of the administration. “All our projects in the straight and narrow path – from agriculture, to infrastructure, to tourism, even public service – every initiative of ours in the past years, according to NEDA (National Economic and Development Authority), will decrease the number of Filipinos under the poverty line by 3 percentage points from the first semester of 2012, towards 2013.” In contrast, Socioeconomic
T
Street talk Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan was quoted by media admitting that despite the economic growth of more than 7 percent in recent years, among the highest rates in Asia, unemployment has remained high while the rate of poverty has barely fallen. “Simply stated, the gains have yet to materialize into actual, tangible improvements in the lives of the majority of the people,” Balisacan’s report stated.

Killing spree HE danger when authorities fail to catch thrill killers is not only the obvious, which is that they can continue killing, but also that their capers might inspire copycat crimes. So the public has greeted with relief the reported arrest of six men in connection with a shooting spree that left four persons dead in one day in Quezon City.

Police reported finding guns and grenades in a raid on the suspects’ lair in Quezon City on Tuesday. The raiders said those arrested – Alsaid Mindalano, Bochary Mindalano, Anmad Madkadato, Cesar Ate, Mangontawar Monib and a 16-year-old boy – were also wanted for armed robbery and the killing of a policeman and a sales executive. Mohammad Sandigan, the alleged gunman in the killing spree, is still at large. If he is not apprehended soon, he is bound to continue killing. Police must also determine where the suspects obtained their weapons and ammunition. Their lair reportedly has a makeshift firing range. Believing the suspects to be heavily armed, about 50 policemen were deployed for the raid the other day. The killing spree once again highlights how easy it is for civilians in this country to obtain deadly weapons, despite the existence of tough laws regulating gun possession. It is not unusual for armed bank robbers and carjackers to have more firepower than pursuing cops. Some quarters have expressed concern that those arrested may be fall guys, amid strong public pressure to end the killing spree. If this is true, the police will only have a bigger headache if the deadly attacks continue. Public doubts will be dispelled if the thrill killings end and the victims get justice. Philstar

HE Bible lists several dads who were the kind of fathers whose examples are worth following. I have chosen three fantastic fathers in the Bible who got the attention of heaven. On one hand what they did was spectacular. On the other hand they only did what is expected of every dad. That’s the wonderful thing about being a parent, even the common, ordinary things we do can have a tremendous impact. Going to work 5 days a week. Coming home every night. Coming home sober every night. Bringing the paycheck home to support the family. Being faithful to your wife. Being a moderate provider and a shelter from harm and evil. Throwing a ball. Sipping coffee from a disposable cup. Pushing a bicycle with no training wheels. Saying “no.” Saying “yes.” Those things are so simple anyone can do them. But what makes them grand is not everyone has the boldness to actually do them. The men we will consider as followworthy fathers are: Noah, Job and Joshua. These three guys are household names. Most of us know their stories. They’re famous Bible characters. They are super-heroes of the faith. Yet each of them did something which today’s dad can easily duplicate. Noah saved the race by saving his family (Genesis 6:5-10). When the world was falling apart, one father went about life in such a way as to find favor with God in heaven. Every thought and every deed of every man was wicked. God planned to wipe mankind from the face of the earth. Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD because he was a righteous man, blameless among the people of

AMILIES are fragile and unresolved conflict can hurt families. It can damage and destroy them. What is said of the family also applies to the church family as well. I believe that’s why there is such a strong and violent attack on the family. Divide and destroy the family you can cripple the church. In Mark 3:25 (GN) “If a family divides itself into groups which fight each other, that family will fall apart.” Living Bible: “A home filled with strife and division destroys itself.” It would be a good thing for couples planning to get married to learn something about conflict management. We go into these things totally blind. How many of you, before you got married, somebody set you down and taught you how to fight fair? Conflict in the home is inevitable. Every person is uniquely different. We have different desires, tastes, interests, talents, abilities, and personality traits. We look at life differently. We don’t or want always see eye to eye on everything. Therefore we’re going to clash because we’re different. Today we want to look at

Fathers worth following They set their families on a godly path leading by example. They left footprints worth following. They did simple things we all can do. They did right when it would have been easier, even acceptable to do wrong. They prayed faithfully for their children. And they chose the Lord as God of their life and let everyone know it. his time, and he walked with God. Because he dared to be different rather than cowering to the spiritual climate of his peers, God saw a redeeming quality in the people He had created. What a thought, to consider that one man living right in wicked world could get God’s attention. When the Lord looked at the world he saw a depressing picture. But when He saw Noah, He must have sat a little straighter in His throne. A smile must have formed on His face. And in that moment, as He considered Noah, God devised a redemptive plan. He decided on a way to save the one man who did what was right, and his family. The world over, “dad” is known to stand for a cause he believes in, even when that stand puts him in the minority. Dads, it doesn’t matter what the rest of the world is doing, live right and you will secure the honor of your family. Your integrity may spare your family from the judgement of God. In fact, the way one man lives sometimes alters the course of world events. Job prayed for his children (Job 1:1-5). Job got God’s attention. Not because he was the richest man around, but because he was blameless and because as a father he faithfully prayed for his children. Job’s faithfulness in this responsibil-
ity has always impressed me. He prayed for his children just in case any of them had sinned. He didn’t wait for a neighbor to report he had seen one of his children doing wrong. He knew the weakness of human nature. He prayed for them “whether they needed it or not.” It was Job’s burden and prayer that his kids always honor God which gave the Lord such confidence in him. There’s not a dad in the world who can’t adopt this habit of intercession for the hearts of his family members. Every one of us can pray. Every morning when we wake up we can take our family before the throne of God in prayer. Every night before we go to bed we can call our children by name. And all through the day, as they come to mind, we can breathe a prayer on their behalf. Pray for them on special occasions. Tests. Games. Jobs. Dates. (Like I had to tell you that!) Weddings. Babies. On and on... Our children will never outgrow our prayers, or the need for our prayers. Job’s children were all grown and on their own. But he never stopped the custom he developed when they were young. We don’t have to be superheroes to pray for our families.

Living Hope But if we do pray for them, they may never know we aren’t. Joshua chose the Lord for his family (Josh. 24:14-16). When Israel was about to enter her third generation of leadership, Joshua set the example for every home in the nation. Not only that, he also set the tone for every father who would follow after him. When we leave this world our greatest legacy is the one which shows the direction we left. The most important thing we can do in our death is to let those we leave know where we are going - where you stand with the Lord. How many funerals have you attended and had someone come to you with these words, “I believe he made his peace with the Lord.” And you can tell by the way they say it they are hoping for a confirmation from you? They don’t know, they’re just hoping the departed loved one in question made peace with God in his final moments. What a sad way to leave those you love - wondering where you will spend eternity. When Joshua laid down the baton of leadership, he made clear the direction he wanted the nation to pursue. I realize
we cannot impose our faith and standard of conduct on the next generation once we are gone, but we can let them know our dreams and faith while we are here. Joshua as much as told Israel, “I don’t know what you will do when I’m not here. But this is what I hope you will do.” What made Joshua a great father to follow was his determination that he and his family would follow the Lord. Three famous fathers. Men who loved their families and served the Lord. Noah who lived different from the people around him. Job who prayed for his family, that their hearts would stay pure. Joshua who chose the Lord to be Lord of his home. They set their families on a godly path leading by example. They left footprints worth following. They did simple things we all can do. They did right when it would have been easier, even acceptable to do wrong. They prayed faithfully for their children. And they chose the Lord as God of their life and let everyone know it. You can do those things. Start with choosing the Lord. Then live for God and let everyone know it. You can make a world of difference. Restoring harmony in your home Rev. Ruel Calitis Camia
Shout Out three things: The cause for conflict The reactions to conflict The resolution to conflict I. THE CAUSES, THE REASONS, FOR CONFLICT The Word of God is very clear and very blunt when it comes to conflict. Regardless if the conflict is in the home or the church, God’s word says that there is one reason for conflict. James 4:1-3 1From whence come wars and fightings among you? Come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? 2Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because
Ask yourself, “How much of this is my fault?” Before you start accusing and blaming and attacking, Jesus says check your own self out. Am I the problem? Am I the cause of it? Is there a blind spot in my life? When you’re in a conflict, before you start getting the sawdust out of your husband’s/wife’s eye, get the telephone pole out of your own eye. ye ask not. 3Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. James 4:1-2 “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but you don’t get it.” The cause of conflict is competing desires. I want what I want. You want what you want. We have competing needs and interests. When you got married, you stood in front of an altar or justice of the peace and you had many expectations on that wedding day. Most of them will never be fulfilled. They were unrealistic. II. HOW DO YOU NORMALLY REACT TO CONFLICT? Usually one of five ways:
1. My way. This is one way of reacting. “My way” says “I win. I assert my will until you give in. I’m totally right and you’re totally wrong. My way is the only way.” Some of you fight this way in marriage. You just keep going until you win. 2. No way. This says, “I withdraw. I back away from the conflict. I ignore the problem. I avoid it at all costs. Nothing is ever resolved because I just keep walking away from conflict. 3. Your way. I give in and roll over and play dead. I want your approval so I pretend like I’m a doormat and I always give into your wishes. It’s always your way. It’s a very peaceful way to live and it’s also a very frustrating way to live. 4. Half way. You compromise. I give in a little. You give
in a little. You win some and you lose some. That’s better than the first three. 5. Our way. We work out mutual goals together. I not only care about solving the problem but I care about the relationship and I care about you. I want us to have a mutually satisfactory resolution to this conflict because you are important and the relationship is important. III. RESOLUTION OF CONFLICT I want us to look at the Word of God and see eight steps on how to resolve conflict that way. 1. TIAN.

Manitoba NDP stands with seniors and persons with disabilities in Canada post debate: Saran THIS week in the Manitoba Legislature, The Maples MLA Mohinder Saran brought forward a resolution calling on the Federal Government to reverse their hasty decision to eliminate door-to-door mail delivery, a service many seniors and persons with disabilities depend on. Canada Post announced last December that they will replace this impor tant service wi th communi t y mailboxes, wi thout first consulting local governments. While 12,500 homes in nor theast Winnipeg have already been slated to stop receiving door-to-door mail this fall, the Cit y of Winnipeg did not receive advance notice of this plan, and councilors voted this winter to urge Canada Post to delay this transition until a substantive consultation process can occur. “I have heard from many seniors and others in The Maples that this is not what they want,” said Saran. “This decision will be particularly hur t ful to those with mobility issues
who depend on door-to-door delivery.” Issues identified with communit y mailboxes include security, space issues in older neighbourhoods, and accessibili t y during harsh Winnipeg winters when the boulevards are covered in several feet of snow. Instead of choosing to stand up for Mani tobans and suppor t NDP MLA Mohinder Saran’s resolution, Brian Pallister and his PCs sided instead wi th the federal Conser vatives and their decision to cancel home deliver y. “Mail delivery also keeps Manitobans connected,” added Saran. “From grandparents who receive a painting from their grandchild, to happy recipients of bir thday and holiday cards, to the increasing number of people who make purchases online—we all agree that Canada Post needs to address real concerns from our communi ties, so that Mani toba seniors and families continue to receive the highest possible standard of service.”

should we not consider that he or she could potentially land in Canada? Justin’s question is rooted in what I believe is previous Liberal Government thinking, including his father’s approach to immigration as a whole. Back in the 70s when the temporary foreign worker program was first introduced by then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, it was designed to help fill the void in the labour market created by the lack of skilled workers in certain industries and professions. Trudeau back then also developed immigration programs that supported the economy while, at the same time, enabled
the worker to not only work in Canada but also to land in Canada. It was a Liberal administration that opened up Manitoba’s garment industry. It was Trudeau’s government at that time that allowed for waves of workers to immigrate to Canada in order to meet our economic needs while, at the same time, allowed them to become permanent residents. Think of the number of garment workers who were successful in getting siblings, families and fiancées here as landed immigrants. It was also around the same time when the live- in care giver program came into existence, a program that still exists up to today. Former Prime Minister Jean
Chretien created Canada’ s provincial nominee program, which has been used as a tool to allow workers to immigrate to Canada. The point I am trying to make is that when dealing with the needs of Canada’s economy, we need to focus on immigration policy first and temporary workers second. It is also important to note that the temporary foreign worker program today plays a critical role in Canada’s economy and needs to be fixed. I suspect or at least hope to see Canada’s auditor general get involved to ensure that the integrity of the program prevails. www.mpkevin.ca

horoscope ARIES (March 21-April 19): If you’re still feeling as if your mind is a big fog bank and your emotions are hailstones, you might not be quite ready to face the usual demands you juggle from day to day, much less any extra responsibilities. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Now that you’ve got your outbursts under control, you can begin to examine the cause. You are obviously feeling uncharacteristically vulnerable and sensitive, but what triggered this reaction? Perhaps a combination of small events built up before you could adequately deal with them and the pressure broke through your self-control. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): There’s nothing flighty in your approach today. the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: Become a believer. That’s the starting point. Commit your life to Christ. You can’t have peace with other people until you first have peace with God. The Bible says if I’m not a Christian, if I’ve not committed my life to Christ, I’m at war with God. I’m in conflict with Him. I’m doing my own thing, I’m doing what I want to do and when
www.angperyodiko.ca n May 16-31, 2014 I’m having conflict with God vertically it spills out horizontally. Many marriage problems would be solved if everybody in the family would simply gather around the throne and give themselves to Jesus Christ. There would be harmony and unity. Please don’t put that off any longer. It is the foundation. Do it today. Open your heart up to Jesus Christ and become a believer. You’ll be amazed at the power for reconciliation that comes into your life when you are living with Jesus Christ in
your life on a moment by moment basis. That’s the foundation before anything else. 2. TALK TO GOD ABOUT THE CONFLICT. James 4:2 “You quarrel and you fight. You do not have because you do not ask of God.” Circle “ask God” Before you talk to the person you’re upset with talk to God about the conflict. Pray about it. Admit it to Him. You may end up solving it right there.
Many of the conflicts we have in life occur when we expect other people to meet needs which God expects Himself to meet. Many times we’re looking to other people to meet our needs and God says, “I want you to ask Me.” He says, “The solution to conflict resolution is not to fight but to ask ME.” When I’m expecting somebody else to meet all my needs there’s a tell-tale warning light that comes on. It’s called Anger. Anger is like a red flag. It’s a warning light that says “I’m expecting somebody to meet my needs that God wants to meet. I’m asking somebody else to be God.” That’s unfair. 3. ANALYZE THE PROBLEM. Matthew 7:3 “Why then do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the log in your own eye. Take the log out of your own eye first and then you will be able to see and take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”

Check it out. Am I the problem? Am I being demanding? Am I being unrealistic? Am I oversensitive? Am I impatient? Am I insensitive? Am I the problem? After you’ve done these first three things: you’ve committed your life to Christ, you’ve talked to God about the problem, you’ve analyzed it, then... 4. SCHEDULE A PEACE CONFERENCE. getting things right with other people over worship. He says, if you go to church and “If you remember your brother has something against you leave your gift in front of the altar and go make peace with your brother. Then come back and offer your gift to God.” Jesus says don’t ignore conflict. If you’ve got a problem and you’re coming to church, you get ready to give the offering and you remember the problem, Jesus says go get it right. Notice it does says “Leave your gift at the altar.” You cannot worship effectively with unresolved conflict. Schedule a Peace Conference to resolve any and all conflict. Conflict is seldom resolved accidentally. It is done intentionally and deliberately. It doesn’t just happen. Practical suggestions for the peace conference: A. Choose the right time. Timing is everything in conflict resolution. Don’t drop a bomb and surprise them. The wrong timing in conflict resolution is disaster. Some of you are morning people and some of you are night people. You need to find a time that is best for both of you. The best time to deal with an issue is when you’re both at your best. Choose a time when everybody is comfortable and relaxed. B. Choose the right place. I’d suggest a neutral place, a place away from other people, away from the telephone, where you’re not going to be interrupted. Choose a place where you can sit down and really deal with the issue. Have a place to go to talk about the issues. C. Pray before the meeting. Each of you. Get your own heart right and come to the meeting with a spirit of reconciliation, and a spirit of forgiveness, ready to work on the issue, not attacking each other but attacking the problem. We’re on the same team. Don’t fix the blame; fix the issue, fix the problem. Come with a positive attitude toward this peace conference. Work on the issues. There’s going to be some resolution. It’s not for me to blame and unload -- accuse and excuse. Continued on next issue...

TFC 20th anniversary gala show salutes the Filipino
REDWOOD CITY, CA, May 1, 2014 – It was in the 1980s when ABS-CBN Corporation Chairman Emeritus Eugenio “Geny” Lopez Jr. ar ticulated the expansion of his vision: “We will serve the Filipino wherever he may be – worldwide.” How exactly that would come about was anybody’s guess then. Fast forward to April 23, 2014 at the Elizabeth A. Hangs Theater of Santa Clara Convention Center, in the hear t of Silicon Valley - the Innovation Capi tal of the World: ABS-CBN through The Filipino Channel (TFC) marked an unparalleled, historic Filipino milestone by celebrating its 20th year of continuous service to Filipinos all over the world via a glit tering formal gala filled with energy, nostalgia and excitement. Before hundreds of company employees, leaders from various sectors in the Filipino American communit y and cable and satellite industry executives, ABS-CBN Nor th America Managing Director Olivia De Jesus acknowledged three Filipinos who road mapped the realization of Don Geny’s vision: his two sons, ABS-CBN Corporation Chairman Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III and ABS-CBN Global COO Rafael “Raf fy” Lopez, and former ABS-CBN International Manager of Net work Operations and Director
Jose Ramon “Monchet” Olives. “Wi thout their persistence, tenacity, and vision, we would not be enjoying the stories from people back home, get the news as it happens back home, and bring Home just a lit tle bit closer ever y time we turn on TFC,” De Jesus said in honor of the three. ABS-CBN Global COO Raf f y Lopez honored all the “TFC pioneers” and paid tribute to everyone who worked for TFC, a channel that star ted in 1994 with just eight employees in a garage in Daly City. Now with a global employee workforce and of fices in Nor th America, Asia, Australia, Europe and Middle East and millions of TFC viewers, Lopez credited the employees, the organization’s ability to evolve and the purity of his father’s vision and mission as anchors that helped TFC navigate through the challenges in the last 20 years. “Galing ng Filipino”: Honoring the Greatness of the Filipino Af ter enjoying the food, drinks and activities during reception that included the unveiling of the TFC History, Community and Achievement Walls designed by well-known Filipino American muralist Eliseo Ar t Silva, filmmaker Nelson Datu Anderson of Cinemagago and their team from Los Angeles, the much awai ted TFC Gala show opened

wi th the channel’s first ever goodwill ambassador as host, Philippine Concer t King Mar tin Nievera, singing lines from the earliest TFC theme song: “So run home to TFC. 20 years ‘til eternity. One vision, One dream, Let me hear you scream, “At home ka sa T-F-C.” The show’s director, ABS-CBN Global Head of Theatricals John-D Lazatin, and his creative and technical teams wove the TFC narrative by blending first-hand pioneer stories on video, stunning visuals from giant screens using cut ting edge technology, and matching stor y telling songs from Nievera. But just as its founding vision, the TFC story is more about the Filipino that it has commit ted to serve. It is the stage that showcases with great pride the best of the Filipino, his or her greatness or as they say
in Filipino, the “galing”. Showing that “galing” in the program were, among others: the rise of TFC from a channel no one in the industr y believed to the success stor y for ethnic programming that it is today; the par ticipation of some local celebrities from long-running TFC shows represented by Gel Santos-Relos, Henni Espinosa and Yong Chavez of Balitang America, Angelo Barga of Barangay USA, At ty. Michael Gur finkel of Citizen Pinoy, and Michi Valeriano, Lee Robin Salazar and Tet Hernandez of Adobo Nation; the much applauded live per formance of Filipina American “X Factor” standout, Ellona Santiago; and the presentation of the 2014 Nor th America Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Bayaning Pilipino Awards Finalists.

Balisacan told media that he doubted the feasibility of reducing the incidence of poverty to 16.6 percent by 2016. Another news report said that “with just two years to go before its term ends, the Aquino administration plans to spend more on infrastructure and introduce other reforms to try to make economic growth inclusive and lift millions out of poverty. “
ABS-CBN Publishing CEO Ernie Lopez, Head of Narrowcast March Ventosa, Head of Sports Dino Laurena and OIC of Corporate Communications Kane Choa.
Aquino reportedly beamed: “You see, we just did what was right. We talked to investors honestly, and the result: 91.43% employment rate at the semiconductors and electronic industry – just a little more and we will reach 100%.” And he added: “This is just proof that when Filipinos are given the right chances, they will truly shine, which contributes to their personal and the country’s success.” But here’s what another news item stated:
But why the last two years? What happened to the first four years of his term?
“The number of jobless Filipinos grew in January compared to a year ago despite the country’s strong economic performance.
According to UP economics professor and former Budget Secretary Ben. Diokno, if the slow roll-out of the much touted public-private partnership initiative was any indication, the implementation of the updated Philippine Development Plan would likely be sluggish.
“The Labor Force Survey (LFS) released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) yesterday showed the country’s unemployment rate at 7.5 percent or an estimated 2.9 million individuals.
Said Diokno, “So far, for the last three and a half years, the administration has consistently failed to implement what little has been budgeted. It has to demonstrate better capability to complete projects.”
“The unemployment rate in January 2013 was at 7.1 percent or 2.7 million individuals. The latest survey did not cover provinces in Eastern Visayas that were devastated by Super Typhoon Yolanda.”
That was putting it kindly. Indeed, the Aquino government has developed a reputation for being long on plans and short on implementation.
According to Diokno, the latest unemployment rate is inconsistent with the picture of a growing economy. “A growing economy should be creating more jobs, not losing them,” Diokno said.
Last May 1, on the occasion of Labor Day, Aquino reportedly waxed proud of the “success of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority’s Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP)” which ostensibly resulted in 130 scholars being trained and 113 being hired.
He cited a 2013 World Bank study that indicates that by the time Aquino leaves office in 2016, the state of unemployment in the country will be as dismal as it was before he assumed the presidency, if not worse.
Said the news report, “The program also trained 100 scholars at Integrated Microelectronic Incorporated, and 400 at Alliance Mansols Incorporated, all of whom were employed.
Against this background, the newspapers recently reported the results of a March 2014 Pulse Asia survey indicating that Jojo Binay would be a “landslide” winner if the presidential elections were held “today.” Among the reasons, observers noted, have been
Binay’s impressive performance in the area of housing and OFW affairs. But on Labor Day, Aquino delivered an out-of-town speech with a very intriguing message that observers felt had something to do with the Pulse Asia report: “My request to you: If you believe that what we are doing is right, if you don’t want what we’ve started on the straight and narrow path to go to waste, let’s pick a leader who will continue and further improve on the reforms we’ve made. Let’s pick someone deserving so that the transformations we want in our society will be permanent and wide-reaching.” Over a month earlier, Aquino also cautioned against voting for “ampaw” candidates, meaning, candidates with no substance. These exhortations were aired in the wake of scandalous displays of incompetence and serious questions about the integrity of high officials in his administration. The “presidentiable” that Aquino is widely believed to be committed to endorse is DILG Secretary Mar Roxas, he of the foul mouth, the fatal bungling in Zamboanga, the incomprehensible “convergent approach” concept of relief and rehabilitation operations in the wake of typhoon Yolanda where no one called the shots, and a dismal track record as Secretary of Transportation & Communications and as Secretary of the Department of Interior & Local Government. Going by the unimpressive record of performance of Roxas, one could believe that Aquino was referring to him in warning against “ampaw” candidates and leaders who would be unable to “continue and improve” on the “reforms” of the administration. It makes you wonder: Was Aquino actually endorsing Binay for president?
