The new SWS survey found 3.6 million Filipino families, or 16.3 percent of respondents, claiming they had experienced having nothing to eat in the past three months. The new hunger rate was 1.5 points below the 17.8 percent (estimated 3.9 million families) recorded in March and 3.2 points below last year’s 19.5 percent annual average. The SWS also said moderate hunger fell by 1.5 points to 13.5 percent or an estimated 3.3 million households in June. Moderate hunger refers to those who experience having nothing to eat “only once” or “a few times” in the last three months, the SWS said. But severe hunger, which refers to those who experience having without food “often” or “always,” stayed at 2.8 percent. “The 1.5-point fall in hunger... between March and June 2014 was due to falling hunger among the poor, food poor and non-food poor, combined with rising hunger among the non-poor,” the SWS noted.
SPEAKING in Manila after talks with Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario, EU High Representative Catherine Ashton stressed that the European Union is the largest investor in the Philippines.

Resolution on Crame detention for senators withdrawn
IMPORTANT NOTICE IF YOU’RE WITH FIRST LINE MORTGAGE PLEASE CALL
204-801-3505
MANILA (July 31) - Philippines - Senate Deputy Minority Leader Vicente Sotto III yesterday withdrew a Senate resolution that he and Sen. Gregorio Honasan filed Monday that seeks to express the intent of senators that they support the continued detention of Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Ramon Revilla Jr. and Jinggoy Estrada at the Philippine National Police (PNP) detention cells in Camp Crame, Quezon City. Sotto said he got legal advice from some well-meaning friends, who recommended that the resolution should first be reviewed. Citing the constitutional right that an accused is deemed innocent until proven guilty, Sotto and Honasan have filed Senate Resolution 798 that would express the Senate’s consent to allow the three senators to be detained at Camp Crame for the remainder of the trial at the Sandiganbayan on plunder and graft charges filed against them in connection with the pork barrel scam. The reportedly ailing Enrile is temporarily detained at the PNP General Hospital in Camp Crame, while Estrada and Revilla are locked up at the PNP Custodial Center also in Crame. “I thought it would be best to review it first, compare it to the other resolutions before, like in the case of Senator Trillanes, so that it might not be misinter-
preted or misunderstood as the Senate interfering with judicial proceedings,” Sotto said. Trillanes, a former Navy officer, had been elected senator in 2007 while he was still detained for a pending mutiny case filed against him and other rebel soldiers who took over the Oakwood building in Makati in 2003 to protest alleged rampant corruption in the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. For her part, Sen. Cynthia Villar said she does not see any problem if the Senate would pass a resolution that would allow the three senators’ continued detention in Camp Crame. “I’m always supportive of the welfare of our colleagues in the Senate. It would be expected at the Senate that we would be kind with our fellow senators. And whether the Sandiganbayan will listen to us is another story. Personally, it’s not party stand or what, but you have to be kind to your fellow senators,” she added. Estrada also asked the Sandiganbayan not to consider transferring him to a regular jail from the PNP custodial center. “He is an incumbent senator of the Republic of the Philippines, having served as such since 2004. He is a son of a former president and a member of the former first family. He was a mayor of the city of San
Juan for many years,” said his lawyers led by Jose Flaminiano. Estrada said in a 12-page opposition to a motion to transfer detention filed by ombudsman prosecutors that those who insist on putting him in an ordinary jail wish to penalize him for a crime that has yet to be proven and of which he is still presumed innocent. His lawyers said Estrada’s present detention inside Camp Crame adequately serves the purposes of the Sandiganbayan to have him detained while undergoing trial. The three justices of the Sandiganbayan Third Division which is handling the plunder cases of Janet Lim-Napoles and Enrile inspected yesterday the detention cell of the businesswoman in Camp Bagong Diwa. A convoy of vehicles ferrying Third Division Presiding Justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang and Associate Justices Samuel Martires and Alex Quiroz arrived at Camp Bagong Diwa at about 4:40 p.m. Reporters were barred from entering the camp and Third Division executive clerk of court Dennis Pulma said the justices saw Napoles and fellow detainee lawyer Jessica “Gigi” Reyes, Enrile’s former chief of staff, but did not talk to them. Pulma said Napoles and Reyes were both resting when the justices arrived. – Philstar

PH presses freeze on sea row action
MANILA (July 31) - The Philippines will push for a moratorium on any activity that could raise tensions in the South China Sea and West Philippine Sea during next month’s Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Myanmar, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario said yesterday. The proposed moratorium will form part of a package of solutions to the territorial row being readied by Manila, Del Rosario told reporters after a meeting with European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission vice president Catherine Ashton. Ashton, in her meeting with Del Rosario, reiterated the EU’s call on all parties to seek peaceful solutions to the territorial spat through dialogue and cooperation in accordance with international law, particularly
the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. China’s growing aggressiveness in staking its claims in the South China Sea and the West Philippine Sea is stoking tension in the region. Other nations with territorial claims in the region are Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan. Del Rosario said other counties welcomed the Philippine initiative. Manila, he said, is also trying to set up a meeting among claimant states. “We’re trying to get as many parties to adopt it as possible but I think we’re working on the claimant states to consider that,” Del Rosario said. “We’ll present it in every forum because it’s constructive, it’s positive, it’s comprehensive.” He also said President Aquino was right about not mentioning the country’s maritime spat with China in his State of the Nation Address. -Philstar

headed by Mr. Adelio Angelito Cruz, Chargé d'Affaires of the Philippine Embassy in Tripoli and leader of the Rapid Response Team," the DFA said. DFA likewise called on all remaining Filipinos in Libya to immediately get in touch with the embassy in Tripoli and register for repatriation. The survey research institute also said that overall hunger fell by 6.4 points to 21.1 percent among the self-rated poor, but rose by 3.2 points to 10.3 percent among the not poor/on the borderline. Meanwhile, hunger among the food-poor fell by 3.8 points to 27 percent and by 0.8 points to 9.6 percent among the not food poor/food borderline. “At any point in time, hunger among the self-rated food poor is always greater than hunger among the self-rated poor,” the SWS said. By area, overall hunger rose by 3.3 points to 16.3 percent (about 456,000 families) in Metro Manila. Moderate hunger rose to 12.3 percent, while severe hunger remained at three percent in the region. In balance Luzon, overall hunger dropped by 5.3 points to 14.7 percent (1.4 million families). Revisiting the Philippines: Always an amazing experience
I was able to take my daughter Cindy on her first trip to the Philippines. As in the past, I usually attempt to accomplish four things while in that country: help people out with immigration matters, meet with local politicians, speak with university students, and spend some time as a tourist. Even though I spoke to people about immigration matters almost everywhere I went, this time I hosted only one formal immigration workshop. Lasting over two hours, the workshop was attended by 52 participants who were very interested to immigrate to Canada under the Manitoba nominee program. I took the chance to also review immigration files of several attendees. The purpose of the workshop was to inform people about the

Over the past few years, Manitoba's nominee program has become harder to qualify and it is often taking a longer time to process. Earlier this month, the Provincial Government made a serious change with regard to receiving applications and that became a big issue at the workshop. A deadline of July 31 was put in place earlier this month for submitting applications by people from outside Canada. I hope to do a more detailed story

Matter of timing
HEN we were preparing for bed the other night, we were less than 100 million souls on this part of the earth. Then in a matter of minutes, we were, presto, more than 100 million Filipinos. Which means that there will be more mouths wide open seeking milk from the breasts of nursing mothers and more cans of milk needed for the artificially fed ones. That was how it appeared to us at midnight of July 29th when the Philippines noted the rise of its population to 100 million. Reports say that the birth of babies at that time led to the gift-giving. The newborn picked to represent Cebu City’s entry into the count was given a “lifetime membership in Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth), and a newborn starter kit worth P5,000.” The baby named Kyle Olendang was born at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center

Now, if you ask me, our President really knows something about “timing.” He did “time” his revelation about poverty incidence with the Popcom report about our population gain. (VSMMC) whose chief also said the hospital will shoulder all the expenses for the child’s birth. Likewise, all other infants born in various parts of the Central Visayas at that time were also given similar gifts by the Population Commission (Popcom). But of course, while the country celebrates the rise in the population of the Philippines to 100 million, little do the newborn babies know the implications of their birth to the “constant” resources of the Earth. Because of this growth, people will also have to continue to be creative enough to produce more resources to feed the new-

born. Also they should be aware of the methods of family planning to ensure that our population won’t balloon further and thus overstrain our resources. According to the Commission on Population (Popcom), “the search for the 100 millionth baby” was open to all infants born at 12:06 a.m. or minutes later, in a health facility run by the national government or a government unit. All facilities that participated in the search must be certified as observing the Philippine Standard Time and the birth must be certified by a doctor or a birth attendant. Also, the babies must be born through normal spontaneous delivery in order to be qualified in the

F there’s more than gas-causing hot air in the latest rumors of a brewing coup, the plotters should go ahead with it. And when it is launched, authorities should do more than laugh off the attempt as a tired drama staged by people with too much time on their hands. Soldiers and police in the active service who participate in the plot must face the full force of the law and administrative rules that can warrant their dismissal from their organization. Coup attempts are no laughing matter. During the presidency of Corazon Aquino, they prevented the country from taking off and building on the gains of the 1986 people power revolution.
The Arroyo administration, even when facing the worst corruption scandals, repelled every coup attempt. Presidents have been unseated twice in this country, but only when one element is present: popular support. People power, which threw out Ferdinand Marcos and Joseph Estrada, was absent in all the military plots to kick out Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from the presidency. Several coup plotters during the Arroyo administration, however, have been richly rewarded with elective and appointive positions in government. When destabilization attempts are seen to pay off, they are likely to be repeated. When military mutineers in the Arroyo administration failed to muster popular support, there was talk of people power fatigue. Filipinos now look to other paths for change. If coup plots fizzled out when there were numerous reasons for the people to want a leadership change, why will they succeed at this time under a president who, even as he is buffeted by controversies, is clearly bent on pursuing reforms? If there are soldiers and police unhappy enough to plot a coup, they should go ahead with it, and find out how many civilians will join them. And when they come out of the shadows, they should not be molly-coddled. There are laws and rules that must be applied if the nation wants to instill professionalism in the military and police. -Philstar

BOVE all else, guard your heart, for it affects everything you do.~ Proverbs 4:23 (NLT) ANUMANG bagay na meron ka tiyak na gagawa ito ng malaking pagbabago sa mga kilos mo. For example you bought a new car, madadalas ang pagmamaneho mo, nakabili ka ng bagong jogging shoes, tiyak madadalas ang pag jogging mo. Ang sino man na naiinvolve sa isang bagong pakikipag relAsyon, tiyak babaguhin din nito. New actions that weren't necessarily bad -- just odd. Let us look at some of them. Some signs that he was having an affair? Ang mga sumusunod ay ilan sa mga palatandaan na naranasan ng isang babae na itago na lang natin sa pangalang (_____________) 1. Shout Out 5. Our sex life lost its sizzle. On the rare occasions when we did make love, it felt awkwardly cold -- just a physical act, not an emotional connection. I think he may have felt as if he was being unfaithful to his girlfriend by sleeping with me. 6. He started to skip desserts and be very careful about what he ate -- he lost weight and started exercising. 7. He dyed his hair -- to cover the gray. "She" is twelve years younger than he is.
2. When he was home, he would seem restless and often claim he had "work" to do, so he spent a lot of time in the den -- with the door closed.
8. He seemed more shorttempered. Things that didn't usually bother him suddenly did. He was especially impatient with the children.
3. He started some new patterns that I thought were wonderful. He took the dog for long walks, and offered to run errands for me in the evenings. If I commented that I wished I had some cookies for the kids' lunches, he'd say, "I'll be happy to go to the store for you." I found out later that he'd call his mistress on his cell phone while he was walking or running errands.
9. After I saw the way he reacted to "her" at one time in a party, I asked him if there was something between them, and he lied to my face. Looking back, I know he lied to me about credit card and cell phone bills, and that most of the new clients he'd been taking to dinner were not clients at all.
4. He gave me a goofy, silly card for my birthday instead of his usual romantic, sentimental one, and he only signed his name.

They're looking for unusual movements or odd behaviors that may be an indication of danger. The agents have studied how innocent people usually behave, so they can spot a person who's acting "guilty." We can apply some of these lessons to guarding our marriages.
You don't need to be paranoid or to see things that aren't there. I don't recommend that you spy on your spouse . . . but if you need to, feel free. It would be wise, however, to be on guard. Magbantay at huwag naman maging Paranoid.
6. Taking more showers than usual;
Affairs begin in many ways and for many reasons, so we must be always on guard for the slightest hint of temptation. Because hints turn into flirtations, flirtations turn into attractions, attractions turn into affairs, and affairs turn into disasters. 1st Corinthians 10:13 says that God will always provide a way of escape, but we have to make a decision to run toward the door. When you're guarding your marriage, you're not guarding just your spouse, but guarding yourself too. Baka naman sa sobrang pagbabantay nakakalimutan mo ng maligo? Mag ayos ng sarili, maghanda ng pagkain at magpakita ng pagmamahal kay mister?

Beware of the barrenness of busyness.
8. Hiding credit card charges and cash withdrawals
Christians are experts at being busy doing very good things. Don’t ignore your desperate need for fun, laughing, dreaming and refreshment. Adjust your schedule and sacrifice if necessary if your life has kicked in to fast-forward.
These warning signs may indicate an affair: 1. Changing eating and sleeping patterns; 2. Wearing a different style of clothes; 3. Starting arguments or becoming very passive; 4. Working longer or different hours; 5. Pulling away from church and extended family;
9. Taking off his or her wedding ring. 10. Becoming secretive or defensive about phone calls and emails
Realize you can’t be close
friends with a person of the opposite sex. There are no exceptions. You can be co-workers, you can be group friends, yes; but you cross a line when you spend time alone. No lunches, no coffees, no e-mails that you wouldn’t want your spouse to see, no texts. I thought I could control my friendship. Even if there’s no sign of danger, keep boundaries intact. Very few people set out to have an affair—they fall into the trap. Recognize that no person is immune. I thought because I was a “Jesus girl,” I loved my husband and I wasn’t even attracted to this guy that I was immune. I thought I could control this friendship. I was wrong. He fed something in my heart that was empty. It made him irresistible to my selfish desires and I compromised. When Secret Service agents guard the President, they regard the President's life as more important than their own individual lives. Guard your marriages in the same way. You may be required to sacrifice part of your individual life -- hobbies, profession, TV time, computer time, sports activities -- to strengthen your marriage. If you're both willing to make your marriage a priority, however, and guard it from internal and external dangers, your home will be a safe haven. 1 Thess. 4:3 "It is God's will that you should be holy; that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like those who do not know God."

Winnipeg SpeedFest:
TheAftermath J
ULY 19h, 2014 was an epic day for Winnipeggers within the car scene. Winnipeg Speedfest, which reeled off at the RBC Convention Centre, was filled with stunning and over-the-top builds, vibrant paint jobs, bass-pumping stereo set-ups and amazingly detailed vehicles from all over the world.
Watching throughout Friday as everyone star ted coming in -- Subaru’s, all the S2000’s, Gonzo rolling in with the Cima (last week’s feature), Auto Gallery with all their vehicles, Vicious Alliance rolling in together, PegCityJDM, Not t Auto Group, LowMotive, Bomex Graphics, Chazz’s Auto Par ts and many others -- was thrilling to the last second. Ever yone in their space bucked down to work, polishing away, cleaning up, get ting the last to shine under those fluorescent lights in the Convention Centre. Walking around you feel like a kid, marveling at some of the most awesome cars in town: a Lamborghini Murcielago, McLaren SLR, Danvilles Laguna Blue S2000, Stevens “RootBeer” S2000, Gonzo’s insane drif t monster, S14 and of course Adam’s custom built R35 GTR (credits to Winnipeg HID). Again, everyone was there early, set ting up the final details, touch ups here,

Personally, shining up the last of the cars in the PegCityJDM booth, set ting up stickers and lanyards. 10am hit and people from lef t and right, took photos of every car imaginable, with speakers blaring with our incredible DJs providing great music to the delight of my good, personal friends DJ NCRASHB and DJ Bullet. Enter tainment throughout the day included: Winnipeg Glee Club, Fresh IE who opened for the BBoy Bat tle, Boss Dance Crew, Bea Jaime, Russell Unilowsky, Elesi, Lycosa, Tif fany Ponce, Swag and more! Models, who walked all around, snapping photos with all the car owners, ticket holders and of course VIP members. Car enthusiasts had a blast, posing with the lovely girls, taking snapshots of the super cars, with tons of selfies everywhere! Such an awesome sight to see, yet by the end was the real show – the SWIM WEAR, LINGERIE SET - a complete fashion show that was among the highlights of the SpeedFest. The beautiful ladies, strut ting their stuf f all over the stage, making all the guys just drop their jaws, whistles from lef t and right and the odd one get ting in trouble from their girlfriend for looking in the opposite direction, LOL, (this one’s for you guys). The rest of the night played out wonder fully, with awards presented by Cancer Care reps. Iz & Mimi: car lovers
When car boy meets car girl, they say equals to true love. Well, this couple had proved them right! Isaiah Christian Veron known as “IZ” was first in line and captured the heart of Mimi Kaida. IZ is known for his one-of-a-kind, “Mugen CRZ” and his hardwork and determination with Vicious Alliance. He is an Autobody Level 4 graduate from Red River College. Other than cars, he is also good at basketball. Mimi, on the other hand, is one of the few ladies who are fearless in driving stick-shift cars. She is currently working on her Pink '90 Miata named “Mimisaur” which is her dream car since she was 11 years old. Unlike IZ, she doesn’t want to go stanced but more tracked. She aims to be a drifter someday. Mimi is also the leader of the VA Angels, a group of hot, sexy import models. See her and her fellow angels on their upcoming events. The couple enjoys working on cars and cruising at night together. They are currently working on opening an autobody shop called Vicious Auto Customs along with other members of the crew. But for now, they are accepting side jobs at their garage. If you happen to spot this couple cruising in the city, don’t forget to say hi! (Instagram: @iz_veron @miikaida @va_angels @viciousalliance)

In an exclusive inter view with Gretchen Fulido of ABS-CBN, Melissa shared how how she found out about her pregnancy and how her non-showbiz boy friend reacted to it. “Sobrang suppor tive,” she said about her boy friend. “First na sinabi ko sa kanya, gano'n din, same kami ng r eaction. Actually, he didn't hesitate. Wala. Siyempr e, the baby is a blessing, you know. A baby coming into this world is a huge blessing to anyone.” She also explained why she chooses to keep her relationship private saying, “I've learned also na it's bet ter to keep your personal life to yourself. You have something to go home to, you have something to enjoy, sana maintindihan ng tao 'yon.” Melissa met her boy friend last year when she "decided to get out of my comfor t zone,” she said. Melissa and Paul Jake Castillo had ended their relationship last year. “I don't really go out, unless I'm with my close friends,” she said. “Iilan lang naman ang close friends ko. I'm always in my shell. “This time, I decided, I have to go out. I have to... parang lawakan ang pag-iisip ko, to meet new people. I really wanted to star t my journey being an adult,” and that’s when she met her present par tner. The 24-year-old actress knows that this news came as a surprise to everyone, but she assures them, especially her fans that “he's a good guy. Happy ako sa kanya. He makes me very happy.” -Philstar
Anne Curtis says “Dyesebel” made her
stronger
The tale of the most-loved mermaid ends this week on Philippine television but her story continues on TFC’s IPTV premium video-on-demand service and via TFC.tv As the most-loved fantasy series “Dyesebel's” final chapter aired on Friday, July 18, on The Filipino Channel's (TFC) satellite and cable services worldwide (July 19 in Australia or Australia Eastern Standard Time [AEST], New Zealand or New Zealand Eastern Standard Time [NZST], and Guam), Kapamilya star Anne Curtis admits that all trials she has faced in ABSCBN’s well-loved fantasy series, ”Dyesebel” made her value her craft as actress even more. “The series taught me to be stronger and made me realize how committed I can be. We continued to work, rain or shine, because that is how much we love what we were doing,” said Curtis. According to the
“Dyesebel” star, all the sacrifices were rewarded with the warm support of the viewers, worldwide. “It is a great honor to hear people call me Dyesebel. you can
all summer long
I
T is so exciting to enjoy the summer now that we can sit outside and soak under the sun. One thing we all need to remember is to stay hydrated. For people who spend a lot of time outdoor working or playing spor ts, it is impor tant to keep hydrated to replenish the energy expended and to stay healthy throughout the day. Aside from water, spor ts drinks and smoothies, there are great foods that can help our body stay hydrated. If you are looking for another way to get hydrated, here are 7 healthy fruits you can indulge in during the summer.
1. Melons: watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew Watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew are refreshing and healthy and will keep you hydrated. Melons contain lycopene, which helps protect your skin from the sun. Lycopene is a good source of vitamins A and C.
2. Berries: strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. Delicious and sweet, berries provide
antioxidant benefits and are very good to mix into your healthy smoothies. Blueberries are my favorite.
Enjoy the summer everyone!!!!
3. Pineapple A tropical fruit that carries a mix ture of vitamins and antioxidants, pineapples also help fight inflammation. For those who train on a daily basis, be sure to add pineapple to your diet.
4. Kiwi Believe it or not, kiwi is packed with lots of vitamin C, more than oranges. Be sure to have them as of ten as you can.
5. Mangoes One of my favorite fruits is mango. It contains vitamins A and C with beta-carotene. It is also very delicious.
6. Oranges Aside from Vitamin C, oranges also have potassium and contains 80% water, which helps with hydration.
7. Papaya Used for ex foliating ingredient for a healthier skin, papayas contain vitamin C which helps fight cold, Vitamin A and E and beta-carotene which helps reduce inflammation in the body.

Ruru Madrid, Ashley Ortega, and Gabrielle Garcia delight audience in My Destiny THERE'S a love triangle brewing in GMA Pinoy TV's My Destiny involving characters portrayed by GMA Artist Center talents Ruru Madrid, Ashley Ortega, and Gabrielle Garcia, making the drama series all the more exciting. Paul Andrada (Ruru Madrid) finds himself rebelling due to his parents' looming separation. More conflicts arise as his girlfriend Nicole Perez (Gabrielle Garcia) and Nicole's best friend Alex Martinez (Ashley Ortega) are dragged in Paul's occasional snafus. The love triangle begins when Nicole falls short as a girlfriend
to Paul, failing to comfort him. Paul then confides to Alex, and they inevitably grow closer to each other. When the cameras are not rolling, it's a completely different story for the three. But if there's one thing they share in common, it's how much they enjoy honing their craft. Ruru Madrid rose to fame in GMA's reality TV series Protégé: The Battle For the Big Artista Break, where he finished as a runner-up. Shortly after, he landed roles in a string of television series, appeared in drama anthologies, and performed in
variety shows, proving that he can sing, dance, and act. "I've learned a lot but I'm still eager to learn more because this is really my passion," shares Ruru. In just two years, Ruru has matured from a shy teenager to a more confident 16-year-old matinee idol gaining followers every day. Ruru's also slated to make hearts swoon together with his love team with Ashley Ortega. Their tandem is fondly called AshRu. "I've worked with Ash before in Dormitoryo and the movie
Bamboo Flowers directed by Direk Maryo J. We develop our friendship every time we get the chance to work together which is why I'm more excited for our team-up to grow," shares Ruru. Ashley echoes the same sentiments. "There's never a dull moment with Ruru. He is fun to be with and he's nice so I was really comfortable with our team-up from the beginning," says Ashley. According to Ashley, her love team with Ruru, or her budding career, in general, is not to be taken for granted. Playing parts in teleseryes entailed her to put some of her passion like figure
skating on hold. However, Ashley is keen to finish her studies. For Gabrielle Garcia, working alongside some of the most loved and respected figures in the industry is an absolute privilege. Being a newcomer, Gabrielle treats every taping day as a chance to learn about the nitty-gritty of acting. "My experience made me a lot better in many ways, from getting to know myself more, to acting and dealing with my co-actors. It made me more committed to be part of acting workshops, and it made me eager and inspired to perfect my craft," says Gabrielle.

Julia Montes credits ‘Ikaw Lamang’ for becoming a better actress
Vhong, Billy, KC, and Richard remain as Kapamilya
JULIA Montes is very thankful to ABSCBN’s master teleserye “Ikaw Lamang” for honing her to become a better actress through the character she portrayed, Mona. “Before ‘Ikaw Lamang’ started, I was so nervous because I didn’t know if I can act side by side with the big stars who are part of the cast. But eventually, I became at ease because they were always generous and were ready to help me give justice to my role,” said Julia. Meanwhile, tension between Samuel (Coco Martin) and Franco (Jake Cuenca) will surely heat up in “Ikaw Lamang” now that Mona is gone. How far will Samuel go to get the justice that his wife deserves? Will he continue to wage war against Franco and Maximo (Ronaldo Valdez) now that the lives of his loved ones are at risk? How will Mona’s death change the lives of Samuel, Franco, and Isabelle (Kim Chiu)? “Ikaw Lamang” is the master teleserye of ABS-CBN which is under the production of Dreamscape Entertainment Television. Don’t miss the heart-pounding scenes in the timeless master teleserye, “Ikaw Lamang” weeknights after “Hawak Kamay” on ABS-CBN Primetime Bida. ANOTHER blessing has come comedian-host Vhong Navarro’s way as he renewed his contract with ABS-CBN. In an interview, Vhong thanked the Kapamilya network and the ‘madlang people’ for giving him courage and support to continue bringing fun to TV viewers. “The love that I receive from the Kapamilya is unconditional. They don’t forget me despite all the challenges I’m facing. They make me feel more loved,” Vhong stated. Vhong’s fellow mainstay in noontime show “It’s Showtime” Billy Crawford also inked a new contract with ABS-CBN. Billy will
horoscope ARIES (March 21-April 19): Will you feel like chat ting today? You bet you will -- and it’s a given that the topic of your choice will be love or romance. In fact, expect one of your new admirers to bridge the gap boldly between friend and lover during what star ts out as a casual chat. If you’re interested, get busy. This oppor tunity won’t last forever. For tunately, at the speed you move, this won’t be a problem.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Still longing for a few hours of time alone with your sweethear t, without the intrusion of a phone or computer? Well, then, take it. Turn off anything that beeps, rings or buzzes, and have an honest-to-goodness conversation. Give yourselves the gif t of uninterrupted privacy tonight. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You’re ready for a whole new level of intimacy with your current par tner. Don’t cut corners. Say it all. Every word. The worst that can happen is that you’ll make it absolutely painful for the two of you to be later on. But then, there’s always tomorrow night -- and the chance to make up for all that lost time. CANCER (June 21-July 22): The urge to take of f for some serious shopping will be tough to resist -- and why should you? Shopping is per fectly justified now. Just try not to go over your limit -- not too far, anyway. The seasons are changing and your wardrobe needs a serious update. If you can af ford it, a few quality staples is just what your look needs. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): It’s all about you today -- and your lover will no doubt prove it to you from the moment you open your eyes. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): That secret you’ve been lugging around? You just can’t keep quiet about it, not for one more second. If it’s going to be a private surprise, though, be discreet, and don’t tell anyone any thing. Disclosing your secret, even to your best friend, could result in a leak of vast propor tions

Unfor tunately, they’re not waiting for an answer, and you’ve got more impor tant things to at tend to. They want to introduce you to a whole new peer group -- to some people they’re sure you’ll fit in with just per fectly. If you can talk them into waiting just two days, it could be a blessing. SCORPIO (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): If anyone is notoriously not fond of at tention, it’s you. In fact, you tend to avoid any thing that even remotely resembles the spotlight. At the moment, that may be tough to do, however, since someone who loves you may be planning a huge surprise. Oh, well. Rela x. You may end up liking it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov.22-Dec.21): You were wondering when someone new and interesting might cross your path -- especially if you’re single. Alas, the universe has seen fit to arrange an encounter for you: A surprising, coincidental encounter. Listen closely, no mat ter where you are, for one of those accents you so dearly love -- the kind that lets you know someone is not from your neck of the woods. Then be brave and introduce yourself. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Calm, cool and calculated -- that’s you, right? Well, that may be what you’re used to being referred to as, but those may not be the adjectives used to describe you today. In fact, you may end up being called fiery, spontaneous and star tling. Why hold back? Just go for it and let everyone see what you’re all about. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): This could be quite the romantic day for you. Oh, and then there’s the fact that the heavens have arranged a full buf fet of sweet, tender energies to assist you in creating not just per fect ambiance, but also the right words to express your emotions. So! Ready to let go and be totally emotional? Ready or not, here comes your chance. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): All that hard work you’ve been doing lately hasn’t gone unnoticed in the eyes of the powers that be. You could be due for a raise, promotion or bonus -- so even if you have plans immediately af terward, dress in your best businesslike out fit for work today. You’re about to have your 15 minutes, and you know you’ve earned it. Feel free to strut your stuf f. And don’t forget to celebrate.

‘Little Superstar’ Lyca is first
‘The Voice Kids’ grand champion
Nine-year-old Lyca Gairanod of Cavite emerged as the first ever grand champion of “The Voice Kids” after garnering the highest percentage of text and online votes during the two-night finale of the top-rating and Twitter-trending singing-reality show. Coach Sarah Geronimo’s bet led the public voting based on the Power Ballad, Upbeat Song, and Special Performance with a Celebrity Guest rounds and took home P1 million, a one-year recording contract with MCA Universal, house and lot, a home appliance showcase, a musical instrument showcase, and P1 million worth of trust fund. Team Sarah’s Darren Espanto came in second, while Team Bamboo’s Juan Karlos Labajo and Team Lea’s Darlene Vibares placed third and fourth, respectively. Lyca impressed the coaches and the audience with her rendition of Regine Velasquez’ “Narito Ako” and Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” Saturday night (July 26), but what brought the house down was her version of “Basang Basa sa Ulan,” which she performed with band Aegis on Sunday (July 27), earning a standing ovation from coaches Lea Salonga, Bamboo, and the audience at Resorts World Manila. Even before “The Voice Kids” started airing, Lyca had already made a mark on netizens and viewers with her blind audition performance of Aegis’ “Halik,” which was used as a teaser for the program and became a viral hit. As she fought through the Battle Rounds, Sing-Offs, and Live Semi-Finals, Lyca was dubbed the “little superstar” after she was likened by coach Lea to Nora Aunor. Lyca, a small kid with big dreams, became known for her heartfelt performances and humble background as a daughter of a fisherman who sometimes helps her mother scavenge junk to sell. Lyca also previously revealed that she would perform for her neighbors in exchange for cash or food. Netizens also tuned in to Sunday show to wait for the announcement of the grand champion, as #TheVoiceKidsChampion, #TVKDarrenForTheChampion, #WowAngGwapoNiLuis, Jhong Hilario, Lani Misalucha, Gary V and JK, You Are My Song, and other finale-related hashtags trended worldwide and locally on Twitter. The star-studded Sunday finale, hosted by Luis Manzano and Alex Gonzaga, also featured performances from Darren and Martin Nievera, Juan Karlos and Gary Valenciano, and Darlene and Lani Misalucha. It was opened by a lively performance from the Final Four young artists, the three coaches, and “The Voice of the Philippines” Season 1 grand winner Mitoy and finalists Klarisse de
Guzman, Myk Perez, and Janice Javier. Since its pilot, “The Voice Kids” has consistently ranked as the most watched program in the country. The first night of its finale last Saturday (July 26) scored an all-time high national TV rating of 37.7% for the program, while the Sunday show hit 37.2%. The “The Voice of the Philippines” Season 2 for adults, meanwhile, is expected to premiere before the year ends. A. Ferrer: Philippine Open Champ By Pepe Perez
IT took one extra hole to determine the 2014 Philippine Open Golf Tournament champion. Aldrin Ferrer's birdie on the first hole at the Kildonan Park Golf course sealed his first win of the primer event of the Filipino golfers in the City of Winnipeg. This is his biggest win considering that he defeated Ab Guanlao, a five-time winner of this championship, the last time in 2011; a two-time City of Winnipeg Municipal Grand Championship winner, and a Kildonan Park Golf Course municipal champion, among his many golf trophies. A giant as far as accomplishment in golf among our kababayans playing the game casually and competitively. The sweeter win it is for Aldrin after a disappointing runner up finish last year and denying another win to a man he has looked up to in all things about golf. Changing of the guards, maybe? Completing the team to represent the Philippines in the Asia Cup Championship to be held at Teulon Golf and Country
Club sometime in August, are: Ab Guanlao; Edwin Esteban; Raul Bulaong; Philip Intac; Joseph Ramos; Tony Villegas; Pepe Perez; Randy Viray and Ray Lozano. This is the team that will be defending the Asia Cup championship after a convincing win at Larter's at St. Andrews Golf Course in 2013. Winners in their respective divisions are: Division B: Ron Urbano, champion; Mike Santos, Pat Manuel, Teng Duarte and Gene Abrenica placing 1st to 4th runner-up respectively. Division C: Doming Canog, champion; Alex Bacomo, Tony Bantados, Jun Raymundo and Rico Villarin. Division D: Rommel Policarpio, champion; Danny Sevilla, Bong Dayao, Othello Rico and Doming Fabian. In its continuing effort to make this championship a truly open competition among the Filipino golfers in the city of Winnipeg and in the province of Manitoba, its organizing committee, headed by Ab Guanlao, wants to thank all those who continually support its effort in the last

Manny Pacquiao’s next fight might not be as easy as he may think. Pacman is set to face Chris Algieri on November 22 in Macau. Algieri has a much lower profile than Pacquiao (565-2, 38 KOs) but is also unbeaten (20-0, 8 KOs). Ron Katz, a veteran boxing matchmaker, says that Algieri has some potential advantages. “I love the matchup. I love the style matchup. I think Chris will use his physical advantages and I think his speed is going to surprise Pacquiao,” said Katz in an interview with Fighthype. com. “I think Manny is still a very good fighter, there is no doubt
about it, but he’s not the same Manny from three years ago.” Algieri certainly has confidence–he recently said that he believes he’ll win, and that after he wins he wants to take on Floyd Mayweather. Meanwhile, Boxing Insider is calling the fight a “lose-lose situation” for Pacquiao, because he’s supposed to win but there probably won’t be big pay-per-view numbers. “At the end of the day, no one envisions Algieri as a serious threat. The ppv may not sell too well,” it said. Zachary Stieber/ Epoch Times

on this issue in a future article. But I raise it now because I know from the workshop that many people from the Philippines will be adversely affected. In more than one case, I had people tell me they would not be able to get their IELTS scores in time for the deadline. One was supposed to get the test results on August 3. The July 31 deadline means that if you do not get your completed application in by that date, then you will have to wait until January of 2015. I am hoping the Government will see the unfairness in setting that deadline and that they need to have some discre-

We also want to thank the volunteers for a job well done. But basketball for us doesn't end there, PBA is busy now preparing for the FBA Intercity Tournament on Labor Day weekend in Windsor Ontario. PBA and WAAY are taking 11 different divisions to this annual event. After winter, our tion in specific cases that need consideration. As I stated previously, I will be writing more on this issue. From Manila I traveled to Davao City to meet with Mayor Rodrigo Duterte with whom I had an interesting hour plus chat. Mayor Duterte is arguably one of the most popular mayors in the Philippines. He has adopted a firm policy of keeping peace and harmony in the city of Davao and that means in good part that he is committed to zero tolerance to criminality. His approach is truly unique and many would suggest controversial, but people flock to support his efforts. He told me first hand "it is the people of Davao that I made a commit-
summer now is more focused on team tryouts and practices and preparing for the big event. We put Winnipeg on the map in FBA and we are always the team to beat and are always ranked top 4 on this tourney. PBA and WAAY League worked really hard to have that respect and now we're preparing for the next competition.
Several fundraising drives are set up to cut down the cost for our athletes. Last month we had a basketball tournament held at Garden City Collegiate and it was well attended. We are also having a Bud Spud and Steak fundraising event sponsored by Councillor Mike Pagtakhan of Point Douglas Ward on August 16 At the Es-
sence in Canad Inn Mcphillips, and the upcoming PBA Golf Tournament at Kildonan Golf Course. We are inviting everyone that plays golf, whether you're just a beginner to come out and support our youths. We are also looking for Hole Sponsors. We'll keep you posted for more development. -Tito MannyA.
ment to and I work for”. Whether it is in Davao, Manila or even Winnipeg, I hear people talking about the popular mayor possibly running for President or Vice-President. Over the years I have met with politicians and bureaucrats at all levels of Philippine government and I intentionally do so to get a better understanding of the different programs that are implemented in their re-
spective areas and their future development plans. By talking with such officials, I encourage a stronger and healthier relationship between two great countries. While in Davao, I spoke before students of the Ateneo de Davao University where I covered a variety of issues relating to corruption, political systems, immigration and more. The impact of the inter-
net is best seen in the students who have considered it as a major source of information, empowering a generation of people to think in a more realistic way about the world as a whole. The driving force behind the future expansion of the middle class and the future prosperity of Philippines will be dependent on education and creating job and business opportunities. Finally, from a tourist perspective, as my daughter said to me, there is so much to see and do and that next time, we should plan on being there longer than seven days. I agree! (www.mpkevin.ca)

competition. The Popcom director, in a talk with some media people, said that Kyle’s birth brings up the point that the country is growing rapidly every year and the national government must meet the demands of a growing population with its limited resources. He clarified, though, that there is “opportunity seen with a growing population but our government is also challenged” to plan for the development of our country. Later, President Noynoy Aquino, in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) said that the poverty incidence in our country dropped this year by three percentage points from 27.9 percent to 24.9 percent. Now, if you ask me, our President really knows something about “timing.” He did “time” his revelation about poverty incidence with the Popcom report about our population gain.
