61-year-old Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines, obligating both parties to come to each other’s defense in cases of external armed attack. “Under the Mutual Defense Treaty, the United States will come to the assistance of the Philippines if our metropolitan territory is attacked or if our Armed Forces are attacked in the Pacific area,” Del Rosario said. Del Rosario cited the preamble and Article 5 of the accord, signed a few years after the end of World War II, when Filipino and American forces fought together. The section defines the scope of an “external armed attack” on a territory or military unit of each of the signatories. This covers areas of economic and social importance, island territories in the Pacific Ocean and armed forces units, public vessels or aircraft in the Pacific. Del Rosario said that the US has identified the contested South China Sea, adapted locally as West Philippine Sea, to
be included in the defensible territories. “In 1999, in a diplomatic letter, the United States affirmed that the South China Sea is considered as part of the Pacific area,” Del Rosario said. On May 24, 1999, then US Ambassador to the Philippines Thomas Hubbard wrote a letter to former Foreign Secretary Domingo Siazon stating that the “US considers the South China Sea to be part of the Pacific area.” Former US Secretary of State Cyrus Vance similarly exchanged a correspondence with then Foreign Secretary Carlos Romulo on January 6, 1979 that an attack on Philippine armed forces, public vessels or aircraft “would not have to occur within the metropolitan territory of the Philippines or island territories under its jurisdiction in the Pacific in order to come within the definition of Pacific area.” Del Rosario also received a reassurance from former US state department chief Hillary Clinton in a meeting in Washington, D.C. that the US “will honor its treaty obligations to the Philippines.” (Philstar)

Barack struggles to get it right MANILA (April 30) - After several mispronunciations, US President Barack Obama finally got his Philippine counterpart’s nickname right, at the state din-
ner in his honor the other night at the Palace. Obama must have been exhausted, as the Philippines was the last leg of his four-nation Asian tour, but the world’s most powerful leader did have his light moments. At the state dinner hosted by Aquino at the Rizal Hall of Malacañang on Monday evening, Obama rose from his seat, clapping spiritedly after three Cabinet secretaries performed his favorite song, “What’s Going
On” by Marvin Gaye. Secretaries Rogelio Singson of Public Works and Highways, Florencio Abad of Budget and Management and Cabinet Secretary Jose Rene Almendras were seen on video uploaded by Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima belting out the song with the help of a band led by Mel Villena. US National Security Adviser Susan Rice sang along, Almendras said, adding that it was his and Aquino’s idea to lighten the evening. Obama and his delegation were treated with good food, and the US president was conferred the Order of Sikatuna as more song and dance from the Madrigal Singers, Leo Valdez, Bituin Escalante, Power Dance, Kuh Ledesma, apl.de.ap and the Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company highlighted the evening. Navy eyes French frigates MANILA (May 1) - Amid territorial disputes in the South China Sea, the government is looking at French frigates for the Philippine Navy’s use. Naval officials were given a tour yesterday of the French Navy’s surveillance frigate Prairial – a 93.5-meter ship with both military and civilian characteristics, making it ideal for multiple purposes including disaster relief and other humanitarian missions, operations against piracy and international drug trafficking, and territorial patrol. The Prairial is one of two French warships deployed in the Pacific – one in Tahiti and the other in New Caledonia. Prairial Commander Frederic Daumas said at a reception on the ship last night that the frigate, with 93 crewmembers, has performed well in various weather conditions including hurricanes since being commissioned in May 1992, and would last many more years. The Prairial is armed with

17.9 percent at the start of the fourth quarter of the year. The unemployment rate, however, worsened to 7.5 percent at the start of 2014, from 7.1 percent in the same month in 2013. Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said the marked reduction in poverty incidence was a reflection of correct and timely strategies. “The remarkable improvement in the poverty incidence in the first half of 2013 is evidence that the Philippines’ development strategies are heading in the direction of inclusive growth,” he said. An information sheet on the frigate states: “Their main duty is to patrol overseas maritime zones over which France implements its sovereignty. In peace time, they enforce navigational police, control fishery and protect trade traffic.” Daumas said his crew would conduct joint exercises with the Philippine Navy tomorrow in Manila Bay before the frigate leaves for Hong Kong. The Prairial, which arrived Monday from Guam for its seventh port call in Manila, is on the fourth month of a seven-month deployment. It will also visit China, Japan and South Korea before returning to Tahiti. Several months ago, the Philippine government considered acquiring coast guard patrol boats from France, but the plan did not push through. Balisacan, director general of the National Economic and Development Authority, said the faster growth of poor households’ income compared with the slower increase of basic commodity prices implies a robust increase in real incomes of the poor, which played a significant role in reducing poverty during the period. The continued implementation of the government’s social programs, such as the conditional cash transfer (CCT), helped improve the welfare of a greater number of poor. Philstar

No salary hike for government workers MANILA (April 30) - Government workers will not get a salary increase this year for lack of budget, President Aquino has said. Two days before meeting with leaders to discuss the issue with them, Aquino yesterday said he needed to be frank with the workers. Aquino said he is no Scrooge, but he could not promise something that cannot be delivered. The President said there are 1.6 million members of the bureaucracy and increasing their salary would entail a huge
amount of money. He said the government has just finished implementing the Salary Standardization Law III that mandated regular increase in the salaries of state workers. Granting another hike may result in deficit, he said. Aquino said a budget deficit could affect the country’s credit ratings and they could not figure out at this time where to get the funds for the pay hike. He blamed some corrupt government agencies for failing to generate revenues that could have provided funds for
programs and projects like the salary increase. “I will say ‘yes’ to you if only to earn brownie points here, but I will not. We can’t raise it now or next month... next year or the year after that,” Aquino said. The President said the administration could not sacrifice social services like education and the conditional cash transfer program just to grant the salary increase. Aquino said funds for the past salary increases of state employees only came from borrowings which, he said, would
not be sustainable. He said he could not promise a sustainable mechanism at this time without identifying the source of funding. He said even the retirees’ pension is increasing and it is hard to balance the budget and address all problems at the same time. The national budget for this year has no provision for the salary increase of state workers, as this would “entail huge money,” according to the Department of Budget and Management (DBM). There have been proposals to enact a Salary Standardiza-
tion Law IV to allow government to project and determine future wage increases. The first version of the SSL was enacted in 1989, the second in 1994, and SSL III in 2009. The fourth and last installment of SSL III was given in 2012. In 2006, state workers received a P1,000 across-theboard wage increase, and a 10-percent increase in 2007 and 2008 before the four-installment SSL III took effect in July 2009. The DBM estimated in 2008 that the full implementation of SSL III would cost P128 billion a year.
POVERTY incidence has dropped to 19.1 percent in the first six months of last year from 22.3 percent in the same period in 2012 amid the country’s economic growth, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
Scorching heat forces Obama to remove jacket MANILA (April 30) - The sweltering heat forced visiting US President Barack Obama to remove his jacket during his speech before military personnel at the Army gym in Fort Bonifacio yesterday. Wearing a white long sleeved shirt with a light blue tie and dark blue pants, Obama entered the venue at around 10 a.m. Obama immediately informed the audience that he would not deliver a long speech because of the sweltering heat inside the gym. “Now, I’m not going to give a long speech, because it’s hot and people are in uniform. I hope you don’t mind me not wearing my jacket,”
Obama said. “And I also want to make sure that I have some time to shake some hands.” Obama was visibly perspiring while he delivered his 10minute speech. Some in the audience were frantically fanned themselves as they listened to Obama, whose speech focused on the longstanding alliance between the Philippines and the US. Obama, however, was still better off than the Secret Service and US embassy personnel, who had to keep their jackets on while their Filipino counterparts stayed cool in their barongs. Members of the media who covered the event were warned
beforehand that it would be hot inside the gym. “Media should wear light, cool clothing. The gym will be very hot. Water will be provided,” a US embassy advisory read. Arriving in Malacañang on Monday afternoon, Obama was given a cold towel, which he used to wipe his face and hands. Heat and sweat notwithstanding, Obama impressed the troops who were present at his visit to Fort Bonifacio. “He removed his jacket and it meant something to soldiers. He was trying to connect to us,” an officer remarked. (Philstar)
Bill raises salaries of president, lawmakers to curb corruption MANILA (April 30) — A senator wants to increase the wages of government employees including elected high-ranking officials to eliminate corruption and to attract competent civil servants. Senator Antonio Trillanes IV has filed Senate Bill No. 1689 or the proposed Salary Standardization Law 4 which aims to make the government compensation system competitive with the private sector. Under the proposed law, the government shall adopt
an omnibus compensation and position classification system for civil servants and military and uniformed personnel. Trillanes said with an improved compensation system, the government will be able to attract, retain and maintain competent employees. The senator also hoped that this will prevent the exodus of professionals, scientists and highly skilled workers who seek better paying jobs abroad, similar to the condition of the Filipino public school teachers,
doctors, and state meteorologists. Trillanes further claimed that the bill also serves as an “anti-corruption” measure. “Due to the competitive compensation package, our public servants will no longer consider resorting to unscrupulous activities in order to augment their meager income, and, instead, focus their efforts and energy to public service, curbing corruption and cutting red tape,” Trillanes said. Take a bow, Josh! HERE to drum up for Penshoppe which he’s endorsing is Josh Bowman, one of the main cast members of the hit ABC suspense TV series Revenge in which he has been playing Daniel Grayson since 2011 opposite Emily Vancamp, said to be his girlfriend who has kept herself away from the local media since the promo is for the clothing line and not for the TV show. Josh, who turned 26 last March 4, was born in Berkshir e, England, and is repor ted to have had a brief relationship with the late singer Amy Winehouse. Josh’s father is Jewish, no wonder he has been quoted as saying that “I feel Jewish,” even if his ancestry is a mix of English, Irish and a bi t of Italian. At 18, Josh suf fered two shoulder dislocations which made him drop a career as a professional rugby player. No regrets. He has found his calling as an actor. He had his acting debut
in 2007 as Dimitri in the T V series Genie ricky in the House, and ap- Lo peared on the Bri tish series Holby City before venturing into movies (13 Hours, Prowl, Ex teriors and Love’s Kitchen). In 2011, he joined the ABC family show Make It or Break It as a gymnast. The same year, Josh was named one of the Stars of Tomorr ow by Screen International. He studied method acting at the Lee Strasberg Insti tute in New York. Funfare did a one-on-one with Josh last Saturday at the Raffles Hotel in Makati City. Is it your first visit here? “No. I was here last year. We went to Palawan which is a magical, magical, magical place. Unbelievable! Probably the nicest place I’ve ever been in my life. We went to Amanpulo. I’m very for tunate, very lucky to have been there. I would love to see more of the country!” You’re wearing a Penshoppe (longsleeved) shirt. Does the brand fit your fashion sense? “You know, I guess I have a preppy sor t of style. It’s sor t of high street, more casual.” What Penshoppe item is your favorite? “The jogger pants. They are slim-fit but not too tight, and great at the bot tom.” Your reaction when Penshoppe offered you to be an endorser? “I was very flat tered. I did a research on the brand before I said yes. The of fer came out of the blue and I guess it’s a testament the show and how well Revenge is being received by the public.” Could you tell us more about Daniel Grayson, your Revenge character? “Well, Daniel has changed since season one.” Change for the bet ter or for worse? “For the bet ter. It’s been a lot of fun since I’m get ting into his shoes now. I feel like I fleshed out the character which is three-dimensional. I like playing the nice guy, the good guy, but it’s much more
fun playing the bad guy. It’s more challenging.” What do you find intriguing about Daniel Grayson? “That’s good question, a very good question.” (Thinks awhile). “I would say that the dynamics he has with his parents, his effor t to live up to their expectations, and his own expectations about himself. I find it most intriguing. But I think every episode is very challenging especially since on television we don’t see what happens until the end and only after we go through the twists and turns of every episode.” How are you similar to and different from Daniel Grayson? “Well, Daniel Grayson is American and I’m English. He’s from a dif ferent world. He definitely has a silver-spoon life.” Like you? “Me?” (Makes swishing sound through his closed lips). “In a lot of ways, no. I can relate to him in cer tain aspects. How dif ferent am I from Daniel Grayson? My decision-making is dif ferent from his which is irrational I would not make the same decisions that he did. I would say that I’m a lot more rational. But I’m impulsive. I’m also very honest and I can relate to him because he’s ver y honest, although not so much now. I would think that I’m more street-smar t than him.” Do you dilly-dally before reaching a decision? “Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If you give me a menu, I take time going through it. Or I just point at any item and say, ‘Go, take it!’ I can be very indecisive.” What would you say is the best decision that you’ve made so far? (Thinks hard) “Probably going to America. It opened up a lot of oppor tunity for me. I really grew up in the last five years. I had to make sacrifices and I think that’s par t of characterbuilding. And, yes, chasing a dream.”

Immigration numbers in Manitoba dropped for the first time!
M
anitoba’s immigration numbers have been fantastic in recent years. New immigrants have contributed significantly to the province’s economy as well as other areas. Ask a real estate agent, or someone who works at a furniture store or a car dealership and you will see how the retail sector has benefited from the influx of immigrants. And that is only one area of development.

O
NLY a handful of journalists drawn from a lot were allowed to ask questions at the joint press conference of President Aquino and US President Barack Obama. And among the few questions asked by a foreign journalist was what the Aquino administration was doing about the high number of media workers being murdered in this country. Aquino said the record “speaks for itself” as he cited the large number of defendants now on trial for the massacre of 58 people, mostly journalists, in Maguindanao in 2009. But this is just one case, and while about 100 people have been arrested and indicted for the massacre, including the accused masterminds, at least another hundred suspects remain at large, with the potential to harass and kill witnesses. The President’s reply also dodged the fact that impunity persists even under his watch because of the failure to catch and punish the perpetrators in most of the attacks on journalists. Earlier this month, a tabloid reporter was gunned down in front of her daughter at their home in Bacoor, Cavite. Before she died, she reportedly identified the police chief of Tanza, Cavite as the one responsible for the attack. The police chief has been relieved, but the case has not been solved, like most of the other murders targeting journalists. The failure to solve the killings has made the Philippines rank behind only Iraq and Somalia in the latest international impunity index. The Philippines is considered by media groups as one of the deadliest countries for journalists, and three years of the daang matuwid administration has failed to erase the tag. This has not escaped the foreign news media. That question fielded by President Aquino should provide impetus for his administration to do more to end the impunity. (Philstar)

Sound immigration policy can contribute to the economic and cultural development of the broader community if it is done right. During the 70s, 80s and 90s, immigration levels helped provinces like Ontario and BC grow while Manitoba’s numbers remained steady. It is fair to say that if it were not for our immigration numbers in the last 10 years, our Province’s population would have decreased. The purpose of my article is to highlight the fact that for the first time in years, Manitoba’s immigration numbers have decreased. In 2012, we received 13,312 immigrants, down from the previous year (2011) where

Straight up A couple of years ago, Manitoba used to have the highest number of nominees coming than any other province. Today, we have lost that spot to Alberta and Saskatchewan has virtually caught up. Ontario, on the other hand, has shown steady growth and wants more. If the trend continues into the future, Manitoba is going to find it more difficult to be able to get as many people to our province through the nominee program. How important is this issue to our province? What does it mean in terms of actual numbers? In 1998 Manitoba received 3,014 immigrants and lamoureux, 21

I have no place to store my crops.’” 18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grains laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ 20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ 21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.” For the past several years, Forbes Magazine has listed Bill Gates, founder and CEO of Microsoft Corporation, as the richest man in the world. How wealthy is Bill Gates? Let me give you a few figures that for someone like me is hard to imagine. Based on Microsoft’s current stock price, he is worth $34.76 billion. Let me illustrate Bill Gates’ wealth. Microsoft went public on March 13, 1986. Since March 13, 1986, Bill Gates’ wealth breaks down to: $2.06 billion a year $169.46 million a month $39.54 million a week $5.65 million a day $235,361.23 an hour $3,922.68 a minute $261.51 every four seconds $65.37 each second To illustrate his wealth another way, imagine an endless line of $1 bills laid end to end.

Since March 13, 1986, Bill has been making money at a compounded interest rate of 35.00% per year. If he can maintain the current 35.00% annual rate of growth, he will achieve trillionaire-hood in 11.19 years, on Jan 16, 2014. The U.S. national debt as of 11/7/2002 was $6.27 Trillion. At this current rate of growth, Bill will be able to pay off the ENTIRE U.S. National Debt on Feb. 27, 2020. According to the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, in fiscal year 2001, the United States Government printed paper currency worth a total of $57.08 billion. Bill’s net worth is 60.89% of that value. In October of 1997, the US Justice Department tried to assess a fine of $1 million per day against Microsoft Corporation for alleged violations of an antitrust agreement. If Mr. Gates were called upon to pay this fine out of his own pocket, he could pay it every day for 34,759.1 days, or 95.16 years. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of the World on 11/7/02 was 6.25 billion. This means that Bill could give $5.55 to every person on the entire planet! And he’d still have $46,231,695 left over for incidentals.
How about you? If your loan from God was called in tonight, could you pay it? Have you ever come to God and been saved? Have you lived for God? Has God been a part of your life? Has he been preeminent in your life? There is coming a day when this life will end and we will meet God. The only thing that will matter then is whether or not we are saved and that we have served God. One final example: if you took Bill Gates’ wealth in dollar bills and laid them end to end, you would go to the moon and back seven times. The Bible tells us that it is possible to be rich and in reality be poor. An example is found in the story that is before us in Luke chapter 12. Here we read of a rich man that was in reality a poor man. In verse 15 Jesus said, “Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he posseseth.” The word “covetousness” is descriptive of a person always having a thirst for more. The Romans had a proverb: “Money is like seawater: the more a man drinks the thirstier he becomes.” A mother saw her two-year old swallow a nickel. She immediately ran over to him and began to beat him on the back. The little boy coughed up two dimes. The terrified mother yelled for her husband. He came running into the room, “What happened,” he asked. She said, “Billy just swallowed a nickel and I hit him and he coughed up two dimes. What should I do?” The dad replied, “Keep feeding him nickels.” I am afraid that many are like that dad; always wanting more. When we look at our text we see that Jesus was instructing us to beware and guard ourselves from becoming covetous. Why? He tells us that life is more than wealth and possessions. Jesus was telling us that a person can have the wealth of a Bill Gates and yet
be living as a pauper. To illustrate His point, beginning in verse 16, Jesus gave us the parable of a certain rich man. I want us to look at the rich man Jesus described and in so doing ask ourselves the question, “What are we living for?” First, let me say just a word about: We read in verse 16, “And he spake a parable unto them, saying, the ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:” It is very obvious that the man Jesus described was one that was successful financially and materially. His wealth no doubted provided a luxurious lifestyle. He probably lived in the nicest of houses, ate the finest food, and wore the finest clothes that money could buy. Anything he wanted was no doubt at his fingertips, and if not, he could buy it. As we look at this rich man we see: We read in verse 16 that his ground brought forth plentifully. The word “plentifully” indicates that his ground was very fertile and that his crops produced abundantly. In fact, his fields and crops did so well, that we find him in verse 17 saying, “I will pull down my barns and build greater.” Things were going so well for him, that he needed bigger barns to store his crops. The second thing I point out about the successfulness of this rich man is: He did so well that we hear him making the statement in verse 19 that he had enough goods laid up to last him for
years. The word “laid” means, “to stretch out.” He had so prospered that he could live off what he made for years to come. He had done so well that he had enough to last for many years. Because he had so prospered, we hear him saying to himself in verse 19, “take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.” He thought to himself, I have done so well that I don’t have to worry about working anymore. I can just retire early and sit back and enjoy the rest of my life. From an earthly point of view this man had done very well for himself. Yet, as Jesus taught us in verse 15, that a man’s life does not consist in how much money he has or what he possesses. We read in verse 20 that Jesus called this successful and prosperous man a fool. Let me be quick to say that Jesus did not call him a fool because he was rich. The Bible never condemns wealth and riches. God never said in His Word that it is a sin to have money. No, what God condemns is the love of money (Cp. 1 Timothy 6:10). It is not a sin to have money. It is a sin when money has us. This was the case of this rich man. There is nothing that seems to indicate or imply this man gained his wealth from anything but from hard work and legitimate means. He plowed his fields, sowed the seed, and worked the crops in such a way that his crops prospered. Furthermore, there was nothing wrong in his retiring early because of the good fortune he had experienced. No, he is not called a fool because he was prosperous. Why was he called a fool? It was because of his selfishness. As you look at this rich man you find that his world was no bigger than himself. His whole life was centered on what he had and the desire to have more. As you read the parable
Luke 12:15-21 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

Angel on ‘Legal Wife’ ratings:
Ayaw ko mag-compare
MANILA (April 30) – While she is grateful for the high ratings of “The Legal Wife,” Angel Locsin stressed that their only goal is to give viewers a relatable story where they can learn lessons about marriage and relationships. According to the latest data from the multinational market research group Kantar Media, Locsin’s series scored 28.2% on April 28. Its competing show aired on GMA-7, “Rhodora X,” only registered 11.3%. “Ayaw ko talagang mag-compare kasi ever since wala kami sa ganun. Kami lang yata ‘yung hindi gumagawa ng gimik para pagusapan,” she told ABS-CBN News’ Ginger Conejero in an interview on Tuesday. “Nakakatuwa na may mga nare-receive kami ng messages kasi parang kahit paano nakakaganti na ‘yung mga legal wife sa mga mistress. May mga nagsasabi naman na at least naiintindihan nila ‘yung side ng mistress tapos ‘yung mga lalaki, hindi na raw manloloko,” she said. Locsin said these kinds of responses only prove that their story telling is ef fective. “Natutuwa lang kami na may ganung klaseng reaction kasi kung walang ganung reaction naman, ibig sabihin walang nanonood, walang dating yung story. Salamat sa ABS-CBN, sa writers talaga. Sila naman ito,” she said. Asked when will she be a “legal wife” in real life, Locsin said in jest, “Liligawan ko pa.” Locsin and TV host Luis Manzano have been vocal about their rekindled relationship. The two got back together years af ter they first separated. Locsin said they feel more secure with each other now that she and Manzano do not want to rush any thing. “Sa akin wala naman akong takot. Pero right now kasi masaya lang k a m i . Hindi naman namin minamadali ang mga bagay-bagay. Okay naman kami, secure naman kami sa isa’t isa,” she said. (abscbnnews) Photo by: Cosmopolitan
horoscope ARIES (March 21-April 19): You’re irresistible, and that is lots of fun -- but it’s not always easy. You might have to juggle a few people who are helpless in the face of your magnetic charms. It doesn’t help that your personal energy is turning up the volume. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Don’t overload yourself, especially if someone close is trying to talk you into making a long-term commitment you’re really just not too sure about. Listen to your feelings -- if they tell you to hold off, there’s almost certainly a good reason for it. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Your social and work calendars are filling up fast, but let’s face it -- you love all the activity and wouldn’t have it any other way. Occasionally, though, something or someone might have to take a hit as one event or another takes precedence. CANCER (June 21-July 22): A major effort is needed from you today, and you might be the go-to person for organizing others as well. If a leadership role doesn’t feel quite right now, get ready for all that to change. You have more resources, inside and out, than anyone realizes, including yourself. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): It’s funny how sometimes people say they believe one thing and then turn around and do the exact opposite. Try not to call them hypocrites today, however. Nobody’s perfect. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You know that life isn’t a battle, but a game, and you don’t let anyone tell you differently. The only trick is knowing the rules of the game.
Bryan lost more than half of initial weight to become
Pinoy Biggest Loser
AFTER losing a total of 154 pounds or 52.56% of his ini tial weight, Bryan Castillo was named the Pinoy Biggest Loser during the final weigh-in of “The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition Doubles” on April 26. From 293 pounds, Bryan now weighs 139 pounds. He recorded the highest weight loss percentage among his co-finalists Kayen Lazaro, Francis Asis, and Osie Nebreja to win P1 million, P100,000 wor th of spor ting goods and accessories, a business franchise package, home appliance showcase, and lifetime gym membership. “Ever y thing that’s happening hasn’t sunk in yet. I’m very happy to get the title. My only wish is to make my family happy. This is what God gave me,” Bryan said. “Now, I’m standing here in front of you with no fears. I won’t look back. I’m looking forward to a bet ter future and a bet ter Br yan,” he added. Bryan was par t of Team Magkapatid wi th his sister Ik ya, who got eliminated during the show’s tenth weigh-in. As a pair, they recorded the highest numbers of wins in the program’s major challenges. Working mom Kayen was hailed as the first runner-up with a weight loss percentage of 50.52% or 145 pounds to weigh 142 from an initial weight of 287 pounds. She brought home P500,000. Bagong Bigateam’s Francis and Osie were declared the second and third runners-up, respectively, with weight loss percentages of 48.85% and 47.5%. Because they made i t to the finale as a pair, they got double the P300,000 and P200,000 cash prizes they were supposed to get. Francis, the season’s youngest contestant, shed 149 pounds to weigh 156 pounds from 305 pounds, while 45-year-old Osie
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Continuing to do things in a certain way because it’s the way they’ve always been done may feel safe and comfortable to you, but it’s not doing much to help you achieve your real goals. Make a serious effort to bust out of your comfort zone. SCORPIO (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): The best thing about the wheel of fortune is that it always turns the right way sooner or later -- so if you’ve just lost big, that means a big win is on the way. Luck is most definitely turning in your direction, so make sure you’ve got your heart’s desire well within your sights. SAGITTARIUS (Nov.22-Dec.21): Someone new might look simply irresistible, but you need to reserve your judgment until you know just a little bit more. Whether the situation is work- or romance-related, now is not the perfect time to dive headfirst until you have a greater sense of their character. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You know deep in your bones that the only way to real success is through practice, practice and more practice. You can see that you need to shape up a bit more today, too. You might ask a perfectly straightforward question only to get a weird non sequitur in reply. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Love, romance, laughter -- you’ve got all the right elements put together, but it might all feel like a house of cards. Make sure you’ve cleared everything with that special someone in your life, or it all could blow over in a strong wind. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Once again, your dreams are trying to tell you something -- both the night and day variety. Listen up! Some big clues to your latest puzzles lie in the realm of your subconscious, so don’t summarily just dismiss them out of hand.

in Macau?
MANILA (April 30) - Juan Manuel Marquez’ chief trainer is not closing the door on a fifth fight between the Mexican warrior and Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao. But Nacho Beristain said if and when it happens he will insist that it takes place outside the United States. Beristain told www.boxingscene.com that the heavy taxes on foreign boxers fighting in the US would recommend that it happens somewhere else. There’s Macau, fast emerging as new gambling capital of the world, and where Pacquiao fought Brandon Rios last November. If Marquez could have his way, he’d like the fight to take place in Mexico. But Pacquiao may insist on a neutral ground, which is Macau.
Beristain is not really pushing a fifth fight between the two arch-rivals but said that if his boxer says “Yes” then he would be there to support him. “I do not like that fight being made, and least of all in the United States. If that fight takes place in America, they would both walk away with far less money,” said Beristain. It’s basically the same reason why Pacquiao tried his hand on Macau, where taxes as far lesser than in the United States, which claims close to 40 percent of the boxer’s earnings. “(T)he US Treasury would take a lot of money. Economically it does not make sense for Juan, at least under the terms they are offering,” said Beristain. “I already explained my position on that encounter. Now if
the promoters convince Juan (to fight Pacquiao), I am there for him,” he told www.boxingscene.com. For their fourth fight in 2012, which ended in a big knockout win by Marquez, Pacquiao was guaranteed $23 million and the Mexican no less than $6 million. Immediately after, a fifth fight was sought, and Marquez was offered $12 million. But he declined, saying there was no point of doing a fifth fight. Marquez ended up fighting Tim Bradley for less, and losing, while Pacquiao ended up beating Rios almost 11 months after his knockout to Marquez. Marquez will certainly ask for more to face Pacquiao one more time, and this time Beristain wants to make the most out of it. (Philstar)
133 Pinoy athletes okayed for 2014 Asian Games
MANILA (April 30) - Team Philippines is sending at least 360 names for accreditation for the 2014 Asian Games but chef de mission Richie Garcia stressed that the number of athletes who will carry the fight in Incheon will only be in the vicinity of 133. The 360, according to Garcia, already includes VIPs and so-called guests of the National Olympic Committee (NOC),
such as government officials. At the same time the National Sports Associations (NSAs) have also endorsed “maximum” rosters that will later be trimmed down. “Let’s not be misguided by the 360 and think that we’re turning our backs on our earlier pronouncement of a lean and mean delegation. Only 133 athletes have been approved by the Asian Games task force (so
far) and more or less it (final roster of athletes) will revolve around that figure,” Garcia said in a briefing. Incheon Asiad organizers have set an April 30 deadline for those who want to be accredited in the Games. “Entry by number” will have to be in by end of May and “entry by name” or the final composition of the delegation should be submitted by Aug. 15.
Let’s make it right! Q: Ben, I received a summons for an unpaid debt that I have ignored for 2 years. How do I go about this problem? A: I have said before that when we ignore problems, they tend to get worse. Let me explain what happened in the last 2 years. When you stopped paying the debt, the creditors tried to reach you by phone and by mail. The next step is to transfer the matter to a collection agency. These collectors are relentless in calling. Next the bank will sell your debt to a debt buyer. They buy it for a low price in hopes that they will collect and make a profit. They will be more aggressive in collecting. Still being ignored, they will contact a collection attorney, who will file a lawsuit. They will send you a letter to re-

in American Hustle, the FBI arranged to have its agents pose as Kambir Abdul Rahman and Yassir Habib, owners of a fictitious company, Abdul Enterprises, interested in investing millions in the United States. The sting originally targeted criminal elements dealing in stolen property, but a forger suggested to the undercover operatives that they could invest in casinos in Atlantic City. According to him, highly-placed politicians could facilitate everything, from permits and licenses to immigration papers, money transfers and other business schemes. . This broadened the operation and subsequently attracted, like the spider tempting the fly, high-ranking figures from Capitol Hill, as well as state and city officials. In the case of Yee, the FBI was originally after Raymond Chow, alias “Shrimp Boy,” who had been successfully leading a double life as a “reformed” criminal doing laudable community work, and as “dragon head” of the Ghee Kung Tong, a criminal organization with ties to Hong Kong. Yee, on the other hand, was considered one of the most successful Asian American public officials in California. Starting out as a member of the San Francisco school board, he went on to become a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervi-

you find him using six personal pronouns and five possessive pronouns. In verse 17 we hear him thinking to himself, “What shall I do,” and saying, “I have no room.” In verse 18 he speaks of what, “This will I do.” In all thinks about and talks about, it is I, me, and mine. It was “my fruits, my barns, my goods,” and “my soul.” His whole life was centered on what he had done, what he had, and what he was going to do.
Why did Jesus call him a fool? It was because he left God out of his life and just lived for material things. Let me repeat, there is nothing wrong with having things. There is nothing wrong in having money. But as Jesus said, a man is a fool that lives just for this world and leaves God out of their life. Yet, for many that is how they live their life. God has no part in their life. They seldom acknowledge God or think of God. They simply have no room in their life for God. There are many who feel like they don’t need God, thus they give Him little thought or time. No doubt this rich man felt much the same way. Yet, I remind you that Jesus called him a fool. A person is foolish if all they live for is themselves and material things, all the while leaving God out of their life. I ask you, what are you living for? Is the most important thing in your life a vocation or occupation? Is it some form
Yee was a politician’s politician and a favorite of the Filipino-American community. He could always be counted on to accept invitations to community receptions and special events. And he always came armed with much-coveted Certificates of Appreciation, bearing the seal of the California State Legislature. In a community hungry for recognition and respect, the certificates were prized decorations on the walls of homes and offices. Not everyone appreciated Yee’s methods. He was known to practice the politician’s favorite sport – arm twisting – to have his way. But he wasn’t simply ampaw – the derisive description used by Noynoy Aquino for public officials who are more air than substance. Yee was a prolific legislator, filing and getting hundreds of meaningful bills passed into law. One of his most significant acts was sponsoring and shepherding the resolution that officially acknowledged October as Filipino-American History Month in California (eventually, Capitol Hill followed suit). Yee was such a likeable fellow that when he was invited to keynote a FilAm festival last December and he saw me and my
of recreation? None of these things are wrong, but a person is foolish if this is what they live for at the expense of leaving God out of their life. There is one more thing that I want you to see in the case of this rich man that explains why it is foolish to live only for self and things, while leaving God out of your life. The rich man had all his plans for the future, but little did he realize that his future was limited to not years or even weeks. It was limited to hours. We read in verse 20, “But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?” I can imagine him standing on the veranda of his big house, looking out over his fields that had brought him such success. As he views his acres and acres of waving gold grain, he thinks to himself, “I’ve done well for myself. I have earned enough to retire early and spend the rest of my life just taking it easy.” But what the rich man did not realize is that before the day was done, death would be knocking on his door. It is very possible that he had kept several appointments through the day, but there was one appointment for which he had not prepared. He had not prepared for his appointment with death and the appointment to meet God. The rich man’s words indi-
son manning a GMA Network promotional table, he merrily joined us in distributing flyers and signing up prospective subscribers to the network. But, as it turned out, like Shrimp Boy, Yee had a Jekyll and Hyde persona. In the shadows, he had been dealing with the triad and trading official favors for campaign contributions. Unknown to him, however, the FBI had already planted an undercover agent with the gang. And Yee got caught in the web. According to an affidavit filed by the FBI, Yee also offered to arrange contacts with people engaged in arms trafficking. Yee allegedly mentioned Muslim rebel groups in the Philippines who could provide high-powered weapons, including shoulder-fired missiles. In late March, after over two years of building up the case against their prey, the FBI conducted simultaneous raids on the home of Yee and his office in Sacramento, the headquarters of the Chinese triad and the homes and offices of over two dozen suspects. Yee was hauled off with his hands in handcuffs behind his back. His office was sealed and his files were carted off, including computers. In short order, a grand jury indicted Yee and the others for corruption and arms trafficking. Could ABSCAM, American Hustle and the arrest of Yee and company happen in our
cate that he felt that he had years to live. He probably had no reason to doubt that he would not live for many more years. No doubt his health was good. He felt good. He had every reason to think he had years left. But in truth he only had hours. Many like this rich man live as if death is some future event far, far away. They know death is coming, but they do not think of it as something that could be hours away. I was recently reading about the number of victims of 9-11. The number of victims of that fateful day is 2, 948 confirmed dead, 26 reported dead, and 25 reported missing. Of that number, 2,629 were World Trade Center victims, which include 319 firefighters, and 50 police officers. Of that number were 87 Flight 11 victims, 59 Flight 77 victims, 40 Flight 93 victims, 59 Flight 175 victims and 125 Pentagon victims. I wonder if any of them walked into the World Trade Center or the Pentagon, or boarded one of those planes thinking today is my last day on the earth. In all probability they did not. If we are honest, we don’t get up in the morning thinking that perhaps today is my last. Yet, the truth is, we do not know if it is not our last on earth. Life is as James described, “a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (James 4:14). There is the brevity of life. Under-
country? Would our authorities ever be able to stage a Pinoy Hustle? For starters, the warrants of arrest would have to go through all kinds of twists, turns and TROs in our convoluted court system, with radio-TV and print reporters and columnists kibitzing. No way can there be the element of surprise. Besides, the Department of Justice and the NBI would feel compelled to call a press conference to announce “the impending arrest of some very important officials.” So, forget about the lightning raids. Sayang kasi ang photo ops. What about raiding the homes and offices of the important officials? Well, they’re not important for nothing. Any agent of the law who tries that on a high-ranking official in our country will suffer a fate worse than being dispatched to Cebu. So, forget about preserving evidence and catching the culprits red-handed. By the time any kind of raid is conducted, all incriminating files and bank accounts will have vanished. But, at least, the raid will be good for a few more photo ops. What about actually arresting the high-ranking culprits and taking them away in handcuffs? Are you kidding? You would have the bishops and the columnists accusing you of inhumane treatment. Besides, the high-ranking culprits would
standing the shortness and uncertainty of life, we must consider: After giving us the parable of the rich man, Jesus said in verse 21, “So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” This rich man had laid up many treasures for himself, but was not rich toward God. When it came to God and eternal things he was spiritually bankrupt. He had not been spiritually prepared or spiritually productive. Everything but God had been important in his life. He had planned for many things in life but had not prepared for eternity. I find it interesting the word that Jesus used when he said, “This night thy soul shall be required of thee.” The word “required” was a banker’s term. It means to call in a loan. The life of the rich man was a gift from God. His success and prosperity was a gift from God. All that he had had come from God. It was all a loan from God. Now it was time to call in the loan and he had nothing to pay it with. How about you? If your loan from God was called in tonight, could you pay it? Have you ever come to God and been saved? Have you lived for God? Has God been a part of your life? Has he been preeminent in your life? There is coming a day when this life will end and we will meet God. The only thing that will matter then is whether or not we are saved and that we have served God.
all suddenly suffer a cardiac arrest and would be consigned to the private ward of an exclusive hospital. Well, okay, some lesser lights would probably be locked up in jail. But then, you can expect influential congressmen or governors “inquiring” about the legality of the arrest, and top dogs of the Philippine National Police and justices of the Court of Appeals and even higher-ups in the Department of Interior & Local Government getting into the act. And, oh yes, the arresting officers – yes, the ones who nab the lesser lights – will likely be promoted to a provincial post, away from the perks of Metro Manila. But what about the very important government officials, the ones whose “impending arrest” the Department of Justice has announced? Wellllll…..first of all, the presidential spokesman will most likely announce that the president “still has confidence” in the officials and if they wish to resign, that would be entirely up to them, but the palace “prefers to maintain a hands-off policy and to let justice take its proper course.” Now, if you really want to know how justice takes its proper course, ask the Czech ambassador to the Philippines. sors, then won a seat as a State Assemblyman and, finally, as a State Senator. But he was terming out in the Senate and needed a new position. So he decided to run for Secretary of State.
that was the year when we took on the responsibility to attract provincial nominee candidates. It is important to recognize that during the 80s and 90s our numbers were not much higher than 3,500 immigrants a year. In 2011, Manitoba received 15,963 immigrants, a vast majority of whom came through the nominee program. Let there be no doubt that when former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien created the nominee program back in the late 90s, Manitoba more than any other province has benefited from it. We should note that former Premier Gary Filmon was quick to sign a provincial nominee agreement with Ottawa in the 90s that led us to where we are today. Manitoba’s success has resulted in other provinces becoming more proactive in developing their own nominee programs. It is going to become critically important that Manitoba create a better working relationship with Ottawa on the issue of how many certificates we can have into the future, and what is the overall number of immigrants we can receive under the program. Manitoba like the rest of Canada needs immigration. The issue is how many and what type of immigrants (family, economic). If we get the right number and the right mix, everyone benefits. For our province, the Government of Canada needs to understand how important the nominee program can potentially be to Manitoba’s future growth and prosperity. (www.mpkevin.ca)
