Santiago reacted positively after constitutionalist Fr. Joaquin Bernas said on television that President Aquino should no longer seek a second term and “give Miriam naman a chance.” Although sidelined by her ailment, Santiago said that she would run for president in 2016, if there were enough “like-minded” supporters such as Bernas. Bernas was a member of the 1986 Constitutional Commission that wrote the 1987 Constitution, which gives the president a single term of six years. Santiago announced yesterday that she has started to overcome her lung cancer, which was diagnosed last June.

“I have licked cancer, and I’m actually thinking of several career options,” she said in a statement. She also outlined her life options as she reported being cured of the “Big C.” “By 2016, I will be disqualified by law to seek another term as senator. At present, my life projects include participation in the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) based in Rome, or writing books on foreign policy at the Wilson Center in Washington, DC,” she said. Last June, Santiago was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer by oncologists led by Ronald Natale and Gary Loren

China building harbor on reef MANILA - Military aerial reconnaissance has shown that the Chinese are building an artificial islet on Mabini (Johnson South) Reef in the West Philippine Sea. The reef’s rock and sand formation have been replaced with an apple-shaped white sandy islet on which several structures have been built. A blue building in the middle, with fully grown palm trees dotting the front lawn, is prominent from the air. China’s reclamation of Mabini Reef has shifted to “greening” – in which grown trees are replanted, including coconut and palm trees. “The reef is gone as the area is now becoming green with grown up trees including fruit-bearing coconuts,” a senior security official said. The trees are believed to have been uprooted from China and replanted on the artificial islet. Several fruit-bearing coconut trees were also planted near the concrete breaker to protect the artificial structure from the waves. Fishermen told The STAR that Mabini Reef now looks more like an island than a reef because of the trees. On the north side near the concrete seawall are two smaller structures that are believed to be barracks for Chinese construction workers. On the left of the blue building is a newly built road leading

to the reclamation area where China is building a pier. Last month, fishermen on their way home from a fishing trip saw a concrete seawall being built on the western side of Mabini Reef. Recently, they were surprised to see a variety of plants, including coconut and palm trees, lining the area. Heavy cranes mounted on three ships with huge booms are being used in the construction. Inland, construction mate-

rials, along with heavy equipment like backhoes, heavy cranes, dump trucks, cement mixers, concrete slabs as well as mounds of gravel and sand and steel scaffoldings are also visible from the air. China is also claiming at least three other reefs within the Philippines’ 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone. It has expanded maritime activities in Recto Bank near the northern part of Palawan and in Hasa-Hasa (Half-Moon)

Shoal, only 60 nautical miles from Palawan. It has deployed on a 24/7 basis coast guard vessels around Ayungin Shoal, an area close to Recto Bank and in Panganiban (Mischief) Reef where it has already established a forward naval facility. Ayungin Shoal also serves as gateway to Pag-Asa Island, the second biggest island and seat of Kalayaan Island municipality. A confidential report submitted to Malacañang showed that

China is also reclaiming four other reefs, all located within the country’s EEZ. These are Calderon (Cuarteron), McKennan (Hughes), Burgos (Gaven) and Malvar (Eldad) reefs. China has de facto control of Panganiban (Mischief), Subi and Kagitingan (Fiery Cross) reefs. China has dismissed as without basis the Philippine diplomatic protest against the reclamation projects. MANILA (Aug. 28) Malacañang is confident President Aquino will survive the impeachment complaints against him without having to move his allies in the House of Representatives to junk the three cases that were found sufficient in form. “We certainly do not agree with the allegations in the three impeachment complaints. However, there is a process in the House, and that’s a process dictated by the Constitution, so we respect the process,” presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in a press briefing yesterday. “As to ‘worried’? We’re not concerned about the impeachment complaint proceedings right now, although it is a very important proceeding in the House. What we’re more concerned with is really how to address all the concerns of the country that affect our countrymen,” he said. Two impeachment complaints filed against Aquino

Palace: Impeach cases won’t prosper

MANILA (Aug. 28) - President Benigno Aquino III on Thursday said he is not interested in pursuing a second term even if he is open to amending the 1987 Constitution. In an interview with Bombo Radyo, the President confirmed he is consulting people about the Charter change proposal but clarified that he does not want to stay longer in Malacanang. "Ako ba nag-aambisyong pahabain..." he said when asked about the possibility of term extension. He also admitted that he is consulting with people on how best to ensure that the reforms he instituted while in government would be permanent. "Sa ngayon nag-kokonsulta tayo sa ibang sector - paano natin masisigurado na...lahat ng naumpisahan natin ay talagang permanente,'' he said. Aquino earlier fueled speculation about the possible lifting of term limits during an interview with TV5. Under the 1987 Constitution, the President is limited to a single term of six years. In the Bombo Radyo interview, the President said his interest in Charter change is to impose limits on the alleged overreach of the judiciary. He said while the Supreme Court was "indifferent" during the martial law regime of President Marcos, it now seems to be over-checking the executive, making it hard for him to run the government.

Former Senator Manny Villar jumped to 14th place with a net worth of $1.46 billion, up $410 million from a year ago. His wealth is derived from his real estate company (Vista Land) and shopping mall business (StarMalls). Also given special mention was the tandem of Tan Caktiong and Mang Inasal founder Edgar "Injap" Sia, who formed DoubleDragon Properties. Sia ranked 31st on the richest list with a net wealth of $390 million. The Forbes list included four newcomers on the list, namely Ricardo S. Po and family of canned food company, Century Pacific Group (No. 21, $770 million); Dean Lao, co-founder of D&L Industries (No. 26, $625 million); Raul and Jose Concepcion and family, who are behind Concepcion Industrial and RFM Corporation (No. 34, $320 million); and pawnshop titan P.J. Lhuillier of Cebuana Lhuillier, (No. 49, $180 million). However, the new Forbes rich list did not include PLDT chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan and education baroness Lourdes Montinola. Forbes said the minimum amount required to make this year's list was $170 million, up from $105 million last year. The list was compiled using shareholding and financial information obtained from the families and individuals, stock exchanges, analysts and other sources. Net worths are based on stock prices and exchange rates as of close of markets on August 18. Mar: PNP is undermanned MANILA (Aug. 28) - The Philippine National Police (PNP) is undermanned. Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Mar Roxas, whose office supervises the PNP, confirmed this during the budget presentation of his agency in Congress on Wednesday. Roxas said not all the positions in the PNP that were budgeted have been filled up. Gabriela Party-list Representative Luz Ilagan noted that in the past two to three years, only 4,218 out of 4,971 authorized positions were filled up and only 16,503 out of 19,886 positions for uniformed personnel were filled up. "What are the reasons these positions have not been filled up? What happens to the funds when they are not used?" Ilagan asked Roxas. Roxas explained, "Unfilled positions and budgets for the filling up of these positions aren't with DILG or its agencies. They are with the MPBF (miscellaneous personnel benefits fund). Until such time a position is filled up, money stays with treasury and released by DBM (Department of Budget and Management)."

The third complaint was in connection with the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) between the Philippines and the United States. “When we say confident, then there’s assumption… there’s this implication that we’re moving heaven and earth to do that. The PNP has authorized 10,000 additional policemen for 2014 and another 20,000 for 2015. Roxas said some 30,000 policemen are deployed for internal security operations. When asked about crimes perpetrated by gunmen riding in motorcycles, Roxas said: "Riding in tandem is a means of escape but the criminal act is perpetuated by the same gangs or culprits. One of the efforts is Operation Lambat which seeks to accost motorcycles without license plates, registration. Several thousands have been impounded." He also added that more checkpoints have been deployed. "In NCR (National Capital Region), from 38 checkpoints, this is now 104." People were entitled to their own opinions, he said. “But, the greater Filipino people, a majority of the Filipino people, are with us in the ‘straight path.’ So we believe that the President has not done any impeachable offense,” Lacierda said. The DAP is still pending before the SC because the government has filed a motion for reconsideration. The President and his officials have defended the mechanism, saying it accelerated the implementation of programs and projects listed in the budget by using savings. The EDCA was signed to increase the rotational presence of American forces in the Philippines in line with the Visiting Forces Agreement and the Mutual Defense Treaty. Philstar

Chiz proposes

to heart Two Saturdays ago on national television, Dingdong Dantes fell on his knees and, buckling a bit, proposed to Marian Rivera on her eponymous dance show on GMA 7 and slipped into her dainty finger a Harry Winston ring. It was Dingdong’s way of formalizing the proposal, this time witnessed by both his and Marian’s families, after the first which was done at the Butterfly Dome in Macau in 2012 during a sweethearts’ holiday. They have set their wedding for Dec. 30 at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Cubao, Quezon City, where the Danteses usually hear Mass on Sundays, the church being a stone’s throw from their home.

Chiz proposes to Heart with heart-shaped heirloom ring.

Last Saturday, the same romantic scene was enacted, this time with Sen. Chiz Escudero on his knees, his eyes fixed on his girlfriend Hear t Evangelista’s tear-drenched face as he slipped into her finger a heart-shaped ring said to be a family heirloom that came from Chiz’s mother, Elvie Escudero, who, together with Chiz’s twin kids Quino and Chesi, were around to give Chiz moral suppor t. The twins are Chiz’s children with ex-wife Tintin Flores who is happy with her new love who is a member of a popular dance group. Their marriage was annulled by both the state and the church. As in the case of Dingdong and Marian, Chiz’s proposal was long overdue, done not on national television but at the Escuderos’ house in Sorsogon and witnessed not by the whole world but, aside from Chiz’s mom and kids and his sister and her kids, only by the lovers’ close friends including Alessandra de Rossi and sweethear ts Lovi Poe and Rocco Nacino. Hear t’s father (whom she last saw during his recent bir thday) sent her this message: Hi Hear t. Congratulations. Heard the news and I just wanted to wish you well. It seems like yesterday when you were just a lit tle girl. Now you are all grown up, on your own and engaged. As a father, I wish you all the happiness, love and blessings in the world. Hear t said that she would have loved to hear the proposal at the foot of Eif fel Tower during their recent ex tended vacation in Paris, but Chiz failed her — for a reason. Unknown to Heart, Chiz in connivance with Heart’s close friends have been planning the proposal for months and found a good timing last Saturday. “Chiz and Hear t flew to Sorsogon last Thursday for a vacation with Chiz’s folks since i t was a long weekend,” said somebody privy to the “secret plan.” On Friday, without Hear t’s knowledge, some of her friends star ted arriving in Sorsogon. Alessandra, Lovi with Rocco and some of Chiz’s friends from Manila arrived on Saturday. “The proposal happened at 8 o’clock Saturday night,” continued the eyewitness. “Hear t thought that it was a simple, regular dinner at the Escudero home. Then, music star ted playing and one of Heart’s friends from Manila led her to the dining area where Chiz and company were waiting. “Lovi and Rocco appeared, followed by Alessandra. Chiz walked in with his family led by his mom. As Chiz read the message from Hear t’s dad, Hear t melted in tears. Chiz told his son Quino to take out the heirloom ring. Chiz held it before Hear t and fell on his knees, asking Hear t, ‘Will you marry me?’ Of course, Heart said, ‘Yes!’” That signaled the lighting of a fireworks display that lit up the Sorsogon skies, coupled with the well-wishers’ cheering that reverberated beyond the walls of the house where Chiz grew up.

few nights ago, I saw a documentary on art history that probed the mystery of prehistoric cave paintings. I'm always intrigued by the presumed circumstances that impelled our ancestors to "create" art, from tales of hunting to ritualized celebrations of a divine power. Theatre seems to have had a similar evolution. From dramatized storytelling to mythology, ritual was the thread that facilitated meaningful connection. Less intra-personal but more collaborative in nature, theatre is an expression with a dual function: a device to empower our existence, and a conduit for bridging alternate realities. Whatever the medium, artists are a rare breed, always have been. Those operating from the margins have been called "temperamental," a convenient and superficial descriptor for misunderstood talent. I choose to think of it as a byproduct of non-linear thinking. If art is the language of the soul, artists must occasionally deviate from conventional logic. After all, treading the unconscious is no cake walk. History is graced with a slew

ncredulity tends to greet any announcement by the Philippine National Police of a lower crime rate. The disbelief is reinforced by reports of police officials being relieved of their commands for fudging crime statistics.

That the police officials who fudged crime figures were relieved, however, should minimize doubts when the PNP reports a drop of 15.63 percent in the volume of recorded crimes in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2013. The PNP attributed the drop from 410,665 to 346,469 crime incidents nationwide to measures implemented to increase police visibility, intensify the campaign against loose firearms and generally improve law enforcement. The improvements were of no use to Orlando Navarro, station manager of dwIZ News Radio in Dagupan City, Pangasinan. On his way home early yesterday, he was shot and wounded in the back as he got out of a tricycle. The lone gunman is at large and the case could go the way of many attacks on journalists: unsolved. The PNP also claimed an increase in crime solution from 26.77 percent in the first half of 2013 to 36.15 percent for the same period this year. The PNP may have to explain what it means when it declares a case solved. A crime is solved when the perpetrators are convicted and sent to prison. Solution does not mean filing charges without making arrests, or indicting fall guys, or filing a case and then causing its dismissal for repeated failure of the police officials involved to appear in court. It’s good to hear the PNP reporting that crime incidence is down. This should be as good in reality as it is on paper. Philstar

Lower crime rate

Foreigners are complaining of a spike in violent crime, with South Korean officials telling the PNP that kidnapping, armed robbery and killings targeting their citizens were starting to turn away Korean tourists and investors. A recent report also said carjacking cases were on the rise. It is not clear how this jibes with the PNP claim of a lower crime incidence.

The path to maturity Athletes and musicians know they must exercise and practice to improve.

Rev. Ruel Calitis Camia

Developing skills requires continual repetition: playing a song, throwing pitches, shooting baskets. Athletes run, lift weights, and practice hour after hour in order to grow strong and develop endurance. Illustration: A man once had an apartment next to a professional cello player. He thought it must be exciting to play in an orchestra. Then he listened as the man practiced the scales, exercises, and songs endlessly. Children practice skills over and over to learn them. Children learning to walk try again and again. They are proud to learn a new word, then they use it till they drive you crazy! They want to play the same thing over and over: play the same tape recording, put the clothes on a doll. Parents encourage children to repeat what they must learn: drill math facts, spelling, reading, piano. They get tired, but we encourage them because that's how they learn. "Practice makes perfect" - or at least it promotes improvement. B. Exercise and practice are essential to spiritual growth. Hebrews 5:14 - Those who are of full age, by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Growth requires exercise as well as nourishment. 1 Timothy 4:7 - Exercise yourself toward godliness. Like children, athletes, and musicians, we must work again and again at applying Bible principles to become effective

n www.angperyodiko.ca

Shout Out in the Lord's work. To learn to TEACH, we must do it repeatedly: teach your children, home studies, Bible classes, preach sermons, again and again. To learn to LEAD SINGING, practice songs at home, sing with your family, lead during church meetings over and over. To understand the BIBLE, study it again and again, talk to others, drill yourself, memorize. Get in and dig. To learn to PRAY, do it over and over. Kids may not be good at activities at first, but parents encourage them to do it over and over. Likewise, older members must encourage the newer ones to use their talents. They may not be skilled at first, but they learn by doing. We need to encourage teachers, preachers, and song leaders. Don't complain. Surely don't stay home. They need the practice! IV. TIME AND PATIENCE By definition, growth requires TIME. It is progress and development as time passes. Several important lessons follow: A. Don't expect to reach your goal overnight

At birth they are so small you can hold them in a little basket. Soon they are outgrowing new clothes every month. Eventually they can wear their parents' clothes or even larger. But it takes time. Sometimes children become impatient. "I can't wait till I'm 18 (or 21)." We say, "Take your time. It will come soon enough." Time passes and, sure enough, what they were waiting for has come and gone, and they're looking back wondering how the time passed so fast! Likewise spiritually, do not expect maturity overnight. James 1:4 - To become perfect and mature (entire), lacking nothing, we must have patience. Some new-born Christians want to know everything and do everything right away. They may not be willing to take the TIME to STUDY and DEVELOP ability. Yet they want to be just like the mature members - and want other members to treat them with the same respect that they do mature members - before they have taken time to grow. Sometimes older members are impatient with new members. We don't understand why new converts have trouble with some basic concepts. Then sometimes these new members explain, "I never was really taught what the BIBLE said before." They have no background in the Scriptures, and it takes TIME to grow. Remember that people who may be mature today did not get that way overnight. It took

And new converts will not become mature overnight. It will take time.

* Peter denied Jesus three times.

New members should not get discouraged and give up. Older members should not be impatient or overly demanding. Remember how our children took time to grow, and how we had to show patience with their immature ways as they grew. But growth will come as long as people are trying and we give them time.

* Thomas doubted Jesus' resurrection.

B. Don't become discouraged by mistakes and rebukes. Children make many mistakes and must often be told they are wrong. How often does a child fall while learning to walk? They fall again and again, gathering bumps and bruises. They spill their milk, don't hold their spoon properly, fall off their bikes, and come to bat in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run in scoring position and strike out. Parents are continually correcting, instructing, and punishing, till we almost feel sorry for the kids. Growing up is tough! If kids are going to become mature, they have to keep going in spite of mistakes and rebukes. And someday they will look back on their own childish mistakes and just smile. Likewise, new converts will make many mistakes and must often be told they are wrong. Some of the greatest Bible characters committed terrible errors and had to be rebuked. * Moses made excuses when God called him to lead Israel out

* Paul persecuted Christians before his conversion.

* All the apostles forsook Jesus when He was arrested and crucified. Matthew 16:21-23 - Shortly after he had confessed Jesus and been highly praised (v1518), Peter contradicted Jesus and was severely rebuked. Yet all of these are remembered as some of God's greatest servants. Great servants are not people who live without ever sinning, but people who learn from their mistakes and go on to serve God faithfully. Judas betrayed Jesus and is remembered as a traitor. Peter denied Jesus three times and is remembered as a great apostle. What is the difference? Judas, after betraying Jesus, hung himself. Peter, after denying Jesus, repented and went to work preaching the gospel. Proverbs 29:1 - A person is destroyed, not simply because he errs, but because he becomes stubborn when he is rebuked and will not repent. What is needed is repentance and patience to learn to do right. It is no shame to be a baby, if you were born a few months ago. But if a person has been a child of God for several years and has not grown, he has a problem. Everyone needs to grow as a Christian, and everyone can grow, if he/she simply applies the Bible principles of growth.

Catholics warned about ice bucket challenge

MANILA – The head of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines has a reminder to those taking the ice bucket challenge, which supports research efforts of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association (ALSA). CBCP president LingayenDagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas said research on ALS involves the use of stem cells. "ALS is a degenerative disorder and stem-cells apparently hold out the promise of reversing the death and degeneration of brain cells, in particular," Villegas said in a statement. "Stem cells however are most readily harvested from embryos, and it is in this regard that this type of research is ethically problematic." Citing the "Instruction on Respect for Human Life in Its Origin and on the Dignity of Procreation," Villegas noted that "human embryos obtained in vitro are human beings and subjects with rights." ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord, which eventually leads to paralysis. Villegas said the ALS Association said in a statement that "most stem-cell research in ALS is currently focused on iPS (induced pluripotent stem) cells, which are not burdened with ethical issues." "We are told that iPS cells

are 'induced pluripotent stem cells', stem cells created from skin cells. Such cells would indeed be pluripotent, but would not be embryonic cells," the CBCP chief said. "As such, the ethical objection to the use of embryonic cells, whether harvested from embryos, or obtained through in vitro fertilization, would not arise." The prelate, however, noted that the ALS Association also admitted that "iPS cells are used in 'most stem-cell research.'" This, he said, "leaves open the possibility that stem cells from objectionable sources are still used!" Villegas said it would be premature to say that the ALS Association is involved in the "unethical practice" of using embryonic cells. He said while ALS research is important, "we must also guide the Catholic faithful, and all who heed the ethical teaching of the Church." The CBCP chief urged those participating in the ALS ice bucket challenge "to make a clear and unequivocal declaration that their donation is made on condition that none of it is to be applied to research that involves the use of embryonic stem cells, in vivo or in vitro." "Catholics who participate in the challenge and who make donations to this research must also demand of fund-raisers and organizers an assurance that none of the donations made will

be applied to researches that are ethically reproved," he added. Villegas said the church will support research on ALS and other debilitating diseases as long as they are kept within the "confines of the ethical de-

mands of human dignity." The ALS ice bucket challenge has gone viral in the last few weeks. Anyone nominated to do the ice bucket challenge has to do it within 24 hours or donate to the ALS Association.

The ALS Association has raised $94.3 million as of August 27, as the ice bucket challenge has been taken up by celebrities, political and business figures all over the world. ABS-CBNnews.com

Bea on onscreen catfights with Maricar: “It’s fun!” For Kapamilya actress Bea Alonzo, her onscreen confrontation scenes with Maricar Reyes in ABS-CBN’s top-rating primetime drama series, “Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon,” are actually fun. “Maricar and I always have fun whenever our characters Sasha and Rose clash and fight each other,” said Bea, who recently renewed her two-year contract with the Kapamilya network. “I enjoy doing our catfights because these are the things that we don't do in real life. It is challenging for us to make our rift very realistic onscreen for the viewers,” said Bea as she described their roles. They've become hot topics in social networking sites. Unlike the rivalry of their characters in “Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon,” Bea said she has a good relationship off-cam with Maricar and her leading man Paulo Avelino, who plays the role of Patrick, the love interest of Rose and Sasha. “Maricar, Paulo, and I are always having a good time, laughing on the set. I’ve become closer to them because of our soap,” she said. Meanwhile, “Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon” will make the nights of TV viewers more thrilling now that Rose has vowed to bring down everyone who ruined

her life. How will Rose get her revenge against Sasha and Patrick when Rose still has feelings for her husband? Will she succeed in finding the culprit behind the deaths of Emmanuelle and her father? Under the production of Dreamscape Entertainment Television, “Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon” is a story about two different women fighting for justice. It is directed by Trina Dayrit and Jerome Pobocan. Don’t miss the continuation of Rose and Emmanuelle’s story in “Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon” weeknights after “Ikaw Lamang” on ABS-CBN Primetime Bida. The Importance of

Strength Training for Women

T

The comments I hear, “I don’t want to do weights because I don’t want to get bulky.” Well ladies, you will not bulk up because the high amount of estrogen in the body will not allow a woman to be overly muscular. Well, if you haven’t added weight training to your fitness routine, you are missing out. Here are the awesome benefits of strength training: 1. Increases strength 2. Strengthens your neck and shoulders 3. Improves posture and decreases neck pain 4. Reduces chances of osteoporosis or slows down its ef fect 5. Decreases belly fat 6. Helps you breathe easily 7. Kapuso Soul Diva Jaya reunites with dad in Vancouver

Jaya and her dad Rey Kagahastian (photo from her Instagram page)

As thousands of FilipinoCanadians flocked to the Plaza of Nations in Vancouver to see Jaya perform at the third Vancouver OPM Festival, two special guests drove 13 hours from Edmonton, Alberta just to see the Kapuso Soul Diva. They were Rey Kagahastian, Jaya’s father whom she had not seen in almost 20 years, and Joshua Kagahastian, her halfbrother whom she met for the first time. “My father left when I was three years old, I think,” Jaya recalls. “But I can remember seeing him again in 1980 when he met up with me in Fiesta Carnival in Cubao.” “That was also the day he bought me my first pair of eyeglasses,” Jaya fondly remembers of that meeting. Rey, who now resides in Canada, last saw his daughter in 1997 when she was on tour

with Asia’s Queen of Songs Pilita Corrales. The opportunity for their long-awaited reunion came when the Kapuso singer, who is currently a main host of GMA’s variety program, Sunday All-Stars, headlined the Vancouver OPM Festival last July, which was organized by GMA Pinoy TV in partnership with the Filipino Canadian Marketing Group, Inc. “My father and I talked about everything,” she shares. “From how he met my mother, to the time I was conceived and why he left. We talked about our future together.” Meeting her half-brother

was also a special moment for Jaya and she was grateful for the opportunity to visit Canada, through the efforts of GMA Pinoy TV, which led to this significant milestone. “I felt so happy and blessed to have had a chance to get to know him even for a short time,” she says. “I can’t wait to spend more time with him so I can get to know him further.” Going beyond giving her kababayans abroad a taste of home through a night of original Pilipino music, Jaya’s trip to Vancouver proved to be a memorable one as she herself was able to find a sense of home in reuniting with her family.

horoscope ARIES (March 21-April 19): Who’s in control here — you, or someone further up the chain of command? Be honest with yourself and use your wisdom rather than your ego when going about your duties. Share your responsibilities and you’ll get the added benefit of some fun companionship as well as easing your load. Right now, charm will serve you better than toughness. As you relax and pay attention to the people around you, the truth of a situation will become clear. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Hard work yields pleasing results and proves that momentum is the key to your success. Once you get going, you may find yourself exceeding expectations long before you’re ready to quit. This is a great time to start a new health program or an art project. Once you get underway, people around you are bound to take notice. Share your new plans with friends or family; they will provide you with useful help and suggestions. Take the time to rest up and build your enthusiasm, then don’t let anything stop you! GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Duty calls repeatedly today, while you just want to answer the siren song of fun and games. Your day improves when you find a playmate who shares your desire to escape. The secret to success is to follow your impulses creatively: Do a routine chore slightly differently, or wear something special to make your day perk up. A little rebellion is a good thing. You are in charge of entertaining yourself. Luckily, you’re really good at it. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Be on the lookout for obstacles in business and romantic partnerships. Excess activity on ofttraveled ground stirs up many issues. Be cautious about starting something new — you may want to wait until people feel as if they’re back on their feet. Be careful in dealings with your colleagues and loved ones, and take some time off if feelings run high. Try to figure out your own priorities and be understanding of the needs of others. Remember to keep calm in negotiations and do not be afraid of compromise; it may be the best way for everyone to come out a winner. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): It’s a great time to meet and impress new people. You radiate confidence, attracting potential partners like flies to honey. In love and art, you are nearly unstoppable. Use your magic touch to bargain for something you’ve been wanting on or to ask a question you’ve been avoiding. Even though everyone pays attention to you, don’t overextend yourself. You could say anything right now and people would believe you, but it might help if you mean it.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Have you heard the saying, ‘To make money, you have to spend money’? If you want to get in the game, you must come up with the admission fee. At least this money will be helping you toward a greater goal. Buy the things you need to get what you want or to send you where you want to go. Your purchases will be noted, and your investments will have far-reaching effects on those around you. Be optimistic, but don’t throw common sense out the window. In fact, mixing business with pleasure may be a very real possibility. Throughout the day you have the delicious feeling that approving eyes are watching every move you make. Enjoy the attention while it lasts! Tonight is the perfect time to impress someone who has been aloof in the past. SCORPIO (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Your train of smooth and steady progress gets derailed by indecision. It may be difficult to make a choice when you consider how much is at stake. GMA Network records P5.766 billion recurring revenues in H1 2014 Broadcast giant GMA Network (GMA) reported first semester revenues of P5.766 billion from recurring advertisements, a 4 percent decrease over the same period last year. Election-related placements from the midterm elections, which boosted earnings in 2013, continued to play a factor as the Network’s consolidated revenues for the first half of 2014 fell 14 percent. GMA News TV, the country’s number one news channel, and GMA International, which manages and operates the global distribution of the Network’s three overseas channels – GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Life TV and GMA News TV International – lessened the drop in revenues as both platforms posted positive growth trends. Total operating expenses went down 4 percent to P4.907 billion, mostly from the reduction in production costs equivalent to 5 percent in between periods. EBITDA settled at P1.566 billion, down 32 percent versus 2013, while net income reached P580 million or P555 million less than last year. Despite lower revenues in the first six months, GMA management remains confident that the Company will still hit its yearend target. “We have regained momentum as far as both our nationwide TV ratings and financials are concerned. We are optimistic that the third quarter will be a turning point for the company,” said GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon.

Business Developments

GMA International posted positive growth over the previous year. By the end of first half of 2014, flagship international channel GMA Pinoy

TV grew its subscriber base by 8 percent. GMA Life TV also increased its reach by 20 percent, while GMA News TV International remains the top performer in terms of subscriber growth, posting an increase of 894 percent over the same period in 2013. Wholly-owned subsidiary GMA Worldwide, meanwhile, has sold P37.5 million worth of locally made programs amounting to 1,930 hours to various countries such as Brunei, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, South Korea, Vietnam, the US, Nigeria, and Uganda. Meanwhile, the Kapuso teleserye My Husband’s Lover, which tackled homosexuality on primetime TV, continued to make waves with the increasing sales of its lead actors Tom Rodriguez and Dennis Trillo’s album dubbed TomDen under GMA Records. The album scored a Platinum Record Award from its sales of over 16,000 units from October 12, 2013 to May 21, 2014. The IM Ready mobile app, an offshoot of the IM Ready public safety portal, was likewise well received by the public as it became the number one app among (free) News applications in both Apple App Store and Google Play in July. The app is a product of the collaborative efforts between GMA New Media and GMA News and Public Affairs.

TV Ratings

GMA sustained its TV ratings leadership in Urban Luzon and Mega Manila based on data from Nielsen TV Audience Measurement in the second quarter. GMA led in Urban Luzon, which accounts for 77 percent of the total urban TV households in the country, with a 35.5 percent total

day household audience share, up 2.8 points from ABS-CBN’s 32.7 percent and up 24.2 points from TV5’s 11.3 percent. The Network also continued to score top ratings in its bailiwick Mega Manila, which represents 60 percent of the country’s urban TV household population, with a 37 per-

cent total day household audience share. ABS-CBN trailed GMA by 6.8 points with 30.2 percent while TV5 was behind GMA by 24.7 points with 12.3 percent. Partial 3Q ratings (July 1 to August 9, 2014 with the dates of August 3 to 9 based on overnight readings) showed GMA closing in on ABS-CBN

in nationwide ratings, reducing the latter’s lead to a mere 0.2 percent.

Awards and Recognition

In July, GMA was recognized as one of the topperforming listed companies in the country based on the ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard (ACGS) country reports

and assessments for 2013 to 2014. This is the second year in a row that GMA was included in the list. GMA also continued to add to its string of awards, bagging top honors from various award-giving bodies such as the US International Film and Video Festival, Communicator Awards, Asia Rainbow TV Awards, among others.

Pacquiao wants to hire Artest as KIA import MANILA – Filipino boxer and now KIA Motors playing coach Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao wants to hire former NBA player Ron Artest – now known as Metta World Peace – as his team's import in the PBA. Pacquiao, who was taken by KIA with the 11th pick in the recent PBA Draft, told Abac Cordero of the Philippine Star while in China that he is thinking of tabbing Artest as their reinforcement for future conferences. "Okay 'yun, kaibigan ko 'yun," Pacquiao said of Artest, who is a former NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Artest also won a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2010 but is now playing in the Chinese Basketball Association. The burly 6-foot-7 forward has a reputation for eccentricity as well. "Kailangan namin ng magaling na im-

port," Pacquiao also said, adding that he knows that Artest now plays in China. "Pag nakuha namin 'yun, maganda 'yun. NBA player 'yun. Kilala ko 'yun," he added. Before even thinking about hiring Artest, however, Pacquiao has to first deal with the All-Filipino Conference as the new PBA season begins on October 19. Aside from Pacquiao, the KIA Sorentos' roster also features Rene Pacquiao – the boxer's cousin – as well as players like Reil Cervantes, Paul Sanga, Jai Reyes, Hans Thiele, Alvin Padilla, LA Revilla, and Joshua Webb. Pacquiao is currently in the midst of a media tour to promote his November 23 welterweight title defense against American boxer Chris Algieri. ABS-CBNnews.com

Asiad body set to disqualify Blatche, Dillinger, Norwood? MANILA (Aug. 28) - The Philippine Olympic Committee has received a letter from the Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee (IAGOC) questioning the eligibility of naturalized player Andray Blatche and Fil-Am players Gabe Norwood and Jared Dillinger for the coming Asian Games in Incheon, Korea. The IAGOC communiqué is inquiring whether the three have met the Asiad three-year residency rule for the quadrennial meet with all three submitting new Philippine passports.

This may put in danger Blatche’s supposed stint in the games since his naturalization was passed by the Philippine legislature and Malacañang only this year. There may be no problem in the cases of Norwood and Dillinger who have long been residents of the country. And both have represented the country in FIBA Asia meets. Questions on Blatche’s eligibility have long been the topic of discussion, but Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes was confident the NBA veteran would be cleared to play.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas believed such rule applied only to naturalized players who have previously represented another country in overseas competition. However, POC and PSC officials said they have been advised by a top official of the Olympic Council of Asia that Blatche is not eligible. “I met with an OCA official, the first time we sat down, OK (siya na makalaro si Blatche) kasi may Philippine passport na,” said PSC chairman Richie Garcia as quoted by Spin.ph. Batang Gilas outplays Kazakhstan to stay in hunt for 5th

MANILA – After losing a chance to claim a berth in the 2015 FIBA Under-19 World Championships, Batang Gilas nevertheless stayed alive for a fifth place finish in the 2014 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship after beating Kazakhstan, 86-74. Batang Gilas lost a heartbreaker to Chinese Taipei, 90-86, on Wednesday to end their run for a place in the FIBA U-19 worlds. The loss also

relegated them to the classification phase. Against Kazakhstan, five players scored in double-digits for the Philippines, led by Paul Desiderio with 19 points. Radge Tonco had 13 markers, while Jolo Go, Kobe Paras, and Mark Dyke each scored 10 points. Batang Gilas was able to take an early lead and had a 54-38 advantage at halftime, though Kazakhstan was able to make a

run in the third quarter. The Filipino youngsters were able to keep the Kazakhs away, however, and advanced to a showdown for fifth place against Japan today. Four players finished in double-digits for Kazakhstan against the Philippines, led by Alexandr Danilchenko with 18 points and nine rebounds. Ruslan Aytkali had a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards. ABS-CBNnews.com

cisms being levied against the program such as it being used as some sort of “backdoor” route to family reunification, or that it is an unnecessary program, fair? I don’t believe so. The LCP is unique in that caregivers who are brought to Canada through the program are eligible for permanent resident status. Temporary foreign workers on the other hand, cannot apply for permanent resident status and follow a different schedule in terms of how long they are eligible to remain in Canada and seek employment. Knowing the differences between the LCP and programs like the Temporary Foreign Worker Program are important in understanding why permanent resident status is offered to those who come in through the LCP. One of the main and necessary requirements for an individual to qualify as a livein caregiver, is that they must physically reside with their employer for 24 months. It is after working and residing in Canada for 24 months that live in caregivers then become eligible for permanent residency. A few months ago the government criticized the program

as mutating into a family reunification program. However, to be eligible to come to Canada as a live-in caregiver, a Canadian family must first prove that they are in need of live-in care. Over the years, thousands of applications have been approved by the government through the LCP. In 2010, there were 7,664 principal applicants who came to Canada as a live in caregiver. In 2011, there were 7,664, and in 2012, there were 5,033 approved applicants. These numbers suggest a few things; first, since thousands of applications to the program are approved each year, the need for live-in care is real. Based on these numbers alone, there should be no question that families in Canada are having difficulties finding individuals to provide live-in care and as a result, we must seek out assistance through the program. Secondly, the government has approved of these thousands of applications. So, not only is there a consistent need from Canadian families, but there should be no question on the legitimacy of the live-in caregivers considering they have gone through a government process where they ultimately became approved. They say numbers don’t lie and I’m inclined to

agree that the LCP fulfills a legitimate need here in Canada. So as the Conservative Government seems to want to make changes to the program their focus appears to be on changes that will just make it more difficult to qualify as a candidate for the program. I believe the greater need is to improve the program in order to facilitate better and timelier processing

of people in the program today. If the Minister only listened and acted on what John and I heard back on August 27, we would have a better program. My suggestion to the minister is to spend time on improving the program from a live-in caregiver perspective and not just focus on those who might be abusing the program. www.mpkevin.ca

a product of beauty. When someone asks me how and when I chose to be an artist, it's difficult to string the right words together. It's like asking which day a kitten becomes a cat. There is no specific day or milestone for maturation. The creative process is a continuum, it's ethereal and it haunts every one of us. The question is how open we are to the haunting. It's like falling in love; it brings up the best and the worst of temperments. It's part of my make-up to discern how modern society reflects ancient history. If primitive artists accessed divine inspiration to create sophisticated works sans technology, I have to believe it's a gift available for the ages. Once again, like falling in love, I believe it takes a certain trance to achieve the seemingly impossible.
