MANILA (Dec. 15) - The Port Congestion Multi-sectoral Working Group (PC-MWG) on Friday said Santa Claus might not be able come to the Philippines this Christmas due to the high volume of undelivered cargo clogging the Port of Manila. In a press conference in Makati, Fernando Peña of the Management Association of the Philippines said measures like lifting a ban on trucks on Roxas Boulevard are needed to ease congestion and to allow the timely delivery of goods and balikbayan boxes. Peña said they are seeking a moratorium on the truck ban as
it is worsening congestion at the port, especially with the holiday import surge. He added that by “moratorium,” they do not mean “cease or suspend the law” but “let’s sit down and talk before you implement this law.” Peña said the “moratorium” was needed to review all the new laws and “implement this one by one in proper order.” A total truck ban was implemented starting on Dec. 3 along the eight-lane Roxas Boulevard that connects Manila to Pasay and Parañaque. The holiday truck ban aims to ease traffic along Roxas Boulevard especially during the

Drugs, hot tub, Playstation seized inside Bilibid prison MANILA (Dec. 15) - Some 100 operatives from various law enforcement agencies swooped down on the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) Monday morning and discovered illegal drugs and some home items, including a hot tub, inside the maximum security compound of the prison. Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, accompanied by elements of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and Philippine National Police (PNP), held a surprise inspection at the national penitentiary’s maximum security compound amid reports that convicted drug lords are still able to continue with their operations inside jail. Government authorities seized suspected shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) from convicted drug lord Peter Co in his room at the maximum security compound. Authorities also discovered a storage area, secret pathway, entertainment appliances, and even a sauna facility inside his room. They also seized papers containing a list of names with corresponding cash amounts from Co, suggesting that the
convicted drug lord is still able to hold illegal operations behind bars. In the room of robbery group leader Herbert Colangco, authorities found cash and music equipment. Colangco told dzMM’s Alex Calda that the cash seized from him were supposed to be used for a feeding program. NBI and PNP Special Action Force operatives said among the numerous entertainment items seized were a 48-inch flat screen television and a PlayStation 4 unit. A hot tub, sex doll, cash and shabu, meanwhile, were seized from the room of Jojo Baligad, a dismissed US Army serviceman who was jailed for drug trafficking. ABS-CBN News reporter Henry Omaga-Diaz said De Lima was surprised that the items were smuggled inside the NBP. He quoted the DOJ secretary as saying that heads will roll following this latest discovery. De Lima said at least 19 convicted and influential drug lords will be transferred to another detention cell. Their visiting privileges have also been suspended. The surprise inspection came
after de Lima signed the implementing rules and regulations of Republic Act No. 10575 or the The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Modernization Law. In an earlier inspection, the BuCor confiscated contraband items in the high-profile cells inside NBP. Dozens of signal boosters
and jammers as well as Wi-Fi antennas were some of the contraband items seized by the BuCor in the search operations. In a series of investigative reports aired by ABS-CBN News in mid-November, sources said the hi-tech devices were being used by influential inmates to boost cellphone signals and
conduct illegal activities in and out of Bilibid. Some of the devices were confiscated from high-profile inmates earlier named by sources as inmates who run drug, gambling, and other illicit operations inside the maximum security compound. abs-cbnnews

MIAA starts probe on video of airport cop smashing cab MANILA, Philippines — The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) on Sunday started an investigation on a video apparently showing an airport police officer smashing the window of a taxicab. In a statement issued on Sunday, the MIAA said that the heated argument occurred between taxi driver Boots Ymata and arresting officer APO2 Alejandro Pineda Jr., which was caught on video and posted on Facebook over the weekend. Pineda is seen demanding Ymata’s driver license for violating several traffic rules around the Ninoy Aquino International
Airport (NAIA) last December 12. The MIAA said that Pineda accused Ymata of disregarding traffic signs, obstruction, direct assault and resisting arrest. “MIAA is now determining liability of arresting officer in this incident,” the agency said. In the video apparently taken by passengers at the NAIA Terminal 3 departure area, Pineda is seen breaking the driver’s side window of the vehicle while Ymata is still in his seat. “Alam mo ba kung anong kaso mo? Ano ba ang kaso mo?” Pineda was caught as saying in the footage. Philstar
‘PH is still a notch underrated’ MANILA - Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima believes the Philippines is still a notch underrated even after the credit rating upgrade given by Moody’s Investors Service last week. Moody’s upgraded the Philippines’ credit rating to Baa2 from the minimum investment grad rating of Baa3, and gave it a stable outlook. Moody’s said the key drivers for the upgrade are the country’s ongoing debt reduction, aided by improvements in fiscal management; continued favorable prospects for strong economic growth; and limited vulnerability to the common risks currently affecting emerging markets. Purisima welcomed the credit ratings upgrade, saying it was a recognition of the Aquino administration’s good governance reforms and prudent fiscal management. “Four years down this road, we are growing ever firmer in our conviction that good
governance is indeed good economics: this is the 21st positive credit rating action that the country has earned since the Aquino administration took office in 2010,” he said. However, Purisima admitted there is still work to do. “We believe the Philippines is still a notch underrated. There is much work to accomplish as we approach 2016: we look to comprehensive and equitable tax reform to align with our peers in ASEAN, enhancements in tax administration, the expansion of the Treasury Single Account, as well as the passage of our priority initiatives pending in Congress such as customs modernization, as well as the rationalization and transparency of fiscal incentives,” he said. In October 2013, Moody’s raised the Philippines’ credit rating to Baa3 from Ba1. It was the last major credit rating agency to given the Philippines an investment grade rating. abs-cbnnews

9-hour working limit for PUV drivers sought in Congress MANILA, Philippines - A lawmaker has proposed to limit the working hours of public utility drivers in an effort to lessen road accidents.
ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Samuel Pagdilao Jr. authored House Bill 5271 “An Act providing daily driving limits for trucks, buses and other public utility
vehicles.” Under the bill, the driving limit for each day or within a 24-hour period should be nine hours. Daily driving hours may be extended to 10 hours not more than twice a week. The proposed measure covers trucks, buses and other motor vehicles classifies as public utility vehicles. “In other countries, daily driving hours are specifically limited as a safety measure against fatigue-related accident. In the United States, the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration mandates a maximum daily driving limit of 10 to 11 hours. In Europe, drivers observe a daily driving limit of 9 to 10 hours only,” Pagdilao said. Pagdilao noted that driver fatigue is one of the leading causes of potentially fatal road accidents in the country. To make his point, Pagdilao cited the case of a bus driver who allegedly fell asleep and wrecked a parked police car along EDSA in Quezon City. “The bus driver claims that he was extremely tired and exhausted for driving 24 hours when the accident occurred, injuring four policemen on duty,” Pagdilao said. The bill provides that drivers shall have a mandatory uninterrupted break of at least 30 minutes after driving continuously for four and a half hours. The break would not be included in the computation of the daily driving limit. Drivers will have to record their duty status, which includes the following: date, name of driver, motor vehicle license plate, name of operator/owner/company, 24-hour period starting time, total kilometers driving today, total hours driving and signature of driver. Binay: No to Bongbong as running mate MANILA (Dec. 15) - VicePresident Jejomar Binay on Monday said he is not considering Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. as a running mate in the 2016 polls but said a Binay-Grace Poe tandem is still a possibility. In an interview, Binay said Marcos is not on his list of possible running mates for a very simple reason. “Ayaw kong mag-sinungaling. Hindi ho ‘yon kasama sa mga kino-consider namin. Kasi, unang-una na, malaki ang tsansa na si Senator Bong Bong ay magkakandidato ulit bilang senador,” he said. He also said he is beginning to accept the possibility that businessman Manny Pangilinan is not interested in his offer to become a running mate. He said Pangilinan has not yet responded to his invitation but noted that the businessman “is still being considered.” On the other hand, the vicepresident said there is still a possibility that Poe, daughter of the late showbiz icon Fernando Poe Jr., could become his running mate in the 2016 polls. “Posible po ‘yon. Ang sinasabi ko naman palagi ‘pag ako tinatanong, una, tiyak na ako ay magkakaroon ng vice president. Pangalawa, napakaaga pa naman ho para mag-deklara kung sino ang vice president ko. Kailangan pa po ng masusing pag-aaral. Una, mapapapayag ba? Pangalawa, panahon na ba para mag-deklara ng kung sinong Vice President?” he said.
Binay noted that he served as campaign manager during the older Poe’s presidential campaign and was with the actor on the night of December 11, 2004 when the latter had a stroke. He said Poe invited close friends to a Christmas party at his production studio when he had a stroke. “Um-attend po ako ng party n’ya ro’n sa studio n’ya. E ngayon, no’n ko lang napuntahan ‘yong studio na ‘yon. ‘Yon pala, ‘yon pala e pa-party para sa malalapit n’yang kaibigan,” he said. “Naalala ko pa nga kami noong mamatay ‘yon. Na-stroke ‘yon. Magkakatabi kami sa lamesa. Kaya sinakay ko pa sa kotse namin. Dinala ko sa ospital. ‘Yong pagkamatay n’ya, e lagi naman akong nakikiramay kasi gano’n naman ako magdala ng kaibigan e. ‘Di naman do’n sa pakitaan lang,” he added. Binay said he is still bent on running for President even if the younger Poe turns down his invitation. He said that on the practical side, “many candidates want to be my vice-president.” “E ‘yong hindi ko na mapipili, ginawa ko nang kalaban ‘yon,” he said. He also said he is ready for the possibility that he will be pitted against Poe in the 2016 polls. A Pulse Asia survey earlier showed Poe ranked 2nd behind Binay on possible presidential candidates who could win if
Grace Poe mum on 2016 plans MANILA (Dec. 15) - Sen. Grace Poe, a reluctant favorite in the next presidential race, played coy yesterday on whether she would run in the 2016 elections. Poe only echoed the statements of President Aquino and his allies that the “anointed one” should be able to continue the current administration’s reforms and anti-corruption campaign. Asked if she would be the running mate of Vice President Jejomar Binay who has expressed intention to run for president, Poe was non-committal. “Right now, I’m not considering any particular commitment except that I think that whatever the President has started, whoever will be the candidate, should be able to continue that,” Poe said in an interview at the Manila North Cemetery. Poe and her mother, actress Susan Roces, yesterday led the family and followers of the National Artist for film Fernando
Grace Poe Poe Jr. at the cemetery to commemorate her father’s passing 10 years ago. Binay was among the personalities who attended the simple ceremonies for the late actor. Asked what her father would have advised her regarding running for higher office if he were alive today, Poe expressed belief that he would always want her to be sincere and prepared in whatever endeavor she would pursue.-Philstar
elections were held today. Poe earlier said she has no definite plans yet for the 2016 presidential elections, amid reports that she is being eyed as Binay’s running mate. In an interview on radio DZMM, Poe said she has yet to receive a formal offer from pos-
sible presidential candidates. “Siyempre nagpapasalamat ako sa tiwala, palagi naman ‘yan ang sinasabi ko, nakikita nila siguro yung potensyal, o yung aking maaaring maiambag, pero lahat naman po ng kanilang sinasabi sa media, hindi naman po talagang diret-
sahang nakikipagusap sa akin, o nagkikita kami tungkol sa paksa na ‘yan, wala naman po. Kaya kapag tinatanong ako, pareho lang ang sagot ko, wala naman akong pinaplano, at wala naman talagang pormal na nakikipag-usap tungkol diyan,” she said. abs-cbnnews

Ordoñez acknowledged that the truck ban was done with good intentions but said there is a need to open Roxas Boulevard to trucks during the holidays. He added that too many new policies have been implemented at the same time which seemed to have worsened the port congestion problem instead of easing it. “Too much of a good thing can also be bad,” he commented. Peña supported this statement by lauding the government’s “stop smuggling campaign,” the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board’s (LTFRB) policy on setting a 15-year age limit for trucks, and others. However, he said a more concerted effort from the government is needed because some policies, such as the LTFRB ruling on truck age, hae worsened the situation at the Port of Manila. Peña said the LTFRB regulation keeps 70 percent of roadworthy trucks off roads, hindering the flow of goods, and dampening the Philippine economy.

According to information provided by the PCMWG, out of some estimated 6,000 trucks that use the port daily, about 2,000 pass through Roxas Boulevard. Rina Papa of the Alliance of Concerned Truck Owners and Organizations (ACTOO) said the closure of Roxas Boulevard is forcing trucks to reroute to narrower streets, causing a delay of four to five hours in delivery time. In late November, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada declared a four-day holiday during the papal visit. The former president explained that the city government has to ensure the security of Pope Francis when he visits the Manila Cathedral, the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park, the University of Santo Tomas and the residence of the Papal Nuncio in Manila. “We are ready to secure Pope Francis. The security preparations for him are coordinated efforts between the local and national level. We have been closely coordinating with both the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the military,” Estrada said. “We also have to secure the devotees who will sleep or stay in vigil during the pope’s visit,” he added.– With Rudy Santos
MANILA (Dec. 15) - With only two weeks before the celebration of the New Year, six cities in Metro Manila, Northern Luzon and Mindanao have banned the use of firecrackers, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) reported yesterday. BFP officer-in-charge Chief Superintendent Ariel Barayuga said the cities of Muntinlupa, Baguio, Olongapo, Davao, Kidapawan and Zamboanga have banned the use of firecrackers. He said an area in Pateros, the only town in Metro Manila, also imposed a firecracker ban, citing the Dec. 6 report of Senior Superintendent Igmedio Bondoc Jr., director of the BFPFire Safety and Prevention. The BFP reminded the public of the risks posed by firecrackers following an accident in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya last Wednesday, wherein four people were injured when firecrackers stored in a house exploded while the victims were attending a wake at a nearby house. Investigators said 16 types of firecrackers stored for over four years in the adjacent house exploded. The blast ripped the roofs and walls of the two houses and even damaged the coffin of the deceased in the funeral wake.
In last year’s revelry, authorities said 413 persons were confirmed hurt, with one of the victims a seven-year-old girl who was hit in the head by a stray bullet. The figure represented a 17-percent drop in injuries related to the New Year revelry, according to health officials, but it was still too high. Meanwhile, the BFP recorded more fires during the first 10
months of 2014 compared to the same period last year. Barayuga said the BFP tallied 13,991 fires – structural and bush fires – from January to October 2014 compared to only 12,301 incidents in 2013 and
only 8,798 cases in 2012. The BFP reported 1,225 deaths, including that of six firefighters, from 2009 to 2013, most of which were recorded last year.

ANILA, Philippines - Dingdong Dantes can’t wait to be married and the preparations for the altar date on Dec. 30 are almost
“We’re getting there except for a few loose ends,” said Dingdong during a presscon for his Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles. The 34-year-old Kapuso star also confirmed that he’s shouldering everything, including bride-to-be Marian Rivera’s church gown by the Dubai-based Filipino designer Michael Cinco. Dingdong explained, “My thinking is, that day is really for her, our families, but it’s really more for her. I want it as a gift for her, so dapat lang naman talaga (that I’m taking care of the expenses).” Asked how long he has been saving up for this wedding, he said, “When you say you’re saving up, parang you’re putting a limitation to it. Sabihin na nating kung nangyari ito, 12 years ago, kung ano man ang meron ako, I would give everything as long as I’d be able to exhaust everything to make her happy, parang naging relative na lang kung gaano ka rami or ka mahal ang pupwedeng maibigay para mapasaya s’ya. But the truth is, yung mga simpleng bagay lang naman talaga yun lang ang mahalaga, at lahat ng elementong yun are already there in the coming wedding.” He is also grateful that there are people “who are helping us in so many ways.” As for the wedding gifts, Dingdong reiterated the couple’s desire that guests donate instead the gifts to his Yes Pinoy Foundation. The foundation, which has been mostly focused on youth-related outreach projects, is also in line with his job as commissioner-at-large for the National Youth Commission (NYC). With his NYC appointment, can a political career be far behind? Interestingly, the actor has been included in surveys about possible senatorial contenders for the May 2016 national elections. “I just laughed at it,” he said of his reaction to the Pulse Asia survey conducted in September where he got a voting percentage of 11.1, and ranked at No. 28 to 30. “If you ask me right now, I really don’t have any plans,” he said, evasive on questions if he’s being courted by political groups. “For now, my concentration is to build my family be-
cause in 2015 we mean to have a baby — that’s the plan.” Right after his wedding, he and Marian will be away for less than a month only for their honeymoon (reportedly courtesy of their ninang Dr. Vicki Belo) and Dingdong said that they’re thinking of flying to Europe, particularly south of Italy, which is known to be one of the most romantic destinations in the world. Afterwards, it’s back to the grind with Dingdong set to start work on the comebacking artista reality search StarStruck, and Marian in another teleserye. If ever they will have a child, Marian (who has said that she wants to give Dingdong as many kids as he wants, to which Dingdong reacted, “Likewise!”) will have to slow down. “It (slowing down) depends on the circumstances, for example if we will be blessed with a baby. (But) marriage doesn’t mean, it’s the end or start of slowing down when it comes to your job or career as an actor, all the more you will love your job because you’re doing it now for a family, a wife or a husband.” Philstar

Year-round, the focus should be on family Editorial
Back on December 3, the minister happened to be there for a debate that we were having on proxy marriages and it was my turn to speak. I took the opportunity to raise one of the most common concerns that is brought to my office. Addressing the Minister, I stated: “My challenge to the government and in particular to this member is to look at trying to assist people and to facilitate their being together after marriage in a much more timely fashion.” I provided the minister an example of a gentleman who has been appealing to me for months for help. As I stated in the chamber, this man was married in January 2013 and began the process of sponsoring his wife a couple of months later. He will be celebrating his

If he wants to be with his wife on that special day, he will have to arrange for a couple of weeks off from work and pay $1,500.00 for a plane ticket. We are in the holiday season when there is a special focus on family and friends as people dream, plan and think about the future. And this man is here in Winnipeg, depressed and wanting to have his wife here as well so his family life could take off. I find this very upsetting. When you realize it, he is not alone. Straight up they are a part of a serious problem and it must be fixed. Sadly, the problem over the past couple of years has been getting even worse. This stream of immigration must be fixed. It is completely inexcusable to be treating newly married couples in this manner and I will not let up in criticizing non action on this issue. Oftentimes when I write stories, I will point out problems and be somewhat critical but I also give credit when it is warranted. For instance, on that day in the same speech, I said: “I appreciate the Minister

Let Christmas become your story
Most of us are pretty comfortable with the Christmas story. Maybe we’re so familiar that it’s become part fable and part legend in our minds. Some have sentimentalized it so much that they skim along on a superficial level, counting down the remaining shopping days, stressing about all the things to do, while neglecting the Nativity. It reminds me of the little girl who misquoted John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only forgotten Son.” The shepherds received news about the gift that still goes on. And because of what they did with this gift, we too can sing joy to the world! I find it very interesting that God chose to

and we are compared to sheep, which is anything but a compliment. By the time we come to the first century however, shepherding has lost its luster. Shepherds made up the lowest class of people, coming in just ahead of the lepers. In the Talmud, which is a collection of interpretations and insight from the rabbis, we read these words: “No help is to be given to heathen or shepherds.” God entrusted the greatest message ever sent from heaven to a bunch of smelly shepherds.

A
province notorious for a massacre and poll fraud should be grateful for the few brave souls willing to plunk in substantial amounts to set up job-generating enterprises. About two years ago the Delinanas Development Corp., a subsidiary of food giant Del Monte Fresh Produce Philippines, opened a 550hectare banana plantation in Maguindanao. Delinanas aimed to harvest about two million boxes of Cavendish bananas for export annually, with the plantation providing jobs to over a thousand people. Elated officials of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao urged Delinanas to look at other plantation sites in the ARMM.
Living Hope
A
survey was done to see which characters from the advent account most people identify with. How many of you think its Mary? Joseph? The wise men? Anyone for Herod? Not surprisingly, the shepherds came out on top by far.
The cost of lawlessness
Instead of expansion, however, the company may shut down its Maguindanao operations for good. Work at the plantation in Datu Abdullah Sangki town has been suspended since gunmen ambushed a convoy of company officials three weeks ago, wounding the chief security officer. A week later, masked men toting assault rifles cut down hundreds of banana trees in the plantation. Last week ARMM officials were reportedly notified of the company’s plans to pull out of the province. The violence is being attributed to a clan feud laced with politics – a problem common in much of the conflict areas of Mindanao. Last July, another Delinanas banana plantation in Tulunan town, North Cotabato was also attacked by gunmen who torched two backhoes. Probers said the attack was part of an extortion attempt by a bandit group. Some of the country’s poorest provinces are in Mindanao – the result of centuries of neglect, weak governance and deadly clan or tribal feuds. Jobs and livelihood opportunities along with improved public education and health care can ease poverty. With inadequate infrastructure, the few major investments in the conflict areas are mainly in agriculture. If the government wants to attract more investors, it must show that it can provide protection to the few who have dared to set up shop. The experience of Delinanas can only be bad news for the ARMM and Mindanao. Philstar

n all the discussions on the effect of ASEAN integration on business and agriculture, most people, including myself, have overlooked the effect of this integration on the professional services. The Philippines agreed to integrate, with other ASEAN countries, the following professions: Accountancy, Civil Engineering, Geodetic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engi Qneering, Mining Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Environmental (Urban ) Planning, Computer related professions, and Interior Designing. The Philippines also entered into mutual recognition agreements on medical and dental professions. Supreme Court Justice Arturo D. Brion, a week ago, gave a speech before the officers and members of the Philippine Association of Law Schools. He brought up the intriguing question of whether the Congress or the Supreme Court “can by rule or decision, determine whether, to what extent, and under what terms foreign (ASEAN) lawyers can engage in the practice of the legal profession in the Philippines.” His answer was: “It only remains for us to determine, how, when and to what extent we shall open up the practice of the legal profession to foreign participation.” Brion’s most important query was whether

Even without the ASEAN integration, his analysis and recommendations, on the Philippine legal education, should be taken seriously as a major step for the improvement in the judicial system which we have long been advocating as necessary to institutionalizing the rule of law in this country. Here two paragraphs, in his speech, that graphically describes the state of legal education in this country: “Numerically, perhaps, we may currently have enough law schools to fill our needs, In 2013, 120 law schools sent 5,292 bar examinees to the BAR examinations. In terms of the percentage of the Bar examinees who passed, from years 2000 to 2013, only 24.55% on the average passed, with a low of 17.76% in 2012 to a high of 32.89% in 2011. Thus on the average, 3 out of 4 Bar examinees failed. In 2013, only 22.18% passed the highest success rate then among law schools was a 78.89% passing rate, and only 2 other law schools had a passing rate of more than 70.%” By any standards, even a non-lawyer can see that these are dismal results reflecting a deeply flawed legal education system. Justice Brion proposed five major changes in the system which hopefully will address these issues: First, rethink law school accreditation standards including faculty and facilities. Also
Elfren S. Cruz
BREAKTHROUGH stricter performance standards beyond a passing record of one successful examinee for every three years. My own thinking is they should close those 93 law schools that had a passing average of less than 20% of their Bar examinees. But as Justice Brion said this requires the political will to close down law schools. Second, Brion says that a mandatory aspect of law school regulations is the requirement for teachers based on the awareness that teaching law and practicing law, although related, are distinct disciplines with their own respective qualifications. Teaching law should require more than just passing the Bar. Law schools also need a reasonable number of full time faculty members. Third, there is a need to rationalize the law curriculum which has been in place for several decades. Legal competence in this globalized age requires a wider range of talents, among them legal research advocacy,
counselling, problem solving, and decision making. Brion emphasizes legal education should teach students how to function as competent and responsible lawyers, not merely to qualify as lawyers under the Bar examinations. Fourth, the time has come for radical changes in the BAR exam. He believes that the present system of examination – relevant to the practice needs and environment decades ago – is badly outdated because it is still largely knowledge based and does not properly test for skills and other competencies now demanded by current realities. Fifth, he proposes that the present Legal Education Board should be transferred from the Department of Education to the Supreme Court in order to improve the interaction between legal education and bar admission regulations currently under the Supreme Court. There are radical changes in most areas of education caused by the rapid changes in technology and the increasing globalization of knowledge and economies. Best practices and innovation have become common terms in business, government and education. In almost all professions like management, engineering, accounting, medicine, adapting to a rapidly changing world is becoming a fact of life.

People’s pulse
W
e assume that as Christians, there would be some sort of political ceasefire during the Christmas holidays, presumably extending until after the Pope’s visit in January. But as the run-up to the May 2016 elections draws nearer, the fight could turn into an ugly free-for-all in gunning for the highest position in government. In the latest Pulse Asia survey for potential presidential candidates, Vice President Jejomar Binay continues to be the frontrunner, but his rating went down five points to 26 percent from 31 percent. Senator Grace Poe is gaining a lot of ground (despite her insistence that she is not ready to run for president) with 18 percent, followed by Senator Miriam Santiago at 12 percent, and former president and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada at 10 percent with the rest having single-digit scores including presumed Liberal Party bet Mar Roxas who slipped from second to sixth place with 6 percent. The primary target continues to be Jojo Binay. The vice president’s supporters say the Senate Blue Ribbon subcommittee hearings on corruption allegations is only the beginning, expecting the negative attacks to be even more vicious. Despite the slide in his ratings, many analysts are convinced the vice president is still the man to beat with a solid base from the masa level who identify with the against-all-odds,
Babe Romualdez
BABE’S EYE VIEW rising-above-poverty theme that encapsulates his life story — borne out by the presidential survey results that show a solid support especially in the rural areas. According to Binay supporters, the result of the recent Pulse Asia survey was actually encouraging because the drop was “marginal” despite the “negative attacks” against the vice president. Interestingly, the numbers of Alan Peter Cayetano and Antonio Trillanes — the two most active players in the subcommittee hearings and who have both indicated an interest in running for president — did not show any significant improvement. As a matter of fact, Trillanes only obtained 8 percent among potential 2016 vice presidentiables while Cayetano got 13 percent. Insiders say there are “weapons” stockpiled in the Binay election arsenal that will make a huge impact in May 2016. Aside
But when all is said and done, the “people’s pulse” is only one factor in determining who will lead this country in the next six years. No one will argue that ultimately, the presidency is still a matter of destiny. from the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity (and sorority) that reportedly has over 360 chapters in colleges and universities all over the country – not to mention the alumni associations here and abroad – the “sister city” program that was started during Binay’s term as mayor of Makati has given him deep ties with local government leaders in many parts of the country. Apparently, the program is not limited to cities alone but also encompasses municipalities and provinces — from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao — and any locality that gets elevated to the status of sister city entitles its constituents to hospitalization benefits and scholarships granted by the local government of Makati. It is said that all politics is local, and support from the grassroots level is certainly a critical factor when it comes to winnability. Let’s not also forget, there is what we call the “geographical factor” — where it is presumed that Binay would be strong in voterich Region 4 because his father hails from Batangas, while he can count on the North since his mother is from Isabela. On the other hand, we all know anything can happen
from now until E-day 2016, especially if one considers the oft-quoted phrase that “the presidency is (a matter of) destiny.” This is precisely what happened to President Noynoy Aquino and his mother, who found themselves catapulted to the presidency due to a confluence of events. In the case of Mrs. Cory Aquino, no one would have thought that a woman who has always remained in the background – some even say relegated under the shadow of her charismatic and popular husband – would carve her place in history as the first woman president of the country, the reluctant candidate who became a rallying figure for the opposition after the death of Ninoy. In retrospect, Noynoy’s path to the presidency was almost exactly the same. After all, he was nowhere near the radar of prospective presidential candidates for the 2010 elections. The death of his mother in August 2009 changed all that – and people saw the “hesitant” candidate giving in to the clamor of the people who were also, understandably, overcome with emotion at the death of the
woman revered as the icon of democracy in this country and wanted the son to honor the memory of his mother. And so there is the proverbial “dark horse” in another reluctant candidate Grace Poe whose numbers have consistently been inching upward. She has said countless times that she is not ready for the job, yet she continues to be in the radar screen for the presidency. We are told that aside from Chiz Escudero, Senator Serge Osmeña is also one of her close advisers. Serge was the LP campaign manager and political strategist who catapulted Noynoy to Malacañang. There are also serious conversations within the Liberal Party to make Grace Poe their guest presidential candidate. Even Mar himself told me that the choice is really up to the president. Be that as it may, analysts say that if antiBinay groups will not agree on a unified candidate and end up fielding their own bets, it’s possible that their votes will be divided while Binay’s base will remain solid. But when all is said and done, the “people’s pulse” is only one factor in determining who will lead this country in the next six years. No one will argue that ultimately, the presidency is still a matter of destiny. Noynoy Aquino, Joseph Estrada, Gloria Arroyo and Fidel Ramos can all very well attest to that. -Philstar

T
he winter months are a common time for people to develop low back pain. From slips and falls to shifts in barometric pressure and tighter muscles due to the cold weather, winter can be pretty brutal on your lower back. One of the most common causes of lower back pain during the winter months is snow shoveling. Snow removal injuries, however, are completely preventable if you know the proper technique for moving the white stuff properly. Here are a few tips that may help you prevent unwanted back pain this winter.
1. Planning
Before moving your first shovelful or getting dressed, spend a few minutes planning. Where are you going to move the snow? What’s the best way to tackle the snowfall? You want to avoid moving the snow twice, so careful preparation is an important key in conserving your low back.
2. Pick the right shovel
You need the right tool for the right job and snow-moving tools are made in all shapes and sizes. Taking your time and picking the right one is an important part of maintaining a healthy back. An ergonomic snow shovel can help take some of the effort out of snow removal chores. Look for a lightweight shovel with a curved handle and plastic blade.
3. Warm up
You should take time to warm up before heading out to shovel snow. Large joints like hips and shoulders require movement for the synovial fluid to lubricate the joint properly. A light walk, arm circles or some squats will help get those joints prepared for the rigorous task ahead. Stretch your low back and hamstrings (the large muscles in the back of the thigh) with some gentle stretching exercises will also help with balance and activating muscles. Bottomline: Athletes warm up before game time. So you should, too.
4. Proper technique
Always try to push snow rather than lifting it. It may be easy to lift the first few shovelfuls when you’re fresh and energetic, but using up all the energy in the first five minutes will lead to poor form and a bad back in short order. Whenever it’s easier, push the snow. If you have to lift the snow,
protect your back by lifting properly and safely: • stand with feet at hip width for balance • leverage during lifts is attained by separating hands on the shovel handle • bend from your knees, avoid arching your back • Engage your core (tighten your stomach muscles) and exhale (breathe out) while lifting • avoid twisting while lifting • When snow is deep, shovel small amounts (1-2 inches) at a time. • If the ground is icy or slippery, spread salt, sand or kitty litter to create better foot traction. • Start slow and continue at a slow pace (Suggestion: shovel for 5-7 minutes and rest 2-3 minutes). • Knowledge • Shoveling snow is a strenuous activity that is very stressful on the heart. • Exhaustion makes you more susceptible to frostbite, injury and hypothermia. • Stop shoveling and call 911 if you have: o discomfort or heaviness in the chest, arms or neck o unusual or prolonged shortness of breath o a dizzy or faint feeling o excessive sweating or nausea and vomiting • Consider hiring a student or using a volunteer service if you are a senior. • Shovel at least 1-2 hours after eating and avoid caffeine and nicotine. • Drink lots of water to prevent dehydration. • Stretch your hip flexors, quads, hamstrings and abdominals after a shoveling session • Shovel early and often: o new snow is lighter than heavily packed/partially melted snow o take frequent breaks We hope this helps you this winter to avoid low back pain. JENNYLYN Mercado is the newest calendar girl of Tanduay Rhum for 2015. She is the first mother to join the elite faces of the liquor brand that include Heart Evangelista, KC Concepcion, Carla Abellana, Iya Villania and Nina Jose, among others. The 27-year-old actress-triathlete said it’s been her most daring pictorial, the first time she had worn a two-piece bikini in a photo shoot. She made it a point that her mom was first to see the photos. On accepting the offer to pose sexy, she said, “Why not? Once in a lifetime opportunity. Habang kaya pa ng katawan ko and toned pa, sige!” Jennylyn devoted two weeks to prepare for the shoot. “Kasi nakakahiya naman kung ie-edit lang nila ’di ba? Parang bibigyan ko pa sila ng trabaho. Saka iba ’yung confidence ’pag handa ka eh, alam mo sa sarili mo na kaya mo namang ilabas ’to ng wala kang hesitation…” said she. The actress said the photos show her “fierce” side, which doesn’t happen everyday. Though already a mom (her son is five-year-old Jazz), she believes in the importance of living a balanced life that includes exercise, healthy eating and keeping a positive mindset. Michael Joe T. The
Evo versus
STI
debate is over Mitsubishi is a xing the Evo
T
he iconic Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution – or Evo, for short – has been around since 1992. There have been many theories surround what Mitsubishi would do with its performance sedan, from using a 1.1-liter hybrid to utilizing a direct- injection diesel setup. The Evo has a lot going for it, but sadly the 11th generation Evo was doomed the day Mitsubishi President Osamu Masuko revealed a new mid-term business plan. The plan prioritizes in-house sedans and forming joint projects with the Renault-Nissan alliance.
With no Evo for the future, the classic argument of which is better, the STI or the EVO is now over According to Autocar, President Masuko stated, “When you consider Mitsubishi’s size and management resources, we can’t do everything on our own.” This is true, and I can see why Mitsubishi is focusing on sales numbers rather than track times. Mitsubishi is ditching the Evo because it wants to increase global sales by 29 percent to 1.43 million by the end of the 2017 fiscal year. So what does this mean for the future of Mitsubishi’s per formance line? Nothing, because currently
the company has not directly revealed any outlines for the nex t Evo. Don’t worr y, Mitsubishi has no plans to stop racing at Pikes Peak or halting its pursuit of per formance. It’s just switching its per formance propulsion from gasoline to electricity. With no Evo for the future, the classic argument of which is bet ter, the STI or the EVO is now over. No more tuner-car bat tles and no more four-wheeled, four-door, four-cylinder madness. (Joe Mahan)

In an interview with “The Buzz” which was aired on Sunday, Inigo did not directly answer the speculations but admitted that he is indeed trying to maximize their time together. “I didn’t really get to spend much time with him growing up and I want to be able to maximize our time together. Pacman: Mayweather has
nowhere to run
GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines – Boxing champion Manny Pacquiao has vowed to chase Floyd Mayweather Jr. into ring submission after his US rival offered to fight him next year in a blockbuster world title face-off. “He has reached a dead end. He has nowhere to run but to fight me,” Pacquiao said Saturday, hours after the undefeated Mayweather issued the May 2 challenge on US television. However, Pacquiao apparently didn’t get too excited about the statements Mayweather made the other day. He said his rival was the key for the fight to push through, recalling past ridiculous demands. The two were long-time rivals as the “best pound-for-
pound” boxers of their generation, but the dream fight has never materialized to the disappointment of the boxing world. “I will try my best to (make) this a thrilling and entertaining fight. But I doubt if he’s gonna engage me in a slugfest,” said Pacquiao, winner of an unprecedented eight world titles in different weight classes. “You all know his fighting style. Most of his previous fights, if not all, induced us to sleep,” Pacquiao said here. Should the fight happen, Pacquiao, who turns 36 on Wednesday, said he will do to Mayweather what he did to another previously undefeated American, Chris Algieri, who lost to the World Boxing Orga-
nization welterweight champion in Macau last month. “I know what I have to do. I will chase him wherever he goes just in case he decides to run around the ring. We will devise a good fight plan,” Pacquiao added. Speaking to Showtime Sports in the US on Friday night, Mayweather, 37, said he wants his next fight to be against the Filipino star. However, the American nicknamed “Money” said – without giving details – the expected richest fight in boxing history will only happen if he receives a much bigger share of the purse than his opponent. He called Pacquiao “desperate” then pointed to promoter Bob Arum as the reason why
the fight hasn’t happened when it’s the one everybody wants to see. Mayweather said there’s no way Pacquiao can get an even share of the purse, which could amount to hundreds of millions, because the Filipino lost two in a row in 2012. In 2012 there was speculation that a fight between the two could lead to the first $200 million purse in boxing history with much of that money coming from pay-per-view sales. At one point Pacquiao said Mayweather offered him a $40 million purse on the condition the American would keep the pay-per-view money, which would have amounted to more than double what Pacquiao received.
Previous talks were also scuttled because Mayweather says Pacquiao refused to submit to random blood testing. “Mayweather can get the amount he wants. As early as January this year, I challenged him to a charity fight. Until now, he has not agreed to it. So, money is not the issue in our fight,” Pacquiao said Saturday. Pacquiao is now on a threefight win streak and only last Nov. 23 he floored Algieri six times en route to a lopsided but entertaining decision. Mayweather, on the other hand, doesn’t care whom Pacquiao beats. To him what matters is that he’s undefeated in 47 fights and Pacquiao is 3-2 the last two years and 57-5-2 overall.
Arum blasts Floyd’s May 2 date as ‘disrespectful’ to Mexicans A potential roadblock to the highly anticipated Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather showdown has surfaced after Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum said he does not like the fight date set by the American superstar. Mayweather, in an interview with Showtime, declared that he wants to fight Pacquiao on May 2, 2015, a few weeks after the “Pacman” publicly called on him to “step up” and agree to
make the bout that fight fans deserve. According to a report from RingTV.com, Arum does not believe that Mayweather and Pacquiao should fight on May 2, which is the Cinco de Mayo weekend. Instead, Mexican prodigy Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is the one who deserves to fight on that particular date – possibly against Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto.
“Let me tell you something, and this, I really feel very, very strongly about. That weekend celebrates Cinco de Mayo, which is a Mexican holiday, which commemorates the outstanding, courageous stand of a lot of Mexican civilians who turned back the French Imperial army,” Arum said, noting that the weekend is a “significant holiday” in Mexico and among MexicanAmericans. abs-cbnnews

Nathalie Hart apologizes for rape joke ACTRESS Nathalie Hart, previously known as Princess Snell, earned netizens’ ire after posting an Instagram photo with the caption, “According to my dads lesson: If rape is inevitable, lay back and enjoy it! #ihavethebestadvicer #mvdadisthebest hahaha.” Netizen accused Nathalie of taking the rape issue lightly. She has since deleted the
offensive Instagram post. Incorrect and irresponsible “This is to humbly and publicly apologize for my post. I understand that what I stated was incorrect and irresponsible,” Nathalie posted on Friday, December 12. The actress said in ABS-CBN’s Facebook account that she does not condone any form of violence.
“Hey Guys I just wanna inform you, I truly am regretful and displeased with what I posted. I understand why I have received hate but I want you to know I am very much against any form of violence, abuse and rape.” The former Playboy Philippines cover girl defended her father, whom she mentioned in the controversial post.
No malice “Above anything else, my father is the kindest, most thoughtful person I know, doesn’t condone my actions and isn’t to blame for my mistake.” She admitted her father issued the controversial statement, but it “didn’t come from a place of malice or ill intent.” Nathalie added that her dad was just trying to cheer her up from the hate messages she has been getting prior to the controversial Instagram post. “The reason why my dad said this statement to me was because I had expressed my concern to him for some things that people had been saying to me before this whole issue. I’ve been receiving hateful messages from this person that I was going to die in a most horrific way and my family would be part of it. This is why my father was trying to light-heartedly cheer me up because I was so upset. It didn’t come from a place of malice or ill intent. The reason why I posted the statement on Instagram is because I use my account to inspire myself and others.”

and the Aswang collaboration MANILA, Philippines - The Aswang Chronicles has officially expanded into a movie franchise with the 2014 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry Kubot, backed by a partnership deal among the producers GMA Films, Agosto Dos Pictures and Reality Entertainment that was inked last Dec. 12. Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles lead star Dingdong Dantes said in a presscon, “I believe in collaboration, and most of the time, there are better results when it is a collaboration,” citing that the combined resources and minds help ensure a better outcome. Dingdong’s production outfit Agosto Dos Pictures first teamed up with GMA Films and Reality Entertainment in 2012 for the first installment titled Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles. Dingdong said that from the onset, director Erik Matti envisioned Aswang Chronicles as a franchise. “It can go beyond two or three movies…all I can say is, watch out for the ending,” he added. The sequel Kubot picks up the story where it left off in the place called Pulupandan, where the entire aswang massacre happened. The protagonists led by aswang slayer Macoy (Dingdong) leave the place and past behind. But just when they think they finally have
their peace and quiet, trouble comes back at them from aswangs of another kind called Kubot. Direk Erik, who is an Ilonggo, said that Kubot, in Visayan folklore, refers to a clan of long-haired female aswangs. Despite the aswang theme, Dingdong stressed that it stands apart from the horror films in this year’s MMFF line-up. “We consider ours more of a crossover between horror, comedy and adventure, and there’s action in it also. It’s a little bit of everything. Because we’ve seen our strengths in Tiktik — horror and comedy. The others, in respect to their material, they are straight horror, right? (In
our film) we have variety.” Playing Dingdong’s villains are Elizabeth Oropesa, leader of the Kubot, and KC Montero as the avenging son of the aswang clan leader who was killed in Tiktik. KC described his character named Doms, “My methods are very aggressive, he’s a newgeneration (aswang)…(my character) is very strong with tongue power (laughs).” It was very challenging for KC because “I’m not an actor. I’ve not done movies since 2002. My last movie was with Judy Ann Santos and I still had hair at that time. (All these years) I’ve kinda stuck to TV hosting and radio.” Philstar

Kristine trusts only the best for herself & family
MANILA, Philippines - Sleeping on a comfortable bed that also protects one’s health is not just a lifestyle choice for Kristine Hermosa — it’s a beloved family tradition that helps strengthen the bonds not just between herself and her husband Oyo Sotto, but those of her two children, Ondrea and Kiel, as well. After a hard day’s work attending to
her show business commitments or her business ventures, Kristine’s orthopedic bed is her refuge and sanctuary. “Well, I use it for rest, naturally. And I spend time with my husband there,” she intimates, adding that her before-bed ritual is simple. “I shower and freshen up and read my devotional book to end my day. If I’m still not sleepy, I watch TV.”
Though her growing kids don’t do it on all seven nights a week, there are occasional evenings when Ondrea and Kiel do sleep with their parents. “The kids understand when we tell them that they are already growing up and can’t sleep with mom and dad all the time,” says Kristine, “but we — all of us — always play on our bed.”

“Dream Dad” charms primetime viewers, hits all-time high national TV rating Primetime TV’s charming drama series “Dream Dad” achieves a new milestone as the Kapamilya teleserye starring the newest Kapamilya “couple” Zanjoe Marudo and child star Jana Agoncillo reaches its highest national TV rating since it premiered in November. According to data from Kantar Media last Thursday (December 4), the primetime TV series scored its all-time high national TV ratings of 32.2%, or double of its rival program on GMA “More Than Words” (16%). “It’s heartwarming and rewarding to feel the strong support of viewers for our show. I am very happy
for the whole cast and crew, and especially for Jana because she is one of the reasons why viewers are hooked to ‘Dream Dad’,” said Zanjoe who plays the role of Baste, the bachelor who Baby (portrayed by Jana) calls “Mr. President.” “We are lucky that Jana is the one chosen to portray Baby because she is really perfect for the role,” said Zanjoe. “She really amazes me. We are always playing on the set, but every time we do our scenes together, she is very prepared and has always memorized her lines. She is very natural when it comes to acting.” According to Zanjoe, TV viewers will get to see more of Baste and Baby’s feel-good moments in the continuation of “Dream Dad.”

The Philippine legal profession must learn to accept that they cannot continue to operate in a cocoon of protectionism while the society around them is embracing change. For example, in all other professions – in terms of time – services are now rendered in a matter of weeks, days or even hours. But our lawyers and
judiciary still think that they are immune to change and society will accept justice in terms of years or even decades. Philippine justice, and the education of its lawyers, requires radical changes now and not in some distant future. Philstar

Actually, this is not so unusual, is it? God has always worked wonders for the forgotten, for the despised, and for the lowly. From the very beginning of his time on earth, Jesus came to those who felt horrible and were humble. The Apostle Paul said it this way in I Corinthians 1:26-29: “Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth…He chose the lowly things of the world and the despised things…so that no one may boast before Him.” The Lord comes to the lowly, to the most undeserving, to the neglected and marginalized in order to show His power. The Shepherds help us see that God has a message for sinners just like us. Everyone matters to God. And the only announcement of Christ’s birth goes out to a bunch of uneducated outcasts. Indeed, as the song says: What a strange way to the save the world! As we briefly look at the shepherds’ response, let me share one lesson that we can apply to our lives so that we don’t
forget the Son this season. Be attentive to what God has called you to do. The first thing we see about the shepherds is that they were attentive to their jobs. Listen to Luke 2:8 “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over the flocks at night.” They were so committed to their career that they never left their work. They not only worked the third shift, they pulled the first and second as well. This was a 24/7 deal for them. We also see from this verse that they were faithful, since they were “keeping watch.” It was often the case that the different flocks would come together at night and all come into the same fold. One of the shepherds would literally lie across the entrance to make sure none of the sheep would get out and no predators in, which gives new meaning to John 10:9 when Jesus said: “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture.” Notice that God came to those who were attentive at the jobs they were given to do. They weren’t slackers and He met them right where they were. Likewise, whatever God has
horoscope ARIES (March 21-April 19): For now, the top of your priority list belongs to the ones you love — but you’d never admit to it! They know how you feel, though, and that’s really all that counts. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You’ve been dealing with an awful lot lately, especially when it comes to secrets and those who keep them. You’re done trying to keep anything inessential under wraps at this point. In fact, you’re ready to blow the lid off of anything that’s asked of you. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You’ve recovered from an old or recent trauma, but it wasn’t easy, and you don’t want to go through anything like it ever again. Fortunately, events like those that took place then are quite rare in your world — as will what you go through today, for entirely different reasons. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Your talent for making nice with everyone is legendary. You can keep the peace, even when you’re not sure whose side you’re on. That trait comes in handy today, since at least two people you care for are playing tug-of-war, and need someone to mediate. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You’ve never been short on charm, and you know exactly how to use that gift of to the utmost. Today, when a loved one pops up and silently asks you to help them out in some new way, you do it without uttering word — and you do it so well. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): For most of us, anything that even comes close to balancing the checkbook or getting our finances in order is so stressful or boring that we’d prefer having neck surgery. When your checkbook and bills need to be done, however,
called you to do, be attentive to it and do it with excellence. You may be thinking that God doesn’t even know you exist and if He does, He’s somehow mad at you. You are not insignificant to Immanuel. God will meet you right where you are. You don’t have to clean yourself up on your own or act like someone you’re not. If you smell like a shepherd, let Jesus wash you up. If your sins are wiping you out, allow Jesus to lift you up. Heaven chooses to bring a message to the messed up, to the low achievers as well as the high. You were created in the image of God as an original masterpiece and the signature of the Creator is inscribed on your soul. I love what Corrie Ten Boom once said: “If Jesus were born one thousand times in Bethlehem and not in me, then I would still be lost.” It’s time today to make sure that Jesus is born in you. You can do that right now by praying this prayer: “Lord Jesus, Thank you for loving me even when I feel like a loser. I don’t understand how you can accept me when I don’t measure up. I confess that I am a sinner and I want to turn from the way I’ve been living. I need you to be my Savior. You are
not only do you not whine. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You may be trying not to let your feelings show at the moment, but there’s only one way for you to pull it off: Try putting some serious distance between you and whomever you want to avoid oversharing with. Otherwise, there’s just no way you can hide them long enough for it to matter. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You’re famous for your love of discovering new (and old) secrets, it’s you — in most, if not all, circumstances. At the moment, your intensifying investigation is even more appealing to you, though the nature and seriousness of the issue don’t matter at all. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): When someone close needs a charismatic, well-spoken ally, they immediately think of you — as well they should! Your gift of gab is shining brightly right now, so it’s likely you end up standing next to a friend, arms crossed. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You’re famous for your work ethic, so if you’re under extra pressure right now to get a big job done quickly, not to worry — nobody else is! The tricky part might be getting others to work with you — or at least, it would be tricky for anyone else. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): If you have any doubts about a loved one right now, don’t let anyone talk you into letting those doubts slide. You have remarkably good instincts, especially when it comes to those closest to you. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar 20): You’re one of the most sensitive people in your world, so when something seems to be a bit off today, you’re the first to know. One tiny, inconvenient little fact that’s out of place may be bothering you, and whether or not you know it.
the Christ, the Son of the Living God. I desire to live under your lordship for the rest of my life. Thank you for not only being born but for dying in my place and rising again so that I can be born again. I now receive the gift of salvation and forgiveness by asking you to come into my life. Make me into the person you want me to be. I want to act on what I know to be true and enable me to adore you for the rest of my life. I want to exhibit your joy even when life is junky. In the name of Immanuel, the babe in Bethlehem, I ask this. Amen.” Christmas is real history but it must become your story. You can read the rest of the story about the Shepherd’s Joy and the rest of their responses in The Gospel of St. Luke 2:8-20. Be awed by God’s message to you. Accept the gift of good news. I am not very sure what the minister might have done, but I recognize that he put in some effort in making that situation turn around. I give credit where it is due but it is important not to let up. Five smart ways to stretch your holiday budget T
he holiday season is just around the corner, bringing with it par ties, gif t-giving, travel and ex travagant feasts — but how can you have a great time and pamper the ones you care about on a limited income? A lit tle planning and creativity are key! Here are some tips for enjoying the holidays without breaking the bank: TESS AVISO-NEWTON
1. Plan early and set a budget
Budgeting for the holiday season is something you should think about in January or February, rather than at the end of the year, explains Sylvia Lim, a Vancouver-based Cer tified Financial Planner, Cer tified General Accountant and author of Finances af ter 55, in order to avoid the stress of dealing with all holiday-related expenses at once. Take a look at the discretionary amount you have to spend on your family and friends, make a list of those you’re planning to buy gif ts for, as well as any expected travel plans, events and par ties early in the year. Plan how much you want to spend on each person/event and be sure to stick to your budget.
2. Plan how to meet that budget
Set ting cash aside every month is a great way to save for your holiday expenses, says Lim. For example, if you think you want to spend $1,200 on Christmas gif ts or travel expenses, set aside $100 a month. “That way, you don’t have the pressure of coming up with the money when it’s holiday-time, or not having the money, spending it, and then dealing with the af termath in the New Year,” she says. If you do use your credit card for holiday shopping/expenses, Lim recommends that you have the money behind it to pay the bill when it arrives, to avoid paying additional interest charges in the New Year.
3. Know who you want to buy gifts for and purchase early
Make a list of those you’re buying for, and ask family and friends ahead of time what they would like (ideally by September or October) says Lim. This way you can keep an eye out for sales prior to Thanksgiving, such as end-of-season clothing sales.

4. Be honest with your family
It is possible to indulge the ones you care about during the holiday season and stay within your budget, says Lim, but don’t live beyond your means to do it. Be honest with your family if this is not a good time for you to be spending too much money on gif ts. One money-saving holiday tip might involve suggesting a change in tradition. An idea that is becoming quite popular, she says, involves drawing names within your family — with the end goal being that each person buys a nice gif t for one person, instead of buying gif ts for everyone. Alternatively, if you’re hosting a holiday dinner, consider reducing your costs by making it potluck — ask everyone to bring their favourite dish.
5. Get cr afty
Are you a talented knit ter? Ar tist?Woodworker? Or perhaps you bake in your spare time? Use your talents to make personalized, handcraf ted gif ts for those on your holiday list — this can of ten cut costs, and everyone is sure to appreciate the thought and ef for t that you’ve put in.
