Not Ebola

ANILA (Nov. 16) - The Filipino peacekeeper from the Ebola-stricken West African state of Liberia who experienced chilling and high fever during the 21-day quarantine at Caballo Island in Cavite is suffering from malaria, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Saturday. Acting Health Secretary Janette Garin said the trooper tested positive for plasmodim falciparum in the blood, one of the strains of viruses causing malaria. Garin said this strain of ma-

laria is dangerous as it could affect the brain. However, because of the early detection, the patient did not have any complications. On Friday, the DOH announced that a Filipino soldier

who served as a UN peacekeeper exhibited fever, chills and body malaise, which are also symptoms of hemorrhagic fever or Ebola. The unnamed trooper was transferred from Carballo Island to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Alabang for further tests. “The Philippines is still Ebola free. Our patient is negative for Ebola,” Garin declared. Garin said the other peacekeepers were happy after they were informed that their colleague tested negative for Ebola. RITM chief Socorro Lupisan said two tests were conducted on the patient. Lupisan said one of these was polymerace chain reaction, a test to determine if the virus had the genetic makeup of Ebola. The other, an antigen test, was to see if the patient had developed antibodies. Garin said they were able to rule out Ebola with these two tests, despite not having completed the 48-hour period. She explained the period was only needed if there were doubts on

the test results, resulting in the need for a repeat of the tests. With these two tests, there was no need for further examinations, according to Garin. Garin said the peacekeeper was subjected to combination drug treatment to prevent complications. The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said that all the 133 peacekeepers coming from Liberia tested negative for Ebola after rigid screening by the United Nations. However, they were still quarantined in Caballo Island for 21 days as a precautionary measure. Garin said it was possible the trooper had had malaria before and he was not properly cured, or that he contracted malaria before he left Liberia. Garin said the patient would be quarantined for a week, his blood tests to be monitored every eight hours. Once cleared of malaria, the trooper will be sent back to Caballo to finish the quarantine period, she said. “This is not the first time

Congestion at Philippine port shows no sign of wavering

APL suspends shipments from India to Manila as congestion mounts Singapore-based ocean carrier APL has temporarily suspended acceptance of shipments from India to Manila, as congestion at the Philippines port shows no sign of wavering. The move follows months-long port clogging problems at Manila, leading to increased vessel turn times and higher operating costs for shipping lines. “Opening up for fresh bookings into Manila will be advised accordingly once roll pool is cleared,” APL India said in a notice to customers. The announcement comes a week after APL, the container arm of Neptune Orient Lines, said it would impose congestion surcharges for all cargo, whether dry or refrigerated, moving on its services from India to Manila Starting Nov. 15, the planned surcharges will be $250 per 20-foot container and $500 per 40-foot container. Congestion at Manila has spread to Batangas, one of the ports handling spillover cargo from Philippines’ major container gateway. Maersk is late October that it will be limiting shipments to the port “to an absolute minimum.” The problems at Batangas, located 110 kilometers (68 miles) south of Manila, is collateral damage from still-worsening congestion experienced during much of this year at Manila, triggered initially in February by a several hour a day ban on trucks on city streets imposed by the city’s mayor, which caused containers to back up at the port. The ban was at first eased and then cancelled in September, and fees were imposed on overstaying containers at Manila terminals to clear them out, but the damage had been done. joc. com news

G-20 leaders finalize details of growth plan BRISBANE, Australia - World leaders on Sunday prepared to release details of a plan aimed at injecting life into the world’s listless economy, with infrastructure investment and the lowering of trade barriers flagged as key components of the initiative. Leaders of the world’s 20 largest economies, wrapping up a two-day gathering in the Australian city of Brisbane, were hammering out the final components of a plan to boost global GDP by more than 2 percent above expected levels over the next five years, which amounts to around $2 trillion. “That is millions of jobs and trillions of dollars in extra production,” Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said in an address to the G-20 conference. “Yes, we want freer trade and we will deliver it. Yes, we need more infrastructure and we will build it.” G-20 nations, which represent 85 percent of the global economy, are under pressure to take definitive action at this year’s summit, rather than simply producing a set of vague, unmeasurable goals. The International Monetary Fund has

warned about a “new mediocre” for the world economy, putting renewed focus on the G-20’s growth initiative. The final communique, to be issued later Sunday, will be based on individual plans submitted by each G-20 country, outlining how they will achieve their contribution toward the growth target. World GDP this year is about $77 trillioncool. Australian Treasurer Joe Hockey said the group’s strategies include 1,000 measures that will lift infrastructure investment, increase trade and competition, cut red tape and increase employment. “While we still face economic challenges in many parts of the world, I’m optimistic our 2 percent commitment will deliver the growth the world needs,” Hockey said. But rights groups such as The Civil Society 20 group, or C20, want assurances that the poor will benefit the most from the plans, estimating that the additional growth could lift 1 billion people out of poverty if it was poured into the poorest 20 percent of G-20 households. In between official talks,

leaders have taken time to enjoy a bit of Aussie culture. A photo of a smiling Abbott and Russian President Vladimir Putin standing side-by-side while holding koalas was a rare lighthearted moment in an otherwise frosty atmosphere surrounding the

Russian leader’s presence. Putin has come under fire from multiple leaders at the summit over the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The leaders also enjoyed an Aussie barbecue at the state Parliament House, feasting on

king prawns, oysters, lamb and pavlova, a popular meringue dessert generally served with fruit and whipped cream. Several of their spouses, meanwhile, visited a wildlife sanctuary where they, too, cuddled with koalas and fed kangaroos. Philstar

Nature as classroom in innovative DENR project MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) recently launched a project where nature serves as the classroom to promote environment awareness. In cooperation with the Divine Word College of Calapan (DWCC), the DENR introduced the “Bangklase: Klase sa Bangka, Ibang Klase” project, a unique nature-based approach to environmental education using as classroom the 8,125-hectare Naujan Lake in Oriental Mindoro province. Naujan Lake is the country’s fifth largest lake and was designated as a “wetland of international importance” by the Geneva-based Ramsar Convention Bureau in 1999. DENR Secretary Ramon Paje

said Bangklase “breathes new life to government efforts to inspire deeper and wider interest in Philippine environmentalism.” “Under this innovative project, students are taught within the context of actual experience, an opportunity missed when taught in a conventional classroom setting,” Paje said. Bangklase is an educational shipboard project with maximum capacity of 150 persons, aimed at conserving and preserving the Naujan Lake National Park (NLNP) through environmental education, ecotourism development and public awareness. “It reconnects people with the communal experience of being awed by Mother Nature, and learning the breathtaking

varieties of life in Naujan Lake by heart,” Paje said. The project could be a first in the country, according to DENR-Region 4B (Mimaropa) technical director for protected areas Gwendolyn Bambalan. She said the project’s twopronged strategy addresses the need to promote the conservation of the lake as an alternative

mode of learning biodiversity and endorse ecotourism as a revenue and income generating scheme, both for local government units and residents. Naujan Lake is 14 kilometers long, nestled within the 21,655hectare NLNP, which was elevated to national park status in 1968 by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 335.

NLNP was included as one of the initial components of the National Integrated Protected Areas System pursuant to the NIPAS Act of 1992. It has been designated a Ramsar Site because of its rich biodiversity and for being an area critical for breeding and migrating waterfowl and shorebirds. Philstar

Duterte: Human trafficking can be solved DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is confident that human trafficking cases in Davao Region can be properly addressed like how local authorities solve the problems on illegal drugs. Duterte said he deals with human trafficking crimes equally with illegal drugs cases, adding that both crimes get “the same consequences.” Based on data obtained from the Department of Justice, there are a total of 10 human trafficking cases in Davao City this year. Davao City recorded the highest number of cases, followed by Tagum City with five and Davao del Norte with one, according to Assistant Davao Regional Prosecutor lawyer Robert Michael Razon. “We are doing our very best but the problem is our best is not enough,” Duterte said.

He said human trafficking is alarming since it can happen anywhere and everywhere, especially at the airport, seaport and bus terminal, where victims are being transported from one place to another. The US Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report placed the Philippines in Tier 2 status for the fourth year in a row. Based on a report posted online by Philippine Star, the Philippines was first upgraded to Tier 2 in June 2011, considered an improvement after the country’s initial convictions of individuals involved in human trafficking. Department of Social Welfare and Development Director Priscilla Razon said that

as of January to November this year, its office has served 98 cases of human trafficking, with 81 females and 17 males. Of the 98 cases, Razon said most of the victims were forced to work, get into sexual exploitations, cyber pornography and prostitution. (Arianne Caryl N. Casas/SunStar Davao)

PH exports seen slowing in Q4 MANILA, Philippines - Merchandise exports growth may start decelerating in the last quarter of the year, Singaporebased investment bank DBS said, citing the slowdown in imports which are largely inputs to outbound shipments of the country. “Expect to see some moderation in export growth in the fourth quarter. Total 2014 export growth may now come in lower than our earlier estimate of nine percent,” DBS said in a research note. “Yet, even at the current pace, net exports are likely to contribute about one-third of overall GDP (gross domestic product) growth this year, which we still estimate to be circa 6.4 percent,” the bank added. Exports increased 15.7 percent to $5.849 billion in September from $5.056 billion in the same month last year, latest

government data showed. DBS noted that the growth rate was above expectations and this brought the third-quarter expansion at 12.9 percent over year-ago levels. The Philippine Statistics Authority last week said merchandise exports growth was driven by strong demand for electronic products, which rose 13.6 percent to $2.442 billion in September. Other major commodities which helped increase merchandise exports in September were chemicals, machinery and transport equipment, other mineral products, coconut oil, and other manufactures. “Signs from imports data, however, provide reasons to be more cautious going forward,” DBS said. Merchandise imports contracted 1.3 percent to $5.491 billion in August from $5.563 billion a year ago on lower

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte pointed out the 133 Filipino peacekeepers underwent rigid medical screening before they were quarantined in Caballo Island. She also repeated the statement of the DOH that Ebola could only be infectious once the symptoms were existent. “There are those asking why we are doing this process...the 21-day quarantine that we imposed upon their arrival here in the Philippines is just an additional measure to ensure (safety)...and for the peace of mind of their family and relatives and the people,” Valte said. Valte noted the pronouncement of the DOH that the Filipino peacekeeper suffered from malaria and that he could have had it while in Liberia and a recurrence was possible. “But just to be sure, he is being tested and his condition is being monitored. The DOH has assured us of final information on his condition by Monday. So let us not panic and there is no reason to panic,” Valte said. Valte said 21 days had been decided to be the maximum quarantine period because the symptoms should come out during this period if a person was a carrier.

that a Filipino peacekeeper has contracted malaria,” a military officer revealed. Years before, a Filipino peacekeeper deployed in Liberia and another in the troubled South Sudan succumbed to malaria.

Nothing to worry about

The government appealed for calm following reports that one of the 133 Filipino peacekeepers displayed symptoms similar to Ebola on Thursday. The AFP stressed the Filipino peacekeepers, before their repatriation, were subjected to a UN-supervised Ebola-screening test back in Monrovia and were all declared under a “no-risk” category. “They don’t have any exposure to Ebola-infected areas in Liberia,” said Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc, AFP Public Affairs Office chief. Cabunoc said any official announcement of medical findings on the peacekeeper confined at RITM should come from the DOH, not from the AFP. Malacañang also called on the public to rely on the DOH for any information regarding Ebola.

demand. More importantly, a slower pace of fiscal spending and still the sluggish state of global economy could have weighed on sentiment among

Straight up the Philippines in the future. A few days ago, I had the opportunity to visit with my friend Partylist Congressman Agapito Guanlao who was in Winnipeg for a visit and to get a better understanding of Canada. I first met Congressman Guanlao a few years ago in Pampanga where he and I distributed free bags of rice and some school kits to children living in San Fernando. The children had recently gone through a flood disaster. Together we met with other politicians including Governor Lilia Pineda. I was able to get to know the Congressman because we shared a common friend from Winnipeg, Vic Ramos. When Vic heard that I was going

HIS is the time of the year when we are getting ready for Christmas. Some of my neighbours have already put up their Christmas lights! After Halloween, the stores are packed with Christmas decors and shelves are filled with Christmas gift ideas. Those boxes packed away months ago are brought out and all of that lovely Christmas stuff is put out. The houses are decorated with lights and trimmings and yards become the showcases of Christmas display. What do you do to prepare for Christmas? In my house there is a mass cleaning effort. The whole house is cleaned from top to bottom to get everything in tiptop shape. Before any decorations can be put out the whole house gets a good cleaning. side from promoting better relations among feuding neighbors, there was another significant development at the recently concluded annual summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum: a pledge from two of the world’s largest consumers of fossil fuels to cooperate in confronting climate change. The United States and China committed to make substantial reductions in their carbon dioxide emissions within specific periods. Chinese President Xi Jinping said his country’s emissions would peak by 2030 before declining, with renewables to constitute 20 percent of the energy mix. US President Barack Obama, for his part, said that by 2025, his country would be emitting 26 to 28 percent less carbon dioxide than in 2005. Some quarters believe the Chinese reduction commitment should take place much earlier. Still, percentage reductions in China translate into huge amounts in a country that remains heavily dependent on coal for its energy needs. The choking pollution in its cities including the capital Beijing might have encouraged the commitment. Smaller countries are expected to do their part. The Philippines, being one of the most vulnerable to the devastating impact of climate change, must contribute its share in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Relevant laws have been passed in recent years, including the Clean Air Act. As in many other laws in this country, however, enforcement leaves much to be desired. A drive around Metro Manila will show immediately that authorities have failed to implement laws on vehicular emissions. Industrial compliance is also spotty. Implementation of the law has also shown a need to amend certain provisions. The ban on waste incineration deserves a second look with the emergence of better incineration technology and the lack of facilities for proper garbage disposal. More legislation is also needed to encourage investments in renewable energy. Developing countries have argued that fossil fuels are still the most affordable sources of energy and are indispensable in economic activities that are needed for job generation and poverty alleviation. The costs to public health and the risks posed by climate change, however, are now being factored into the equation. The Philippines, like the rest of the world, is seeing that climate change mitigation is indispensable for sustained development.

High officials went freaky this week from politicking. President Noynoy Aquino purposely avoided Tacloban on the anniversary of its flattening by Super Typhoon Yolanda. Knowing that political foes would heckle him there for slow rehab work, he went elsewhere to twit them for, well, heckling his slowness. Global just makes APT recycle. Worn-out tracks merely are rotated like car tires, not replaced after a prescribed number of hours used. This imperils riders’ lives and limbs, as tracks may crumble and derail trains. Four times the MRT-3 had to stop operations last Sept. when train drivers spotted crushed or cracked rails. Global is a revived firm of a high official of the Philippine National Railways and officers of the Liberal Party, of which Abaya is president. *** High officials went freaky this week from politicking. VP Jojo Binay in a fit of pique backed out of a public debate with tormenting Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, earning him jeers from all over. For, it was he who had challenged Trillanes to a gab joust in the first place, in a fit of pique. Trillanes power-tripped, recalling how Binay had shirked too from a big event in 2007. He stated on national TV, with the coldness of a megalomaniac, that he and fellow-putschists had slipped assault rifles into the Makati city hall in a plot to kill thenPresident Gloria Arroyo, just that Binay got cold feet. The freakiness was but a sign of the political pot about to boil. For weeks the P-Noy admin has been divided by early positioning for the 2016 election by Binay, Trillanes, and Sen. Alan Cayetano. Although VP wannabes Trillanes and Cayetano are Nacionalistas, Binay attributed their accusations of kickbacks and hidden wealth to Liberal presidency

Pissed, P-Noy stated publicly that Binay can leave the Cabinet as housing chief if he dislikes the admin’s drection. Whereupon, Binay promised to be a team player. It’s just a momentary truce. For, Cayetano and Binay’s estranged ally Sen. Koko Pimentel are defying P-Noy’s admonition against accusing Binay in dribs and drabs. Meaning, they will continue to protract their probe of Binay till next year, despite the filing of charges before the Ombudsman. Meanwhile, the Liberal-dominated Senate is likely to clear party mate-Senate President Franklin Drilon of overpricing in Iloilo, precisely because charges already have

been filed with the Ombudsman. Binay sooner or later will break from the P-Noy team and strive to unite the Opposition behind him to clash with the Liberals in 2016. Waiting in the wings, however, is yet another Nacionalista, Bongbong Marcos. Despite all their pretensions to penury, the Marcoses have kept dictator Ferdinand’s huge stolen wealth. With an overflowing war chest, Bongbong just may conquer the divided admin, and retake Malacañang. **** It doesn’t help any that the Comelec is rigging the bidding for 41,800 additional voting machines and the refurbishing of 86,200 old ones. The installation of LRT-2 tracks at MRT-3 is yet another proof of non-upkeep by MRT-3 contractor, Global Epcom Services-Autre Porte Technique. Abaya hired Global-APT in Sept. 2013 at P685,041,298.95 for one year, to service the tracks, trains, signaling system, power supply, and stations. When the deal expired in Sept. 2014, Usec Jose Perpetuo Lotilla extended it for another year. APT is the long-time manpower provider for LRT-2, which buys its own spare parts. At the MRT-3 that Abaya operates, the APT’s role also is manpower, while Global should procure the supplies — which it doesn’t do. Instead of stockpiling parts,

Hacienda Luisita massacre: No justice after 10 years

ovember 16 marked 10 years since the Hacienda Luisita Massacre happened at the controversial landed estate in Tarlac “owned” by the family of President Aquino. Protesters demanding justice to the victims and outright distribution of the estate land to 6,000 farmworker-beneficiaries converge this morning at the Mendiola bridge near Malacanang. They’ll proceed in a caravan for the commemorative rites at the scene of the massacre. That tragic incident’s commemoration ought to focus not only on the long delay in obtaining justice for the massacre victims. It must call attention to 47 years of injustice inflicted by the Cojuangcos on the farmworkers. They should have been given the land, at cost in 1967, per the condition attached to its 1957 purchase with government support by the Jose Cojuangco Sr. family. Moreover, the occasion should recall that two Cojuangco-Aquino presidents — Corazon and her son Benigno III — both promised, when they launched their presidential campaigns (Cory on Dec. 3, 1985 and P-Noy, on Feb. 9, 2010), to distribute the HLI land to its farmworkers. Compliance with the campaign promises of the two has proved unsatisfactory, to say the least. On April 24, 2012 the Supreme Court finally ruled that 4,915 hectares (originally 6,000-plus hectares) should

Satur C. Ocampo

AT GROUND LEVEL be distributed to 6,296 farmworker-beneficiaries. However, the militant farmworkers group AMBALA has protested the manner of distribution via tambiolo (lottery drum) raffle implemented by the Department of Agrarian Reform. Also AMBALA rejects the condition that each beneficiary pay for the land at the 1989 price level — over 30 years — before gaining ownership of just 6,600 square meters. Because the Cojuangcos had benefited from the land for 47 years, when it should have been owned by the farmworkers, AMBALA avers, no payment should be required anymore. Let’s look back to Nov. 16, 2004: Striking farmworkers, demanding the turnover of the land to them, were violently dispersed by combined PNPAFP forces. As the strikers and their supporters resisted the teargas shells and water cannons, successive gunshots rang out. Consequently, seven farmworkers were killed, 121 were injured (32 had gunshot

That tragic incident’s commemoration ought to focus not only on the long delay in obtaining justice for the massacre victims. It must call attention to 47 years of injustice inflicted by the Cojuangcos on the farmworkers. wounds), including 11 children and four elderly men. In the succeeding weeks, eight supporters of the strike were killed: Bishop Alberto Ramento, former supreme bishop of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente; Fr. William Tadena, also of the IFI; Tarlac City councilor Abel Ladera; Ric Ramos, president of the Central Azucarera de Tarlac Labor Union; and four workercommunity leaders. These murders have not been satisfactorily resolved to this day. Meantime, the farmworkers complain of continuing threats and harassments allegedly from the armed security guards, abetted by police and army soldiers deployed in 10 barangays within HLI. Let’s look back farther: The original Hacienda Luisita was a tobacco plantation, awarded in 1882 by the Spanish colonial government to the firm Tabacalera, founded by Antonio Lopez, who named it after his wife Luisita Bru. It was later turned into a sugar plantation. (The sugar mill was built in 1927.) Fearful of the Huk rebellion, in 1957 Tabacalera offered to sell the hacienda plus the sugar mill. Political patronage got into play: President Ramon Magsaysay, the wedding godfather of Ninoy

Aquino and Cory Cojuangco, convinced her father, Jose Cojuangco Sr., to buy the property with government support: 1) the Central Bank deposited part of the country’s dollar reserves with a US bank to guarantee repayment of a loan the bank granted to Cojuangco; and 2) the GSIS granted Cojuangco a P5.9-million loan. In both instances, parallel conditions were set: after 10 years Cojuangco should distribute the land to the “small farmers” (CB), or subdivide it “among the tenants who shall pay the cost thereof under reasonable terms and conditions” (GSIS). But before closing the deal with the GSIS, Cojuangco got the condition amended to “… shall be sold at cost to tenants, should there be any.” Thus, in 1967 Cojuangco refused to hand over HL to the farmworkers by claiming, “There are no tenants on the hacienda, hence no need to distribute the land.” In May 1980, the Marcos dictatorship petitioned the Manila Regional Trial Court to compel the Cojuangco-controlled Tarlac Development Corp. (which managed HL) to yield the land to the Ministry of Agrarian Reform for distribution to the farmers at cost. The lower court granted the

petition, but the Cojuangcos asked the Court of Appeals to reverse the decision. After Mrs. Aquino became president, her government asked the Court of Appeals to rule favorably on the Cojuangco appeal, which the latter promptly did. In 1987 she issued Proclamation 131 and Executive Order 229 defining her agrarian reform program, which included stock distribution option as a mode of implementation instead of land distribution. The SDO was incorporated in RA 6657 (CARP), signed in 1988. Tadeco incorporated HLI to implement the SDO. Its valuation of shares was grossly unequal. The farmworkers’ share of 4,916 hectares, valued at P197 million (P40,000 per hectare), represented only 33% of total shares, whereas the Cojuangcos’ “non-land assets,” valued at P394 million, constituted 67%. In 2003, 5,300 farmworkers petitioned the DAR to revoke the SDO, claiming it had rendered them much poorer. In 2005 the Presidential Agrarian Reform Council granted the petition, but the Cojuangcos contested the revocation at the Supreme Court. Although the SC has unanimously ruled in favor of the farmworkers, today the Cojuangcos continue to question a DAR ruling to distribute some 500 hectares of HLI”s prime land, and have driven out the farmers tilling parts of the land.

GMA Network posts 66 percent increase in Q3 2014 net income (Quezon City, Philippines – November 14, 2014) – Leading broadcast company GMA Network (GMA) reported a net income of P422 million in Q3 2014, up 66% versus the previous quarter. Consolidated revenues for Q3 2014 stood at P3.141 billion, representing an 8% improvement over the P2.915 billion generated in Q2. Both airtime revenues and gross earnings from other businesses posted positive results and contributed to the increase in the topline. Ratings leader GMA Channel 7 grew its sales by 7%, while GMA News TV, the country’s number one news channel, hiked up its earnings by 12%. GMA Radio likewise registered a 15% increase in sales on account of its stronger listenership. Meanwhile, revenues from other businesses led by GMA International, the business unit that manages the operations and distribution of the Network’s three international channels, rose 12% compared to Q2 2014. Total operating expenses slightly increased by 2% to P2.590 billion, as both production cost and General Administrative Expenses (GAEX) climbed 2% and 1%, respectively, in between quarters. Personnel cost was higher mostly from salary adjustments and the amortization of signing and appreciation bonuses in September as part of the Network’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Network ended the third quarter with an EBITDA (Earnings before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization) of P972 million, surpassing the previous quarter’s figure by 31%.

“The third quarter was a promising period for GMA with both our revenues and ratings on the uptrend. We are hoping to sustain this performance until the end of the year as we remain committed to offering superior programs across all genres and platforms,” said GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon.

Business Developments

GMA International recorded higher subscriber figures in Q3 2014 compared to the previous quarter as it continues to reach out to more Filipino households abroad. Subscribers for GMA’s international channels GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Life TV and GMA News TV International grew by 2%, 1% and 8%, respectively. GMA Worldwide, a wholly owned subsidiary that acquires foreign programs for GMA and syndicates Kapuso programs to the international market, sold 718 worth of program hours from 17 titles in the third quarter for telecast in Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Cambodia and Nigeria. GMA New Media, Inc. (NMI) substantially grew its revenues from online advertising by 10% quarter-on-quarter as readership and audience reach of the GMA Network Portal (www.GMANetwork.com) soared in the covered period. GMA News Online, the official news website of GMA News and Public Affairs, performed exceptionally well in the third quarter as it showed a significant increase in both pageviews and unique browsers, according to data from Effec-

tive Measure. The website surpassed the 86.4 million total pageviews generated in Q2 as figures jumped to 153.1 million in Q3. Monthly average unique browsers also increased from 5.6 million to 11.6 million in between quarters. The growth can be attributed in large part to better, more aggressive social media initiatives, which ultimately boosted sales from online advertising. Furthermore, Digify, a subsidiary of NMI, remained at the forefront of new media initiatives as it engineered groundbreaking techno-based solutions for major brands, with some even gaining recognition from local and international award-giving bodies. GMA artist Julie Anne San Jose’s album, Deeper, under GMA Records, debut strongly with over 11,000 digital and physical units sold (according to sales from June 1, 2014 to September 20, 2014), earning it a Gold Record Award. On the regional front, the Network continued to improve and expand its regional coverage with several transmitter upgrades. The signal outcome of the completed restoration and upgrade of the TV relay facilities of TV-8 Coron, which was damaged by Supertyphoon Yolanda in November last year, showed remarkable increases from the signal levels recorded in 2010. Its estimated coverage grew by 45% brought about by the increase in transmitter power (from 100W to 500W) and the installation of a new antenna system. The site relocation of TV-11 Iligan in September 2014 not only expanded the station’s coverage in the provinces

of Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental, but also resulted in improved signal strength and quality and more importantly enabled the carriage of the Northern Mindanao programs originating from GMA Cagayan de Oro.

Ratings

The third quarter saw GMA grabbing the nationwide lead in TV ratings from its closest competitor, according to data from Nielsen TV Audience Measurement. During the covered period, GMA registered a 34.2% total day household audience share in NUTAM, higher than ABS-CBN’s 34.1% and TV5’s 9.9%. GMA also kept its lead in its stronghold areas of Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, where it was ahead of competition by substantial margins. Urban Luzon and Mega Manila account for 77% and 60%, respectively, of the total urban TV households in the entire country. In Urban Luzon, GMA scored 37.8% in total day household audience shares versus ABS-CBN’s 30% and TV5’s 9.2%; while in Mega Manila, GMA posted 38.8%, ahead of ABS-CBN’s 27.7% and TV5’s 9.8%. Meanwhile, GMA’s flagship AM station DZBB became number one in Mega Manila based on Nielsen data from June to September, driven by its aggressive programming efforts. Beyond the numbers, GMA continued to reap awards and recognition from prominent local and international institutions as a testament to its unwavering commitment to merit and excellence.

Roach dares Algieri to attack Pacquiao MANILA, Philippines – Chris Algieri may be the taller guy but Manny Pacquiao is simply the better fighter, said boxing coach Freddie Roach. The 5’10” Algieri will be Pacquiao’s tallest opponent since Antonio Margarito and questions linger about the Filipino’s ability to handle a bigger and more agile fighter. Roach, however, brushed aside talks of Algieri’s height advantage. “When you have a reach advantage? How hard is that to take away?” the temperamental coach said in HBO’s Pacquiao vs Algieri. “If you have a boxer like Manny that’s not so difficult. Just because he’s taller doesn’t make him better.” With 36 more career victories than his American counterpart, Pacquiao is clearly ahead of Algieri in terms of ring experience. Roach added that Algieri, in all of his 20 career wins, has not yet fought anyone of Pacquiao’s caliber. “We’re faster, angle better. We’re going to take him to school,” he said. However, Keith Trimble, Algieri’s co-trainer, made it clear that they are going to replicate the same strategy they used against Ruslan Provodnikov when they take on the eight-division Filipino champion. Trimble added that they did not sign the contract to go toe-to-toe with a hard puncher like Pacquiao. “We know what we’re gonna do, that’s no secret. It’s basically the same thing again as we fought Ruslan. It’s no secret, we’re not gonna sit there and fight him in a phone booth,” he said. “Why are we gonna take away his reach? To do what? To show that he’s got some balls?” Roach countered that Algeri is the challenger and therefore should press the action if he wants to take Pacquiao’s WBO welterweight crown. ABS-CBNnews.com

Filipino film

“EDSA Woolworth”

looks into blended family issues and values REDWOOD SHORES, CA, November 10, 2014 – The holiday season is here and this has been the time that major film studios roll out their biggest and brightest movies to entertain the family. The road to Thanksgiving weekend in cinema history has been filled with big screen offerings for everyone in the household: from the mega-box office performers like “Frozen” and “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” to the hilarious Robin Williams starrer, “Mrs. Doubtfire”, and the quirky Jodie Foster-helmed “Home for the Holidays”. In 2011, ABS-CBN TFC made its intrepid entry into the world of film production with “A Mother’s Story”, also released in November in time for the holidays. This seemingly unassuming, family-oriented movie about an overseas Filipina working mother in the U.S. who sacrifices much for her family in the Philippines surprised many with 18 nominations from the Filipino Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) in 2012. It was also adjudged Best Film at the 2012 Migration Advocacy and Media Awards (MAM) awarded by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas. The FAMAS-nominated star and director of “A Mother’s Story” – versatile comedienne

actress Pokwang and ABS-CBN Global Head of Theatricals John-D Lazatin, respectively - have teamed up anew for TFC@theMovies’ second film, which will open this Friday, on November 14, in 30 theatres in the U.S. and 11 in Canada as another Thanksgiving theatrical offering for the family.

EDSA Woolworth: The story of a “different” kind of family What is EDSA Woolworth? Who is EDSA Woolworth? “EDSA Woolworth is a film that looks into a blended Filipino and American family whose members, at first glance, have everything clashing – personalities, lifestyles, life goals, name it. If you were to match a whole family, this one’s a mismatch. But the journey each member takes to look beyond what doesn’t work and focus on what does – within themselves and with others - is a story that will resonate among many families nowadays. In the end, it’s all about love and values,” said Lazatin. Lazatin continues: “EDSA Woolworth as a character is Pokwang. In her name alone, you can see already two cultures, two races, put together.

It stands out; so do Pokwang’s character and her family in this film, in more ways and reasons than one.” Lazatin explains why he teamed up with Pokwang anew for the movie. “Pokwang is very relatable,” he said. “Whether she plays bizarre comedic roles or straight up drama, viewers identify or empathize with her characters. She brings passion and authenticity into her roles which connect easily with viewers.” With the always brilliant funny girl, Pokwang, in the title role, expect generous moments of laugh-till-it-hurts hilarity in

EDSA Woolworth. Expect some daring, too, especially with her character’s relationship with charming Chad Bauer, played by American actor Lee O’Brian. Their easy chemistry ignites onscreen and brings the audience into their private space, whether to swoon, laugh or cry.

Excellent cast and crew

The interesting family dynamics full of quirks and idiosyncrasies come into full play through the spot-on acting by the very capable cast. The film assembled the dignified Stephen Spohn as Papa Frank Woolworth, the talented Ricci

Chan as Boni Woolworth, and Prince Saruhan as the angstridden twentysomething Paco Woolworth. Enriching (or complicating) their lives are popular “Adobo Nation” co-host Lee Robin Salazar as Patrick and Princess Ryan as Shayne. Lazatin tapped writer-director Noel Nuguit for EDSA Woolworth’s story and screenplay, and relied anew on “A Mother’s Story’s” FAMAS-nominated cinematographer Shayne O. Sarte and editor Mitos R. Briones. The film’s photography captured the beauty of the San Francisco Bay Area which many viewers will be able to identify.

During the two-night blind auditions of the twitter-trending competition, Coach Sarah eagerly turned for a 16-year old daughter of a school administrator in Sultan Kudarat (Mindanao, Philippines), Demie Fresco, who gave her sweet yet powerful rendition of the Regine Velasquez hit, “Ikaw.” Geronimo also pushed her button for French-Filipina singer, Vanessa Monot, who dedicated her performance of Yeng Constantino’s “Pangarap Lang” to her late father who had been supportive of her daughter’s talents. Geronimo was the only coach who turned for Monot while Apl showed his dismay after seeing how beautiful the singer was. Coach Apl even gave Monot a rose and told Geronimo, “I might steal her from you,” a sign of the new twist that is yet to come during the battle rounds. Before joining “The Voice of the Philippines,” Monot shared her talent in different fund-raising events and contests in Europe. In 2013, she organized a fund-raising event in France after the back-toback calamities that struck her hometown of Bohol (Visayas, Philippines). She also joined and then eventually won the Europe leg of TFC’s worldwide singing competition, TFCkat in 2013.

“The Voice of the Philippines” coaches shape dreams as they form their teams Adding to the already powerful team of the Pop Star is the former member of the all-girl group AKA Jam, who joined the first season of the “X-Factor Philippines,” Monique Lualhati. She joined “The

Voice” to help her sister who is in the edge of losing her eyesight because of an in-born condition and sang a heartfelt female version of Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man.” Meantime, coaches Lea, Sarah, and Apl, swooned over by the modern-day telegram singer, Jason James Dy, when he sang Sam Smith’s hit “Stay With Me.” After the three coaches fought to win over Dy, the singer dubbed as Harana King chose to be part of Team Sarah. Coach Sarah now has six members including wakeboarder Daniel Ombao, and four-chair-turner and soulful reggae singer Kokoi Baldo. Meantime, Coach Bamboo also added two new breed of singing talents to his Kamp Kawayan team. The rocker coach continued to prove that he is the king of four-chair turns when the self-proclaimed classic Original Pilipino Music (OPM) lover, Rence Lee Rapanot, joined his team after performing Asin’s “Mateo Singko.” Singing mom Rhoda “Dang” Del Rosario also joined Team Bamboo after her smooth jazz rendition of another Velasquez hit, “Araw-Gabi.” They are joining Person with Disability (PWD) singer, Karlo Mojica,

and four-chair turners, rocker Tanya Ileto Diaz, and senator’s daughter Kai Honasan. Coach Lea, finally added three more singing talents to her team. Former “Pilipinas Got Talent” contender Jem Cubil who stole the hearts of worldwide viewers as well as Salonga’s, with his good-looks and charming voice when he performed a stripped down version of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody.” Salonga even told Coach Sarah, who failed to turn her chair for the charmer, “Sabi sa’yo guwapo eh! (I told you, he’s good-looking!).” Adding to the list of Coach Lea’s team are the former front man of the now defunct rock band, Stonefree and self-confessed Mama’s Boy Miro Valero who gave his own rock twist of The Beatles’ “Ticket to Ride,” and the Broadway Diva’s namesake Leah Patricio, who gave her impressive rendition of the late Whitney Houston hit “I Will Always Love You.” Coach Apl, on the other hand, failed to add a new member for his team and still stands with three members: singing policewoman Janet Cadayona, rocker-daddy Bradley Holmes, and young crooner Mark Cando.

“Parol” or Lantern-Making Contest Aida Champagne , Chairperson of the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival, with Ley Navarro and her Board members, and numerous volunteers, pulled it off again this time with a very successful “Parol-Making Contest” held on Sunday, November 2, 2014 at the Centre Court of Garden city. This contest was inspired by the Empowerment Group of Calgary who sent the bamboo -made parol kits to be sold for $10. The 18 contestants started making their bought kits, made of bamboo star frames and tissue paper of different colours at 11:00 a.m and ended around 4:00 p.m. Some children also participated just for fun although there were no prizes reserved for them. The crowd enjoyed listening to the voices of soloists Bea Jaime and Paul Ong who both received thunderous applause from the audience. Some members of the Winnipeg Glee Club namely: Stephanie Bonifacion, Edmond Madriaga, Francis Romawac, Kaye Begata, and Jackylon Juanillo also delighted the audience with their choral renditions.

Judges were the following: Rod Cantiveros, Chairperson, Maggie-Chan Urbano, Evita Lammawin, Orlando Sanches, and Chester Pangan. Winners of the contest were announced at around 4:00 p.m. They were: Leonie Conchada who received $300 with her shell-decorated lantern; Aura Guevarra with her blue and white lantern, Sherry de Guzman with her white, silver, red coloured lantern receiving $100 as her prize. The theme of the Lantern-Making contest was Christmas in Manitoba. However, looking at all the lanterns, the people couldn’t help but feel nostalgic about Christmas in their home country. horoscope ARIES (March 21-April 19): You’ve never been known to rule with a heavy hand. You always lead sternly, and fairly, but you never make rules just because you can, and you never enforce any thing you don’t absolutely need to. So when you suddenly star t barking orders to one and all, and they act like they don’t quite recognize you, be patient. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You’re dealing with a mixed bag of astrological energies and some even more confusing feelings. On the one hand, you’re craving privacy, but not necessarily to be completely alone. On the other, you’re feeling radical and ex treme — enough to put you in the mood to try any thing at least once. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You’re ready to get the show star ted, and your enthusiasm is catching on with at least one of your closest friends. They may even be star ting to think about doing something similar -- or following in your footsteps, literally. If you combine your plans and make it a group ef for t, it goes much bet ter. CANCER (June 21-July 22): If only you had a couple of ex tra bucks. Doesn’t it feel like that’s the story of your life? Well, don’t feel too bad about it. That tune rings familiar with most of mankind. In your case, however, this situation is about to change. In the meantime, keep on being frugal — no mat ter how much it pains you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): This is one of those days when the universe can’t quite make up its mind about whether to surprise and delight or absolutely astound. Either way, you, of course, will be fine with it. You love unpredictability. You even try to arrange it, sometimes. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): It’s finally time to par ty, and you’re oh, so ready for it. The thing is, you won’t believe what’s going to happen

before you can actually get to it. Of course, it might be fun. All you have to do is what you do best — let go and let the universe handle the details. LIBR A (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Still riding high on that emotional wave? Still wondering how you ever managed without all this ex tra energy you have? Well, you can stay used to it — for a few more days, anyway. The universe will be more than happy to keep you running on high. Of course, the tactics it employs to keep your energy level charged up may be a bit star tling, but hey, you asked for it. And it might be fun. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Last-minute turnarounds have never been on your top ten list of things you just can’t live without, but you might have to learn to love them now — at least temporarily. You have a carefully planned schedule, and you like it that way. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You’ve been on an intellectual and emotional roller coaster for the past week — or rather, weeks. You’re definitely ready for some good, old-fashioned recreation — with no strings at tached, no duties or responsibilities and no need to stand out in a crowd. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): It’s fine astrological weather to be you, but maybe not so much fun for your less flexible friends. So while you’re totally loving the fact that the last thing on ear th you’d ever expect is what’s about to happen, they’re looking worried — and not at all happy about it. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Ready for an instant replay of yesterday’s excitement? With any luck you answered ‘yes,’ because that’s exactly what’s coming: Last-minute changes, sudden announcements and surprising news. Take a deep breath and don’t get comfor table — a whirlwind of activity is upon you. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar 20): You’re trying to arrange a surprise for a dear one but they may be on to you. Still you shouldn’t give up and tell them all about it, you should pretend to. You can still manage to plan and execute the per fect shocker, if you let a couple of well-orchestrated hints slide.

will be making plans well in advance as to make sure it is a productive trip. For many years, I have met with politicians from the Philippines who visit Canada. Building solid relationships with the Philippines and its people is very important to me and I believe the opportunities to expand the relationship between Canada and the Philippines are there -- we just need to explore and encourage them. heart. Why? Simply because they will one day see God. Now this sounds really simple, doesn’t it, because all that you need is a pure heart. I don’t know about you but there are a lot of days when my heart seems more polluted than pure. I still get angry when someone cuts me off when I’m driving on our street. I get frustrated when my best plans are not carried out. I still get jealous when I hear of others whose achievements out shine my own. How can we become pure in heart? What do we have to do? I have some extremely bad news for you: there is nothing you can do to make your heart pure! The good news is that God is the one who cleans the heart and all that you need to do is ask Him. King David asked God for this exact thing: “Create in me a pure heart and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10) God granted David’s request and gave him a clean heart. He can do the same for you; all you need to do is ask Him. An essential part of preparing for Christmas involves re-arranging of our priorities. Jesus said, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33) Just as we arranged our homes, schedules and other aspects of our lives for Christmas, God wants us to arrange our hearts for Christmas. His desire is for you to make more room for His Son in the room of your heart.

to the Philippines that year, he took the time to make arrangements on my behalf. Earlier this month, Vic contacted my office to let me know that the Congressman was going to be in Winnipeg. His visit happened to during a break week in Ottawa which meant I was able to spend a day with him. The day started off with a meeting at my office where we talked about the economic and social impact of immigration from the Philippines to Canada and, in particular, Winnipeg. That was followed by a tour of Carte International where many of the workers are of Filipino heritage. We enjoyed the tour and had the opportunity to chat with several workers who all explained how they ended up working there and how they looked at their work as a career job. Most were already there for years and were happy to comment on their home life and lifestyle. After lunch, we took a tour of one of Winnipeg’s biggest employers, Maple Leaf. Our first stop was at the human resources department where the HR staff emphasized how the company looks to the Filipino community as the driving force of their company today. They expressed how valuable the workers are and much they appreciate the work ethics and friendly nature of their Filipino heritage workforce which numbers into the hundreds. In March they hope to go to the Philippines to recruit more workers for their two facilities in Manitoba that employ well over 3,000 people. The tour itself was great as we watched how pork was being processed to the point where it was being shipped out for sale to consumers.

Congressman Guanlao and I were both able to learn and get a better understanding of a wide variety of issues as a result of both tours and the talks we had. One of the greater benefits of the Congressman’s visit is that he and I now have a stronger relationship. He is going back to the Philippines with a much better understanding of Canada and a better sense of the issues here. The Congressman knows that I will be in the Philippines in January of 2016 and we

a blink, “Congratulations, you have successfully inserted your ballot.” The PCOS malfunctioned in 2013. Neither the precinct count nor the national canvass was completed, so no random manual audit could be done post-balloting. Transmission of votes bogged down. Worse, the PCOS showed a consistent 6030-10 percent trend for admin, opposition, and independent senatorial candidates in all precincts, districts, provinces, and regions. Worst of all, Smartmatic broke the first provision of the Automated Election Law in supplying 72,000 PCOS units in 2010 and 14,200 more in 2013. That is, it hid the fact that it did not develop, so did not own, the PCOS operating

When we make this extra room in the heart, God blesses us with more of Christ. It is then that the blessings of God begin to rapidly flow into our lives and overflow into the lives of others. When we put Christ in the center of our lives, everything else comes together. When Jesus made this statement of seeking the kingdom of God first, he was giving the antidote for worry. Jesus makes it clear that if we are to succeed in life, our focus must be on God first. We become so busy celebrating the season that we totally miss the reason for the season! We become centered on shopping for the right gifts and forget to tell others of God’s perfect gift. We are not prepared for Christmas until our hearts are clean and our priorities are in line. The wonder of Christmas can come alive for you in brand new ways if you will open your heart and allow God to prepare you for Christmas. Praying that your Christmas this year will be Merry indeed! Let me take this opportunity to invite you to our Annual Christmas Praise and Worship Night on Saturday, December 6. Doors will be opened at 5:30PM, program starts at 6PM. software. Dominion Election Systems of Canada did. That’s why Smartmatic also broke a second provision of the law: it did not submit the source code for the past two elections. For this, Smartmatic must be blacklisted, as the Citizens for Clean, Credible Election suggests. But Comelec chief Sixto Brillantes and his six commissioners are rushing to give the P7-billion resupplyrefurbish deal to Smartmatic by Dec. 4. This, although he and two commissioners are to retire in two months on Feb. 2, 2015. The members of the bidding committee seem to have been given special instructions to accommodate Smartmatic. They are stern in dealing with other bidders, but extra nice to Smartmatric execs. Their smile is unmistakably that of lips that have been greased before.

What is mortgage insurance? Mortgage insurance pays off the amount left owing on your mortgage if you die. Here are some facts you should know before deciding on how best to ensure your mortgage is paid off in the event of your death:

uying a new home is an exciting experience. It represents your hopes and plans for the future. For most Canadians, it also means having a mortgage and making regular mortgage payments. Often the financial institution you have your mortgage with will offer you mortgage insurance. Is it the right thing to do? Does it offer the protection you need?

• The amount covered by mortgage insurance decreases as the amount owing on your mortgage decreases. Premiums don’t decrease, they remain the same. • The insurance proceeds are paid directly to the financial institution. • You may not be able to take your insurance with you if you move your mortgage to a new mortgage company. This may mean having to provide current medical and health evidence to become insured. • You may not be able to insure both you and your spouse if the mortgage is registered in only one person’s name. There are alternatives Having your own individual life

insurance policy offers you the protection of covering your family’s financial needs including your mortgage, in the event of naming a beneficiary of your choice. Your family may decide to use the benefit to pay down a low interest mortgage and invest the rest. Or they may need the funds to cover other expenses. The choice will be theirs. Some other points to consider • Transferring your mortgage from one lender to another will not affect your coverage. • You can choose between term insurance and permanent insurance. • The amount of coverage you choose can include your mortgage and other debts as well as the other financial needs your family may have. • You can insure both you and your spouse, even if the mortgage is registered in one spouse’s name. other debts. Think about future obligations you may have – your children’s education, your plans for retirement. What would happen to your plans if you become ill? While life insurance covers your family’s needs when you die, there are other types of insurance that could help you if you become ill. Disability insurance provides an ongoing, monthly income if you should sustain a disability and were unable to work. Critical illness insurance pays a lump sum amount if you are diagnosed with an illness covered by your policy, even if you are able to return to work. You can use your benefit as you choose – including paying down your mortgage and debts. I can help you take a close look at your needs and decide on the type of coverage that’s right for you.
