Week 7- Constructing Environments Journal entry This week we took a trip as a class to Frankston to visit a construction site, which is a project of our constructing tutor Warwick. The house was relatively large with accentuated wooden beams running through the structure creating the main feature of the house. Wood was the predominant material in the house, almost always exposed giving the house a warm and rustic feel.

PVC piping encases the wires; this creates a feature of them as they run along the roof and down the beams of the house.

Existing wooden beams. Some of these beams had to be replaced due to rotting. (Building constructed in 1977) Supporting wooden frame. The original frame was very rough and needed to be fixed up. Spacing needed to be rectified.

Secondary metal supports.

Windows that bring the view inside from all areas of the room.

Week 7- Constructing Environments Journal entry Steel beams have been added to the wooden framework to pick up the support of the building.

The wooden posts have been removed to reveal a panoramic view without the visual interruption of the post. This is possible because the weight of the posts used to support the building is now taken by the steel beams and posts that have been added.

The house uses a post and frame structure. Post Frame Infill utalises wooden stud framing (Ching 2008)

Wooden framework. Horizontal beams and vertical posts are used to support both roof and floor loadsdown to the foundations (Ching, 2008)

Week 7- Constructing Environments Journal entry The renovation to the house wasn’t overly huge however the house had been stripped back for work to be done improving the house as a whole to keep everything matching and updated. The building uses wood a lot which creates a contrast to the transparency of the glass which is also heavily utilised in the building to create a seamless transition between the indoors and out doors, displaying the stunning ocean view and natural garden in the yard. I personally really liked the house. The two stories are so open to the ocean views, which is a stunning feature. The use of exposed wood is also a really beautiful feature of the house.
