RB Villa is a retirement house located in Dalung, Bali. To serve its function as a house aiming to provide tranquility for it’s user, the land is located in a quieter area in central Bali with a local Balinese neighborhood. However, the location does not have any potential external view. Therefore, creating internal view that can be a visual focal point becomes the design’s objective.

Surrounded by local houses gives another challenge on how the building’s facade responds to its surrounding. Humbling down the front facade overlooking the main road access is one of the solution to avoid creating a massive and obstructive building when placed in an organic Balinese neighborhood. The design also aims to create a sense of different impression and unique experience through a defined circulation connecting each of the area.

Given the natural terrain, the land has a mild slope starting from the front to the back of the land’s boundary. The rectangular shape of the land with lengthwise towards the back can be tricky when placing the building mass. Studying further of functional rooms grouping is required to decide how many masses should be placed on ground and how many levels should the building provide.

From the front side, the design aims to give a ‘humble’ look to appreciate local houses surrounding it. Therefore, creating a hint of stacking boxes by varying building’s height instead of placing 2 storeys building on the front side is considered.

Integration of buildings differing from each of it’s function is connected through a defined circulation path, offering different experience throughout each of the spaces. Considering the space hierarchy (from public to private), the buildings are placed from public to private areas from the front to the back.

Creation of centralized view inside the land is optimized due to lack of visual accessibility outwards. Therefore, each of the buildings is assured to have openness overlooking the garden.

To create warmth for the user, selections of fabric with neutral colours complementing with the architectural materials are also carefully picked.

Overall, the interior aims to bring outside elements inwards, creating a sense of continuity and unity between the exterior and interior.

Vegetation Concept

Vegetation plays an important role in creating thermal and visual comfort. Not only it creates visual aesthetics with natural color scheme, but also it helps maintain a healthy balance in the surroundings including air quality, ecology, and natural resources.

Selection of plants considers the distinct species in Bali that reflects tropical ambience both to strengthen the tropical house character and accesibilty to provision.

With several water feature in a form of fish pond, the landscape combines water element with Pulmeria Alba as it’s focal point. To complemet the lengthwise pool, the side garden is incorporated with a set of vegetative combination; Ravenala Madagascariensis, Lycoris Radiata, and Strelitzia.

Design Reference

ER House is a retreat villa located in Bumbak, Bali. With the land size of 600 m2, the design aims to give a spacious garden as its pivotal view aspect from the inside. Along with the elongated land shape, it comes with a large ricefield terrace across the land, giving it a potential view aspect if elevated. Overall, the concept is contemporary tropical house with a touch of Balinese accents.

The land is surrounded with sprawling newly built villas as the location is quite strategic for tourists. Therefore, in order to keep the private area secluded, it is placed at the back of the land, with service area placed at the front side.

Design direction comprises of the above combination, creating comfort with Balinese local materials in combination with contemporary horizontal geometry as it’s integral.
