P H O TO A R K P H OTO G R A P H S B Y J O E L S A R TO R E National Geographic photographer JOEL SARTORE has visited 40 countries in his multi-year quest to create a photo archive of global biodiversity. To date, he has completed intimate portraits of more than 6,300 species. Photo Ark aims to document every species currently living in the world’s zoos and wildlife sanctuaries, inspire action through education, and help save animals facing extinction in the wild by supporting on-theground conservation projects. Museums and zoos worldwide are hosting Photo Ark exhibitions to raise awareness. Exhibitions are currently touring in U.S. and international museums and galleries. globally available

Joel Sartore is a photographer, speaker, author, teacher, conservationist, National Geographic fellow, and a regular contributor to National Geographic magazine. He started the Photo Ark project in his hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska. Since then, Sartore has created a stunning photo archive featuring portraits of thousands of species. We chatted with Sartore about this incredible project and his love of photography and wildlife. Turn the page for more from Joel.

Five Minutes with Joel Sartore (continued) What is your goal for the project? To photograph every animal species on earth in order to get the public to care about the extinction crisis, while there’s still time to save species. What sparked your love of photography and/or animals? My parents both loved nature. My father took me hunting, fishing, even mushroom hunting, all through the year as I was growing up in Nebraska. My mother appreciated the flowers, birds, and squirrels that graced our suburban yard and the town park behind our house. Between the two of them, I’ve never thought of nature as anything other than a joyful place and a vitally important part of life.
Photographing live animals can be challenging. What are some of the most interesting things that have happened during this process? I suppose what would be most interesting to your readers would be the times that the shoots were out of the ordinary. Most of these shoots go extremely smoothly because the animals have been around people all their lives, but sometimes the critters do “have their way” with my backgrounds and sets. How long do you think it will take to photograph all 12,000 species?? We’re at 6,300 now, so another 10 years or so, maybe 15. What kind of camera do you use/ prefer? Why? I use Nikon D810 and D5 cameras because they’re durable as can be and sealed up against dirt and moisture.

I’ve been a Nikon guy all my life because their cameras have never failed me, and I’ve been in some very tough places. Being a National Geographic photographer sounds so exotic! Can you identify a few favorite locations or assignments?
Zoos worldwide are hosting Photo Ark exhibitions. These exhibitions highlight important conservation work taking place in zoos, aquariums, and wildlife sanctuaries around the world. Each exhibition features large-format prints in eight-foot-tall kiosks, as well as a grid of many more images to showcase the range of species in the Photo Ark. Opportunities are available to customize some of the kiosks for zoos where Joel Sartore has photographed. globally available

Antarctica was my favorite place by far. I went on a National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions trip and it was just amazing; pristine and full of towering blue icebergs and penguins everywhere. Besides that, Uganda was a treat in that I got to do an assignment on the wildlife of Africa’s Albertine Rift, including lions that sleep in the trees and mountain gorillas. His latest stories for National Geographic magazine explore the importance of these predators to our ecosystem and the dangers they face for survival. Skerry has made 14 trips all over the world to photograph a multitude of shark species, including tiger sharks, great whites, oceanic whitetips, and shortfin makos.

SPINOSAURUS LO S T G I A N T O F T H E C R E TA C E O U S Over 50 feet long, 20 feet high, and weighing in at six tons, Spinosaurus is the largest predatory dinosaur to ever roam the Earth. This bus-sized dino’s extraordinary features include a crocodileshaped skull and seven-foot spines forming a sail along its back. In this exhibition, visitors can explore a full-sized skeletal model and genuine
dinosaur fossils as well as learn about the latest technologies modern paleontologists use. Visitors can travel to the Sahara to discover the origins of this rare African dinosaur and the mysterious journey that led to its rediscovery by National Geographic Explorer and paleontologist NIZAR IBRAHIM, with the help of fellow Explorer PAUL SERENO and clues from paleontologist ERNST STROMER’s historical records. globally available

MONSTER FISH IN SEARCH OF THE LAST RIVER GIANTS interactive exhibition tackles the big challenges facing these remarkable fish and their struggle to survive and thrive. This exhibition contains five large, life-size models, some more than 14 feet long, an interactive fish market, a field research station, fishing and cultural objects from around the world, and tactile and digital interactives.
Stunning life-size sculptures, video installations, and evocative illustrations introduce visitors to more than 20 species of fish—each at least six feet long and 200 pounds. Visitors will embark on a global journey to storied river basins with explorer and ecologist ZEB HOGAN on his quest to find, research, and protect freshwater giants. From dispelling legends of man-eating fish to examining the role of sport fishermen as environmental stewards, this

THE WORLD IN BLACK AND WHITE This exhibition presents the work of 17 National Geographic photographers working between 1880 and 1950, selected from the image archive. Through their travels across the United States, Clifton R. Adams, J. Baylor Roberts, Edwin L. Wisherd, And B. Anthony Stewart recorded the lives of ordinary people from the 1920s to the 1940s. Dr. Joseph F. Rock documented the lives of Buddhists in China and Tibet. Volkmar K. Wentzel took photos of African tribes. George Shiras III was the first to take night photographs of wildlife. Maynard Owen Williams documented his travels in Paris and in India. Alexander Graham Bell, second president of the National Geographic Society, took photos of his early 20th-century flight experiments.
