Drama Rehearsal Space

Hugh Bonneville (d, 1981), is already supporting the planned refurbishment of the Old Music School into a vibrant new hub for drama rehearsal and classes. He says:

Julius Caesar, Junior play 2013

“The seeds of my ambition to become a professional actor were sown during my time at Sherborne. From my one line in Henry VIII in my first year, to the lead in The Government Inspector in my last term, I am forever grateful for the introduction the School gave me to what was to become my career. I have set the ball rolling with a gift. I hope this might encourage you and others to donate whatever you can to this initiative.”

The Foundation is now seeking a sum of £10,000 to complete the project and enable drama to continue to thrive at Sherborne. Travel and Tour Bursaries

This fund helps boys on bursarial support, or those with limited means who are talented academics, musicians or sportsmen to go on tours that will further enhance their experience at School and beyond. These boys gain immeasurably from their experiences on such trips.

60 boys have already been supported over the past 8 years, and we are looking to generate £7,500 this year to enable us to help even more boys. Sports Coaching Fund

The Sports Coaching Fund ensures that all sports have a real opportunity to progress and improve their provision. The Fund allows recruitment of outside professional coaches necessary to run all of our sport in a rigorous manner to all participants at all levels. This includes utilising the services of a conditioning coach who works with those sportsmen who require this expertise in order to progress to the highest level and become elite sportsmen.

The Foundation is seeking £45,000 per annum for the Sports Coaching Fund. Wherever it is Needed Most

If you do not wish to support a specific project, but would prefer the Foundation Trustees (all of whom are supporters) to direct your gift at their discretion to wherever it is needed most, then please let us know.

Your Support Counts

If just 12 OS, parents or friends of Sherborne were to give £20 per month (with Gift Aid) for three years we could completely fund the outstanding amount needed for the Drama rehearsal space.

A gift of £400 (or £33 per month) would enable one boy already on bursarial support to benefit from a valuable sporting, musical or academic trip.

Alternatively, a single Leadership gift of £1,000 would provide a significant amount towards the cost of a bursary for one deserving boy, or towards the drama project. Gifts of over £1,000 are acknowledged in the Chairmans’ Society and donors will be invited to the Leadership dinner. Remember, if you make your gift tax-effectively it can be worth even more to us and, if you are a higher rate tax payer, cost you less. Please participate in this year’s Annual Fund.

ANNUAL FUND PROJECTS FOR 2012/13

Providing Academic Enrichment

in Sherborne’s future

The Annual Fund Challenge

In 2011-12, more than 500 Old Shirburnians, parents and other friends of the School participated in the Annual Fund to raise more than £169,000. During 2012-13, the challenge is to continue this momentum and, with your help, to raise at least £150,000.

“In these times of challenge, we should be proud of all that we can achieve together each year as part of Sherborne’s Annual Fund”

Robin Leach, Annual Fund Committee Member, OS (b, 1973), former parent and Governor.

This year, the Annual Fund Committee, made up of Old Shirburnians, parents and other friends of the School, urges you to support one of this year’s important projects which are listed in this leaflet. The telephone campaign offers young OS the opportunity to speak with other Old Shirburnians and discuss the School. In addition, they will be able to answer any questions you may have about the projects outlined here and will hope to encourage you to help us achieve this year’s Annual Fund goal.

Widening Access Headmaster’s Bursaries

The Foundation has been supporting bursaries for fifteen years and has supported, or is currently supporting, a total of seven boys through the School. This year’s Annual Fund supports a new initiative from the School by funding a regular Sixth Form bursary for boys who the Headmaster feels would benefit from a Sherborne education but who are unable to afford it; these are known as the Headmaster’s Awards.

These boys are both successful in their academic studies and capable of benefitting from all aspects of Sherborne life. The first of these was awarded in 2012 and we are now seeking to do the same for a Sixth Form entrant in 2014. Each Award requires approximately £64,000 for a boy to board, with some additional expenses covered, for the full two years of the Sixth Form.

Bertie Portal, actor and Atlantic rower

Several mornings each term, the boys gather in the Big School Room to hear from a variety of speakers, each covering a subject that enhances their knowledge beyond the classroom and aims to broaden their world view. The programme has recently included an Olympic gold medallist, a human rights lawyer, a City banker and a global explorer, all of which offer the boys opportunities to contemplate experiences outside of Sherborne and inspire them both now and in the future.

To support the Programme, we are aiming to raise £35,000 per annum. Ed Moorhouse Fund

Edward Moorhouse (f, 1990) was a Shirburnian who had a glittering Sherborne career as an academic, actor, chapel warden and playwright. Subsequently he was a successful Morehead scholar at Chapel Hill University in North Carolina, USA. Sadly, Edward died from cancer in 2006.

A Fund has been established in Edward’s memory to enable Sherborne’s ‘high flying’ pupils to undertake enrichment courses which develop their academic abilities and enhance applications to universities in the UK and overseas. Such pupils would also be encouraged to apply for MoreheadCain Scholarships with Chapel Hill University.

The aim is to create a Fund over 3 years worth £25,000 in order to support the boys on these courses for at least 10 years and perhaps into the longer term.

Foundation Fellows

For the academic year, 2012-13, the Foundation Fellows fund allowed two high flying Princeton graduates, Colleen Kent and Michael Weylandt (pictured above) to enhance the education of the boys and help at the School for a year. Two further Fellows have already been recruited for the next academic year and, as part of the Annual Fund the Foundation is seeking to raise the £43,000 needed to support this rolling programme.

“Over my year as a Foundation Fellow, I’ve tried to introduce my students to the wide applicability of mathematical thought, drawing on my own experience as a scientific researcher, financial trader, and programmer. Few of them are likely to become mathematicians themselves, but I hope that all of them learned new ways to engage with their studies and, more importantly, with problems in any field they may choose to pursue. There’s great beauty and power in the fact that the same mathematics describes the evolution of financial markets and the swirling of milk in a tea cup – hopefully I’ve given them a glimpse of it.” Michael Weylandt, Foundation Fellow
