THANKS FROM THE CHAIRMAN Inspiration; this word comes up time and again to describe what boys gained from the projects the Foundation supported last year.

JOHN POCOCK Chairman of the Foundation Trustees (f, 1978)

From academic festivals and overseas trips to speakers and sports coaching, boys, and pupils from the wider Sherborne school community have been inspired by high profile individuals, unique experiences and new opportunities to aim higher and achieve more. The nature of your support has been wide-ranging, from regular gifts and legacy pledges to time

volunteered and giving access to special meeting venues. Whatever your contribution it has made a difference, potentially a life-changing one for some boys, and we are truly grateful for it. This year’s Donor Update not only describes the outcomes of recent support but sets out the Annual Fund projects for this academic year. I hope you find satisfaction in both the reading and the participation.

THANK YOU

FOR BEING A PART OF IT

RECENT PROJECTS

Music School Update Our Music School is now six years old and its support of music at Sherborne goes from strength to strength, as you will see from the comments below. A base for daily practise and rehearsal, for hosting masterclasses and concerts, for teaching and socialising, the building is so much more than its component parts. It is an inspiration to all who make music in it – from jazz impresarios to orchestral musicians – and has undoubtedly played its part in our being named one of the best nonspecialist schools in music. We enjoy every moment in the building and remain grateful indeed to those who enabled such a transformational development.

James Henderson - Director of Music

Changing Lives In the words of a mother of a recent leaver...”Four years ten months ago we made one of the biggest and most difficult decisions of our lives – to send our boy away to boarding school to take up a music scholarship. Sherborne School have given us back a confident, well rounded, self-effacing young man who has achieved such great things and totally fulfilled his potential, having had the time of his life, and is ready to go out in the world and make a difference. Bursting with pride is an understatement, and so incredibly proud to say that my son is now an Old Shirburnian”.

Drama School Update In the last year, the Drama School has been getting a lot of use. Academic classes continue to take place at the same time as practical work and the popularity of Drama means the building is bursting with enthusiasm and energy. We continue to value this facility and look forward to it potentially being further developed in future to cater for the many boys at Sherborne who wish to study the theatre and to act. Ian Reade - Head of Drama

Academic Festivals Hearing from leading academics and professionals in person, with the chance to question and interact with them, is core to academic enrichment at Sherborne. Through academic festivals, the School aims to inspire thinking beyond exam specifications and school textbooks and develop a new generation of leaders and world-changers. Not just among its own boys, but across Sherborne’s senior schools whose 11-18 year old pupils are invited to participate.

The Sherborne Sessions 2016

The Science Festival

The Science Festival in October 2015 brought eminent professors and doctors – including Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt, Principal of Jesus College, Oxford, and Professorial Research Fellow in the Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford – to the School to help almost 2,500 of Sherborne’s young people imagine and prepare for an unknowable but unstoppable future. Specialists in the theory of social machines, fusion energy, rare earth metals, space exploration, artificial intelligence and more took part.

It made me realise that science was limitless, that there are endless possibilities and dreams can be materialised”. Malhaar Shah (4a)

Over twenty writers (including journalist Rachel Cooke above), many of them award-winners from genres including the novel, screenwriting, comedy, journalism, poetry and biography, inspired many boys and other Sherborne pupils ‘how to write’ over a five-day literary festival. We are grateful to main sponsor The Charles Skey Charitable Trust and to those who took up the new opportunity to become a session naming sponsor: Rodney Short; Justin Douglas; Flotilla Media. I am delighted that the Charles Skey Charitable Trust has been able to support The Sherborne Sessions as the support and encouragement of youth is one of the areas we wish to promote. The varied programme will have been inspirational not only to those wishing to pursue a career in literature or the arts but will also, I trust, have encouraged all, wherever their career takes them, to maintain engagement with literature and the arts which will result in a more complete, rounded and fulfilling life.” Martyn Leggett - The Charles Skey Charitable Trust

Inspirational Speaker Programme

The lecture programme last year presented a varied array of speakers for the boys. At The Steven Lawn Memorial Lecture, given by Falklands’ veteran Simon Weston, boys heard about the horror of this war and its devastating personal aftermath, including Simon not being recognised by his own mother. Lord Holmes of Richmond, the blind Paralympian, responsible for the runaway success of the London Games, spoke movingly about the Paralympic movement. Ian Keable – an OS – showed us some brilliant magic and talked about the history of the art. Andrew Oates spoke about the difficulties of treating dementia; and we had a powerful talk on Muslim extremism from Dr Usama Hasan, an imam from the Quilliam Foundation. In the final term, we heard talks from Sir James Perowne on Shackleton on the anniversary of that fateful expedition; from comedy mathematician Matt Parker on why maths is so cool; and from Mitch Grant, over from Sydney, who talked to us about recovering from serious injury as a teenager and running his own fitness centres. Tim Dawson - Head of Scholarship

Foundation Fellows

Having already welcomed a total of eight Foundation Fellows to Sherborne from Princeton, last year was a ‘gap’ year whilst a wider search was conducted for an excellent candidate for 2016-17 to support creative development. We were delighted to discover and engage Carson Einarsen from Savannah College of Art and Design as a postgraduate in TV and film. With his passion for and experience in film study and production, and also of fine art and photography, we look forward to a year of exceptional creativity and activity as he supports the Art and Photography departments, whilst adding extra colour and culture to School life with a variety of US-themed co-curricular activities.

BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS Eight boys have now experienced the life-changing opportunity of an education at Sherborne thanks to bursarial support from the Foundation and last year we continued to build funds towards supporting our ninth beneficiary in 2017-18. Bursary funding also assists boys whose families have fallen on hard times to remain at the School when they would otherwise have to leave.

Travel and Tour Bursary Fund

Since the last Donor Update at the end of 2014, five boys have benefited from assistance enabling them to participate in the 2015 rugby tour.

Peter Currie Commemoration Fund

In memory of Peter Currie, long-serving and highly respected master at Sherborne, this new Fund was set up last year to support boys wanting to undertake trips in areas that Peter himself loved, such as languages, hockey, golf and music, and, where possible, also to support deserving Digby boys on any School trips they wished to undertake. Twelve boys have benefited over the period, including support for two boys on hockey trips to Barcelona; six boys on a choir trip to Prague; three on a swing band tour of Barbados; and one boy on a language trip to Spain.

My son is at Sherborne thanks to a sports scholarship with a bursary. He was spotted by

Sherborne coaches at a prep school match and encouraged to attend the scholarship day.

He got in and has never looked back. He grew up whilst on a sports tour partly funded by the Foundation and has achieved great success both for himself and the School, making this a mutually successful partnership. We are so thankful that the School saw my son’s

potential and has developed it so well with so much support and advice, coupled with his own hard work. We as a family are eternally grateful for the Foundation’s support and to those whose generosity has allowed my son fully to develop his talent.”

Sports Coaching Fund

The Sports Coaching Fund, as generously provided by the Sherborne School Foundation, has again enabled the boys to access high level coaching in a variety of different sports. Of particular note this year has been the extra tennis coach provided to work with the lower years, and the athletics coaches who have helped a number of boys with their throwing and jumping skills. In addition, the provision for Strength and Conditioning coaches has ensured that boys across the school are suitably prepared physically to help prevent injury as well as maximising potential.

From the 3rd form through to the Sixth Form, boys have benefited from time spent with experts who are able to help them make the slight modifications to their tactical and technical abilities and thereby improve their overall performance. Outstanding individual achievements include one boy matching the Under-17 School hurdles record and seven boys winning medals, including two Golds in the HMC Judo Nationals Competition. We are grateful for the difference that gifts to the Sports Coaching Fund makes.

David Guy - Director of Sport

THE FUTURE

Strategic Plan 2016-21

The School’s development is being guided by a new five-year Strategic Plan drawn up by Headmaster, Dr Dominic Luckett after his wide consultation with staff. The Plan is based on the fundamental ethos and values that have characterised Sherborne over the centuries – but encourages us to innovate and develop imaginative solutions to the exciting challenges presented by education in and for the 21st century. We hope over the coming year to introduce many of our donors to some of the projects that are outlined in the Strategic Plan and I look forward to gaining the views and support of many of you. We are grateful as a Foundation for your continuing loyalty and hope we can continue to increase the number of supporters by delivering forwardthinking projects, ensuring you are kept informed about the plans for the School. I look forward to meeting many more OS, parents and other friends of Sherborne in the near future to present and discuss our ambitious plans, and at forthcoming thank you events to recognise your generosity. Adrian Ballard - Head of Foundation

Planning for the Bow Society’s 20th Anniversary

The Bow Society is for those who remember the School in their Will, a meaningful and important gift.

In 2018, the Bow Society will celebrate 20 years since it was founded and named after Sherborne coal merchants Charles and Louisa Bow, who left the School their house and land – worth almost £1million – enabling the establishment of Sherborne International, a key part of the School today. The Society’s membership has grown from 16 members in 1998 to 182 members now. They include OS, parents and other friends who have generously pledged a legacy to the School and made that commitment clear to the Foundation. A small working group, including Bow Society members, will spend next year planning for some special celebratory events in 2018, aiming to increase membership to 200+ by the end of this 20th anniversary year.
