EQUIPMENT FOR GEOGRAPHY Accelerometor

LED MICROSCOPES FOR BIOLOGY £3,100

£3,000

“The ground accelerometer would measure live Tectonic Data within the department. The accuracy of the instrument would allow us to detect the smallest earth tremor. These measurements would support both Geography and Geology at the School and give the boys a wider insight into plate tectonics.”

Digital Weather Station

£250

“A new class set of microscopes would provide standardisation across our laboratories, enabling all boys to have access to the best equipment. The units themselves provide excellent clarity of image and the LED light source is both energy efficient and allows the units to be charged, removing the need for trailing electrical wires. Their use is a tremendously helpful part of GCSE

“A weather station would provide real-time data for the boys to track and compare with national sources. Meteorology forms a significant element of the Sixth Form programme and interpreting our own data, projected in live to the boys in and around the School, would greatly support their learning. The data would also be of great value for fieldwork projects.” Tom Mason Head of Geography

Biology, since cell structure is very important and at A level, detailed microscope work forms a component of the exam in which students must prepare a slide and draw what they see. The addition of the units to the Biology Department would therefore be hugely beneficial.” Jon-Paul Manning Head of Biology

Providing Academic Enrichment

FOUNDATION FELLOW

STEINWAY PIANOS FOR MUSIC

£27,500

“The Foundation Fellow offers us the opportunity to draw upon additional skills and specialisms in both the Art and Design Technology departments. Take, for instance, Carson Einarsen, a film maker who inspired our boys with his infectious, can-do approach to all things creative. Our current Foundation Fellow, Phivi Spyridonos, is a talented Illustration graduate who is passing on to our boys her own meticulous and precise draughtsmanship. Whilst all very different, what unites our Fellows is their enthusiasm, energy and ability to connect and communicate a passion for their subject. This in turn inspires, encourages and develops our boys’ creativity and individual practice. The key to this relationship is that the boys see the Foundation Fellow not so much as a teacher but more as an Artist in Residence, an approachable figure who can often give an alternative and stimulating perspective. Over the years, they have proved to be an invaluable addition to the creative life of the School.”

James Wright

Director of Art

£27,500 “Sherborne was recently named the best independent school in the country for Music by The Week magazine. As one of the measures to maintain this excellence, the Music Department seeks to lease a stock of Steinway pianos for the next ten years, allowing Sherborne to become a prestigious ‘All Steinway School’.” James Henderson Director of Music

Enhancing Co-Curricular Provision

500 NEW HYMN BOOKS FOR THE CHAPEL £4,700

“As the current Chapel hymn books approach the end of their serviceable life, it would be really fantastic if the kindness and generosity of Annual Fund supporters could make it possible for the current boys to feel inspired by a hymnody that better reflects the beauty and wonder of the surroundings of the School Chapel.” The Revd Dr David Campbell Chaplain

SHOOTING EQUIPMENT £17,500

“Shooting is a highly technical sport which, once the basic skills are learnt, becomes a discipline of inner awareness, personal control, psychology, physical fitness, attention to minute details and single-minded focus. With both team and individual competitions, it is truly a sport for all. The School equipment needs further investment to enable boys to reach their full potential and such

investment would be hugely beneficial and greatly appreciated.” Paul Wilson School Staff Instructor Combined Cadet Force

REDEVELOPMENT OF THE CAREERS DEPARTMENT SPACE £20,000

“Whilst the advice given by the Careers Department is second-to none, the environment in which it is delivered is in need of considerable updating. We would like to create a modern, bright and upbeat environment where the boys will feel comfortable and at home, and with new technology at their fingertips. The aim is to provide the right space where plans for the boys’ lives beyond Sherborne can be developed, refined and supported.” Tom Rimmer Assistant Head (Sixth Form)

Ensuring Access

BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS Each year’s Annual Fund provides the opportunity to support deserving boys who would not otherwise be able to attend the School and to support current pupils whose parents have fallen on hard times. Funding is also sought for all-round Scholarships to attract and support boys of outstanding talent.

TRAVEL AND TOUR BURSARIES ÂŁ7,500

In recent years, boys have been granted Travel and Tour bursaries to allow them to benefit from enriching experiences outside the boundaries of Sherborne. Examples include a cricket tour to South Africa, a rugby tour to the South Pacific, art tours to New York and Madrid and expeditions to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. The Travel and Tour Bursary Fund helps those already receiving financial support to attend important and enriching trips. At least 65 boys have been supported over the past 19 years.

THE COLLECTIVE NATURE OF THE ANNUAL FUND IS CRUCIAL.

If just 35 parents or Old Shirburnians were to give £15 per month (with Gift Aid) to the Annual Fund this year, we could raise £7,875 and fund: • An accelerometer and a weather station for Geography • A complete collection of new hymn books for the Chapel • An entire set of LED microscopes for Biology
