Our Ethos

The Park School is a happy, family community in which we encourage children to make the most of their talents, grow in confidence and realise their full potential.

Small class sizes and an enthusiastic teaching team means we understand the individual learning needs of every pupil and are able to provide unique pastoral care.

Set in 27 acres of inspirational wooded parkland on the Somerset/Dorset border, we offer an academically robust education that includes consistently outstanding pastoral care and a wide range of extra-curricular activities, all within our competitive fee structure. We’re a ‘no-Saturday’ school as we believe this allows pupils and families quality time together to relax, for a full weekend.

Founded on Christian principles in 1851, we welcome families of all faiths or none and we encourage pupils to explore the spiritual side of life as they progress through the school.

Welcome from the Head At The Park School we create an environment where children learn to believe in themselves. Through high expectations and standards children are encouraged to be inquisitive, to become resilient, and to show ambition in and beyond the classroom.

We aim to develop the whole person, not just intellectually and academically, but also by providing stimulating and innovative opportunities for each child to learn about and make their own contribution in our world.

Children at The Park School are safe, happy and conďŹ dent. They flourish in the classroom, in their enjoyment of sport, in the promotion of artistic and

cultural pursuits, and in their service of the community, through the encouragement of tutors and our House system.

I would be delighted to meet you, to show you around and introduce you to the wonderful people who make The Park School such an exciting and stimulating place to learn and grow up.

Academics and Learning

At The Park School we offer a broad and balanced curriculum to promote independent learning, reward achievement, celebrate success and nurture the talents of every child. Our commitment to small classes and a flexible approach allows us to differentiate and personalise education for each pupil according to their gifts, talents and abilities. Our aim is to equip each student with a solid foundation of education and a lifelong love of learning, giving them independence and conďŹ dence to think for themselves. From the nurturing early-learning days in the Pre-Prep, through the imaginationexpanding years in the Prep, to the academically-challenging years in the Senior School and Sixth Form, our supportive approach ensures pupils leave us not only well-qualiďŹ ed, but also as rounded citizens, ready to follow their chosen path in the world.

Academic results prove consistently strong and students proudly strive to achieve and surpass their goals at GCSE and A Level, enabling them to move on to the college or university best suited to their higher education and career aspirations.

Enrichment and opportunity

Beyond the classroom our varied and challenging extra-curricular programme gives pupils opportunities to learn, achieve and have fun through individual and team activities. Through a weekly timetabled afternoon of enrichment plus after-school provision, we encourage pupils to try a new sport, learn new skills or to contribute to school life, building confidence, wellbeing and creativity. We encourage each to find their passion, pursue it and succeed.

Appreciating the Arts

Diverse creative opportunities give each child the chance to experience the creative and performing arts in a variety of forms. At class level, we have annual Junior and Senior Drama productions and our ‘Arts Award’ programme. For individuals wishing to go further, there’s the ABRSM and LAMDA exams, the opportunity to take part in productions at Yeovil’s Octagon Theatre, or singing as a chorister in nearby Sherborne Abbey – a wealth of talent is uncovered and nurtured. Taking part is strongly encouraged and Debating and Public Speaking provoke lively discussions on a wealth of topics. Both as part of a team and as individuals, children thrive and grow in confidence as they perform and represent their school.

The Benefits of Sport

‘Each different, each able, all valued’ is the ethos that runs through our inclusive sport curriculum and seamlessly into our extra-curricular programme. Skills are taught, tactics are learnt and the benefits of being part of a team are evidenced. Through encouraging our pupils to experience a wide range of sports and games we aim for all to foster a lifelong love of sport, pleasure in its participation, and an appreciation of the value of leading a healthy lifestyle.

Wellbeing

We are committed to ensuring that every one of our pupils prospers within a community that meets their social and emotional needs as successfully as their academic ones. We take pride in the quality of our relationships with the young people in our care, as well as with their parents and guardians.
