From the Headmaster At Sherborne, the importance of kindness and generosity go hand in hand with academic excellence, ensuring that the boys gain the most from our outstanding all round education. We prepare boys not only for success in later life but also to be decent, thoughtful people who are as concerned to look after others as they are for their own wellbeing. It is this that makes a Sherborne education so special and a major reason why I am keen to ensure that we continue to extend that education to boys who would not otherwise be able to join our community. Education should be transformative. It should not only allow the accumulation of knowledge, understanding and skills but also the broadening of horizons, the acquisition of fresh perspectives and development of the values that underpin a happy, successful and worthwhile life. Sadly, too many young people are denied the opportunity to flourish and fulfil their potential to move on to leading universities and subsequently enter otherwise unreachable careers. At Sherborne, we have a history of supporting boys on bursaries, and this has, as you will see from the pages that follow, opened up for them otherwise undreamed of opportunities. And, of course, it is not only the boys themselves who benefit. Their presence among us also enriches the School, bringing to Sherborne talents that we would otherwise not enjoy and a richness and diversity that make the School a better, more stimulating place for everyone.
We will continue to support as many pupils as we can with bursaries. With your help, however, we can reach and support ever greater numbers of boys from our local community and beyond through our affiliation with the Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation. The Sherborne 360° bursary programme provides the opportunity to support boys who would otherwise not be able to benefit from all that the School has to offer. It is our aim over the next seven years to match the £2 million that Old Shirburnian Charles Eglington so very generously left to the School in 2018 to create a bursary in his family name. Although the impact of bursaries, unlike other projects within the Sherborne 360° canopy, is intangible, I can assure you from my own experience that the impact resonates not only with the boys who receive the bursaries but with the other boys in the School, reinforcing the kindness and generosity of the boys and reflecting the values of Sherborne that so many OS hold dear. I hope you feel able to support the bursary campaign with either a gift in your lifetime, or through a legacy pledge to the Foundation. For any gifts that you may feel able to make, we will be enduringly grateful.

The Eglington Bursary Charles Eglington (g, 56) pictured while at School, was a very generous supporter of Sherborne. He had an esteemed career in the City and was an influential member of the School’s wider community, not least through the new ideas he brought to Sherborne. Charles supported a number of projects and, very quietly, during his lifetime, supported several bursary recipients. Charles died in February 2018 but his wishes were to support bursaries in perpetuity. He left £2 million to the School and we are now looking to build on that generosity. On the following pages we have profiled four OS who would not have been able to attend Sherborne without the support of bursaries. They reflect the diverse nature of the School; Robert, David and Adam are local boys and Crispian is from Hong Kong.

Robert Ham
David Kirk
Robert joined Sherborne from a local school in 2010 and made himself at home with others in Wallace. It soon became clear that he was going to excel at Music and in his other subjects. Robert also became a leading light in the boys’ charity work and in 2014 he became Head of School and Head of House. He completed his undergraduate studies at Hertford College, Oxford, and is now on the NHS management training scheme.
David joined Sherborne in 2000 and became a star of the Fives Court and Head of House in School House. He was one of the early winners of the Bow Award for pastoral care to others before moving to Birmingham University to read Human Biology and then joining the Royal Marines.
Robert says “Thanks to the generosity of donors like Charles Eglington, I was given the chance to receive an outstanding academic and cocurricular education in Sherborne’s supportive community. After joining Sherborne from my local secondary school, I endeavoured to make the most of every opportunity becoming heavily involved in the musical, academic, and spiritual life of the School. I was grateful to be chosen as Head of School and go on to study at Oxford in 2015. As a manager in the NHS I regularly have to draw upon the leadership skills, resilience and respect I learnt at Sherborne and, as such, I remain extremely indebted to those who supported my place at the School. The experiences, skills, and friends I gained at Sherborne will stay with me for life.”
David says “As a pupil at Sherborne I was fortunate to benefit from a wide range of opportunities, a supportive learning environment and a large circle of friends. Afterwards I read Human Biology at the University of Birmingham and worked in the City for a year before commissioning into the Royal Marines. I have served on operations and led Commandos at home and on deployments across the world in testing conditions where temperatures have ranged from +45C to -30C. I am extremely fortunate that a donor was prepared to provide financial support to enable me to complete my education at Sherborne. My time at the School had a profound impact on my life and helped me to develop as a leader, able to work effectively as part of a team in challenging situations - in the workplace and in everyday life. I owe this to a generous donor, without whom remaining at the School would not have been possible.”

Adam Ferris
Crispian Poon
Adam joined Sherborne in 2003 and was the beneficiary of the Owl Bursary and Scholarship, given by a local person who was inspired to help a boy join the School after witnessing the smartness and politeness of the boys around the town. The School chose Adam, who left Sherborne after his successful A Levels and is now a trainee lawyer in London.
Crispian joined Sherborne from Hong Kong in 2003. He adapted himself well to the Shirburnian way of life, taking the many opportunities offered by the School including music, drama and sport. He also achieved high marks and moved on to Imperial College securing a place on an undergraduate degree in electronic and electrical engineering. He has since gone on to gain his MBA.
Adam says “Thanks to the Sherborne Foundation and the incredible generosity of a particular donor, I have been able to reap the wide-ranging benefits that come with spending one's formative years at Sherborne. I arrived from a school where class sizes were typically 30+ pupils so immediately appreciated the benefit of smaller class sizes, wider subject choices and unparalleled academic support. The true value of the Sherborne education for me, however, was in the innumerable opportunities offered outside of the classroom and in the friendships I formed over the five years I spent at the School and have maintained for the following ten. I will always be grateful for the rounded and fulfilling education I received and the many, many happy memories I will cherish.”
Crispian says “Sherborne 360° not only means that the Foundation can support more boys in this way, alongside the guarantee of an Eglington scholar in the School, but that these boys have an opportunity they would not have had to experience the excellent all round education the School offers. Support from bursaries has come in all forms, from major gifts to legacies and from regular supporters. Please do speak to us about supporting bursaries.”
