From the Chairman Dear Members It is a pleasure to write to you as Chairman On the farewell side, thank you to Tony Clegg-Butt for his many years of service to the Main Committee and others, including the Library Committee. TCB has been a tremendous asset, with an incisive and independent mind - just what is needed. Thank you TCB. As for our beloved Chairman Emeritus, Ngugi Kiuna, the Club owes him an enormous debt. He was an extraordinary and visionary leader of the Club, with the most wonderful sense of humour. We thank Ngugi for his many years of service and we look forward to adding his portrait to those of the other Club Grandees from our past. We’ll let you know when that happens, perhaps we will make an evening of it. We also pay tribute in this edition to Brendan Wright, a Member of the Club for 42 years and a Member of the Main Committee for 25. Thank you Brendan and the Wright family as a whole, for being such wonderful Members. A very warm welcome to the Main Committee to Dr. Reuben Mutiso and Rachel Mbai, and to Michael Turner for becoming Vice Chairman. So, where do I see the Club going in the next few years? Main Committee met recently to discuss our future strategy. We are keenly aware that we must remain relevant to modern day Kenya whilst preserving our traditions and idiosyncrasies. That is our essence and raison d’être. We want to encourage usage by providing facilities and services that you the Members want, need and will enjoy. We want to build a Club that will continue to thrive for future generations. But at its heart the Club should remain a Private Members’ Club for likeminded and clubbable people, who enjoy each other’s company, away from the hurly-burly of the business world. Our immediate priority is to encourage usage particularly in the formal area of the Club. I was approached recently by a young Member who asked me if she could be taught how to play Backgammon. Backgammon is one of the oldest known board games originating in the Middle East and was always a great favourite for Club Members in and around the Reading Room before and after supper. Please can we have some volunteers to teach the next generation and feel free to play games in and around the Reading Room. For those of you that may not use the formal area of the Club very much, I urge you to visit and enjoy it. Aside from being a great experience in a wonderfully atmospheric setting, it gives us parents the opportunity of showing our children the more formal side of Club life: the order in which to use cutlery, which wines should accompany which dishes and which way round the table the port should be passed, of course without encouraging any under-age drinking! I promise you they’ll be very grateful to you in a few years. Please bear in mind that the private dining rooms are also excellent for hosting meetings. I recently hosted my first Chairman’s Table and wish to thanks those who attended - it was most enjoyable and very informative. A last clarion call from me; we want to set up a Club cultural/drama society, so that, in addition to hosting events organised by third parties, we will be able to present our own Club performances. But we do need some volunteers to get this going – preferably with a performing background, so please contact us if you would like to be involved in this initiative. And finally, a big thank you to the Secretary and all the Club staff for their hard work in 2018, and my very best wishes to you and your families for a Happy Christmas and peace and prosperity in 2019. I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

AGM: OMG Eye watched 100-odd Members assembled for the Annual General Meeting, anticipating rotten vegetables being hurled at the top table. In the event, despite dark mutterings from the other side of town, few had ventured to the sunlit uplands of Muthaiga and dissent was more pedantic than apoplectic. The image of an oasis in the centre of a costly capital city, run cheaply and inflation-free, remains a mirage. Still, and although many Members had left by the time the last vote had been counted, there was an audible sigh of relief from the bean-counters that the concept of keeping subscriptions more closely aligned with inflation will in future be more easily accepted. Once the pedantry was over, a complete member proposed a minimum spend should be imposed upon all Members. It turns out that this has been implemented at certain leisure centres in other parts of the metropolis and is apparently regarded as a success. Eye remains unconvinced, but hears that regular users of the Club, chattering around the pool, don’t see a problem…
Eye see: vision 20:40 (4) Members of a certain age [Ed: er, isn’t that just about everyone?] look back on 1994 as if it were yesterday. 25 years have passed in the proverbial blink. Yet Eye becomes myopic wondering what life will look like in 2044. Unimaginable, really, but it’s only another proverbial away. Eye spied the Club Committee recently, huddled in Saturday morning strategising. Craning an ear to the door, Eye overheard discussion about what the Club might look like in another 25 years. It sounds like Members are in for “bold moves” in pursuit of “continued relevance”. If Pinks was this decade’s move, whatever’s coming next? Uh-oh. Eye hears the sharpening of gingerlyhandled knives…
Oeil dunno What the deuce is going on? Oeil hears ronflements of disgruntlement coming from devotees of the Herring Cup tennis tournament. Almost a century of unbroken play since Captain Herring came back from the races, tired and emotional and for once victorious, and gifted the magnificent Herring Cup to the Club. Halcyon weekends at Mukuyu followed, black tie dinners and dances tumbling into morning matches, before Muthaiga became the bespoke home of the most enjoyable tournament on the tennisplaying circuit. www.mcc.co.ke
But what does Eye hear? That for the first time in its glittering history, the Herring Cup has succumbed to austerity, old age, and a lack of interest. A downsizing of the tournament – and no Herring Cup Ball! Quel fromage!
eyeBook Eye regrets missing an evening with Angela Sheldrick, Yoyo Volak, and award-winning photographer Mia Collis (see Pages 18 & 19 for more of her work) at the launch of their book “The Unsung Heroes.” Commissioned by the late Dame Daphne Sheldrick, those fortunate enough to be there, were treated to a presentation of this delightfully documented, beautifully illustrated piece of conservation history, and a remarkable legacy of Dame Daphne's life's work. Copies are on sale at Reception and proceeds go to the DWST baby elephant Orphanage.
Eye sore: she saw One in the eye for Eye, as monocle pops clean out of socket. A pamphlet, she saw, with the Club apparently advertising properties for all and sundry – roll up roll up, read all about it. Or poll up poll up, hear a new property scheme. Eye’s all for making a buck, when the sun shines, but should the hoi-polloi be invited to private grounds to be presented with commercial propositions? Should Members be promoting such things, sanctioned by the Club? Eye thinks not.

Tony Seth-Smith and his daughter-in-law Julia launched their book ‘Donald’s War’ 100 years after the ceasefire of hostilities of the Great War. Muthaiga Bowls Section Celebrates 25th Anniversary We were honoured to have South African international and Commonwealth Bowls Champion Gerry Baker to join us for the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the opening of the Muthaiga Bowling Green. Gerry has an extraordinary record which includes five gold medals in the South African Singles (a national record); three gold medals in the Atlantic Championships; six Commonwealth Games (South African record for any sport, winning several medals including gold in the Pairs at Delhi) and five World Championships, where he has won a silver medal in Pairs and bronze in Singles. As part of our celebrations Gerry conducted a Bowls Clinic putting us through a coaching regimen with a set of training drills used by the South African international Bowling teams, which we all found to be insightful. The final day of our celebration was the much-anticipated Trips Exhibition Match, which offered the many spectators the chance to watch the Tiger Woods of Bowls in action. The match was played in a “sets” format of two games of eight ends being played. Gerry Baker skipped Eric Langton

(second), Maureen Burns (lead) against the team skipped by Ian Stamp, Oliver Fowler (second) and Sheelagh Zagoritis (lead). In a high quality match, both teams displayed terrific form with Ian battling to help his team win the opening set (7-3). Gerry was in awesome form showing courage as well as skill to help his team win the second set (8-6). As both teams had won a set each, the match now went to a “sudden death” playoff. In the play-off, and much to the delight of the crowd, Maureen produced a stunning bowl to put her team in a commanding position, but Gerry added a superbly bowled second wood, which won them the match (3-0). After the match we had lunch in the Ballroom and Gerry presented a plaque commemorating his visit celebrating MCC Bowls 25th Anniversary, and Gerry was presented with a Muthaiga Club tie and cufflinks. The Green is now closed for annual maintenance and is due to re-open on the 12 January 2019. John Porter MCC Bowls Captain

2018 MCC CHRISTMAS HANDICAP CHALLENGE CUP In December 2018 a new Squash Tournament was played for the first time at MCC – the Christmas Handicap Challenge Cup. With a splendid Challenge Cup Trophy generously donated by Kunal Bid, this will become an annual event and judging from the fierce competition to win it in its inaugural year, I’m sure it will become a highly-contested, much sought-after trophy in the years to come. The Handicap Tournament is a closed tournament held over two days and is open to players of all abilities. Players are given a handicap reflecting their capabilities giving First ever Champion of the Christmas Handicap everyone in the Club an equal chance of Challenge Cup Final Kunal Bid (right) and winning. It was also a great opportunity to play runner-up Walter Kuoni. against new opponents and meet other Club members. The 1st round was played in a round-robin system, where each player had to play at least two games to qualify for the semifinals.
Kavan Shah has been elected the future most promising MCC player. In the last quarter Kavan has shown his growing talent and determination coming runner-up in the Nina Bell Challenge last year and semi-finalist in the Christmas Handicap Challenge Cup. Congratulations from us all!
The semifinals were played in a best of five games knock-out. In the first, Kunal Bid beat Kavan Shah, 3-0. The other semi was played between Walter Kuoni and Joseph Kariuki which Walter won 3:1. The 2018 Christmas Handicap Challenge Cup Final was played between Kunal and Walter, both playing with an equal handicap. However the final became a rather one-sided affair and Kunal won the Cup in three straight games.

QUESTION: Who are these characters? Where was the photo taken and when?
In October 1913, the Imperial German army appointed Lieutenant Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbek to command the German colonial in German Cameroon (today's Cameroon.) Before he assumed this command, however, his orders were changed and he was posted - with effect from April 1914 - to German East Africa (Tanzania) whereupon he embarked on his glorious military career. Had he continued to Cameroon, he would almost certainly have been lost in military obscurity. While travelling to his new assignment, Lettow-Vorbeck formed what proved to be a lifelong friendship with Danish author Karen Blixen, who was traveling aboard the same liner.
ANSWER: General von Lettow-Vorbek (left) the enemy commander in German East Africa, photographed after surrender with his British pursuer, Major E. B. Hawkins, November 1918, Abercorn (formerly Mbala, north Zambia.) WINNER: There was no winner to the competition in the last issue.

TENNIS REPORT It seems more players are using the tennis courts though, disappointingly, the response for evening play under the lights, has been dismal to say the least (see below). The most use the floodlit courts have had were for Guy Fawkes Night! Our final tournament of the year the “Christmas Crackers” Mixed Doubles event had to be abandoned owing to the courts being flooded. Unfortunately, re-scheduling the competition to the following Sunday attracted less players as the school holidays had started. Nevertheless, sixteen players stepped up to the challenge and with two Pools of four pairs competing on a round-robin basis and eventually switching to a knock out stage at the end of the morning, Hans Shrader and Pamela Bitange (pictured) proved just too strong and emerged as the outright winning pair.
Our annual “Cup of Nations” competition was a great success attracting seven countries, which really made it a worthwhile and enjoyable event. Strong teams representing Australia and South Africa and even a last minute entry from Zanzibar shook up the mix for this most popular international tournament. With two Pools of six pairs, competing on a round-robin basis, it developed into a closely fought contest. Eventually, by combining points from both Pools at the end of the morning, we were able to determine the winning team. To everyone’s great surprise, the unknown, late entry, Wild Card team from Zanzibar emerged as the overall champions! Congratulations to Dirk Sickmüeller and Tessa McLellan (1st pair) and Adil el Youssefi and Julius Likuyi as (2nd Pair). All in all, a most enjoyable tournament and an exhibition of exciting global talent! Disappointingly, the “Oiseaux de Proie” competition for the 55+ players only attracted ten players – we can draw all sorts of unhappy conclusions from that turn-out however, five pairs participating in one Pool on a round-robin basis, still produced some exciting and fiercely competitive play. Congratulations to Bitange Ndemo and Patsy Chapman (pictured) the winning pair, for their outstanding performance. www.mcc.co.ke
I wish to thank Omega and his crew for maintaining the courts to such a high standard throughout the year and also many thanks to the Club catering department for producing some wonderful refreshments during our monthly competitions. Finally, please note that we really need to see more young players on the courts during this forthcoming year - their presence in our monthly tournaments would also, be most welcome!! IRON MAIDEN Young MCC Member Laura Harber recently completed a half Iron Man challenge in Weymouth UK. This grueling event involved completing a 1.9km swim, a 90km bike ride and a half marathon (21km run.) within 6 hours and 30 minutes. Laura was inspired to take part in the half Iron Man after watching her brother Mat and his friend Joss Cheli (both young MCC Members) successfully compete in a full Iron Man event in Italy in 2017. Laura felt so proud of Mat she was inspired to try and really challenge herself, to prove she was also capable of the discipline and grit it takes to complete an event like this. Laura’s first half Iron Man took place in Austria but unfortunately the cycle ride was called off due to snow on the course! She promptly signed up to compete in the Weymouth event in the UK, which was a month later.
At Weymouth Laura was able to complete the whole event and managed to hit her target time, finishing in 6 hours, 30 minutes and 37 seconds, coming 20th in her age group and 1,272 out of 2,600 participants overall. For Laura, the best part of the event was the last 15km of the cycle ride and the first 5km of the run. “The cycle course was amazing and the last section was very fast, with lots of long winding down hills. I was on such a high from finishing the cycle and felt great for the first part of the run, but the worst part was the last 5km of the run for sure! I couldn’t stomach any more energy gels so my energy levels completely dropped. I really had to grit my teeth through the last bit.” Laura Harber – Iron Maiden Laura Harber during the Half Ironman challenge in Weymouth UK in October last year. Laura finished in 6 hours, 30 minutes, coming 20th in her age group and 1,272 out of 2,600 participants overall.
The Happy Valley Heritage Trust MCC Member and author of “The Ghosts of Happy Valley,” (which was shortlisted for the Spear Book Award in the non-fiction category in 2016) Juliet Barnes has founded the Happy Valley Heritage Trust, a registered trust that aims to preserve Kenya’s architectural heritage for future generations, to create awareness amongst owners and surrounding communities about their historical value, promoting tourism and local employment in the area.
KENYA OPEN VETERAN DOUBLES CHAMPIONS 2018
Juliet established the Trust following a request from Nyandarua County government, in response to the success of her book, in which Juliet uncovers the lost histories of some of the imposing homes and farms which once belonged to the notoriously decadent Happy Valley Set of the 1920s and 30s, many of which have now fallen into ruin or dilapidation. Working closely with the National Museums of Kenya, the trustees also hope to create a listing of Kenya’s historic buildings.
MCC Members dominated the 2018 Kenya Open Veteran Doubles Championships with MCC Tennis coach Omega, Christian Vater (MCC) Kelvin Shingles (Karen Club) and Dirk Sickmüller (MCC) making it through to the final.

Mia ©ollis
National Geographic Award Winning Photographer MCC Member Mia Collis has recently won a fistful of international photography awards and has had three group exhibitions in New York over Christmas and one currently traveling the world. This is an extraordinary achievement in the highly competitive world of photography, but we shouldn’t be too surprised. Mia has been quietly making a name for herself as a portrait photographer in Kenya, but has earned an international reputation as a wedding photographer, and is commissioned by brides all over the world, to capture the magic of that special day. Mia studied anthropology at university in UK but, after graduating, she realised her passion was photography – specifically portrait photography - and she found that her degree in anthropology complemented her observations of human behaviour from behind the lens. Fascinated by people, their style, look, attitudes and demeanour, Mia found she had a bottomless wealth of material to capture in images – however, she also had a living to make and wedding photography became her main focus.
Mia (second from left) outside Weekend Studio, the oldest photo studio in Kibera, with her assistants Faith, Evelyn and Peter. portraits taken, but Mia found herself, at last, taking her own photos the way she wanted. It is a bizarre fact that several of the portraits that Mia took on that first day are the photographs that have won her recent bounty of awards.
By her own admission, photographing weddings Mia has enjoyed some amazing assignments, traveled extensively and encountered a wildly varied range of people, cultures and styles which has appealed to her appetite to see and study the infinite diversity of human nature. But none of the photos she took belonged to her and her work was often influenced, against her will, by her clients. Mia needed to find her own personal project, to take the photos that she wanted and to own the copyrights. For the last couple of years Mia has been watching out for just such a project and recently she found herself in the Kibera Slums in Nairobi, doing what she loves best - people watching. “I wanted to photograph people coming out of church in their Sunday Best, but there is nowhere to park in Kibera, so I was on a boda-boda, it had started to rain, the light was poor and I was cold and wet and was on my way home when I passed the Weekend Studio, the oldest photographic studio in the slum. I was curious so Peter, my ‘fixer’ and guide in the slum, who has worked with me many times, took me in and introduced me to the owner David Muyochokera, who is in his 70’s, and who had run the studio for the last 37 years. To my dismay, he informed me, regretfully, that with cameras now on phones, demand for his work had dwindled and he was closing down the Studio for good at the end of the week!” Mia was immediately taken with the run-down, authenticity of the Studio, its lighting and kitsch vintage props (dating back to the 1980s) that David still used as backdrops for his photographic portraits. She asked him if she could hire the studio for the day, and David agreed. At first Peter had to coax people in off the street as they came out of church, to have their 18

The most prestigious award, and the one Mia is most proud to receive is the 2018 National Geographic Photo Contest. Mia won First Prize in the ‘People’ category beating up to 10,000 other entries with her portrait of David Muyochokera. “I am so delighted my portrait of David won the National Geographic Photo Contest - it was taken on his last day working as a photographer at Weekend Studio in Kibera after 37 years and it is a fitting record of his amazing career.” Mia’s portrait of David won First Prize in the 2018 National Geographic Photographic Contest (in the ‘People” category) out of 10,000 entries. A copy of David’s portrait now hangs at Weekend Studio in his honour. After that first day, Mia recognised the extraordinary magic of the Weekend Studio and, to save it from closing permanently, Mia offered to take over the rent. The following week after www.mcc.co.ke
members’ awards that wet, dismal Sunday, there was a buzz in the slum and Mia found a queue of people, in their Sunday best, waiting outside the Studio to have their photographs taken. Over the next ten Sundays, Mia took several hundred portraits, for which she subsequently won five international awards. Mia the anthropologist, has delighted in observing how clothes change personalities and how Sunday is the day that people allow their innermost selves to come out and express their hopes and wishes. Mia’s landlady Margaret – a shrewd business woman Monday to Saturday – showed up for her portrait one Sunday as Sister Maria Magdalena in her nun’s habit. Another woman brought her two small children dressed in full University graduate sub fusc gowns and mortarboards for their portrait.
Every person Mia photographs gets a free copy of their portrait. “It is one of the most gratifying parts of this project - to see the delight and pride on their faces when they come to collect their framed portrait.” These are ordinary people living in a slum but they want to be photographed in a studio, with formal backdrops, wearing their Sunday finest, and Mia’s portraits capture their pride and dignity - just how they want to be remembered, looking their best. Several people have asked for their portrait so they have a photograph of themselves - smart, proud and respectable - to place on their coffins. The original objective of the Weekend Studio was to satisfy Mia’s wish to have her own venture, to project her own style of portrait photography. It has been a spectacular success for her and has evolved into a personal endeavour to keep the old Weekend Studio going in the slum. Thrilled with its success, Mia is now working on creating a book of her ‘Sunday Best’ portraits with captions and stories from the Weekend Studio, Kibera’s oldest photographic studio and, no doubt, soon to be the most famous.
For this portrait of her landlady Mia was selected for The Print Swap December 2018 Competiton, which showcases the work of international emerging photographers. This portrait and the ‘Flower Girl’ (see Front Cover) together won Mia both the Series Awards in the online magazine LensCulture’s Emerging Talent and International Photography Awards for LensCulture’s Event photographer of the year 2018. The ‘Flower Girl’ also won LifeFramer’s Open Call competition, which showcases outstanding contemporary work, and the winners are exhibited in shows in New York, Milan, Tokyo, and Arles in France.
Mia’s little helpers who come to the Weekend Studio every Sunday to ‘help out.’
This project is so beautiful, so simple and yet so complex….I love my trips to Kibera and I’m so delighted that through my portraits I have been able to capture the pride, humour and dignity of the Kibera residents. Mia Collis Award-winning Photographer 2018

edita’s ballet and opera programme We dedicated the whole of the month of November 2018 to Venice and as a Grand Opening the Nairobi String Quartet gave a spectacular Live Concert celebrating Venetian composers including Vivaldi and Verdi, accompanied by the fabulous Dutch Violinist Liesbeth Booth. The Venetian Concert was a tremendous success, many in the audience declared it the best at MCC so far.
I am kick-starting 2019 with a fabulous, exciting Live performance by one of Kenya’s most talented young opera singers. Zack Kariithi is a young and vibrant baritone opera singer based in Germany. Since being chosen as one of a choir of about 80 singers from all over the world for the opening of the 2008 Olympics in China, he has made impressive progress. He became a member of the Hamburg Studio two years ago where he now regularly takes on major baritone roles, making him one of the most valuable artists in the operatic world today. Zack is back in Nairobi for a short Christmas holiday and will be performing at the Club. This is a rare and very special opportunity to hear this talented young Kenyan artist and to welcome him home.
2019 continues with one of my all-time favourite operas – Puccini’s ‘Madame Butterfly.’ I discovered a filmed version of this opera in 2002 so perfect that I was sure there could never be a better one. After 16 years and many new “Mme Butterflies” that I discarded, I have finally found the one I consider better than my old filmed version. This production is colorful, new, original and yet still traditional. But what makes the greatest difference is Christine Opolais in the title role. Her voice and her acting abilities are riveting.
The 2019 edition of my annual LIVE opera will be a double bill consisting of a one act comic opera by Giancarlo Menotti ‘The Old Maid & the Thief’ and the first act of the better-known ‘Die Fledermaus.’
Madame Butterfly is the heart-wrenching story of a beautiful young geisha who falls in love with an American Naval Officer and sacrifices her family, her religion and ultimately her life to marry him. She believed that unlike Japanese, American law protected wives. What she did not know is that this was only true for American wives.
In ‘Die Fledermaus’ we shall see how Falke plans his revenge for having been the object of a joke in the recent past. Eisenstein, has been sentenced to eight days in prison; Eisenstein’s maid, receives a forged letter, inviting her to Prince Orlofsky’s Ball; Falke persuades Eisenstein to go to a Ball instead of reporting to prison that evening. Eisenstein’s wife Rosalinde receives an anonymous invitation to a Ball where she must go masked; Rosalinde’s ex-lover ends up in prison in Eisenstein’s place and the prison Officer goes to the Ball….where they all meet up with the inevitable consequences….
‘The Old Maid and the Thief’ exposes the gossips of a seemingly quiet town. The middle-aged Miss Todd has her world turned upside down when a beggar knocks at her door one rainy afternoon….A fast paced and melodramatic opera that shows exactly how “The devil couldn’t do what a woman can: make a thief of an honest man.”
Edita’s Double Bill Opera will be performed Live at MCC on Thursday 14 March 2019. ‘Madame Butterfly’, Puccini’s most popular and moving opera, will be screened on 17 January 2019 I hesitated for a long time before buying this ballet “Frankenstein”. Not exactly an inspiring title for a Ballet, but I was intrigued by the number of superlative reviews it received. This eventually convinced me to buy it. Now I add my full praises without hesitation. Choreographed by Liam Scarlett, the youngest choreographer ever commissioned by the Royal Ballet, the dancers are superb and the whole production is skillful, powerful, different and emotionally draining. ‘Frankenstein’ the ballet will be screened on Thursday 21st February 2019.
Zack will be performing Live at the Club on 10 January 2019. 20

New Arrivals EDUCATED by Tara Westover One of the most thought-provoking autobiographies you’ll ever read. Most of us take education for granted: few have had to fight for it, even fewer unfortunate enough to grow up in remote Idaho with a Mormon family and a bipolar father. Tara had no birth certificate, no school records: she knew nothing of the outside world, other than that ‘the end was nigh’, and that educators and doctors were Satan’s disciples. She had many siblings, one of whom was violent, although no one would believe that he’d do actual harm – some hope. She eventually went to school not knowing ‘what was Europe’, and was in trouble for asking the meaning of the word ‘Holocaust’. Later her university education – she eventually studied at both Harvard and Cambridge - opened a rift with her family, to whom she remained devoted, that almost broke her.
Answers to Bird Quiz
THE PLUS ONE by Sophia Money-Coutts Money-Coutts uses similar material to Jilly Cooper but does it better. Coutts worked for ‘The Tatler’ and tattles accordingly, choosing that rather irritating ‘jokey’ writing style so many female authors feel compelled to employ. Her characters think of little other than what to wear, where the next drink is coming from or ‘who’s for sex’? Let’s hope the contemporary novel doesn’t always reflect current society correctly. This frothy fantasy, with its endless sexual descriptions, revolves round the main character who begins to wonder whether she will ever meet Mr. Right. It looks as though she has, but you never know when one warning succeeds another. The plot is passable and at least keeps you guessing until the last chapter. DARK TIDE RISING by Anne Perry Switch your brain to full alert when you read Perry’s latest Commander William Monk novel. There’s murder and kidnap involved, but don’t make the mistake in thinking that the answer as to who is guilty is staring everyone in the face. Monk is deeply concerned that he has a traitor in his trusted investigative team. Somehow, somewhere vital information has been leaked and the only people that could have done it must have been one of his men. Perry writes of late Victorian London with an ease that almost makes the reader feel she’s lived there. She is an accomplished author, well-known for her historical accuracy, and has written some of the most revealing novels about the Great War. If you are a crime fan, this book is a ‘must’. A LADDER TO THE SKY by John Boyn Boyne’s novels are all different, all contain shocks and surprises and all are compulsively readable. This one is no exception. Its subject is the cut-throat literary world of competing best-selling authors. Maurice Swift’s first novel brings him dazzling success, but at the expense of its main character, who in real life is universally condemned after it is discovered that he is a ‘real person’ who confided in Swift, confessing what he has done. However, somehow Maurice is never again able to match his later novels with that same brilliance of his first - that is, until he takes more unprincipled measures to achieve his ambition. There is something Faustian about his unscrupulousness - he will stop at nothing to succeed, but how will ‘selling his soul to the Devil’ unravel? Boyne deals with a difficult subject with psychological insight and has produced another book that is ‘un-put-downable.’

So, the solution is “What do these birds have in common?” and the answer is that they collectively represent the colours of the rainbow. Bonus points for correctly naming all the birds, especially the Australian Rainbow Lorikeet. Of course, all the other birds are found in Kenya.

WWI East Africa
Lest we Forget The East African campaign is a story of heroic human endeavour and terrible suffering set in some of the most difficult terrain in the world. Not only was it the longest campaign; BEA was the only British colony to be invaded and occupied by the Germans; it was the first territory to legislate mandatory conscription; and by the end of the conflict, 23 countries were involved in the fighting in East Africa, drafted in from all over the Empire. MCC held a Remembrance Service marking 100 years since the signing of the ceasefire and to remember the Fallen of the Great War in East Africa. Gillian (Gill) Johnston Gillian Mackenzie-Ashton was born in Mombasa in 1924 but she and her parents lived on their coffee farm, Gunyumu, just outside Nyeri. The family returned to England and settled in Hampshire when her father fell ill. He died in 1938 and her mother died three 3 years later, and Gill then went to live with her relatives in Surrey. Meanwhile, in 1936 her uncle Mickey Lyons and his wife Dot, were building “Steep”, which is now the Aberdare Country Club and, later in 1967, her cousin Kevin Lyons, had the idea of building The Ark Forest Lodge in the Aberdares. Gill was educated at Gardenhurst in Somerset and then at Harcombe House. During the Second World War she joined the Women’s Auxiliary Airforce as a plotter and was based in Exeter and Newcastle. After the war she returned to Kenya and settled back at Gunyumu. The manager there was Rex Johnston whom she married in 1954 and had four children; Jacqueline, Adrian, Chania and Nicola.
Brendan Dudley Wright
Brendan and Sue spent the first few years of their married life at Sweetwaters before moving to live in Kiambu and later, Mua Park Road just behind the Club. That started a love affair between the Wright family and Muthaiga Country Club. Brendan became a Member in March 1976. The joining fee was 1,000/- with an annual sub of 250/-. From then on, the Wright family spent many hours at the Club. www.mcc.co.ke
December 1924 - July 2018 Gill was a very keen horsewoman and she and Rex were stalwart Members of the Nyeri Polo Club. She had a real love of racing and bred race horses and her stallion, Amos, won the Kenya Grand National in 1954. She was a Member of the Jockey Club, the Owners, Breeders and Trainers Society and the Horse Association of Kenya. One of Gill's horses was due to be ridden by Princess Elizabeth on the day she came down from Treetops on 'that' royal visit, but the ride never happened as the new Queen had more important things to deal with. Gill also had a herd of pedigree Jersey cows which she showed at the Nairobi, Nyeri and Nanyuki Shows with such success she was granted Life Membership of the Jersey Cattle Society of Kenya in 1996. Rex died in 1977 and following the sale of Gunyumu, Gill moved to Lamuria, bordering Solio Ranch, with her horses and cows. She was devastated by the tragic death of her son Adrian in 1981, but she did have many happy years there with her family,
friends and bull terriers. During this time Gill and her good friend, Liza Ravenhill, travelled abroad and attended prestigious race meetings and stud farms in Europe, Hong Kong and the USA. Her final years were spent at the Nanyuki Cottage Hospital where she died in July 2018. One of our longest-standing Members, Gill joined MCC in 1938 and remained a loyal Member for an amazing 81 years.
April 1928 - September 2018 Brendan was persuaded to take over the Chairmanship of the Swimming Pool Committee from Susie Goodwin in the late 1970s. Brendan took to that job like a duck to water and particularly enjoyed organising the Children’s Christmas party. In 1981 Brendan joined the Main Committee and remained an exemplary Member for twenty-five years. He acted as liaison between the Sports Section’s ‘young’ and the Committee. He also sat on Wines & Messing, the Christmas Draw Committee and was a key organiser of the Cirencester Ball. He was a model Committee Member, passionate about the Club, holding a great respect for the traditions of the Club, while at the same time recognising the importance of the Club being relevant to its Membership – then, as now, a fine balancing act. Brendan dealt with the cruel trials and tribulations that came his way in life with great stoicism. When Sue died tragically, twenty years ago, Brendan
carried on bravely and continued undaunted when he fell ill with cancer, which resulted in several of his digits being removed. But Brendan was back at the next meeting of Main within a few days of being discharged from the hospital. Stoic and thoroughly decent sums up Brendan Wright; best exemplified by him standing in, on more than one occasion, as acting Secretary, and doing so with flair and a great sense of fun. Most times, he could be found with a warm and welcoming smile to any itinerant passing through the Members’ Bar, ready to comment on the cricket, if it was on, and to offer a drink. MCC Members and staff owe a huge debt of gratitude for all that Brendan did for the Club – and to his remaining family, Alex, Toby and Sheila, who have been for so long, such an integral part of the Club. Brendan was a Member for a total of 42 years.

William Rochfort Horne
Bill Horne, charismatic, hunter, golfer and dedicated fisherman, died at home in Muthaiga in July 2018 aged 89. Bill will be remembered, not least, for his kindness, striking blue eyes and dry, yet teasing, sense of humour. His parents, Marjorie Wade and Edward (Ted) Horne met and married in Kenya in 1923, Marjorie returned to England for Bill's birth, but sailed back to Kenya within a month. Bill grew up in Kenya, spending his early years in Nyeri where his father was
Adam Hill Adam grew up on Glanjoro Farm at Njoro, the eldest son of Cennydd (Cen for short pronounced ‘Ken’) and Alison. On returning from Cheltenham School in England, he worked for his father until 1969, gradually taking over the management of a vast dairy herd and later the cheese factory, with the result that he became a highly-skilled cattleman, an attribute he took with him when he moved to Rhodesia with his first wife, Wendy, with whom he had three children: Simon, who died aged 16 of Leukemia; Louise, married with two children and lives in Tanzania; and Peter, recently moved with his family to Australia. Adam was a great mimic and acted out many a part for the local Nakuru theatre scene, including the popular Christmas pantomimes. After a short spell in Rhodesia, Adam was invited to Florida by a former Kenya farmer, John Clarke, to help establish a grand residential development from scrubland and swamp, complete with schools, sporting 28

the Provincial Commissioner for the Central District. The family left Kenya in 1936 returning to Ireland, then Sway, England. Bill attended Sherborne School, Dorset, followed by National Service and a seven-year commission with The King’s African Rifles before leaving the army to marry his first wife Jenny Brayne in 1954. They left Kenya to farm coffee in Mbeya, (Tanganyika) Tanzania. Their first daughter, Julia, was born in 1955. After the death of Lt Col WF Brayne, and the increasing ill-health of his widow Gwen Brayne, Bill and Jenny were persuaded to leave Mbeya and return to Kenya to take on the management of the family tea estate, Kaisugu. Their second daughter, Shauna, was born in 1961. In 1968 Kaisugu Limited acquired the 98,000 acre cattle ranch, the Laikipia Ranching Company, but Bill and Jenny divorced two years later in 1970. In 1971, Bill married his second wife, Caroline Carneggie-Potts. In
1974 The Ranching Company was sold to Paolo and Kuki Gallmann, soon followed by the disposal of Kaisugu Limited, the latter continuing to hold a special place in Bill's affections. Much of Bill's time was spent hunting and wild-bird shooting. On one occasion, he defied an early demise as he shot a lion chewing his toe (and the gun barrel!) After the sale of Kaisugu, Bill and Caroline moved to Muthaiga, dividing their time between their homes in Kenya and Europe. Bill continued to travel the world fishing, shooting and visiting family and friends. Kenya was Bill’s life-long love, when he became unwell in 2010 the family made sure he could remain in the house in Muthaiga, looked after by dedicated staff until his death. Bill is survived by his wife Caroline, daughters Julia and Shauna, and grandchildren William, Annie and Roxie. Bill’s father Ted was a founding Member of MCC and Bill was a steadfast Member for 70 years.
March 1937 – November 2018 grounds and commercial centres. It was in Florida that he first showed signs of the crippling rheumatoid arthritis that was to dog him for the rest of his life, and caused him to move to England for treatment. The years spent in England could be described as Adam’s wilderness years before he found a job in Tanzania, first running a coconut plantation on Mafia Island, then taking over the administration of a hunting safari company out of Arusha. This job suited him perfectly as he was an avid and knowledgeable birder until the onset of macular degeneration when, unable to see the birds, he learned to distinguish them by their calls. It was in Tanzania that Adam met his second wife, Elizabeth. They built a house together on an old coffee estate before moving to Usa River. Adam was a born fighter, tenacious to the last. One evening ten years ago in Arusha, a panga-wielding gang savagely attacked Adam as he sat alone on his veranda, leaving him scarcely alive.
Badly cut and bleeding profusely, he managed to crawl to his car and drive one-handed to the nearest neighbour whom he alerted with a continuous blast of the horn as he fell over the steering wheel. Adam died in November at his daughter’s home in Tanzania of an aneurysm. His many long-standing friends and family will miss him. He was a Member of MCC for 30 years. www.mcc.co.ke
