From the Chairman Greetings to all Members and Happy New Year! After a very busy autumn at the Club and I am delighted to report that we have refurbished some further rooms in the West Wing, which are now ready for use. I am pleased to announce that we have refurbished the former Reading Room, next to the Members’ Bar. The colour of the room is green and so in true Muthaiga fashion we have called it “The Green Room”! It has been upgraded and converted into a dedicated meetings room with in-built screen and projector for conferencing. Further refurbishment is planned in other areas and we will keep you informed. Usage of the formal Club Dining Room and the Private Dining Rooms has increased very positively latterly, nevertheless, I encourage more people to come and enjoy the use of them. I regularly dine there myself and I particularly like the new shorter menus. The recent AGM went off very well, thank you to all those that attended. A huge expression of gratitude for Committee Members who have stood down after so many years of the most loyal service to the Club - the indefatigable Gail Paul and the irreplaceable David Stogdale. I’d also like to extend a very warm welcome to Daniel Ndonye as a new Committee Member. Let us not forget the record-breaking Christmas Draw, what a turn out! Thank you, particularly to Richard Markham, who was the MC for the event and entertained the troops royally, to the Draw organising Committee headed by Yoyo Volak and to the incredibly generous prize donors, and particularly to Qatar Airways who donated the spectacular top prize of two Business Class tickets to anywhere in the world. Looking forward, we have some wonderful entertainments on offer in the coming months, including the Valentine’s Ball; a Mardi Gras themed party and the Nairobi Brass Quartet. Details will be provided by the Secretariat as well as information on the many other events and functions. The Interim Secretary has added a lot of dash to everything around the Club, for which we are most grateful. There are fantastic new Spa facilities, to be launched shortly. Christian sees big growth areas in all we have to offer, but particularly in the use of our sports facilities and let me just remind you what sports we do offer; tennis, squash, snooker, gymnasium, spa, swimming pool and bowling (the best green in the country!) Finally, I am sorry to report that we have lost several old friends and long-standing Members recently, including Stewart Vetch who also served as the Club Secretary from 2006 to 2012. During his tenure here he was very instrumental in the creation of Pinks, the Business Room and the Fitness Centre. He passed away on Christmas Day. We also say farewell to Allan Njoroge Ngugi, Berit Hollister, who was 100 years old, and to Gordon Bell, Gillie Kennedy, the Hon. Dr. Charles Wanyoike Rubia and Dr Vera Somen, among others. We thank them all for their many years of loyal Membership and we send our sincerest condolences to their families. Hoping you all enjoyed a very happy festive season, I now wish you all a very prosperous and peaceful New Year.

From the Secretary Dear Members Firstly, I wish all of you a wonderful 2020 filled with success, health and happiness for you and your loved ones. As the saying goes, “if you do what you love, time flies” and time has indeed flown since I took over in August 2019. 133 days later, I am happy to say: I loved every single day. And the reason for it is threefold: Firstly, you as Members have been incredibly welcoming, supportive and trusting towards me and I would like to thank you for that. Secondly, my team of 262 members of staff have been tremendously motivated and hard-working. Thirdly, and most importantly, we achieved a lot in the past 133 days and made good progress across my Top 10 priorities with the aim of making our wonderful Club even more wonderful. One of our Club’s most amazing characteristics is how highly identified, caring and interested all Members are in our Club, hence this time, I would like to share with you the developments across all of my Top10 including what to expect in 2020.
1. HR – our team: We have focused on committing and living a shared MCC vision, mission and values (IBEST namely Integrity, Belonging, Excellence, Stewardship, Teamwork) and cemented it with the creation of the “IBEST Employee-of-theMonth” Awards and the monthly “Genius Idea” Awards to tap the wonderful potential of our team to improve our Club. 2. SOPs – Standard Operating Procedures: We have reviewed, amended and introduced new SOPs across the entire MCC Member-journey from security at the gate to Clubhouse dining, Pinks, Events and Gym with the aim to improve your experience at each touchpoint. With these clear SOPs and corresponding reports, we can now measure performance and quality better, make every team member accountable and offer you better service. 3. Service & People: Since November 2019 - our team asks you to rate and comment on the service you received from them at each Point-of-Sale (Pinks, Clubhouse, etc.) We also conducted various surveys, which have shown us shortcomings and areas for improvement. Thank you all for your support, we are now systematically addressing all issues raised with more and specific training and processes to make our team better and improve service and products. 4. Offerings: We have introduced a series of new products and services ranging from offering you breakfast at the Clubhouse from 5am as well as room-service orders till midnight to cater for late arrivals. We have introduced a healthy alternative menu at Pinks which includes non-dairy, gluten-free and vegan options, as well as Protein Shakes and Kombucha. Please come and try them! 2

5. CRM - Customer Relationship Management: The better we know what you like and dislike, the better we can serve you hence we are constantly improving our databases to provide you with information on products and services that matter to you. It is a process, so kindly accept our sincere apologies in case we have accidentally “swamped” you with too much information, texts or emails. We will be getting better swiftly. 6. Members: We are delighted to see more Members have been coming back to the Club, enjoying our events and using our facilities in record numbers over the past months. The highlight was Christmas Day Lunch 2019, which became not only the most successful day in terms of sales in the 107-year history of Muthaiga Country Club, but also the best attended Christmas event in the whole of Nairobi! I'd like to thank the Members who have volunteered to join our newly launched Family Committee as well as the Sports Committee task forces which aim to improve our Club’s offerings for families, children, teenagers and sports enthusiasts.
7. Rooms: We now have all 22 West Wing rooms beautifully refurbished to 5 star-standard, so please bring your friends, family or business partners to stay in them. And remember, you do not have to stay with your guests at the Club, you can simply book them in, and our team will offer you room rates customer-friendly place in Kenya. roving eye
Your roving spy was looking forward to the Annual General Meeting in November and stationed herself strategically to observe the full trajectory of rotten vegetables headed for the top table. What a disappointment! What a quiet affair! Where were those dastardly fellows of gingerish hue, hell-bent on making mischief and upsetting apple-carts? Nowhere to be seen… Instead Eye heard talk of challenging times, of top lines and bottom lines, sub-optimal utilisation, short-term sustainability and longterm relevance. Standing in for the Chairman, a standing-down stalwart performed admirably – standing up, speaking up, shutting up – in a fine swansong. Everyone clapped politely. Increased subscriptions were approved. Still no ripe tomatoes. And then a Tour de Force. Bright blue suit, Club tie, no socks, fringe swept back, ringlets dancing, the interim Club Secretary took the floor. Genteel folk gazed agog while a ten-point Teutonic plan unfurled. SOP! CRM! SPA! Service! Dining! You! Me! Youth! Them! All together now: it’s the Best Club in the World! In a whisper of the Donald, we learned of the yooge opportunity in front of us, the fantastic results already achieved, the beautiful Members, the even more amazing staff.
Did monocles fall to the floor? Were defibrillators activated? Not a bit of it. Eye watched, astonished, as the assembled throng stamped and cheered approval. Today Muthaiga, tomorrow a new world. It’s peace in our time. Mr Vater’s drive and passion is quite infectious, Eye hopes some of the other Committee Members will catch it. Well, kind of. Eye’s phone has been pinging off its charger, inundated with text messages and lengthy mails, all advertising the latest wonderful this or amazing that at the Club – which culminated in a 6am wake-up ping advising Eye of the last opportunity to buy yet more bloody tickets for the Christmas Draw. Cunningly, that text came with the Opt Out option removed. Eye tells you, these canny marketing types are too much for Eye. But Eye gathers it was the greatest Draw. Ever.

What made him famous? And in which decade was the photograph taken? ANSWER: John Boyes – King of the Kikuyu, 1930s. WINNER: Tanja Chopra
www.mcc.co.ke
DID YOU KNOW? Boyes exemplified the renegade African adventurer. He was opportunist, explorer, hunter, ivory poacher, trader, gambler, reprobate, soldier - and even king. Born in 1875 in Hull, England, he ran away from home at the age of 14 and went to sea. He ended up in Mombasa in 1898 and immediately saw an opportunity to transport provisions for the Indian workers working on the Uganda Railway. Travelling over the Aberdares, Boyes met Kikuyu leader Karuri wa Gakure and the two struck a deep friendship, even becoming blood brothers. The friendship was largely one of mutual convenience as Boyes saw it as an opportunity to access the rich food resources and ivory with which he could continue his lucrative trade supplying the railway, while Karuri eyed the powerful artillery in Boyes’ camp that would prove very effective against his enemies. Boyes quickly integrated himself into the Kikuyu community living a simple life and marrying three young Kikuyu maidens. Because of his military prowess and powerful modern medicine Boyes was almost deified by the Kikuyu and news of his powers spread throughout the Mount Kenya region. He even claimed that Chief Wang’ombe, leader of the Kikuyu, had sold Mount Kenya to him for the princely sum of four goats, and felt that he deserved to be recognised as its rightful owner and King of the Kikuyu. Boyes died in 1951 and is buried in Forest Road Cemetery in Nairobi. January – March 2020 Muthaiga Country Club

Photographic Exhibition of Raptors by Shiv Kapila Born in Nairobi, Shiv obtained a Masters in Conservation from University College London, and then joined the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association as a certified Safari guide. Shiv now manages the Kilimandege Sanctuary in Naivasha on the shore of the lake, and runs the Naivasha arm of The Kenya Bird of Prey Trust, which he helped to establish in 2014. A happy by-product of his work is an interest and affinity for bird photography. His photographs have been published in many publications, but his prime motivation now is to help as many people as possible see the beauty of Africa and all the wildlife it contains.
Shiv will be exhibiting photographs of his birds at the Club on 26-29 March in the Peristyle.

2019 MCC CHRISTMAS SQUASH HANDICAP CUP The Handicap Christmas Cup was played for the second time during a two-day event at the newly renovated Club Squash courts in the first week of December. The MCC Handicap Cup is a competition where players of different levels get a chance to compete against - and maybe beat - superior players. It is also a great opportunity to play against new opponents and meet other Club Members. However, out of the eleven players that took part in the tournament, playing in a Best of Five games format, six were former MCC Challenge Cup winners, therefore making it a very competitive field. Nevertheless, there were no real surprises or upsets this year, as all higher-ranked players won their matches despite their handicaps. The Semi-finals were played on the second day of the tournament, between No.1 Seed Kunal Bid and Jonathan Somen (No.3 Seed) which became a thrillingly close match where Kunal kept upper hand finally Jonathan by 3:2 games. Daniel Slapak (No.2) was awarded a walkover win in the other Semi-final as unfortunately, Spence Dry (No.4) was held up in heavy traffic and arrived late, so the 2019 Christmas Handicap Cup Final was played between Kunal and Daniel, both playing at an equal handicap. The match was a close affair and fiercely fought between two players of the same level until the third game, which Daniel suddenly surrendered due to a personal commitment, much to the surprise of the spectators! Though everybody would have liked to see more of the thrilling game the Cup was reclaimed by 2018 winner, Kunal Bid.
NEW SQUASH CAPTAIN We bid farewell to the outgoing Squash Captain Walter Kuoni with many thanks on behalf of the entire MCC Squash Section for his commitment, enthusiasm and dedication to the Section over the past two years. Walter handed over the Captaincy to the new Squash Captain Kunal Bid who will further promote the game and try to encourage more young players on to the MCC Squash courts. BOWLS REPORT During the final quarter of the year the Bowling Section was extremely active. The annual ‘Triples’ kindly sponsored by Maria Cunningham was played in September with Oliver Fowler, Maureen Lilygreen and Patricia Killian emerging as the very worthy winners this year. Then, in October, we had the annual ‘Singles’ sponsored and won by Ian Stamp. In November the annual ‘Handicap Singles’ kindly sponsored by Oliver Fowler and this year won by Oliver. All competitions were well supported with the Bowling at a very high standard. In October, twelve of our members travelled to Johannesburg for five games of Bowls against some very stiff competition. Five different Bowling Clubs hosted the five games and the hospitality was outstanding. The tour was organised by Eric and Gail Langton and we hope very much that there will be another.
We are, as always, very open to new bowlers and extend an open invitation to any interested members to come and enjoy the bowling green, with many willing enthusiasts who can offer coaching and support. Ian Stamp Bowls Captain
December brought huge rains and our end-of-year Ladies vs Gents challenge was postponed until January when the green re-opens after its annual Christmas closure for maintenance. TENNIS REPORT ‘Cup of Nations’
‘Christmas Crackers’ Competition
This competition has always been a very popular event amongst our players of many nationalities. Some twenty participants were involved this year in what was a most enjoyable session of tennis. Teams represented Brazil, EU, Kenya, UK and the USA with each country providing two mixed doubles pairs. Pairs competed in two separate Pools and, throughout the morning, played against each other within their own Pool. By the end of the morning, after some fierce and exciting play, we were able to determine the overall winning team by combining both sets of points from each Pool. Unexpectedly, a tie was finally announced between Brazil and Kenya - both attaining 45 points each. In order to break this deadlock, all eight players returned to the courts for a play-off and were introduced to the wonderful game of “Beach Tennis”. This involved four players on each side of the net (two volleyers and two baseliners) playing first to win 21 points. After a close start, Team Brazil eventually managed to forge ahead with some dynamic volleying and won 21/14.
Cup of Nations Champions Team Brazil from left Alexandra Lehmberg, Philippe Dongier, Zuzana Vuova & Claudio Acioly. “Les Grands (+55) Combatants” Competition
A record of sixteen players competed in this highly competitive event (which probably just means we are all getting older!) As an alternative format, four pairs competed in two mixed ability Pools. Once the preliminary stages were completed, we then switched to a ‘Rankings’ Format to determine the overall positions of all eight pairs. Winners of Pool ‘A’ Rupert Mclellan & Alec Davis challenged winners of Pool ‘B’ Chris Shaw & Tessa Mclellan. In a nail biting final, Rupert & Alec emerged as the outright winners with a 6/3 result. Congratulations to Rupert & Alec but also, to all players for a most enjoyable morning of tennis. www.mcc.co.ke
Unfortunately, due to the ‘El Niño’ pattern of weather, the Christmas Crackers Competition had to be postponed as the tennis courts were completely flooded. With the rescheduling we only managed to recruit fourteen players, owing to the school holidays, nevertheless, we had a very enjoyable and most successful morning of competitive tennis. With the help of two of our ball-collectors (Sammy and Dennis) to create two graded groups of four mixed pairs, the various pairs competed against each other in their respective Pools. Both sets of results from each Pool were combined at the end of the morning to determine the overall winning team and the mighty ‘Little Angels’ (Chris Shaw & Aida Kimenia and Jonathan Shaw & Makenna Kimenia) were the outright winners of the Christmas Crackers Competition 2019.
From left Jonathan Shaw, Makenna Kimenia, Chris Shaw & Aida Kimenia. Finally, Omega and his assistants must be congratulated for their hard work in maintaining and preparing the courts throughout the year. Much appreciated by one and all! John Goodwin Tennis Captain

Kuki Gallmann Receives the Eccellenza Donna Belluno Award 2019
On World Peace Day in September 2019, an Italian organisation based on the Dolomiti Heritage site in Italy, conferred the prestigious Eccellenza Donna Belluno Award to MCC Member, Kuki Gallmann, in recognition of her lifetime of dedication to the protection of the flora and fauna of Ol Ari Nyiro (the Place of Springs) in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya, her home for almost 50 years. Ol Ari Nyiro is world renown for its indigenous forests, endemic plants and insects and its water springs, and is a vital watershed for the Great Rift Valley Lakes Unesco World Heritage Sites. Kuki has been a Member of Muthaiga Club since she moved to Kenya with her family in 1972 and has lived in Ol Ari Nyiro in Laikipia – where her husband and son, who both died tragically, are buried. In their memory she dedicated her life to the protection of the Kenyan Environment and she founded the Gallmann Memorial Foundation and the Laikipia Nature Conservancy for education, conservation and community service. The Eccellenza Donna Belluno Award acknowledges Kuki’s major contribution to the curbing of climate change and her determination and resilience in overcoming the numerous challenges in her endeavours to do so. Kuki is an example to those who do not realise the devastating effects of climate change, and the importance of alleviating the damage through conserving the forests and the natural world. Thanks to her sustained environmental protection for over a generation against many odds, Ol Ari Nyiro has been declared a Key Biodiversity Area for its exceptional variety of Flora and Fauna by Nature Kenya and Birdlife International. Kuki is a best selling author and recipient of numerous international environmental awards. She is an Ambassador for the Migratory Species for UNEP/CMS, she has been an Honorary Warden with the Kenya Wildlife Services for twenty years and a Member of Muthaiga Club since 1972.
Kuki, who originates from Veneto in Italy, but has been a Kenya citizen for over a generation, is famous worldwide for her environmental activism.
Having dedicated my life to protecting the biodiversity of Ol Ari Nyiro - its forests and waters - I am honoured and proud for Kenya that this contribution to curbing the global threat of climate change that affects the entire planet, has been recognised. Kuki Gallmann Environmental Activist 16

This is an extraordinary accolade and, on behalf of the whole team at Sirikoi, I thank all of our supporters. members’ ac hievements Last August, 15 intrepid cyclists, among them six MCC Members, set off on Cycle4Seas – a seven-day, off-road cycling expedition, from Kajiado to Watamu. Colleen Outram and Julie Church peddle the story here.
15 participants, 6 MCC Members, 587km, 2 million shillings.
Cycle4Seas - An epic off-road cycle ride from Kajiado to Watamu
The cycle route took us through some of the most beautiful countryside in Kenya - through its parks and amongst its wildlife. Starting from Kajiado at the foothills of the Ngong Hills, we rode through Amboseli, alongside Kilimanjaro, through Selengai, Amboseli and Tsavo conservation areas, following the Mbagathi River as it flows into the Athi, Galana and Sabaki rivers and on to the Indian Ocean and the Marine Parks at Watamu – a total of 587 rugged kilometres. Apart from being an epic personal challenge of stamina and determination, the aim of Cycle4Seas is to raise awareness for Kenya’s waterways that feed into the ocean and to raise funds to support the new and dedicated Kenya marine conservation non-profit, Seas4Life Trust and its initiatives. Seas4Life Trust has been set up by MCC Member Julie Church to fund initiatives that help to conserve Kenya’s waterways and coastline, and which promote the wellbeing of the biodiversity and ecosystems that we need in order to survive on Earth. The current rate of deforestation in Kenya threatens key water catchment upon which the entire country relies. Plastic in our oceans and waterways is increasing and our marine ecosystems, including seagrass beds, coral reefs and mangroves, which are critical carbon sinks, are not fully protected. Yet for every drop of water we drink and every 18

breath we take we are dependent on the oceans. In an effort to connect the land and the seas, the Seas4Life Trust is dedicated to supporting and investing in initiatives that promote healthy forests and river ecosystems and developing and improving marine conservation along the Kenya coast by removing plastic and other pollutants from our waterways and seas with the participation of local communities who rely on the seas for their livelihood. Cycle4Seas was the inaugural fund-raising event for Seas4Life, and was the brainchild of the late Jonathan Seex, who died last year, and who was also a Member of MCC. Over fifty percent of the proceeds from Cycle4Seas will go to support Seas4Life Trust projects. This year we raised two million shillings and funds went towards the Annual International Coastal Clean Up event in September. The Trust has also produced a Seas4Life Calendar with www.mcc.co.ke

it to be done. Anyone interested in connecting the dots between waterways and oceans; who loves adventure; who enjoys cycling and anyone that wants to make a difference, is invited to participate in the next one-of-a-kind Cycling4Seas epic off-road cycling expedition from 16 – 22 August 2020. It is a truly African wildlife and sea experience.
The Rockin’ Recyclers Team – MCC Members Steve & Colleen Outram, Chris Outram, Carla Ulyate and Dave & Karen Mousley. The best part was riding through all the beautiful rugged landscapes that we can’t appreciate in the same way from inside a vehicle. Seeing the red flag being waved to indicate that our refreshment stops were there – every 20km – was always a heart-lifting moment! The worst parts were the corrugations, wind, loose sand, heat, punctures and saddle-sores!
We were accompanied (and helped along) by some very talented Kenyan riders. Most of them had never seen the sea or much of the wildlife we passed along the way. After a litter collecting session along the highway, we have all become ambassadors for the cause, seeing at close hand the massive problem we have in Kenya with rubbish and the threat it poses to wildlife and waterways.
Colleen Outram (left) and Julie Church - Founder of Seas4Life Trust at Sala Gate in Tsavo.
Kenya is leading Africa with its ban on plastic bags, the creation of the internationally famous Flipflopi boat, its recent ban on the coal plant in Lamu, and the imminent ban on single-use plastic in the National Parks. It’s amazing what Kenya has accomplished so far. The country is already well placed to clean up its waterways and seas, recycle its plastic waste, protect and manage its coastline and contribute effectively to its huge blue economy potential. The ultimate aim of Seas4Life Trust is to build a ‘Blue Replenishment Zone’ of connected Marine Protected Areas along Kenya’s coast, to create thriving local communities who will become the stewards of these areas. By protecting the marine ecosystems, which are key carbon sinks, Kenya can reduce the effects of climate change for its people. Julie Church - Founder Seas4Life Trust
This inaugural Cycle4Seas event was very much in memory of Jonathon Seex and we hope to continue this annual fund-raiser with his passion and in the spirit he dreamed www.mcc.co.ke

edita’s ballet and opera programme I must start by offering a few words of explanation about the reasons the beloved Moipei Sisters did not perform here in December as we all hoped. The sisters had every intention of coming home for a visit, but the sudden death of their agent, the consequent career upheaval and problems this entailed, made it impossible to keep to this plan. The latest news is that the new agent, as we look forward to our programme of events for the beginning of 2020. is like a “bulldozer” (their word) pushing their career forward. They are conquering New York right now, but still thinking of home…next Christmas perhaps. In the meantime we wish them every success with their new agent. Year’s Day 1993, to hundreds of countries. The events of Tosca - partly historically accurate - take place exactly on Wednesday 17 June 1800 when the news of the Battle of Marengo (won by Napoleon) was reaching Rome. The hero Cavaradossi is played by Placido Domingo in his prime, both in voice and looks.

on Thursday 20th February at 6.30 for 7.00 p.m. Placido Domingo, Catherina Malfitano Ruggero Raimondi Contemporary Rome is the setting for this unique and highly innovative version of Puccini’s Tosca performed in roman locations and times as its historical political background dictates and Puccini wrote into his score. The events of Tosca take place exactly on Wednesday, June 17, 1800 - when the news of the battle of Marengo (won by Napoleon) was reaching Rome - and the dawn of the following day.
‘Pavarotti’
The latest much awaited film about the unforgettable, inimitable ‘Pavarotti’ finally came available in November and I hasten to share it with my MCC audience. As the cover says it is ‘the ultimate story of the man behind the voice.’ It is a moving in-depth portraiture of the man, the voice, the drama, the legend. The film is illuminated throughout by glorious excerpts of his greatest arias. ‘Pavarotti’ will be screened on Thursday 16 January in the Ballroom at 6pm.
‘Tosca’
Puccini’s opera ‘Tosca’ is arguably the most popular and well-known opera in the repertoire. This production has something more, something extraordinary - it was performed and filmed in Roman locations in three parts, each corresponding to the time of day consistent with its historical, political background and simultaneously broadcast live on Eurovision on New 20
with Albrecht and his release from the vengeful justice of the Willis family. The ballet is intensely dramatic and emotionally powerful. Mesmerising, absorbing, tremendous. ‘Giselle’ will be screened on Thursday 20 February in the Ballroom at 6pm.

‘Giselle’
“Acclaimed dancer choreographer Akram Khan speaks tremendously of tremendous things” (Financial Times) and I find this phrase so expressive of this new ‘Giselle’, which re-imagines the classic narrative ballet for the 21st Century. Giselle has become a migrant worker in a garment factory, Albrecht is a member of the wealthy family that owns the factory. An abandoned “ghost” factory haunted by the memory of female migrant workers who were victims of industrial accidents, replaces the traditional glade of Act 2. There Giselle’s desire to break the cycle of violence will lead to her reconciliation

book reviews
New Arrivals THE STRAWBERRY THIEF by Joanne Harris The ‘Chocolat’ saga continues. Vianne Rocher is now settled in and accepted by the older residents of Lansquenet-sous-Tannes. Her ‘special’ daughter, Rosette, finds herself heir to a forest, left to her by an old man, Narcisse. His family is bitterly resentful and tries to regain it. Rosette knows it has been left to her because she both loves it and will care for it, whereas the family have plans to ‘demolish and develop’. Narcisse also leaves a written confession about his difficult life as a child, which his son, the parish priest, reads with growing apprehension. What will his parishioners say when they find out what Narcisse has done? Once again village life is thrown into disarray, more so when a tattooist rents Narcisse’s old flower shop. Harris tries hard to maintain the brilliance of ‘Chocolat’ in this her fourth novel in the series, but has failed.
THE SNAKES by Sadie Jones Jones’s novels have won many awards and the latest really is spellbinding. Bea, daughter of a fabulously rich family, and husband Dan, son of mixed-race parents, set out on a much anticipated European holiday. Their first stop is with Alex, Bea’s ne’er-do-well brother who, to keep him occupied, has been given a hotel to run in Burgundy. Business is nil with no visitors, and there is an attic with snakes in it. Catastrophe occurs; police are brought in and Bea’s parents arrive. The grieving family returns to Britain with no information on the recent tragedy. Bea refuses any offers of financial help from her father, but Dan feels she should be more accepting. They return to France and the scene of the crime and then…. The end is unexpected. A satisfying read.
THE BINDING by Bridget Collins Emmet, son of a farming family, is apprenticed to the obscure world of bookbinding. The book’s title has a double implication – the literal one and the fact that the books Emmet binds contain dark secrets of many, who are told that if they record their story, they will lose any guilt that their conscience causes them. Emmet’s sister falls in love with aristocrat Lucian Darnay, who appears to reciprocate her love, but Emmet is doubtful of the liaison. A muddled, troubled tale ensues, sometimes difficult to grasp. Although Collins’ prose is exquisitely crafted, the story is given no place in time, although one assumes mid-nineteenth century England. The preponderance of deep snow and perishing winters lends added depression to an already gloomy story.
THE FALLEN SWORD by Ben Kane It is 198 B.C. Rome continues to consolidate its conquests in Greece. This was then a country far from united, consisting of a number of city states, such as Athens, Corinth, Sparta and others, frequently in some form of disagreement with each other. The book contains excellent maps, and a glossary, both essential in understanding the geography and characters of the story. Roman General Flamininus, humiliated by a defeat at the hands of Philip V of Macedonia, is determined to fight back to regain control. Common soldiers, Felix, Roman, and Demetrius, also tell their stories, which are filled with the petty jealousies and the more serious ones that exist within both Roman and Greek armies. Kane’s research is meticulous: consequently his writing is convincing and his characters genuinely lifelike. Kane even walked vast distances in Roman soldier’s uniform to experience what it must have been like participating in a long and difficult march. The result is another ‘extra-special’ historical novel. www.mcc.co.ke
Written by Colin Church Mel-el-Lek’s Mountain is a book of scholarship and fascination, told through the eyes of Mel-el-Lek, a member of the Wandorobo tribe. He is portrayed as a mystical representation of his people, crossing multiple generations and appearing at the beginning of most chapters with his eyes carefully observing the events taking place on his mountain home – the Aberdares. Mel-el-Lek bares witness to a selection of the most dramatic events – stories of people and circumstances – in which the Aberdares Mountain range has played a compelling part in Kenya’s unfolding story. The stories take the reader from the past into modern times, up to the building of the Rhino Ark fence and its dramatic impact for conserving the vast mountain range and is interspersed with Colin’s personal experiences that link to Aberdares and the earliest beginnings of Rhino Ark. The story of Mel-el-Lek’s Mountain is a story of Kenya as well. It encompasses many events – some of hardship, others of great achievements, times of war, injustices and civil strife. It is Colin’s hope that the tales introduced by Mel-el-Lek will give a striking vista into one of Africa’s most dramatic natural regions and how the Aberdares have played - and continue to play – a pivotal role in the unfolding events of modern Kenya. Essential reading for anyone dedicated to protection of our environment.

a day in the life of... Interview
A Life in the Day of … Bob Munro -
Managing Director of XXCEL Africa Ltd. Bob Munro is the Managing Director of XXCEL Africa Ltd. Since 1985 he has lived and worked in Africa as a senior policy adviser on sustainable development for African governments and the United Nations. He is also the Founder/Chairman of the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA), the Founder/Chairman of Mathare United FC (MUFC) and a founding Director of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL). In 2011 Bob was nominated as one of the top 85 high achieving men in Kenya. He and his wife Ingrid live in Nairobi and have five children. They were adopted by three Kenyan brothers in 1988 and now have five Kenyan grandchildren. What does your work entail? I am the founder and Executive Chairman of the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) in one of Africa’s largest and poorest slums. Sport is used in combination with community outreach and development activities to give young people the skills and confidence they need to aim higher, achieve more and build brighter futures for themselves.
Without those kind volunteers and the early life-lessons and the social skills I learned while playing in youth leagues, my character would have had much sharper edges. As they made sport such a force for good in my life, I owed them a debt of gratitude that I wanted to repay some day. Three decades later the Mathare Youth Sports Association became my payback, giving the poor youth in Mathare the same chance as I had had.
In the Mathare Slums, over 30,000 boys and girls now participate in the MYSA self-help youth sports, environmental cleanups, AIDS prevention, leadership training, jailed kids rehabilitation, photography, slum libraries and other community service projects. In addition to helping themselves, the Mathare youth also help youngsters in similar projects across Africa. There are now over 150,000 MYSA members and alumni in Kenya and abroad. A major reason for MYSA’s success is the fact that it is owned and run by the youth themselves. The elected youth leaders, coaches and volunteers average 16 years old and half of them are girls. My work now mostly involves advising and mentoring MYSA and long-term strategic planning and donor diplomacy. How did you come to do this? For me and many other boys growing up in the small Canadian town of St. Catharines in the 1950s, school was what we did in between Saturdays. With our fathers as voluntary organisers and coaches, on Saturdays we put on our team colours to play baseball in summer or ice hockey in winter, with or against our friends. On those eagerly awaited Saturdays, we won or lost the bragging rights for the next week. Through sport, we learned vital lessons and social skills. We learnt that achievement is our reward for self-discipline and training, for getting fit and, most importantly, for extra effort and teamwork. We learned to cope with losing as well as winning, gaining insights into our weaknesses and self-confidence from our victories. We also learned to respect the rules, our coaches, our referees, our team-mates and even our opponents. Our leagues were also a miniature United Nations in which multiculturalism thrived, as many players were young refugees from far away places. Once we put on our team colours, though, they ceased being foreigners and became our team-mates and friends. 22

Bob presents trophy to 2018 MYSA U12 Champions Your typical day starts at…? I try to avoid alarm clocks, I like to wake naturally. It is the birds and light that dictate my waking. I get up at about 4.30 am, make myself a hot water and lemon drink then do ten minutes of yoga breathing exercises. I always stop and listen to the dawn chorus, this eases me into the ‘deep end’ of the day. I loiter on the Internet to get my head into gear and prioritise my list of things to do that day. Between 5.30 and 9.00am is my ‘thinking time’ when I tackle the things that require careful thought without being distracted. Then, when the phones start ringing, I feel I can cope better with the interruptions. I finish my first eight hours at 1pm with a light lunch and a power nap. Then I start my second day of the day! As I age, I find my days are too long and www.mcc.co.ke
a day in the lifeInterview of... too short at the same time. I try to finish up by 7pm and devote the evenings to my family, but after dinner I often have to work on reports or proposals.
In the public and private sectors MYSA alumni include, among many others, the Head of Technology Enterprise Services in Safaricom; the Communications Advisor for Medecins Sans Frontieres; an award winning investigative journalist at Africa Uncensored; the President of the Actuarial Society of Kenya; several Nairobi County MCAs; and a lawyer and State Counsel in the Office of the Attorney-General. My grandfather’s footballing hero was Sir Bobby Charlton. When he became a Board member on the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, inspired by MYSA he came to visit Kenya. As I walked with him through the Mathare slums, I looked heavenward and hoped grandfather was watching!
What is your most memorable occasion in your career? The youth from the Mathare slums were the global pioneers in using sport as a force for good by bringing people together to celebrate athletic achievements. In 2004 Mathare United Football Club (MUFC) and MYSA were Nobel Peace Prize nominees alongside such hopefuls as Bono and the Pope. Since then, sports have been used to tackle a wide range of health, social and environmental challenges and conflicts around the world. But one of my proudest moments was in 2006 when inter-ethnic violence flared up in the Mathare slums with hundreds of innocent women and children fleeing to camp on a field near a MYSA office. As the government and nearby UN agencies initially ignored their desperate situation, the Mathare youth took funds intended for MYSA’s 20th anniversary celebrations and instead used the money to rent tents and buy blankets, clothing, food and medicine for the displaced families. Similarly, during the devastating post-electoral violence in 2008 the MYSA youth also organised special Football4Peace tournaments and activities throughout the slums. When the government and the Kenya Football Association declared that, after the violence, they lacked funds for the national team to join the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying rounds, the 16 Kenya Premier League teams agreed to fund the national Harambee Stars team themselves using money earned from SuperSport broadcasting rights, to try to heal their divided country. Over the next six months national pride and unity intensified and the Harambee Stars rose an astonishing 52 places (from 120th to 68th) in the FIFA world rankings. It was the first time in world football history that a national team had been funded entirely by the clubs. All Kenyans should be proud. What is the best part of your job? Helping to create new heroes and role models and then meeting them. There are over 120,000 MYSA alumni in Kenya and abroad and many now hold prominent positions in Kenyan football including CEO of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL), the CEO of the Kenya Football Federation (FKF), the Head Coaches of both the national men and women’s teams and top KPL/FIFA Referees. www.mcc.co.ke
With Sir Bobby Charlton and other Laureus World Sports Academy Award Winners in Lisbon 2004. What is the worst part of your job? Dealing with corruption, politics and mismanagement in Kenyan football. Those who plunder are not just stealing money, but stealing the dreams of the youth and preventing families from getting out of the slums. What do you enjoy doing in your downtime after work? I’m a compulsive reader, I like historical books and biographies and books that help one see the world differently. A top UN official once remarked that I’m one of the few people working at the highest policy level and in the slums simultaneously. Working in both extremes offers me an extraordinary and privileged perspective. I like to try and figure out what’s wrong with the world, figure out what needs to be done about it, and then get someone to pay me to implement it – that’s pretty much my definition of happiness! But my favourite downtime is Sunday lunch with my grandchildren, poolside at Muthaiga. What ambitions/future plans do you have for your work? We need to reduce MYSA’s donor dependence and start to be self-sustaining. In 2020 we plan to launch a series of income generating projects which include up-grading and renting our main sports field and sports hall, reducing our power costs and carbon footprint by installing solar panels, providing commercial on-line sports and leadership training courses. We want to continue producing more good leaders with sound values as role models for Kenya. If you weren’t Chairman of MYSA, Chairman of MUFC and a Director of the KPL, what would you like to do? I would like to be an editorial cartoonist. I love the fact that one tiny illustration can express so much and with memorable humour. And as a child, what did you want to grow up to be? Well, I didn’t want to own a football club in Kenya! I wanted to be a professional Ice Hockey player. At 17 I had to choose between school or going professional. While I was thinking about that, my parents made up my mind. At the time I wasn’t happy with their choice, but I have many reasons to be happy about it now – for example, in the late 1950s Ice Hockey players didn’t wear protective helmets, so today I still have all my teeth. PAUL CAPSTICK Paul Bryce Capstick was the youngest of four boys, born in Somerset, UK. At the outbreak of WWII they were evacuated to Penrith in Cumbria, where Paul attended boarding school. He enjoyed academic and sporting success, and set the school record for the fastest mile. After gaining a place to study Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow he first had to complete two years of National Service, serving mainly in Egypt. Paul graduated from Glasgow in 1954 and married Alice, a schoolteacher, a year later. Despite enjoying veterinary practice, he wanted to pursue a career in research and applied for a colonial scholarship. After a period of training at the UK Government’s Animal Virus Research Institute at Pirbright, Paul moved to Africa and took up a position in the Veterinary Department of the Kenya Ministry of Agriculture, based in Nairobi. This marked the beginning of his love of Africa. His work included developing the first ever vaccine for the control of lumpy skin disease. In 1962 he returned to Pirbright, where he focused on successfully developing an improved vaccine against

August 1929 - May 2018 Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and the manufacture of a rabies vaccine. These major scientific breakthroughs were of immense importance, enhancing the international reputation of British science. Paul joined the Wellcome Foundation in 1969 where he continued to contribute to the effective control and eradication of FMD in numerous countries. In 1985 he returned to Kenya as Deputy Director of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, working on tsetse and tick borne diseases. In 1977 he co-founded Analabs, a private Kenyan company, initially working in veterinary pathology and diagnosis, but expanding to include microbiology for the dairy industry and toxicology for fruit, vegetable and flower farming. He also consulted on wildlife, particularly crocodiles, ostriches and elephants and in 2004, he was awarded a medal by UN-FAO for outstanding contributions to development of new vaccine production methods, and for services to international control of FMD. Paul reluctantly retired to UK due to ill health in 2015, where he died at the age of 88. Paul was an inspirational and dynamic
April 1977 – August 2019 He believed with utmost passion and total focus that the people of the Mara were the guardians of one of the greatest wilderness areas on Earth and he dedicated his life to the conservation of the greater Mara region. He attained his pilot’s wings when he was 18 and his plane became an extension of himself. Three years later he and Liz Fusco, his partner of 20 years, set up Richard’s Camp, a small, luxury tented eco-camp in the heart of the Maasai Mara.
Richard Roberts was born in April 1977 to Sue and the late Willie Roberts. He was brought up living in a tent in the Maasai Mara, and it remained his preferred style of accommodation throughout his life. After attending Pembroke School and then Allhallows, Michaelhouse in South Africa, Richard returned to Kenya and channeled all his energies into wildlife conservation. A true son of the Mara region where he had spent his earliest life, he fought for its best future. www.mcc.co.ke
leader and he will be remembered for his outstanding scientific and technical achievements, but he was also kind and generous and a devoted family man. His hobbies included carpentry, beekeeping, bird watching, fishing and golf. He was also an expert sailor and was asked to represent Kenya in the Olympic Games in Italy in 1960, but had to decline due to work commitments. Paul is survived by Alice and his daughters Alison and Shirley, and three grandchildren. He was a Member of MCC for 33 years.
Richard’s Camp won the Conde Nast Readers’ Choice Award last year and was voted sixth in the Top 50 Best Resorts in the World, and third in Africa. Adventurous and fearless, Richard ran a very successful safari company and pioneered trips throughout Africa opening up otherwise unknown destinations, his most recent trip was to Chad with three helicopters. In 2011 he founded the Mara Elephant Project (MEP), which is instrumental in mitigating human-wildlife conflict
and anti-poaching. As testament to Richard and the team’s work, there has been a marked decline in the number of elephants poached within the Mara Ecosystem since MEP’s establishment. Richard loved the great outdoors and enjoyed hang-gliding, skydiving and sailing. He was also funny and kind with an encyclopedic knowledge of the flora and fauna he dedicated his life to protecting. His colleagues at MEP described him as “a conservation giant of his generation.” In 2017 Richard was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Remarkably sanguine about the prognosis, he accepted his own mortality with courage and dignity and never lost his wicked sense of humour and wonderful capacity for happiness. He died at the age of 42 and, as well as his remarkable legacy in the Mara, he leaves behind his partner Liz and his children Willoughby (Willow) and Ivy, his mother Sue and sister Caroline (Withey.) He was a great family man and he will be sadly missed by them and the many friends he made and inspired from all around the world. January – March 2020 Muthaiga Country Club

His first post was in Tashkent in Uzbekistan and was the first of the many ‘Stans’ he worked in including Pakistan and Afghanistan. After his retirement from the UN, with his vast knowledge and experience, Foxy was kept busy as a Consultant on numerous projects around the world, but it was during one of these consultancies that Patrick was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He is survived by Dee, his wife of over 50 years, and he will be missed by his many friends around the world and fellow Club Members. He was a Member of MCC for over 30 years. www.mcc.co.ke
