ORNE I am very sorry that we aren’t able to welcome you to Sherborne this term for Sherborne at Work. We would love nothing more than to give you a taste of life at the School, but I’m sure you understand that, we can’t do so at the moment. Instead, we are bringing Sherborne at Work to you and I’m delighted to welcome you to your very own Sherborne at Home. In this booklet you will find a series of challenges from six departments at Sherborne: Art, DT, Sports, English, History and Maths. From code breaking to juggling, creative writing to mechanism design; this pack has several fun and interesting challenges that I hope you will enjoy taking part in. There are other items enclosed to help as you embark on the activities, and your Sherborne thinking cap should come in useful too! We’ve also produced some short challenge videos that, along with your parents, you can view together. Please visit www.sherborne.org/ sherborne-at-home. Our current Lower Sixth Digital Media boys filmed these for you and this web

SHERBORNE SCHOOL AT HOME

page will be live from Monday 19 October 2020. You do not have to take part in any of these challenges if you don’t want to as these do not form any part of the assessment process for a place at the School. However, this is an opportunity to see some of your future teachers, test your knowledge, learn a new skill and perhaps, most importantly, have fun along the way. I hope that you enjoy taking part and I very much look forward to seeing how you get on. Take care boys and good luck!

Dominic Luckett Headmaster

LET’S

JUGGLE

Using the balloons enclosed within your pack and the household items listed below, have a go at making your very own Sherborne juggling balls. YOU WILL NEED • Flour • 3 Sandwich Bags (or similar) • 6 Balloons • Scissors • Tablespoon METHOD • Cut the neck off from two of the balloons and set aside • Spoon approximately 3.5 heaped tablespoons of flour into one of the sandwich bags • Form the flour inside the bag into a ball by twisting the bag and then secure with your fingers or a thin elastic band • Cut the rest of the bag away, leaving just the flour filled ball • Put one balloon over the bag, ensuring you cover the twisted end of the plastic bag so no flour can escape • Use the second balloon to cover the rest of the ball, starting from the opposite side. You should now not be left with any exposed plastic bag • Repeat twice more!

Meet the

teacher Mr Lim Head of Maths WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TEACH? I never thought about becoming a teacher, but a few years teaching part time at a tutorial college when I was at university, changed my mind. Now, I absolutely love it. Nothing can replace the spark I see in students eyes when they discover something new or interesting.

CHILDHOOD DREAM JOB? As a child my main focus was on being with my friends, roaming around in the fringes of the forest near our village climbing trees, catching spiders and fishing by the pond.

SURPRISING FACT? I was very much in love with Kung Fu and Chinese Lion Dance when I was a teenager. I still use the exercises as my workout routines from time to time even now.

Meet the

teacher Mr Chillingworth Head of DT WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TEACH? A group of D&T pupils! I was working as a designer and had the opportunity to help out in a school D&T activity.

CHILDHOOD DREAM JOB? My junior and senior school lay under the landing flightpath of Hawker Sidley, the aircraft manufacture’s runway. To this day if I hear an aircraft I can’t help but look to the sky to see what aircraft it is and so I wanted to fly (but then who doesn’t).

SURPRISING FACT? I started my career as a designer spending long days helping to build the Red Dwarf mothership for the BBC!

‫ ף‬Sherborne Design & Technology

GRIP MECHANISMS Welcome to the D&T challenge. Your task is to first fold, assemble and glue the card cube enclosed within your pack. Then, using card or plastic from packaging such as cereal packets or plastic containers, cut up and build (using scissors, Sellotape, glue etc) a mechanism to solve the following challenge…. Build a device to grip the cube by its opposite sides without crushing it. The device must then be used to pick up the gripped cube off of a surface, turn it over and place it gently back onto the surface before releasing it. You can hold your mechanism to rotate it to turn the cube over but the grip and release must be controlled by your mechanism.

This task is a test of ‘manual dexterity’ used to assess the degrees of control an industrial robotic arm possesses. Conduct a little research before starting to design your solution. Enjoy exploring how levers and linkages support good articulation. Use the paper fasteners (pictured above) provided to help build pivots, if required.

SHERBORNE SCHOOL AT HOME

CREATING USEFUL STRUCTURES Stiffness - in order to reach out to pick up your cube you will need your materials to be stiff enough to support themselves and the weight of your grabbing mechanism. The word stiff is an adjective (a word that describes something) and it means ‘not easily bent or changed in shape rigid’. Making our cereal packets stiffer Many tall office blocks use thin sheet metal to form the floors and onto this thin sheet they lay steel reinforcement before casting tonnes of concreate into thick slabs. The thin metal sheet would collapse if the tonnes of concrete were poured on….but the engineers make the metal much stiffer….by folding it into corrugations. Make a corrugated beam from your cereal pack using the scoring skills you developed when making the cube.

Corrugation

Glue a corrugation to a flat sheet of card to make a beam.

Notice the end profile of the corrugated steel

Flat sheet

Glue here

Exploration Investigate folding and gluing a beam structure from some of the cereal packet card. My beam became stiff enough to hold the scissors 30 cm from my hand. How will your beam do? Could you improve it?

‫ ף‬Sherborne Design & Technology

ARTICULATING A GRIP OUTPUT MOTION

Linkages transfer motion from one place to another. We are trying to pass movement of our hand and transfer it to the grip that will pick up the cube. Experiment and see how the input motion is transferred along the beam to form an outcome motion with an arrangement like the one shown on the left. Maybe get help with making the hole in the card for any paper fasteners used. The hole should not be larger than the head.

INPUT MOTION Really stuck? Try using the Internet to run an image search for ‘litter picker design’ or ‘grabber mechanism’?

Paper fasteners

Splay the ‘legs’of the paper fasteners out to secure the pin. Exploration Finally experiment with the method of gripping the cube. Try altering the shape of your pivoting output arm so that it pinches against your beam. Which design worked best and why?

Miss Allen Head of History

HISTOR

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TEACH?

I love to tell stories, and I really wanted to use my History degree in my everyday life. I love that teaching gives me the opportunity to do both of these things! I worked with young people and children since I was a teenager and knew that I wanted to spend my time around them – I enjoy the energy of the classroom and love seeing that ‘eureka’ smile moment when a pupil understands something new or gets something right.

CHILDHOOD DREAM JOB? I wanted to either write stories about History, or to be a spy! Strangely enough being a History Teacher and a Resident Tutor uses most of the same skills!

SURPRISING FACT? In my Gap Year before University I won the British entry for the Courchevel cup end of season ski competition.
