s a m t s i r h C at Sherborne Although this term has been a little different than usual, our boys have still embraced the traditions of the festive season and nothing makes us feel more Christmassy than our annual Christmas carol service. This year we have created a virtual service, filmed in and around the stunning grounds of Sherborne. Grab yourself a mince pie (or a Christmas Pudding Chocolate Cornflake Crispy Cake!) and listen to the stunning carols sung by our 124 strong choir led by our Director of Music, Mr Henderson here www.sherborne.org/admissions/class-of-2021newsletter We can’t wait to be back in the Abbey next year and for you to be a part of this wonderful service.

Our team of Matron’s love whipping up delicious snacks that they prepare in House for boys to enjoy at break time. Rachel Hiscock, Matron at Abbeylands shares her recipe for Christmas Pudding Chocolate Cornflake Crispy Cakes below. Why not give it a go?! Ingredients: 150g unsalted butter 150g golden syrup 1½ tbsp cocoa powder Cornflakes (about ½ a small box)
Optional 200g white chocolate Cherries
Method: 1. Melt the butter in a large pan over a low heat. Add the golden syrup and mix until smooth. 2. Add some cocoa, mix thoroughly until there are no lumps of cocoa powder left and check you are happy with the cocoa strength (be careful, the mixture will be hot!). 3. Pour in some of the cornflakes. Stir thoroughly until they are well coated. 4. Add the cornflakes a few at a time and stir until there is no spare cocoa mix.
5. Spoon into bun cases and leave to cool. 6. Break the white chocolate into pieces in a mixing bowl and melt in a microwave. 7. Drizzle the chocolate over each cake and add a cherry to each one. 8. Leave to cool and enjoy!

r e h c a e T Meet the We have some incredible teachers at Sherborne, find out a little more about just one of them here...
What inspired you to teach? My parents are both teachers and I was enthused by several games coaches at my senior school who provided opportunities for me to enjoy sport with my mates. Childhood dream job? Originally, I wanted to be a professional footballer with the one and only Bristol Rovers. Who do you live with? I live with my wife Sara (also a Director of Sport), daughter Lucie, aged 16 and my son Jamie who is in the Third Form in Lyon House. The most important member of the family is Archie, our six year old lemon coloured sprocker spaniel!
Mr Guyr of Sport Directo
Surprising fact? I am also Head of Ski Racing and spend far too much time dreaming of blue alpine skies and fresh powder.
E O R N S H E R B Y P E N N Have you heard of the Sherborne Penny? If not, here’s some information about an image that you will see a lot throughout your life as a Shirburnian. The ‘Sherborne Penny’ is in fact a copy of the seal granted to the Governors of Sherborne School (then known as the Free Grammar School) by King Edward VI when he re-founded the School on 13 May 1550.
King Edward VI’s founding charter awarded the School Governors with ‘a Common Seal to be made use of in matters touching or concerning only their said business and other things in these Letters Patent expressed and specified or any part thereof’. Around the edge of the seal are the words ‘SIGILLUM LIBERE SCOLE GRAMATICALIS DE SHIRBORNE’, which in translation means ‘The Seal of the Free Grammar School of Sherborne’.
In the centre of the seal are the words ‘VIVAT REX EDWARDUS SEXTUS’, which in translation means ‘Long-live King Edward the Sixth’. In 1887 these words were incorporated by Headmaster E.M. Young in the words of the School Song, ‘The Carmen’, which ends with the rousing chorus ‘Vivat Rex Edwardus Sextus! Vivat! Vivat! Vivat!’
From the 19th Century onwards the ‘Sherborne Penny’ was commonly used alongside the School’s coat of arms and was printed on School prize books, the Blue Book (termly list) and, until 1930, on the cover of The Shirburnian (the School magazine). In September 2008, the ‘Sherborne Penny’ replaced the School Crest as Sherborne School’s new corporate identity.

Juggling We’ve enclosed some balloons for you to have a bash at making your own homemade Christmas juggling balls. Take a look at one of current Third Formers showing off his juggling skills here www.sherborne.org/admissions/class-of-2021-newsletter
You will need: Flour 3 Sandwich Bags (or similar) 6 Balloons Scissors Tablespoon Felt tip pens
Sherborne School, Abbey Road Sherborne Dorset DT9 3LF 01935 810403 admissions@sherborne.org sherborne.org
Method: 1. Cut the neck off from two of the balloons and set aside 2. Spoon approximately 3.5 heaped tablespoons of flour into one of the sandwich bags 3. Form the flour inside the bag into a ball by twisting the bag and then secure with your fingers or a thin elastic band 4. Cut the rest of the bag away, leaving just the flour filled ball 5. Put one balloon over the bag, ensuring you cover the twisted end of the plastic bag so no flour can escape 6. Use the second balloon to cover the rest of the ball, starting from the opposite side. You should now not be left with any exposed plastic bag 7. Repeat twice more! 8. Grab some felt tip pens and decorate to design your very own Christmas pudding juggling balls!
