• ­­The­Model­United­Nations­conference­at Clayesmore­was­a­superb­experience.­Nine­pupils from­Sherborne­and­Sherborne­Girls­joined­forces to­represent­Turkey,­Ethiopia­and­the­UK.

• ­­The­CCF­participated­in­the­Town­Parade

• ­­Army­and­Royal­Marines­went­to­the­Royal­Military Academy,­Sandhurst.

• ­­The­Biennial­Inspection­took­place­in­March­where the­Guest­of­Honour­was­the­Commander Sandhurst­Group,­Brigadier­Carr-Smith.

• ­­The­boys­were­treated­to­a­night­exercise­and­our older­cadets­got­to­attack­and­defend­buildings using­blank­ammunition.­ • ­­Superbly­hosted­by­a­former­Sherborne­Biology teacher­and­CCF­volunteer,­who­took­the­boys­on a­tour­of­Old­College.­ Visits: • ­­An­Upper­Sixth­boy­was­invited­to­be­a staff­cadet, involving­a six­week Canada­cadet­exchange. • ­­One­boy­was­invited­to­spend­the­summer­in­the Canadian­Rockies,­as­a­staff­cadet,­following­his outstanding­performance­the­previous­summer.­ Training: • ­­The­older­years­went­live­firing­on­Dartmoor, took­part­in­navigating­at­night­training­and experienced­an­obstacle­course­(later­joined­by the­Sixth­Form). • ­­Boys­spent­time­learning­urban­combat­drills­and abseiling­from­buildings­in­Copehill­Down­training village.­

• ­­The­CCF­had­the­duty­of­marking­the­School’s­and the­Town’s­Remembrance­events­which­they­did with­due­solemnity­with­one­of­the­Cadets leading the­entire­parade. Awards: • ­­Head­of­the­CCF­was­appointed­Majesty’s­LordLieutenant’s­Cadet­for­Dorset. • ­­2 boys have won­(over­last­three­years)­the National­CCFs Competition,­resulting­in them being­selected­for six­weeks adventurous expeditions to­South­Africa (2017)­and­Canada (2020). • ­­The­Army­section­entered­the­Rifles­National Cadet­Cup­and­came­second,­only­narrowly missing­out­on­first­place. • ­­Boys­competed­in­the Rifles­Cadet­Cup­and­Royal Marines’­Pringle­Trophy­coming­respectively, 2nd and­4th.­These­are­both­national­competitions.

Training: • ­­The­first­pupil­from­Sherborne­School­for­four­years to­complete­the­Royal­Marines­Officer­‘Look­at Life’­Course.­He­spent­his­Lent­Half­Term­at­the Commando­Training­Centre­in­Lympstone.

­­­­• ­Old­Shirburnian­Major­General­Rupert­Jones said­some­very­kind­words­about­the­Contingent as­he­addressed­the­public­about­the­history­and role­of­The­Rifles. • ­­The­CCF­marched­behind­troops­from­1­and­6 Rifles­and­we­then­had­the­privilege­of­witnessing the­Band­and­Bugles­of­The­Rifles­play­in­the Courts. ­­­­• ­The­CCF­Sixth­Form­competed­for­the­title­of Iron­Cadet­to­see­who­is­the­fittest­in­the­CCF­to get­their­name­on­the­honours­board­in­the dining­hall.

Awards: • ­­Sherborne­team­won­the­coveted­Map­Reading trophy­at­the­annual­Pringle­Trophy­competition (named­after­an­OS­and­former­Commandant General­of­the­Royal­Marines,­Lieutenant­General Sir­Stuart­Pringle)­. • ­­From­hundreds­of­applicants,­one­boy­attended Cadet­Leadership­Course­and­made­it­to­the­final 40­of­the­Westminster­Award. • ­­Following­a­national­competition,­one­boy selected­as­one­of­10­cadets­from­the­UK­to­go­on a­charity­and­adventure­trip­to­South­Africa.

Ten Tors

2018 - 2019 • ­­An­additional­third­team­was­entered­from­the Fourth­Form. • ­­They­joined­over­400­other­teams­on­the­event and­took­up­the­challenge­to­navigate­a­35­mile route­over­two­days­without­outside­assistance, across­Dartmoor’s­barren­terrain.

• ­­Over­the­nine­days­of­training,­spread­through the­year,­the­boys­covered­over­100­miles, enduring­some­horrendous­weather­along­the way,­including­60mph­gusting­winds­on­the­final training­weekend.

2019 - 2020 • ­­28 concerts­took­place­in­Cheap­Street­Church,­the Music­School­and­Sherborne­Abbey. • ­­Joint­Schools’­Symphony­Orchestra­(80­pupils)­in the­BSR­and­in­Bristol. • ­­Wind­Band­played­‘Music from the­Movies’ (co-ordinated­with­film­clips)­for­a­local­festival. • ­­Two one-hour pupil­organ­recitals­were­held­on­the two­contrasting­instruments­of­the­School­Chapel. • ­­A­Jazz­Evening,­with­dinner,­featured­the­22–strong Swing­Band which­then­made­two­Lockdown remote­recordings­in­the­Trinity­Term. • ­­The Strings Festival and Masterclass took­place with­professional­violinist­Sophie­Langdon­as adjudicator. • ­­104 boys­in­Choir­for­two­sung­services­in Sherborne­Abbey­every­week­until­Easter­2020 (Lockdown). • ­­64 boys­in­Wind­Band­which­gave­one­‘live’ concert­in­the­BSR­and­made­four­remote recordings­during­the­Lockdown. • ­­Choral­Society­performance­of­Mozart’s­Requiem, with­professional­soloists­and­orchestra,­in­the Abbey­in­February. • ­­Two­boys­achieved­their­ATCL­diplomas • ­­Sell-out­audience­at­both­the­Cerne­Abbas­Festival in­October­and­the­‘All­Stars’­in­the­Dining­Hall­in November. • ­­Carol­Service­and­candle-lit­Advent­Carol­Service.

• ­­Prep­Schools’­Jazz­Day • ­­The­Chamber­Choir­hosted­the­Sølvgutten­Choir from­Norway­in­the­Chapel­and­performed­‘Carols and Readings for Christmas’­raising­money­for­the homeless­charity,­Crisis. • ­­The­Chamber­Choir­sang­Choral­Evensong­in­the Chapel,­and­afterwards­had­a­Choir­Dinner­in­the OSR­on­the­Monday­evening. • ­­The­Joint­Schools’­Orchestra­gave­a­concert­in St­John’s,­Smith­Square,­London. • ­­There­were­many­Lockdown­Recordings.­Each­boy recorded­his­instrumental­or­vocal­part­on­a­mobile phone­—­in­some­cases­many­miles­from Sherborne­—­and­then­sent­his­‘track’­to­the­music staff­for­compiling­and­editing­into­a­magnificent whole­on­Logic­(including­87­members­of­the­Choir in­Mascagni’s­Easter Hymn). • ­­A­virtual­Gala­Concert­for­The­Commemoration­of the­Benefactors­featured­163­boys. • ­­A­virtual­Leavers’­Concert­featured­a­45­minute video­filmed­by­­13­voluntary­musicians­in­their homes. • ­­Nine­Lockdown­ensemble­performances­were recorded­at­home­on­mobile­phones­and­put together­in­Sherborne­on­Logic­by­the­music­staff. • ­­There­were­10­Grade­8­exam­results­(5­Distinctions, 5­Merits)­amongst­42­exams­(grades­3-8)­taken­in the­first­two­terms­of­the­year­before­Lockdown.
