Enterprise and Entrepreneurship

• ­­Three boys have started a business providing surfboard and wetsuit hire delivered to the door in Cornwall.

2019 - 2020

• Two boys started their own businesses during lockdown: • Selling goods on Amazon

• Making and selling Japanese gardening tools

• One boy won the Entrepreneurship award for starting his own business selling garden furniture.

• Boys are involved with the production and support of TedX Sherborne, broadcasted on world media. One boy was invited to speak at the event. • 17 boys completed their bronze certificate in the iDea scheme. • A group of Lower Sixth boys presented a video storyboard of ideas for a marketing campaign at World First’s offices in London.

Modern Foreign Languages

• ­­In­January­2021,­an­OS­2020­was­awarded­a­place to­read­History­at­University­College­Oxford.

• ­­Intermediate/foundation­challenge:

• ­­One­boy­was­awarded­a­place­as­a­finalist­in­the John­Locke­institute­essay­competition­at­the University­of­Oxford.­Attending­the­Institute finalists­gala,­he­was­commended­on­his submission­and­on­his­contributions­to­the debates.

­­­­• ­Each­team­started­with­£2,000­to­invest­into­the stock­market,­generously­provided­by­Sherborne 360°,­with­the­aim­of­achieving­the­greatest profit­over­the­period­October­to­June. ­­­­• ­Of­the­43­schools­taking­part;­Sherborne­School, generated­a­29.5%­return­and­came­second­in the­national­competition. ­­­­• ­There­were­regional­winners­for­the­South­West who­were­invited­to­Mansion­House­for­the awards­ceremony­where­they­networked­with top­fund­managers.

Extended Project Qualification

Computing

• In­the­academic­year­2021-2022,­the­EPQ­was transformed­as­part­of­a­compulsory­programme­of Sixth­Form­enrichment.­After­a­term­of­following­an enrichment­programme,­52­boys­(around­half­the cohort)­opted­to­take­an­EPQ.­Two­of­these­completed their­EPQ­in­just­two­terms,­presenting­their outstanding­projects­in­June­2022.

• ­­Third­form­boys­entered­the­Sherborne­Coding Challenge­–­with­Bronze,­Silver,­Gold­and­Platinum Certificates­at­stake,­over­30­boys­won­Bronze,­15­won Silver,­10­won­Gold­and­1­platinum.­

2021 - 2022

2020 - 2021 During­the­first­period­of­lockdown­starting­in­March 2020,­Sherborne­embarked­on­an­ambitious­project­to enrol­the­entire­Fifth­Form­into­a­remote­learning, accelerated­EPQ­programme.­With­a­small­number­of exceptions,­all­boys­began­the­programme,­finishing over­the­course­of­the­following­6-18­months.­ • In­November­2020­the­first­set­of­EPQ­results­were published.­21­boys­completed­in­just­over­a­term,­and of­these­11­achieved­an­A*­and­6­achieved­an­A, meaning­81%­of­results­were­A*/A­grade.­Four­boys achieved­full­marks­for­their­projects. • In­August­2021­we­were­delighted­that­38­further­boys were­awarded­their­EPQ.­13­achieved­an­A*­and­8 achieved­an­A,­meaning­55%­of­results­were­A*/A grade.­The­majority­of­the­projects­were­completed­in lockdown­during­Fifth­Form­and­finished­in­the­first term­of­Lower­Sixth.­Two­boys­achieved­full­marks­for their­projects. • Overall,­of­86­boys­who­started­their­EPQ­in­the­first COVID-19­lockdown,­62­submitted­between November­2020-June­2022.­Overall,­25­achieved­an­A* and­14­achieved­an­A,­meaning­61%­of­this­cohort achieved­an­A*/A­grade. • In­this­same­period­a­number­of­previous­Upper­Sixth and­Lower­Sixth­continued­with­their­EPQ, contributing­to­the­grades­above.­One­of­these­‘other’ projects­not­only­achieved­full­marks­but­was commended­by­the­exam­board,­who­requested­to retain­the­project­as­an­exemplar­of­outstanding student­and­supervisor­practice.­­

• Several­boys­contributed­further­to­the­Turing Virtual Reality project­which­simulates­the­School­Library­and Alan­Turing’s­belongings.

2020 - 2021 • ­­Boys­across­Third,­Fourth­and­Fifth­Form­took­part­in the­national­Bebras­challenge­for­the­first­time,­where 15­boys­achieved­a­score­in­the­top­10%­of­students nationally.­Three­boys­went­on­to­compete­in­the Oxford­Computing­Challenge,­where­one­boy achieved­a­Merit. • Fourth­and­Fifth­Form­boys­also­took­part­in­the­Perse Coding­Team­Challenge­with­four­Fourth­Formers qualifying­for­the­national­final.­Two­boys­went­on­to achieve­a­Distinction­in­the­final;­an­outstanding achievement­for­students­in­their­age­group. • Boys­from­various­year­groups­attended­Junior­and Senior­Code­Club­and­enjoyed­developing­their programming­skills­as­well­as­solving­more­complex problems. • The­Turing Virtual Reality project­has­involved­boys from­all­year­groups­working­on­3D-modelling­the inside­of­the­library­along­with­many­of­Alan­Turing’s artifacts­and­books­that­he­read­during­his­time­at Sherborne.­­

2019 - 2020 • ­­The­Perse­Coding­Challenge:­ ­­­­• ­Completed­by­three­boys­in­2020 ­­­­• ­Qualified­for­the­national­semi-finals­with­good passing­scores. ­­­­• ­Several­boys­completed­the­EdX­online­MOOC­for python­coding­in­2020. ­­­­• ­15­boys­took­part­in­the­coding­club­and­designed and­coded­a­simulated­robotic­car­(self-driving)­and entered­several­competitions.

Model United Nations

• ­­The­Senior­Inter-House­Balloon­Debate­was­held with­much­fierce­competition.­Boys­acted­as characters,­arguing­to­maintain­their­position­in­the metaphorical­‘sinking­balloon’.­Abbeylands emerged­victorious­with­special­mention­for­their innovative­arguments­and­spirited­free­debate.­

• ­­The­Model­United­Nations­group­ran­a­series­of mini­conferences­in­School­and­online­this­year. Boys­from­all­year­groups­participated,­developing research,­presentation­and­debating­skills.

• ­­Junior­Debaters­had­much­success­in­competition with­Sherborne­Girls,­forming­both­separate­and mixed­Teams,­and­debating­on­issues­as­wide ranging­as­graffiti,­free­speech­and­the­right­to protest.

• ­­The­Model­United­Nations­conference­at Clayesmore­was­a­superb­experience.­Nine­pupils from­Sherborne­and­Sherborne­Girls­joined­forces to­represent­Turkey,­Ethiopia­and­the­UK.

• ­­The­CCF­participated­in­the­Town­Parade

• ­­Army­and­Royal­Marines­went­to­the­Royal­Military Academy,­Sandhurst.

• ­­The­Biennial­Inspection­took­place­in­March­where the­Guest­of­Honour­was­the­Commander Sandhurst­Group,­Brigadier­Carr-Smith.

• ­­The­boys­were­treated­to­a­night­exercise­and­our older­cadets­got­to­attack­and­defend­buildings using­blank­ammunition.­ • ­­Superbly­hosted­by­a­former­Sherborne­Biology teacher­and­CCF­volunteer,­who­took­the­boys­on a­tour­of­Old­College.­ Visits: • ­­An­Upper­Sixth­boy­was­invited­to­be­a staff­cadet, involving­a six­week Canada­cadet­exchange. • ­­One­boy­was­invited­to­spend­the­summer­in­the Canadian­Rockies,­as­a­staff­cadet,­following­his outstanding­performance­the­previous­summer.­ Training: • ­­The­older­years­went­live­firing­on­Dartmoor, took­part­in­navigating­at­night­training­and experienced­an­obstacle­course­(later­joined­by the­Sixth­Form).

• ­­The­CCF­had­the­duty­of­marking­the­School’s­and the­Town’s­Remembrance­events­which­they­did with­due­solemnity­with­one­of­the­Cadets leading the­entire­parade. Awards: • ­­Head­of­the­CCF­was­appointed­Her­Majesty’s Lord­Lieutenant’s­Cadet­for­Dorset. • ­­2 boys have won­(over­last­three­years)­the National­CCF Competition,­resulting­in them­being selected­for six­weeks adventurous­expeditions to South­Africa (2017)­and­Canada­(2020). • ­­The­Army­section­entered­the­Rifles­National Cadet­Cup­and­came­second,­only­narrowly missing­out­on­first­place. • ­­Boys­competed­in­the Rifles­Cadet­Cup­and­Royal Marines’­Pringle­Trophy­coming­respectively, 2nd and­4th.­These­are­both­national­competitions.

• ­­Boys­spent­time­learning­urban­combat­drills­and abseiling­from­buildings­in­Copehill­Down­training village.­

Events • ­­The­Rifles­Freedom­of­Sherborne­Parade­was­a­real highlight­for­the­CCF­and­the­School: ­­­­• ­Old­Shirburnian­Major­General­Rupert­Jones said­some­very­kind­words­about­the­Contingent as­he­addressed­the­public­about­the­history­and role­of­The­Rifles. • ­­The­CCF­marched­behind­troops­from­1­and­6 Rifles­and­we­then­had­the­privilege­of­witnessing the­Band­and­Bugles­of­The­Rifles­play­in­the Courts. ­­­­• ­The­CCF­Sixth­Form­competed­for­the­title­of Iron­Cadet­to­see­who­is­the­fittest­in­the­CCF­to get­their­name­on­the­honours­board­in­the dining­hall.

2021 - 2022 For­the­first­time­Sherborne­School­joined­together­with Sherborne­Girls,­entering­a­CCF­team­for­the­45­mile challenge.­Five­boys­and­two­girls­from­Sherborne­Girls took­part.­ Sherborne­School­CCF­and­Lyon­House­entered­a­team, each­consisting­of­six­boys,­for­the­35­mile­challenge.­ All­teams­completed­the­event­in­good­time­and­in great­spirit.

2018 - 2019 • An additional third team was entered from the Fourth Form. • They joined over 400 other teams on the event and took up the challenge to navigate a 35 mile route over two days without outside assistance, across Dartmoor’s barren terrain. • Over the nine days of training, spread through the year, the boys covered over 100 miles, enduring some horrendous weather along the way, including 60mph gusting winds on the final training weekend.
