m r e T t n e @ L Sherborne
Despite the Lent term being a term of two halves due to the national lockdown, our boys have still achieved a huge amount and shown tremendous determination, adaptability and creativity. Great academic strides have been made and we've all been entertained by numerous plays and concerts, delivered online and through Radio Sherborne. Sport and other outdoor activities such as CCF and the Duke of Edinburgh Award have continued, and we held weekly prerecorded physical and skill-based sessions as well as live HiiT sessions from our very own resident Joe Wicks in the Sports Centre. There were interactive Zoom meetings with top sportsmen and also webinars on topics such as Nutrition in Sport. We’ve also run various other initiatives including baking competitions, House challenges and the now infamous Sherborne Scavenger Hunt. Take a look at this end of term montage we’ve created that will give you a snapshot of what life this term has been like at Sherborne here www.sherborne.org/admissions/lentterm-spotlight We can’t wait for to experience all the academic, co-curricular and social opportunities here at Sherborne.

the
Housemaster
The Housemasters play a very important role in supporting all boys at Sherborne, particularly the Third Form. Meet Mr McGuire, Housemaster of Abbeylands and find out a little more about him below. * Born and bred in Wales, Mr McGuire is proud of his homeland and his first language is Welsh. He may teach you a phrase or two! * He played in the same Welsh U18 rugby team as Welsh captain Alun Wyn Jones. * Mr McGuire is a huge fan of Christmas and Christmas Carol is his most thumbed novel.

* He is a big foodie and loves a hot curry. * Like many of us, Mr McGuire is dreaming of his next holiday and his favorite destinations are Mother Ivy’s Bay in Cornwall and Aberdaron in North Wales.
During the nineteenth century it became fashionable for the great public schools to adopt a school song of their own. At Winchester they sing ‘Dulce Domum’, at Rugby ‘Floreat Rugbeia’ (1867), at Harrow ‘Forty Years On’ (1872), and at Eton ‘Carmen Etonense’ (1877), although some may think Eton’s school song should be the ‘Eton Boating Song’ (1863).
Sherborne School acquired its own School anthem in 1887 when Headmaster Edward Mallet Young wrote the words (in Latin) of ‘Carmen Saeculare’ also known as ‘Carmen Shirburniense’. 1887 was a significant year for both the monarchy and Sherborne School. In June 1887 the Empire celebrated Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. To commemorate this event the School commissioned from Clayton & Bell a stained glass window for the south end of the Upper Library depicting the granting by Edward VI in 1550 of
the School’s founding charter. That same month, at the Commemoration Day concert held on 30 June 1887, the School Musical Society performed for the first time all five verses of Young’s ‘Carmen Saeculare’, set to music by the School’s Director of Music, Louis Napoleon Parker. And so the tradition began. Today, the first and last verses only of Young’s poem are sung by the School. The rousing last line of each verse, ‘Vivat Rex Eduardus Sextus’ or ‘Long Live King Edward the Sixth’, commemorates the School’s
Royal foundation and is taken directly from the original Governors’ Seal of 1550, known more commonly as the ‘Sherborne Penny’. www.sherborne.org/admissions /lent-term-spotlight to listen to a recent recording on of our boys singing The Carmen.

O U Y W N O K There is a long-standing tradition at Sherborne where our Sixth Form boys don their tweed blazers every Thursday. ‘Tweed Thursday’ is part of Sherborne’s fabric and it's great to see our boys continuing the Sherborne way!

Clubs & Societies 50
We have over different clubs boys can get involved in ranging from skiing to debating, fly fishing to creative writing.
The coding club is becoming increasingly popular and a new spin off society from this is the Alan Turing Virtual Reality Society. Boys from across all year groups meet every Monday to work on an exciting project to create an app that provides a fully-immersive 3D virtual world to celebrate the life of one of our most famous and influential Old Shirburnian's, Alan Turing.
You'll have the chance to try out so many different activities when you join Sherborne. We're always adding new clubs and societies to the bill so do let us know what your passions are.
