Belle befriends the castle’s enchanted staff: a china teapot (voice of Emma Thompson), a candelabra (voice of Ewan McGregor) and a mantel clock (Ian McKellen), and eventually learns to see beneath the Beast’s exterior to discover the heart and soul of a prince. (Showing at Halstock) HACKSAW RIDGE (15) is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss who, at Okinawa in the bloodiest battle of WW2, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WW2 to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour. Starring Andrew Garfield. Now totally lost in an alien urban environment and too young to identify either himself or his home to the authorities, Saroo struggles to survive as a street child until he is sent to an orphanage. Adopted by the Brierley family in Tasmania, he grows up in a loving, prosperous home. However, for all his material good fortune, Saroo finds himself plagued by memories of his lost family. He tries to search for them, though guilt drives him to hide this quest from his adoptive parents and his girlfriend. Almost 2 Million Dementia Friends – Can You Help Get to 2 Million? ave you heard about Dementia Friends? Dementia Friends is an initiative from the Alzheimer’s Society to reduce the stigma surrounding Dementia, by helping people understand more about it and learn about small ways in which they can help. The initiative started in 2012, has already passed its first million Friends Target and is now almost at its second million. Would it not be great to help get it to 2 Million? The aim is then to get to four million by 2020. So, how can you become a Dementia Friend? You can either attend an information session, which lasts around 45 minutes to one hour. The great thing is there are sessions everywhere, all the time! You can go to the Dementia Friends Website and find local sessions in your area. If you cannot find a session convenient to you, do not worry, you can still become a Dementia Friend by following the online route. If you are involved in a business, organisation, group, school, college etc, and you think becoming a 'friend' is something you would all like to do why not contact them directly or via a Dementia Friends Champion who are volunteers - there is no cost to you for holding a Session. Why become a Dementia Friend? In the UK there are approximately 850,000 people living with Dementia.

One in 14 people aged 65 and over have Dementia. However, did you know, 42,000 people aged under 65 have Dementia? As well as those living with Dementia, think of all the carers, family members and friends of people living with Dementia. That is a huge number of people. By taking just one hour of your time, you could learn some great skills in a friendly, informative environment to help your understanding and dispel some of the myths, get to know the five key messages so that you see that ‘There is More to a Person than the Dementia’ (I will give you a head start that is one). Also, the things you learn apply to many other illnesses, health problems and disabilities. Let us all do our bit to become a bit more understanding. You can find out more about Dementia Friends, at www.dementiafriends.org.uk or contact me. I am both a Dementia Friend and a Dementia Friends Champion. Being a Champion means that I have been on a one day Induction so that I can deliver Dementia Friends Information Sessions.

Losing weight but it keeps finding you again inter may be colder and wetter and we all dread those short, dark days, but it does have compensations if you are overweight. So much easier to disguise those unsightly bulges and rolls of tummy fat with layers of loose dark clothing! Summer comes along, and suddenly those lighter, thinner clothes seem to reveal all the extra pounds you have been hiding. Holidays loom and the thought of revealing more flesh when baring all is enough to make anyone want to binge on doughnuts or yet more chocolate. If you are agreeing with this, the chances are that you have already tried countless diets or healthy eating programmes and each one has resulted in less weight loss for a shorter time. Research done by the National Association for Eating Disorders shows that modern weight control programmes can achieve weight losses of around 15 pounds at best but the proportion of people who maintain their losses for over five years is in single figures. Only one in 20 people who join commercial weight control programmes is said to reach goal weight. Further, half of all dieters put back even more weight than they have lost. The reality is that your subconscious mind knows that you absolutely loathe dieting because it feels like deprivation so it actually tries to make you feel better by making you want to eat all the ‘naughty foods’ that you crave. Every time you ‘fail’ to lose weight on a diet, your subconscious logs in that failure, and next time you try again, it

W

will work even harder to put you off the idea. Hypnotherapy can help you 'release' (rather than lose) weight slowly and safely by changing the out-of-date information in your subconscious mind and enhancing your natural willpower without the need for dieting. The powerful 5-Path® systematic approach I use entails you having around six sessions, with each session building on the previous one, and the weight is released slowly and gently, continuing long after the sessions have finished. It is also important to note that this is a clientcentred approach so you, the Client, are responsible for your own success, which is very empowering. After the main course of therapy is complete, we would normally schedule a couple of monthly appointments to ensure there are no further problems that need addressing but these are optional and very often not required. You will know within yourself at what point you make the shift from needing to eat food, to just enjoying it only when you are truly hungry. This change will be a permanent one because we will have removed the roots and causes of your need to eat for distraction, reward, comfort, or whatever it may be for you. If you are ready to release, rather than just lose your excess weight so that it will never come looking for you again, then please call me for a free, confidential chat on 01963 371 695. Moorcroft at the Huckies The first pieces of fine art pottery from Moorcroft were launched into the world in 1897. Designed by William Moorcroft, who was a graduate of what became the Royal College of Art in London his new art pottery was purchased strongly from the outset and numbered amongst its early customers such prestigious stores as Liberty of London, Harrods and Tiffany & Co. in New York. In 1928, after winning many gold medals and prestigious international awards, Moorcroft was appointed ‘Potters to H. M. The Queen’. In 1913, with the aid of substantial funds from Liberty, William was able to move production of his art pottery to the present factory in Sandbach Road under the name of W. Moorcroft Ltd. To maintain the tradition Walter Moorcroft assumed the

responsibilities of sole Moorcroft designer in 1945. Design continued to evolve under the stewardship of Walter, as he developed his own style which was to reach maturity in the 1950s. It was Walter who introduced many exotic flowers into Moorcroft design. Following WWII, Moorcroft perfected techniques which allowed the dramatic use of colours. This was to become the immediate identifiable “signature of Moorcroft pottery” and was considered to be a very welcome change. It was in 1986 that Sally

Tuffin took over design. Aided by Phillip Richardson, she introduced animals, birds and geometric patterns into the vision of Moorcroft art. From 1993 until 1997, design at Moorcroft was created solely by the skilled hands of ceramic graduate, Rachel Bishop. Rachel continued to enhance the international reputation of Moorcroft, building strongly on the work of her predecessors. Several of her pioneering trials and designs are for sale at Warden Hill Trading Post. In 1997, the Moorcroft Design Studio evolved and rapidly added strength to the Moorcroft name as a result of their broadly-based design ideas and artistic vision. Today, the Design Studio comprises five world-class ceramic designers who have moved design forward to the centre of the international stage in the theatre of the applied arts. Many hundreds of designs have been created and developed since their arrival, adding a powerful impetus to the evolution of design at Moorcroft. Early Moorcroft is renowned and much-prized by the most renowned auction houses across the world and regularly fetches high prices. Where other potteries tend to have periods of favour amongst pottery collectors. Moorcroft today still ranks highly and even the more modern pieces tend to be purchased as potentially valuable antiques of the future. There can be very few potteries whose outstanding reputation for both remarkable artistic and good investment qualities have been proven over more than a century!

Mighty Moggies at Cancer patient writes Charterhouse Auction Walking guide

With the summer temperatures hotting up, now is the time when classic car enthusiasts are more tempted to bring their prized motors out of the garage. Morris Minors were manufactured from 1948 to 1972 during which time over 1,300,000 were produced. However, despite such a large number made, they are an unusual sight to see today, unless you go to the Charterhouse Classic Car Auction at Sherborne Castle on Sunday 16th July where they have not one but two rare Morris Minor convertibles for sale. “The market for classic and vintage cars continues to be strong and we have seen a sharp rise in the value of a large number of cars over the past few years.” commented Charterhouse classic car specialist Matthew Whitney. “Such is the demand for Morris Minor convertibles today, we have estimated them each at £10,000 but this price does also reflect their super condition and should not be confused with cheaper cars not is such good shape.”

Charterhouse is now accepting entries for this specialist auction of Classic & Vintage Cars along with modern supercars being held at Sherborne Castle in July. They are also taking entries for their next specialist auction devoted to classic & vintage motorcycles being held on Saturday 2nd September at the Netley Marsh Motorcycle Eurojumble which is one of the main events in the calendar for bike enthusiasts. For further information regarding these auctions, or to arrange a home visit, please contact or Matthew Whitney or Nicola Holmes at Charterhouse, The Long Street Salerooms, Sherborne 01935 812277 or email images of cars for valuation at info@charterhouse-auction.com

A patient of Yeovil Hospital’s Oncology Unit, 86 year old Bill Brown, has written a walking guide for the countryside of Sherborne, to raise funds for the unit. "It has been the unfailing care and kindness of everyone at the Macmillan Cancer Unit at Yeovil Hospital that has been a beacon of hope in our lives, and it is good that in a small way we are able, through sales of my booklet, to give something back to those who have given so much”, said Mr Brown. The Sherborne Country Way, is a guide which takes you on a journey of exploration through the countryside of town and the surrounding villages in both Dorset and Somerset. The walk, a total of 31 miles, can be broken down in to 9 short sections. All aspects of the route have been explored by Bill, or his friends and family, to ensure the guide is as accurate as possible. The route uses old trackways, bridleways and

footpaths as well as country lanes which connect hamstone villages, Churches and pubs, perfect for the refreshment pit stops! The guide is available for sale for £2.95 and will be on sale in bookshops throughout Sherborne and at Yeovil Hospital. At least £1 of every sale will be donated to the Oncology Unit. Sarah Cherry, Community Fundraiser for Yeovil Hospital Charity said, “Bill has put a lot of time and effort in to creating this booklet. It is touching that he wants to donate the profits he makes from the sales of this book to the Oncology Unit. Without supporters like Bill, we would not be able to continue to make a difference for our patients here at Yeovil Hospital”. For more information on the guide or to purchase your copy from Yeovil Hospital Charity, please call Sarah Cherry, on 01935 383020 or email Sarah.Cherry@ydh.nhs.uk

‘Extending England’s shores’ The Brittan brothers, Sherborne Mercury and New Zealand he Brittan brothers were the last proprietors of the Sherborne Mercury to publish the newspaper from the printing office in Long Street, Sherborne before it was sold in 1851 and moved to Yeovil to become the Western Gazette. William Guise Brittan acquired the newspaper in July 1842 from William Webb Penny and was joined by his brother Joseph in March 1844. William had become deeply involved in the Canterbury Association for Founding a Settlement in New Zealand and the brothers’ partnership was dissolved in September 1849. William, together with his family, emigrated to New Zealand in 1850 - all his household effects having been auctioned in August 1849 - to be joined in February 1852 by Joseph and his family. William Guise Brittan was born in Gloucester in 1809. He studied medicine and made several voyages as a ship’s surgeon to India and China. In February 1842 he married Louisa Chandler, daughter of Edward an undertaker in Lambeth, in Radipole, Dorset. William then purchased the Sherborne Mercury and they moved to Castleton House, Sherborne. By April 1850, however, he had sufficiently impressed Edward Gibbon Wakefield, prime mover behind the Canterbury Association, to be appointed to the management committee. In September 1850, four ships of colonists sailed from Plymouth with the hope of founding a well-ordered and thriving English community ‘under the sanctions of the best moral and religious motives.’ Cages of small birds accompanied them for release in the settlement of Christchurch as well as pheasants and partridges for sport. Upon landing, William was appointed to the Land Office and supervised the allotment of land blocks. He himself chose 100 acres of valuable land, building his home there, and concentrated on his business interests. He did much for the local Anglican Church and is considered to be the founder of Canterbury cricket. He died on 18 June 1876, aged 67 and his eldest son, Frederick George died in 1945 - the last survivor from the ‘first four ships.’

T

Joseph Brittan was born in 1806 in Bristol, where his father was a brewer. He also qualified as a medical doctor but in January 1841 he is listed as a Director of the Weymouth Steam Navigation Company, living in Radipole, and described as a merchant. His business partnership with Charles Berjew Fooks (agent to the above company) was dissolved in September 1841. It is interesting to note that Fooks had married Ann Chandler in Lambeth 1826 (sister of Louisa) and in 1834 Joseph married Elizabeth Mary Chandler (another sister). In 1849 Elizabeth died in childbirth and in 1851 Joseph and four children and his deceased wife’s sister Sophia were living at Castleton House, Sherborne. Later that year, it is supposed he married Sophia at Gretna Green. Owing to the resulting scandal he also emigrated to New Zealand, travelling with his wife and family and Ann Fooks (his sister-in-law) whose husband was living in Melbourne, Australia. Joseph was actively involved in local politics and became the founder, proprietor and editor of The Canterbury Standard (1854-1866). He died in 1867 and Sophia in 1877. Prior to the formation of the New Zealand Company in 1839, New Zealand was not a conventional destination for English migrants and it was their system of local recruiting agents and information diffusion that helped induce potential migrants to consider New Zealand as a viable destination. In contrast, The Canterbury Association was conceived by E.G. Wakefield, who together with John Robert Godley, promoted the ideal of a colony ‘free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit sustained by the Church of England.’ Potential migrants had to be affirmed by the clergyman of their parish. Altogether some 3,500 migrants arrived before the Association came to an end in 1853. The Brittan brothers are fittingly celebrated for their contributions towards the successful establishment of Christchurch and in Sherborne are worthy of recognition as the final publishers of the Mercury, first printed in 1737.

Property, Home & Interiors Think Windows this summer! The lighter nights means summer is here but also means an increase in calls to the police about anti-social behaviour (ASB). Calls to the Police increase on average by 14% in July and August, and calls that relate specifically to ASB go up by 28%. Inconsiderate use of vehicles and littering, as well as, damage to property and rowdy, drunken behaviour and noisy neighbours are some of the top five issues that understandably upset people the most. The majority of calls happen over weekends when most people are at home; and with more people

spending time outdoors enjoying the longer days, unsurprisingly there tends to be a particular increase in calls relating to noise and nuisance behaviour. The Police also see a 10% rise in burglary during the summer months, and more than 1/3 are via an open or insecure window. With open windows being a common factor in both problems, we are encouraging everyone to Think Windows this summer! • Be a considerate neighbour, if you are outside be mindful about how your noise might be impacting on others, especially late in the evening. • Do not make life easy for thieves. Lock your doors and windows

when you are out, or even if you are out in the back garden. Make sure someone cannot reach in and open doors, grab keys or remove small items like mobile phones and tablets. For more crime prevention advice visit our website. www.avonandsomerset.police.uk Other things to think during the summer: • Be aware of others, big groups of seemingly noisy or rowdy people can be intimidating to others. Everyone should be able to enjoy our parks and open spaces without feeling intimidated or worried. • Know your limits ,whilst we want everyone to have fun in the sun we will not tolerate intimidating or antisocial behaviour and often alcohol sadly seems to be an all to common factor in a lot of incidents. •Do not drop litter, take your rubbish home. Cleaning up rubbish and collecting litter comes at a cost. It can also been dangerous for animals and children if glass bottles and other items are left lying around. • If you are affected by ASB, report it to the police or council. For more details of who to report to, visit our Neighbourhood and Community pages on the website www.avonandsomerset.police.uk

July Gardening by Mike Burks Managing Director of The Gardens Group

Summertime chores n the depths of the summer keeping everything in the garden looking good can be a challenge, particularly tubs and hanging baskets. The real secret to maintaining their health is to regularly give them plenty of water. However, wafting a spray of water onto the foliage is not sufficient, as most of it will get deflected by the foliage, making it difficult to reach the plants roots. It is much better to gently water with a can so that the amount of water given can be seen. I recommend mixing fertilizer into the watering can once a week, and if you are wanting flowers it is best to use a high potash fertilizer such as Tomorite or Maxicrop Tomato fertilizer. The high levels of potash will make growth tough and compact and will also produce beautiful flowers. To keep plants in flower beds looking fresh, it is important to stop the plants from going to seed or to fruit. Should this happen, the plant may decide that its job in keeping the species going is completed, so keep picking off the flowers as they lose their quality and as a result, fresh ones will form. This is called dead heading and ought to be carried out once a week but only if the plants are well established and we are not in a dry period, then the watering or feeding which the tubs need is not quite so important. As plants develop in flower beds and get to their maximum

height, they may need some support to avoid being blown over in summer storms. This can be achieved by using metal plant supports which are often coloured green so that they blend into the border and go unnoticed while doing their job. It is better to install them earlier in the year and to let the plants grow around them, although they can be installed at a later stage and still be effective.

village events so most nights are busy with regulars. The decor is traditional but tastefully done with beams, a wood burner when cold and a nice garden on the hillside in the summer. It is open planned with stone floors and a range of table sizes for 45 diners. If you are looking for a private party they also have a marquee outside. The menu is seasonal and traditional with a good range including the usual steaks and an excellent Sunday roast for £9.75 with smaller portions for £8.75 and a children's menu for £6.25. They also have a Senior Citizens two course lunch at £9.50 from Wednesday to Friday. Being a free house, the drinks are reasonable with a glass of house wine £4. On the evening the Dinner Club visited we were 25 and we had pre ordered from two courses at £17 or three courses at £22. As they belong to The Dining Club Card, many of us also received a further 10% discount, making it very good value indeed! The choice of starters were: Homemade tomato soup and crusty bread; Asparagus wrapped in bacon and balsamic glaze; Smoked salmon pate and Melba

toast. The most popular choice was the fresh asparagus which was excellent, well presented and delicious. There was a generous portion of home made smoked pate which again was very good - I would definitely order it again! The main courses and sauces were all home made and included: Steak and Kidney Pie with short crust pastry and new potatoes; Chicken Breast with Stilton cream sauce and sauté potatoes; Mushroom and Spinach Lasagne with salad and garlic bread; Fish Pie with Salmon, white fish and prawns in a rich parsley sauce, mashed potato and cheese topping. All dishes were hot and served with fresh, well cooked broccoli and carrots. The Steak and Ale Pie had a large crust pastry and the chicken an excellent sauce. The lasagne was a generous portion and had fantastic garlic bread and the fish pie had a good selection of fish with not too much potato. All was enjoyed. The desserts again were home made and could be ordered on the night. They included: Treacle Tart, Crème Brule, Roulade, Pavlova and Ice Cream selection. The deep treacle tart was tasty and the roulade was a good sized portion. All again described them as excellent. The Conduit Dinner Club members received a really enjoyable meal with friendly and good service. We gave our meal an excellent score and nearly all said they would return. We were made most welcome so go along, have a drink or meal and see what you think? To reserve a table call 01963 220271 and do not forget to mention The Conduit Magazine.

The Conduit Dinner Club Why not join The Conduit Dinner Club? The meals are informal and there is no joining fee. There are normally 25-40 people who come along and the Club has a cross section of ages. The evenings are a good way to get out and about to meet new people as well as try new restaurants – often with some great deals! Due to numbers we nearly always have a set menu and although everyone is asked for comments on their meal this is not for food critics. Our next meal will be a special Perigord Gourmet Evening at The Davis Hall at West Camel on Thursday 6th July. Everyone is welcome whether a Club member or not and will be in aid of MacMillan Cancer Care. Franchesca Dening.

Financial Planning

by Edward Covill, Ten Go

by Mark Salter, Financial Planner.

“Morals, Can’t afford ‘em Guv” said Shaw’s Doolittle when asked by Pickering if he had any hose who can afford them are the greedy energy companies who relish fleecing us with high charges. All political parties want to control them but whatever happens in the short term, prices are bound to rise. EDF, if they ever overcome the difficulties with the new power stations at Hinkley Point and Cumberland, will charge twice the market rate for electricity. The lagoon at Swansea, if it gets the go ahead will be amongst the most expensive in the world. Not wishing to take part in the rights and wrongs of 'fracking', without it, gas prices are bound to rise. With the holiday season upon us, we give a few tips on how to save. With the falling pound, this is particularly important. The cheapest way to spend money abroad will almost always be on a card. They easily beat the Bureau de Change when you buy currency and using your normal debit Card can be expensive. Metro bank is unique in offering fee-free transactions. Very often, prepaid travel cards offer the best option. You load your card with cash and then make cash withdrawals and pay for purchases with it. Monzo, which you can access via an app on your smart-phone, is one of the better choices. Amongst the NHS offers for members is Purple Parking near airports which offer up to 60% off. Discounts with AA are up to 34%. For those still undecided, the NHS also offers discounts on cruises. If travelling by ferry, go to ferry.com to get the cheapest route. Until recently, petrol prices have been up to 19% lower in

T

many continental countries, but there have been recent increases abroad. Prices can be checked on petrolprices.com which has daily updates on 8,000 stations. Car repair is usually more expensive on the continent and you will need extra cover if you have a standard UK. policy. Exchange rates fluctuate wildly, but some firms, such as Sainsburys and Tesco let you order up to 30 days in advance and you can take the money when the rate moves in your favour. he media would have us believe that a successful investment experience comes from picking stocks, timing our entry and exit points, making accurate predictions and outguessing the market. Is there a better way? It is true that some people do get lucky by making bets on certain stocks and sectors, getting in or out at the right time or correctly guessing movements in interest rates or currencies. However, depending on luck this is simply not a sustainable strategy. The alternative approach to investment may not sound as exciting, but is also a lot less work. It essentially means reducing, as far as possible the influence of fortune, taking a long-term view and starting with your own needs and risk appetite. Of course, risk can never be completely eliminated and there are no guarantees about anything in life. However, you can increase your chances of a successful investment experience if you keep these 10 guidelines in mind: 1. Let the market work for you. Prices of securities in competitive financial markets represent the collective judgment of millions of investors based on current information. So, instead of second guessing the market, work with it. 2. Investment is not speculation. What is promoted in the media as investment is often just speculation. It is about making short-term and concentrated bets. Few people succeed this way, particularly after you take fees into account. 3. Take a long-term view. Over time, capital markets provide a positive rate of return. As an investor risking your capital you have a right to the share of that wealth, but keep in mind, the return is not there every day, month or year. 4. Consider the drivers of returns. Differences in returns are explained by certain dimensions identified by academic research as pervasive, persistent and robust. As such it makes sense to build portfolios around these. 5. Practise smart diversification. A sound portfolio does not just capture reliable sources of expected return, it reduces unnecessary risks like holding too few stocks, sectors or countries. Diversification helps to overcome that. 6. Avoid market timing. You never know which markets will be the best performers from year

T

email: info@theconduitmagazine.co.uk

to year. Being well diversified means you are positioned to capture the returns whenever and wherever they appear. The last 12 months has been a great example of this. 7. Manage your emotions. People who let their emotions dictate their decisions can end up buying at the top when greed is dominant and selling at the bottom when fear takes over. The alternative is to remain realistic. 8. Look beyond the headlines. The media is by necessity focused on the short term. This can give you a distorted impression of the market. Keep up with the news by all means, but you do not have to act on it. 9. Keep costs low. Day to day moves in the market are temporary, but costs are permanent. Over time, they can put a real dent in your wealth plans. That is why it makes sense to be mindful of fees and expenses. 10. Focus on what you can control. You have no control over the markets, but in consultation with an advisor acting in your interests you can create a low-cost, diversified portfolio that matches your needs and risk tolerance. That is the whole story in a nutshell. Investment is really not that complicated. In fact, the more complicated that people make it sound,in Radipole, Dorset, the more you should be sceptical. The truth is markets are so competitive that you can save yourself much time, trouble and expense by letting them work for you. That means structuring a portfolio across the broad dimensions of return, being mindful of cost and focusing on your own needs and circumstances, not what the media is trying to sell you.

Potential Pitfalls for Airbnb Landlords t seems harmless enough, allowing visitors to the area to use your spare room or even the whole property for a few nights and you make some money out of it. This is an increasing trend with the rise of Airbnb and similar websites. Tenants and leaseholders offering up their available space need to ensure that they are not putting themselves at risk of breaching their lease and facing the possibility of losing their property. Tenants living in a property under an Assured Shorthold Tenancy will undoubtedly have a clause in their contract

I

preventing them from using the property for business. The contract may also state that it must only be used as a single private residence. Allowing people to occupy your property for money is generally considered business use and will also breach the single private residential use clause. You could be faced with eviction by your landlord. Now, imagine the effect of this on a long leaseholder with a lease for say 99 years? If the lease specifies the clauses in the previous paragraph, the freeholder could take steps to bring your lease to an end.

Court cases have been decided against the leaseholders for taking money from short term guests in breach of their lease. Partying and disruptive Airbnb users could also cause problems where leases state that there must be no nuisance caused to neighbours or where you are not allowed to part with or share possession of the Property. Insurance can be invalidated by allowing temporary occupants to stay in your property and leaseholders may be faced with substantial losses which will not be met by their insurance. Mortgage companies could well call in their loan and start possession proceedings if you are allowing Airbnb occupants to stay in your property without their consent. The above of course also affects London properties but in addition, they are required to have planning permission where there are short term lets for over 90 days in a year. Enforcement action is a real possibility where this is not done. It may seem like easy money but freeholders and leaseholders should check the terms of their lease before embarking on the Airbnb route. It may end up costing you significantly more than you earn from doing it. For advice on all aspects of landlord and tenant law, contact Jacqui Swann on 01935 846254 or jacqui.swann@battens.co.uk

to 5.00pm at The Malthouse Gallery, East Lambrook go along to ‘High Adventure’ an Exhibition of new work from South America and Scotland by Moish Sokal. Travelling watercolour artist Moish Sokal has returned from his search for his mentor artist Benito that he lost track of in South America over 34 years ago. The excitement of this high adventure, discovering new subjects to paint in a new fresh style is what this forthcoming exhibition is all about. Alongside these exotic paintings from Peru, Sokal will also show work he painted following his first ever visit to Scotland when he explored the romantic west coast and also other subjects he discovered whilst exploring England. For more details call 07812 837825. Then at the Ilminster Arts Centre from Monday 10th July to Friday 4th August scratch beneath the surface and all is not always what it seems. ‘Beyond the Surface’ is an exhibition which brings together an eclectic group of artists whose work in a variety of mediums, pushes the boundaries of what might be expected. Paint used impressionistically to capture light and movement, or applied precisely to record the detail of botanical subjects, or gesturally to explore the process of mark making, whether by chance or design. Textiles that experiment with different media and design concepts, crochet that goes ‘freeform’, hyperreal landscape photographs, and mixed media mosaics that explore loss, grief and what it means to live a creative life.

Get Set for Summer at Melbury t is ‘High Summer’ in the fashion world and the latest ranges from the designers are in our shops now. One of our favourites at the moment is from Adini, with their range based on ancient Japanese Shibori dyeing techniques. Shibori is really ‘on trend’ at the moment, experiencing a real surge of interest, and is one of the oldest Indigo dying techniques in Japan. The Adini range is based on prints of Shibori designs and looks fantastic. Their fluid kaftan in particular is great as a beach cover up, or it can be dressed up too - so versatile! If you prefer more colour, their primrose print shirt in

I

vintage blue moss crepe is really pretty too. In keeping with this traditional trend, we have got stunning dresses and skirts from Nila Rubia, which have been really popular this summer. Their wonderful 100% cotton fabrics are hand block printed in Rajasthan in a tradition that dates back to the 12th Century. They research and restore ancient print designs and re-work them in unique colour combinations to create a subtle blend of East meets West. Their crinkle finish is also immensely practical and they can be twisted to fit nicely into your suitcase - no ironing required which is definitely a bonus! From Sahara, our top selling brand, we have gorgeous cool linens, simple and incredibly stylish, contemporary, yet timeless, we really love this shirt which features a soft white and shadow grey variegated stripe in cool linen with a Nehru collar - elegance personified! As well as the clothing, we have got some amazing kimono jackets from One Hundred Stars and Thought, and a huge range of scarves too, some of which are great sizes and could double up as sarongs and wraps. To finish off your outfit, we have got jewellery of every conceivable style, to match any outfit - so pay us a visit in Sherborne or Dorchester and get set for Summer!

The world is specialising but so are we... t has already been a very busy year so far with no signs of things changing as both our surgeries continue to grow and we strive to improve our services for both patients and owners alike. In this day and age the world is becoming more specialised and veterinary medicine and surgery is no different. The way to think of your vet is much like your own GP but obviously we carry out many medical and surgical procedures ourselves. However for every discipline there are veterinary specialists available; Orthopaedic Surgeons, Ophthalmologists, Dermatologists, Neurologists, etc. Although we are a team of experienced vets with a number undertaking certificates, it is important to realise our limitations and sometimes we need to involve people who are specialists in their field and may know a little more! We have a very close relationship with many of the referral centres locally and they are often available to discuss more complex medical cases over the telephone avoiding the need to refer your pet. There are however, certain procedures we just cannot carry out on site such as MRI scans and spinal surgeries; we just do not have the facilities or expertise in primary practice. The downside of referral is often the cost involved and travel time. One such service we now offer is to arrange for mobile orthopaedic surgeons to come to our practice and carry out more complex surgeries on bones and joints that would otherwise have to be referred. This has been well received as not only do pets and

I

owners not have to travel large distances but we can reduce the costs of the procedures as we do not have the same overheads as a large referral hospital. We have used their services to carry out fracture repairs, joint arthroscopies and correction of congenital limb deformities but by far the most common procedure is treatment of cruciate ligament disease. We now seem to see this far more commonly than we used to and there are probably several reasons for this; the ownership of large breed dogs is increasing (of which many are predisposed) and we are better at diagnosing and treating this disease than previously. The cruciate ligament is one of the main stabilising structures of the knee and cruciate rupture in dogs is usually as a result of degeneration of the ligament over time rather than trauma. Unfortunately this means the joint is usually arthritic by the time surgery is necessary and this arthritis will progress (albeit at a slower rate than if surgery had not been carried out). This degeneration is usually present in both knees and approximately 60% of dogs will suffer rupture of the cruciate ligament in the other knee within 12-18mths. We have been very happy with this service and the feedback from owners has also been excellent. In time I think the use of mobile specialists for various disciplines will become more commonplace and we already provide an ophthalmology specialist at the Sherborne Castle Country Fair each year to screen for hereditary eye disease. The world is changing and its important the Veterinary Profession keeps pace!

An urgent look is needed to stop a new generation of touchscreen entertainment systems in car dashboards from causing a surge in injuries and deaths on the road, according to road safety campaigners. Leading manufacturers including Fiat, Toyota and Honda have released models that allow motorists to check apps such as Twitter and Facebook on the move. Ford and Nissan also now allow drivers to connect to their smart phones to touch screen displays although they have already had to change the buttons so Welding - Diagnostics - Air Condition that it is less Tyres - Brakes - Exhausts - Clutches distracting. Campaigners maintain that screens, the size of small TVs, pinging with updates from phones and social media, are a potential death threat that encourages Sherborne Road, Milborne Port, drivers to take their Nr Sherborne, DT9 5AU eyes off the road. It will be interesting to www.crackmoregarage.com see what insurance companies will do with future accidents involving touch screens.
