MOVIES AROUND THE VILLAGES & TOWNS A UNITED KINGDOM (12A) This tells the true story of Seretse Khama, heir to the throne of Bechuanaland a British protectorate, now modern-day Botswana, and Ruth Williams, the London office worker he married in the 1940s in spite of fierce opposition from their families and the British and South African Governments. Asante, in collaboration with the screenwriter Guy Hibbert, has managed to recover once again a long-forgotten chapter of Britain’s history – one of political intrigue, “subversive” racism and colonialism – one in which love crosses all boundaries and taboos. Starring Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo. (Showing at Somerton) JACKIE (15) Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy (Natalie Portman) fights through grief and trauma to regain her faith, console her children, and define her husband’s historic legacy. The film is a portrait of one of the most important and tragic moments in American history. Known for her extraordinary dignity and poise, here we see a portrait of the First Lady as she fights to establish her husband’s legacy and the world of ‘Camelot’ that she created and loved so well. (Showing at Hinton St George and South Petherton) LA LA LAND (12A) Tells the story of Mia, an aspiring actress, and Sebastian, a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams. Starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling Showing at Leigh and Sturminster Newton) LION (PG) In 1986, five year old Saroo lives in India with his poor but happy rural family. On a trip with his brother, he gets lost and soon finds himself alone on a decommissioned passenger train going to Calcutta, 1500 miles away from home. Now totally lost in an alien urban environment and too young to identify either himself or his home to the authorities, Saroo struggles to survive as a street child until he is sent to an orphanage. Adopted by the Brierley family in Tasmania, he

grows up in a loving, prosperous home. But for all his material good fortune, Saroo finds himself plagued by memories of his lost family. He tries to search for them but only when he has an epiphany does he realize not only the answers he needs, but also the steadfast love that he has always had from his loved ones in both worlds. Starring Dev Patel, David Wenham and Nicole Kidman. (Showing at Halstock, Sherborne, South Petherton and West Camel) VICEROY’S HOUSE (12A) Viceroy’s House in Delhi was the home of the British rulers of India. After 300 years, that rule was coming to an end. For six months in 1947, Lord Mountbatten, great grandson of Queen Victoria, assumed the post of the last Viceroy, charged with handing India back to its people. The story unfolds within that great House. Upstairs lived Mountbatten together with his wife and daughter, downstairs lived their 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants. As the political elite – Nehru, Jinnah and Gandhi – converged on the House to wrangle over the birth of independent India, conflict erupted. A decision was taken to divide the country and create a new Muslim homeland: Pakistan. It was a decision whose consequences reverberate to this day. The film examines these events through the prism of a marriage as well as a romance. Starring Hugh Bonneville and Gillian Anderson. (Showing at Castle Cary)

Property, Home & Interiors Best Addresses to come with Air Quality Alert... Those of you who have let houses know that you have to provide all types of certificates including energy efficient for the property. However, Estate Agents have said that pollution has become an increasingly important consideration for buyers, so much so that property listings may have to adapt to inform buyers of air quality in their neighbourhood. 'I do not think it will be long before it is compulsory to display pollution information' Mark Hayward, Chief Executive of the National Association of Estate Agents. This would mean that traditionally expensive areas in the middle of cities would come with a health warning, putting them on par with properties along busy routes. In London, much of the centre, including very expensive areas such as Mayfair and Park Lane, regularly exceeds safe air quality levels. However, this would also affect busy roads all over the country including some in our readership area.

Why Families are Building a 'Graddy' Once we had a granny annexe but today families are adding a 'graddy' annexe for a graduate child who has returned home, or for younger offspring. Of all the annexes in England and Wales, 40% were built in the past two years to homeowners who are unable to relocate because of Stamp Duty and mortgage lending curbs which is making them stay put and renovate. Most annexes are still for elderly relatives. However there has been an increase in 'graddy' annexes as parents tackle the problem of 'twentysomethings' struggling to afford high rents and unable to get on the property ladder themselves. Needless to say, young adults still want their independence and do

not want to move back into their old bedroom so this is the ideal solution. This way they can save money they would otherwise lose on the open rental market and start saving for a deposit so they can move out. An annexe can vary in price from about £25,000 to £160,000 and most have a timber frame and are timber-clad. Those built in concrete are likely to be deemed to be permanent construction which will require planning permission. However, the Mobile Homes Act permits constructions that are as large as 20' (6m) by 60' (18m) but they must conform to certain construction rules. Speak to your local authority and they will be able to advice.

Times are changing Sherborne’s Forgotten s I sit to write this article it is 7.40pm on 5th of May. Today was the first day working out of our new practice on Preston Road. So many months of planning, so much hard work and finally we are in. It will take a while to get used to as it is just so different to our old site and if I am honest it felt a little bit like working at someone else's practice today! We are all really proud of our new surgery but it is important to remember that people come to our practice because of the staff who work here and the job that they do on a daily basis but we now have a surgery that thoroughly does them justice. Have a look at our face book page for a sneak peek or pop in to say hello and have a nose around. Now it is time to put my vet hat back on again. There is evidence the numbers of ticks affecting dogs and people is increasing and this is likely due to increased travel abroad and climate change. Few would disagree given the weather we have had in April and early May this year. Ticks are arachnids and closely related to spiders, they stand on the ends of grass and vegetation waving their legs waiting for an animal to brush past so they can climb aboard. Ticks can cause irritation and localised reactions but more importantly are vectors for a number of serious diseases in both dogs and people. The most well know and widespread is Lyme disease. It is caused by a bacterial infection and causes vague flulike symptoms, a lameness which shifts from limb to limb,

A

and fever. A classic ‘bulls-eye’ lesion is found in both dogs and people alike. Appropriate antibiotics are effective once a diagnosis is made. Ehrlichiosis and Babesiosis are less common and rarer in the UK than other parts of Europe but we are now seeing cases diagnosed in Southern England. With increasing pet travel and gradual climate change, both these diseases

will become more commonplace in this country. There are several ways to prevent ticks but there are two treatments we routinely recommend. The first is a tablet called Bravecto; it kills fleas and ticks and lasts 3 months. The second is a medicated collar called Seresto. It prevents fleas and ticks attaching, is safe, effective and given it lasts 7-8 months offers excellent value. Combining either of these products with an effective monthly wormer such as Milquantel provides complete protection against all internal and external parasites. With the increase in pet travel abroad, parasitic infections and other exotic diseases are on the rise so if you do travel, it is important to contact one of our surgeries for advice on appropriate preventative medicine but even at home, without protection our pets are still at significant risk.

Botanical Artist he Victorians considered the painting of flowers was a morally improving activity for women and undoubtedly there were many middle-class ladies who enjoyed it merely as a pleasant pursuit. There were several dedicated women, however, who made significant contributions to both the science and art of botanical painting but who have been largely overlooked by history. Such was Diana Ruth Wilson (1886-1969), who was born at The Green (Sherborne’s former Angel Hotel) in 1886, the daughter of

T

Thomas Ward Wilson and Augusta Jarvis. She was educated at St. Anthony’s and from 1900-1902 at Sherborne Girls’ School. Thomas, a popular housemaster at the Boys’ School, frequently took Diana out with his students on field trips where she became inspired by his passion for natural history. Another influence was Littleton Powys, one of the famous literary brothers, with whom she often “compared notes on flowers, birds and bugs”. Kathleen Moore, Deputy Head at the Girls’ School, further encouraged her potential. When she was only 16, Diana started painting a remarkable series of local flora directly from nature straight onto the page, continuing after Thomas’s retirement when the family moved to Uploders House, near Bridport. In 1912 she travelled alone to Brazil to stay with her cousin Dorothy in Sao Paulo. En route she visited Dr. Willis, Director of the Jardim Botanico in Rio, with the aim of providing specimens for his herbarium. She was also asked to illustrate certain butterflies for Professor Poulton, a leading entymologist. In 1914, she married biologist Philip Furley Fyson, a lecturer at the Presidency College in Madras; together they became pioneering

botanists promoting conservation and producing the first illustrated Flora of the Southern Indian foothills. Their work in the Shola Forests opened up the way for scientific exploration of the Western Ghats and the area has since become a Biosphere Reserve. The Fysons are still greatly respected among Indian botanists and Diana was affectionately called “The Lady of the Palms and Paddy-Fields”. Diana never forgot her native town and towards the end of her life in Northumbria she started corresponding with Oliver Holt, a Sherborne School master, art historian and naturalist, with whom she reminisced about riding her pony “throughout all that lovely countryside”. When Diana died in 1969, Oliver suggested to her daughter Ruth that the early watercolours be donated to Sherborne Museum and he personally paid for their conservation and care. Our watercolour collection is significant because it shows the development

of Diana’s considerable skills and provides a valuable record of plants in this locality at the turn of the 20th century. The paintings are intrinsically aesthetically pleasing and are well worth studying just for themselves. The Museum is open from Tues-Sat 10.30am-4.30pm from now until 14th December. Admission is free.

June Gardening by Mike Burks Managing Director of The Gardens Group

Wildlife friendly gardening for small spaces hen people think of wildlife havens for birds, insects and mammals, they will naturally think of a large piece of untouched land in the countryside. However, gardens are a crucial habitat for most creatures and by introducing certain plants, it can encourage wildlife to thrive. TMany gardeners now choose plants not only for their own benefit but also for local wildlife. When planning a wildlife friendly garden, it is important to remember garden size should not be an issue, Space for such plants can be provided by even the smallest of gardens; it is always best to choose a plant that is the right fit for your garden. For smaller spaces, there are a variety of smaller shrubs, such as the Mexican Orange Blossom, also known as Choisya Aztec Pearl, which has dark green foliage and white star-shaped flowers. An ‘Aztec Pearl’ grows two or three feet and this small shrub holds a mass of scented foliage in the spring and sporadically throughout the year. A close relative is the

W

Choisya Aztec Gold, which too is an evergreen with just as many flowers and cheerful foliage throughout the year. Another dwarf form of an old favourite is the Buddleia ‘Purple Chip’, which grows to a manageable three feet and is perfect for smaller spaces as it is quite happy sitting in a large container. The sweetly scented, deep blue flowers smother the plant in the summer and is an instant attraction for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. As it does not self-seed, to keep it flowering well it will need to be hard pruned in March, this promotes lots of fresh growth and in turn lots of flowers too. In the herbaceous garden, the Verbena Bonariensis is a superb choice, it has tall stems of pink flowers which seem to float three or four feet above the ground on

18

slender stems. Being away from the foliage of other plants, makes the flowers an ideal landing spot for flying insects and butterflies in particular. Another variety that drives the insects mad is the Sedum Autumn Joy, which has ‘blue’ foliage with vibrant pink flowers which form in the late summer. Herbaceous salvias are perfect for most gardens, they are easy to keep, come in a range of colours and are magnets for bees and butterflies. For a vibrant blue to accent in the border of the garden, Salvia Caradonna is perfect! It will grow upright to two feet with each growing shoot sporting a violet spike of flower, with stems that are almost black to really make the colours stand out. Finally, bedding plants which are most commonly used to frame the garden and can look fabulous all year long, are actually great sources of food for wildlife. When choosing a bedding plant to encourage wildlife, it is usually best to choose single flowers over doubles, mostly because insects find it easier reaching the less elaborate blooms. Ageratum, in particular the High Tide variety, tends to be a very popular dining venue for beneficial insects, especially bees due to its heady scent.

Himalayan Hut at Minterne Gardens One of the exciting projects just completed for Minterne Gardens in the spring was the construction of an authentic Himalayan Hut. Traditionally these huts were built to provide mountain climbers and trekkers with a safe, comfortable and inviting lodging in which to rest, refuel and if necessary sit out inclement weather patterns. The Head Gardener, Mark Bobin and Maintenance Manager, Mark Mumford constructed the Himalayan Hut from materials sourced entirely from Minterne Garden. Gathering materials close to the area is in keeping with a typical hut construction - in the Himalayas most sites are on steep mountains. The hut is constructed from stones, rocks and fossils to complete 3 walls; felled Larch from the garden was used for the frame, opening onto a small veranda and a tin roof top it off. A range of rock-loving plants will be introduced into natural crevices in the outer walls including Campanula with its blue and rose tints and ferns, all of which will add to the authenticity of the building and provide a

Free initial consultation

rainbow feast for the eyes. Other plants include Inula, Hookeri and Astrantia Major. Adorning the Himalayan Hut are prayer flags - a colourful rectangular cloth, often found strung along mountain ridges and peaks high in the Himalayas. They are used to bless the surrounding countryside and for other purposes. Prayer flags are believed to have originated with Bon. In Bon, shamanistic Bonpo used primary-colored plain flags in healing ceremonies in Nepal. They are unknown in other branches of Buddhism. Garden visitors can enjoy quiet contemplation at Minterne Garden’s Himalayan Hut after enjoyinga Cream Tea on the East Terrace overlooking the lake.

Jewellery & Gems

Jewellery Loss & Damage t is unlikely you will have suffered a loss like this! However if you happen to lose or damage one of your favourite pieces of jewellery, you will almost certainly be distressed and unfortunately enquiries from customers who have suffered a burglary are not uncommon. We are also frequently asked by customers to rescue damaged rings; examples over the years having been crushed in a door jamb, chewed by the dog and even a collection of rings accidentally burnt in a fire! Regrettably it is not possible to compensate for everything, but once you come to terms

the hallmark give its age? If so is it antique? Gems: Are those white stones diamonds or simulants (or even synthetic)? What are those blue stones? Ssapphire, iolite, tanzanite or something rarer? The green ones… are they emerald, green sapphire, tourmaline, tsavorite? What tests do I need to carry out to be certain? There is also the fundamental question .."what is this valuation to be used for?" Is it to provide a replacement price for insurance, an estimate of auction price or a value for division between parties (e.g.. Probate).

with the emotional issues, the next stage is usually to address your loss in money terms. That means turning to your insurance policy and the first thing they will need is an up to date jewellery valuation. Antiques Road Show makes fascinating television but it does give the misleading impression of "instant valuations". This just does not happen: you do not see all the detailed examination and research that goes on before the camera is turned on! Here are some of the many questions that may be raised over an item of jewellery:Metal: Are there any hallmarks ? Is this yellow metal gold or gold- plated base metal? If gold, what carat value? If it is white metal is it platinum, palladium, silver or white gold? What carat value is it? Does

All these decisions completely depend on a very detailed valuation carried out by a specialist and appropriately qualified jewellery valuer, whose work is presented as a detailed and illustrated folio: it is also a legal document. To meet the growing demand for this service, we at PSJ Jewellers are excited to offer a new regular Valuations Day service. Starting on Friday 30th June and continuing on the last Friday of each month, our professional IRV* valuer will be with us throughout the day. How much money do you really need for the rest of your life? he fact is the majority of people have no idea where they are heading financially. They may have assets, investments, high levels of income or even their own business, but most people have no idea what it all means or what sort of financial future awaits them. On the one hand they do not want to retire too early, only to discover their money runs out. On the other hand they do not want to retire too late and end up working when they should have been playing! Then again, because of paying tax all their lives and the significant amount of tax payable on death, they do not want to die with too much money… However they are afraid to spend it or give it away! I strongly believe that what we all need to know is: “How much money do I really need for the rest of my life?” Having an insight into how much money you need is often enlightening and puts you in control of your future. It can give you the freedom to live your life smarter and for your money to become more meaningful. After all, life is not a rehearsal and needs to be lived to the full. So what is your number? It is the amount of money you need for the rest of your life - not just to survive but to live life to the maximum. Is it 1 milliom or 2 million? A lot more or a lot less? You need to know! Without knowing your number, how can you plan? How can you decide what is best for you and your family. The great thing about discovering your number is that when you have

Peace of Mind Paperwork aving an up-to-date Will, Lasting Powers of Attorney and a simple list of your assets will make dealing with your affairs much easier both during your lifetime and when you have passed away. If you lose ‘mental capacity’ even if only temporarily, leaving you unable to deal with your own finances, then family and friends are faced with a difficult situation. Not even your spouse or civil partner has the authority to operate with anything financial or legal on your behalf. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place, someone has to make an application to the Court of Protection to become a ‘Deputy’. This is a lengthy and costly process and to be avoided. The answer is to have a LPA in place. LPAs can cover property and financial decisions and also health and welfare decisions. It is your opportunity to legally appoint one or more people to make decisions on your behalf. They are invaluable and mean that the people that you choose are in control. In your Will you decide whom your executors are and whom should benefit from your estate. Whether you have close family or not you should not think the

Intestacy rules (that apply when someone does not have a Will) will do what you wish. Close family may not inherit in the shares that you would choose and in the absence of close family, the rules do not look to benefit your friends or favoured

charities but instead will leave your estate to be being divided between remote relatives or even the Crown. Why make a list of my assets? Property, bank accounts and pensions are fairly easy to identify but in this day and age you may also have ‘digital assets’, perhaps an online bank account? Your list of assets and appropriate passwords will be invaluable to those helping you with your affairs, whatever the circumstances. Take control now and you will have peace of mind. Your Care Matters

Health & Wellbeing

by Claire Quinton, Proprietor/Consultant, CQB Care Consultancy

by Niki Cassar

Care in the Community: Your Personal Budget reviously we looked at the care needs criteria and assessment process, which can lead to a personal budget to meet your needs. A personal budget is the amount the Local Authority determine your care and support needs will cost, including their contribution and anything you are assessed to pay. In Somerset there are two options for your personal budget to be spent for community based services and in Dorset a third option. The first, and most ‘traditional’ way, is through a service commissioned by the Local Authority, where they arrange the services for you. Usually with a Care Agency. With this option you will have limited choice who provides your care because the Local Authority will have ‘preferred’ Providers. This could be a disadvantage. Before choosing this option you should ask who the Commissioned Providers are and decide whether you will be happy with this. There are possible advantages with this option. If the Local Authority is commissioning the service, then cost negotiations are between them and the provider, not you. Timewise, this again lies with the Local Authority in setting up the package and any changes. This could also lead to disadvantages for if things are not working out; how is your voice heard and what changes can you request? The second option is a Direct Payment. The Local Authority passes your personal budget to you and you arrange your own care and support. This can be through Care Agencies, employing a Personal Assistant, or with a self-employed carer– such as a Micro-Provider in Somerset on Small Good Stuff. The obvious advantage of this option is choice. You may worry that this option will be too much

P

30

for you to manage, with arranging the services, paying the invoices and possibly even taking on the role of employer. There are options with this; you can have a ‘Managed Account’ whereby the Local Authority or an Organisation they appoint deals with the paperwork, or a family member or someone who helps you with your finances can do this for you. One important aspect to consider is cost. Local Authorities will usually have set rates for Direct Payments, and those rates may be different for Agencies and Personal Assistants.. The rates charged for your choice may exceed the rate set. This may mean you have to; ‘top-up’ the shortfall, choose a cheaper provider, or if there are extenuating reasons for your choice of that particular provider the Local Authority may need to look at increasing your personal budget. The final option for how your personal budget is an Individual Service Fund (ISF). This option is only available in Dorset and moy Somerset. There are similarities between an ISF and Direct Payments. With an ISF the amount is transferred to an oirganisation who manage and arrange the care and support for you. You choose which organisation manages the ISF, which is the difference from Direct Payments. ISFs can be administered by Charitable and not-for-profit organisations and even Care Agencies. If you choose a Care Agency to hold your ISF you do not have to choose them to meet all or some of your needs. Whoever you choose will discuss with you your needs. CQB Care Consultancy have over 14 years experience in Adult Social Care, Funding and Finance and over 17 years experience in Welfare Benefits.

Bluebirds fly, so why oh why can’t I? ear of flying, also known as aerophobia or aviophobia, affects an astonishing 25% of the population, although some studies suggest that as many as 40% of people suffer some degree of anxiety about flying, although they may be too embarrassed to admit it to friends or colleagues. Right now, many people are planning their summer break, which may well include a return flight. For some, there will be a pleasurable sense of anticipation when they think about their forthcoming holiday, but for those who have a fear of flying, the very thought of going to the airport and boarding a plane will be filling them with dread and bringing them out in a cold sweat. There are, of course, alternative ways to travel, but unless the holiday is taken in the beautiful but often chilly British Isles, valuable time is lost by travelling abroad by boat and train. Most people are pretty sure they know when their flying fear first started, usually as the result of a flight with a lot of air turbulence, or a situation such as an emergency landing due to a maintenance problem. In fact, as with all fears, fear of flying is merely a symptom of a much earlier fear, stored by the subconscious mind sometime before the age or five. For that reason, the underlying fear needs to be identified and neutralised in order to permanently remove the flying fear. If you read my articles regularly, you will know that I have written about the function of the subconscious mind many times, but here it is again. Imagine that something relatively

F

insignificant happened when you were, let us say, three or four, that made you more fearful than you needed to be, because of your age and lack of experience. The subconscious mind stored this event with the accompanying feeling of fear and this became the foundation stone to which other fears were added within the subconscious over the ensuing years, whenever you experienced events that you perceived as frightening. At some point in your life, you may have had a particularly scary experience. For example: a car accident, being attacked, or nearly drowning; and the extreme fear you experienced at the time was added to the fear folder in the subconscious mind. As a result, you may have become increasingly aware of a specific fear; for example: fear of driving on busy roads or fear of deep water. Fear of flying will always have some earlier roots totally unconnected with flying. Hypnotherapy can safely help you to overcome your fear of flying permanently - or any other unresolved fear. Start the process of being free to fly like the bluebirds sooner rather than later, and in that way, there is no time pressure on either you or the hypnotherapist! If you would like to know more about how hypnotherapy can help you overcome your fears, please call Niki Cassar for a free confidential chat on 01963 371 695. want to see more about what our customers are saying about us. The Foreign Exchange Bureau is having an exceptional year, with sales well ahead of last year and I put this mainly down to Sarah, our Foreign Exchange Specialist, who ensures daily that we have the very best rates. The word is certainly getting around and people are travelling from far and wide to take advantage. Where have we travelled recently to improve our knowledge of the world? I was lucky enough to sample my very first river cruise when I was invited by Titan Travel to experience the MS Serenade 1 on the Rhine. I must say that I can really see why this type of holiday is so popular and I had a fantastic time. Sharon has been globe-trotting and visited Las Vegas, South Africa and Malta. Victoria, who we have

welcomed back from her maternity leave, has visited the stunning city of Barcelona. Feel free to call in and see us as we would love to share our experience with you over a cup of coffee or tea.

So what is keeping us busy? Well, we are still finding customers some great offers for 2017 so it is still not too late to book, but it is 2018 holidays that are probably more in demand. Most of the major cruise, river cruise and escorted tour suppliers have launched their programmes for 2018 early this year and customers are taking advantage of early booking offers such as buy one get one free, and huge savings to secure their first choice for 2018. As the main agent in the South West for the likes of Titan Travel, Saga, Viking River Cruises, Riviera Travel, to name but a few, we are busier than ever. So that is Miles Morgan Travel news for the first part of 2017 roll on the next half. I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Out & About French Navy's Show of Force at Air Day Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton will once again receive tremendous support from the French Navy at this year’s International Air Day on Saturday 8th July. Making its only UK flying display appearance of this year, the French naval power's thunderous fast jet role demonstration will return to Air Day. The pair of Rafale M carrier fighters, which won the Best Fixed Wing Display award last year, will join Air Day’s fast jet line up alongside the RAF Typhoon, Belgian Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon and Czech Air Force Gripen and ALCA L-159 pair. Equipping three squadrons based at Landivisiau on the other side of the English Channel - the fast, agile and heavily-armed Rafale M can switch roles in real-time. Launching from the mighty Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, the Rafales are regularly on global frontline deployments. The French Navy's static contribution comprises an Atlantique Mk2 maritime patrol aircraft and a Westland Lynx HAS4 small ships’ helicopter; both are relatively rare visitors to these shores. While all Royal Navy Lynx models are now retired, the French Navy still has in service 21 HAS2 and HAS4 variants. Fitted with radar, sonar, acoustic data transmission and FLIR (forwardlooking infrared) systems. The flying display is truly shaping up to be an impressive one which is reflected by ticket sales to date. There are only a few places left available in some of the enclosure

packages which organisers anticipate will be sold out in the coming weeks. Discounted advance tickets are now also available over the counter at participating Tourist Information Centres. Further information and online booking available at www.royalnavy.mod.uk/yeovilton-airday

Mediaeval Jousting at Sherborne Castle Sherborne Castle welcomes back the Knights of Royal England on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th June to present Spectacular Jousting Tournamentst to these colourful reenactments of the mediaeval equivalent of extreme sports… fully armoured, valiant warriors mounted on spirited chargers competing for the crowd’s favours in a breath-taking display of speed and courage in this, the Sport of Kings of yesteryear. Two teams will do battle on their fantastic Andalusian horses to test each Knights courage; including riding against the ‘Quintain’, a mediaeval training devise, spearing and picking up the heads of enemies from the ground or lancing small rings and ‘Tilting’ - one Knight rides against another Knight along the ‘tilt rail’ to unseat their opponent: all these feats of courage are carried out at the gallop. Not all jousting was on horseback back in the day. Hand to hand skills will also be on display using mediaeval weapons …..swords, shields, ball and chain, war hammer, mace and quarter staves…..and woe betide any out of favour squire or knight, as they face being dragged around the arena behind a galloping horse or

being put on the ‘tilt rail’ to fall prey to Knights with their lances! Tournaments will take place each day at 12.30pm and 3.00pm, both displaying different sets of skills, and at the end of each day a winner will be crowned. Each 50 minute competition is full of action and taken very seriously by all Knights. Lord Anthony of Bolinbroke, our local Lord, will preside over the proceedings and decide the winner of each Tournament: he has the power to punish or rebuke any participants who displease him, and is a great advocate of less talk more action! To entertain you there will be at full programme of attractions and events including a mediaeval encampment, so you can see what life was like for the more lowly of the Kings subjects. You can ‘have a go’ at long bow archery, try on armour; see falconers at work and a trebuchet in action. A jester will be ‘fooling around’, with a traditional story teller spreading the word about tales of Knights daring acts, of romance and there could even be a bit of talk about bloody events! If you are lucky, you may be invited into the main ring to try your hand with some real battle weapons, so if you do have a Knight, King, Queen or Princess outfit in your wardrobe you need to wearing it! However do not not worry if you have not as there will be children’s outfits and armoury to buy on site. Especially for children there will be an action packed mediaeval activity tent, where you can ‘make & take’, have a go at table top catapults and castle sieges, now that does sound exciting!

Tickets on the day are Adults £10, Children (5yrs-15years) £5, under 5 years free and Family tickets: £25 (2 adults & 2 fee paying children). Parking is free. There is an advance tickets 10% reduction direct from Sherborne Castle on 01935 813182 and TIC offices in Sherborne and Dorchester.

Corscombe Fest The Corscombe Fest on Saturday 17th June from 1.00pm-5.00pm is a superb family day out. The Fest is a lovely traditional event, with something for everyone, including great stalls with local Dorset food. day and watch the Yeovil Ukulele group, 'No Mean Feet Appalachian Dancers' and 'The Enigma Morris Dancers' perform. The dogs show is always a good place to start the day. Have a Pimms on the lawn, a pint of real ale, a hog roast or a tea and a cake or visit the local food stalls and buy some local produce. Corscombe is a beautiful unspoilt West Dorset village, just 4 miles from Beaminster, 9 Miles from Yeovil, and 7 miles from Crewkerne. Tickets are available on the gate at only £2 each so bring the family, there is amply free parking. Remember that the event continues in the evening as well with 'The Devil’s Chair Rock' concert, with tickets on sale separately now from the website www.corscombe-fest.org

You can register online at https://www.fullonsport.com/e vent/sherborne-sprint-triathlon2017/profile or by visiting our website www.sherbornesports.co.uk/tria thlon2017 If you think you can comfortably tackle a 500M swim, 20K bike ride and 5K run, then this event is for you. Last year’s mens event was won in a time of 1 hour 07 minutes 11 seconds. The ladies time was 1 hour 18 minutes 13 seconds. The slowest time was just under 3 hours, so as you can see it really does not matter how fast you do it……..as long as you do it, and give it a go!

thousands of Cars The number of vehicles damaged by potholes has increased massively by almost two thirds in a year, raising concerns about the state of local roads as well as cash strapped councils failing to maintain them. Figure from the RAC show that patrols attending 63% more were pot-hole related breakdowns in the first three months of 2017 compared with the same period last year despite mild winter weather. The data showed that more than 6,500 callouts were Welding - Diagnostics - Air Condition made between the Tyres - Brakes - Exhausts - Clutches last three months citing poor road surface as a cause. Incidents included broken suspension springs, damaged shock absorbers and distorted wheels - leaving Sherborne Road, Milborne Port, motorists with bills Nr Sherborne, DT9 5AU running into hundreds of www.crackmoregarage.com pounds. The report by the Asphalt Industry Alliance also warned that such roads had less than five years of working life left, meaning that they would need to be resurfaced or closed to traffic by 2021. If you know of any such roads tell the councils now so they can get them fixed.
