editor’s note

Hello! This is my first time writing the editor’s note while looking back on how far the journey of English Department’s Journalism Club has been. Since we revived the club last December, I can see more on the students’ passions in writing. In September, as we welcomed the new semester, the Journalism Club also welcomed 5 new members; so I am delighted to say that we are expanding indeed. The Journalism Club is back with the newest volume of Glides after the long midyear break. The 14th Volume will cover issues spanning from cultural to health awareness. Not only did we expand the club, but we also expanded the topics and got a better distribution of copies as the club continues to grow. If you are looking for opportunities in working with us, we are opening recruitment in December for February intake – stay tune. That’s all for now; happy reading! - Criscentia Jessica Setiadi, S.S., M.A.

OK TO BER FEST

The Oktoberfest is a festival in Germany. Started in Munich as a celebration of the wedding of Prince Ludwig (later known as King Ludwig) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, the 16-18 day festival begins in late September until the first Sunday of October. It is usually held at the Theresienwiese, an open space in Munich borough of Ludwigvorstadt-Isarvorstadt that serves as the official ground of the festival. Having been held since the year 1810, it is one of the important parts of Bavarian culture. The festival is probably most famous for its “drinking beer” tradition. More than 7 million liters of beer is served in this festival every year. Not every kind of beer can cut it, though. Only the ones brewed in Munich can be served. Of course, there’s much more beyond the booze in the festival. You can also enjoy musical performances, buy some food, and also have fun at

by Zubenubiana Bisri the amusement rides. Oh, we almost forgot to mention “Dirndl” and “Lederhosen”, two traditional Bavarian dresses that the festival is also famous for. The former is for women and the latter is for men. People wear these two dresses every time they celebrate the festival. The “Dirndl” consists of four parts: a bodice, a low-cut blouse with short puff sleeves, full skirt, and apron. Meanwhile, the “Lederhosen” is a breech made from leather that is shaped like the letter “H” and usually worn with a white short-sleeved shirt or a checkered red and white shirt. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? If you have a chance to visit Munich around late September to early October, be sure to get a pint (or more), and have fun there. What if you don’t? No need to worry. The festival is also celebrated at many local German bars around the world. Just fine one near you to experience it without having to go all the way to Munich. That’s it. Have a happy Oktoberfest, everyone!

89 years after it was first conceived, Sumpah Pemuda’s anniversary in 2017 falls during the time of a divided Indonesia. Does Sumpah Pemuda still hold any significance in Indonesian society, or have the original values of patriotism been clouded over by bigotry and extremism?

LOGAN LUCKY

Rotten Tomatoes: 93% IMDb: 7.3/10

Ah, Daniel Craig. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear his name?I bet most of you will say “James Bond.” But have you ever imagined Mr. Craig doing something that is a little bit more comical? Steven Soderbergh’s new back-from-retirement comedy heist film, Logan Lucky, will deliver you exactly that. Also starring Adam Driver and Channing Tatum, and packaged with that country-esque atmosphere of West Virginia and of course, with all those funny robbery scenes that Soderbergh has been famous for in Ocean’s trilogy, the film centers around Jimmy Logan and his family wanting to steal millions of dollars at Charlotte Motor Speedway. And what exactly is Daniel Craig’s character? A felon slash demolition expert called “Joe Bang”, who helps the Logans to execute their plan.

Even the name of his character sounds amusing, right? It’s coming soon to the cinemas near you. Oh, did you notice the pun? I hope you did.

BABY DRIVER

Rotten Tomatoes: 93% IMDb: 7.9/10

Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver is probably the most unique film we’ve ever seen. Seriously. We definitely love it. Starring many high-profile stars, including Ansel Elgort and Kevin Space, it follows a story of a bunch of robbers being chased by the police in lots of high-speed pursuits with a musical twist from an iPod. What? That’s right. The main character, “Baby” (Elgort), is a very skilled driver working for the robbers, who always listens to his iPod to drown the ringing noise in his hears caused by tinnitus. So, throughout the film, you’ll not only see him trying to outpace the police cars, but also listening to all the songs on his iPod as if you’re actually watching a musical film. Robbery and musical combined! Crazy, huh? A bit of warning, though. It’s a bit lacking plot-wise. So, if you’re chasing after deep stories or some complex character developments, it is simply not for you. But if you’re chasing after the uniqueness, or if you’re really into music (or iPod!), go open your favourite streaming site and click play immediately! You’re not gonna regret it. Seriously.
