96% Rotten Tomatoes 67% Korea’s big 2016 zombie When you think about 7.6/10 IMDB 7.2/10 Daniel Radcliffe, the first thing film, Train to Busan, follows a that will definitely not come to couple of passengers struggling your mind is his role as a talking to survive on the train from Seoul to corpse that can spit fire, chop tree, and Busan while a zombie-virus breaks out fart like a jet engine. Directors, Daniel Kwan in South Korea. It has received a lot of hype and Daniel Scheinert (also known together as since its release . Not to mention the added “The Daniels”), have managed to create the most zombie flicks fans, such as ourselves, lining up alongside of them. surreal movie this year. Now, having already watched a number of Hollywood zombie films and TV series in the past, we came into this movie with low expectations and a yawn escaping our throats. But, surprisingly enough, we walked out wiping away the remaining tears in our eyes and hearts swelled with sadness and respect. It was, an, all around, an exciting survival film, where characters were put in this massive situation, trying to save themselves from an outbreak of the living dead. There are characters that are hated, and characters simply put there for the laughs. A teen romance was evolved and a pregnant woman ran for her life. But the crowd winner has got to be the between a father and his daughter and his sacrifice to keep his daughter alive. Ultimately, that was what won us over. The characters in this movie made Train to Busan a completely fresh and breath-taking story, and for that,we give mad props to the Korean film industry.

Swiss Army Man tells the story of Hank (Paul Dano) who was stranded on a deserted island and has finally given up on surviving, until Manny (Daniel Radcliffe), a corpse, washed ashore. Together they try to find a way back home through a series of more surreal and epic adventures. We first came across this movie when we spotted its trailer on Youtube. We got ensnared by its indie, surreal, and humorous vibe. When we watched it in the cinema, we were expecting to get one hell of a surreal ride, and The Daniels surely managed to do just that. The relationship between Hank and Manny was fascinating, giving you a taste of a friendship you probably have never seen before. Along with the atmospheric soundtrack that drags you along even more on a surreal and emotional roller coaster, Swiss Army Man delivers an equilibrium of absurd humor and heartfelt friendship. It takes a good movie magic to make a man dragging around and talking to a corpse so interesting to watch.

Volume 10
With 9 complete volumes, 2 and a half years of movement, and 3 previous reigning presidents, students and lecturers alike questioned the disappearance of Journalism Club. What happened? Where did they go?
03
Volume 10
Let’s travel back in time to the year of 2013, when a young student by the name of Junita Yang approached the boards of the English Department and presented the idea of starting a Journalism Club. With the prospects of discovering hidden potentials and building a team of future journalists and bestselling authors, the English department took on the idea with reverence and pride. The first year of Journalism Club housed a number of excited and passionate students. These students, differing only in age, had one goal; To provide interested readers with the latest news about college life in BINUS University. As as the months went on, they succeeded to do just that. With lecturers on their side, cheering them on as they went, the passion instilled in these students grew and grew, and thus, Glides was born. In June 2013, a team of young writers, willing to learn and thrilled to report, gathered together and created the first ever volume
of GLIDES, a mini magazine, focusing on different aspects of social life and academic features. This club had little-to-no budget to begin with, but as the word spread about GLIDES, more and more interested readers were willing to donate generously, and eventually Glides climbed its way to the top of the list of the department’s budget plan for the next year and the year after that. GLIDES not only showcased these future writers to the whole of the English Department, but other students were able to partake and be given the spotlight too. GLIDES quickly became the platform for the English department students and lecturers to get their own words out to the public. So with all this success and spirit, why did GLIDES just fall off the face of the earth? Here’s something for everyone reading this to think about. If something new and clean and untouchable falls at your feet, wouldn’t you, too, be enthusiastic to start using it? With no benefits attached, with nothing to hold you back, wouldn’t you also want to take it in as your own? But with no real love or commitment, if passion isn’t the thing to make you care or stay, then isn’t it that much easier to leave it behind once something newer comes along? And that’s exactly what happened with the Journalism Club. These students started with burning fire inside of their souls, wanting to create and write and to be seen. But as the time moved on, life had gotten in the way. The only thing that will keep someone put, despite the heavy surges of life and ridiculous amount of
schoolwork to be turned in, is the love they have for the thing itself. Perhaps they once loved and cared about Journalism Club as much as I do now, but with everything else standing firm in front of their paths, their motivation to keep contributing got a bit thinner. As one fell away, the others followed, and the lack of support from the department, itself, made it that much easier for Journalism Club and, ultimately, GLIDES to disappear into nothing.

But here I am, world!
I’m in my 3rd year of university, and heading into my 3rd semester in the Creative Writing streaming. I’m active in 2 different student organizations, and a Patricia Amadea president of one of the other club by in the English Department, but something was nagging at me about the lack of writing support in this department. A department that strives on language has provided no platform for the written language itself? How ridiculous! This thought pestered me day and night, and I tried to cast it away with petty excuses: I’m already way too active for my own good! If I take this on, everything, including my grades, will surely fall apart. This isn’t worth my time or effort! Yet, I felt myself getting closer and closer to contacting one of the lecturers who once oversaw the previous Journalism Club, and the next thing I knew, I was recruiting a team of 7 people! The more and more progress I made, the more ecstatic I became for the prospects ahead. I know what you all must be
thinking. This is the new and shiny thing that falls at your feet, right? This is the moment when you get thrilled to play with your new toy but when the new semester rolls around, you’ll get bored, or busy, or whatever else excuses you can think of, right? Well, no. I’m the kind of person that strives on other people’s infectious passion. It’s why I took a full two weeks to recruit my team, to choose from the very passionate to the very talented. I’m excited, to not only bring this new and improved edition of GLIDES to you all, but I’m also excited to train and recruit future leaders and reporters who are just as passionate and excited as I am about writing. I want the future GLIDES to excel, but not in perfectionism. I want GLIDES to continue through the people involved within. Journalism Club, from this point forward, is not only a platform for passionate future writers to reveal their potentials, but also for students of any kinds to be surrounded by other students who are supportive of mistakes and willing to learn. I’m proud of the team I have now. I’m proud of the team that existed before. And with all of our generations combined, we introduce you GLIDES 2.0, a new and improved version of what was familiar before. Except, better! Happy reading, folks!

DONALD JOHN TRUMP
Current Events
Road to the
White House
by Fernanda Azaria
In 2016, the 45th President of the United States of America is going to be decided. Two major party, two third party , and two independent candidates are on a heated race to obtain the President’s seat in the oval office.
MEET THE NOMINEES For over a year, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton had been campaigning to fight for the rights of women, minorities, and working class people, which ultimately won her the nomination, beating her former rival, Bernie Sanders. Being the former first lady during her husband’s presidential term in the 1990s, Clinton has the advantage of name recognition in the campaign trail. However, Clinton’s campaign was not without flaws. Since she declared her candidacy in April 2015, some scandals have sparked around her involvement in the Benghazi attacks, and millennial voters have accused her of pandering to win over young people. Despite all the firestorm surrounding her campaign, Clinton simultaneously dealt with the scandals and declared that she is willing to comply with whatever consequences brought upon her to better herself.

Volume 10
On the other hand, there is the formidable Republican nominee, Donald J. Trump. Trump has sparked countless controversies and keeping his name relevant in the public eye since the day he
HILLARY DIANE RODHAM CLINTON
announced his candidacy back in June 2015. In his campaign, he promised to strengthen American borders to keep out illegal immigrants from entering the country, and boasted that he will take serious precautions to prevent Muslim extremists from entering the United States. His ability to capture the attention of Republican voters ultimately resulted in his nomination for the right-wing party. Despite his extreme and unorthodox policies, Trump has gained a momentum by earning himself a tremendous amount of fiercely loyal supporters. Some people feel like he is an honest man who isn’t afraid to express his thoughts without restraint, and therefore will be more fit to sit in the Oval Office instead of Clinton, whom these people thought as dishonest and crooked.
he needed to propel himself into the presidency. And so, although Clinton earned about 200,000 more in the popular vote compared to her rival, Trump managed to win the 2016 election by earning more electoral college votes ( 29044) than Clinton (23215). At least 270 electoral votes are needed to score the presidency out of the 538 available votes. Countless of minorities fear for their lives as Trump and his appointed vice president, Mike Pence, are poised to take the Oval Office. Women, Muslims, Jews, Latinos, African-Americans, and the LGBT community are afraid that hate crime levels might rise against them. They are concerned about the policies that Trump and/or Pence will put into effect in the future and how it might affect their quality of life.
TRIUMPHANT TRUMP On November 8th, 2016, Democrats and Republicans alike marched over to their local polls to vote for the next leader of their country. A few hours in after the polls opened, Clinton was ahead of Trump in blue (liberal) states. However, both candidates were neck and neck in crucial states such as Texas and Florida which has a huge number of electoral votes and therefore more at stake. Unfortunately for Clinton, both Texas and Florida have always been a typically red (conservative) state and the odds were not in her favor despite generating a large number of votes in more liberal states.
There is no denying that Donald Trump is going to be the 45th President of the United States. He will be officially inaugurated into office in January 20, 2017.
Florida in particular was flipflopping between red and blue for an hour and a half before finally settling on red, and gave Trump the momentum
THE INTERVIEW by Yael Engineta
The U.S. presidential race has drawn attention and controversy in the United States and the world as it’s being closely watched across the globe. What do our peers right here in good old Kijang Campus have to say and think about the newly elected president of the United States.
“In my opinion, Trump is not like what he seems and we should just see his next policies instead of judging his previous statements. I would like to see further policies if what Trump states is true rather than giving a score just from media, news, or hot tweets from celebrities who are in terror under Trump statements.” Cemi, 2018 “I think he is the most controversial president of America ever looking at his policies. Honestly, I don’t like Trump to be the president. The first reason is because he doesn’t have any political background at all. Then, some and nearly half (if I’m not mistaken) Americans don’t like him too. His policies in banning Muslims citizens and delete Obama care can be the reason why he is hated.” Septyan, 2018 “Both Trump and Hillary suck. I prefer a third party other than those two, but hey, America has spoken.” Jason, 2019 “It was bizarre and lots of pros and cons. It’s surprised me that many people voted for him, but I guess people voted for him because some of his plans make sense. So far America is just fine.” Kinanti, 2018

Literature It was one very lazy and filled with procrastinating day that I came across a video of a girl doing a TED talk about “If I should have a daughter”. It may be the way she talks or it may be the way these words flow in the most delicate and authentic way coming out of her mouth. A speech unlike anything I’ve heard before. Allegories and metaphors delivered in the most delicious performance inspired by both fantasy and reality. A confession, wrapped up in a rhythm of sounds as soft as the wind yet as striking as a warrior’s sword. At least that’s what I would describe as my first ever introduction to spoken word poetry.
“Love disappeared slowly, like baby teeth, losing parts of me I thought I needed. Love vanished like an amateur magician, everyone could see the trap door but me.” A part of Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye’s When Love Arrives
The theme itself is very influenced by modern poetry, post-modern performance, and monologue theatre, by combining other aspects such as music once in awhile. Spoken word poetry is mostly related to current issues or topics that can be relatable to audiences of all ages, genders, even social backgrounds. It varies from politics and social injustice, to personal struggles and emotional confessions.

In first glance, people, like me, might mistake these spoken poetry as a regular speech. But the way that it is being delivered, or the way by Michelle Aditya these words have been combined and compiled into a single performance definitely sets the difference it as one of the branches in the ancient Olympics. The trend, between them. then, developed to the United Spoken word poetry, just like States where it also influenced its name, is a term that is used the notorious speeches such to describe a type of poetry, as Martin Luther King’s “I Have read and performed in front of a Dream,” Sojourner Truth’s an audience. Long before there “Ain’t I a Woman?” and Booker were printing media, poetry T. Washington’s “Cast Down Your used to be delivered as an oral Buckets” back in the civil right show. monologue with a poetic lines. Therefore, it is very important to make sure that the artist is able to put a powerful delivery in order to portray every word, every line, every rhythm with gestures, facial expressions, and most importantly, an attitude.
Artists and poets consider that doing spoken word poetry is not just healing them, but it also gives direct impact to their audiences. By performing, every message is sent loud and clear. It also re-triggers the long-lost interest of this type of literature. To taste the bitterness and sweetness of the performances, check out the Youtube channel of ButtonPoetry and Speakeasynyc and be inspired. AMERICAN HOLIDAY This is the new feature of Glides magazine featuring me, the editor, trying to dissect many interesting stuff in the English Department in a secret way. To kick off this new section, I went undercover to get to know some stuff that Americans do in the holiday season. My target: Mr. Bruno Sablan, one of the coolest lecturers in Binus. Not only did I get information about what the Americans usually get up to, I also got a chance to know what he, himself, usually does in the holiday season. In a dimly lit, small, and very quiet room which is designated as his headquarters, I began my operation by asking him a basic question about what the holiday season means to him. I expected him to come up with something as complex as his job description, or maybe something as cool as he is. Boy, did I get a bit disappointed. He only told me that the holidays basically mean the days when he can relax if it’s short, and the days when he can travel if it’s long. That’s it. Cool, then. He likes travelling, right?
Not really. He then told me that it’s mostly about the relaxing part. Well, you get the idea. We then talked about the Americans. By the way, so sorry about Trump getting elected. From what he told me, American people usually gather with their extended family on Thanksgiving, with immediate family on Christmas, and with friends on New Year. An interesting pattern happens there. That means not every single type of holiday is spent together with every single all family members, unlike what people usually think. Although, he pointed out that it is just what usually happens, and it still depends on the people and situation. We moved on to discuss about which place is the best to spend the holidays in the US. He told me that New York is quite beautiful, but like most of the part of the US, the city is really cold at this time of the year. Only the west coast area stays warm but not by much. He then told me that Hawaii is probably the best placeto spend the holiday season. However, most of the people tend to just stay at where they are, except
for Thanksgiving, in the holiday season because not all of them can afford such thing like going to Hawaii. Most of them are also too busy preparing for Christmas and New Year. To the last part of my undercover mission. I wrapped my mission up with a simple question: Snow or no snow? He told me that he really likes rain and snow, despite his previous remarks about how cold most of the US is in the holiday season and his recommendation to go to Hawaii instead. When I asked him how it feels to touch a snow, he simply said “I tell you what, it’s cold.” Well, I know it is cold, Sir. Oh, maybe I can tell you one cool thing about him here. He once got a DENON stereo set from his mom on Christmas. If you know what DENON is, you’ll know why it is cool. Mission complete. Off to the next one I go.
