Two signs in the traditional Zodiac calendar fall in April, both of which are domestic animals, quadrupeds with cloven hoofs. People born in the first part of the month between March 21st and April 19th are said to be born under the sign of Aries the Ram, a Sun sign which is ruled by the planet and the Roman god of war, Mars. The Dark Side of Harajuku’s Style:

Yami Kawaii 病み

by Stefanny

It is well-known that ‘suicide’ topic in Japan is very taboo. Perhaps it’s in part of a backlash against the death obsession of premodern Bushido, the “way of the warrior”. So, what happens when people finally speak up and fashion becomes their weapon? Tokyo's Harajuku street might be most well-known for cartoon characters, sparkles, & rainbows — the hallmark of its “kawaii,”or cute, aesthetic — but recently, a darker subculture has emerged, a new look that challenges Japan’s deepest taboos; depression and mental illness. The style is called “Yami Kawaii” and it means “sick cute”. On the surface it’s your average cute, girly style with some twisted humour. But deep down it’s a heavy beast with disturbing imagery of syringes and bandages that live alongside baby pink lace and anime characters. The pioneer of the look is an artist named Bisuko with the character that he illustrates named Menhera-chan, the heroine of the Yami Kawaii comic that he created. The name itself, “Menhera”, is a term that refers to people who suffer from mental illness. Bisuko believes that when talking is not an option, perhaps fashion could be the answer. He wants to change the negative image of mental health issues in Japan and perhaps all around the world. He wants people to use this fashion as an outlet to express their feelings and as a way of therapy.

Every year, April 22 is marked as the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement which began in 1970, the day that we know as “Earth Day”.

Proposed by Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, he wanted Earth Day as a way to finally put environmental issues to the forefront of national political agenda in the U.S. Now, it is a global event involving more than 1 billion people taking part in one of the largest day of action in the world. Mobilizing the world to end plastic pollution will be the main focus for Earth Day this year. Through this action, millions of people will broaden their knowledge about health and other risks associated with the use and disposal of plastics, including pollution of our oceans, water and wildlife. The “End Plastic Pollution” campaign consists of four major components such as: Educating citizens across the globe to demand that governments and corporations control and clean up plastic solution; educating people worldwide to take personal responsibility

for plastic solution by choosing to reject, reduce, reuse, and recycle plastics; work with universities, school teachers, and students to end plastic pollution; work with other organizations and networks to make Earth Day 2018 as a platform to end plastic pollution by developing resources that others can use and build partnerships on. So, don’t forget to support Earth Day this year by using less plastic materials and start recycling the ones that you have, guys! No matter how small our action is, the future of this earth depends on all of us. And of course, Happy Earth Day 2018!

STOP

PERFECTION:

STRIVING FOR

LET GO AND LET IT BE

by I Gde Swastika Arya & Sherenna Aurafani Rumaiza

In this Stress Awareness Month, Arya and Sheren try to take a look at one of the most common sources of stress: Perfection.

Perfection. A simple yet complicated word. A word that screams the impossible, that pushes you beyond the limit, that leaves you wanting even more, that demands too much out of you, that punishes you for every mistake you make, that kills you slowly in this never ending imperfect life. Wait a minute. Does that sound a bit too much? Punishing you? Killing you slowly? Well, maybe because it actually does all those things to you. Despite being like that, we all really love perfection, don’t we? After all, who doesn’t want this lovely life to be perfect, right? We always chase after it, strive for it, and even insist on it. I don’t know. It could be in your relationship, in your career, in your study, or even in a not-so-important matter like arranging your bookshelf. In my case, I was even trying to do it while typing this article with Sheren.

Especially in this modern era where all the

itself!

And boy did it all go wrong from here. Again, like I have mentioned before, this is a never ending imperfect life, in which you’re looking for the exact opposite to it: Perfection itself. It’s not gonna work, my friend. It’ll only bring you one thing: Stress. And of course, as you know, stress does kill you, like perfection. Stressful, isn’t it? We simply are not superhuman. We have many limitations. We have weaknesses. Sometimes, or maybe most of the times, we completely forget what’s important in this life. We prioritize things that are really not important

Yes, my friend. Start to live your life! Life is more than just about climbing the endless career ladder at work, or beating that straight-A you despise at campus, or finding the right someone out of your long list of requirements. It is about living in the simplest way possible. It is about accepting all the imperfections around us. It is about not being afraid to make mistakes. It is about devoting your time to people around you and yourself instead. It is about taking some times off from your daily dose of pressure. Well, that’s why, my friend. Stop striving for perfection. Let go. Let it be.

Humans on a New Planet?

Puspita Ayu Alifah

If you haven’t heard already, the late theoretical physicist, Stephen Hawking, argued that our planet was getting increasingly dangerous because of climate change and overpopulation growth that humans needed to colonize a new planet soon in order to stay alive. Regarding this assertion, we asked some of our friends (and a lecturer) about their opinions.

Should we move to a new planet or not?

Book Review by Sherenna Aurafani Rumaiza

I first discovered Mark Manson on his blog where he started writing about finding the meaning of life, and quite some time ago I found out that he wrote a book titled The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck that came up as a New York Times Bestseller. And as what he always wants to aim to his reader about living a “good life”, the subtitle of this book

THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A F*CK

proclaims ‘a counterintuitive approach to living a good life.’

Mark Manson

Although the title sounds a little bit offen-

With an extra filled with Manson real-life stories in between all those “counterintuitive approaches”, we definitely recommend this book.
