EDITOR'S NOTE Welcome to the 23rd issue of GLIDES!

Kya Maldini Hill Editor in Chief

In this issue, our main theme is time. What does time mean to you? Does it have any significance? Our members have written their interpretation of time. Presenting you with their hopes and wishes for the future, nostalgia, cultural spotlight and films. In addition to that, there is also an exclusive interview with our Head of Department, Mr Irfan Rifai! Time has been quite the theme for all of us here. The events that emerged in 2020 made us quite reflective. We started to think about the meaning of time and what we associate the word with. The results are in this issue. Each piece represents what comes to mind and what relates to our writers. The 23rd release is the debut issue of Ollyv from Binusian 2023. She is the newest addition of our design team. Do not forget that our club is open for positions of designers and writers. Just submit your application and portfolio to tinyurl.com/oprecjourno20. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we do. Stay safe! Kya

TRENDS WE'VE GONE THROUGH by Ahmad Fikri Adzhani

T

ime does change but the memory remains. A person or a thing can recall something from the past that may bring nostalgia to your life. That's how I feel every time I see memorable things that throw me off at once. As long as I live, I have participated in trends that come and go over the years. I think it's not just me, you might have experienced it too. Here are some trends that you and I were fond of and sometimes don't always end well. You will know what I mean later.

" Time does change but the memory remains." When I was in elementary school, the existence of the Power Balance bracelets immediately caused an uproar in the chattering world of rancid boys. Rumor has it that this bracelet will enhance strength and balance for those who use it. Even though at that time we were not sure of what strength and balance are. It just sounded so cool to us. Sure enough, this bracelet was bought and sold freely from about 10 toy sellers whose carts were more or less the same. At that time, as kids, we still believed whatever older people said. We blindly bought everything they said about this trendy bracelet, including me. Yes, I spent almost fifty thousand rupiahs even though my pocket money was five thousand rupiahs per day. At the end of the day, this bracelet was simply a business that markets its products through big sports stars such as David Beckham and Shaquille O'Neal to attract worldwide interest. In 2011, several claims were received by Power Balance regarding its disproved scientific benefits. They declared bankruptcy after experiencing considerable losses in each of their last years.

#2 The next trend that I believe everyone has experienced is sharing moments, including your location, with 150 close friends via Path. Path was so loved because it was personal and more exclusive compared to Facebook and Twitter. In the past, when I was 14 years old, I was very addicted to Path because there, I could share moments only with my closest friends. On Path, I used to share what songs I listened to and where I was. I just shared cool songs. Otherwise, I wouldn’t.

I also liked to share my locations. Of course, I only shared my location when I was in fancy places like cafes, five-star hotels, tourist attractions, and pretended I was overseas even though I've never been abroad. From my experience, I left Path because Instagram was developing cool features while Path was stagnant as if they didn’t want to get out of their comfort zone. Path officially closed all its services after being left by its users in 2018.

Between 2014 to 2016, the pomade trended along with hairstyles such as undercuts and pompadours. This resulted in the proliferation of barbershops, specifically in Jakarta. This booming trend made all men, especially the young ones, curious and wanted to try pomade which was actually not new. In the past, there was Tancho which allowed all the daddies to make their hair look wet and easy to comb. At the time, having slicked back hairstyles and pomade brands like Suavecito, Nu Nile, and Murray's at a fraction price was a sign that a guy is truly a gentleman. Yes, I haven’t got an ID yet but I have tried this vintagelooking hairstyle which turned out to be a disaster. It did not fit my face even though I imagined myself getting the spotlight if I got the cut. Well, I wasn't wrong. I was a spotlight for my hard-on-theeyes haircut. This trend continues to exist until now even though it is more general than before.

The flight jacket is the forerunner of the bomber jacket that began to be worn by World War II fighter pilots. The bomber jacket penetrated into Indonesia’s fashion trend around 2016. The trend was spreading like a virus when this jacket was worn by the Indonesian President Joko Widodo at his press conference on 4th November 2016. At the time, wherever you walk, there will always be someone wearing a bomber jacket. Every brand produced the jacket and it could easily be bought. It is undeniable that the jacket was fashionable and was one of the must-have fashion items. Telling my story, I also have a bomber jacket that I bought around 2016/2017 and it is still in my closet. Now, the bomber jacket has already earned its place as a fashion item that comes from a military background. Those are a few trends that I have taken a part in. I don’t regret myself having been into them, because I learned that I don’t have to always follow a trend, especially if it doesn’t fit me in any way. I also learned that I would not get accepted by society completely and it's totally okay. So, I would suggest doing less on trying all the trends for the sake of being trendy.

So, what do you think? Did you guys also go through these trends? I hope you can learn a thing or two from it as I did!
