MANUAL OF FLOOR MOVEMENTS

The M W Grand Lodge of A.F. & A.M. of Kansas Revised 2019

HISTORICAL

PREFACE

In l893, by Order of the Grand Master, Brother William M. Shaver prepared a series of Charts in notebook form showing the floor movements of our craft then in use in Kansas. In l898, then Grand Master Shaver amplified the Charts to show the floor movements in the Dramatized Version of the Second Section of the Third Degree. Although these “SHAVER CHARTS were immediately accepted as the authority, it was not until the Constitutional revision of l944 that the Grand Lodge officially adopted them. The Charts became so badly worn by l954 that Grand Master Floyd Ecord authorized a copy to be made. However, the copy was soon badly worn and this led to the printed book, which was published in l967. Several changes were then made. The numbers assigned to the Senior Steward, Junior Steward and Tyler were changed to correspond with those assigned in the Cipher and the newly created office of Chaplain was included. Although the Charts were not exact copies, the Lodge Hall -- still proportionately the same size -- was drawn to a larger scale. Seats were added for the Brethren in the north and south and the steps leading to the platforms were altered to make them closer to those actually in use. The Dramatized Version is not included in this book, but is available as a separate document. THE SHAVER CHARTS ARE STILL THE AUTHORIZED FLOOR PLANS --- THE PLANS IN THIS BOOK ARE MERELY CORRECTED COPIES THEREOF.

NOTES ON DESCRIPTIVE DIAGRAM IDEAL ARRANGEMENT OF LODGE HALL CHART on following page is Lodge Hall of same proportions as the one shown in the Authorized Floor Plans. It shows a Hall 34x52 feet in size, however, by using descriptions below, the correct location of the several stations, places, etc., can be established for any Lodge Hall, regardless of its size. Correct location of S D, J D and J S is of utmost importance as their places are reference points for many of the Floor Movements. ALTAR: Midway between north and south rows of seats, and halfway between bottom steps of W M’s and S W’s platforms. W M (1): Due east of center of Altar. S W (2): Due west of center of Altar. J W (3): Due south of center of Altar. J S (9): West of J W far enough so J S can walk due north from place and pass immediately behind someone standing at Altar. S S (8): Same distance east of J W as J S is west of J W. J D (7): At west end of line running about halfway between Altar and J W’s platform. Tyler’s Room Door on south, S W’s platform on north. N E Corner (X): At north end of line located immediately west of W M’s steps, at a point three feet north of three burning tapers OR about halfway between Altar and north row of seats - WHICHEVER DISTANCE IS GREATER. (If Lodge Hall is wide enough, W M’s platform should be so constructed that a diagonal line along corners of the three steps will point to N E Corner.) S D (6): Chair is immediately north of N E Corner, so that when S D is called to his feet, he is standing in N E Corner, facing south. Chaplain (Ch): On sideline as indicated, across from S D, facing north. Secretary (5), Treasurer (4), Tyler (10): Located as indicated on Chart. Preparation Room Door: North of S W’s platform, yet far enough south so Candidate can enter, be received, and be conducted DUE east without running into Members seated on north side of Hall. Door should be wide enough so Candidate and Stewards can come in three-abreast.

The Descriptive Diagram, together with Supplemental Notes (which appear on the opposite page hereof) was prepared by the Committee on Ritualistic Work; and, with the advice, concurrence and approval of the Council of Administration, on July 26, 1963, Grand Master, M W Ben W. Graybill, ordered that the same be filed in the Archives as a Supplement to, and a part of, the Authorized Floor Plans for this Grand Jurisdiction. Pursuant thereto, it was duly filed in the Archives on September 5, 1963. Thereafter, on recommendation of the Committee on Ritualistic Work, said action was duly approved by the Grand Lodge, on March 11,1964.

SOUTH

The Deacons and Stewards should carry their rods whenever they are called to their feet to perform a duty, or any other movements that require them to have their rods. No rods are used in Balloting, or in the Second Section of the Third Degree, except by 8 and 9 when bringing Candidate into Lodge Hall. Rods are carried on the right side, at a "carry arms", on the shoulder and near perpendicular, the bottom of the rod being 4 to 6 inches from the floor. When the right hand is being used for other purposes, carry the rod in the same manner on the left side. With all right abouts, the military “about face is not expected or to be done.

8

The position indicated on Diagram is recommended as, in most Lodges, less interfering with the movements of O ff icers. T h e tap ers s ho u ld b e in position, and burning, whenever the Lodge is open.

Lines Used in Work

Work Lines EAST

Diagonal and circular movements are used in certain parts of the Second Sections of the Second an d Third Degrees. IN ALL OTHER CASES, the Floor Movements by the Candidates or by an Officer when not conducting the Candidate are always along straight lines running due north, east, south or west, with square turns at corners and NO curves or circles; and no diagonals except when the Senior Deacon returns to his seat after seating Candidate for Lecture. To assist in understanding these instructions, it is believed that the lines most commonly used should be identified by distinctive names and approximate locations, as follows:
