INTROUDUCING YOU TO UNIT 2 GLNE JAMBOREE UNIT ‘THE DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY’ So it all seems so long ago when we set about the County on our Road Shows to tell you all about the Jamboree… and here we are with the GLNE Jamboree Unit for 2015. BUT with such a great Group who attended the selection weekend back in October, as a County we also bid for one extra Patrol in a new London-wide unit. We now have an extra 9 young people who will get to experience the Jamboree – ‘Well Done’ to everyone who has been selected!

So far Unit 2 have all been together on two occasions, we had an afternoon in November to help us get to know each other, followed by a question & answer session with the Parents. Then, over the first weekend in March we held our first gathering weekend. All unit participants were sent a boarding pass and arrived to a check in desk, and airport style security. One of our units managed to pack 20.5kg of luggage for one weekend!!! We’re looking forward to seeing how they manage to pack for three weeks. The unit were then welcomed aboard Greater London North East Airlines flight 001 (from Thriftwood to Thriftwood via Brentwood at an altitude of 85m) and taken through their inflight briefing (and possibly scarred for life) by flight attendant Karl.
@GLNEScouts
We spent the weekends working in our Patrols, and can already see the unit coming together. But definitely one of the highlights has to be our visit from the Japanese Education Society, not only did they teach us all some Japanese maths (ask any of the unit about multiplying numbers greater than 5!), they also taught us about daily life in Japan, how to say Hello!, how to count to 10 and also the Scout necessity – Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Japanese!!! We’re sure this will come in very useful next year. On top of the 45 young people and 5 unit leaders, GLNE also have 11 members of IST who have all been invited to join any events Unit 2 are running, we did throw them in the deep end slightly at the first gathering weekend by asking them to run activities at short notice, but they did a great job – THANK YOU!!! There will be various fundraising events taking place over the coming months so look out for quizzes, race nights, Easter egg hunts, paracord bracelets / woggles / key-rings please support where you can. We will shortly have unit badges to sell so keep an eye open. One way everyone is able to support us is installing http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/ invite/4HD2WA/ - ‘GLNE Jamboree Unit 2015’ onto your computer / laptop. This could mean free money to the unit as websites will donate on your behalf when you spend money with them (up to 5% of the amount you spend). Please do get in touch with us wsj2015-leaders@glne-scouts.org.uk if you have any questions or would like any more information on anything Jamboree related. A few bits from the unit members, firstly describing the Jamboree in 3 words: “Meeting New People” “One Big Family” “Crazy, Random, Insane” “One Amazing Opportunity”
“Everyone United Together” “Where’s the Campfire?” “Big Banter-full Camp” “Family, Fun, Epic”
“New Experience Discovered” “One Dysfunctional Family” “Only One Chance” “BEST UNIT EVER!”
And some quotes from our book of memories: “and a very crazy adventure this is set to be! I am scarred by Karl’s costume” “Captain’s Log - date 09.03.2014 (17 months to arrival) Eagerly anticipating arrival to Japan, cannot wait for the memories that will be made with the unit. Captain signing off” “Had a great weekend! sad it has to finish, it was great to meet everyone, can’t wait to get to know them all better. Bring on Japan!” “Yo, sick weekend so much to do but so dead (need more sleep). Came up with an idea so all of us from the Jamboree can get noticed by everyone with a funny YouTube vid with us all dancing. Hope we can do this in the future” “I really enjoyed the weekend, made lots of new friends, it’s nice to break away from our own Districts. The thing I liked the most was picking our own dinner then going out and buying it, can’t wait till the next weekend!” “Thank you for a great weekend! I loved getting to know everyone better. In the future I think we should do more things as a unit.” “This weekend has been great thank you so much. Looking forward to going to Japan a lot more now, many thanks to the big dysfunctional family!” You are invited to the Annual General Meeting of The Scout County of Greater London North East Wednesday 18th June 2014 in Sir Hawkey Hall, Broomfield Road, Woodford Green, IG8 0BG Light buffet 7pm onwards - AGM start at 8pm Speaker Bryony Balen - On her Expedition to the South Pole
COUNTY COMMISSIONER NEWS As the sun shines across the playing field opposite my house today, I think that hopefully we have seen the last of the dreary cold weather and spring is finally on its way. Therefore I thought this would be a good time to update everyone on the good things happening across the county. CONSULTATION TEAM The consultation team is now in place and is starting to get to grips with their different areas of speciality, I will update on a regular basis regarding the findings and actions as they occur. Adult and Young Leader training is going from strength to strength with a major review of how at County level we can improve and also offer additional training modules on the Multi Module days, plus how we can make the courses more proactive for the participants. We had over 80 Young Leaders who attended the Young Leader Training day and with the new revamped Adult Multi Module day we can see that training is already evolving in the County, details of the next courses are listed on the GLNE Website. TERI ADAMS Teri has decided to stand down as CTM for the County and concentrate on First Aid training and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Teri for all her hard work and contribution over the last two years. Teri took over the role of County Training Manager for Greater London North East in 2012. This is an intensive role as she was responsible for the provision of Adult Leader training, First Aid training, Safeguarding training, refresher courses, running the training budget and line managing 12 LTM’s. Teri has decided her strengths are without doubt in First Aid where she has run and arranged many successful courses and will continue to do so. Teri will also be continuing in her role as a Training Adviser, where I am sure many leaders will benefit from her experience. I understand she is now looking at a further role within her District which I will sure she will take on with great enthusiasm. We are thankful for all she has done and look forward to her further contribution to GLNE in the future. COUNTY REVIEWS I am at the moment conducting reviews with DC’s and their district teams ably assisted by Julie Leeper, the process is to fully understand what is the state of play within each District and as importantly what the Districts need in terms of support from the County, I am personally finding this very useful in understanding what makes our County tick and think this will be useful in moving each District forward in the future. WORLD SCOUT JAMBOREE 2015 The good news is we have bid and successfully gained another Patrol for the WSJ. The patrol will become part of Unit 73, a new Unit made up of Patrols from GLNE, GLSW, GLMW and GLS. We have identified additional people from the selection weekend who just missed out on being offered a place, these have now been offered a chance to be part of the new Patrol from GLNE. We are now looking for suggestions from the DC’s for individuals that couldn’t make the selection weekend who you think shoulduld have been considered, we still have several places to fill. Steuart Allen, part of the IST team, has been offered a place as part of the management team for Unit 73 and is looking forward to the challenge.

COUNTY MEDIA The County is working with Sam Longhurst to see how we can improve our digital media presence and we are looking at ways we can make sure news is presented via e mail, on our website and other media such as Facebook and Twitter. The key to this is getting as many good news stories out there to be celebrated, so make sure your group events, successes and celebrations are sent through to Ted Rose. Ted Rose e mail: Scoutingglne@gmail.com Here are the details of the different digital media so you can follow GLNE in a way that suits you: Our website address is http://www.glne-scouts.org.uk Find us on Facebook - Greater London North East Scouts Follow us on Twitter - @GLNEScouts CENSUS All the Census information has been completed and is now in. Each District will take time to digest the information, however the good news is that with all the development work we have seen done in the last year and that will continue in this year, it is going to be an exciting time for growth within the County. MEDIA “I am Noah - This is well worth a look, I think this is so positive and a great way to promote Scouts, it makes me inspired to be a Scout leader! http://tinyurl.com/iamnoah

ENDURANCE CAMP 2014 ROMFORD DISTRICT EXPLORER SCOUTS
This year’s theme for the Romford District Explorer Scouts Endurance Camp was Challenge the Bear. This was a Bear Grylls style bushcraft weekend.
This saw the Explorers over a glorious March weekend skinning and cooking Rabbits, collecting water from thin air, learning to shoot air rifles and hit the target along with archery and making their own sling shots from para cord (the leaders could have done with some body armour for the sling shot firing). The Explorers also slept out in military style shelters and had to cook for themselves on open fires, they also learnt to track. Both the Leaders and the Explorers had a great time and could not have asked for better weather. Thank you to all the Explorers and Leaders that attended and made this such a great success. The next adventures for the Explorer section are the County Camp and Conquering Mount Snowdon in June, before heading off to Switzerland in August... James Kirk Unit - A Explorer Scout Leader
