To. Sponsors that are always together with us Spring that comes every year is brilliant. Red, white, yellow petals cling to every thin branches seems like a dead body, and I hope this year will become fulling of green color of leaves. When spring comes, our body also cheers up and a dream for tomorrow stretches itself. However, spring has a scar. Over the years, this glittering spring have been blurred with many people’s tears and bloods. Therefore, every spring, there is a sigh and regret overflowing. So, this glorious and painful spring tells us to remember. It tells that 'Above all, life is precious.' and 'Preserve and enrich the life.' In February 1997, global care, which had started with the hope of ‘Hope to the World’, has been 20 years old now. On February 9, we held an audit concert with many sponsors. Young musicians, whose names are composer Han JaeSeong, cellist Park Bo-Gyeong, singer Hong Dae-Gwang, singer Cheon Dan-Bi were appointed ambassadors of Global Care. Thank you for joining us for the last 20 years with Global Care. We still continue moving refugee clinic in Lebanon for Syrian refugees who live with the pain of war more than six years. Tuberculosis prevention project, which had started from five health centers in Morocco, now have extended more than 50 public health centers beyond the Rabat-Sale area to Casablanca, and the maternity health project is also actively proceeding in Hamisset. New life is being born in 10 villages in northern Bangladesh and fresh water from the Battambang River in Cambodia is saving lives of villages. The cholera prevention and disaster risk mitigation projects in Haiti and the Philippines, which had been in disaster, will continue this year as ever. We are trying to make the children of Vietnam’s Lao Cai orphanage and Nepal Tansen Library laugh brightly. The 'congenital facial deformity surgery project' has also been 20 years. We gave a beautiful laugh to a total of 65 neighbors in Myanmar‘s Mandalay and Vietnam’s hue last March. This year is an important year because we hold an election for the 19th president and change of Korea's official development assistance (ODA) policy. Global Care became the head of Korea ngo Council for Overseas development Cooperation (KCOC) which is a coalition of more than 130 NGOs. I sincerely hope that our efforts will become a "digestive agent" of communication and harmony with various organizations. Even in spiritual situation, we gain strength because of Dr. Ahn DongIl started to work with us, who had worked at WHO for last 22 years. We are committed to do our best 'To take care of the weak, and restore the dignity of the underprivileged people' in this spring. I hope you are all with me.

Branch Story 1

Visiting Morocco Branch Jinyoung Park from Global Care

I visited Morocco branch for one month to finish the first year of the ‘Strengthening Maternal Health System through Morocco U-Health Program’ which was newly launched in January, 2016 and to prepare for the second year's project. At first I thought that it was gorgeous and well equipped with various facilities because Morocco was famous as a tourist destination. However, I found a new image of simple Morocco with endless fields outside of the capital of Rabat, wild flowers and countless flocks. Especially, Khemisset, our main project region, was still rural, with horses and donkeys being the main means of transportation rather than cars. I could realize the status of this region and feel the necessity of this program. 10

I also thought about the direction of this program. Through this monitoring, I was able to look at the project environment in real terms, and I was able to think about the necessity of the project in progress and the direction of the project that suits the local situation. Morocco is suffering from the regional gap and a rich-poor gap inside the city. There are only a few basic medical facilities in the rural area so people cannot easily access to medical services. Our branch in Morocco is working on this issue to make the better environment to decrease maternal mortality rate. The branch is conducting maternal health program, especially for women. Maternity health care is not just about providing healthcare services, but it also has an exit strategy that allows the Moroccan government to continue to provide and maintain high quality services after the end of the project. The first year's biggest outcome is the improvement of the medical service environment. Now, women in the rural side can easily access to city hospital or clinic. Both people in this area and medical staffs are satisfied because we formed the trust that they could have professional medical service from the public medical center. Furthermore, we developed a system which includes an application to manage pregnant women’s treatment. The seconds year's program, which will start from this year, is expected to strengthen competence of the medical staffs. We are expecting our program’s achievements could be reflected in Moroccan national policy of public health. Above all, maternal health awareness of maternal and childbirth care and maternal health care is expected to improve and make a difference in life. The most impressive thing when I was staying in Morocco for a month was the enthusiasm of local staff, including the country director. I was impressed not only by the visible results of all the projects in progress but by the country director, the project manager, and volunteers who were working all day and night. Local employees were also enthusiastic about doing what they were entrusted to, and I was able to look forward to the further development of the Moroccan branch. I would like to ask for your continued support and encouragement to the Moroccan branch staff. Thank you. Globalcare 2017 spring

Branch Story 2

After finishing the volunteer work in Vietnam Branch Dispatched member to Vietnam, Jungen Choi

12

In February 2015, I remember that the road to Incheon airport was so crowded. I arrived in Hanoi as a volunteer of NGO on that day. I was a bit nervous. Since I was working in a company for 12 years before becoming a volunteer and I had never lived with my parents until then, the days I would be with new people in a strange country gave me tension and excitement. I heard that there are four seasons in Hanoi from a senior volunteer so I arrived expecting the winter weather, but the warm air over 20 degrees greeted me. It was hard to believe the weather forecast in Hanoi because the weather is fickle. Summer heat in winter, cool autumn in summer, come as a sudden gift. After 15 days, the Smile Operation Project (Congenital facial deformity surgery) was started in Hanoi. Once a year, doctors and nurses come and have surgery. Especially after the project, I was fortunate to have dinner with Ambassador at the Hanoi Embassy. I was anticipated because the country director told me that this is the first time having dinner with the ambassador for the last ten years. Even though I could not help a lot because it was my first activity after the dispatch, it was a very important experience to work together. Two years passed quickly with Interalia Medical Expense Support Program, the Hanoi Medical Student Scholarship, and the Lao Cai Orphanage Donation Management program. The time passed too fast and now, I’m in Korea enjoying the spring weather. When I will think of the past after 10, 20 or 30 years, I think that the last two years of overseas volunteer life in Vietnam will be remembered as the best decision in my life. The world is so broad. The world is wide and there are neighbors and environments I have not seen yet, and many precious experiences that I have learned through them will always be with my memories of life. Book in Book | from Philippine [serialization]

After a story of the typhoon Haiyan. On November 8, 2013, a super-typhoon, which was not measured by a hurricane observer, struck Tacloban. It was only six years since I settled in Tacloban for the Leyte and Samar which are one of the poorest areas in the Philippines. After six hours of fighting against strong winds and stormy rainwater, I was able to safely protect three children, my wife, and my dog, 'Bobbie.' The traces of the typhoon was horrible. The roof tore out by the wind and only the structure- steel pipe- was there. The tree of the yard was roots and disappeared, and the big doghouse, built with iron bars, rolled a few laps and stuck it upside down on the front window. The house was covered with broken glass all over and the iron gate was wrinkled like paper. I thought that it will be alright if I clean my house for few days. I looked around our town. What I thought was totally wrong. On the street, the smell of rotten body was shaken, and as we walked to the seaside town, the bodies floated in the middle of the sea. It reminded me of mannequin. Most of the streets were not available because it was blocked up with cars, trees and utility pole. There was no water. Telephone communication was interrupted. People stole food. The city went into almost anarchy. Especially, the foreigners were plundered and attacked. 14

At night, people from the town came into my house. Their cloth was wet and feet was covered with blood. 40 people came in so we did not have enough food. After four days, we had to gather all foods from the city. We could not access to relief goods or foods even after four days from the disaster. The City of Tacloban was full with the dead body and the rain continued. The dead bodies were floating and people started to drink contaminated water. There was a possibility of infectious diseases. I decided to evacuate my wife and three children to protect them from this situation. However, it was not easy. I heard that they can broad the U.S air force plane if they arrive at the airport. But it was not impossible to move them to the airport because it takes 5 hours to the airport by foot. There was no way to move them by car because of the street situation. I did not want to expose my children to such disastrous environment. I could not ensure their safety because we are the foreigners. The city was in anarchy state. Finally, my wife and children arrived in Manilla. I could not see them for a while. Instead, I started relief activities.

To be continued.

A total of 6 new volunteers were selected from last November after completing documents, interviews, and physical examinations. In early February, they also successfully completed two weeks of KCOC’s domestic training. On February 21, we had the time to encourage the volunteers who were in the process of dispatching and celebrated the 20th anniversary of Global Care. The volunteers expressed their willingness to commit themselves to the future as volunteers. We dispatched the new volunteers to Morocco, the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia on February 28. The new 6 volunteers and 2 existing volunteers will work with Global Care to help each branch's project over the next year. Please support them who will be doing their best this year.

I was interested in voluntary service since I was young because of the influence of my father who was doing medical service in Southeast Asia. I have been dispatched to ‘Khemisset’ in Morocco. My job is to manage and support maternity health care projects in 20 health centers. Although I am here to serve as supporting role, I will do my best for a year as it is also important to act as a supporting actor in a good movie.

I have always thought that I want to live with local people because of my interest in other cultures. These thoughts led me to Morocco where I am responsible for local news, public relations and administrative affairs. During the period of dispatch, I will stay with healthy body and mind and will come back.

I wanted to take my first step towards a long cherished dream and I wrote an application, and now I am in Cambodia. For a year, I am in charge of health and hygiene project in Cambodia. I will work with other people wisely and try not to interrupt and I will stay strong. Thank you.

Work to change people’s lives Hanna Lee, from Global Care

‘Injee club', with the start of Global Care, has already been 20 years. We spent busy days from the beginning of the year for the preparation of surgical project this year as well. A total of 33 medical personnel, divided into two teams, came back with a total of 65 operations in Vietnam and Myanmar from March 18 to 24. Countries in which Injee club is active are known as not only developing countries, but popular holiday places. The gap between rich and poor is enormous and there are a lot of poor people, who do not have the least medical service. For this reason, many people are born with malformations or become deformed by accident and they could not have surgery. Injee club has been has been providing free surgeries for those people even they give up their break for the past 20 years. A doctor from this surgical project said “other doctors work to save people's lives, but plastic surgeons do things that change people's lives.” The children that I met before the surgery at the local clinic were really cute and beautiful. There is a saying that the scent of flowers goes a hundred li, and the scent of a person goes ten thousand li. Love of the medical staffs that have been together for the last 20 years and sponsors were conveyed to children in Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos. And this spring, I hope that fragrant smile as floral aroma that was regained after the surgery could flow into the supporters as well.
