LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Global Glimpse community, The Global Glimpse journey began 10 years ago. From the beginning, we have been driven by a belief that human connection is the foundation for all that is good, real, and important in our world. It may sound simple, but it isn’t. It takes a tremendous amount of passion, courage, and commitment to wake up every day for a decade and work to change mindsets and the systems and structures that make up our society. In 2017, we served 933 diverse high school students from 65 schools. Our students traveled to cities and towns across Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador, and each group was received with open arms. Our students felt the weight of the separation, racism, fear and hatred that is crippling the United States. Instead of throwing their hands up, they chose to show up, stand up, and step up for each other and for the future that they want to build for their communities, our international partners, and for our world. These young people are truly our future. Providing opportunities for them to connect on a human level across social, economic, racial, cultural, and physical divides has never been more important. Ten years is a significant period of time to dedicate to anything, especially in today’s world of constantly shifting priorities and slick start-ups. Over the years, I have often felt that the challenges we faced were insurmountable. As a leader, I am consistently pushed to relearn the most important lessons we teach our students; that we must learn early and continue to remind one another to take risks and step out of our comfort zone. That is where growth begins. I remain deeply inspired, wildly ambitious, and incredibly motivated to do whatever I can to support a new generation of young leaders who represent this country. These youth truly represent our country’s diversity and we must support them to develop the perspective, networks, skills and agency they need to collaborate and move this nation and our world forward. I am grateful every day for the opportunity to learn and grow while leading this incredible organization. A tremendous thank you to the thousands of students, families, teachers, administrators, donors, international partners, team members, and supporters who have given me invaluable guidance, inspiration, and support over the past ten years. I truly stand on the shoulders of giants. With respect and appreciation,
Eliza Pesuit
Executive Director Global Glimpse

THE GLOBAL GLIMPSE MISSION We work to inspire America’s next generation to become responsible global citizens through after school programming and immersive travel in the developing world.

OUR WORK Global Glimpse partners with high schools across the country to provide diverse students with a two-year leadership, global education, and service learning program centered on a transformative immersion experience in a developing country. Our students come from all walks of life and all backgrounds; diversity is at the core of our work. We believe that closing the achievement gap requires a significant investment in creating opportunities for low-income youth to gain concrete skills as well as the ability to work across socioeconomic lines. It is also important for youth from more affluent backgrounds to understand the challenges low-income communities face and build connections across socioeconomic divides. Through Global Glimpse, students from all backgrounds develop a shared commitment to act on issues of injustice in their communities and in the greater world.
“I became friends with many people from different backgrounds, and I think our differences were one of the reasons why our relationships were strong. Learning the perspectives of others was new and interesting, and being able to share our problems and experiences that we may never have encountered before is what made us even stronger.

CORE VALUES
ACCESS We are committed to making experiential global education accessible to students from all socioeconomic backgrounds.
OUR PROGRAM MODEL SCHOOL-BASED WORKSHOPS
SUSTAINABILITY We build long-term partnerships with U.S. high schools and we invest in international communities in Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador.
Enrichment programming during the junior year of high school exposes students to youth leadership, globalization, and cultural awareness and prepares them for the in-country immersion experience.
INTERNATIONAL IMMERSION Students spend 15 days the summer after their junior year immersed in daily life in a developing country. The international experience focuses on leadership development, global education, and service learning.
SCALE We have developed a sliding scale fee-for-service model that allows us to scale our impact rapidly.

ALUMNI AMBASSADOR PROGRAM During their senior year, students participate in a follow-on leadership program. Alumni mentor the next group of students at their school, prepare for college, and gain exposure to a range of professional mentors.
HOW FAR WE’VE COME Over the past 10 years, Global Glimpse has served over 4,600 students and 460 educators across 66 high schools in the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Chicago, and Western Massachusetts and six national college preparatory organizations. Founded in 2007, we launched our first programs a year later in partnership with 10 low-income Bay Area high schools. Since then, we have grown more than ten-fold, expanding in the Bay Area and successfully launching regional programs in New York (2013), Chicago (2015), and Western Massachusetts (2017).

2017 PROGRAMS Global Glimpse gives a face to poverty, a voice to history, a vision and a story to development. We open a window into another world for students while constantly tying their experience back to their lives and communities in the United States. Our program pushes young people to confront a different reality at a young age. Through this challenging and inspiring experience, they gain invaluable perspective on the importance of education, on their privilege as U.S. citizens and residents, and, most importantly, on their ability to drive change in their communities and in the world. When you remove students from their neighborhoods and everything that is familiar to them, you give them a new set of eyes and the ability to evaluate not only a wider world, but also the communities they call home.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM Our students spend 15 days immersed in daily life in Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, or Ecuador during the summer after their junior year of high school. Students travel in diverse groups of 20 and each delegation is supported by two U.S. educators and two international program staff. Our international staff works closely with local partners to develop highly educational programs that allow students to explore a range of topics through the lenses of history, culture, politics, poverty, education, development, and business. Students also tutor local peers in English throughout their trip and participate in a “Community Action Project” (CAP), a student-designed project developed and executed in partnership with a local community organization.

Nicaragua is a peaceful nation in the heart of Central America with a complex history and breathtaking natural beauty. We have operated programs in Nicaragua since 2008. Global Glimpse is the largest international youth travel program in the country now, with eight program sites across four cities. Our Nicaragua programs give students a 360-degree view of a dynamic developing nation with special focus on the country’s rich cultural heritage, revolutionary past, socialist government, and market position in the dynamic global coffee trade. With strong national and local relationships and nearly a decade of experience, our programs in Nicaragua provide a profound learning experience for students.
Living Like a Local Pictured is Doña Yubelkis Ramos Aguilar, member of the Tejerina community in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Our students spend “Living Like a Local” day with a host family. Doña Yubelkis always welcomes our students with open arms. She takes great pride in teaching them how to make tortillas.

English Tutoring Pictured is a Global Glimpse student teaching English in Constanza, DR. Our students teach daily English classes for Dominican youth and each class is comprised of 10-20 local students. Dominicans who speak fluent English have greater economic opportunities, but high quality English classes are costly and inaccessible to young people in smaller cities and towns.

The Dominican Republic (DR) is an island nation and one of the Caribbean’s most geographically diverse countries with energetic people and a vibrant, music-filled culture. We began working in the DR in 2013 and our programs have quickly expanded to four cities. Our DR programs engage bilingual Dominican youth to help build experiential learning experiences for our U.S. students. These Dominican youth also support our students to teach English classes for local community members. Programs in the DR provide students with perspective on education, global business, politics, history, and culture with a special focus on migration and inequality. Students are exposed to the complex relations between Haiti and the DR, as well as the impact that high immigration rates to the U.S. has on the economy and social life in the DR.

Sitting on the equator between Colombia and Peru, Ecuador boasts breathtaking scenery, biodiversity, a strong indigenous presence, beautiful artisan crafts, and bustling markets. We launched our programs in Ecuador in 2015. Our diverse sites in the Andean highlands of Riobamba expose students to the high-stakes interplay between environmental preservation, economic development, and indigenous worldviews. Our Ecuador programs have a strong focus on indigenous rights, along with history, culture, global business, and education. Students grapple with the positive and negative implications of economic progress and its impact on indigenous communities and the environment.
Indigenous Worldviews On Indigenous Worldviews Day, our students visit the community of Cacha. They meet the Puruhรก people, whose ancient culture emphasizes respect for their roots and the gifts of wisdom from their ancestors. Angie and Don Segundo kindly share their unique worldview and perspectives on life, traditions, history, food and family.

ALUMNI AMBASSADOR PROGRAM Students return from their international experience inspired and motivated to give back to their home communities. In their senior year, they apply practical lessons learned during the summer through our Alumni Ambassador leadership program as they volunteer in their local communities and navigate the college admissions process. Alumni Ambassadors become leaders in their schools by mentoring the next generation of Global Glimpse students. They also participate in a series of weekend summits that bring together diverse alumni from across their region. Through this program, students further develop confidence in public speaking and networking skills in preparation for college and careers.

41% of our students are the first in their family to attend college. In this summit, college-age alumni support Ambassadors to navigate the college admissions process and write about their Global Glimpse experience on college applications.
Ambassadors learn the importance and power of storytelling as a tool for social change. Students then reflect on their Global Glimpse experience, draft their personal stories and practice their public speaking skills.
Ambassadors develop an understanding of cross-sector career opportunities, practice mock interviews, and learn to network by engaging in conversations with mentors from a range of professions.
Ambassadors celebrate their accomplishments, learn about opportunities in college, and develop a plan to carry the Global Glimpse spirit forward during the transition into the next stage of their lives.

OUR IMPACT Through our programs, students develop a deep sense of personal and social responsibility and the skills, motivation, and perspective they need to succeed in college and careers in order to drive positive change in their communities. We diligently evaluate the impact of all of our programming on students, parents, educators, and community partners. We incorporate feedback and learning from annual post-program and alumni surveys to improve each component of our program. Our surveys evaluate short-term outcomes in participants’ awareness, agency, and engagement as well as long-term outcomes in global competence, college persistence, and leadership. As we enter our next phase of growth, we will increase our focus on alumni engagement and measuring the long-term impact of our programs.

ALUMNI IMPACT The Global Glimpse experience is fundamental for students and prepares them to navigate the social and emotional challenges of life after high school. Participating in college and career summits with current Global Glimpse students is one way our alumni stay connected to their Global Glimpse experience, share their stories, and help guide younger students on their journeys. We partner with a range of companies and organizations to pipeline our college-age alumni into prestigious scholarships, fellowships, internships, and job opportunities. Internally, we prioritize alumni on our Rising Leaders Councils, and for positions as Global Glimpse Leaders and interns, as well as prime candidates for our U.S. and international staff roles.

YEAR IN REVIEW We were so grateful to celebrate our first decade of impact in 2017 with 10 Year Anniversary celebrations in San Francisco and New York, and a special anniversary leadership trip to the Dominican Republic. Over the past ten years our work has transformed the lives of thousands of students. Along the way we have touched hundreds of families, educators, donors and communities in the U.S. and in Latin America. It has truly taken a global effort over many years to bring the Global Glimpse vision to life.
“Global Glimpse showed me that there is more to the world than the broken block I lived on, and that I had the right and the need to go out and explore it. I no longer feel like travel is a faraway dream, and I will never have to worry about living in ignorance or mediocrity.
