Member Spotlight: International Medical Corps is a global, humanitarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs. Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a private, voluntary, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. Mission: To improve the quality of life through health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in under-served communities worldwide.

GHC launched its NEW and IMPROVED website! Along with its new look, GHC's website will serve as an information and advocacy hub for its members. We are always accepting reports, tools, studies, and other materials that are of relevance to the global health community at large. Also, GHC is building a gallery of photos to display its members' efforts and initiatives around the world. If your organization would like to assist the community in becoming better advocates, communicators, and experts in the field, please consider sharing your resources with us.

Come to GHC's upcoming evening salon to reconnect, exchange ideas, and chat with GHC and its members about your priorities and plans. The first salon will take place at the end of February 2015. More details will be announced soon.

Attention GHC members: GHC has begun planning for the 68th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva from May 18-23. If you are a member in good standing and would like to be part of GHC's delegation to WHA, please fill out this survey now. The GHC delegation will have access to hotel room blocks next month, along with policy scrums, information sessions, and more.


Global Health Roundup 

 

 

This week in Berlin, donors pledged over $7 billion, including $1 billion from the United States, for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance for 2016-2020. The strong show of support ensures vaccines can continue to reach those in low resource settings, saving the lives of 5-6 million people in the coming years. GHC member, IntraHealth International, announced the acquisition of Switchboard, an award-winning California-based nonprofit organization. Switchboard's promising mobile phone-based model for low- and middle-income countries joins ministries of health, private mobile phone companies and health workers to improve real-time access to critical information and peer-to-peer communication. Nominations are now open for the 2015 Roux Prize, a $100,000 award launched in 2013 to recognize individuals or groups who have used disease burden evidence to take action that makes people healthier. The prize was founded by philanthropists David and Barbara Roux and is awarded annually by GHC Member the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation(IHME).

Advocacy Update . 

President Obama is expected to release his recommended budget for FY2016 next week. GHC will provide an overview of the proposed funding for global health accounts when it is released. Congress is expected to take up the budget in the spring.
