GHC is headed to the Sixty-eighth World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva in mid-May. Read more about preparing for the meeting in the Upcoming GHC Events and Global Health Roundup sections below. On April 16, GHC and Global Health Fellows Program II co-hosted the second annual The Future of Global Health (TFGH15) unconference at the Hamilton Live in Washington, DC. GHC would like to thank our mentors, sponsors and volunteers for all of their support. A special thanks to all those who attended and participated in the conversation hubs, oneon-one mentor sessions, and fun global health activities. April was a very busy month, but time was dedicated to recognizing the importance of maternal health and rights and vaccines. For International Maternal Health and Rights Day, Dr. Christine Sow, President and Executive Director of GHC, wrote a blog on "Ensuring Maternal Health and Rights is Central to Sustainable Development." Also, recognizing the importance of frontline health care workers in vaccination campaigns, Dr. Sow contributed a blog to the #ProtectingKids blog series for World Immunization Week on "Eradicating Polio Requires Protecting Vaccinators."

Global Health Roundup  

HHS's Office of Global Affairs Stakeholder Listening Session will take place on May 8 from 10:30 AM -12:00 PM EDT in preparation for the WHA. This listening session will utilize knowledge, ideas, feedback, and suggestions from all communities interested in and affected by the WHA agenda. Organized around the interests and perspectives of various stakeholder communities, the session be open to public comment. RSVP no later than Friday, May 1. . Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has issued a call for nominations to Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to fill a vacant seat on the Gavi Board. The two-year term would begin July 1. As a public-private partnership, Gavi's engagement with civil society should reflect their majorroles in global immunization and child health, and encourage the further development and inclusion of CSOs within Gavi's governance structures. Deadline to complete applications is May 8. Women Deliver is currently encouraging incredible advocates, ages 30 and older, to apply for a scholarship to attend the Women Deliver 2016 Conference. The conference is the largest global conference on girls and women's health, rights, and well-being in the last decade, bringing together advocates, researchers, policymakers, young people, media, private sector representatives, civil society, government representatives, and global influencers. Scholarships to attend the Conference are awarded to advocates who have demonstrated their commitment to advancing the health, rights, and well-being of girls and women in their community and around the world. The deadline to apply is May 1. Earlier this week, the O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University announced the launch of The Lancet - O'Neill Institute, Georgetown University Commission on Global Health and the Law. The Commission's focus is that law should be viewed as a major determinant of health and safety and can be utilized as a powerful and innovative tool to address pressing global health concerns. Members of the Commission will reflect diverse geographical backgrounds and multiple sectors such as international organizations, governments, academia and society. Read more.


Advocacy Update 

 

USAID, the World Bank and WHO released a draft document on "Health Measurement and Accountability in Post-2015: A Common Roadmap" in the lead up to the Measurement and Accountability for Results in Health Summit in June in Washington, DC. GHC's Health in Post-2015 Roundtable and Action for Global Health (AfGH) provided feedback on the draft, which is expected to be finalized in time for the Summit. . FY16 Budget Update: The House Appropriations Committee adopted FY16 funding allocations for the subcommittees this week. Known as 302(b) allocations, these allocations set a spending cap for each appropriations bill. The allocation for the State and Foreign Operations appropriations bill, which funds USAID and the State Department, is set at $47.7 billion ($7 billion of this will come from Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) funding). This is 6.3%, or $3.2 billion, less than enacted funding for FY15. As of today, the Senate Appropriations Committee has not yet adopted 302(b) allocations. Similar figures to the House are expected, as the House allocations are close to funding levels in the proposed Senate Budget Resolution.
