Upcoming GHC Events
In response to increasing interest in our community about the U.S. Government's Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) and global health security overall, the GHC Global Health Security Roundtable will hold its first meeting on September 14. This roundtable will meet regularly to coordinate information and ensure that GHC members optimize opportunities to be part of the dialogue around GHSA/GHS. The roundtable is open to GHC members and invited organizations. To receive more details about the meeting, email us. GHC is partnering with Action for Global Health (AfGH) to deliver a webinar on September 2, Health Financing: Unpacking trends in ODA for Health. AfGH tracks European donor performance in comparison to their economic capacity and the potential of funding for health. The webinar will look at new actors in development assistance for health, reflect upon trends in financing such as the increased use of loans in ODA, and unpack health ODA to show main components of aid, and where aid is going. Register for the webinar.
The Global Financing Facility (GFF) will support the Every Woman Every Child (EWEC) movement as an important financing facility for reproductive, maternal, child and adolescent health (RMCAH). The GFF was launched at the Addis Ababa Financing for Development Conference (FfD3) in July and work is already underway in four front-runner countries - Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia and DRC, with an additional 8 countries recently identified. GHC, in collaboration with the World Bank and other GFF partners, will host a briefing for civil society on GFF status, priorities and next steps on September 3. Stay tuned for more details.
Global Health Roundup
In early August, 193 governments agreed to text defining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will be adopted at the UN summit in New York City in late September. Read the final draft of the 2030 Action Agenda for Sustainable Development. In a detailed update, GHC member Family Care International and its advocacy partners look at how and to what extent sexual and reproductive health and rights, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (SRMNCAH) have been included in the 2030 Action Agenda for Sustainable Development document. The update also looks at the broader issues of human rights, gender equality, youth and civil society. Led by CARE International and supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Center for Excellence is an online venue for NGOs to report and track recent and upcoming advocacy trips. Advocacy Update
Although the Fiscal Year (FY) 2016 appropriations process is still ongoing, it is time to begin thinking about the FY17 budget. With input from the global health advocacy community, GHC provided its recommendations and justifications for key global health accounts to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the federal agency which helps the administration prepare its proposed budget. Last week, GHC and a small group of members met with OMB to discuss the recommendations and discuss the impact of U.S. global health programs around the world. The President's proposed budget for FY17 will come out next spring.
