ANDRE DE GRASSE is one of the most accomplished Olympians in Canadian history—but he’s not interested in being at the top alone. Instead, he’s made it his mission to help student athletes reach their own unique potential.
“Realistically, most track athletes don’t get to the Olympics,” De Grasse explained. “Fewer still are able to make a sustainable career out of running track the way I have.”
Raised by a single mother under tight financial constraints, De Grasse benefitted from the generosity of his community—a fact he credits heavily for his success. The support he received helped him manage the financial
I had some real natural talent.”
De Grasse recalled. “He told me that I could use track to earn a scholarship to a university and even make it to the Olympics if I really dedicated myself.”
Ultimately, Sharpe was right, but the road to success was filled with a few roadblocks that threatened to stall Andre from fulfilling his goals.
“I qualified to represent Canada at the Pan Am Junior Championships shortly after getting into track,” De Grasse shared. “I was so excited until I found out I was responsible for the costs to get to Colombia where the meet was taking place.”
The costs posed a huge barrier, but once again, Sharpe made all the difference.
soon as I had the means of my own and a platform to help other young athletes, that’s what I did.”
Paying it forward has been De Grasse’s way of showing his gratitude to his community. He started his own foundation, the Andre De Grasse Family Foundation, which is committed to inspiring and empowering youth through access to sports, education, and healthcare. The Foundation, which started in 2018, partners with charitable organizations to bring various community initiatives to life, such as hosting a Thanksgiving Day Lunch for hundreds of families with Toronto Community Housing. In partnership with Athletics Canada and with the sponsorship support of Vesta
At the same time, the program provides a pathway for a collegiate scholarship they otherwise wouldn't earn.
“The funding and mentorship we provide through the program is really important to ensure the students secure scholarships to universities that will prepare them for a life after track,” he explained.
When these students succeed, it’s a win for the program and the country, as some of the athletes will go on to represent Canada on international stage.
“It’s an amazing feeling to see these athletes fulfilling their potential in the classroom and on the track as a result of this program I started with Tony,”
De Grasse shared. With the ADG Future
said. “It’s ok to ask for help when you need it.”
One such athlete is Destiny Emuze, who was supported through his high school years by the ADG Future Champions Scholarship Program. Emuze, who immigrated to Canada with his brother and single mother, faced financial obstacles that made competing in track difficult. With the support of the Foundation, he was able to train and compete at a high level, eventually earning a full four-year scholarship to an NCAA Division I school—the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Today, he holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology specializing in rehabilitation and is pursuing his master’s in Rehabilitation
OFF THE TRACK AND INTO COMMUNITIES
De Grasse's impact doesn’t stop with track. Through the Andre De Grasse Family Foundation, he has extended his philanthropic reach by partnering with organizations with similar missions to pave the way for bright futures.
“The mission of my foundation is to inspire and empower youth through access to sport, education, and healthcare,” De Grasse explained. “So we consider organizations that align with our mission, like Kids Help Phone, for example.”
A long-time partner of the Foundation, Kids Help Phone teamed up with De Grasse to develop and launch the Race With Me Virtual Challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We knew kids were struggling with their mental health as a result of not getting outside and having a healthy routine,” he said. “So we challenged kids to go to their local 400m track and
run one lap as fast as they could, then go back each week for eight weeks to see how much they could improve.”
The initiative used social media to meet young athletes where they were, building an online community of kids that encouraged participation by allowing them to upload results, share pictures and videos, and earn prizes.
All the while, the community served as a way to form connections with other young runners, fostering an online culture of support and empowerment that extended into offline wellness.
“Although it wasn’t our primary goal, we ended up raising $25,000 for Kids Help Phone through the challenge,” De Grasse noted.
Looking ahead, he has even bigger goals for the future of the Foundation.
“We’re going to raise a minimum of $1 million between now and the 2028 Olympics,” he announced.
“These funds will be used to create the ADG Future Champions Legacy Fund so that our scholarship program can live on indefinitely to fund future generations of student-athletes.”
For De Grasse, success is measured not in medals but in community impact. Across the Andre De Grasse Family Foundation’s range of initiatives and De Grasse’s entrepreneurial initiative, Ignite Ventures, the athlete is building a stronger future for Canadians.
“Similar to how I use my platform and resources to empower young track athletes via the ADG Future Champions Program, I’m doing the same with businesses that are looking to grow with my support,” he said.
He’s joined the ownership group for AFC Toronto, a founding club in Canada’s new Northern Super
League. Set to kick off this spring, AFC Toronto is a landmark step for Canadian women’s professional soccer, giving female players a domestic professional league to compete in—something previous generations never had.
“I was raised by a single mother, I’m a proud dad of a little girl, and my partner Nia is a professional track athlete,” he said. “So anything I can do to help build up women’s professional sports, I’m going to do it!”
But De Grasse’s ventures aren’t contained to sports either— Headversity helps corporations empower their employees with mental well-being tools and personalized training, while HOVR, a recent addition to Ignite Ventures, is a Toronto-based ondemand ride-share service allowing drivers to earn more money. De Grasse’s wine labels, 19.62 and SEVEN, donate $5 from each bottle sold to his foundation.
“For sure, I want my legacy to extend beyond my
accomplishments on the track. I’d like people to think of me as someone who contributed to the culture of mentorship in my sport,” he said. “But I also want to be known as someone who inspired and empowered Canadians, young and old, to reach their own unique potential in life.”
That philosophy is the overarching message in his book, IGNITE: Unlock the Hidden Potential Within, which shares the lessons he’s learned throughout his journey, and in Race With Me!, his bestselling illustrated children’s book that encourages young readers to pursue their dreams.
“Whether it’s on the track, in business, or in life, I want people to believe in themselves,” he said. “I was given opportunities because others saw potential in me. Now, it’s my turn to do the same for the next generation.”

Elena was only 30 years old when she first experienced symptoms of menopause. She was on a cruise with her boyfriend, and she suddenly was hit by waves of nausea. Her heart started pounding out of nowhere. She was overheated, and nothing could cool her down. When others on the cruise came down with a stomach bug, she chalked these symptoms up to a weird combination of the flu, heat, and seasickness.
Her boyfriend proposed on the cruise, and they came home excited to plan for their future together.
But when she got home, the symptoms persisted. Then, her period, which had always been regular, started to fluctuate. First, it got shorter and shorter. Then, one month, it was almost six days late. Concerned that something was wrong, she contacted her doctor. After bloodwork that showed unusually high levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and other tests, she got devastating news at a follow-up appointment.
The diagnosis? Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI)—a term that refers to when a woman under 40 goes through menopause.
“It appears that you’re entering menopause,” said her doctor. “It
might just be a phase that will correct itself. But you’re young and recently engaged. If you want to have a baby, you’re going to need to see a fertility specialist because whatever is happening to you is happening fast.”
NAVIGATING A FERTILITY JOURNEY
“I was in shock,” said Elena, recalling the days after that conversation. “I immediately started researching the best doctors for infertility.”
First, she was told she would have to wait two years to see the specialist she wanted to work with. But her tests indicated that she didn’t have that much time.
With the support of her primary care physician, her partner, determination and countless follow-up calls, she finally got an appointment—less than a year after her initial diagnosis.
For the next year and a half, Elena underwent aggressive in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. But the process came with a cost. Once the fertility treatments were complete, she would enter full menopause even earlier.
“It’s an emotional roller coaster because your hormones are
up and down. You’re happy one minute, and you’re down and crying for three hours the next,” explained Elena. “As a woman, you’re thinking, ‘Why am I not able to bear a child? Maybe I’m not good enough.’”
Going into the process, Elena knew she only had a 40 to 50 per cent chance of successfully conceiving a child. But that didn’t make it any less difficult when they got the news that they had lost their last viable embryo.
“When it didn’t come through, that’s when I hit a very dark, dark, dark point. I hadn’t eaten for a week. I mourned the greatest death. It’s what you want to do, what you want to create. But as time passes, you make peace with things.”
While processing the grief of knowing that she wouldn’t be able to give birth to the child she’d dreamed of, Elena was experiencing significant hormonal shifts and symptoms of menopause: hot flashes, headaches and sleeplessness. She was only 35.
That’s when she was referred to Dr. Lindsey Shirreff at Mount Sinai Hospital, part of Sinai
Health, to help her manage her symptoms. They started with bloodwork and then a trial of medications. Elena came once a month as they explored the treatment plan that worked best for her. Eventually, they settled on hormone replacement therapy, and she was able to reduce the frequency of her visits to every three months as her symptoms subsided.
“I wish every woman had the opportunity to have her as a doctor,” said Elena. “I’ll research, and I’ll ask questions. Then Dr. Shirreff will get on her own computer and we’ll research together. She’s so hands-on and she always listens to me.”
“The support system here at Mount Sinai needs to be shared.”
Elena is grateful for the support she’s received from Sinai Health as she navigates a complex, often misunderstood condition. That’s why she is excited about the future of the Weston and O’Born Centre for Mature Women’s Health at Mount Sinai Hospital. Supported by a generous community of donors, the Centre aims
to address the gaps in care and research that so many Canadian women experience throughout their lifetimes when it comes to menopause, urogynaecology, conditions like POI, and more.
“This work is so important because, in general, doctors are not taught a lot about menopause,” shared Elena. “So, when you go to your family physician, they have no idea how to help or treat you.”
By expanding clinical capacity, training more physicians in caring for menopausal women, and spearheading new research into conditions related to mature women’s health, the Centre will provide instrumental support to women like Elena when they need it most.
“There needs to be help for women. There needs to be guidance. I was lucky because I had a great doctor who took my concerns seriously,” said Elena. “The support system here, at Mount Sinai Hospital is huge and it needs to be shared.”

The path to a sustainable future is paved with innovation—across industries, creative minds are seeking out new ways to make little luxuries more accessible and more eco-friendly. In the car world, Wraptors Inc. is steering automotive customization into a greener future. And as the largest vehicle wrap specialist around the globe, they’re the perfect choice to take the wheel. With over 16 locations in regions including Canada, Florida, South Africa, and Dubai, Wraptors Inc. is proving that sleek design doesn’t have to come at a cost to the environment. That’s why they’re launching the world’s first plantbased car detailing product line in 7-Eleven stores nationwide— custom vehicle design has never been more accessible or more eco-friendly.
But even before this launch, Wraptors Inc. has never been a stranger to turning heads. For over a decade, they’ve set industry standards in vehicle wraps, starlight installations, window tinting, and paint protection films. Led by Stanislav Kravtchouk and Christel Kravchuk—fondly
known as Mr. Wraptors—their expertise has garnered a clientele of car enthusiasts, celebrities, and professional athletes. Their mission is to innovate products that offer car enthusiasts eco-friendly alternatives without sacrificing performance or style.
A GREENER ALTERNATIVE
Car wraps are crafted from thin vinyl materials that conform to every curve of the vehicle, eliminating the need for multiple layers of paint. Unlike traditional paint jobs that often involve sanding off the old paint, vinyl wraps can be applied directly
over the original surface.
Even better, removing your car wrap is simple and non-destructive, allowing for easy updates or changes without sanding or re-painting. Traditional car painting, with its energy-intensive processes and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), is a well-documented environmental offender. In contrast, Wraptors’ vinyl wraps help minimize pollution and waste while conserving energy and water.
Now, Wraptors Inc. is bringing sustainability directly to consumers with the release of their first plant-based car detailing product line. Easy to use
and environmentally friendly, it promises to be a game-changer for car enthusiasts looking to reduce their carbon footprint.
“This partnership is about convenience and eco-consciousness,” said Kravtchouk. “We want consumers to have easy access to products that support their environmental goals and their customized style.”
It's part of their eco-friendly product line, which includes ceramic coating, tire shiner, interior shiner, glass cleaner, and car shampoo—all plantbased and all made in Canada. On top of that, the products are locally made and crafted at
the Wraptors Farah Co Packing Factory in Mississauga. It’s a commitment to local that boosts job creation, while at the same time making a global impact in the world of luxury vehicles and custom creativity.
THE ROAD AHEAD Switching to plant-based car detailing has countless potential advantages, ranging from lower air pollution to less plastic waste. As consumer awareness of environmental issues grows, this innovation could transform the automotive industry, inspiring a transition toward more sustainable practices in custom design.
For their part, Wraptors Inc. isn’t stopping with plant-based detailing products. Looking ahead, they plan to roll out additional eco-friendly innovations, including materials that further reduce emissions and waste.
“This is just the beginning,” said Kravtchouk. “We see ourselves as pioneers, not only in car customization but also in driving environmental responsibility in the automotive world.”

HOW CAN WE ADDRESS A
PROBLEM WE REFUSE TO NAME?
An urgent crisis has been steadily rising in Ontario—one that continues to claim lives and disproportionately impacts women, girls, and gender diverse people. Gender-based violence (GBV) and intimate partner violence (IPV) remain at alarmingly high levels, it is high time the provincial government recognize the extent of this crisis for what it is: an epidemic. We cannot change what we refuse to name.
YWCA Toronto, an organization leading and supporting advocacy for gender and racial equity and poverty reduction, understands that the first step to meaningful change is recognition, and they are not alone in this thinking. For the past two years, on December 6—the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women—YWCA Toronto has mobilized more than 150 organizations to sign an open letter urging the Ontario government to declare IPV an epidemic.
THE LINK BETWEEN GENDERBASED VIOLENCE AND HOUSING INSECURITY
Through supportive services, housing programs, and advocacy, YWCA Toronto
works to address the systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality and violence in our city and recognize the link between access to housing and gender-based violence.
Housing is a fundamental human right, yet for many women and gender diverse people, it remains out of reach. GBV, including physical, emotional, sexual, and economic violence, is one of the leading causes of housing insecurity and homelessness among women and gender diverse people, forcing many to remain in unsafe situations due to a lack of viable alternatives. Current housing models do not adequately account for the unique needs of survivors, leaving them to choose between precarious housing or continued exposure to violence.
YWCA Toronto understands that early intervention and prevention efforts save lives, including investments in affordable housing and supportive services; their programming includes emergency and violence against women shelters, the Breakthrough program, which offers traumainformed counselling, and Here to Help, which supports mothers and children affected by intimate partner violence.
THE CALL FOR POLITICAL ACTION
In 2022, the Ontario coroner’s inquest into
the 2015 triple femicide of Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk, and Nathalie Warmerdam in the Ottawa Valley put forward 86 recommendations to address IPV. The very first recommendation was to declare IPV an epidemic. Despite overwhelming evidence and the support of more than 99 municipalities across Ontario, the provincial government has yet to act.
By not declaring IPV an epidemic, the message is clear—that the safety and wellbeing of women, girls, and gender diverse people are not political priorities. This inaction comes at a devastating cost: in the past year alone, at least 62 lives have been lost to femicide in Ontario. Disproportionately impacted by this violence are Indigenous, Black, racialized, senior and newcomer women, women living with disabilities, and trans women, who all face unique vulnerabilities within systems that continue to fail them.
While the Ontario government has expressed some willingness to move forward—passing Bill 173: Intimate Partner Violence Epidemic Act through a second reading in April 2024—the bill has remained stalled. With the Ontario election now behind us, YWCA Toronto, alongside survivors, families impacted by IPV, antiGBV organizations and advocates, is urging
the Ontario government to prioritize and pass Bill 173: Intimate Partner Violence Epidemic Act, 2024, once and for all.
YWCA Toronto calls for a holistic approach to addressing this violence, beginning with declaring IPV an epidemic and investing in violence prevention and early intervention programs. It includes stabilizing funding for and expanding the shelter system and ensuring long-term housing solutions are readily available—survivors need more than emergency shelter; they need permanent, accessible, and affordable housing with wraparound support services. Femicide and IPV touch every part of Ontario—from urban centres to rural communities. Ontario must act now by declaring IPV an epidemic and committing to the systemic changes required to protect women, girls, and gender diverse people.

For more than three decades, Fife House has been a vital support system for individuals and families in Toronto and the GTA who are living with HIV/AIDS and facing housing insecurity or homelessness. Founded in 1988 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Fife House was created to ensure that those affected by the disease had access to safe, stable housing and the support services needed to thrive. Today, the organization remains dedicated to adapting to the evolving needs of its community while addressing the growing demand for supportive housing and essential care services.
A LIFELINE FOR
1,200 PEOPLE EACH YEAR
Fife House is Canada’s largest non-profit provider of supportive housing for people living with HIV/AIDS. The organization serves over 1,200 individuals annually, offering a combination of transitional and long-term housing across six main residences and multiple satellite sites in Toronto.
However, Fife House does more than provide housing—it delivers holistic support services designed to help individuals regain independence, manage their health, and improve their
quality of life. These services include case management to assist clients in navigating healthcare and social services, food security programs to ensure access to nutritious meals, addictions and mental health support, and socio-recreational and skills-building activities to promote personal growth and social inclusion.
Despite advancements in HIV treatment, the need for Fife House’s services is greater than ever. The challenges faced by people living with HIV/AIDS continue to grow, making supportive housing and comprehensive care essential.
HIV has no cure. While modern medications help manage the disease, the number of new HIV cases in Canada has been rising, making inequities in access to prevention and treatment all the more obvious and highlighting the ways that stigma and discrimination persist.
Many people living with HIV/ AIDS struggle to find employment due to societal misconceptions.
Studies show that 45 to 65 per cent of individuals with HIV are unemployed, and over half of those who are employed do not disclose their status due to fear of workplace discrimination. This bleeds into an additional issue: Economic insecurity among aging populations.
"We are seeing a growing number of seniors living with HIV/AIDS who are unprepared financially for old age,” explained Kevin Leal, Acting Executive Director and Director of Operations. “At the same time, new HIV cases continue to rise. Coupled with Toronto’s affordable housing crisis and rising cost of living, the number of people in need continues to grow.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
For many, Fife House has been a turning point.
"Fife House helped me find housing when I was facing homelessness,” said Hai, a Fife House client. “Their team stepped in and efficiently helped me manage my health, finances, and got me into transitional housing. When all
seemed lost, they were a ray of light. Since then, my life has improved, and I currently have my own place. I am contributing to my community and am thankful for all the support. I wouldn’t be at this point in my life without them. The little things we do for each other in the community matter."
You can be part of the solution by becoming a Fife House Builder —a monthly donor committed to helping provide safe housing, healthcare, food security, and support services to those in need.
“It is easy to pass judgment on those living with HIV/AIDS and experiencing homelessness without understanding the circumstances that led them there,” said Leal. “We are all in this together. Investments in supportive housing and services, as well as HIV care and prevention, help people rebuild their lives."
Make a difference today by visiting fifehouse.org/donate and setting up your monthly gift. Every contribution matters.
Art is one of the most powerful forces in the world. Aside from being a tool for self-expression, it’s also a driver for social change and a canvas for sharing stories. In the same way, fashion is more
than fabric; it’s a medium for storytelling. And with the right execution, it becomes clear that fashion is not just an industry— it’s a movement.
Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week (VIFW) and SWAIA Native Fashion Week (SNFW) are bringing that execution to life through a groundbreaking partnership that is putting Indigenous designs centre-stage.
This collaboration is about more than showcasing designs— it’s about honouring ancestral knowledge, mentoring emerging talent, and creating a global stage for Indigenous fashion. By merging their platforms, VIFW and SNFW are giving Indigenous designers an opportunity to redefine narratives and establish new industry standards, challenging stereotypes at the same time.
“Partnering with VIFW amplifies our mission to bring Native art to the world through impactful partnerships while strengthening the global visibility of Native fashion design,” said
SWAIA Executive Director Jamie Schulze. “This partnership reflects a shared commitment to promoting Native voices and fostering creative excellence.”
Since its inception in 2017, VIFW has led Native fashion, becoming the first Indigenous Fashion Week globally—and it all stems from the brain of Joleen Mitton. After a successful international modelling career working with Kenzo, Clinique, and Vivienne Westwood, Joleen felt a deep calling to reconnect with her Cree heritage and uplift Indigenous talent in an industry that often overlooked them.
In 2017, she founded VIFW, the world’s first Indigenous Fashion Week, pioneering a space where Indigenous designers could showcase their art on their own terms. Her impact extends beyond fashion runways. She co-founded Supernaturals Modeling, the first Indigenous modelling agency, and launched mentorship programs that empower Indigenous youth
to break barriers and thrive in creative industries.
Now, VIFW has showcased over 40 visionary designers, gathering an audience of fashion lovers and creating a name for itself as an international platform for Native fashion.
The 2025 SWAIA Native Fashion Week will take place from May 7 to 11 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the location is an important part of what makes this event so powerful. Since its 2024 debut, SWAIA Native Fashion Week has set out to establish Santa Fe as the Indigenous fashion capital of the U.S., offering an unparalleled platform for Native designers to connect, innovate, and inspire.
SWAIA’s mission of bringing Native arts to the world by inspiring artistic excellence, fostering education, and creating meaningful partnerships aligns seamlessly with VIFW’s vision. During fashion week, the entire city becomes a celebration of Native artistry, from the historic Santa Fe Plaza
to contemporary art galleries and Indigenous-owned boutiques.
So, what’s in store during this week of artistry? An extraordinary showcase of more than 30 visionary Indigenous designers, each bringing their latest collections to life through runway shows, interactive art installations, and cultural performances.
The main events will showcase Indigenous fashion, art, drumming, dance, singing, and more through four themed nights. These nights will feature captivating fashion shows, vibrant pop-up shops, cultural showcases, interactive art installations, and empowering educational workshops.
“We are excited to collaborate with SWAIA Fashion Week as it extends our mission to empower and inspire Native fashion communities,” said a representative of VIFW. “This partnership will allow us to learn from and share with the Santa Fe fashion community while strengthening connections across borders.”

Gender should never define a person’s opportunities—but in many industries and communities, it still does. The Gender Equality Coalition of Ontario (GECO) is working to change this, with a mission to break down barriers and create truly inclusive communities.
Founded in 2019, GECO ensures that all individuals, regardless of gender identity, have equal access to opportunities. The organization champions intersectional gender justice, advocating for policies and initiatives that support people of all cultures, ages, races, orientations, locations, and abilities.
DRIVING CHANGE FOR AN EQUITABLE FUTURE
More than just inspiring conversations, GECO is about inspiring true action. Through advocacy, policy reform, and community engagement, the coalition is building a future where gender does not determine success—and it all starts with three major projects that are creating lasting impacts across Ontario.
CHEERS FOR CHANGE: ADVANCING
EQUITY IN THE TRADES
The skilled trades industry remains
one of the most gender-segregated professions, and Cheers for Change is tackling this issue head-on. This initiative mobilizes workers, unions, and industry allies to create fair workplaces where women and gender-diverse individuals can thrive.
The program’s second phase, Cheers and Change Hit the Road, is expanding efforts to strengthen gender-equitable contract language, amplify voices advocating for change, and ensure that industry events include gender equity as a key focus.
Want to get involved?
• Create a video showing what equity looks like in your workplace.
• Host an event that highlights gender inclusion in the trades.
• Invite GECO to speak at meetings, panels, and conferences.
• Share inspiring stories and pictures of women breaking barriers in the trades.
• Change doesn’t happen in silence—it happens through action. Together, we can redefine what the skilled trades look like.
RAINBOW CONNECTIONS: SAFE
SPACES FOR 2SLGBTQIA+ YOUTH
Every young person deserves a supportive community, but many 2SLGBTQIA+ youth face discrimination and isolation. GECO, in collaboration with the Rainbow Optimists, is working to secure funding from United Way to create programming that fosters connections and peer relationships among 2SLGBTQIA+ youth in Southwestern Ontario.
THE CONNECTHER CONFERENCE
The ConnectHER Conference is an annual conference that unites tradeswomen, industry leaders, union representatives, policymakers, and gender equity advocates to celebrate achievements and challenge industry norms. At this year’s conference, GECO is introducing the ConnectHER Anti-Sexist Toolkit and Bargaining Guide—a resource that offers actionable strategies for union leaders and employers to promote gender-inclusive workplaces. There are countless reasons to attend, from the opportunity to gain insights from industry leaders and advocates, learning strategies to address workplace inequities,
and connecting with like-minded professionals committed to gender equity. But perhaps most importantly, it’s a chance to be part of a movement that is actively dismantling barriers.
BE PART OF THE MOVEMENT
Change doesn’t happen by chance—it happens because people demand it. The Gender Equality Coalition of Ontario (GECO) is leading the charge, but real transformation happens when we all
take part. Whether you’re a tradesperson, a community leader, or someone who believes in fairness, you can be part of this movement.
• Invite GECO to speak at your workplace or industry event.
• Support Cheers for Change by sharing stories and advocating for workplace equity.
• Promote Rainbow Connections and help secure resources for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth.
• Attend the ConnectHER Conference and be part of the change.

Muslim Children’s Aid and Support Services (MCASS) was born out of necessity more than 20 years ago, at a time when Islamophobia was on the rise, leaving many feeling isolated and powerless.
Determined to change this reality, MCASS was founded to advocate for families, provide essential services, create welcoming spaces for children and parents alike, and foster community building. Today, its mission is more critical than ever.
MCASS works with some of the most marginalized families— newcomers and refugees from all across the globe including Syria, Afghanistan, Sudan, and now Gaza—who face challenges like housing insecurity, financial hardship, food insecurity, social and systemic barriers, and mental health struggles to provide culturally integrated, trauma-informed programs.
ALI’S STORY: MORE THAN A SOCCER GAME
Ali was just 10 years old when he arrived in Canada as a Syrian refugee. He had already lived through war and survived a refugee camp, but in his new school, he faced another battle—bullying, racism,
and the feeling of not belonging. Ali recalled precious memories and brighter days back home when he played his favourite sport, soccer, with his childhood friend Ahmed. In the hope of reliving those happy times, Ali took his soccer ball to school.
Inspired by Ali’s story, MCASS launched Scarborough Simbas in 2020 with a small grant from the Rotary Club of Toronto. Community support and funding from Canadian Tire Jumpstart, MLSE, and the North Toronto Soccer Club has facilitated the expansion of the program year after year. In its sixth straight year, this summer, Simbas Rising for Better Tomorrows will welcome 160 children, including those recently arriving from Gaza. It’s a safe space where kids can just be kids—free from fear and discrimination. Each
session includes soccer drills and scrimmages, life skills training in resilience, inclusion, and teamwork, and after play, kids and families share a meal, fostering lasting friendships.
SARAH’S STORY: HEALTHY HEARTS, HEALTHY MINDS
When Sarah, a mother of two, first joined the Healthy Hearts, Healthy Minds culinary training program, she was at her breaking point. Her family had escaped war. They arrived in Canada with nothing but the trauma of what they left behind. With no job, no local support, and no confidence in her English skills, Sarah felt trapped in her tiny apartment, barely able to afford food for her children. Then, she found MCASS.
In the Healthy Hearts, Healthy Minds program, Sarah joined a
group of refugee and newcomer women learning food handling and business skills. Led by MasterChef Canada finalist Reem Ahmed, the program provided hands-on training in traditional cooking methods, food safety, and entrepreneurship. The women in the class supported each other, sharing their stories, their struggles, and their dreams. They gained independence, earning food-handling certificates and launching home catering businesses, and they found joy in laughing, cooking, and eating together, rediscovering their identities beyond just “survivors.” Now, Sarah no longer feels powerless. She has a skillset, a support network, and a future.
BRINGING RAMADAN BLESSINGS TO FAMILIES IN NEED
Food insecurity is one of the
biggest struggles facing MCASS families. During Ramadan—a sacred time for Muslims worldwide, marked by fasting, reflection, and increased devotion to Allah—the burden becomes even heavier. That's why MCASS organizes a series of initiatives each year, including the delivery of food hampers and Iftar meals and hosting community Iftars in partnership with Humaniti, National Zakat Foundation, Muslim Hands and Penny Appeal, ensuring families can break their fast with dignity. MCASS is community and volunteer-driven. It does not receive operational funding from any level of government. Every program depends on support from people who believe in building a more inclusive and compassionate world. Whether by donating to help fund critical programs, volunteering to bring them to life, or simply sharing stories like these to spread awareness, you play a key role in transforming lives, one family at a time, and in building stronger and safer communities.

Forward-thinking donors are multiplying their impact on causes they care about by leveraging a movement that is transforming wealth management for the better: donor-advised funds.
We used to call it philanthropy’s best-kept secret, but the potential for a growing number of givers to make a deeper and more sustained impact in the world is too important to keep under wraps. People who want to see their financial giving do the most good choose donor-advised funds to get easy access to the benefits of having a foundation without the legal hassle or administration.
The concept is simple. Generous people set up a donor-advised fund within a foundation. They get a single tax receipt at the time of donation. Easy! Then, the donor accesses a user-friendly platform to recommend to the foundation exactly when and how much of their assets to donate to the charities of their choice. Gone are the days of typing in credit card numbers and stacking up charitable receipts.
But simplifying admin is only one of many perks. These funds are game-changers for generous families, businesses, and individuals with a mission to use what they have to impact individuals, communities, churches, world missions, education, poverty and relief, and other significant charitable works to the fullest. Some donors want a quick way to offset capital gains or other tax liabilities without rushing to distribute the funds all at once. Others take advantage of a foundation’s expertise, putting illiquid assets to use. Business owners often appreciate that they can access all their giving info in one place, easily managing requests and accessing giving history. On top of that, some foundations like the Canadian National Christian Foundation (CNCF) allow custom names, multiple donors, and designated managers, making them a personalized solution.
CNCF is an innovative donor-advised foundation dedicated to connecting charitable
giving with meaningful impact. Donors join a movement of Christian individuals with a passion for uplifting charitable organizations in Canada and around the world.
When donors entrust CNCF with their funds, they can be confident that their investment will be maximized to make a real difference. Unlike other donor-advised foundations that cap the percentage that can be gifted each year, givers with CNCF can choose to give up to 100 per cent of their funds at any time.
Donors can use their charitable capital to fund international projects through a partnership between CNCF and TrustBridge Global Network—an organization that prioritizes effectiveness and integrity while sending $2 billion a year to 70,000 charities in over 85 countries.
If you want to wield the wealth God has given you to propel the work of God forward, the Canadian National Christian Foundation could be your next power move.
In today’s rapidly evolving job market, lifelong learning is no longer optional—it’s essential. Professionals across industries are navigating economic shifts, technological advancements, and changing employer expectations, making continuous skill development the key to staying competitive. At the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies (SCS), flexible programs and micro-credentials empower learners to adapt, grow, and break barriers in a world where change is the only constant.
WHY UPSKILLING
MATTERS NOW MORE THAN EVER
The workforce is transforming. Automation and Artificial Intelligence are redefining roles, new industries are emerging, and traditional career paths are evolving. According to the World Economic Forum, by 2027, six out of 10 workers will need reskilling due to environmental, technological, and economic changes.
Upskilling—learning new, relevant skills to stay competitive— helps professionals navigate these changes. Continuous learning ensures adaptability, whether it’s a career pivot, advancement in a current role, or the need to stay ahead of industry trends.
The good news? Lifelong Learning doesn’t have to mean going back to school full-time. With SCS’s range of micro-credentials, professional certificates, and parttime courses, learners can acquire job-ready skills in weeks or months, not years.
THE ROLE OF MICRO-CREDENTIALS: LEARNING THAT FITS YOUR LIFE
Micro-credentials have emerged as powerful tools for professional growth, offering targeted, high-impact learning opportunities. Unlike traditional degrees, micro-credentials focus on specialized skills that can be immediately applied in the workplace. At SCS, micro-credentials are designed to meet real-world workforce demands in collaboration with industry leaders.
One of the biggest barriers to upskilling is time. Professionals juggling careers, families, and personal commitments need flexible learning options. SCS meets this need by offering:
• Online and Hybrid Learning: Study from anywhere with interactive virtual courses.
• Short-Term Commitments: Many courses can be completed in a few weeks.
• Practical, Career-Focused Training: Learn skills that can be immediately applied to your job.
With these flexible formats, learners don’t have to put their careers on hold to build new expertise.
REAL-WORLD SUCCESS: HOW SCS PROGRAMS DRIVE CAREER AND PERSONAL GROWTH NAVIGATING CAREER TRANSITIONS
Megan had her eye on a new career pathway when she registered for the first course in the School of Continuing Studies’ Digital Strategy and Communications Management certificate. She wanted to enhance her expertise in digital communications beyond her personal and volunteer experience, with hopes of transitioning into a communications role.
With the full support of her manager, who recognized the benefits of upskilling, Megan pursued
the certificate. Her studies soon paid off, and she successfully transitioned from her role as a research administrative assistant to that of a communications and knowledge translation officer.
She found that the knowledge gained from her coursework gave her the confidence and preparation needed to excel in her new role, often revisiting course materials to support her work.
One of her most valuable takeaways from the program was the realization that effective storytelling doesn’t have to be perfect. As part of her coursework, she launched her first podcast, focused on communicating health and social issues in an engaging and empowering way. The experience pushed her to explore new communication mediums and apply strategic approaches to content creation.
For Megan, the biggest challenge was finding time to complete coursework, but assignments tailored to learners’ interests made the experience enjoyable. She believes the certificate is valuable for emerging communications professionals and anyone looking to stay on top of digital communications trends.
BUILDING CONFIDENCE AND COMMUNITY THROUGH CREATIVE WRITING
Elizabeth joined an SCS creative writing class to refine her storytelling skills and find a community of
writers. Her introductory course in science fiction and fantasy writing deepened her understanding of story structure and led her to form a tight-knit writing group with classmates. Over the years, their feedback and support even helped her shape and complete her debut novel.
The structured feedback she received through SCS gave her the tools to approach writing more professionally. She credits the class for giving her the confidence to publish and encouraging aspiring writers to find a community to share their work.
For Elizabeth, taking that first step into lifelong learning at SCS was pivotal in achieving her writing goals.
BREAKING BARRIERS TO CAREER AND PERSONAL FULFILMENT
Daniel was always passionate about online business and e-commerce, which made the SCS E-commerce and Online Business Management certificate a natural fit. While working as a Merchant Success Manager, he saw the program as an opportunity to deepen his knowledge of the latest industry trends and analytics.
Starting his studies early in the pandemic, Daniel found the online learning format convenient and engaging. It allowed him to immediately apply new concepts to his work. The course’s case studies
and discussions provided insights into data-driven decision-making, enhancing his ability to support his organization’s merchants.
Daniel says that the ability to learn online also meant that it was easier for him and his classmates to access the course. Whether they were dealing with health issues, full schedules, or a lengthy commute, learners were still able to participate and receive the full benefit of the course.
He advises others considering SCS programs to approach their studies with clear career goals, recognizing that education is a powerful tool for professional growth and confidence building.

Expecting a baby is one of life's most monumental journeys. The choices you make during this time—from your healthcare provider to your birth plan—shape not only your experience but also your transition into parenthood.
Midwives are primary healthcare providers who specialize in prenatal, birth, and postnatal care. They work with you and your family to ensure you receive the care you deserve, respecting your individual needs and including you in all decision-making. Midwifery care is fully covered by provincial and territorial health insurance in Canada, making it accessible to those who choose it. Depending on your preference, midwives can attend births in hospitals, birthing centres, or at home.
“When looking at midwife vs doctor care, we decided that as long as we had a healthy pregnancy, we wanted the more hands-on approach that midwives offer; longer appointments,
easier access to our caregiver,” said one expectant mother. Midwives work in partnership with expectant parents, ensuring they feel supported and empowered throughout their journey. They provide comprehensive prenatal visits, routine blood work, diagnostic tests, and postnatal care to help parents and babies thrive in the crucial early weeks. Because midwives work in pairs or small teams, there is always a familiar provider available on call, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
PREGNANCY YOUR WAY
Midwives take the time to foster a relationship built on trust and respect, ensuring that expectant parents are informed decision-makers in their own care. Their care does not end at birth—they continue to see parents and newborns for at least six weeks postpartum, addressing physical, emotional, and psychological needs during the crucial early days of parenthood.
Midwifery is informed by research, clinical experience, and evidence-based guidelines to bring about the best possible outcomes for both parent and baby. Inclusion is a vital part of this process, so midwifery ensures respect for cultural traditions and individual values and inclusive care for all families, including Indigenous and racialized communities.
Indigenous midwifery, for one, views birth as a deeply sacred event, and this practice plays a key role in building healthy and safe Indigenous communities. The National Council of Indigenous Midwives (NCIM) advocates for the restoration of midwifery education and the provision of midwifery services within Indigenous communities, consistent with the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Midwives in Canada play a critical role in providing culturally safe and equitable care to
diverse and racialized communities, ensuring that expectant parents receive respectful, individualized support through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. They often work within community-based models that prioritize language accessibility, traditional birthing practices, and trauma-informed care that work to address systemic barriers that marginalized groups may face in the healthcare system.
“Midwifery worked for us because we felt totally comfortable with our decision,” an expectant mother shared. “My advice to expectant parents considering midwifery would be to talk to anyone and everyone you can and make the best choice for you and your family. But I wouldn’t have done it any other way!”

AND FIONA THOMPSON, INSTITUTE FOR QUANTUM COMPUTING, UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO
Over the past century, quantum science has dramatically reshaped our understanding of light and matter. Exploring quantum science has explained how atoms stick together, predicted when they won’t, and made us question what words like “wave” and “particle” really mean. The United Nations proclaimed 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology to celebrate the impact of quantum science, but it’s easy to get the impression that quantum isn’t part of our day-to-day life. In reality, many of the tools of the modern age are only possible thanks to quantum
mechanics, and scientists around the world are building new technologies that help us see what’s really going on at the quantum scale.
The global positioning system, or GPS, is a tool that has transformed how we navigate—and it relies on quantum mechanics. To find our location, GPS measures how long it takes to send a signal to a collection of satellites in space. The accuracy of the measurement depends on how well we can measure this time difference. It needs to be more accurate than a millionth of a second to place someone within a few metres of their actual position! This precision is possible thanks to atomic clocks, which use the quantum
fact that elements only emit light waves at very specific frequencies, which our eyes interpret as very specific colours. These frequencies are remarkably consistent; by setting our clock to this frequency, we can create timing devices that stay synchronized to within one second over millions of years, as explained in A Brief History of Timekeeping by Chad Orzel. Atomic clocks were first developed in the 1950s and, by the 1960s, formed the internationally agreed-upon method for defining what “one second” really is.
The specific frequencies of light emitted by atoms are not just useful for clocks. Scientists use this quantum fact to identify what elements are in a sample, a technique called spectroscopy. We can also use this feature to control atoms using another familiar quantum technology: the laser. Today, people use lasers in manufacturing, health care, digital media, and more, but the concept of a laser wouldn’t exist without the insights of quantum science. Lasers control how energy is shifted between atoms and light, ultimately creating a bright beam by amplifying light waves moving in the same direction. Scientists and engineers today use carefully-aligned lasers to trap atoms one at a time. With these atoms, we can build quantum computers, which process information in new and different ways thanks to the unique rules of quantum science. We can also use these atoms to build sensors that detect the force of gravity with enough precision to measure objects buried deep underground,
according to an article by Physics World Atomic clocks and lasers are just a couple of the many technologies that only exist because of quantum science. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) diagnostic techniques work thanks to our understanding of the magnetic properties of atoms, which we can only predict using quantum science. The tools we use to fabricate the integrated circuits that make up today’s computers and phones are only possible to use thanks to advances in quantum science. Quantum mechanics is all around us today, and researchers who study chemistry, physics, math, engineering, and more are thinking about what the quantum tools of the future will look like.
EXPLORING QUANTUM AT HOME AND IN THE CLASSROOM Quantum science doesn’t need to stay in the lab! There are budget-friendly ways to explore quantum behaviour yourself. Using polarizing filters, like those in your sunglasses, you can explore how information is encoded in light–just like how it is used in some quantum computers. With a laser pointer and a strand of hair, you can see the interference patterns that first showed us that light behaves like a wave. A diffraction grating can break light into its many colours, revealing unique patterns for different elements. We’re proud to partner with Let’s Talk Science to provide these experiments to classrooms to celebrate the quantum in 2025.

The skilled trades industry is at a turning point. With a significant labour shortage and growing demand for skilled workers, now is the time to invest in the future of the skilled trades in Ontario. Support Ontario Youth (SOY) is leading the charge in bridging this gap by providing apprentices, employers, and industry stakeholders with the tools, training, and resources necessary to build a strong workforce. Through innovative programs, hands-on learning experiences, and meaningful mentorship, SOY is helping to mould the future of skilled trades and modernize the apprenticeship pathway by supporting all sides of the equation.
“The need for skilled workers is more urgent than ever, with 100,000 tradespeople required over the next decade. That’s why we do what we do. Over our history, we have registered over 1,000 apprentices, partnered with more than 370 employers, awarded over 100 scholarships, and hosted over 4,000 attendees at Boot Camp, and these numbers are always growing,” explains Melanie Winter,
Executive Director of Support Ontario Youth.
SOY’s approach is based on not only supporting all sides but also strengthening connections within the industry. This year, they hosted their first-ever Trades & Talent Summit, an event that brought together 200 jobseekers, dozens of employers, and industry partners. This summit served as a platform for collaboration, discussion, and networking, reinforcing the need
for strong partnerships to support the skilled trades sector.
A successful career in the trades requires more than just technical knowledge; it demands proper training, mentorship, and a clear understanding of the apprenticeship pathway. SOY’s Trades Readiness Program is designed to equip individuals with the skills
they need to excel in the construction, industrial, and motive power sectors. This program offers safety training, live webinars, personalized mentorship, workplace success skills, employability coaching, and customized support, ensuring that participants are fully prepared for their careers.
One of SOY’s most impactful initiatives is Tools in the Trades Boot Camp, one-day events that provide a unique hands-on learning experience. “It doesn’t matter if you are new to the trades or are just looking to expand your industry knowledge, our Boot Camps have something for everyone,” explains Winter.
“They are a great way to try a trade, so to speak, with a day of free training, networking with industry professionals, and direct connections to potential employers. By providing real-world exposure, we’re helping potential tradespeople gain valuable insights and practical skills to enable them to take their first step towards an apprenticeship.”
“We know that financial challenges can often be a barrier to completing an apprenticeship, so we work alongside partner
organizations to offer scholarships like our SOY Education Scholarship and the BOLT Women in Construction Grant,” shares Winter. “It’s all about easing the financial burden so we can help more individuals pursue and complete their training in the skilled trades.”
As a registered charity, Support Ontario Youth is committed to addressing training gaps, providing mentorship, and advocating for apprentices and employers across Ontario. The future of the skilled trades depends on strong initiatives that support the next generation of workers, and SOY is proud to play a key role in workforce development by equipping apprentices and employers with the tools and support they need to succeed.
With the ongoing labour shortage, programs like Support Ontario Youth have never been more essential. Learn more at supportontarioyouth.ca

When it comes to schools, bigger isn’t always better. Smaller schools mean smaller class sizes, closer-knit connections with students, and more focus on meeting students’ individual needs—all areas where Trafalgar Castle School thrives.
Trafalgar Castle School is small by design. Each of the 225-plus students in Grades 4-12 is personally known by their teachers and staff, which creates a close-knit community that makes students feel supported and cultivates a strong sense of belonging and a circle of care. Class sizes range from six to 23 students, with most classes at approximately 15, a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio. If a student misses a school day, they know they’ll be missed.
Beyond connecting with one’s peers in their grade, an established House System ensures students in Grades 4-12 are cross-pollinated into one of four Houses. These Houses collaborate and participate in school spirit activities and challenges throughout the year.
Learning is not a one-sizefits-all approach. That’s why Trafalgar tailors learning to meet students where they are. It’s an
added benefit of small class sizes—they enable empathetic and supportive teachers to know what interests the students and work to integrate these interests into the learning environment. This promotes deeper engage ment and growth and allows students to participate more actively. The result? When stu dents participate more, they make meaning of the learning, resulting in more significant learning gains.
SMALL SCHOOL, BIG IMPACT
As a small school, Trafalgar can meet its students’ individual needs with extensive learning
Advisors Program, a faculty-led and student-centric program developed to create a safe space for expressing emotions and fostering social and emotional development, and the Captains and Poets program, which brings students in Grades 9-12 together for purpose-built activities that promote community-building and self-care.
These programs are essential to Trafalgar’s mission to prepare students for success. Traf Steps, a unique locally developed course at the school, is designed to equip middle school students with the emotional intelligence, conflict resolution skills, and learning skills needed to navigate the tween and early teen years and prepare them for senior school and beyond.
And these programs bring big results. One hundred per cent of
89 per cent of Trafalgar graduates earning scholarships to university and special programs.
For example, Senior student Rihanat received a full Black Excellence Scholarship and was accepted into Shad Canada, a prestigious month-long STEAM and entrepreneurship program for Grades 10 and 11. Another Senior student, Sayde, earned a full scholarship to the LEAP 2024 Female Leadership Programme in the UK, one of the world’s premier leadership and entrepreneurial programs, and was invited to deliver a TED Talk.
In addition, Trafalgar’s students embrace opportunities to join clubs, teams, and ensembles, excelling in initiatives like the Ethics Bowl, MATE Robotics, and Castle Choirs. Students volunteer locally and globally, raising awareness
Community-driven and inclusive, swimming is a lifelong passion and a pathway to excellence. Swim Ontario, the provincial governing body operating under the national organization Swimming Canada, understands the potential of competitive swimming and is committed to fostering both high-performance and lifelong participation in the sport, with a vision of becoming a world leader in swimming excellence.
A BLUEPRINT FOR SUCCESS
Swim Ontario’s long-term strategy focuses on creating an environment where swimmers can excel at every stage of their journey.
Developing and supporting competitive swimmers through a Long-Term Athlete Development Strategy, Swim Ontario nurtures well-rounded athletes who can excel across multiple events and competition levels. With over 130 affiliated clubs, Swim Ontario fosters a collaborative environment among athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers. These clubs are the backbone of Ontario’s swimming community,
providing structured training programs for Grassroots Development, Age Group, Para, and Masters swimmers.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR EVERY SWIMMER
Swim Ontario supports swimmers across all categories, offering tailored programs to suit different needs:
• Grassroots & Age Group swimming – The foundation of competitive swimming, supporting athletes from local meets to international competitions.
• Para Swimming – Fully integrated training and competitions for athletes with disabilities, fostering inclusivity at all levels.
• Masters Swimming – Programs for adults seeking structured training, fitness, and competitive opportunities. Regardless of experience or ability, Swim Ontario ensures that every swimmer can access training, coaching, and competitions that help them thrive.
A THRIVING COMPETITIVE SCENE
Ontario is the proud home of a dynamic competitive swimming
environment, with Swim Ontario sanctioning and organizing competitions year-round. From regional meets to provincial championships, these events allow athletes to test their skills, build resilience, and achieve personal bests, such as setting time standards for different age groups and events and ensuring fair and competitive participation.
However, programs like these require support for further innovation and progress. Ontario’s demand for 50-metre swimming pools is growing. These Olympic-sized pools are crucial for high-performance training, aquatic sports, and community programs. However, many existing facilities are aging, and access to quality training venues is increasingly limited. These pools support elite training and competitive swimming development, increase participation in aquatic sports and recreational programs, enhance water safety and youth engagement, and generate economic benefits through tourism and event hosting. These critical factors all contribute to elevating Ontario’s competitive swimming
landscape to promote the healthful and inclusive community engagement that swimming is known for.
“Fifty-metre pools serve as hubs for competitive aquatic sports and community programs,” explained Swim Ontario CEO Dean Boles. “Investing in these facilities is essential for the health and success of our athletes and the broader community.”
To address Ontario’s aquatic infrastructure challenges, the ASC recently called for dedicated provincial funding to help municipalities and sports organizations
develop modern aquatic facilities. “Ontario does not have enough pools to support its growing population,” said Anne Bell, Chair of the Aquatic Sport Council of Ontario (ASC). “Our recommendations aim to provide equitable access to swimming facilities, ensuring future generations can thrive.”
With a strong strategic vision, inclusive programs, and a growing advocacy movement for better aquatic infrastructure, Swim Ontario is paving the way for the future of competitive swimming in the province. Whether by nurturing young athletes, expanding opportunities for all swimmers, or pushing for investment in new pools, the organization remains steadfast in its commitment to excellence.
For swimmers, coaches, and enthusiasts looking to get involved, Swim Ontario provides a world of opportunities. To learn more about programs, events, and how to start your swimming journey, visit SwimOntario.com
As the war in Ukraine enters its fourth year, Zirkova Vodka has faced unimaginable challenges: the shutdown of all manufacturing at the outset of the war, border blockades, multiple relocations of vodka and materials production, and periods of total stock depletion, which meant that it was often difficult to find in Canada.
A brand deeply rooted in Ukrainian heritage and craftsmanship, it’s no surprise that resilience is the driving force
behind its survival. Facing obstacles, adversity, challenges, breakdowns, and breakthroughs, based on a mission and vision that is bigger than business, is the true market of commitment, passion, and courage—the heart of what Zirkova Unity represents.
Zirkova’s journey began long before the war. When Zirkova co-founder and CEO Katherine Vellinga moved to Ukraine in 1997, she had no idea that it would lead to discovering the
origins of vodka itself—the “X” on the map where vodka first began. Through meticulous research and a deep appreciation for history, she followed the trail of manuscripts, industry experts, and storied traditions to the birthplace of vodka.
“Our research showed that over 600 years ago, the first vodkas were made in a part of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth that today lies in the heart of Ukraine,” Vellinga shared. “We pondered, ‘if this is what true vodka and vodka culture is, then how come it looks nothing like what we are being marketed to as consumers in Canada?’”
This discovery set Vellinga on a path to bring authentic Ukrainian vodka to Canadians—and thus, Zirkova Vodka was born.
However, the brand faced a crossroads when the war disrupted its ability to produce in Ukraine. With supply chains severed and no product left to sell, Zirkova could have ceased to exist. Instead, the company
pivoted, forging a new path forward in Canada, creating Zirkova Unity—a vodka made entirely on Canadian soil but infused with the heart and soul of Ukraine. Made with their Ukrainian roots in mind, Zirkova Unity joined the brand's collection of vodka's along with Zirkova One and Zirkova Together, which are both made in Ukraine.
UNITY IN EVERY DROP
Zirkova Unity is a reflection of the two cultures coming together: the best ingredients and expertise that both Canada and Ukraine have to offer. It uses the wheat grown on the vast Canadian Prairies, cultivated by generations of both Ukrainian and Canadian farmers, and water sourced from deep within the Canadian Shield. One thing remains unchanged: the vodka-making techniques are true to Ukrainian heritage, still carrying the essence of its ancestral homeland. Vodka is an art and a science in Ukraine, so everything must be done to the
highest of standards in a way that honours Ukrainian vodka-making traditions, bringing them to Zirkova’s second home in Canada.
NOW IS THE TIME FOR UNITY
“We have incredible partners—they care about helping a Ukrainian-Canadian business, producing to the highest quality standards and being part of a special project like this one, to find a Canadian home for Zirkova, while maintaining our Ukrainian heritage,” explained Vellinga. “Zirkova Unity is on a mission, a Canadian ‘supercharged’ with the bravery and courage of Ukrainians—with both Canadian and Ukrainian blood coursing through our veins. We are grateful to the people of Canada, who have supported our brand and showed up for us during the most difficult time in our ancestral homeland and our companies’ history. This is what UNITY is all about.”
Starting over is never easy, and doing so in a new country comes with its own set of unique challenges. From navigating the immigration processes to securing housing, finding employment, and integrating into the community, refugee claimants and newcomers arriving in Canada are faced with a long journey to stability. But with the help of Stepstone House in Ottawa, the journey is made easier. Stepstone House is a lifeline in times of need, offering transitional shelter and vital support services to those seeking refuge. Residents stay for a period of three to six months, receiving comprehensive assistance to help them navigate new life in Canada. Established in 2019, housing 24 residents across two houses, Stepstone House has significantly expanded to provide shelter to over 120 residents in 10 houses spread across Ottawa, from Kanata to Orleans and from downtown Ottawa to South Keys.
But Stepstone House is much more than a shelter; their impact goes further than a place to lay your head.
The goal of Stepstone House is to empower refugee claimants to stand on their own, contribute to society, and create a new life full of opportunities. Each resident is given the tools they need to transition into independent living, from shelter to social support, to settlement services. Stepstone House works closely with government agencies, community organizations and donors to make sure that no one is left behind. Their process includes guiding refugee claimants through Canada’s complex immigration system, including access to social services, legal aid, biometrics,
immigration medicals, assisting with applications for subsidized housing to secure long-term accommodation, and supporting with job searches and connections to employment services.
Outside of the building blocks to a new life in Canada, Stepstone House also provides resources to mental health therapy, counselling and wellness. Their programming also includes volunteer opportunities and cultural networking events to help refugee claimants feel at home. Community is the driving force behind the organization’s success. For one, having a community to rely on makes the transition to a
new country that much easier, and begins the cycle of giving back as early as possible. For another, it’s a way for individuals, companies and community organizations to show their support to newcomers, proving that Ottawa is a welcoming city for refugees. Organizations like Khalsa Aid and IKEA donate essential items like bedding and linens, hygiene products, and warm clothing. The City of Ottawa Homelessness Branch has also been a dedicated partner, providing resources to support the growing number of refugee claimants in the city. Faith communities like the Life Centre Church and St. Stephen’s
Anglican Church have been steady sources of support. Even members of the community get involved in fundraising events, like the 7vs7 Flag Football Fundraiser organized by Franco-Cité Catholic High School students.
INVESTING IN CANADA’S FUTURE
Refugee claimants aren’t just looking for safety—they’re looking for a chance to contribute, build, and belong. "Asylum seekers are instrumental to economic growth," said Rev. Joseph Kiirya, Founder and Executive Director of Stepstone House. "They address labour shortages, become taxpayers, and their presence fosters innovation and growth." There are countless ways to get involved and help support our growing community. Donations of all kinds, from financial contributions to help provide housing, food, and essential services, to necessities like bedding, toiletries, food, and household items go a long way in making all the difference to families in need.

When you serve on your condominium board, you’re making important decisions that impact your entire community. It’s a difficult position to be in, but the way to make it easier is simple—a partnership with a trusted and experienced property management company.
Beyond that, you want a homegrown management partner. One that understands the nuances of your condominium corporation and the neighbourhood it’s located in, and that, yes, neighbourhood is correctly spelled with a ‘u.’ A partner that understands what it means to be Canadian.
When you choose to work with FirstService Residential, you get just that.
Our roots are deeply Canadian, as we are owned and operated by FirstService Corporation, a proudly Canadian-founded company. FirstService Corporation was started right here in Ontario in 1989. It’s headquartered on Bay Street in Toronto and, over the course of the last 36 years, has grown into a trusted leader in property services.
Each of our condominium managers is supported by a regional director, vice presidents, president, and an administrative and accounting team that
all work out of our local Mississauga or Toronto office. These professionals provide strategic guidance and handle the administrative needs of our condominium managers. Additionally, many of our associates are actively involved in the condominium industry, attending important industry events and holding positions on association boards, including CCI Toronto. This allows us to deepen our understanding of what is taking place in the industry, see emerging trends, and help our boards with community improvements that will help maintain property values and remain a top choice when people are looking for a desirable place to call home.
Legislation changes that will impact a condominium corporation can happen in the blink of an eye. When you work with us, you can rest assured you’re partnered with a management company that keeps on top of all legislative changes. When this happens, we are quick to act with clear communication to our boards that outline the changes and what they mean for the community. We then assist our boards in navigating those changes so they can reach a place of compliance with ease.
For a condominium corporation to truly thrive, it needs a strong, knowledgeable board at the helm. One that feels empowered to make decisions with confidence. We believe to best accomplish this, it goes beyond the standard guidance a management company provides and includes on-going education for board members.
That’s why we host regular educational webinars on topics that vary from budget planning and navigating inflation, to insurance market trends, or planning for the introduction of EV charging into your community. These educational opportunities not only allow us and other industry experts to share our depth of knowledge, but they add additional tools to the tool belts
of our boards, setting them up for success.
GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
Being genuinely helpful is part of what it means to be Canadian.
As a country, we are always ready to support each other in times of need in any way that we can. As part of our social purpose initiative, we put tremendous effort into supporting local charities and causes that give back to our shared community.
The Canadian Cancer Society, the Good Shepherd Homeless Shelter, and Salvation Army, are just a snapshot of the charities our associates came together to support through various fundraisers and events in the last year.
WELCOME TO LIFE, SIMPLIFIED
“We take great pride in the fact
that we are the trusted management partner to more than 900 condominium properties throughout the GTA,” said Mark D. Hopkins, President of FirstService Residential Ontario.
“And what I believe sets us apart is our deep understanding of the many unique neighbourhoods found throughout, because we don’t just serve them, we live in them too. In times of uncertainty, your home should be a place of comfort and refuge, so leave the day-to-day operation of your condominium to us, so you can relax and enjoy all that your condominium community and surrounding neighbourhood has to offer.”
Don’t be surprised if you see a familiar FirstService Residential face at your community ice rink, park, or farmer’s market, or dining at a local hot spot. Because we are your neighbours.
The Black Loyalist Heritage Centre is one of Canada’s best-kept secrets, but it’s hardly hidden away. On the western shores of Shelburne Harbour, Nova Scotia, in the picturesque Birchtown Bay—the third largest natural harbour in the world—this historical treasure is filled with stories about the courageous Black Loyalists who sought freedom and a new beginning in the late 18th century.
In the 1780s, thousands of Black Loyalists—formerly enslaved individuals who sided with the British during the American Revolution—made the bold decision to leave the United States in pursuit of freedom. Many settled in Birchtown, making it the largest free Black settlement of its time. Today, visitors can retrace their steps at the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre.
WHAT TO EXPECT
DURING YOUR VISIT

Named after the protagonist of The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill, this heritage trail offers a moving experience. A highlight is the Pit House Replica, which gives visitors a glimpse into the temporary shelters that Black Loyalists lived in upon arriving in Nova Scotia in 1783. These pit houses were built with fire pits dug in the centre of the dwelling and a roof fashioned with logs and moss. One of the centre’s biggest attractions, the Pit House is currently undergoing renovations in preparation for summer visitors.
ST. PAUL’S ANGLICAN CHURCH

The Caribbean’s Leeward Islands chain holds not one but two islands ripe with white (and pink!) sands, resplendent nature, and laid-back luxury. The sibling islands of Antigua and Barbuda have long lured travellers with their dynamic tourism offerings. Antigua—the larger of the two— boasts picturesque coastal resorts, storied colonial towns, and some of the best sailing in the world. Barbuda is the poster child of unspoiled tropical nature, with teeming reefs and verdant mangroves aplenty. Antigua and Barbuda is known for its famously hospitable and welcoming populace, though in recent years, a decidedly different group of island denizens have found themselves in the spotlight.
Enter the Magnificent Frigatebird, a fitting name for the strikingly-coloured national bird of Antigua and Barbuda. These aren’t the kind of birds you might spy flitting about in your backyard: these awesome avians have a wingspan of up to 1.8 metres and live for up to 45 years. Though they are almost always sighted close to the
A Caribbean Community Unites to Protect Their Feathered Friends
water, frigatebirds aren’t aquatic, as they lack the oil glands necessary to dive. Instead, these “Robber Birds” or “Man’o’wars,” as local folklore sometimes names them, chase and steal the prey of other endemic seabirds in thrilling aerial showdowns. The red-throated male Frigatebirds are natural performers, partial to one particularly dazzling trick. Inflating the sac on their throat to massive, balloon-like proportions, the males ready themselves for the fierce competition to attract a female. Their spirited, dramatic mating displays have quickly
become a can’t-miss theatre for locals and visitors. Clicking, trilling, drumming, and dancing, the male Frigatebirds conduct the Broadway spectacle of a lifetime. From the middle of summer through to the next spring, the mangroves of Codrington Lagoon National Park (where thousands of Frigatebirds live) come alive with the sounds of this natural symphony.
The privilege of hosting one of the world’s largest and most thriving colonies of Frigatebirds comes with the responsibility to protect it. The government of Antigua and
Barbuda takes this commitment very seriously. As global demand for eco-tourism experiences continues to increase, the importance of sustainable tourism practices and robust conservation programs also grows. Strict legal protections alone have failed in other regions of the Caribbean, where vulnerable land-based nests have been endangered by overtourism. The secret to Antigua and Barbuda’s conservation success? The local community.
Codrington Lagoon National Park is managed by a community council that has drawn upon
generations of appreciation and reverence for the birds to unite the people of Barbuda and protect them. Boundaries in the park are meticulously maintained and patrolled by community members and wardens. Access to the nesting ground is gated through registered local guides, most of whom have decades of experience. While visitors can still get up close and personal with the birds, the knowledgeable and passionate guides ensure the ecosystem is undisturbed and the nests remain untrampled by careless footfalls. Having grown up with these birds and living amongst them daily, these guides have become de facto conservation ambassadors and eco-tourism leaders in the country, ensuring the Frigatebirds have a bright (and noisy) future in Barbuda.

MARVELOUS MINERALS
In 2001, one in eight Canadians was 65 or older. By 2026, one in five Canadians will have reached age 65. And by 2041, 9.2 million, or one in four of us, will have hit that golden age. Healthy aging is the key to optimizing the years we have without disease or other chronic conditions that may keep us from enjoying life to the fullest.
Eating a variety of nutritious foods for a low-fat, high-fibre diet, rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, is one promising strategy for lowering our risk of disease and disease-related disabilities. Also, it
keeps our brains and bodies in tip-top shape as the years pass.
Remember that healthy aging also requires daily physical activity and activities that exercise the brain. In general, energy and calorie needs do get lower with aging because we have less muscle and more body fat, and many of us tend to be less active. Remember that we still need about the same essential nutrients to stay healthy, including carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. And don’t forget the fluids. Here’s how mushrooms can be a tasty part of your anti-aging diet strategy.
FRESH MUSHROOMS CAN HELP! ADDING ANTIOXIDANTS
• Fresh mushrooms contain significant levels of l-ergothioneine, a naturally occurring antioxidant that may also help protect the body against disease. Ergothioneine is found in both raw and cooked mushrooms.
FABULOUS FIBRE
• Fresh mushrooms contain both soluble and insoluble fibre. Insoluble fibre promotes regularity. Soluble fibre may help regulate blood sugar fluctuations and lower cholesterol levels.
• Beta-glucans, a type of soluble fibre found in Maitake mushrooms (hen-of-thewoods), destroyed human prostatic cancer cells in a laboratory setting. They also have potential antiinflammatory activity, which may help protect the body against disease.
• Fresh mushrooms are naturally very low in sodium. They are a great way to boost flavour without adding a lot of salt to pasta, salads, stir-fries, and more. A diet low in sodium can help prevent and control high blood pressure.
• A ½ cup serving of uncooked white button mushrooms is an excellent source of selenium. Researchers in the Netherlands found that men who ate the most selenium had a 31 per cent lower risk of developing prostate cancer.
WINNING WITH WEIGHT
• Fresh mushrooms are perfect for low-fat diets. They have a high water content, are low in fat, and contain some fibre, which helps keep you feeling full.
• Being at a healthy weight is an important factor in helping to prevent or delay many chronic diseases and disabilities. These include diabetes, heart disease,

high blood pressure, certain cancers, gout and general wear and tear on joints.
• Being at a healthy weight also makes it easier to be more active.
MUSHROOMS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
• Use ½ cup sliced crimini mushrooms instead of 4 oz. of sausage in pasta sauce or on pizza. Benefit: save 158 calories, 9 g fat, 4 g of saturated fat, 642 mg sodium.
• Add 1 cup sliced white button mushrooms to egg dishes instead of ½ cup shredded cheddar. This will save you 213 calories, 18 g fat, 12 g saturated fat, and 353 mg sodium.
• Layer ½ cup of sliced grilled portabella mushrooms onto sandwiches instead of 3 oz. of salami. This will save you 336 calories, 30 g fat, 11 g saturated fat, and 1582 mg sodium.

Start the day strong with this savoury whole-grain breakfast bowl with sliced portabella mushrooms and a curry yogurt tahini topping. We’ve used barley, but feel free to swap it with your favourite grain, such as quinoa or wild rice.
Ingredients
YOGURT TOPPING
• 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
• 2 garlic cloves, minced
• 1 cup chopped kale
• 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
• 1 tablespoon tahini
• 1 teaspoon curry powder
• 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
BREAKFAST BOWLS
• 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
• 2 portabella mushroom caps, cleaned and thinly sliced
• 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
• 2 heads baby bok choy, sliced
• 1 cup pearled barley, cooked
Directions
1 To make the topping, heat the olive oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the kale and cook for two more minutes, until wilted. Let cool to room temperature.
2 Spoon the yogurt into a small food processor or cup of a single-serving blender. Add the tahini, curry powder, and salt. Add the kale and garlic. Pulse in 10-second intervals until the kale is finely chopped and all the ingredients are combined. Set aside.
3 Start on the breakfast bowls by the sliced mushrooms and toss to cook in the oil for 5 minutes, until they become tender. Toss with the salt. Transfer the mushrooms to a bowl and add the bok choy to the hot skillet. Cook on medium heat for 1 minute, until it begins to wilt. Remove from heat.
4 Assemble the breakfast by adding an equal amount of barley to each of the four bowls. Top with greens, sliced mushrooms, and red bell pepper. Add a large dollop of the topping and place an egg in each bowl. Serve right away.
ONE GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP AT A TIME
There’s an intrinsic link between purchases you feel good about and brands you can trust—especially when you consider the impact of your purchase on the world around you. With mounting environmental concerns, many of us have altered our everyday lives to make more sustainable choices, from small changes to large shifts, and we want the brands we buy from to do the same. Even better, we want our purchases to do the work for us, making a positive impact on our communities as we sleep—literally.
For over three decades, Sleep Country has been Canada’s leading brand for one of your most important purchases: your mattress. Over time, our mattresses can wear out, sag, and cause discomfort. On average, mattresses should be replaced every six to eight years; your sleep needs can change in that time!
For that reason, a mattress is an impactful purchase, and at Sleep Country, the impact goes beyond a good night’s sleep.
In its mission to combat climate change, Sleep Country introduced the Green Glove Delivery program, which not only focuses on responsible mattress recycling but also extends to proactive tree-planting initiatives.
The Green Glove service is Sleep Country’s premium delivery service, where delivery teams fully assemble and set up
new mattresses and beds for customers. Sleep Country also takes back customers’ previously used mattresses, bed frames, and box springs, and removes all packaging materials, recycling them responsibly back at its distribution centres.
Over the last 20 years, Sleep Country has diverted over 2.9 million mattresses from landfills. That's about the height of 1,600 CN Towers!
For every Green Glove Delivery, Sleep Country plants trees, further enhancing its commitment to sustainability and working towards its ambitious goal of planting over 150,000 trees annually in partnership with Veritree. That would take up the space of about 530 ice hockey rinks!
Teaming up with Veritree, a climate tech enterprise, Sleep Country planted 168,000 trees
Sleep Country believes in the importance of quality sleep, which drives its commitment to ensuring everyone has access to a comfortable bed. With rising costs, furniture poverty has become a common reality for low-income families.
Furniture is one of the most expensive items people on low incomes are likely to purchase. Without a bed, children sleep on piles of clothes on the floor. Without a table, families eat their meals on boxes and crates.
Founded in 1998, Furniture Bank shares Sleep Country's vision of ending furniture poverty in Canada. By redistributing gently used furniture and

housewares to families and individuals in need, Furniture Bank provides essential support to vulnerable communities.
Furniture poverty is often invisible, but it can have harmful physical, emotional, and financial consequences.
Sleep Country is dedicated to ensuring that vulnerable members of our communities can harness the power of a good night’s sleep, and that starts with a mattress.
In Canada, it's estimated that close to six million mattresses go to landfills every year. In 2024, Sleep Country worked to donate over 31,000 mattresses and recycled over 130,000. By partnering with
Furniture Bank, they hope to increase this number further, diverting mattresses from landfills and facilitating donations and recycling to ensure their mattresses serve a greater purpose even after use.
By raising awareness and collaborating with partners like Furniture Bank, Sleep Country ensures that individuals and families facing furniture poverty can access essential household items, promoting physical, emotional, and financial wellbeing within communities.
With Sleep Country, you can rest easy knowing that your decision is making a positive difference in the world.
in 2024 in Canadian regions ravaged by wildfires, particularly in British Columbia's Cariboo region. Operating within the Tsilhqot’in First Nation, Sleep Country has enlisted the help of local Indigenous tree planters through Veritree, demonstrating a deep respect for the land and its inhabitants. This initiative not only contributes to reforestation efforts but also aids in carbon sequestration, significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The impact of 150,000 matured trees is significant: they'll be able to sequester an average of about 137,700 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide, which is comparable to removing nearly 35,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles off the road for one year. Already, a good night’s sleep is paying off tenfold.
