EXAM PREPARATION *All GV Centres are Official IELTS test centres. GV Hawaii offers an IELTS Option program.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Established over 25 years ago, IELTS is the world s proven English language test. IELTS continues to set the standard for English language testing, and is accepted as evidence of English language proficiency by over 9,000 organisations worldwide. Last year, more than 2.2 million tests were taken globally. IELTS is recognised as a secure, valid and reliable indicator of true-to-life ability to communicate in English for education, immigration and professional accreditation.

CAMBRIDGE The University of Cambridge has been providing language assessment since 1913. Each year 2 million people from over 140 countries write Cambridge ESOL examinations for personal development and academic or business certification. These international examinations have been designed for non-native English speakers of all nationalities and all ages and are recognized globally as one of the best measures of English proficiency. • Entrance Exam Required

• full time exam preparation program in Canadian GV schools (25 lessons per week); option course at GV Hawaii (5 lessons per week)

• FCE,CAE and CPE preparation and examination available up to 4 times per year, depending on location

• focuses on the main components of Academic English as used in university-style courses

• Focuses on 5 main skills covered in the examination: reading, writing, use of English (grammar), listening, and speaking

• test practice components build familiarity with the format of the test and provide students with the opportunity to practice a range of test-taking strategies • best choice for students seeking international education, professional recognition, benchmarking to international standards, and global mobility • official IELTS exam held multiple times per month in each GV school (monthly in Hawaii)

• Weekly practice tests • Full mock exam at end of session • Official examinations are held in the week after the program is completed on dates set by the University of Cambridge • Exam results and certificates provided by the University of Cambridge

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication)

The TOEFL® test is among the most widely respected English-language tests in the world, recognized by more than 9,000 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries. Wherever you want to study, the TOEFL test can help you get there.

The TOEIC examination assesses English language competency in a business context and is used by companies around the world to determine English communication skills.

• full time exam preparation program available at GV Vancouver (25 lessons per week); full or part time preparation program available at GV Hawaii (20 or 25 lessons per week) • focuses on improving all four language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) • strong choice for students preparing for university entrance

PAGE 8

*All GV Centres are Official Cambridge test centres.

¦

The TOEIC preparation course is offered as a full time or part time program in Hawaii, and is offered as option classes in Calgary. Students learn the strategies needed to write the TOEIC exam; they prepare for the main components of the TOEIC exam by covering listening comprehension, reading, business-oriented vocabulary review, and grammar review.

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PREP (EAP) PATHWAYS & PARTNERSHIPS

SAMPLE UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS

Preparing for university demands a high level of academic English. This involves developing a strong command of academic reading, note taking and lecture skills, and of course, academic writing and research skills. The best way to demonstrate a high level of academic English is to measure these skills against an internationally recognized assessment exam. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is known as the world s language proficiency test because it is so widely used by institutions of higher learning in Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and around the world.

• Accounting

The GV EAP program (Canada only) helps students prepare the skills they need for entering university. Each school has a wide variety of specially designed elective classes which focus on study skills, notetaking, presentation, academic writing and research. Students who successfully complete this program will be ready to succeed at university. GV has pathway and partnership agreements with quality post-secondary institutions in Canada and the USA. Students can receive counselling and assistance with university and college applications.

I ve had an amazing experience at GV Calgary. I studied General English last year and now I came back for IELTS classes. GV has helped me a lot in learning a second language and now I have interesting opportunities. The teachers are the best. They are so friendly and their strategies allow me to learn easily while sharing experiences with my classmates and friends from different countries. Additionally, Calgary is a beautiful place and the surroundings are wonderful. Thank you GV!

GVH is friendly and has a homey atmosphere. Every teacher has a passion for teaching English and it is easy to understand their classes. I made a lot of friends from many foreign cultures. My host family is very kind and always thinking about me and offers to help me. The school is the best location with easy access to Waikiki and Ala Moana. There is a lot of support from the teachers, staff and students to help with any situation. If you come to GVH you can have an amazing experience. ‒ Kumiko, Japan
