China has been an important destination for travelers and businesspeople for centuries, and Beijing, located in the northern part of the country and home to more than 20 million, is a vital economic, cultural and historic center. With new plans in place to further the city’s economic stability and increase environmental efforts, the people of Beijing look forward to the future with a befitting amount of positivity. The perfect destination for history buffs, business leaders and travel gurus, one can easily lose one’s self in the abundance of all Beijing offers.
GETTING THERE Beijing Capital International Airport is located 16 miles northeast of the city center. All metered taxis cost about $2 for the first two miles and about 50 cents each additional mile. Airport shuttle buses run routes to major destinations and cost around $5. The metro’s Airport Express Line to Dongzhimen Station stops at Terminals 2 and 3 and travels to the city center in less than 20 minutes for about $4 a ticket.
GETTING AROUND Taxis are a popular method of getting around, though service is often slow due to the congested conditions of street-level traffic. The Beijing Subway provides an efficient alternative, with eight lines plus the Airport Express Line running throughout the city with announcements in both Chinese and English. Oneway tickets with unlimited transfers cost about 35 cents.
9-5 China Grill at Park Hyatt While the name might not impress you, the view certainly will. Situated on the top floor of the Park Hyatt Beijing in the Central Business District, China Grill offers a complete 360-degree view of the surrounding cityscape. The restaurant is open all day, and reservations can be made for a business lunch either on its website or by calling. Offering a nice-sized wine list and a variety of menu options, China Grill serves lunch 11:30 a.m. through 2:30 p.m.
The CUT The CUT is a casual yet chic steakhouse located inside the Fairmont Beijing. Having received several awards, this restaurant offers a variety of carnivorous lunch options, including a desirable Wagyu beef selection. Lunch is served until 2 p.m., after which the restaurant closes until opening at 6 p.m. for dinner. Make reservations via email or phone.
EAST, Beijing If you’re looking for a business hotel with all the perks and amenities that make working on the go easier, give EAST, Beijing a try. Perks include a social business center called Domain, designed for individuals to work and mingle simultaneously, 8 | GLOBAL CITY GUIDEBOOK | 2015
and The Workshop, which offers meeting rooms for up to 120 guests plus attached open kitchens with chefs at your service. A business lounge called Upstairs provides iPads for guests’ use. With complimentary WiFi throughout the hotel’s many venues, you’ll always stay connected.
AFTER 5 Jingshan Park When you need some fresh air and beautiful scenery to clear your mind after a long day, head to Jingshan Park. Located in downtown Beijing, Jingshan Park was an imperial garden as early as the fifth century. A site rich with history, the park offers what is considered one of the best views of Beijing and the Forbidden City. The park closes at 10 p.m. June through August and at 8 p.m. the rest of the year.
Badaling Great Wall The Great Wall of China is possibly Beijing’s most popular tourist attraction and a must-see if you’re a first-time visitor in the city. The most visited section of the Great Wall, Badaling lies within close proximity for most people staying in Beijing and is accessible via public transportation. The site is open until 6:30 p.m., so you can easily make it after the workday ends.
Capital Spirits This award-winning bar received lots of press attention since its opening in mid-2014. While serving a wide array of options, the mixologists focus on baijiu, a Chinese distilled spirit, as well as craft Chinese beers and obscure spirits from around the world. The bar’s environment is simple and historic, with restored and antique décor, attracting a mix of locals and travelers looking for their first taste of baijiu.

SOUTH KOREA
Seoul

The capital of South Korea and a city of more than 10 million, Seoul rushes toward the future with an abundance of opportunities for both business and tourism. With a focus on new technology, unique culture and a taste for luxury, Seoul proves a perfect destination for the globetrotter looking for an unforgettable experience or the businessperson wanting to delve into the city’s booming industries of technology and finance. GETTING THERE Incheon International Airport is located approximately 35 miles outside of the city center. To get downtown, visitors can travel via airport buses, taxis or the Airport Railroad. Airport buses operate every 10–30 minutes between 5:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. Limo buses (about $14.70 one way) stop at major attractions and hotels and provide a good option for travelers with luggage. Standard taxi service from the airport to downtown runs about $40 for regular service and $70 for deluxe service. The Airport Railroad departs every 30 minutes; a one-way ticket to Seoul Station costs about $8. GETTING AROUND The well-connected Seoul Metro runs throughout the city and its suburbs. Pick up a stored-value T-money Card at most subway stations, convenience stores and newspaper kiosks if you plan on using the subway often. The card itself costs around $3. It can also be used for taxi fares, buses and some convenience stores. The city has four kinds of public buses: yellow (tourist areas), green (travels around neighborhoods and connects with the subway), blue (across town), and red and green (intercity). One-way fares cost about $1. Standard taxis (orange or silver) start from $2.35 and go up 10 cents for each eighth of a mile. Black deluxe taxis are more expensive, starting at $4.41 and increasing 20 cents for each tenth of a mile. 9–5 Dongdaemun Design Plaza If it’s meeting space you’re after, Dongdaemun Design Plaza, opened in 2014, is worth looking into. Host of the 2020 Summer Olympics, the mega metropolis of Tokyo is home to more than 13 million people. In addition to hosting a plethora of modern skyscrapers, museums and art galleries, the capital of Japan is a culinary cornucopia, boasting a diverse range of Michelin-starred restaurants fit for any foodie’s palate. Explore its ancient heritage at centuries-old palaces and shrines before diving into its teeming urban life in celebrated shopping areas and abundant nightlife venues.
GETTING THERE Two major international airports service Tokyo. Narita International Airport, nearly 40 miles outside the city, can entail a burdensome — and expensive — airport transfer. Taxis typically cost $125–200, plus expressway tolls. About once an hour, nine-seat omnibus taxis depart the airport at a cost of $29–41; purchase tickets before departing the airport. Three bus services are also available. Haneda Airport, formerly mainly a domestic airport, now handles several international flights. Monorail service to the city center takes around 15 minutes for about a $4 fare; the Keikyu Airport Line, at 21 minutes, costs $5.
GETTING AROUND

Taxis in Tokyo are expensive (about $6 for the first 1.25 miles, 80 cents for each 100 feet or 40 seconds wait time thereafter). Luckily, public transportation channels, while challenging to navigate, are clean, modern and efficient. Tokyo Metro operates nine underground lines, and Toei runs four, at about $1.50 for the shortest ride. The subways operate 5 a.m.–midnight, every three to five minutes. A one-day unlimited pass on the JR Train — its most popular being the Yamanote Line with 30 stops — can be purchased for about $13.
Enjoy the mesmerizing, never-ending skyline of the world’s largest megalopolis with a well-mixed cocktail in your hand at the open-air Rooftop Bar of Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills. Crowning the hotel on the 52nd floor, the bar provides the right ambience for each guest’s personal choice, offering a tea lounge area with an intimate feel as well as a high-ceilinged bar and open-air terrace with a more cosmopolitan vibe.

Rich in both history and culture, Athens, the capital city of Greece, is a beautiful destination that will have you planning your return trip before you’ve even left. From the mountains on the mainland to the scattering of islands in the Mediterranean Sea, the home to ancient philosophy offers many business opportunities, with a heavy emphasis on tourism.
GETTING THERE Athens International Airport serves the city, located 20 miles southeast of central Athens. A taxi ride to the city center costs about $39 during the day (5 a.m.–12 a.m.) and $55 at night (12 a.m.–5 a.m.). Buses, the metro and trains provide alternative modes of transfer from the airport. A one-way ticket for the bus, leaving every 30 to 60 minutes, costs about $5.60. The one-way fare for the metro from the airport costs approximately $8.90. Travel via the railway costs between $6.70 and $15.60.
GETTING AROUND Athens features an extensive public transportation network of buses, trams, metro, railway and trolleybuses. For about $1.30, you can use any mode of transport for 70 minutes. Tickets valid for 24 hours are also available for approximately $4.50, and five-day tickets cost about $11. A three-day tourist ticket including one roundtrip to the airport runs about $22. When using public transportation, be sure to validate your tickets after purchasing them and before boarding. The fine for a non-validated ticket is 60 times its value. Validation machines are orange boxes on the buses and trolleybuses. On the metro, find boxes in the station lobby; and on the tram, beige boxes are situated on the platform and inside the car. Taxis also offer an inexpensive way to travel around the city, with a base fare of about $1.60.
9–5 Balcony at Cyclades If your business luncheon or dinner will include a group of more than just a few, the Balcony at Cyclades offers special packages for business dining which include access to audio and video equipment for presentations, among other perks. Serving cuisine inspired by the Aegean Islands alongside breathtaking views, the Balcony at Cyclades is ready to impress.
Poseidon Athens Hotel The Poseidon Athens Hotel prides itself on its traditional Greek breakfast, serving a dizzying array of more than 80 homemade dishes with locally sourced ingredients to businesspeople and luxury travelers alike. The oldest distillery in the city, you don’t want to miss a taste of the ouzo, a wildly popular Grecian alcoholic beverage tasting of licorice and anise.

With so much to offer, Mexico City should be on every traveler’s bucket list. Featuring multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites, dozens of museums, a vibrant culinary scene and beautiful green spaces, Mexico City has been an up-and-coming destination for the past several years. The city of more than 9 million continuously finds new ways to attract both leisure and business travelers. GETTING THERE Benito Juárez International Airport is located approximately eight miles from the city center. For taxi service, head to an authorized taxi booth marked “Taxi” before exiting the airport. Only accept service from staff members wearing bright yellow jackets or bibs labeled “Taxi Autorizado.” Boletos (tickets) range in price depending on the size of the car and the zone to which you travel. GETTING AROUND Opt to take public transportation rather than attempt to drive in this hectic, densely populated city. Good options include the Metro, the city’s subway system (about 39 cents a ticket); RTP bus system (approximately $2, no matter the destination); electric trolley buses (about 31 cents per trip); and ECOBICI, a bike-sharing service offering more than 6,000 bikes at 444 stations throughout the city (users register with the program and pay around $26 for unlimited 45-minute journeys within a year; tourists can purchase a seven-day card for about $20). 9-5 Camino Real Polanco México If you’re looking for a hotel with meeting space that also offers a convenient location and lush accommodations, look no further than the Camino Real Polanco México. Located only a 30-minute drive from the airport, this 5-star hotel includes meeting space for groups of 10 to more than 4,000. Hotel Habita At the Hotel Habita’s Lobby Restaurant, Executive Chef Fernando Maya turns out a simple yet delicious menu for your power breakfasts. The food is what one would expect from an upscale but casual Mexican eatery — eggs rancheros, cecina and enfrijoladas — and the atmosphere is just as simple and chic. Reforma 500 Located at the Four Seasons Hotel Mexico, D.F., Reforma 500 is a popular spot for business luncheons or dinners. Lunch through the week is served from noon until 6 p.m., and dinner is offered 6 p.m. through 11 p.m. Give their

AFTER 5 Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso The Historic Center of Mexico City offers many museums you can find open until 5 p.m., but if you’re looking for something as an option after the workday ends, head to the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, an architectural attraction and museum from the early 18th century, built by the Jesuits and later used as a school and military post throughout history. The museum holds important cultural and artistic exhibitions and stays open until 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday. Jules Basement This new reservations-only cocktail bar, with its white-and-black décor and tabletops propped atop giant skulls, is not your average place to grab drinks after dinner, but you’ll be glad you did. With weekly jazz performances and cocktail sessions themed after fan favorites like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire, your evening will definitely be an experience to write home about.

Moscow

One of the major hubs of politics, economics, culture and science in Eastern Europe, Moscow thrives as a city abuzz with past, present and future. Russia’s capital and most populous city offers historic sights, nightlife, dining and premium accommodations to travelers seeking to discover the magic of Moscow.
GETTING THERE First thing to do when planning a trip to Moscow is to secure a visa before traveling. Russia’s national carrier is Aeroflot; most international flights arrive at Sheremetyevo International Airport, about 19 miles from the city center. The Aeroexpress train runs hourly; the 40-minute journey costs about $5. Reserve taxi service in advance and be sure to use a reputable service. Pink Taxi operates exclusively for female travelers with female drivers. For flights into Domodedovo Moscow Airport, train service to Paveletsky Station takes around 40 minutes for about $4.
GETTING AROUND Easily navigable, the highly efficient Moscow Metro offers most signs now in both English and Russian. Trains depart about every 90 seconds, and the Circle Line services the city center. One trip costs around 50 cents; two-, five- and 10-trip tickets are available. Trams and trolley service also run throughout the city; tickets purchased in advance cost around 40 cents and from the driver, about 50 cents.
9–5 Café Pushkin Opened in 1999 in a Baroque mansion, Café Pushkin is a Moscow icon. Start your day with the ultimate power breakfast, ranging from decadent — caviar and Champagne — to porridges, eggs and more. Open day and night, the restaurant also offers live music, free WiFi and a nonsmoking area.
Gusyatnikoff Restaurant For doing business over classic Russian cuisine, consider Gusyatnikoff, offering billiards, smoking rooms, VIP rooms and private meeting spaces in addition to the second-floor dining. The décor and architecture are something special, including restored original parquet flooring from the 19th century.
Mario One of Moscow’s most expensive restaurants, Mario’s Italian food will go a long way to impress important clients. Ingredients arrive from Italy weekly, ensuring

JAMA MASJID AND RED FORT
Delhi
PHOTO: © ANTONELLA865 | DREAMSTIME.COM
A hub of business, culture and creativity, Delhi, the most populous city in the world until overtaken by Tokyo in 2014, is home to more than 24 million. A center for both business and leisure travel, Delhi attracts visitors with an extensive historic cityscape dotted with mosques, forts and monuments left over from the Mughal rulers who once occupied the city. The British built New Delhi as the imperial capital of India, while Old Delhi functioned as the capital of Islamic India. Beyond its historic beauty lies a host of eclectic pleasures waiting to be discovered.
GETTING THERE Indira Gandhi International Airport, India’s busiest airport, serves Delhi, located approximately 10 miles from city center. The Delhi Metro provides the fastest commute from the airport to city center; the 20-minute ride costs about $2.50. To catch a cab, step outside your terminal and use the newly introduced post-paid radio taxi service. The airport has a relationship with three taxi operators — Meru Cabs, Mega Cabs and Easy Cabs — that provide air-conditioned cabs with GPS technology and digital meters integrated with the GPS to ensure every fare is tracked. Find Meru Cabs and Mega Cabs outside Terminal 3 and Easy Cabs outside Terminal 1C.
GETTING AROUND Public transportation is extensive in Delhi, where more than half the population commutes on the metro trains, local trains, buses and taxis. The Delhi Metro is modern, user-friendly and clean with a large route network throughout the city. Fares range about 15–50 cents. A Tourist Card offers unlimited use for approximately $1.70 for one day or $4.20 for three days, with an 85-cent refundable deposit. Yellow and black taxis, available across the city, cost about 45 cents for the first 0.62 mile and 25 cents for each subsequent 0.62 mile (without air-conditioning) or 30 cents (with air-conditioning). Visitors can also travel via auto-rickshaws, about 42 cents for the first 1.24 miles and 15 cents for each additional 0.62 mile.
9–5 1911 In December 1911, New Delhi was declared the capital of India. At The Imperial, 1911 offers all-day dining spread over three areas overlooking the grounds and decorated in the grandeur of the Art Deco period. Talk business over breakfast here, beginning at 6 a.m. daily.
Set’z
Veda
Open for lunch and dinner, Set’z offers a viable option to host clients over either meal. Serving a combination of Chinese, Japanese, Mediterranean and Thai, lunch is available from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., dinner from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. Its relaxing ambience is highlighted by a rooftop, bar service and a stellar Sunday brunch.
Touted as a “dining experience,” Veda’s cuisine is an interpretation of classic Indian cooking with a modern twist. The décor is simple yet refined, harking back to a forgotten era — as subtle and elegant as the cuisine itself. Locations in Mumbai and Kolkata join two New Delhi restaurants.

When you think of paradise, Tahiti likely springs to mind. Dubbed the “Queen of the Pacific,” Tahiti is the largest of the 118 islands and atolls that comprise the Islands of Tahiti. Deep valleys and waterfalls characterize its interior landscape, while the coastal lands bloom with tropical flowers and the hustle and bustle of the locals. Tahiti’s capital city of Papeete, meaning water basket, offers travelers world-class resorts, spas, fine dining and shopping.
GETTING THERE -
International flights arrive at Tahiti-Fa’a’a International Airport; Air Tahiti Nui offers non-stop service from the United States. Before arrival, travelers should arrange airport transportation through hotels or tour companies. During the day, bus service is available. At night, the best option for transport to/from the airport is taxi, which will cost around $20–40, depending on the time and distance. Rental cars are also available.
GETTING AROUND Around Tahiti, travel like a local on the public bus system. Modern buses replaced most of the island’s famous le trucks, but some do remain. One-way trips cost about $1.75, or $2.50 at night. To travel from one end of the line to the other is approximately $10. Taxis can be flagged on the street or found at designated stations. Fares are set by the government and posted at the Centre Vaima station. Few taxis have meters, so agree on a fare before the journey begins. Renting a car and driving is also a popular option.
9–5 Les 3 Brasseurs Polynesia’s only microbrewery, Les 3 Brasseurs opened in Papeete in 1998. For a lunch or dinner meeting, visit not only for the beer but also for traditional Ch’tis, Flemish and Alsatian cuisines. Alfresco dining is available on the patio, and live music is offered on select evenings.
Le Lotus Located under a thatched roof overlooking the lagoon waters of InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa, Le Lotus is one of the island’s most acclaimed restaurants. Known to Spanish conquistadors as the “City of Kings,” modern-day Lima, the capital of and gateway to Peru, incorporates an interesting blend of architecture, history, heritage and passion. Rising above the coastline, Lima tells a story of civilizations in its 43 districts, 9 million residents, its museums, nightlife and more. Feel the heartbeat of the city in its cuisine — no visit is complete without ceviche or a Pisco sour. Find what suits your tastes on your next trip to Lima.
GETTING THERE International flights arrive at Jorge Chávez International Airport, about 10 miles from the city center. Find a taxi inside the security area of the international arrivals area and expect a ride into the city to cost around $15. The Urbanito Airport Shuttle delivers travelers to their hotel for around $8, departing the airport every 30 minutes. A note for departure: Travelers must pay an exit tax of approximately $31 before leaving the country.
GETTING AROUND Navigating Lima can be tricky, especially for firsttime visitors. Taxis are not government-regulated, meaning fares must be negotiated in advance. Avoid hailing a taxi on the street if you are not comfortable conversing about the fares in Spanish. Hotels can call reputable companies — including Taxi Amigo — for guests; fares in the downtown area run $8–15. The metro runs daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and departs every 15 to 20 minutes. Micros and combi buses cost approximately $1 per trip, with fares increasing after midnight and on holidays. Within the various neighborhoods, Lima is walkable.
9–5 Café de la Paz The European/Peruvian fusion bistro Café de la Paz on Boulevard Tarata offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. For a quick, local start to your day, sit outside and sample from the menu options or a selection of sweets and coffee. The reasonably priced Miraflores outlet does not disappoint.

Located in Miraflores, the restaurant proves a great choice for important lunch or dinner business meetings. Brazil’s second-largest city likely conjures images of sun, fun and the legendary Carnival. Known in the country as the “Marvelous City,” beyond the initial glitz and glamour lies a welcoming city of history, landscape, architecture and culture — as well as 23 beaches beckoning visitors to sit back, relax and enjoy. Rio de Janeiro is gearing up to perform on the world’s stage as the host city for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
GETTING THERE International flights arrive at Aeroporto Internacional Tom Jobim, or Galeão, located about 40–45 minutes from the city center. Make sure to arrange and pay taxi fare in advance. Depending on the destination, the taxi ride can range from $15–30. Real buses, parked curbside outside the arrivals hall, run 60-minute trips to Zona Sul for about $5 from 5:30 a.m. to 11:45 p.m.
GETTING AROUND Rio de Janeiro’s metro system is reliable, navigable, clean and safe. However, depending on where you want to travel, it may not be as comprehensive as other methods of transportation. Plan routes in advance. The metro runs from 5 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sundays and holidays. One-way fares are around $1.05. Flag yellow taxis from the street. There are two types of metered fares: before 8 p.m. and after 8 p.m. Radio taxis and companies serving hotels may be more reliable but also have higher fares. Urban buses cost less than $1 per trip; combis run the length of the beachfronts for about 85 cents.
